Kaitlyn is around for positive reinforcement and will be the “eyes and ears” in public spaces. She will help address issues as they arise such as large congregations of users. She can also report infractions, risks to public health and safety and other issues to our bylaw officer or the RCMP. What can you do to help? When visiting district of Invermere public spaces, please share the space safely and respectfully. B.C.’s provincial health officer has recommended small outdoor gatherings are the safest way to socialize. If you choose to socialize outside in a public area, you must ensure you remain two metres from those who are outside your household or “social bubble.”

Be sure to keep your dog on a leash in all areas, other than approved off-leash parks. Consider a visit to our outdoor recreation spaces during less busy times like mornings and late evenings. Be sure to stay at home if you are feeling unwell, especially if you are experiencing cold or flu-like symptoms. Be sure to pack the essentials, such as hand sanitizer, and wash your hands often with soap and water where available.

Deer ‘hoofs’ woman

Invermere’s urban deer population is noticeably more aggressive this year, with increased calls on the issue to local conservation officers, and with one mule deer having ‘hoofed’ a woman and her dog near the Station Pub last week, injuring both the woman and the dog.

The ‘hoofing’ incident occurred on the morning of Thursday, July 2, and came a week or so after officials had placed a sign in the area warning of aggressive deer.

“She was walking near the Station Pub and her dog was off leash... that’s likely what provoked the deer,” Columbia Valley Wildsafe B.C. community coordinator Corinna Strauss told the Pioneer. She pointed out that although Invermere’s urban deer have lived within the district for years, they likely still instinctively view dogs as potential threats because in the wild canines are predators of deer.

The deer began ‘hoofing’ the dog, rearing up and striking the pet with its hooves. “The woman was able to get the deer off the dog, but then the deer also bruised and injured the woman,” said Strauss. “It is quite unusual for a deer to do that to a person. Normally even urban deer demonstrate a bit of fear of humans.”

But this year is anything but normal in terms of aggressive deer, and on top of that, late spring and early summer is a particularly sensitive time of year for deer. “This is when does are giving birth to fawns,” said Strauss. “So that amps up the aggression for the mule deer in town.”

Photo by Steve Hubrecht this time of year regarding aggressive deer, which is what prompted the warning sign to go up in the first place. The sign was placed near the Station Pub, quite close to where the woman and her dog were ‘hoofed.’

“This year there is definitely an increase in calls to the Conservation Officer Service compared with last year,” said Strauss. While she couldn’t say exactly how many calls there have been on the issue, she said it was dozens as opposed to hundreds. To prevent aggressive encounters with urban deer, Strauss recommends giving deer plenty of space and keeping your dog on a leash. She noted that urban deer have been known to stalk off-leash dogs in Invermere, something Strauss said can catch people off guard and be quite unnerving. If an incident occurs, Strauss said it’s best not to try to fight back, but instead try to get away.

The video was a collaboration between the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce, local businesses, residents and politicians.

“It’s been a bumpy round but we want you to know that we’ve missed you. Now that the coast is clear we’d love to have you here,” begins the song as enthusiastic dancers

rock their socially-distant moves.

The Chamber released the video with a statement that said: “this music video represents cooperation, resilience and a new day for our local community and our many visitors from all over the world.”

Council members from Radium – wearing jerseys for the Stampeders, Flames and Oilers – danced near Sinclair Canyon. Invermere council members participated too, as did skateboarders, Indigenous dancers, business folks and valley mascots from Super Berry to dancing slices of pizza – all joining together to welcome visitors back after months of COVID-19 travel restrictions.

RCMP Report Submitted by Corporal Louis-Philippe Gendron-Fafard Columbia Valley RCMP This past week, June 29 through July 5 the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 112 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.

On July 3, police received an abandoned 9-1-1 call. Police were able to get in touch with the caller who explained that they were stuck on Windermere Lake on tubes and had floated past the point where they were supposed to stop. As they were stranded on an island, police contacted the rental location where the tubes were obtained and assisted the stranded group. Everyone was later confirmed safe.

While conducting patrol in Canal Flats on July 3, one of our officers observed a male driving a red Pontiac Sunfire who was talking on his cell phone. A traffic stop was initiated on Quinn Street and identified the driver.

The police officer formed suspicion that the driver was driving with alcohol in his body and read him the ASD demand. The driver provided two breath samples, both “Fail.” A 90-day immediate roadside suspension was issued to the driver meaning that the driver would be unable to drive in British Columbia for the next 90 days.

The vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days. The officer issued a verbal warning for having open liquor in the vehicle and talking on his cell phone while driving.

On July 4, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of golf carts and ATVs driving around everywhere

in Windermere. The caller requested patrols of the area. Police attended and conducted patrols of Windermere, including the beaches, with limited results. According to several reports over the last few weeks, the use of unregistered vehicles without insurance has increased in the Windermere area. There will be increased patrols in the area to educate further the population of the area. If a vehicle without insurance is utilized on the road, a violation ticket could be issued for $598 plus the cost of the tow.

On July 4, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of people stranded on Lake Windermere near Kinsmen Beach in Invermere. The complainant reported that she and her friend were floating on the water and the wind was making it hard for them to paddle back. Police did not attend due to other ongoing calls, but confirmed that everyone made it back to land.

Over the last week, we received 17 abandoned 9-1-1 calls where the operator of the phone dialled by mistake or was unaware. Each of these calls takes a large amount of time to investigate and numerous resources are utilized for such calls. All of these calls were unfounded and wasted valuable resources.

If you dial 9-1-1 by mistake, stay on the line and answer the questions of the call taker. If you hang up, be attentive to call backs from the call taker or police, and provide your closet location as a police officer will sometimes need to confirm your well-being in person.

Lastly, please review the emergency SOS settings on your phone as some devices have contacted 9-1-1 while their users are boating on the lake.

Short-term rentals in Columbia Valley crunched by pandemic

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com The COVID-19 pandemic has battered shortterm rentals in the Columbia Valley every bit as viciously as it has hammered the more formal accommodation industry, but the last week or so has shown a few glimpses of things potentially starting to turn around.

“With COVID-19 it’s been literally no bookings at all ever since mid March, when it started,” said Jamie Archibald, who offers his condo in the Peaks in Radium out for short-term rental through Airbnb.

Archibald uses the condo first and foremost as a recreational second property, and occasionally rents it out to help subsidizes his condo fees.

Outdoor art workshops help valley cope with COVID-19

The Columbia Valley Arts Council and Black Star Studios are collaborating to host a series of free outdoor art workshops this summer as a sort of informal therapy to help the valley cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The series is entitled Community Healing Through Art and came about when Arts Council executive director Sami Wackerle, Black Star co-owner Natalie Ruby and Columbia Valley Community Foundation (CVCF) director Barbara Kloos sat down to brainstorm a few weeks ago. “We were chatting about what we could do to get the community outside and reconnecting with each other in a creative way,” Wackerle told the Pioneer. The answer the three hit on was outdoor art workshops, and the plan has come to fruition.

The first of the workshops (which will be held down

by Pynelogs) was earlier this week as the Pioneer went to press, on Wednesday, July 8, and involved people painting landscapes either on their own or in groups. “We’re calling it ‘group landscape.’ Everybody in the group, whether it’s one person, a couple or a family of four or more, will get canvases,” Ruby told the Pioneer, speaking a few days prior to the workshop. “They each paint their canvas, but the idea is that when they’re done they will put them together and it will form one big landscape.”

The second free outdoor workshop, on Friday, July 31, will see participants making their own garden gnomes.

The third and fourth workshops are slated for Wednesday, August 12 and Friday, August 28, but Ruby is keeping mum on the details of those ones for now. “It will be something creative, stay tuned,” she said. “We’ve (Black Star) wanted to do something like this for a long time.

We’re excited to work with Columbia Valley Arts to do it.”

“Arts give people the opportunity to express themselves. It gives them a chance to put the rest of their busy lives on pause and think about what really matters. And they get something creative out of it,” said Wackerle.

The series is being funding by the Columbia Basin Trust and the Columbia Valley Community Foundation.

Long-term rentals support locals Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically altered the accommodation situation for many local residents, and left more than a few of them scrambling to find a place to stay where they can appropriately follow pandemic guidelines on social distancing.

Copper Point Resort has been stepping in to help out by offering some of its condos for six-month rental periods, and the move has proved popular: within a few weeks all the units were full. The resort doesn’t normally offer long-term rentals, but was prompted to

“It was just to generate a bit of business and also to help out locals, because we had heard that people were really having trouble finding somewhere to live during the pandemic,” Copper Point front office manger Emily Carver told the Pioneer. “It didn’t take long to fill up. I would say that in less than two weeks they were all rented out.” The resort has rented out 16 condos for six-month terms, and already has many other wouldbe renters on a waiting list. Rising water usage

By Breanne Massey Local Journalism Initiative Reporter After the COVID-19 pandemic began impacting Canadians this spring, the Shuswap Indian Band (SIB) has reported an increase in wastewater usage in the Columbia Valley.

“We’ve seen a significant uptick in water use,” said Richard Haworth of Haworth Development Consulting.

“The (SIB) sells water to the Regional District of East Kootenay, which services the Holland Creek area, also known as Lakeview Meadows, which is serviced by the band. Most of the homes in the Holland Creek area are second homes to Albertans. It increased a lot earlier in the year. In March/April, we saw the consumption go up beyond what’s normal for that area.”

Haworth, who works in collaboration to provide overarching management services for the SIB and the daily operations provided to SIB members through Corix Utilities, indicated that the Kinbasket Water Sewer Company provides water to the Holland Creek area through the RDEK, Black Forest and commercial business located on Arrow Road such as Kicking Horse Coffee and Home Hardware.

However, Haworth explained that SIB homes are utilizing septic fields. Meanwhile others located in Black Forest are on sewer along with the commercial businesses on Arrow Road.

While there is currently no concern about the increasing wastewater usage, Haworth has been visiting the lagoons to monitor the situation with his team.

Opinions about opinions

Responsibility to become anti-racist Dear Editor,

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com This column is the only place in the paper where Pioneer staff opinions are allowed to appear.

The rest of the newspaper is for facts, for balanced stories sharing other people’s opinions, for submissions, and for your letters where you get to say pretty much whatever you want.

When it comes to your letters, my job is basically only to proofread them, make sure you included your name and then put your words into the paper.

In our June 25 issue we ran a letter titled “Albertans crucial for business” in which a retired business person claimed that without Albertans, “Invermere would only have a hamburger joint and a bunch of pickups doing loser laps around town.”

This letter caused a bit of a stir on the local Cheers and Jeers Facebook page (which is not affiliated with the Pioneer) and someone called out the Pioneer for choosing to run the letter.

Although I regret missing a couple of letters that I simply couldn’t fit into the paper during the peak of the COVID-19 flurry of letters for and against Albertan visitors, on the whole we don’t pick and choose which letters to run. (If that was a privilege I had, you can be certain that the “Migrant opposed to immigration” letter that ran on January 30 wouldn’t have made it onto the page.) Instead we strive to run all of your letters.

Recently MLA Doug Clovechok told me the media has been blowing the Alberta/B.C. conflict over COVID-19 travel recommendations out of proportion. While he wasn’t speaking about the Pioneer specifically, a glance through our past issues will show fair and considered coverage in all areas of the paper – save for the letters.

The letters are yours to do with as you will.

Sometimes you write lovely and thoughtful ones.

Sometimes you write rants. Sometimes I agree or disagree with your points, but when we’re putting the paper together my opinions about your letters are irrelevant. Letters are your opinions, not mine or the Pioneer’s.

Reflecting on Dauna Ditson’s article “Our insides are showing” (June 11), I have been paying attention to what is being revealed in my community, and within myself. (I am white Caucasian, and identify as she/her.)

A few years ago, I represented the Valley Voices community choir by singing O Canada at the opening of a regional district meeting. I took great care in what I wore, memorized the words, practiced the high notes, and got there on time. Upon arriving, I asked how long I was expected to stay.

The person who greeted me suggested that I could leave after I sang, but it might be nice if I stayed for the First Nations welcome. Much to my shame and embarrassment now, I did not. I left right away and went to a local establishment for coffee. In retrospect, the most memorable part of that day

not just about incidental cases, such as my story above. This is about a global community crisis that is being unveiled both within us and around us.

One question I have for the Pioneer is why only one faith tradition (Christianity) is currently represented in the Faith column of the paper. The Baha’i faith, Hinduism, Indigenous spirituality, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism are just a few of the rich variety of traditions present in the Columbia Valley. Surely we have so much to learn from one another in these times of uncertainty, change, and social transformation.

Clarification In the June 25 issue of the Columbia Valley Pioneer, we reported on the 100th anniversary of the old CPR lodge. A clarification is in order: Nancy Ballard, the last owner of the lodge building before it was donated to the district, moved to its current location and renovated, was not keen to knock down the old building.

She did not want the lodge destroyed and was in fact quite active in seeking out ways to preserve the building. Ballard would also like to add that many other people donated their time or money (or flooring, cranes, trucks and front-end loaders) to help move and renovate the CPR lodge.

Missing the Pioneer after moving Dear Editor: My husband and I moved further west in April to be closer to family. It was hard to say goodbye to a valley we loved and enjoyed for 26 years.

What I didn’t expect was how much I would miss the Pioneer. The paper in our new location leaves much to be desired. Yes, it is a free weekly paper like the Pioneer but the similarity ends there. In trying to become

acquainted with a new locale I had anticipated reading human interest stories, seeing what non-profits there are and what they are up to, contemplating what the ministers have to say and possibly features on history – all to help me understand and know how to fit into my new community.

Alas there are none to little of these things. Unbelievably, it is mostly real estate, vehicle and other ads. I repent of, on rare occasions, complaining as

others did that there was ‘nothing in the Pioneer’ this week. I didn’t understand what a superb and rare thing your publication is. And thank you for the online editions where I can keep up to speed with what’s happening back home. Warm regards to all your staff as you work hard to keep doing what you do best!

Windermere water quality advisory lifted Submitted by Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) It was a big day for the community of Windermere on Monday, June 29 as the water quality advisory has been officially lifted following the community’s connection to the East Side Water Service.

“This day has been over 15 years in the making and is the result of an incredible amount of work and commitment by so many: from the RDEK board and staff, to the members of our Utility Advisory Commissions, the community, the contractors and consultants, and the provincial and federal governments who provided funding,” said RDEK Area F director Susan Clovechok. “We also share this milestone with former Electoral Area F director Wendy Booth who worked tirelessly to see treated water in Windermere.”

The Windermere Water System has been under a water quality advisory since 2006 and efforts have been underway since then to implement a solution that would bring Windermere water into compliance with Interior Health’s drinking water objectives.

“From the first referendum in 2011 to the eventual purchase of Parr Utilities and the connection of Windermere to the East Side Water Service, this has been a highly complex project and is a good example of community collaboration and collective problem solving,” added Clovechok.

In 2015, a secondary reservoir was constructed to increase community capacity while work continued to find a long-term solution to bring potable water to the community.

In 2016, the RDEK board supported pursuing the purchase of Parr Utilities and its water treatment plant. Following extensive negotiations, a purchase agreement was reached, community referendums in October 2017 were successful and work began to connect Windermere to the water treatment plant.

The final connection was completed in early June and, following flushing of the lines and required testing, Interior Health approved the lifting of the water quality advisory.

Restaurants at the Prestige in Radium are “ready and eager to welcome patrons” Sponsored content It’s no doubt that two of the hardest hit industries by COVID-19 have been hotels and restaurants. Doors closing, staff laid off, and no customers meant that many in the hospitality industry have been forced to close permanently. However, two local restaurants are hoping that won’t need to be the case.

Conrad’s Kitchen and Grill, and Don Agave Cantina, are both located in the Prestige Radium Hot Springs Resort on Main Street. While the hotel was able to keep its door open throughout the pandemic – even while experiencing occupancy levels in the single digits – the restaurants were forced to close for nearly two months. Now re-opened and with a passion for great food and service that’s stronger than ever, owners Marisol Velazquez and Francisco Guzman say they’re ready and eager to welcome patrons back in.

“It was a long two months but we’re very excited to be back,” says Marisol, who adds: “It’s been wonderful seeing our regular guests come back in to say hi and order their favourite dishes.” She adds that they’ve got all the proper procedures in place to ensure social distancing and sanitization practices, and their patio is a great option for dining in. They are also happy to provide take-out and curbside pick-up.

Velazquez and Guzman moved to Radium Hot Springs from Mexico two years ago to start a new life with their two young daughters. Despite having left everything and everyone they ever knew back in their home country, they say they’ve been welcomed into the community with open arms and are loving the area. While the COVID-19 pandemic certainly didn’t make life any easier, they do feel that it’s given them a renewed appreciation for the business they love. But in order to keep their restaurants open for the long haul, they say they rely not only on patronage by hotel guests, but even more so from locals. That’s why they’ve extended their Local Discount Card program until December, which gives anyone living in the Radium area a 15 per cent savings on all

Submitted photo food orders until the end of October, and then a 25 per cent discount for the winter months. Anyone living in the valley area (Radium, Edgewater, Invermere, and Fairmont) is eligible to sign-up for the free card by stopping by the front desk at the hotel.

“We really rely on the locals to keep us going. Even if people ordered one or two meals a month, that would make such a difference to our family,” says Velazquez.

The restaurants are well-known for their Family Packs – larger portions of various items that can feed an entire family for a really reasonable cost. And because they’re of Mexican descent, their Mexican food is becoming the most popular items on the menu. They also specialize in burgers, pizzas, pastas and salads, and other classic dishes. “Give us a chance and try it,” she adds. “We are doing our best to make all our meals from scratch and with the best quality ingredients. We would like to invite everyone to come and visit us and try our food.” Conrad’s Kitchen and Grill, and Don Agave Cantina, are both open Monday to Saturday from 5 to 9 p.m.. Daily specials are available, and they’re also offering $5 draft beer and half price bottles of wine all summer.

Annual installation & removal of buoys – Columbia Lake The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is seeking expression of interest for annual installation (spring) and removal (fall) of eight (8) Vessel Operation Restriction Regulations Buoys (VORR) on Columbia Lake for a three year term. This posting is for a contractor to undertake the full scope of work as identified below and provide all necessary equipment, including a boat, required to undertake the work.

Submission of an EOI must be sent in by: 2:00 pm July 14, 2020 to Karen MacLeod, Planning Coordinator at kmacleod@rdek.bc.ca with the subject “Columbia Lake Buoys”.

ANNUAL SCOPE OF WORK (2020-2022): • Pick up/Drop off of the VORR buoys from the RDEK Windermere Office compound. The contractor shall be responsible for communicating with RDEK staff to coordinate the pick up / delivery of the buoys (spring and fall).

• Installation – Annual installation of the eight VORR buoys in the spring (July for 2020).

• Removal – Removal of the VORR buoys and securing a winter float on the mooring chain on an annual basis in the fall at the end of boating season.

ADDITIONAL 2020 SCOPE OF WORK SHALL INCLUDE: • Anchor Blocks –Transportation and installation of concrete anchor blocks (one per buoy), mooring chain and associated hardware. The anchor blocks shall be deposited on the bed of the lake at the GPS coordinates provided by the RDEK. Ktunaxa developer launches app

By Breanne Massey Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Christopher Horsethief has recently released a mobile application that focuses on revitalizing the critically endangered Ktunaxa language by placing an emphasis on the foundations of grammar.

The Ktunaxa Grammar App aims to aid language learners in grammar pattern recognition with scientific approaches rooted in Second Language Acquisition (SLA).

“Most of my contributions to Ktunaxa language materials in the last couple of years have come in the form of mobile apps, both for Android and iOS platforms,” Horsethief told the Pioneer. “Most recently, we tested and released an app that focuses on grammar. I drew heavily from SLA literature to craft a quiz game that uses scientifically proven methods to help learners recognize gaps in their linguistic repertoire. In other words, the app is designed to get people to realize when they are wrong, explore new linguistic forms and attempt to use the new forms in the app environment.”

Horsethief has also designed Ktunaxa apps, dating back to 2015, such as: KtunaxaFont, Ktunaxa Story “Kyukyit” and Ktunaxa “Slide Puzzle” to encourage culture and language acquisition for the community. However, the Ktunaxa Grammar App was his latest release and it’s geared toward building confidence in language

learners from an emotional perspective.

“Most beginner speakers that attempt to use the language get nervous and don’t focus on learning new forms. In many instances, you just feel disappointed for using the language incorrectly,” he explained. “This app actually tells you which part of the grammar you’re using properly, with the aim of helping you to feel more comfortable the next time you try.”

The process of SLA can be challenging for language learners, so Horsethief wanted to help the Ktunaxa Nation build confidence in language revitalization with a digital platform to encourage independent studies.

His goal was to create a safe space for language learners focused on SLA, while removing the emotional factors that deter some students during the learning process.

“Essentially, your phone will never make fun of you or laugh at your incorrect language,” said Horsethief. “In fact, now your phone will give you helpful hints, so you can explore new ways to use the Ktunaxa language.”

S OBITUARY S Alpine, Floyd Herman March 20, 1943 – July 4, 2020 With heavy hearts the family of Herman Alpine announce his passing.

After a lengthy battle Herman succumbed to his illness peacefully in his sleep on July 4th ,2020 in Trail, B.C. Herman was born on March 20, 1943, as Floyd Herman Alpine, the first-born child of Judith (nee Birdstone) and Noah Alpine.

Herman spent many years in Seattle, WA before coming home to Aqam in the early 90’s.

Panorama comes to town

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com Panorama Mountain Resort ventured down from the mountain and onto 7th Avenue in Invermere last month, where they opened the Panorama Mountain Centre for Adventure.

Craig Wilcock, the store’s retail manager, said: “The opportunity just presented itself ” and “the location couldn’t be better.”

The move into town wasn’t related to COVID-19, he said, adding that the resort had been “looking to have a bit more of a town presence for a number of years” and that the store allows the resort to be more connected to the wider community.

“It’s important for Panorama not to have that disconnect from town to the

resort. We’re all here together, so we just want to be here supporting the community the best we can.”

The store offers clothing and accessories and is selling passes for summer activities up at the resort that include sightseeing, mini-golf, gold mining and more.

The shop is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m..

“Currently we are a winter outlet,” he said. “We have ski apparel for men, women and children at substantially reduced prices. We have a great selection of ski accessories and we have a selection of spring/summer apparel and bike apparel all at discounted prices.”

Via email, Steve Paccagnan, the resort’s president and chief executive officer, said: “Thus far the location and response from community and guests has been really positive. Many are happy that they have a spot where they can not only get gear but also connect with our team on information about Panorama Resort.”

As for whether the store will continue operating in the long term, he said, “It’s a good start and we will see how the summer progresses. Stay tuned!”

Wilcock is keeping his fingers tightly crossed.

“I really like the opportunity of working in the community that I live in,” he said. “I really hope it stays open. I think it makes a lot of sense for the resort and for the community.”

CALL FOR ARTISTS SUBMISSIONS Shuswap Indian Band and District of Invermere DEADLINE: July 15, 2020 CALL FOR ARTISTS DESCRIPTION: Shuswap Indian Band and District of Invermere are in the process of creating a Friendship Agreement to formalize their commitment to each other, their partnership, and community members and citizens of both communities.

Purpose of a Friendship Agreement: • Provide the framework upon which the partners, including their respective governments and community members, will collaborate with one another; • Strengthen the partners mutual intentions to pursue a lasting friendship based on mutual respect, honour and recognition; • Develop mutual protocols and activities that engage transparent communications, trust, inclusion, belonging and community betterment; • Collaborate on community economic and social development Shared Vision: As neighbouring communities, we commit to share our wisdom to build a better future for our children and generations to follow; two communities committed to building a friendship by trusting, celebrating and respecting one another, our ancestors and our environment.

This is a call for artists to submit their interest and artwork to accompany the written aspect of this Friendship Agreement.

The Shuswap Indian Band and District of Invermere partnership Working Group will award a cash prize of $500 to the selected artist!

The selected art/image may or may not be replicated and/or displayed with the accompanying Friendship Agreement on a publicly displayed document, on District of Invermere or Shuswap Indian Band signs and online media (including websites and social media).

Water temperature remained consistent with last week’s data while water depth is continuing to increase.

Turbidity at the south sampling station was higher today which was potentially due to the large amount of floating pollen and debris.

Unfortunately we are still unable to take volunteers in the boat with us, however we hope this changes in the near future.

HOW TO APPLY ~ Artist requirements for the call: 1. Artists must submit an image for print media, this includes hand drawn or digitally created images and both colour and black and white submissions are welcome. The image should capture the spirit and intent of the Friendship Agreement and should illustrate connection between the communities.

2. Artists must own the copyright to their artwork submission. By submitting an application, the artist acknowledges that they created the artwork, are the rightful owner, and did not infringe on the rights of any third party in creating the artwork.

3. The winning artist may be invited to formally assign their copyright to the artwork to the Shuswap Indian Band and the District of Invermere, which assignment would provide the Shuswap Indian Band and the District of Invermere with all rights and copyright to use and reproduce the artwork. Such an assignment would occur only if the winning party was agreeable, and additional compensation (beyond the $500 cash prize) for the copyright assignment may be payable.

Entries must be submitted on or before July 15th, 2020.

I’m so grateful to have been introduced to the spiritual practice of “stepping into the present moment.” Most of the time, still, I’m not in the present moment.

I’m in my mind thinking, thinking, thinking. I try to figure life out. I’m thinking about something that has happened. I’m thinking about something that might happen. Thinking is just a default mode I go to without being aware of it.

It used to be, as a minister, I believed it was my job to give people lots to think about. It was a compliment when someone would say to me after a Sunday service “you always give me lots to think about.” It’s like I believed more thoughts would “save” us – would “save” me.

I wanted to be “thoughtful.” This seemed to work until I couldn’t shut my mind off. Something would bother me and I would lie in bed at night trying to solve “the problem.” Something that happened in the past would bother me and I would go over and over it. Something that might happen in the future would concern me and I would try to sort it out before it even happened.

I thought the problem was the content of what I was thinking about. It was hard for me to see that it was not

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com The sweet burn of Dave’s Hot Pepper Jelly is fading out. Local owners Dave and Kathy Sutherland are moving on to other ventures, leaving stockpiles of the popular jelly dwindling.

Dave made his pepper jelly for over 30 years. Before he and Kathy met and married, he was selling his product at a Christmas craft fair in Invermere.

“It paid for Christmas every year (pre-meeting me), and that’s all he cared about,” Kathy said.

Once one problem is “solved,” it is replaced by another problem. The problem isn’t what I am, or we are, thinking about, the problem is the thinking mind, which ties into thoughts like a dog ties into a bone.

To step into the present moment is to step out of the mind. It’s like stepping out of a dream into reality.

When we step into the present moment the first thing we come to is our senses – what we see, hear, feel, smell and taste. It’s like we wake up. Before we were absent, lost in thought; now we are present. This may seem simple, but it is a profound shift in consciousness. We may be stepping out of hundreds of years of programming and conditioning.

In the Bible, there is the parable of the prodigal son, which tells a story about a young man who wanted to find life “out there,” but he hurt people, and he came to a place of desolation after the things he thought would be life-giving weren’t. At some point in his suffering, the story says, he “came to his senses.” There was a shift in his consciousness. He began to make his way home, which, in the spiritual life, is a metaphor for connecting to the True Self – the self rooted in God, in Being.

It was like the young man woke up. Before, you could say, he was living the dream, but the dream was not abundant or full; it was a nightmare. When he stepped into the present moment, when he came to his senses, he found grace, which means the full gift of life and love was waiting for him and was always present.

The simple practice of stepping into the present moment is profound, transformative, and easy to overlook.

She had higher ambitions for his wares, suggested the jelly become a business and joined forces with him to make it happen. Over the years, demand grew until the jelly was available in over thirty retail locations and restaurants.

“We’ve reached heights as high as the restaurant at the top of the Banff gondola,” Kathy said. “We were hustling and grinding.”

They loved the business, the smell of jalapenos cooking, going to farmers’ markets, interacting with happy customers and raising their son, Jake, around the jelly, but eventually the 100-hour work weeks took their toll.

“I was diagnosed with lupus well over a year ago and it has really affected my health. Spending time with family is more important at this point and I’m enjoying being a recovering workaholic,” Kathy said.

“We wanted to enjoy our lives more.”

Dave is now roasting coffee for Stolen Church Coffee and working regular hours.

“He’s loving the Monday to Friday (schedule),” she said.

Kathy is working a little, writing a book and appreciating the extra time she can now spend with Dave and Jake. Even so, taking the family out of the family business was a tough choice.

“It’s hard for me. I call it bittersweet because it was our baby just like our son,” she said, adding that for her the business was made of memories like that of little Jake labelling jars when he was three years old.

Kathy hopes someone else will step in to fill them and has been in contact with a potential buyer from Alberta.

In the meantime customers will be able to keep buying Dave’s Hot Pepper Jelly until the shops run out of stock.

“We are eternally grateful for all the love and support over the years,” she said.
