Being nominated and now standing alongside the other amazing businesses taking home an award is truly humbling.

I wanted to take this time to introduce myself because behind every small business is a family. My name is Katrina and I’m a local. I was born and raised here in beautiful Penticton BC. I decided last year to pursue the Work BC self-employment program and was directed to Community Futures where they taught me and helped me to become self-employed.

I remembered when I started and how distant it seemed that someday I could work with the amazing clients that I have now.

Fearing the unknown and dealing with a pandemic was not what I had expected.

They say the first year is rough in business, but dealing with covid shutdown I’m just happy to be up and working again.

My thoughts go out to any businesses that suffered through this trying time and know that we will continue to support local and love local.

I think we can all say that everyone at Pump are truly grateful for the communities

support. I felt incredibly humbled that the award had my business name on it and I will be forever grateful. I truly wanted to Pump some life back into the heart of downtown Penticton.

When I think about all of the amazing people who helped me on my way, I will be forever thankful for their hard work and dedication to get Pump Hair Salon started. I’d like to thank my daughters Tenleigh and Sloane; being a single mom they came with me to help and having two girls under the age of 10 they did so great with the whole process.

I’d like to thank my incredible mom Glenda of her hard work and support with renovations. Sydney Ruhland, owner and brew chief of Firehall Brewing in Oliver, was thrilled to hear his brewery had earned recognition in such a competitive beer market.

“It’s definitely pretty flattering,” said Ruhland of the nomination. “We hold all the other breweries in our region in really high esteem.”

Like Cannery, Ruhland believes it’s the people — staff and patrons — that make Firehall special.

“A big part of our mentality is to be a social hub and bring people together,” said the brew chief.

“Reinforcing community is essential to our values.”

Since opening in 2014, Bad Tattoo Brewing has earned a reputation among locals and visitors as one of the best spots to have a beer with friends.

Liam Hutchison, Bad Tattoo’s head brewer, said he’s beyond thrilled his team’s work has earned them recognition. “We’re constantly striving to improve, so we’re very appreciative that people have noticed that and we just want to keep putting out good beer for everyone,” said Hutchison. “We’re really just pushing what we do and trying to nail it.”

With so many great breweries in the South Okanagan, Hutchison said it’s the ability between competitors to grow together and support each other that has allowed craft beer to thrive and become a staple in the South Okanagan.

“We’re not just wine country anymore,” said Hutchison. “We’re really focusing on trying to make the region a renowned destination for craft beer.”

The South Okanagan may be known as Canada’s wine country; but thanks to the region’s blossoming brewery scene, it has quickly becoming known as one of the nation’s craft beer hubs as well.

Cannery Brewing and Bad Tattoo in Penticton, as well as Oliver’s Firehall Brewing, are three of the region’s preeminent breweries. It’s no wonder why these expert beer makers were chosen by readers as the top three breweries of 2020 in the Best of South Okanagan.

Patt Dyck, co-owner of Cannery Brewing, has been making beer in Penticton since 2001 when craft beer was just a fledgling concept. She had no idea 20 years ago that craft beer would explode into the massive, thriving industry it is today.

“I did expect it to get bigger… because there’s so much you can do with craft beer,” said Dyck.

“But I never expected it to broaden in the way that it did or as quickly as it did.”

When Cannery served their first brew back in the early 2000s, they were just the second brewery in Penticton.

“We really were kind of craft beer missionaries,” said Dyck.

Dyck was honoured that the Cannery was recognized as one of South Okanagan’s top three breweries, especially with so many quality brewers now in the region.

The people at Cannery are what makes it tick.

That’s likely why many patrons keep coming back.

“We are blessed with just an amazing staff,” she said. “We make great beer, we have good food, we have a funky space… but I think it is our

Luckily, they have plenty of great options to choose from. M & J’s Country Kitchen, Vagabond Kitchen in Oliver and Patio Burger in Penticton make up the top three best burger nominees as chosen by readers in the 2020 Best of the South Okanagan awards.

Having opened in March, right before the coronavirus pandemic practically shut the world down, Matt and Jennifer Hartle of M & J’s Country Kitchen faced many challenges getting their new business off the ground. However, there’s no substitute for a quality burger, and that’s exactly what you’ll find at M & J’s.

“That’s one thing I’ve actually always said, if I ever get my own restaurant I’d love to get best burger,” said owner and head cook Matt Hartle.

Hartle has gone all out with his burgers, with the motto that bigger is better. “It’s a Matt sized burger,” said the lifetime Okanagan resident.

Hartle uses half a pound of ground beef on a five inch bun, dressed with all the classic toppings. “It’s just a nice, drip down your forearm burger,” said Hartle.

Vagabond Kitchen is serving another mouth-watering burger in Oliver, right out of their silver trailer converted into a food truck.

Owner and chef, Graeme Uhlemann and his wife Vivian Fung have been serving delicious meals in Oliver since 2016. And while their

burger — a new addition to the Vagabond menu — is definitely top-notch, Uhlemann was slightly surprised to learn he had been nominated for best burger. The chicken sandwich, he said, is the truck’s signature item. Needless to say, the burger is pretty good too.

“I was just going for my version of a dirty, diner flat-top burger,” said Uhlemann.

Vagabond uses local beef ground fresh every day at a butcher shop across the street from the truck. The “peppery, gooey and cheesy” concoction is served with six ounces of beef, peppered bacon, cheddar cheese, arugula, pickles, pickled onion, mustard and mayonnaise.

If you don’t want to wait until next spring to try Vagabond’s burger you’d be wise to get down there soon, the truck will close for the season at the end of October. Uhlemann hinted Halloween might be their last day of the year.

Also open seasonally, Penticton’s Patio Burger is now closed until next April but, as voters have shown, it’s worth the wait. Penticton’s favourite burger spot opened in 2016 and quickly became a hit along Lakeshore Drive. Their 100 per cent Canadian chuck beef burgers are made to enjoy on the beach at Okanagan Lake.

There’s certainly no shortage of outstanding burgers in the South Okanagan. And as long as spots like M & J’s Country Kitchen, Vagabond and Patio Burger are around there will also be no shortage of debate about who does it best.

This year, COVID-19 threw an additional level of difficulty into the mix which has proven challenging to even the established businesses.

In the Best Of the South Okanagan, we received many nominations for Best New Business, who have not only survived, but thrived according to our readers.

We spoke to Katrina Hohmann of Pump Hair Salon, Matt and Jennifer Hartle of M & J’s Country Kitchen, and Ryan Hawk of Wayne and Freda’s coffee shop.

In addition to the many usual obstacles new businesses have to face, they now also have to navigate a quickly changing array of restrictions and guidelines. Some businesses, including restaurants, faced the additional hurdles of being closed down, some shortly after they opened.

The Penticton Western News spoke to the finalists for this year’s awards to ask what some “I was only open for eight weeks, and then they had to close me for another eight weeks,” of the difficulties they faced in their first year were, and how they overcame them.

“Today a customer came in and said she was 3rd generation of her family shopping at Fritz Shoes,” said Daniel.

Fritz Shoes opened in its current location at 151 Westminster Avenue W, in 1974 by Walter Fritz and his sister Elli Fritz. Elli worked in the shoe store until she passed away in 1996. Since then, Walter was the sole owner until his cousin from Germany, Daniel MayMarcinkowksi and his wife Janina May came in 2017 to gradually succeed the business.
