VALLEY NEWS Canal Flats breaks ground on new licensed childcare facility

in hand and flanked by his council. “Licensed child care is a need in our community and construction will officially be underway come October. The grand opening will be no later than September of next year.” Windermere is the nearest community to Canal Flats that offers licensed child care. Often, there is a waitlist.

Development of the 3,000 square foot state of the art facility was made possible by funding from the Union of B.C. Municipalities’ (UBCM) Community Child Care Space Creation Program and the B.C. Ministry of Children and Family Development’s Childcare B.C. New Spaces Fund. The final piece to enable the project was land gifted from Brian and Lorri Fehr’s Columbia Lake Holdings Ltd. The total project cost is projected to be $1.6 million.

“Making sure parents have access to quality, affordable child care close to home is critical to helping families flourish and economies grow,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Children and Family Development in a June press release. “We are so proud to support the construction of this new child care facility in Canal Flats that will provide local children with a foundation for lifelong learning for many years to come.”

As part of the village’s revamped Official Community Plan, there is an ambitious plan to attract and retain new residents. “We have a goal of getting Canal Flats’ population back to at least 1,000 people,” said Adrian Bergles, Chief Administrative Officer for the village. “An amenity like this will only help us reach these goals.” Canal Flats’ population figure from the 2016 federal census was 668. In the 2011 census, the number was 715. The next federal census is scheduled for May of next year.

Several conditions had to be met for the village to qualify to apply for the funding.

“The biggest factor was the requirement to have land in place to build on” said Sterzer.

Doctor Creek wildfire grows again Firefighters use planned ignitions to try and contain blaze

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Doctor Creek wildfire raging southwest of Canal Flats continues to grow, even as firefighters keep battling the blaze with different tactics.

The fire has been burning in the backcountry 25 kilometres southwest of Canal Flats since Tuesday, August 18th, and rapidly grew into one of only three provincially designated ‘wildfires of note’, prompting the British Columbia Wildfire Service (BCWS) to send in an incident command team. When the Pioneer last reported on the fire it was 5,800 hectares in size. However, last week the blaze leaped to more than 7,900 hectares, with most of that growth coming on the night of Tuesday, September 1st. Strong winds, with gusts up to 50 kilometres per hour, helped spread the fire in a southeasterly direction through the night of September 1st. Later in the week, on Friday, September 4th, the BCWS conduced planned ignitions along the southeast flank of the fire in an effort to contain it and prevent even further growth.

“The southeast flank of the fire remains very ac-

tive. Due to steep terrain, heavy equipment has been unable to operate in this area and local wind patterns have limited direct attack. The planned ignition will bring the fire’s edge down to pre-determined boundaries where crews will be able to safely deliver water to the fire’s edge,” read a BCWS press release that came out on Friday, September 3rd. “Crews have established containment lines along the south, southeast and southwest flanks of the fire in preparation for the planned ignition. Heavy equipment control lines and hand guard on the south flank have been tied into steep rocky terrain on the east flank where helicopters have been delivering fire retardant. To the west, the southern control line ties into a natural fuel break.”

The ignitions were done by helicopter, using Plastic Sphere Dispensers (PSD). PSDs shoot golfball sized polystyrene spheres down from the helicopter. The spheres are partially filled with potassium permanganate crystals and combust shortly after the spheres reach the ground.

A total of 185 firefighters, six helicopters, and 13 pieces of heavy equipment are in action on the Doctor Creek wildfire.

The Doctor Creek fire is now more than 7,000 hectares in size.

The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.

On Tuesday, September 1st at about 2:30 p.m. Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a single vehicle motor vehicle collision on Highway 95 approximately 3 km north of Brisco. The driver of a Mini Cooper rolled his vehicle into the ditch after hitting the shoulder of the highway. The driver and lone occupant was uninjured.

On Tuesday, September 1st at about 3:20 p.m emergency crews responded to a single vehicle motorcycle collision on Highway 93 near Dolly Varden in Kootenay National Park. A motorcyclist failed to negotiate a curve in the road and went into the ditch. The motorcyclist was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening

Search for missing Wilmer man concludes with discovery of his remains

On Saturday, September 5th at about 9:00 p.m. an officer conducted a traffic stop with a Dodge pickup in Canal Flats. While speaking with the driver, the officer noted an odour of liquor coming from the driver’s breath. The driver, who was found to be a prohibited driver, submitted to a breath demand and blew two fails. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days. The driver was released on an Appearance Notice to attend court at a later date in relation to driving while prohibited.

On Sunday, September 6th at about 8 p.m. an officer stopped the driver of an Acura NSX for having an expired val decal. While speaking to the driver, the officer formed suspicion that the driver had alcohol in his body.

The driver complied with a breath demand and blew two fails. As a result, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

In the evening, a frontline RCMP officer, in the RCMP Air Services fixed-wing aircraft, located what searchers later determined to be a deceased individual near Wilmer Lake. The B.C. Coroners Service has now launched an independent and concurrent fact-finding investigation into the man’s sudden passing.

“Police do not believe that criminality was involved in Martin’s sudden death” said Corporal Jesse O’Donaghey, of the RCMP’s Southeast District.

The searchers also found Martin’s Pitbull Rusty, which was in good health. Rusty had stayed by his master’s side until searchers reached the scene.

Local student filmmaker creates short historical movie set in Invermere

Think of it as a blast from the past with a modern twist: a dedicated summer student at the Windermere Valley Museum with a penchant for media production is set to release a short historical film featuring icon-

Invermere local Greydon Rohrick graduated David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) and has begun media studies at the University of Lethbridge. This summer he’s been working at the museum while doing courses online (due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic). Partway through the summer, Rohrick was puzzled by a conundrum: Inver-

this really great museum here, but nobody was visiting it. I thought maybe people just don’t know about it. We didn’t have any modern advertising,” said Rohrick. So he stepped in and made a short commercial style promo video for the museum.

It went splendidly, and so he pitched something a little more ambitious: an actual film. They museum gave the green light, and quick as a wink, Rohrick had written a script, had rounded up local actors, recruited a few friends, dug up some period-specific costumes and the cameras were rolling.

“It’s going really well. Filming is wrapped up and we are in post pro-

duction. It’s still the early stages of post production, but it looks like it’s going to work out,” Rohrick told the Pioneer. “The purpose is both education and entertainment. I want to get people excited to see the museum and learn about Invermere’s history...

The hardest part was coming up with the plot.”

The film follows four main characters and a scattering of minor characters through various points in Invermere’s history, depicting how their lives change and how Invermere’s situation evolves as the decades march by. Some of the characters are literally taken from the pages of history: there’s the famous (or infamous, depending on your perspective) Robert Randolph Bruce and the iconic Blanket Jones (who made his name by making long forays into the alpine high country with little more that a blanket on his back). Other characters are based on Rohrick’s creative imaginings, such as local shopkeeper who plays witness to Invermere’s changes.

Rohrick admits that the film is a ton of fun for a history buff like himself, adding “the museum was the perfect place to film this. The site is like walking back in time into a Western.”

Filming took place on Saturday, August 22nd and was done in just four hours, which Rohrick concedes is lightning speed, even by the standards of a short film.

“It all came together quite quickly, but it worked out. The costumes, for instance, came from everywhere.

We pulled stuff out of our own closetses, and then actually scavenged most of the rest from the museum basement,” he said. “The moustache I wore, I literally took it off a mannequin in the museum. And it was great. I mean, I wish I could grow my own handlebar moustache, but sadly I can’t yet, so it had to do.”

Rohrick is not sure exactly how long it will be before the film is launched on Facebook, Youtube and other platforms, but he’s hopeful he’ll get it out pretty soon. Follow the Windermere Valley Museum’s Facebook pages to catch the film when it does come out.

PERSPECTIVE New editor aboard

Historical Lens

By Camille Aubin camille@columbiavalleypioneer.com Hello, I wanted to introduce myself as you will see my name appear more than often in this newspaper. I’m Camille Aubin, the new editor of the Pioneer!

I’m originally from Québec. Following my communication and writing studies, I moved more than three years ago on the western side of Canada to thoroughly experience my yearning for the great outdoors.

In high school, I already saw myself in the communication world. Back then, I was launching a radio show because I wanted the students to be more informed of what is occurring in their establishment.

This way, I believed, they could be implicated in some decisions usually taken for them. Even before that happened, in elementary school, at 10 years old, I reported the news on the intercom. Not surprisingly, I got into journalism in university. And now here I am working for a newspaper. I keep the same purpose in mind as when I was younger. I want you to be acquainted with me and to be involved as a part of this community.

If I am not at the office, you will find me running, mountain biking, or climbing. I’m an outdoor enthusiast, beans lover and coffee drinker.

In summer 2016 and 2017, I hiked with my partner the Pacific Crest Trail. This 4,200 kilometers trek traverses the United States from Mexico through to Canada. Last winter, I completed the Te Araroa in New Zealand on foot. It took me three months and a half to walk 3,000 kilometers across the country on both islands. Still, my favorite trek, by far, was the Great Divide Trail (GDT) in the Canadian Rockies that I finished just a couple of weeks ago. The GDT follows the continental divide between Alberta and British Columbia. I fell in love over and over again with our country. I feel privileged and grateful to live here. These experiences made me who I am today. It confirmed that I was meant to be surrounded by these forceful and majestic mountains.

How lucky am I to work in journalism in the Rockies? Both my passions are united.

Wave advocates Dear Editor: My letter is about our lake and I’m addressing it to youth and teens on big boats and jet skis.

To youth because I’ve experienced how you apply factual information for fast and positive impact on health and cooperation, as evidenced by your good, long lasting effect on those of us who used to be smokers.

I’m offering information and making a request to you. Will you become wake advocates? Would you be leaders in attention and response to the affects of your big boat’s wake? In the 15 years I have kayaked — on lakes, in rivers, at the ocean. I have never been in water as treacherous as Sunday evening, before the community supportive Brent and Brent concert.

We were kayaking from Windermere to the concert but didn’t get there. We had to beach our kayaks because of the wild artificial waves created by big boats playing in close to shore. On Sunday (and more and more often) your big boats, jet skis and

the boats making deep surfing waves, creating artificial waves that, as a kayaker make me feel like being trapped in a traffic jam of unpredictable, wild crosscross waves. On Sunday it was not only us who fought the artificial waves but also the momma duck with her flotilla of tiny babies - I lost sight of them and hope they survived.

So, this is my request to you. Please go play well off shore. I’m asking you to take the no wake zone out to the middle of the lake. Go more slowly when coming and going. For sure, do enjoy your big boats, however, please become wake aware!

It’s lovely to feel confident in entrusting you with this huge opportunity, as together we can make it a given of minimal on-shore wakes. I look forward to seeing you in the bow, being the watchful wake advocates as we cooperatively share and care for our lake.

Oh and P.S.: music volume at five not 15, please.

“Brian and Lorri Fehr’s very generous donation to the village of a quarter acre of their land [on the southwest corner of Burns Avenue and Grainger Road enabled us to proceed with our application.” The application process took the village staff eight arduous months of work. “In the initial stages we had a consultant help us with a childcare assessment and from there it was about putting all the pieces together,” said Sterzer.

Everything about the 40-child capacity facility will conform to B.C. childcare facility guidelines. Ted Tam of Calgary based Tamson Developments is leading the project’s development, general contracting and construction. “The centre’s design is with flexibility in mind,” he said. “It’s designed to accommodate infants, toddlers, and after school care for kids.” Once complete, the facility will feature a fully functional kitchen, a sleek indoor/outdoor transition zone, retractable doors, and plenty of recycled fresh air. “With the pandemic we’re in, lots of fresh air was a definite priority in the centre’s design,” said Tam. His firm has a mix of residential and commercial experience in development and construction.

The centre, yet to be given a formal name, was also designed to accommodate future additions if the community outgrows its 40-child capacity. Canal Flats agreed to a minimum fifteen year operating commitment for the building to be used as a child care centre. And it must open its doors to the public no later than September, 2021. Staff will have a diverse set of skills. The College of the Rockies will serve to funnel toward the centre qualified workers with the necessary credentials.

Canal Flats council’s success in bringing their community critical infrastructure projects such as licensed child care has resulted in an undeniable buzz in the Columbia Valley about the village. In the four years since Canal Flats saw its mill close, progressive planning and action is finally starting to payoff, and out of province entrepreneurs eyeing the community to potentially base their business have indicated they like what they are seeing.

Albertan eco-entrepreneur Saawan Logan started her business of bottling Canadian spring water in aluminum receptacles rather than plastic within the past year. North Water can be found in independent grocers across Western Canada and at large chains such as Safeway. Logan has ambitious growth targets for her nascent business. Currently, she is in talks with the Columbia Lake Technology Centre (CLTC) to bring a bottling plant to the community.

“The size of plant we are looking at right now [five acres of land] could potentially create 30 to 40 new skilled jobs in Canal Flats,” said Logan. “Seeing projects like the child care centre come to fruition, it makes my decision that much easier on whether Canal Flats is right for my business and the families of the people I would employ.”

Lorri Fehr agrees. As CLTC’s chief executive, she believes certain building blocks are crucial for a community to grow and thrive. “A workforce will come to Canal Flats only after we establish the foundations to attract and retain young families eager to work,” she said. “To see someone like Saawan interested in investing in our community, hers is exactly the kind of progressive, job creating business we want here. We’re aiming to have for four season families move here. Not just secondhome owners.”

Fehr sees the childcare facility as community builder. “It’s going to bring kids and, importantly also, their parents together. To this day, some of my closest friends are the parents of my children’s friends I met at our community’s child care facility.”

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com The farm-to-fork, local food scene has been exploding in the Columbia Valley in recent years, and now there’s a simple, straightforward way for local residents and visitors to identify the fruits — both figurative and literal — of this boom, in the form of Columbia Valley Made and Columbia Valley Grown logos that, as of this summer, can be found on food products made and grown right here.

The logos are the initiative of Columbia Valley Food and Farm (CVFF), a nonprofit group dedicated to promoting the local food movement here in the valley.

“It just started this summer, although this is something we’ve been talking about for years,” CVFF cochair Alison Bell told the Pioneer.

The CVFF received funding this year from Columbia Valley Community Economic Development to produce the annual Columbia Valley Local Food Guide, and part of this funding agreement involved the CVFF producing logos to put on local-created food products. With a bit more funding from Community Futures East Kootenay, CVFF was able to get the logos printed this summer and to hire a Local Food Ambassador to promote them.

Bell outlined that CVFF is still working on distribution of the logos, but for the moment, as a kind of pilot project, the logos have been given out to growers, food producers, food processors, and restaurant, cafe and culinary business owners listed in the Columbia Valley Local Food Guide.

We’re strict on that, because the logo has to have integrity,” said Bell. “So far the logos have been really well received. The producers using them are proud to have them on the food they’ve grown. Our local food culture in the valley is growing, and this will help that even more.”

KCP accepts proposal for Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund Submitted by the Kootenay Conservation Program The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP), on behalf of the Regional District of East Kootenay, is now accepting proposals for the Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund. ”The Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund is an excellent resource for organizations that need help funding local projects that support fish and wildlife habitat, water quality, and other conservation values in the region,” said Juliet Craig, KCP program manager.

The Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund (CVLCF) is a dedicated fund that each year provides financial support to local projects that help conserve and restore the valley’s world-renowned natural surroundings. The first of its kind in Canada, the CVLCF has created a new model for community conservation that’s being imitated across B.C. and beyond. Locally, it has resulted in more than $1.8 million in funding for almost 75 projects since 2009, and has helped leverage over an additional $17 million for those projects.

In 2020, eight projects successfully received CVLCF funding: lake monitoring on Columbia Lake and Lake Windermere by the Columbia Lake Stewardship Society and the Lake Windermere Ambassadors respectively, treatment of the noxious weed Leafy Spurge by the East Kootenay Invasive Species Society, forest restoration of the Luxor Linkage Conservation Area

by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, conservation and enhancement of critical habitat on agricultural lands through the Farmland Advantage program via the Windermere District Farmers’ Institute, the ongoing re-introduction of the endangered northern leopard frog to the Brisco wetlands by the Calgary Zoo, biodiversity conservation of the Columbia Wetlands by the Columbia Wetlands Stewardship Partners, and conservation of endangered swallows by Wildsight Golden through the Columbia Valley Swallow Project.

KCP, which works in partnership with the Regional District of East Kootenay to administer the CVLCF, is encouraging conservation groups operating in the Columbia Valley to submit funding proposals for any 2021 projects. Community groups and associations can partner with an eligible non-profit to qualify. If you have a project idea, it is highly recommended that you contact the KCP Program Manager prior to submitting an application to discuss your project idea.

The deadline for applications is 4:30 p.m. MT on October 30, 2020. In November, a technical review committee will review project proposals and make recommendations to the RDEK for final funding approval. Copper Point Resort extends long term renter program through winter

Launched in June, the resort saw an opportunity to help supply a shortage of rental housing units for valley residents and to address a sharp decline in resort bookings stemming from COVID-19.

“The terms will begin on October 1st and end on April 30th, 2021,” said Bailey Yeats, Copper Point Resort Marketing Manager. Terms beginning November 1st, will also be considered. The units made available in June didn’t take long to fill.

A lesson in safety was rolled out to Little Badgers students last week when the Mounties made a special cameo at the daycare.

On Sept. 2, Invermere RCMP Sgt. Darren Kakuno joined Cranbrook Cst. Monte Webb and Cst Katie Forgeron between 10 and 11 a.m. at the Eva Joseph Learning and Cultural Society, to instruct children about bike safety on the lands of the Akisqnuk First Nation.

“We inevitably have to deal with a lot of negative situations as police officers and it’s positive interactions like this that carries me through all the negative aspects of the job,” said Sgt. Kakuno after the event. “We have a great group of members in our detachment who really enjoy attending these special events; I only wish we had more time to devote to them.”

While there is no formalized schedule to facilitate bike rodeos for children in the Columbia Valley, the RCMP indicated that community requests from daycares and schools are accommodated whenever possible.

“We usually try to run a couple bike rodeos in the spring, unfortunately due to COVID and the closure of schools, this is the first bike rodeo we’ve been able to run this year,” said Kakuno.

“Bike rodeos with the younger children are great because they learn valuable safety lessons and good habits before the bad habits set in. I remember when bicycle helmets for recreational riders were first introduced.

It wasn’t cool to wear a bike helmet back then. Now you’re not cool if you don’t have a bike helmet. The children are so proud of their helmets. It’s great to see.”

Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund Request for Proposals The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) and Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) are seeking proposals for projects that will benefit conservation in the area from Spillimacheen to Canal Flats utilizing the Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund (CVLCF).

The purpose of the Fund is to provide local financial support for important projects that will contribute to the conservation of our valuable natural areas. CVLCF funding is available for conservation projects that result in the reduction to a known threat to biodiversity. The themes for the Fund are water conservation, wildlife and habitat conservation, and open space conservation.

Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide value for money through partnerships with other funders will have priority. Proponents must be a registered not-for-profit organization, First Nations band, or local government. Unqualified groups or organizations may partner with a qualified organization. A Technical Review Committee will review project proposals and make recommendations to the RDEK for final funding approval.

Province requests mandatory CWD testing

By Breanne Massey Local Journalism Initiative Reporter In an effort to prevent the spread of a deadly disease in the Kootenay region, hunters will be required to submit the heads from deer harvests for chronic wasting disease (CWD) testing.

The Government of B.C. recently announced a mandatory sampling program for hunters in southeastern B.C. so that deer, elk and moose populations can be monitored for CWD, which was first reported near Libby, Mont. in June of 2019.

“It’s only mandatory for any deer harvested in wildlife management units 4-1 to -7 in the Kootenay region,” said Helen Schwantje, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development in an e-mail to the Pioneer. “The reason why is that the disease is present across the border (within 60 km) in Montana and we want to know as soon as possible if it enters B.C.”

CWD is a fatal nervous system disease that affects members of the deer family. It is caused by an abnormal protein when healthy animals come into contact with infected soil, food, water or animals.

The provincial wildlife health program has been monitoring the disease since 2002, especially in high-risk regions like the Kootenays and the Peace River region. Hunters are being encouraged to submit animal heads to designated CWD testing sites due to its prominence in Alta. and Mont. so far.

EDGEWATER & HOLLAND CREEK SANITARY SEWER FLUSHING BEGINS SOON

WATER SYSTEM FLUSHING

The Regional District of East Kootenay is gearing up for its regular maintenance work on the Edgewater and Holland Creek (includes Lakeview Meadows) sanitary sewer mains to remove settled and accumulated material.

This maintenance is scheduled for September 21, 2020 to October 2, 2020.

During this process, the contractor will be setting up their flushing apparatus at each service access (manhole) in the roadway and releasing pressurized water through the sanitary sewer main pipe to remove buildup.

A bubbling and/or vacuum effect may be noticed in your drains and toilets due to this maintenance flushing. It is recommended to keep all toilet seats closed and cover any floor drains.

Internal plumbing consists of “P” traps, which hold a volume of water to prevent sewer gasses from migrating into a home. During the flushing process, this water could be drawn out of the traps. For that reason, it is important to refill all plumbing traps by running the water in your sinks and floor drains after the work is complete.

This preventative maintenance process is necessary to reduce the potential for a sanitary sewer main backup which could result in damage to property. The RDEK would like to thank you for your patience during this regular maintenance.

Please note: We would like to remind those residents with homes on the low pressure sewer system (homes with individual sewer pumps) to please flush plenty of water through your system prior to vacating the home for an extended period of time. This practice will prevent sewer odour from forming and releasing upon initial use after sitting idle for week or months.

Mount Nelson Community Garden

Tucked away in the Mt. Nelson Athletic Park near the tennis court and BMX track is the Mount Nelson Community Garden. This garden is a community garden that was conceived a couple of years ago and finally came to fruition this spring. The District of Invermere and Groundswell Community Greenhouse have come together to create a growing space on the school board property. There are 10 raised beds that are rented to Invermere residents and another 10 beds that were scraped together to help utilize the space and start to de-

brimming with vegetables, herbs and some flowers.

There are peas, beans, lettuce, beets, basil, spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, peppers, cauliflower, and broccoli to name just some of what is growing. There is also zucchini and winter squash and a crazy experiment growing potatoes in pots.

We have it going on and we would like to invite you to come by and talk and share gardening stories.

I would like to see this space grow and expand over the years. The way to make this happen is to put your name on a waiting list for a bed next year. If there is interest we could make it happen.

This garden couldn’t have happened without several dedicated volunteers who contributed both time and materials to make it happen.

Carson, Edward (Ed) 1944-2020 The family of Edward (Ed) Carson is saddened by his passing at his home in Windermere, B.C. on August 22, 2020.

Ed was born in Cranbrook, B.C. October 22, 1944.

Ed had a great love for the outdoors. Hunting and fishing were his passion. He loved being with family and friends sharing his many stories.

Ed retired in 2011 after 46 years with Crestbrook Forest Industries.

Survived by daughters Cherie and Denise and 2 grandchildren.

Brother John (Vivian), sisters Pat, Mary (Vince), Brenda (Ray), Val (Orval and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by wife Starr; mother Dorothy Cooper; father Jack Carson; stepfather Henry Cooper and brother Dean.

Ed will be loved and missed by all who knew him.

Frocklage, Shirley 1942-2020 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, grandma, sister and friend Shirley Frocklage at the age of 77. She passed away at Columbia House on August 21, 2020 after a short battle with cancer.

Shirley was born in Golden, B.C. on November 22, 1942 to Elizabeth and Lloyd Watkins. She has a younger sister (Jean) who still resides in Golden. Shirley grew up in Brisco on the family farm where she created many wonderful memories. Shirley moved to Vancouver where she attended UBC and became a teacher. She taught for a few years in Salmon Arm until she married Walter Frocklage on August 28, 1965.

They moved back to Brisco where she taught a few more years. They built a house in Invermere and had 2 daughters, Pam and Kim. Shirley moved back to Duncan in 1987 where she met Al Caron.

She was his little cupcake.

Shirley was passionate about gardening. She loved her flowers and loved to entertain her friends in her gardens. She enjoyed travelling, camping, shopping, touring around and helping others.

Shirley moved back to Invermere in 2018 to be closer to her family. She loved having them all over; feeding them and telling them stories and cheering them all on.

Shirley is survived by her daughters Pam (Kendyl) and Kim as well as her grandchildren; Wyatt, Trystan, Taylor, Quintynn, Ty and Taytum. She is also survived by her sister Jean in Golden along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and good friends.

She was predeceased by her long time partner Al Caron in September 2019. She will be dearly missed by all those that knew her.

She was a light to everyone.

Memorial Donations can be made to the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley www.hospicesocietycv.com or a charity of your choice. A private Celebration of Life will take place for Shirley. In the Columbia Valley, there’s a new (this summer) social media management firm catering to businesses looking to outsource social media: Kootenay Socials.

In Canada, use of social media is near ubiquitous.

Ninety percent of Canadians use mobile communications services. Ninety percent of those folks have a smartphone.

Ninety-four percent of those engage in social media. Those three figures are from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications’ (CRTC) 2019 communications monitoring report.

Every major social media platform is free to use. For Canadian, and by extension Columbia Valley business, social media is a no-barriers-to-entry opportunity to engage with customers, current and potential. The value proposition is difficult to ignore. No barriers-to-entry also means it’s an intensely competitive space to reach, with scarce resources, for new businesses. In recent years, Canada has seen the growth of a cottage industry of third party so-

cial media management firms selling their expertise in deploying effective social media management. Businesses are increasingly aware effective social media management takes time, energy, and money. For some, it makes sense to hire a social media manager. For others, it makes more sense to find a third party vendor to do that job.

Longtime local Andrea Meadus is Kootenay Social’s founder and sole proprietor. Meadus brings to the table a skillset largely forged while working for a Greek tour operator agency.

In that role, she marketed vacation packages to the agency’s German speaking clientele. Meadus immigrated to Canada from Austria with her Canadian-born husband more than ten years ago. She speaks multiple languages and, with her husband and adolescent children, enjoys a four season active lifestyle skiing, biking and hiking.

Invermere entrepreneur Sue-Rose Read pivots Oneberrie toward re-usable mask production

Invermere entrepreneur Sue-Rose Read recently pivoted her Oneberrie business of baby bath-time products to now include a line of reusable adult-use masks. “Being small has its advantages,” said Read who moved her business into a new space beside Invermere’s Backdoor Wine Cellar earlier this summer.

“It allows us to be nimble and proactive to respond to the changing needs of our customers. With the onset of COVID-19, pivoting to fill a gap of quality mask production went a long way to sustaining my business through this challenging time.”

Oneberrie masks have an inner and outer layer made with a viscose bamboo spandex terry and cotton flannel materials respectively. “There was a steep curve this spring to redirect my team’s efforts toward sewing masks, but we were ready for it, had the inventory, and pounced on the opportunity,” said Read. Oneberrie began selling masks in March. Most businesses who pivoted didn’t launch their lines until May. Read started Oneberrie seven years ago while on maternity leave as a hobby. “I was looking to do something and get busy,” she said. “While I was bathing my four month old, I just knew there had to be a better way.” As anyone who has bathed a baby knows, it is a slippery, hot-potato like juggling act fraught with safety risk. “At the time, one directional aprons did exist, but not good enough for what I needed.” said Read, a P. Eng-designated engineer by training. Before taking the plunge into full-time entrepreneurship, she worked in Alberta’s oil and gas sector in sales and reservoir engineering roles. Eight years ago, she met her husband, local entrepreneur David Read of Valley Hawk Security, moved to the Columbia Valley and started a family. The Reads now have three children together aged 7, 5, and 2.

“I always had side hustles and ideas for businesses and with Oneberrie, finally I had one that stuck,” she said. Oneberrie now offers towels, robes, accessories, and is soon adding a ladies collection. “[Oneberrie] is still a single director company. The ethos is to empower women, give them financial freedom and flexible work options. All of my seamstresses are women and I also aim for Oneberrie to be a minimal waste manufacturing business.”

Read’s business was quickly gaining momentum before the pandemic hit. She received U.S. and Canada patents for her Hands Free towel innovation, and inked national retail deals for her products in retailers such as Indigo, and West Coast Kids.

Independent boutiques across Canada carry Oneberrie products. “I was fortunate to be accepted in Canada’s Futurpreneur program,” she said of Oneberrie’s impressive growth trajectory. “Futurpreneur provides really great resources such as cash flow management spreadsheets, business planning tools, and they also matched us with more experienced entrepreneurs willing to provide their mentorship.”

How big is the market she’s chasing? In 2018, close to 400,000 babies were born in Canada,” said Read. “On average, parents purchase or receive four towels per baby. My goal is for Oneberrie to be one of those four towels.” She also has her sights set on the U.S. “Obtaining the U.S. Patent for Oneberrie is a huge step in the right direction for gaining access to that market,” she said.

There’s a Tony Robbins quote Read is particularly fond of. “It’s not the lack of resources, it’s your lack of resourcefulness” Recently, FedEx Canada announced the recipients of the company’s #SupportSmall grant initiative, a program that awards $5,000 to 30 Canadian small businesses affected by COVID-19. Of the 30 winners – 15 small businesses are based in Ontario, six in BC, four from Alberta, three in Quebec, and two from New Brunswick. Education, entertainment, engagement and emotion. “With a social media profile, businesses can educate clients about their products, leaving customers empowered and trusting you. People love to be entertained, entertaining while educating is what your followers are looking for. Engagement is most important, as people comment and have questions, they are looking for immediate response.”

have had to digitize overnight – building new and expanding existing e-commerce platforms in order to both survive and also satisfy evolving consumer shopping preferences.

Read has also received generous support from the Columbia Basin Trust’s School Works Program. The program provides wage subsidies to employers to help them hire full-time students on a part-time basis throughout the school year. It’s meant to provide opportunities for students to gain career-related work experience in the basin. “I applied and got it,” said Read. “Now I’m hiring for a 35-week local student intern to help with marketing.”

While Canadian businesses at large have been fortunate to be on the receiving end of federal wage subsidy programs, small, entrepreneurial outfits such as Oneberrie sometimes don’t fit their criteria. “The support of FedEx and the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) have been huge for me because my business is at a phase where it can be difficult to receive more traditional support from the government,” said Read. Oneberrie seamstresses are in both Invermere and Pincher Creek, Alberta.

“It takes a tonne of stress off my shoulders, it keeps my seamstresses working, and lets me think about what I can do to grow my business here in Invermere. I feel so blessed to call this valley home,” said Read.

She believes emotion is the most powerful of the ‘four E’. “As your customers gain trust and are happy with a business’ products, others will become engaged and become interested in their products or services.

As their client base grows, they see satisfied customers commenting and creating positive emotions on their feeds.”

Each social media platform has a unique audience in aggregate. If you’re an Invermere real estate brokerage, does it make sense to be on TikTok? “It really depends on the type of business. I think a local contractor or realtor would have a tough time gaining growth [on TikTok] but if you are a ‘from-home-based-entrepreneur”’in the sales business such as fashion, make-up or any brand products ,then I would definitely suggest TikTok.

There are plenty of misconceptions about social media. Meadus is aware. “[It’s] because anyone can use it and the public is never fully informed what really happens with their content.” Nonetheless, she believes that with enough education (of which she is happy to share), and straight-forward strategies, she is capable of custom tailoring social media to your business needs.

“If you run a business no matter the service you offer you should be using at least two social media platforms to showcase your business and its story. Most companies use more and I say the more the better,” said Meadus.

What the world needs now

By Pastor Murray Wittke Valley Christian Assembly On June 16th, 1858, during a time of great political polarization Abraham Lincoln delivered his “House Divided” speech. In it, he echoed Jesus’ warning from centuries earlier “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.”

Three years later, the USA descended into a bloody Civil War that claimed 250,000 lives.

We live in a time of political and social upheaval. Everywhere folks are divided, angry and ready to fight. Everyday pitched battles are fought in the streets of cities around the world. Refugees flee warzones, nation rises against nation and old alliances collapse. It would be wise to remember Jesus’ warning.

Recently the words of an old song came to mind.

In 1965, as folks were divided and protesting over civil rights and the Vietnam War, Jackie DeShannon sang “What the World Needs Now is Love Sweet Love, it’s the only thing that there’s just too little of. What the world needs now is love, sweet love, no not just for some

but for everyone.”

I agree, we need more love, but I believe our current “US versus THEM” climate requires something stronger than sweet syrupy feelings and nicer people. We need a love that reaches beyond family and friends to those with a different political persuasion, religion, skin colour, language, nationality and sexual orientation. We need a love that transforms the way we see those folks, opens our heart and moves us toward rather than away from them. We need a love that enables us to be compassionate and caring for people we don’t really like, people who hate everything about us and try to make our life miserable. Love like that is rare and wonderful to see when it suddenly appears.

Last June, a Black man’s photo at a BLM protest in London carrying an injured far right counter-protester away from danger went viral. Patrick Hutchinson was a modern day Good Samaritan. He didn’t see an enemy; he saw a fellow human being in trouble, picked him up and carried him to safety. That’s how Jesus loves us, and that’s what the world needs now.

Ray Crook turned 102 on September 1st. Surrounded by friends, Ray thought it was going to be a typical ice-cream cake adorned evening celebration. Bob and Lisa Ede however, planned a surprise drive-by for Crook. Invermere District fire trucks and plenty of friends drove by honking their horns, smiling, waving and wishing Ray a happy birthday from out their vehicle’s windows. Ray waved back and smiled from the lawn of his Lakeview Manor Residence. It was a joyous occasion.
