media outlet has facilitated this awards competition, and again this year’s participation by readers was just outstanding, said Farquharson.

The awards are also about giving local business owners and operators a pat on the back and well deserved kudos for going above and beyond – not just once in a while, but all the time, Farquharson said.

“These are people who work hard day in and day out, not to receive an award but to be the type of business Langley readers are proud of, and want to continue going in and seeing day after day,” she said.

Woo Kim Langley Taekwondo in downtown Langley City was one of the finalists in five different categories for this year’s awards.

Head master Gary McLaughlin was over-the-moon learning his martial arts school had once again been shortlisted.

“We were quite surprised when we were told that… humbled, in fact,” said the multiple past Readers’ Choice award winner.

“Considering everything that’s going on right now, for everyone to take the time to go online and vote, it’s surprising and it means a lot,” McLaughlin added.

By voting in this year’s online Readers’ Choice Awards program, “it’s the community saying that we’ve done a good job, that we’re reputable, and that means a lot,” McLaughlin said.

Likewise, Jamie Schreder, co-founder and owner of Camp Beer Co., was please and a little shocked that his brand new craft brewery and tasting rom was in the running for such notable community accolades so early in its existence.

They first swung the doors open just before Christmas, then in March were forced – like most others – to close down due to COVID. “It’s been an exciting ride, so far,” Schreder said, for the

entire 16-member team at the 64th Avenue brewery.

Thankfully, people – now anxious to socialize safely – are gravitating to their large establishment, especially keen on visiting their large, partially heated and partially covered outdoor patio, he said.

Camp Beer Co. is a finalist in one of this year’s Readers’ Choice categories, and Schreder joked that he “we didn’t even have to bribe people with free beer,” to get shortlisted.

“I would have,” he added with a chuckle.

“No, honestly, we’ve had such incredible community support from the very start. And, it’s always nice to get that outside vote of confidence that you’re doing things right, so this really does mean a lot to the entire team.”

It was a pretty big honour and pleasant surprise for the crew at Blue Moon Plumbing & Heating, too.

It received a nomination for the first time this year.

Commercial accounts manager Christine Brightman said it means a lot to the 15-yearold Milner-based company and its team to be selected as one of Langley’s top plumbing companies.

“2020 has given us the opportunity to really slow down and concentrate on our customer service, and this nomination is a reflection of how important our customer relations are,” Brightman said.

“We have had the opportunity to serve other businesses, share success stories on social media, and give back to those who have supported our business for so many years,” she explained, saying the entire team (12 technicians and four office staff) are deserving of the accolades.
