Sweet spot: the Doukhobor jam-making enterprise

First of five parts etween 1908 and 1912, Doukhobors of the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood purchased 15,320 acres of land in the Kootenay-Boundary, where at least 5,724 members resettled from the Prairies.

Working communally, they rapidly cleared the undeveloped tracts, constructed villages and established fruit-growing orchards. By 1912, they had planted over 70,000 fruit trees — apples, pears, plums and cherries along with tremendous quantities of small fruits — grapes, strawberries, raspberries and currants.

More land purchases, settlers and orchards would follow.

While a portion of the fruit was grown for the domestic use of CCUB families, the surplus was grown for commercial sale. It soon became apparent, however, that the local market for fresh fruit was extremely limited. It became necessary to find a means to preserve the highly-perishable fruit so that it could be transported and sold beyond the British Columbia Interior, where

a large market existed.

The secondary manufacturing of produce would also lead to a higher value product than the fruit could bring in its natural state. To this end, the CCUB embarked on a large-scale canning and preserving enterprise.

This series examines that enterprise — the Kootenay-Columbia Preserving Works — its corporate, operational and product history between 1911 and 1938.

Founding and organization The Kootenay-Columbia Preserving Works was founded in April 1911 as an unincorporated subsidiary of the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood. Its purpose was the preserving and canning of produce communally grown by the CCUB and the packaging, distribution and sale of the resulting products. Its name reflected the source of its produce ingredients: the Kootenay and Columbia River valleys where the CCUB fruit orchards and berry farms were located.

Produce and ingredients The produce ingredients used by the Kootenay-Columbia

Preserving Works were principally sourced from the CCUB orchards and farms at Brilliant, Ootischenia, Lugovoye (Pass Creek), Plodorodnoye (Glade), Prekrasnoye (Shoreacres) and the Slocan Valley. After 1921, rail shipments of fruit from the company packing house at Fruktova (Grand Forks) in the Boundary were also used.

Fruit was purchased from the CCUB for cash at local rates.

From the outset, the company was capable of processing a substantially larger quantity of produce than the CCUB properties could supply. It therefore became necessary to purchase fruit and berries from other Kootenay growers as distant as the West Arm of Kootenay Lake, Creston and the Arrow Lakes.

This was a welcome economic stimulus for local farmers and ranchers, who were often unable to find a market for their excess produce at any price.

Throughout the growing season, from April to September, the Kootenay-Columbia Preserving Works publicly advertised and solicited local farmers to purchase their fruit and berries.

It frequently entered into three to five-year contracts to buy and pick their produce (with its own pickers, primarily Doukhobor women and children) for use in its factory, and paid a higher price than local growers could secure if they hired their own labour for picking, which was often in short supply during the picking season.

For instance, during the 1911 to 1913 period, when the local price of strawberries was 5½ cents per pound picked, the company offered six cents per pound for standing crops; or in other words, the equiv-

alent of approximately seven to 7½ cents per pound with picking costs taken into account. It also offered to pay the freight to the factory, which was the equivalent of approximately eight cents per pound. The local price of fruit remained relatively stable over the years; in 1931, the company still paid six cents per pound of strawberries.

Occasionally, the amount of produce obtainable in the Kootenay was insufficient and the Kootenay-Columbia Preserving Works purchased whole crops from growers as distant as Penticton in the Okanagan district and Mission and Hatzic in the central Fraser Valley as well as Puyallup in Pierce County, Wash.

During the picking season, the company had thousands of fruit pails continually in transit between its factory and local ranches.

Streams of wagons (by the ‘30s, trucks) laden with wooden buckets of freshly-picked fruit and berries, each weighing 16 to 18 pounds, arrived at the packing houses, where the produce was received, unloaded, weighed at the scales, strictly graded and briefly stored for processing. Other shipments from more distant points were received at the packing house via rail or river boat.

Granulated cane sugar, used in the jam-making and fruit-canning process, was purchased wholesale by the railcar load from the BC Sugar Refinery in Vancouver. Each carload contained 20,000 to 24,000 pounds of bagged sugar. The 100-pound sacks were unpacked and weighed at the packing house scales before being stacked in the warehouse for later use.

Nellie McClung recounted Kootenay visit in 1937 book

In 1937, prominent suffragette Nellie McClung visited Nelson. It’s not clear what led to her trip, or what her itinerary consisted of, but she wrote about it in her book More Leaves from Lantern Lane, a collection of her newspaper columns, published later that year (one of 18 books she wrote).

Then a Victoria resident, she recorded observations about snow conditions, the lack of a bridge across Kootenay Lake, the newly-built Civic Centre and its theatre, opposition to funding Kootenay Lake Hospital through a lottery, Nelson’s first mayor, and the success of the Kimberley Dynamiters at the World Hockey Championship in Europe.

Below is an excerpt from the chapter entitled Winter in the Kootenay, originally published in the Vancouver Province, Ottawa Citizen, and Victoria Daily Times of March 20, 1937, with annotations in italics. The entire book is available online through Project Gutenberg Canada.

The snow piled high beside the track, and sitting on the tree stumps like a drum-major’s cap, has in it the charm of abundance. At the Coast no one has a good word for the snow.

It is a menace there, a disturbance and a pest, and there is certainly no beauty in its ugly, bedraggled, dirty face as it lies on the streets of Vancouver.

No one ever wrote an ode to a snowflake there.

But here in the Kootenay country, the snow is white and powdery. It covers the ground

(The Normal School, i.e. teachers’ college, never opened, but Nelson is home today to the West Kootenay Teacher Education Program.)

Nelson has a new Civic Centre, which lifts it out of the small-town class. The Civic Centre has an auditorium, which seats 900 people; badminton and basketball courts, containing 8,400 square feet, a curling rink and skating rink, with great showers and dressing rooms, club rooms and kitchen equipment sufficient to feed an army.

The Civic Centre has artistic features, too. The walls in the corridor of the theatre are covered with squares of wood veneer — (a home product) the grain of the wood running vertically and horizontally in alternate squares, making a striking checkerboard of the walls.

I asked them how this great

project was being paid for, and given the information that two by-laws had been floated to cover the $250,000 cost. Nelson owns its own utilities and always has a balance on the right side of the ledger. This year the profit is over $100,000.

The late mayor, who held firm to the principle of city ownership of all utilities, had a rough time of it, receiving the censure of his fellow-citizens.

But now his name is honored, and a drinking fountain in the square bears testimony to his statesmanship.

(She’s referring to John Houston, who died in 1910, and whose monument on Vernon Street was unveiled in 1914. It’s still there, although now missing its fountain.)

The question of how to maintain the hospitals is much in the public mind and it is strange to note that this highly fortunate city in excellent financial standing is considering a huge sweepstake scheme for the care of their sick. Out of every 50 cents contributed only 10 cents would go to the hospital, but the friends and advocates of the scheme are not worried about that. Public opinion is sharply divided on this question, and the newspapers are full of letters up and down the country.

The Bishop of Kootenay has declared himself against the scheme, in a strong letter in which he deals with the arguments with a cool logic that should but will not clear the air. The chance of something for nothing never loses its appeal. People crave the privilege of having a golden dream, which lights all the lamps of hope and desire. They know the chances are small but they like the dream.

Great Britain tried raising money by lotteries, urged on

by these same arguments of keeping the money at home, but the scheme was abolished because the results were evil.

Gambling is always an evil, no matter how carefully it is disguised under the name of charity. The law recognizes this, and has declared against it, with one qualification (which should make us all ashamed) “except for church or charitable purposes.”

The winter sports in the Kootenay country absorb the people. Such activity I have never seen before. The children hurry home from school for their skates, or skis and are gone until darkness halts the game. The women play badminton, or curl, or both. The skating is a delight and joy to the eye. No one is too young or too old to cut scrolls on the ice.

The victories of the Kimberley Dynamiters in Europe is a personal triumph to all the population of the Kootenay, and I was asked very pointedly if the CBC was making plans to broadcast the final games.

(McClung was on the CBC board of governors.)

I was in Kimberley the night the Dynamiters defeated France 13-1 and the people were very composed about it.

They expect success now, and no wonder, for in all the European games the Dynamiters have not been defeated and only once have been tied.

(That game against France was played on Feb. 23, 1937.

The Dynamiters won the World Championship four days later.)

The sponsors of the Dynamiters evidently believe that the appearance of these young men is good advertising for Canada and no doubt they are more effective than posters or literature. They are the living demonstration of a young and virile country.

Student ambassadors provide insight for peers and public SUBMITTED

In the uncertain times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, students at Selkirk College are leaning on each other for valued support.

Expectations have been significantly altered as those studying at the post-secondary level cope with the new reality thrust upon them in the last few weeks. Coursework and delivery methods have been redefined, summer job opportunities have disappeared, living arrangements are uncertain, and financial stress is at an all-time high.

The student ambassador program is a student-led Selkirk College group that promotes health and wellness, inclusivity and connection, and support for students. As the entire student body deals with COVID-19 anxiety and stress, peer mentors are able to provide valuable insight into the current reality.

“There will be challenges throughout our lives and this is a big one,” says Adrian Moyls, a first-year student in the social service worker program who is a member of the student ambassador team. “Using this as a piece to develop and conquer challenges will make us stronger when we get out of this particular moment in time.

It’s not easy, but life is never easy. It shouldn’t deter students from getting their work done or taking on the challenges before us.”

Some students are unable to find alternative arrangements and Selkirk College continues to provide an on-campus student housing option for those unable to move out. The majority of those still living on-campus are from out-of-province or international students.

“Staying at student housing, you face a lot of social and emotional challenges,” says Rahul Lohani, a first-year student in the post graduate business management program who arrived last year from New Delhi and continues to live at Castlegar campus housing.

“My friends have moved out and I am a long way from my family. On top of that, you have academics and it gets harder to make the transition for many people like me. I enjoy attending classes and it has been difficult to adapt.”

To help their peers cope with the challenges, the Student Ambassador team has been volunteering their time over the last few weeks in several capacities. One of the initiatives is a weekly video call to provide students with more connection.

The calls cover different topics aimed a providing an outlet to converse and gather information. On Thursdays between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., students join the Zoom session to focus on financial aid, food supports, battling boredom and meeting new friends.

“Both as a college and the world, we are tackling something together and learning to support each other,” says Claire Hewson, Selkirk College’s campus life co-ordinator who works with the student ambassador group throughout the year. “If you go into the spiral of feeling out-of-control, it’s not healthy. We all want control and that is natural, so we need to focus on what we can control.”

In a time when connection is more vital than ever, student ambassadors are taking a leadership role in helping peers overcome the challenges of COVID-19.

“Right now is simultaneously a terrifying change but an exciting new opportunity,” says Will Parnell, a student ambassador and second-year rural pre-medicine program student. “I try to be optimistic about it. I tell my peers to think about all the wonders that are available to us now. We need to use this opportunity to do the things that maybe we couldn’t do before.”

Osprey Foundation launches Better Together fund SUBMITTED

Nelson’s Osprey Community Foundation is launching Better Together: COVID Community Response Fund to help local charities “Co-ordinating a fundraising effort on behalf of our local charities just makes sense and we’re launching the fund with an initial $15,000,” says Tina Choi, executive director of the foundation.

The fund will provide one place for philanthropists, community leaders, corporations and individuals to contribute and support organizations as they work to respond, recover and rebuild from the pandemic.

“We’re harnessing the collective desire of our community to give support where it’s needed most at any given time during this crisis,” Choie says.

As Osprey board chair Norm McCarvell notes, “This is a challenging time for everyone. Low income families are likely now ‘no income’ families, mental health issues are being exacerbated, charities that have had to cancel fundraising events and income generating programs are now facing critical budget deficits.”

“We also know that recovery will extend for months beyond this first

response phase. Over the next few months, we will continue to learn more about local needs and monitor the changing nature of the situation to assess how we can best support our community’s long-term resiliency.”

As McCarvell explains, “The community foundation mandate is to connect donors who care with the needs in the community, and right now the need is high. While we are best known for our endowment fund model, we are also providing options for donors to make an immediate impact through this new non-endowed response fund.

Gifts of any size will make a difference.”

Health and safety remains top priority, SD8 says SUBMITTED

During these unprecedented times, Kootenay Lake School District continues to ensure the health and safety of its students, families and staff remains a top priority.

A selection of recommended resources and supports dedicated to COVID-19 has been compiled and is now available on the district website: http://sd8.bc.ca/covid19. Topics include mental health and wellness, conflict management, self-care and digital parenting.

Parenting during COVID19 can be challenging with the changes to home, school and work life. Both parents

and children may be feeling worried and overwhelmed.

Initial sites opened April 6, prioritizing frontline medical and healthcare workers. The district has now expanded this service to include in-

school services during school hours for an expanded list of all essential workers including (hospital employees, medical services, pharmacists, law enforcement, fire services, paramedics, licensed daycare providers, social service workers, and childcare workers.)

On Monday, in-school services for all essential service workers began at all elementary schools in the district.

Kootenay Lake School District has also opened this service to parents and caregivers of students with unique needs as well as low income families with no other childcare options. Families are encouraged to contact their school principal directly.

Colouring book to support Nelson Community Food Centre SUBMITTED

A colouring book featuring West Kootenay landscapes is being published to benefit the Nelson Community Food Centre.

Kootenay Colouring will contain 18 colouring pages, including popular landscapes like Idaho Peak, Monica Meadows, and Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park.

This project is made possible with the support of Nelson’s Hall Printing and Cowan’s Office Supplies. The book will retail for $20 and all proceeds will be donated to the Nelson Community Food Centre.

Nelson artist Abby Wilson is creating the artwork based on

her favourite spots for hiking and painting.

“Colouring is a good indoor activity that helps many people relax and be mindful,” says Wilson. “This project started when I created a bunch of free colouring sheets for people staying inside. I’ve been blown away by the positive response so now I’m creating an entire book. There are lots of trail and park closures right now due to COVID-19, so here is a way to safely enjoy our West Kootenay landscapes and support a great cause!”

Andrew Creighton, from the Nelson Community Food Centre, adds: “We are very thankful for Abby’s initiative. It’s a

shining example of the overwhelming community support we’ve seen lately. The book looks great—what a worthwhile way to spend your time.

And, if you need food, come and see us Wednesday afternoons. Everyone is welcome.”

Last week marked National Advance Care Planning Day, a day to promote conversations about your wishes and values for your future health care.

Now, in this time of COVID more than ever, it is time to consider how you can begin

your own advance care plan.

Advance care planning involves talking with others about your wishes for your future health care and deciding who speaks on your behalf if you cannot. A national survey of 2,948 Canadians, 18 or older, commissioned by the BC Centre for Palliative

Care’s SpeakUp Campaign and conducted by Nanos Research, shows that although most people in Canada believe it is important to do advance care planning, only one in five people actually have a plan.
