Residents of Nelson and users of the Great Northern Rail Trail will notice some unconventional activity in the forest just above the city this summer.

The forested mountainside above the rail trail and south of the cemetery, some of it visible from the city, will be selectively logged by Kalesnikoff Lumber Ltd. Close on the loggers’ heels, crews contracted by the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) will be doing wildfire mitigation work in the logged areas: thinning and limbing and cleaning up or burning the excess logging residue to reduce the risk of wildfire.

Forests surrounding Nelson have been identified many times by experts as dangerously prone to wildfire. Most of that forest is Crown land licensed to timber companies.

Kalesnikoff has divided the logging plan into four cutblocks (see map) and the company’s Gerald Cordeiro says they intend to start with block two this spring, followed by blocks four, three, and one throughout the year.

Blocks one and two will involve closing the rail trail, for safety reasons, Cordeiro says. Some of the work will be done with cable logging because of the steep terrain.

done, they will be doing three things: thinning the crown canopy so there is a patchwork of trees rather than a continuous fuel available to a fire; limbing trees to get rid of ladder fuels that allow a ground fire to climb trees; and cleaning up or burning surface debris to prevent dangerous accumulation on the ground.

The latter technique might involve some prescribed burning, which will mean smoke visible from the city.

Also, some material left on the ground might be removed and taken to a pulp mill to partially pay for the project, according to the RDCK’s Hamilton.

Otherwise the cost of the wildfire mitigation work will come from a grant from the Forest Enhancement Society of B.C., a group set up to administer provincial government wildfire mitigation funds.

Hamilton says this level of collaboration between a timber company and local government on Crown land is unique in the province and he sees it as a template for future work elsewhere.

Ken Byrne of FP Innovations, a non-profit research institute working with the RDCK and the province on the project, agrees. “What is very new is finding a space that is mutually beneficial for both the forest company, the community, the ecosystem and the forest.”

First-time grad rate holds steady in School District 8

The pandemic doesn’t appear to have prevented Grade 12 students from tossing their caps in School District 8.

Annual statistics released by the education ministry show 78 per cent of students who began Grade 12 in September 2019 graduated last year in SD8. That average has not changed for the last three years.

Superintendent Christine Perkins said the steady grad rate is a credit to staff and students during a difficult academic year.

“I’m super proud of our entire district, and all of our teachers and our CUPE staff especially because really, there’s been a ton of pressure on them to make sure we’re all safe, and I think we’ve done it and we’re doing it,” she said. “We’ve been supporting our families and kids as best we can during that time.”

Of the district’s 392 Grade 12 students, 304 graduated last year.

Smaller cohorts are also represented in the report.

Of the 24 students listed as English language learners, 90 per cent graduated within six years of Grade 8. Sixty-one per cent of special needs students out of a total cohort of 56 graduated, dropping from 73 per cent the previous year.

Organizer of COVID-19 rally fined by Nelson police

The Nelson Police Department fined a Winlaw woman $2,300 on Feb. 6 after she organized a rally in contravention of the COVID-19 Emergency Program Act. The rally took place in front of Nelson City Hall, including on the Ward Street sidewalk, with about 75 people carrying signs and listening to speakers discussing COVID-19 guidelines and laws. Thereafter, about 45 of the participants

marched on Baker Street, according to a police news release.

Police said the event was peaceful.

Fines under the COVID-19 Measures Act and can run between $230 and $2,300.

“The public are being asked to ensure compliance of the British Columbia Public Health Order,” the news release states, “specifically the COVID-19 Related Measures Act, and individuals who fail to comply could face fines.”

Kamloops investigation leads to firearms seizure near Vallican

An arrest in Kamloops late last year has led to a recent seizure of loaded and unsafely stored firearms near Vallican on

Feb. 4.

The investigation began, according to an RCMP news release, after a Kamloops man was arrested in November and found to be in posses-

sion of a non-restricted firearm contrary to his release conditions.

Police launched an investigation into the origin of the firearm and discovered it had been purchased less

than two months earlier by a former Kamloops resident who had since relocated to the Nelson area.

The investigation led police to believe more firearms were

outstanding and that their owner may not be complying with provisions of his firearms license. Nelson RCMP attended the suspect’s residence and executed a search

warrant, resulting in the seizure of three firearms, loaded and not safely stored. The suspect was not home at the time.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

ists, a series of high-production videos, and workshops for children, all of which reflect Tiny Lights’ signature blend of emerging artists from across the country that has defined their live festival for years.

Stephenson says the point is to keep serving artists and audience in a meaningful way.

“We need to keep them. We need to keep our communities super-engaged in what we’re doing.”

The Tiny Lights Festival has operated in Ymir for the past 10 years, using eight small venues for performances over three days, in effect turning the whole town into a festival site for line-ups of emerging national and international artists.

Tiny Lights Ignites Tiny Lights Ignites is an online mentorship series in which the participants pay nothing and in fact receive a $100 honorarium for being there.

“Our community is musicians and artists,” Stephenson says. “And because of COVID they’re really having a hard time. And so we thought that paid professional development for musicians and artists would be a really great way for us to to help serve them.”

The mentors chosen by the festival were asked to define not only what they want to teach, but also to whom they want to teach it. The festival accepts workshop regis-

trations depending on what community the mentor wants to reach.

For example, the Indigenous artist Ronnie Dean Harris prioritized Indigenous participants in his workshop about historic tracing of Indigenous individuals’ lineage.

Harris presented his Research to Resilience online workshop for Tiny Lights last year and another is scheduled for March 23, March 30 and April 27.

The singer-songwriter Tariq Hussain wants to work with young, emerging rural songwriters. His workshop, Try Songwriting for a Change, in which Stephenson says he will “explore the craft of lyric writing through close listening, discussion, experimentation, collaboration and practice,” takes place April 9, 10 and 11.

The other two workshops this spring will be Nature and We: Models for Creativity, Justice and Collective Resilience, by Khari Wendall McClelland on March 18, March 25, and April 1, and Writing and Performing Comedy Songs by Shirley Gnome on March 29 and April 12.

Registrations are now open on the Tiny Lights website.

Stephenson says this model is unique and it springs from an awareness of how much artists are affected by the pandemic.

“We wanted to be really serving artists, because artists

are really suffering right now, as we all know. We wanted to build community around artists, do anything we can do to value the work they are doing.”

Tiny Lights Insights The festival’s second big project is the production of 36 videos of performances by emerging artists, not livestreamed and not performed before an audience, released slowly over time on the Tiny Lights website. The videographers were paid and the videos are given to the artists at no cost.

“We were able to give musicians a product at the end that was really professional and they didn’t have to pay for it,” Stephenson says.

The program features a line-up of emerging artists reminiscent of the live festival.

Three of the videos are on the website now, with the rest to be released throughout the year.

Tiny Lights Kindle The festival is also planning a children’s program for the summer and fall.

“The third community that we serve is the Ymir youth,” says Stephenson, “and that we will be doing through Tiny Lights Kindle. It builds on the programming that we have always done for the kids of Ymir.”

She says planning is in progress and that two of the instructors will be Lucas Myers and Coco Love Alcorn.

Missing fishermen found after spending the night outdoors near Kaslo

By Staff Writer

Searchers located three fishermen Sunday who had been reported missing Saturday evening in the Kaslo area, according to a news release from South Columbia Search and Rescue.

Kaslo Search and Rescue located their vehicle and boat trailer on Saturday night, then put out a notice to watercraft to assist with the search.

South Kootenay SAR received a call from the family of one of the men early the next morning, saying the missing men had contacted them and were not in danger. They had become lost in heavy fog and were almost out of fuel, and had spent the night in a bay north of Kaslo.

Searchers found the fishermen Sunday morning at the Kaslo Marina.

Supporting individuals and businesses through the pandemic

OVID-19 has had a huge impact on all aspects of our lives, and I know it has been especially hard on our local businesses. We’re working to make life easier for families and providing targeted financial support for some of the hardest hit businesses through programs like the BC Recovery Benefit and the Small and Medium Sized Business Recovery Grant.

The revamped Small and Medium Sized Business Recovery Grant program provides grants — yes, you read that correctly, grants, not loans — of $10,000 to $30,000 for businesses that have been negatively impacted

by COVID-19. An additional $5,000 to $15,000 grant is avail-

This program launched in October but was recently streamlined after receiving feedback

from stakeholders. Key changes include: • Sole proprietors with fixed costs are now eligible.

• The length of time a business needs to have been in operation prior to the pandemic was reduced from three years to 18 months.

• If you are a bookkeeper or accountant, the province will pay you to support businesses through the application process.

• The total amount of funding was increased to $345 million from $300 million, which includes a $100 million envelope for the tourism sector and a topup of up to $15,000 for tourism businesses.

Businesses that have already

submitted applications do not have to reapply, and their applications will be automatically reviewed under the revised criteria.

This program runs until March 31, or until all the funds are fully allocated, whichever comes first.

In December, our government rolled out the BC Recovery Benefit, a one-time payment that is expected to help over 90per cent of British Columbians.

Through the benefit, families with incomes under $125,000 can receive $1,000 and families earning up to $175,000 will qualify on a sliding scale. Individuals earning less than $62,500 can receive $500, and those earning up to $87,500 will qualify on a

sliding scale.

As of the beginning of February, over 1.8 million people had been approved for the benefit, but I know there have been bumps in the application process for some.

Letters An open letter to Saturday’s mask and pandemic protesters I saw you walking up and down Baker Street on Saturday and wanted to let you know that you scare me. I am eight months pregnant and the last thing I want is to catch COVID-19 only to slip into a coma while in labour or die as other pregnant women have. While these cases are rare, I don’t want to be one of them. I am doing everything I can to keep myself safe, but I also don’t want to effectively live under house arrest.

I need to grocery shop.

I need to run errands downtown. I need to see my midwife and go to the hospital for tests. And I have the right to do these activities safely. So do seniors and other people with compromised immune systems. You are entitled to say what you want in a variety of venues. No one is disputing your freedom of speech, nor my freedom of speech to take issue with

your actions. Taking over sidewalks and forcing yourself and unsafe behaviours onto others as you do is harmful, cruel and one of the most selfish acts I have ever seen.

You don’t have to think the pandemic is real, or that there are deadly diseases, or get a vaccine or believe in science. But the rest of us would appreciate your respect and kindness by not forcing your beliefs onto us with actions that scare us and put our health at risk.

Re: Proposal to build new Kootenay Lake ferry in Nelson, Feb. 4 When the Chaka Mika mall was built, it literally paved paradise to put up a parking lot. Since then, Nelson seems to be making better decisions about how to preserve the lakeshore.

It was this forward-looking vision that led us as an

extended family to build along John’s Walk 14 years ago.

It came as an awful surprise when we were ambushed a few weeks ago with the decision to construct a new ferry within city limits, utilizing residential lands.

A recent meeting left us unconvinced that deep due diligence is being done.

The very short timeframe for any neighbourhood or city response leads me to believe this is deliberate.

When the Osprey ferry was built 21 years ago, the area was bare land. Since then, there has been remediation and an extraordinary amount of housing built in the area. In addition to Sproat Drive, there are multiple housing complexes: Silver Bay, Amber Bay, the Grain, Peter Ward’s apartment complex, a series of unnamed row houses and Lake View Village, a senior assisted living facility. This is a high-density housing area.

The project managers

suggest this is a temporary two-year process. This is years of community and lakeshore degradation.

Without impact studies, Nelson will once again be paving paradise.

Of more immediate concern is COVID. While the estimation of workers cited was fluid — from 40 to 80 — the majority of workers (steel fabricators needed for the project) would be coming and going from Alberta for reasons not explained.

Until Nelson achieves herd immunity through vaccination, this project should be paused.

With so many questions unanswered and a lack of details around governance of this project I would ask that the city, province and project managers put a pause on this initiative until good due diligence is undertaken.

Locally, we have already lost herds due to human encroachment on their territory. Why would we continue?

There are 14 cut blocks currently proposed around the north end of our Lake: Glacier Creek, Lost Creek, Duncan Lake, and also on the East Shore, Crawford Creek. Caribou have been tracked in this area.

We should be protecting the habitat for the caribou and the other species, plant, animal and bird, that are depending on that healthy ecosystem. These caribou are at risk and need connectivity to range.

I encourage you to speak up to protect this area, as the time is now to change how we look at our forest resources. We need to see them as habitat, and manage our resource extraction in a more sustainable, value-added way.

Romany Watt Osecki Nelson Government dragging its heels on protecting old growth The new NDP majority government campaigned on an election promise to implement all 14 of the old growth review panel recommendations, which was received in April.

One of those recommendations was to ban logging in at-risk old growth forests within six months. These deferrals are overdue – they should have been implemented by the end of October at the latest. While

the government delays, irreplaceable old growth forests are being logged and permanently lost.

Productive old growth forests, where big, old trees are found, now make up less than one per cent of forests in B.C. Despite their rarity and importance, 75 per cent of these old growth forests are unprotected and open to logging, and 99 per cent of remaining, productive old growth forests were excluded from this announcement.

Old growth forests provide beauty, enjoyment and habitat and take hundreds of years to grow.

Old-growth trees store carbon and help mitigate global warming and climate change.

The power of healing: Nelson’s Pat Henman publishes memoir about near-fatal car accident

Pat Henman got up on stage at a Capitol Theatre fundraiser in 2016 and sang Georgia On My Mind, accompanied by the Playmor Junction Big Band.

There was nothing unusual about that.

After all, Henman is known in Nelson as an accomplished singer, actor, and director.

She’s a mainstay in the city’s music and theatre scenes.

But this was Henman’s debut performance after three years of painful physical and psychological recovery following a highway accident in 2013 when a car she and her daughter Maia were in was hit head-on by a drunk driver near Cranbrook.

Not only had much of Henman’s body been destroyed and mostly put back together, but her voice had needed extensive therapy and she was told she would probably never perform again. Heading for the Capitol stage, she was scared.

“I had no idea how it would go,” she says.

“I knew I could make sound again. But it was not dependable.

Were those notes going to come out? Or was the throat going to constrict? So I thought in the back of my little devilish head, I have a great big band playing behind me. They’ll cover for me if something happens.”

They would cover for her because most of them knew her.

They had been fellow members of the Nelson music community for years. They had her back, as did the audience.

For Henman, that performance was a big step toward her goal of returning to more-or-less normal life in the community she loves.

“It led me to then just be stronger and take more risks,” she

says.

Henman has just published Beyond the Legal Limit: Surviving a Collision with a Drunk Driver, published by Caitlin Press, available in bookstores Feb. 19. The book recounts the accident, her excruciating physical and psychological recovery, the legal nightmare of negotiations between insurance companies, the criminal conviction of the driver, the need for legal advocacy and support for victims, her involvement with the group Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, and her re-entry into normal life in Nelson after being in hospital for almost a year.

Henman’s memories of the accident are spotty and horrific: pinned in the wreckage, the smell of burned rubber, shattered glass splintered into her skin, seat belts cutting into her torso, not feeling her body, not hearing anything.

At the hospital in Calgary, where the two were taken because their injuries were too complicated for the hospital in Cranbrook, Henman’s family was told she was not expected to survive. She was in an induced coma and had 19 surgeries in the first week, and about 25 in total. Maia was also in a coma for more than a week with multiple broken bones in all four limbs. Even if it is just legal jargon, as we were told, words matter. Those words that I read on the first documents … that suggested that the accident did not happen or that perhaps Maia and I were the culprits, those words cut like a knife. Why should victims of violent crime have to plead to be taken care of by a system that should be their advocates?

“The civil suit went on for three years,” Henman says. “And you live that every day, so it’s very emotional.

It’s almost too much, but we get through it.

The needs of victims One of the main characters in Beyond the Legal Limit is Larry Vezina, Henman’s husband, who worked relentlessly on medical, legal and emotional fronts for Henman and their daughter.

When Henman first arrived home from the hospital for the first time, in a wheelchair, she discovered that her friends had raised money for the construction of a wheelchair ramp to allow access to her front door.

Later, when the ramp was no longer needed, Vezina took the materials and turned them into planter boxes for flowers and food.

Larry made the boxes and planted dozens of living organisms to remind us what the ramp was all about: to help us heal and grow. Every time we walked outside after Larry built the garden boxes, we would comment on how beautiful they were and how awesome it was to be able to reuse the gift our friends and neighbours had arranged for us to make our lives easier.

Henman has emerged from this experience with an awareness of the needs of victims – their need for advocacy and support. She has become a director for MADD’s west coast regional committee. She also serves on an advisory committee that advises the Parole Board of Canada and Correc-

tions Canada on the treatment of victims of violent crimes.

A new scoreboard for Queen Elizabeth Park is among the projects being funded by the Columbia Basin Trust’s Basin Plays grant.

The City of Nelson will receive $15,000 for the scoreboard, which will add to ongoing renovations of the ballpark being done by the Nelson Baseball Association.

The Nelson Rowing Club has been granted $21,432 for equipment that increases youth participation, while Glacier Gymnastics is receiving $12,608 to buy new equipment including a balance beam, safety padding and uneven bars.

Nelson sports groups: Early closure of Civic Centre ice is red flag

The presidents of Nelson’s minor hockey and skating clubs say they are concerned for the future of the Civic Centre’s rink after its abrupt closure last month.

Lisa Upper and Krista Brackett, presidents of the Nelson Minor Hockey Association and Nelson Skating Club respectively, say they weren’t consulted before the Regional District of Central Kootenay announced the rink would shut down for the season on Jan. 29.

The RDCK, which manages the cityowned building as well as the adjacent Nelson and District Community Complex (NDCC), said a reduction in revenues was forcing the Civic and four other regional rinks to close two months before the ice season usually ends.

Minor hockey and skating are the only two sports that were using the Civic ice at the time of the closure. Adult recreational hockey also uses the ice, but has been sidelined this season by COVID-19 restrictions.

Upper said she’s worried that the premature closure of the Civic ice could give municipal and regional governments an impression the arena is expendable.

“We worry that the consultation process maybe doesn’t happen and that they just make a decision,” said Upper. “And we might just hear about it short notice.”

Minor hockey and skating typically rent ice at the Civic as well as the NDCC. Closing

the Civic, Upper said, meant minor hockey was forced to reduce scheduled monthly ice times from an average of 35 to 40 down to 18.

Skating, which was already running reduced programming after it had to cut adult skating an some beginner classes, lost one weekly session at the Civic.

“It’s a really important ice surface to have because the NDCC can’t house everybody at the same time when you have all of the minor hockey or men’s hockey leagues and the other rec leagues running,” said Brackett.

“There’s not enough ice time for everyone on one surface.”

Joe Chirico, the RDCK’s general manager of community services, said Civic had lost approximately $48,000 this season, mostly due to the lack of revenue from adult hockey.

The Civic, he said, earned $85,000 in revenue during the 201920 season. This year it had only taken in $31,000 by the time it was closed. Closing the Civic early, Chirico said, will help the RDCK keep its taxation amount the same for the next ice season.

In November, the federal-provincial Safe Restart Agreement announced it would provide $760,000 to the RDCK and $2.6 million to the city to support re-openings and local emergency response due to the pandemic.

But that money won’t be used to keep the Civic open. Chirico said the RDCK’s portion of funds will be distributed across the

200 services operated by the regional district throughout the year.

City manager Kevin Cormack meanwhile told the Nelson Star the city is still in the process of identifying COVID-19 expenses and lost revenue for the last year through 2022 before it can begin to allocate its funds.

Last August, city council voted to spend $80,000 on a redesign of the Civic Centre that will include energy upgrades, a new concourse and elevator in the 86-year-old building. Those upgrades would be paid for by the CleanBC Communities fund, which the city applied for. Recipients are set to be announced in the summer.

An investment in the Civic’s infrastructure suggests the building, which includes the Civic Theatre and Glacier Gymnastics, will continue to operate.

As for the rink, Chirico refuted rumours it would be shut down after this season.

“Any change in recreational service, that’s a long-term change whether we’re building something new or we’re changing the use of something …,” he said. “We are planning on operating the Civic in the 2021-22 season.

In the meantime, minor hockey and skating have each accepted cuts to their ice times to continue operating at the NDCC. For the skating club, that means losing access to its jump harness at the Civic, which helps figure skaters learn how to safely complete aeri-

Minor hockey meanwhile is just offering team practices at the NDCC, since the provincial health orders have banned games and team travel. That means the minor hockey season will conclude at the end of February, instead of stretching into March for playoffs.

Upper said parents have also reached out to express their disappointment, both with the RDCK as well as with minor hockey.

Some have asked for refunds, which Upper said the non-profit organization is not in a position to offer.

It’s not only users who value the Civic rink, she said, and Upper hopes local governments see what she says is obvious to people who visit Nelson.

“It is lovely. When we host tournaments, we get some pretty positive feedback about the old arena and having the museum in there.

People find it charming and appreciate the history of it.”

Nelson Leafs head coach Mario DiBella says he’s disappointed for his team after the KIJHL cancelled its season.

League commissioner Jeff Dubois said in a statement released Saturday the season would be called off after provincial health orders restricting recreation were extended Friday through at least the end of February.

Nelson woman reaches out to isolated seniors

Three years ago, Chandra Moon called a Nelson seniors home and asked the staff to pick four residents who could use some holiday cheer.

Moon, a single mother, wanted to teach her kids Jaeden and Mackenzie a lesson in giving.

So, on her own dime, Moon bought presents for some seniors who were isolated during Christmas.

“There’s so many of them who are just on their own,” she says. “They don’t have family around here and they don’t have that connection.”

Moon knows from experience how difficult living alone can be for the elderly.

Her grandfather lives with dementia at Mountain Lake Seniors Community in Nelson. Moon says he’s oblivious to the COVID-19 pandemic, and doesn’t understand why he’s stuck inside. The facility’s staff, she says, are limited by what they can do for residents.

“They can’t take them on outings down to the mall like

they used to and he can’t visit with his great grandkids and we can’t take him to Dairy Queen for an ice cream.

They’re stuck.”

Moon’s act of generosity became an annual tradition until last December when she wondered if she couldn’t be doing more.

A Facebook page called Adopt A Senior Nelson was started, and Moon was soon overwhelmed by the response.

Her initiative expanded beyond Mountain Lake, and ended up including 35 low-income people after a call for help from Kootenay Seniors.

“It blew up,” she says. “I think we helped almost 77 seniors. It was amazing. I ran out of people to help. I kept having people saying, ‘I’m ready to adopt, who can I do it for?’ I had no one left.”

Those seniors didn’t want shiny gifts. The things they needed were toques, socks, hats and grocery cards.

“When the manager of Kootenay Seniors was delivering, she said that the one thing that

she kept getting told was I can’t believe somebody thought of me. We’re in this community and there’s so many seniors out there who don’t realize that we care, or that they don’t think they have anybody.”

A November report by the B.C. Office of the Seniors Advocate found the majority of visits to seniors at long-term care and assisted living homes had dropped to once per week or less, and for 30 minutes or less each time. Fifty-five per cent of families had reported visits for an hour or more several times per week prior to the pandemic.

Kootenay Seniors program manager Lora Whitney thinks the pandemic has only intensified feelings of isolation among seniors.

The Nelson CARES-run project was forced to abandon in-person services last year for check-in calls along with food and prescription deliveries, and the response to those checkins was often characterized by despair.

Whitney had also run a holiday gift initiative for seniors before, but it wasn’t as successful until she was contacted by Moon. Whitney also credited Megan DeVries, another Nelson resident who helped connect gift-givers with seniors.

DeVries said she first put a call-out for donations on her business’s Instagram page @ vintage.pour, and was stunned when she ended up receiving

50-to-60 gifts, handmade cards and over $1,700 in grocery gift cards. ”It was just like a full-time job because I had so many people message wanting to help out,” says DeVries. “It was pretty amazing.”

Over two days, Whitney and her husband drove their packed SUV around the community delivering gifts to unsuspecting seniors.

“They were first shocked that they had been remembered, and they were so touched and grateful,” says Whitney. “And there are quite a few who said, ‘Oh, I don’t need anything.

Give it to someone who really needs it.’”

The success of the initiative now has Moon considering how to expand it.

Right now she’s looking for donations of cards for Valentine’s Day, the next holiday on her list. Those cards, she says, don’t have to be store bought to be included.

“We had a family out in Winlaw, they got together with a couple of their friends [and] made 35 handmade cards,” says Moon. “They were amazing.”

Moon is also hoping for more volunteers to help her organize the gift giving throughout the year. Birthdays, holidays, whatever merits a reminder that seniors haven’t been forgotten during a year when they are often on their own.

“It’s helping and it’s carrying that forward and sharing the love with other people,” says Moon.

How are you faring during COVID-19 times? There is growing concern in many sectors of our society about our mental health. Studies are showing an increase in addiction and the use of unhealthy coping strategies.

Zoom fatigue is something that many of us are experiencing, not to mention the stress that comes with spending a lot of time in front of our computer screens or our mobile devices trying to connect to coworkers, friends and family.

I struggle with depression in general and I know that I have felt an increase in isolation and stress. I’ve had to learn new skills to do ministry online. I’ve had to learn those new practical skills in

a very short period of time, and I’ve had to use online resources without having someone in my presence show me my mistakes.

The stressors that we normally have are exacerbated by the pandemic.

There are things we can do to help mitigate the stress that we are experiencing and to enhance our general emotional wellbeing.

I’m part of a faith community and that helps—my own personal spiritual journey but also being part of a network of relationships. I also have close friends with whom I connect. I started a yoga practice to help with back problems, but it is also a spiritual discipline that I’ve come to appreciate.

If I’m telling you things you already know, that’s great. If these are new ideas, let me offer a few more. If you are employed and receive benefits, you may have an Employee Assistance Program that offers short-term counseling and assistance with stress. If you don’t have a spiritual discipline, there are options like meditation, yoga, tai chi, mindful walking (using the labyrinth in Lakeside Park), or journaling to name a few. If you’re not already part of a religious community, make contact. Without adding to Zoom fatigue, there are many webinars and online gatherings to help you with your stress and mental health, and many people are finding deep connec-

tions with others online. Talk to your physician or phone the helpline. What about hobbies?

Weightlifting?

If you are feeling depressed or anxious, take the first step of reaching out to someone who can help; don’t suffer in silence or continuing isolation. Levi Taylor wins silver at B.C. junior weightlifting championships

What are some winter energy savings tips?

• Inspect doors and windows for cracks and worn weather-stripping. Use caulking and weather-stripping to seal the gaps around doors and windows, the foundation sill and places where pipes pass through the exterior walls. You can also install plug and light switch plate insulation to reduce drafts.

• If you have single pane windows, consider applying inexpensive window film. It can go a long way towards reducing drafts, if replacing them isn’t an option.

• Install a programmable thermostat and set it to 20°C when you’re home and 17°C when out or asleep. You could save up to 15 per cent on your home heating bills. (Or remember to turn down the temperature when you are not home, or asleep).

• Service your furnace annually and replace your furnace filter every three months or more often if you smoke or have pets.

How do I know if my toilet is leaking?

A

Usually you don’t. There are two types of toilet leaks – one that gives your floor a septic dose every time you flush, (these get noticed), and the internal leak from tank to bowl, that doesn’t.

These leaks are very insidious as they represent a constant loss of fresh treated water directly to the sewer and are multiplied by the high percentage of toilets that leak. If one is the sort to feel guilty about wasting resources this is a fairly easy one to fix. Drop some liquid food colouring in the bowl, If it “swirls” in a currently sort of way, There’s a leak.

Solution – put a new fill valve in.

Putting in the fill valve is easy as long as you shut the water off before you start, and the shutoff valve doesn’t leak.

Shut off the water, Flush, sponge out tank, change the fill valve. Put in a new supply tube, tighten up finger tight on the fine threads, then tighten with a wrench. Any leak will cause damage so do be diligent about that. Or you can call us at CGW.

Trail clothing store rockets to TikTok stratosphere

How does a small West Kootenay clothing store become a social-media sensation literally overnight?

All it takes is a little creativity from staff and a “Hot Boss.”

JJ’s Fashions in Trail has attracted over 1.2 million followers and over 22.7 million “Likes” on video-sharing app

“Our personal accounts have blown up too,” said JJ’s hot boss Rhylan Streloff. “I think mine is at 157,000, the store’s Instagram had 800 followers when we started, it now has 67,000. So it’s been pretty crazy.”

What is Myofascial Release?

Fascia is an uninterrupted 3-dimensional web of connective tissue that extends from head to toe. It is located between the skin and the underlying muscles, the muscles themselves, and around bones and organs. so in October, store employees Madicyn Dobie and Paige Witt decided to combine fashion with fun and create a post of two young employees swooning over their obliviously handsome boss.

They convinced Streloff to play along and Dobie filmed and edited a short 15-second video of the two young women popping to the Jack Harlow tune “Whats Poppin” in an effort to get their Hot Boss’ attention.

The video’s success was unexpected.

“He wanted to take the first video we made down,” said Dobie.

“Then we woke up the next day and it had three million views.”

Streloff was a little self-conscious and concerned at first, but soon the popularity and growing number of followers helped ease any reservations.

“It was funny, but I was worried because it was a little edgy, and I am always worried about what people think, but in the end we are just having fun,” said Streloff.

And as for the term “Hot Boss?”

“It’s a little strange for me, but I just have to take it as a joke, and have fun with it. Even the coffee bar across the street, they write it on my coffee cup.”

The exposure proved a big help in launching JJ’s online website, and while it hasn’t yet proved a huge financial windfall, its social-media reach is off the charts with over 100,000 million views so far.

“That (the pandemic) was the reason I didn’t take it down, and we kept doing this,” explained Streloff. “At any point we could be shut down and our business has been affected so to get an online store going, and building a following this way, at least we know we have the backup and a little revenue coming in.”

JJ’s has been in business for 37 years, started by Streloff’s grandmother in Castlegar and continued by his father.

Dobie has worked at JJ’s for the past three years, and is a nursing student at Selkirk College with an affinity for social media. Her own Instagram followers boast over 15,000, so collectively the store’s online profile is exploding.

The attention from outside the Kootenays is also growing, both in demand for product and for interviews. Streloff has been contacted by numerous news outlets, including a British newspaper.

“It’s so cool, you hear businesses like to give people freedom to create and everything and it all expands, and that’s all we did,” said Streloff. “We tried to have a relaxed attitude and let Maddy do her thing, and the next thing we know we’re blowing up on social media platforms, so it’s pretty cool to watch.”

As for Dobie, she’s thrilled with the results, neither anticipating the incredible exposure for JJ’s, nor their growing status as TikTok influencers.

“We’re literally ecstatic,” said Dobie. “When we hit one million followers, we were freaking out. We’re from Trail, and it’s such a small town and a small area so for anyone whether a business or anything.

“For a million people to follow you when you’re from such a small area - it’s insane.”

his entry is a story of humans coming together, without being asked, after a heartfelt conversation.

Life is a journey, one I’ve shared for over 20 years with my partner in life, Keith. This journey has had many highs and lows. The biggest high was when our son was born, eight years ago at Kootenay Lake Hospital. The birthing experience itself was severely traumatic and led to our beautiful baby boy to be deprived of oxygen, thus leading to a diagnosis of cerebral palsy at the age of one.

Fast forward to eight years later, through the struggles of life and with the added layer of COVID-19, and Keith living and working away in Vancouver, heavy times called for honest conversations. While Keith is a man who keeps a lot to himself, especially regarding our son’s challenges, he was in the company of a few work colleagues, sharing dinner after a long 12-hour workday. I was not there, so I can only say that Keith was expressing the struggles of our son’s lack of independence when it came to being able to feed himself, as he lacks full strength in his right hand (which is his stronger hand), thus creating many challenges most of us take for granted in daily life.

As Keith spoke, his colleagues listened and expressed their concern and empathy. It made for a real release for Keith and a greater understanding in his colleagues of some struggles our son faces.

What happened next is pure love. Keith went to work the next day, another long, tiring one and was asked to meet up yet again for dinner with a few work colleagues. When he walked through the door, he was met with a handshake and handed a card filled with words of encouragement and a lump sum of money that had been collected unbeknownst to Keith by several work colleagues over the course of the day. The money was raised to be put towards adaptive eating utensils, specifically a robotic spoon from the U.S. Keith was rendered speechless as was I when he told me over our evening chat on the phone that evening. Some of the people whom contributed had never even met our son, nor knew Keith well, but felt compelled to offer what they could. This act of pure love not only helped us afford things we would otherwise not be able to, but also gave us a renewed faith in the selfless love that people are capable of and also instilled in us (and our son) the great importance of paying forward kindness in any way you can.

Kootenay investment co-op offering micro-loans for small and medium sized businesses Submitted by West Kootenay Boundary Community Investment Cooperative

The West Kootenay Boundary Community Investment Cooperative (WKBCIC) recently announced a six-month pilot project of a micro-loan fund to assist small and medium sized enterprises. WKBCIC has earmarked $30,000 to be made available for individual micro-loans ranging from $1,000 to $3,500.

Rounding out the Micro-loan Fund Pilot Project, the WKBCIC will collaborate with KAST (Kootenay Association for Science and Technology) by filling the gap of providing a micro-loan opportu-

nity to clients of the new Digital Economy: Rapid Response and Resiliency (DER3) program being administered by KAST in partnership with Innovate BC and Western Economic Diversification.

“Today’s launch of the Micro-loan Fund Pilot Project and the collaboration with KAST will help small and medium-sized businesses compete during these unprecedented times,” said Erika Krest of the West Kootenay Boundary Community Investment Co-op.

The DER3 is a no cost or obligation program designed to help small to medium sized businesses in the Kootenays adapt to COVID-19 and enter or expand into the digital economy. The DER3 program currently provides all components to help businesses and entrepreneurs, except for the funds needed by a business to hire a digital service provider (if one is needed) to perform the work outlined by the DER3 team. The WKBCIC will provide micro-loans to businesses and entrepreneurs to bridge this gap.

An evaluation of the Micro-loan Pilot Project will be completed at the end of six months by the WKBCIC board of directors who will decide whether it should be contin-

ued and established as an ongoing loan program offered by the co-op.

The WKBCIC is a for-profit co-operative association registered in British Columbia. WKBCIC is member-owned, locally controlled and governed by a volunteer board of directors. The co-op finances businesses located in the West Kootenay Boundary regions and the surrounding communities of Grand Forks-Boundary, Trail, Rossland, Nelson, Castlegar, Slocan, and Arrow and Upper Kootenay Lakes.

Vivien Gladys Jorgenson October 6, 1942 - January 26, 2021 Vivien was born on October 6th, 1942 in London England. She was six years old when she travelled to Canada on the Queen Mary with her mom Vera and her brother Colin.

The family settled with her Dad in Nelson BC, which would become their hometown for years to come.

Vivien’s Dad, met her mom while on tour with the military in Europe. Unfortunately he passed away at an early age. This prompted Vivien into the workforce and her lifelong career with BC TEL at the age of 17. She loved working with BCTEL and was very good at her job.

In her early 20’s, while playing tennis, she met the love of her life, Alden Jorgenson. The two of them shared a passion for tennis and met many of their lifelong friends through the sport.

They later married and had two children, their daughter Natalie and their son Kent.

During the eighties, Vivien’s career with BCTEL took the family to Kelowna. Vivien’s mom Vera, also made the move to Kelowna. Vivien and Alden built their forever home just across the bridge in Kelowna, just the same as they had in Nelson. She enjoyed having family over for fires on the beach, diving off the dock and swimming in the bay. All which was enjoyed by her family, friends, children and grandchildren.

In Kelowna, Vivien and Alden were part of the local tennis community. She spent a lot of time on the courts with her tennis ladies, who also became some of her favorite travel companions.

In her retirement years, Vivien also immersed herself in the leadership of the TOPS organization. She met a lot of great friends during this time and had the opportunity to travel North America.

Vivien had a lot of very close friends who loved her sense of humor, her pleasant demeanor, her positive attitude and the smile she always shared with others.

Margaret Mary Mooney (Koep)

The last of her days were spent with Alden on their home on the lake. They enjoyed sitting on the deck, observing the ever changing lake views, watching the wildlife and taking care of their cat Lucky and his girlfriends, Mama Cat and Twinkle.

Vivien was predeceased by her parents and her brother Clifford. She is survived by her brother Colin, her husband Alden, daughter Natalie (Larry), son Kent (Danielle), and grandchildren Brad, Blair, Branden and Levi.

Vivien passed away due to heart complications on January 26th, 2021. She will be dearly missed by all of her friends and family.

Due to Covid, at this time there are no plans for a formal funeral. However; Vivien will be placed to rest with the rest of her family at the family plot in Nelson.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

(1935 ~ 2021) Margaret Mary Mooney – daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, mentor, feminist, social worker, hiker, lover of books, lover of nature, lover of ideas – died January 19, 2021, in Nelson, BC. Born May 13, 1935, Margaret spent her formative years in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. She married, raised her family, and found her calling in Lethbridge, Alberta. Years later, following her spiritual journey, she settled in Nelson, BC, then Sechelt on the West Coast, then back to Nelson for the last twenty years of her life.

Feisty, stubborn, and determined, Margaret deeply believed in justice. She was a passionate feminist in a time and place that frowned on activism and strong women. Wanting to make the world a better, safer place for women, she left the church and pitched in at the Birth Control Information Centre and the Women’s Centre in Lethbridge.

She dreamed of getting a post-secondary education, even as her family grew. In the late 70s she started attending university, trading babysitting with friends while she studied and kept the house going. It took years, but she finally attained her Bachelor of Social Work degree. And although her career was not a long one, she remained a lifelong learner, devouring books on everything from Buddhism to feminism and the environment to social policy.

She was intensely proud of her five children and loved us unconditionally. She believed we were capable of anything and supported our unique choices. She exposed us to a much wider world than many kids knew: symphonies, Renaissance Fayres, political protests, consciousness-raising and social justice. She delighted in her grandchildren and enjoyed watching them grow and blossom.

Life was not an easy road for Margaret. She was appalled by greed and ignorance, and she felt every injustice in the world deeply. But through both her reading and her desire to connect with those from all walks of life, she never lost her ability to care about others and to hope for change. Sadly, her health issues eventually robbed her of the ability to drive, then read, then walk, then talk.

Margaret was predeceased by her sisters Pat Weresch and Terry Davis. She is survived by sisters Maureen (John) Short and Helen Lynch, brothers Mike (Shirley), Dan (Claire), and Kevin (Nancy) Mooney, children Mark (Deb), Kathy (Dave), Rob, Gregg (Linda) and Jeff (Gayle) Koep, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Margaret will also be missed and remembered by many nieces and nephews, friends, neighbours, random strangers on the street, on the bus, in the park – as well as friends and family of the late Robert (Bob) Koep.

We are so grateful for the kindness and care shown to our mom by the wonderful staff at Nelson Jubilee Manor in her last months.

In accordance with Margaret’s wishes, she was laid to rest at the Dumont Creek Cemetery near Winlaw, BC, on January 23, 2021. Nature was her balm - may she find eternal solace in the trees and forest, where she can bask in peaceful, beautiful surroundings. We smile as we imagine mom once again going for her beloved long drives and long, long walks.

Edith Anne Farrell Webb November 17, 1928 – January 19, 2021

Anne was involved in many clubs and organizations in the Nelson Area throughout her life and was an active member in many of them up to the very end of her life.

She is missed by all who knew her.

Mary Flegel June 14, 1930 – January 23, 2021 On January 23, 2021 Mary Flegel passed away peacefully at Talarico Place in Castlegar, B.C. Her daughter Pearl was with her when she passed. Mary was born in Shoreacres on June 14, 1930 to John and Mary Malakoff, she was the youngest of five children.

Mary grew up in Hills. She left school after grade six, to help out on the farm. She started at the age 21 working in Sandon as a cook, this was where she met Frank, her future husband.

In 1952, Frank and Mary were married and moved to Longbeach, and had five children, Clarence, Ken, Blanche, Pearl and Ron. She worked for 35 years as a care aid at Willowhaven and Mount St. Francis. Frank passed away in 2013 and Clarence in 2018.

There will be a celebration of life at her house in Longbeach on her birthday in June of 2022 when it safe to do so.

Do you know the way to Pend d’Oreille? (Or how to say it?)

Two hundred fifty-ninth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names The Pend d’Oreille River (or Pend-d’Oreille or Pend Oreille) is 209 km long but only the last 24 km flows through Canada. The river originates at Lake Pend Oreille near Sandpoint, Idaho and heads west into Pend Oreille County in northeastern Washington, then turns north, through the

Colville National Forest, crosses the international border at Nelway, and loops west to join the Columbia just north of the international border at Waneta.

Pend d’Oreille is also unofficially the name of the valley between Nelway and Waneta.

The name literally means “earloop” or “hangs from ears” in French and was given by voyageurs after members of the Kalispel Tribe who wore dangling shell or bone earrings.

The earliest reference to the tribe by that name and spelling is in the Buffalo Morning Express of June 21, 1854: “On the 1st November, six Pend d’Oreille Indians came to this post [Fort Benton], and delivered up all the horses

that were stolen.”

The earliest reference to the river by that name is in the New Orleans Crescent of Aug. 13, 1855: “In Oregon the gold excitement continues. On the Pend Oreille river the diggings are said to be very rich indeed.” (Oregon Territory at the time included present-day Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.)

The river has also been referred to as the lower part of the Clark Fork of the Columbia River and shows up that way on some maps, including an international boundary sheet of 1913.

However, it appeared as the Pend D’Oreille River on Joseph Trutch’s 1871 map of BC, with an upper case D. Pend d’Oreille was officially adopted

as the Canadian spelling on March 6, 1913, but changed to Pendd’Oreille with a hyphen on Nov. 3, 1932.

The 15th Report of the Geographic Board of Canada, dated March 31, 1917, said it was Pend-d’Oreille River “not Bitter Root, Clark, Deer Lodge, Hellgate, Missoula, Pend Oreille nor Silver Bow” but didn’t specify where these other names appeared.

The US spelling was initially Pend d’Oreille, as in Canada, but according to the Missoulian of June 8, 1901, the US Board on Geographic Names said “it must be Pend Oreille and gives a list of rejected forms, including Pend’Oreille, Pend’D’Oreille, Pend O’Reille, Pends Oreilles,

So like Kootenay/ Kootenai and Okanagan/Okanogon, the Pend Oreille River changes spelling when it crosses the border, becoming the Pendd’Oreille. In 1980, the US Board on Geographic Names proposed altering the Canadian spelling to match the American one, but the Geographical Names Board of Canada said no.

Their mother Isabel’s middle name, Dale, came from Alan-a-Dale, the wandering minstrel who was one of Robin Hood’s Merry Men. In 1909, Isabel and daughter Mary joined the brothers at Sherwood from Winnipeg, where the family originally immigrated to in 1883. Father William and another brother, Wilfrid Deiniol (18811982), followed in 1910.

PORTES OUVERTES UN PARTENARIAT AVEC L' ASSOCIATION DES FRANCOPHONES DES KOOTENAYS OUEST (AFKO)

Le Centre WorkBC de Nelson ainsi que l'Association des francophones des Kootenays Ouest (AFKO) vous invitent à découvrir les services d’aide à l’emploi disponibles pour la communauté francophone des Kootenays.

Ils performent sous le nom de Cuckoo Tales, il s’agit de Roxanne Roy et Gabriel Gagnon. Ils seront bientôt à l’affiche du projet original que vous réserve l’Association des francophones des Kootenays Ouest pour l’AFKO FAIT SON SHOW 2021. Ces deux artistes forment un duo musical original entre des compositions électroniques, l’amour du jazz et de la chanson populaire. De Bach à Anderson Paak, Gabriel et Roxanne ont de multiples influences qui créent aujourd’hui un mélange unique que l’on vous invite à découvrir.

Une rencontre à travers la musique, il y a 14 ans.

C’est à Montréal que Gabriel et Roxanne ont fréquenté la même école secondaire à vocation artistique, avec une emphase sur la musique. Mais ce n’est pas pour autant qu’ils se connaissaient vraiment. À cette époque Gabriel étudiait en français tandis que Roxanne faisait ses études en anglais. À l’âge de 16 ans, ils ont participé au Camp Blues organisé à l’occasion du Festival de Jazz de Montréal, et c’est là que tout a commencé. Gabriel y été inscrit en tant que joueur de trombone, un instrument qu’il a appris à l’âge de 10 ans. Sa future partenaire, avait rejoint le camp pour ses qualités de chanteuse.

Ils ont ensuite tous deux étudié au CÉGEP Vanier à Montréal.

Gabriel y a préparé une technique en composition et arrangement jazz, tandis que Roxanne y a étudié en chant classique. C’est en tant que tromboniste que Gabriel a ensuite préparé un Baccalauréat en performance jazz à l’université McGill. Au même moment, Roxanne part étudier en français, à l’université de Montréal en chant jazz et performance.

Les Kootenays, un espace pour de nouvelles inspirations.

Après plusieurs visites de la région, notamment après un voyage à vélo sur les routes de la ColombieBritannique, Gabriel et Roxanne ont décidé de faire le saut et de déménager à Nelson. « On a exploré les montagnes, on a vraiment tripé sur les Kootenays, on est tombé en amour avec la région [...] » Alors qu’au Québec, ils participaient à des projets musicaux différents, c’est sur les terres des Kootenays que Cuckoo Tales a vu le jour.

Cuckoo Tales est un projet qui réunit les passions des deux musiciens: la vidéo, la photographie et la musique. Nous vous invitons vivement à explorer le site internet cuckootales.wordpress.com pour y découvrir les incroyables vidéos réalisées par le couple. Gabriel s’est plongé dans la musique électronique en y ajoutant la voix de Roxanne au chant. Dans les vidéos clips, les deux artistes filment les Kootenays qu’ils arpentent en hiver comme en été, du sommet des montagnes jusqu’au méandres des rivières. « Notre musique est inspirée par nos aventures de plein air. » Et maintenant, la scène.

Gabriel et Roxanne nous confient qu’ils se préparent maintenant pour

la scène. Le tromboniste passionné continue de travailler sur de la musique électronique en créant des accompagnements avec un looper.

Il s’agit d’un appareil qui répète à l’identique un signal enregistré. On retrouvera Roxanne au clavier et au chant. Son partenaire explorera la voix du beat box, et jouera de son instrument de prédilection, le trombone. Le duo prépare méticuleusement ce projet inspiré par leurs expériences musicales vécues à Montréal, leurs aventures dans les Kootenays et toutes les nouvelles compétences qu’ils ont acquis au fil du temps. Nous avons interrogé les deux artistes sur le choix de chanter en français et Roxanne nous a confié: “quand je chante en français, je me sens chez moi”.

Musician Mike Posner shares young Castlegar man’s drawing on Instagram

A young Castlegar man has had a taste of Instagram fame after a popular musician shared one of his drawings.

Noah Gariepy loves to draw, he also really likes Mike Posner of I Took a Pill in Ibiza and Cooler Than Me fame.

So when Gariepy came across a photo of Posner taken during his beard and bushy hair stage, he knew he had to draw it as a portrait.

“I love the picture of him,” Gariepy told the Castlegar News.

“At the time, the things he was saying in his songs just inspired me alot.”

It was one of the first portraits Gariepy had drawn, and it is an amazing replica.

that I look up to in a creative way,” said Gariepy.

“As an artist, it was a really cool experience.”

Gariepy graduated from Stanley Humphrey Secondary School in 2019 and he is now looking into furthering his art education.

At the moment he has immersed himself in refining his painting skills and growing his portfolio.

He says one of the biggest artistict influences in his life has been SHSS art teacher Angela Duclos.

“She has been a real mentor to me,” says Gariepy.

He also credits his mom with pushing and encouraging him in his artistic pursuits.

School District 8 sells former district office property

School District 8 has sold the former home of its board office.

The former elementary school turned office at 570 Johnstone Road has been sold for $1.12 million to Valid Manufacturing, according to a statement issued Wednesday by the district.

The Salmon Arm-based

company intends to use the 2.5-acre parcel to expand its engineering and electronics manufacturing operations.

SD8 board chair Lenora Trenaman said in a statement the revenue from the sale will be reinvested in the district’s capital operations plan.

“This transaction is winwin,” said Trenaman, “given the board’s commitment to upgrade other SD8 learning

environments and that it will provide the opportunity for more job creation in our community.”

The property was first home to North Shore Elementary School in the early 1960s, and was built shortly after the Nelson Bridge opened in 1957.

SD8 took over the property in 2004 as an administrative office before relocating to Central School n 2018.

Nelson man wins $100,000 with Scratch and Win

Wayne Boyd of Nelson was astounded this week when he scratched his Bingo Grand Scratch and Win ticket and realized he had won the game’s top prize of $100,000. Boyd had to check his ticket many times before believing what he was seeing.

“I checked the ticket about seven times and then realized I had an X,” Boyd said in a statement released Feb. 3 by the BC Lottery Corporation. “I couldn’t believe it. I was in shock that I won!”

The Nelson resident purchased the ticket at Wing’s Grocery on Baker Street, where he had his ticket checked by a retail clerk.

Boyd immediately called his daughter.

He plans to use some of his prize to help her with her mortgage and save the rest, but not before he treats himself to a new pair of Blundstone boots.

Meanwhile, Allan Johnson of Genelle has also won $75,000 with a Bingo Multiplier Scratch and Win ticket from the Genelle General Store, while Salmo’s Jonna Madsen won $50,000 from a Chinese Checkers Scratch and Win ticket purchased from the Salmo Esso on Railway Avenue.

Madsen said she’s going to buy a used car with part of the winnings, and put the rest away for a trip to visit family in Europe when it’s safe to do so.
