VALLEY NEWS ‘Stay home, not at your second home’ say government officials

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com Last week, on April 9th, Emergency Management BC issued a release saying that roads are open but they should be used for essential reasons, which don’t include heading out for fun.

“This is not the time to travel to secondary homes or vacation properties in other communities. It’s not only important stay home and maintain physical distancing, but access to resources and health care may be more challenging in smaller communities if someone should become ill or if there’s a community outbreak. By staying home, British Columbians can take pressure off the already strained resources in these smaller areas,” the Provincial release said.

The release echoed comments Invermere Mayor Al Miller made in a statement earlier in the week about COVID-19 and the need to stay home.

“One of the biggest contributors to spreading this disease is travel and congregating together. I have personally been on several radio and television stations in both B.C. and Alberta asking for the visitors and second home owners to please stay where they are,” he said. “We absolutely hate having to say this because we all know that the tourism and second home owners bring not only great economics to the Columbia Valley, but many also bring their volunteer spirit with them and help out in so many ways. And in many ways several of them have

become very good friends and neighbours. The problem is our infrastructure will not handle a surge in the virus if the pandemic grows in our area.”

Some people have been displeased about being asked to stay away.

Joe Campbell, who lives in Calgary and normally spends around five months a year in Windermere, reached out to the Pioneer to say: “I was disappointed to learn that neither we nor our contributions to the economic welfare of Invermere are wanted this year for fear of spreading COVID-19 and overwhelming your medical system. I wish to point out that most of us Calgarians who walk on our hind legs have learned the art of social distancing, wearing masks and latex gloves and only leaving our residence to shop for groceries or medicine ... If any of us suspect we are getting the virus, it is highly likely that we will return to our primary homes where we have access to more comfort and medical services.”

John Owen, of Calgary and Fairmont, is in the valley with his family and is “troubled” to hear that government officials are asking people to stay home. He would be inclined to go back to the big city if he got sick.

“If I became ill I would want to be cared for in Calgary where the care would be more specialized and appropriate,” he said in a letter to the Pioneer.

It’s an argument mayor Miller has grown used to hearing, but he’s not buying it.

Resort asks people to stay off hill

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt Columbia Valley residents’ lives, and with search and rescue organizations throughout the province (including here) pleading with people to stay out of the backcountry, there has been a noticeable uptick in valley locals heading up to Panorama Mountain Resort for some frontcountry ski touring. This has resulted in at least one incident, which in turn has prompted the resort to ask people – in a letter sent out to season pass holders and others connected to the resort, and in a statement from resort chief exec-

utive officer Steve Paccagnan – to please stop.

The letter outlines that the resort was closed to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in the area, and that this means no public access of any kind is permitted to the ski terrain.

“Unfortunately, over the past two weeks we have seen a number of people irresponsibly disregarding this closure and hiking-up/skiing and snowmobiling on the slopes. This is extremely dangerous and we have already seen a serious incident,” reads the letter.

“Please respect the mountain closure, it is to keep you safe and no turn is worth injury or worse, someone’s life.” The letter later notes that Panorama’s Continued on page 5 …

ed to a two vehicle collision on Highway 93/95 and Swansea Road in Windermere.

The driver of a white GMC pickup was stopped on the highway waiting to make a left turn onto Swansea Road when the driver of a red Dodge pickup struck the truck from behind and drove into the ditch. None of the occupants were injured. The driver of the Dodge pickup was issued a violation ticket for driving without consideration.

On Thursday, April 9 at 7 p.m. police received a report of an intoxicated male throwing things around a residence on Kootenay Number 3 Road in Windermere. Police officers attended and arrested the male for mischief and held him in cells until he was sober.

This past week, April 6 through April 12, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 56 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.

On Monday, April 6 at 5 p.m. police received a report of an intoxicated male on Subdivision Road in Windermere.

Police attended the area and located an intoxicated adult male who was not able to stand or walk on his own. The male was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and held in cells until sober.

On Tuesday, April 7 at about 9 p.m. Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a suspicious male in a parking garage in the 4800 block of Stanley Street in Radium Hot Springs. The male attempted to take a car seat out of a vehicle but was scared off by the owner of the vehicle. At 10:30 p.m. police received a complaint of a suspicious male with a similar description at a business on West Main Street in Radium Hot Springs. The male was described as Caucasian male, approximately 25 years old, 5’10” with a slim build wearing a black hoodie and jeans. Police conducted extensive patrols but were not able to locate the male.

On Thursday, April 9 a black Samsung cell phone was found in Windermere and turned into the Columbia Valley RCMP. On Thursday, April 9 an abandoned vehicle was reported near Copper Road in Windermere. An officer attended and located a black Jeep Rubicon which was confirmed to be a stolen vehicle out of Invermere on February 27, 2020. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP or Crimestoppers.

On Thursday, April 9 at about 4:45 p.m. police respond- Crocus time – Breanna Murray found a spring crocus at Lake Enid over the long weekend.

The message was re-emphasized in a statement Paccagnan gave to the Pioneer several days later. “This is a very difficult time for everyone in our community as we face the realities of the COVID-19 crisis. Firstly, our thoughts and well wishes go out to all of our valued resorts guests everywhere. Panorama Mountain Resort made the difficult but right decision to close early for the winter season in an effort to do our part and support efforts in flattening the curve. The impacts on our people, business and local community are enormous. Understandably we all share a huge passion for the mountains and being outdoors especially knowing this spring would have

been fantastic skiing,” said Paccagnan in the statement.

“I get it, many want to get outside and into the mountains but unfortunately we have seen many people up tracking and skiing on the closed trails.

Additionally, there have been several people entering the closed ski terrain on snowmobiles, this presents a very serious risk of collision or accidents. We ask that everyone please respect the closure of the ski terrain and controlled recreation area as Panorama Mountain Resort has a duty of care under our master development agreement to manage and mitigate risks, keep people safe and the terrain closed. Having staff respond to potential accidents, rescues and providing emergency care will simply put more strain on our medical community. We have a great resort and look forward to seeing everyone again once we are past this crisis,” he concluded.

But if you chat with the health care professionals, as we do, not all cases affect people the same. You can go from a symptom to ICU in a matter of a very short time in many cases. And that would be problematic for our small hospital. Health units across the world are saying ‘stay home.’

And we had better listen so that we can get through this as soon as possible,” he said.

Gord Forbes, who “reside(s) slightly more often in Alberta” and has a second home in B.C. encourages his neighbours on both sides of the border to be respectful.

“Don’t let this COVID crisis bring out the worst of our sometimes failing human characteristics,” he said in a letter to the Pioneer. “I read the commentary

Mayor Miller made urging particularly Albertans to refrain from unnecessary travel to the valley, and his rationale is irrefutable.”

Speaking of negative human characteristics, Owen has been noticing rising hostilities in the valley and wants them to come to an end.

“I have friends here who have had a number of altercations with ‘locals’ over this very issue. Leaders ‘begging’ those with second homes to stay away is only going to make these confrontations more likely,” he said. “This is an awful situation for everyone. Let’s not make it worse by pitting neighbour against neighbour.”

The Pioneer also received a message from another visitor worried about the “venom” being spewed between residents and part-timers.

As tensions rise, Provincial heath officer Bonnie Henry continues asking everyone to be calm, to be safe and to be kind.

While the transfer stations and landfills are remaining open there may be short delays at our staffed facilities as we work to control the number of vehicles on site to promote physical distancing of 2m (6 ft).

As a safety precaution for the staff and public at all RDEK transfer stations and landfills, the transfer stations and landfills will be moving to a cashless system. They will continue to accept credit card and debit payments. This will be in place while we as a community rally together to slow the spread of COVID-19.

When we as a community work together to make these short term sacrifices, we will all be better off in the long run.

On the lighter side

Historical Lens

By Pioneer columnist Arnold Malone Special to the Pioneer These are heavy times. I listen to the morning news for about an hour and then watch the late night news in the evening. In between I listen to music or silently make things in my wood shop. Sometimes I get out for a brisk walk. Distracting yourself from this anxious time is good medicine.

Survival is, as much as anything, a matter of attitude. We need to know that the world will again get better. Humans have been in the depth of the valley many times before and still climbed back into the sunshine. My parents lived through two world wars and a Great Depression. So, if we now stay apart, we will again come together.

So, this article is not about heavy stuff. Everyone who has ever had a job has been witness to some funny stories. Get ready to write yours. We will need them.

While working as a provincial supervisor of the Alberta 4-H Clubs movement I was once attending a field crops Achievement Day in the Peace River region of Alberta. In part, we were testing the 4-H members on plant identification and their knowledge about field sprays.

The members were lined up at a long table where specimens of field crops and weeds were pressed on plastic sheets. Each member had a moment for identification and was then to move to the next specimen. At one point the line did not move when requested. I went to the boy at the front of the line and asked, “Are you having a concern?” He responded, “I know the name of this plant and I can say a name very close but I know it is not correct.” I told him to put down the name that was similar and if I thought he was close I would give him full marks.

The plant he was looking at was a clover, Birdsfoot Trefoil. When the group handed in their exam sheets I set his aside and looked up the relevant question. He had written Crows foot Tin Foil. He got full marks.

On that same day a 10-year-old member – the minimum age to join 4-H – was responding to a question of, what sprays would you use on wheat and what spray would you use with oats. The answer, in that time long ago, was 2-4-D in wheat and MCP in oats. The 10 year olds’ answer was, 2-4-D in wheat and TNT in oats. No doubt the dynamite was intended for the bigger weeds.

On another occasion I was asked to be the quest speaker at an awards banquet at Tomahawk, Alberta located west of Edmonton. I was seated at the head table along with eight others. A young boy was sitting beside me.

His anxiety meter was in the red zone. I tried to engage him in conversation but got either no response or a one-word answer.

“How old are you?” I asked. He whispered, “10.”

During the banquet I was trying to bring comfort to this nervous boy.

Finally I left him alone. I was certain that I was making him increasingly anxious.

Then a boy, about seventeen years old, who was doing a splendid job of chairing the banquet, announced, “I now call upon Johnnie Doe to introduce our guest speaker.”

To my surprise the terrified boy sitting beside me rose from his chair and went to the microphone and with a fairly crisp voice said, “We will now have a speech from Arnold Malone.” Then in a loud voice while leaning close to the microphone he shouted, “Is he here?”

The audience offered the wrong response. The room filled with laughter.

Love and fear Dear Editor, In life, there are two basic energies at work within all life forms whether they are tiny, like the cells of our bodies, or of larger form such as animals, trees, and ourselves. These energies are love and fear. I am sure you all are familiar with them but maybe how they are used could help you understand how they actually work for you.

In truth, one of these two energies is life giving and life enhancing. The other is just the opposite in its effect. The first is love of course, and the other is fear. Also, in truth, love and fear are not opposites. Fear enters where love is denied or not utilized for whatever reason.

Now, we are, as spiritual human beings, natural creators. Not everyone knows however that we create within our minds, or our consciousness. How we create is a process where what we give our attention to, as thoughts, or ideas, ideals, visions, and especially imagination, also gives life to our experience of life, either in our bodies, and our environment, but mostly in our subconscious creative mind.

What also occurs simultaneously is that the thoughts, ideals, and imaginings are given corresponding natural energies. For example: we all have experienced both fearful and loving thoughts, yes? When we give focused and/or prolonged attention to these imaginings, the normal high frequency of vibration of the idea is lowered to a much slower frequency of vibration.

If the fearful or loving thought is maintained then a manifestation in form will be presented to us in our experience. It will become real, or realized, in our reality.

Some people think you can have healthy fears but in truth all fear serves to make us victims of that which we fear. Love on the other hand needs to be awakened, engaged, and used within ourselves, our heart center, and that actually becomes our personal power, for if you are a loving individual, especially unconditionally loving, you will have no enemies, for all life, no matter what form, must reflect the vibrational energies we all emit in our daily activities, essentially, all the time.

Where there is love, there cannot be fear, or victimhood, or even any form of unhappiness or dis-ease. Life is meant to be good! And whether you believe it or not, all life is divinely and perfectly orchestrated and maintained with divine laws, but that is another feature to bring to light.

Know the truth and the truth shall make you free! Mark my words, rather, Jesus’ words.

Canfor announces COVID-19 reductions Submitted by Canfor Corporation Canfor Corporation (TSX:CFP) is undertaking additional temporary reductions in production capacity due to the impact of COVID-19 on the price of lumber and demand. “Canfor is experiencing a significant decrease in customer demand due to the global impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in the difficult decision to take additional downtime in Canada. Our top priority continues to be supporting our employees through this challenging time. We are encouraged by the financial relief programs the provincial and federal governments are implementing to support all impacted workers,” said Canfor Corporation President and CEO Don Kayne. The following changes to Canfor’s operating schedule are in addition to the capacity reductions announced on March 26.

Canfor does not anticipate announcing further operating adjustments before releasing the Company’s first quarter results. We will continue to assess operating rates on a weekly basis and will adjust as needed in response to the rapidly evolving market conditions, changes in customer demand and the global COVID-19 response.

Canadian Operations Effective April 13, Canadian lumber production will be curtailed by approximately 100 million board feet through to May 1, resulting in a total production run rate of approximately 30%. These reductions will be achieved by taking downtime at the majority of our British Columbia sawmills.

US and European Operations As previously announced, our Canfor Southern Pine and Swedish facilities will continue to operate at less than full capacity with variable operating schedules and downtime, which will be adjusted to align production with market demand as required. These reduced operating rates are expected to remain in effect through May 1.

As the global impacts of COVID-19 continue to evolve, there is the potential that further adjustments to operating plans may be required.

Elected officials comment The Pioneer asked Radium Mayor Clara Reinhardt and Area G director Gerry Wilkie for their comments following Canfor’s earlier announcement on March 26.

At the time Reinhardt said: “Of course this kind of news is always disappointing for the employees, the community and the employer, but given what is going on in the world, the news is not totally unexpected. The environment for the lumber industry has been challenging for a long time and the markets are now slowing down to almost none.” Wilkie said: “Given the effects of the pandemic, the mill shutdown is not surprising. Canfor is the largest corporate employer in the valley, and I trust they will be doing their part to help their employees and contractors get through this tough time. Many other local businesses have closed and there will be difficult socio-economic times ahead. What will help to carry us through this is looking out for each other in our neighbourhoods and communities.”

Alone together 3: the mayor at home

Al and Lucy Miller: Keeping busy as a family has not been hard. It’s only Lucy and myself at home now and we both have things to keep busy with. Lucy enjoys crocheting, knitting and reading in her spare time. But during this COVID-19 time she has been reaching out to many people by phone or Messenger or email to make sure everyone is doing okay. We also enjoy playing card or board games with each other. We purchased a couple great games from Main Street Fun and Games. Dee sold us the games and social distanced throughout the whole transaction. Now if I could only win a little more often at those games it would be even better! Getting outside is not an issue. We have a dog that keeps me walking and looking at all the things that I need to be doing in our yard.

Being Mayor during these times has been very interesting and busy. I have been spending a lot of time with the media encouraging citizens and visitors to do the right thing for public safety and stay at home and practice physical distancing. I have had many conversations with people in this regard. Not all folks are as understanding at to why they should stay in place, wherever that might be. All of our meetings have become virtual meetings, which has also been a learning experience. I know I still would rather sit around a table and discuss and debate rather than in front of a computer. Hospital chief of staff reaffirms the need to remain vigilant and discusses new developments in antibody testing Submitted by Dr. Gareth Mannheimer, Chief of Staff of Invermere & District Hospital and local family physician Thank you for acting responsibly over the Easter weekend by staying smart and staying apart. Your commitment to social and physical distancing as well as complying with provincial guidelines and recommendations during this COVID-19 pandemic is making a huge difference. We are playing our part in flattening the curve and gaining traction. On behalf of your medical providers, we appreciate your efforts.

Our region has continued to do very well over the past week. All our locals diagnosed with COVID-19 continue to do very well. It is important to stress again that this virus remains a significant threat, and I continue to urge everyone to stay focused in the weeks ahead.

Vigilance remains top of mind • I recognize our new reality is getting more and more frustrating. Many of us are struggling. Now, more than ever, is the time to stay calm and play it safe. This virus is novel. This means there is not a single person among us who has immunity. Even if you think you are fit, and unlikely to struggle with the symptoms, I would ask you to consider the frail and vulnerable. We are learning asymptomatic people (those with mild or no reported symptoms) are still contagious and capable of spreading the virus. Plus, the virus has a long incubation period with people not showing symptoms for an average of five days after infection. Together, these factors result in many people who are infected spreading the virus without even knowing it.

• Please, stay home if you can. If you must go out, maintain a physical distance of at least two metres (6.5 feet) from other people whenever you can. Please continue to wash your hands diligently. If you are symptomatic, self-isolate, use the provincial self-assessment tool at https://bc.thrive.health/covid19 and seek medical advice if you need further assessment.

demic and have come out quite strong. If we lose focus too soon or the restrictions are lifted too early, the huge sacrifices you have all made could be in vain. Please continue social and physical distancing, wash your hands, try not to touch your face, consider a face cloth covering when out in public and stay at home whenever possible.

If you are symptomatic, you must self-isolate and stay at home for at least 10 days and until your symptoms have disappeared.

• If you are unsure about these recommendations, please contact us for clarity. We are here for you and eager to offer help when needed. By seeking information, you are helping protect your family, your neighbours, your friends and our community.

Diagnostic testing and expansion Our capacity to test for the virus is ramping up. We are now able to expand testing to a few extra groups, including patients with a fever and those with a new onset or worsening of cough or shortness of breath, who are: • Residents of remote, isolated, or Indigenous communities.

• People living and working in congregate settings such as work-camps, correctional facilities, shelters, group homes, assisted living and seniors’ residences.

• People who are experiencing homelessness or have unstable housing.

• Essential service providers.

• Returning travellers identified at a point of entry into Canada.

This is in addition to the groups already being tested including: • Residents and staff of long-term care facilities.

• Healthcare workers.

• Patients requiring hospitalization, or likely to be hospitalized including: pregnant women in their third trimester, patients on hemodialysis or cancer patients receiving radiation or chemotherapy.

• Part of an investigation of a cluster or outbreak.

What is an antibody test and how can we use it?

Currently, the diagnostic tests that are approved for use in Canada work by identifying the actual genetics or the make-up of the virus. The function of these tests is to identify patients who actually have the live virus in their body. These are traditional tests that test for the presence of the virus. We are learning that understanding asymptomatic transmission (without symptoms) of the virus may be key to understanding how COVID-19 is spreading – and, hopefully, to eventually stopping it. New tests called antibody tests may be a key tool for us in the near future.

As doctors, we are currently being asked about a new antibody test and what value it offers for the current pandemic. These new rapid antibody tests use just a couple of drops of blood from a pinprick on the finger to detect the presence of antibodies that fight the virus. There is no trip to the laboratory, and results are available on the spot in 15 minutes. It costs about $10 per test. While the test can’t detect the virus in its early stage, this blood test is effective at diagnosing people about five to seven days after symptoms show up, once the body has had a chance to produce antibodies.

In normal cases, when you are exposed to an infec-

tion such as COVID-19, your body’s immune system is activated to fight the infection. One of the ways it does this is to form specific proteins called antibodies which identify the virus and help the rest of the immune system destroy it. We have learned ways of identifying these antibodies. In doing so, we can identify patients who have been exposed to the virus and those who are likely immune to it.

The value of antibody testing is not to identify who HAS the virus, but rather to identify patients who have HAD the virus, and are now considered immune. To know you are immune would provide important information to help get people back to work and feel safe moving around the community, while we wait for a vaccine to be developed and approved.

The new rapid antibody tests that we are hearing about have not yet been approved for use in Canada.

Ottawa is being urged to fast-track the new rapid coronavirus antibody test. But, it’s critically important to remember we need to know this test will be as effective as it claims to be. The stakes are very high with this novel virus. With this in mind, doctors and scientists are working diligently to be very sure the new rapid antibody tests are validated and accurate. Otherwise, no value can be put into the test results no matter how badly we want them.

Once a validated test is available, we are hopeful we will be able to use it widely. And, I will keep you informed.

More words of thanks I continue to be humbled by the generosity and willingness of those who have shared precious personal protective equipment (PPE) for our doctors and medical health care providers. We are so thankful for the donations from individuals and businesses from our local community and our part-time residents from Alberta.

These donations are ongoing.

I would like to thank the many seamstresses in the valley who have volunteered and have already made and donated cloth face protection to the hospital and the community. Please keep making cloth masks. Please drop completed items off at the Invermere Fire Department.

C VID-19 UPDATE Food for thought…the COVID-19 curiosity

Resource, Development & Advocacy Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses found mostly in animals. In humans, they can cause diseases ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The disease caused by this new coronavirus has been named COVID-19.

While many of the characteristics of COVID-19 are still unknown, mild to severe illness has been reported for confirmed cases. B.C. has declared a state of emergency and a public health emergency

How does the COVID-19 spread?

Coronavirus is spread from an infected person through: • Droplets spread when a person coughs or sneezes • It can be spread by touch if a person has used their hands to cover their mouth or nose when they cough or sneeze.

• Touching an object or surface with the virus on

What is Coronavirus/COVID-19? it, then touching your mouth, nose or eyes before washing your hands.

How do I protect myself and family against COVID-19?

In addition to physical distancing, the most important thing you can do to prevent infection is to wash your hands regularly and avoid touching your face. To help reduce your risk of infection: • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Using soap and water is the single most effective and preferred way of reducing the spread of infection.

• If a sink is not available, alcohol based hand rubs (ABHR) can be used to clean your hands as long as they are not visibly soiled. If they are visibly soiled, use a wipe and then ABHR to effectively clean them.

• Do not touch your face, eyes, nose or mouth

with unwashed hands.

• Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.

• Do not share food, drinks, utensils, etc.

• Facemasks are not recommended or required for people who are not sick and are not healthcare workers.

Is there a treatment for COVID-19?

There is no specific treatment for disease caused by COVID-19. Many of the symptoms can be managed with home treatment such as drinking plenty of fluids, rest and using a humidifier or hot shower to ease a cough or sore throat. Most people recover from coronaviruses on their own. For people with more serious illness supportive care in or out of hospital may be needed.

How to deal with the COVID-19 fear factor?

Communicable diseases existed during humankind’s hunter-gatherer days, but the shift to agrarian life 10,000 years ago created communities that made epidemics more possible. Malaria, tuberculosis, leprosy, influenza, smallpox and others first appeared during this period. When an epidemic spreads beyond a country’s borders, that’s when the disease officially becomes a pandemic.

The Story: You may have heard or read this story in your childhood.

A long, very long time ago, during the medieval times, somewhere in Europe, whenever there was an epidemic or a Communicable Disease breaking in, even before it entered the city, a few monks would stand at the entrance gate protecting the city. Often, the Disease would not be alone. It would have two companions - Death and Fear.

Once, during one of the worst epidemic in this city, in Europe, the monks encountered the dreadful Disease, Death, and Fear at the gate, trying to enter their city.

“How many people will you take with you?” asked the monks of the three.

“I will take these many people with me”, said the Disease.

“I will take half the number of people which the Disease will take” said the Death.

And when Fear was asked how many people it would take, it said “I will not take anyone with me”.

After speaking thus, all the three, unfortunately, advanced into the city.

In a few weeks’ time, after the epidemic spread completely, these three were taking back people with them through the same city gates where the monks were waiting. What the monks saw was that the Disease was taking away a said number of people. Death was also taking away as many people as it had promised earlier.

But Fear was taking away the maximum number of people.

So the monks asked Fear, “You had promised not to

take anyone. Why is it that the maximum number of people are behind you?” So the Fear answered, “I am not taking them.

They are voluntarily coming behind me”.

Fast forward to the present era.

Today, there is a similar environment being created. On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization announced that the COVID-19 virus is officially a pandemic- and typically, accompanied by disease, death, and fear. And history is repeating itself.

Fear is overpowering us right now…or is it?

With the modern day medical breakthroughs and technical advancements, we now know better than the medieval populations of Europe. We now know about the devastating effect of Fear and we also know how to control this natural fight/flight/freeze reaction (of the sympathetic nervous system) to perceivable imminent danger. We have the knowledge that we can consciously choose to trigger the para-sympathetic nervous system to enhance the rest and restore healing state of being.

Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Follow the guidelines of the health authorities and government.

Stress is a natural response to uncertainty in the context of a pandemic. Stress is the body’s response to mental and emotional pressure. Research informs us that ongoing stress can impact our ability to remain healthy and resilient. It is important to recognize our strengths and to incorporate positive strategies that we have previously used to get through difficult times. We can learn to manage our stress by engaging in the following activities: 1) Positive self care: eating healthy food, getting enough sleep, exercising, staying connected with family and friends through phone calls, texting and video calls.

2) Healthy activities: listening to music, playing an instrument, dancing, sketching, painting, creating art projects, playing games, reading, cooking, journaling, walking, running, yoga, tai-chi, meditation, prayer, and enjoying nature.

3) Practice breathing techniques such as slow, deep breathing to calm the mind and the body. Take a slow deep breath in as you count to 5, briefly hold the breath and then exhale slowly counting to 5. You can repeat this for 10 breaths and practice throughout the day.

4) Prioritize relaxation and rest to cope with the uncertainty. Taking personal time helps us to recharge.

5) Take time to be alone with feelings and thoughts. Be willing to feel some of the uncomfortable feelings such as sadness, fear, and anger. Breathe into the feelings and welcome them. Our emotions contain valuable information for us. Extend compassion and kindness to self and others.

6) Incorporate self-affirming words or phrases such “calm”, “peace”, “I am relaxing” and “we will get through this”. These words can be spoken aloud or silently within.

7) Attitude is important. Keep problems in proper perspective and have a realistic outlook.

Accept that there are events that are beyond our control. Focus upon gratitude and appreciation. Notice what you are thankful for. Remember that good things can emerge from tough circumstances.

Women’s Outreach – Women’s outreach supports women who are victims of family violence, by providing support to access services, like housing, transportation to appointments and advocacy.

Women’s Counselling – Staff in this program provides counselling for women who have been physically or sexually abused, or who are survivors of childhood abuse.

Victim Assistance – This Police based program provides support and information to victims of crime and traumatic events.

would like to thank each and every one of you for your perseverance during this global health crisis. I know it is not easy.

During these difficult times, it is heartening to see the way communities and neighbours are coming together to support each other in a time of crisis. I know that both resilience and collaboration is what makes our communities strong, and is what will get us through this together.

I recognize that the challenges our Valley is currently facing, and will be facing for many months ahead are unique. With many small businesses relying on visitors this season, the Valley must continue to come together and support each other as we know best. If this pandemic has taught us anything at all, it is that we are more connected to each other than we thought.

It is clear that COVID-19 is causing unprecedented challenges right here in our community and I urge everyone to continue to follow the guidance of our Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry, to lead us out of this crisis.

While Dr. Henry has expressed some cautious optimism for BC, we need to continue to do our part to prevent the spread of this virus so we can flatten the curve and keep everyone safe. This requires every individual to join the fight against COVID-19.

As your representative in the provincial government, I will continue to advocate for government support for both individuals and businesses so we are able to get through this and come out on top. I want to assure you that myself and my team are still available by phone and email if you have any questions or concerns.

The silver lining of self-isolation Five ways pandemic prevention is making us better humans

By Heather McLeod Special to the Pioneer https://www.heatherwmcleod.com Yes, it’s a dark, unpredictable, overwhelming storm cloud … but there are some glimmers of light for those of us self-isolating during the COVID-19 / coronavirus pandemic: Increased kid + parent time In 2016, when my son was 2.75 years old, we were concerned about his speech. I made a list of the words he could say: there were only about 20. Then we went on a 62-day road-trip across Canada. Just me, my husband and our son in a 1986 Ford Frontier motorhome.

By the end of that trip, Isaac’s vocabulary was too large to write down. It wasn’t as if we ignored our kid before then, but that intensive, 24/7/61 time together helped him blossom.

Four years later, my son and I spend all day, every day, together at home: his cough and fever on March 16 meant lockdown for our little family, just as “self-isolation” and “social distancing” became important terms in Canada.

This is my six-year-old’s happiest dream come true: daily playtime and constant snuggles with his mom. His manners have improved. He gets angry less often. I’ve never heard him laugh this much.

It won’t surprise me if “pandemic 2020” becomes one of my son’s happiest memories.

To nurture this, I try to keep my screen time low.

It’s hard to resist checking for news, to take the pulse via social media of how our society is handling this plague.

I try to not worry about money, and the inevitable recession. When he asks why he can’t visit his grandpar-

ents or aunt, I explain that we’ve both been sick with a cough, and so we’re staying home to avoid spreading germs. There’s no need to use big words like “pandemic” and “quarantine.”

Community building It’s beautiful to see how people are connecting and helping one another through this. We live in a small Canadian town of 3,600 people. Families are putting cutout paper hearts in their windows, volunteering to deliver groceries, buying gift certificates to support our local businesses, and posting grateful messages to the frontline, essential-services workers.

Speaking of those front-line workers: we’re all realizing how critical our grocery store clerks, food producers, truck drivers, garbage collectors, tradespeople, daycare providers, pharmacists and other service providers are.

In communities around the world, people are going outside to make noise, bang pots, and play music to show their appreciation for these employees who are risking their own health to keep our society running. My son and I go on our deck at 7 p.m. to do this every day. It feels good to say “thank-you,” and it’s cathartic, to cause a ruckus in our silent neighbourhood after a day spent mostly indoors.

Facebook groups have sprung up, connecting parents with kids at home, volunteer grocery deliverers with those self-isolating, and people in general. Our local co-working business has closed their office space, but now hosts a “work from home” Zoom channel.

Innovation Farmers’ markets and other direct-market sales models have become risky or have been cancelled, so my friends in the agriculture world are brainstorming how to get their food to customers in this new world.

Some solutions include partnering with other businesses to reduce direct contact, offering online sales, and delivering.

Organizers of large events are coming up with new ways to continue: the Social Distancing Festival celebrates and broadcasts art and talent from all over the world. WORDFest moved online. There’s even an online marathon, for the runners.

Reduced spending They say that over half of Canadians live paycheque to paycheque.

While I expect a recession is inevitable, that we’ll survive this “with levels of debt equalling those at the end of the Second World War” (as Vaughn Palmer predicts), this pandemic is Heather and Isaac McLeod celebrated Easter and Heather’s 40th birthday at the Easter Car also teaching us how little Conga on Sunday, April 12.

It’s an aggressive, forced lesson in family budgeting.

When we aren’t able to shop daily, when we’re limited to online purchases and courier delivery, when we can’t go out for dinner or travel and aren’t even buying gas, our spending will decline. With so many people unable to work, we’ll become more aware of which bills have to be paid. We’re about to find out which expenses are “essentials” (e.g. food, internet), and which are luxuries (e.g. new shoes, Hallmark cards).

Maybe, like those who lived through the great wars, we’ll carry these new, thrifty values into our post-pandemic lives.

Refined values Speaking of values, being at home with my son is reminding me of what’s important. We check in frequently with my parents, grandma and sister’s family. I’ve visited (via Facetime) with friends I haven’t seen in a year. Our life is less frantic and I’m seeking out novel distractions to liven up our days, so I’m reaching out to people I am usually “too busy” to connect with.

I turn 40 in April and had dozens of adventures planned to celebrate in 2020: a trip to Legoland California, a two-week family camping trip, a half-marathon, a women’s retreat, a music festival, and much more. Now, these adventures will likely not happen. Instead of a year of adventures, I face a year (months? weeks?) of confinement or social-distancing, along with my son. But maybe this refocus from outward to inward is the perfect 40th birthday gift to myself. Maybe this is a different kind of adventure.

Our world is in the midst of a mandatory staycation. We are being forced to spend time alone or with our loved ones. If we can manage to put our phones down, we might re-discover why we chose these loved ones in the first place. We might re-discover ourselves. *** This pandemic is a terrible thing, especially for those infected, those on the frontlines, and those who have lost a loved one.

Every morning I wake up and groggily realize I’ll be spending another day at home, mostly indoors, with my son. This is our normal, now. Compared to others, my son and I have been asked to do an easy thing: to self-isolate, and spend time together.

This is our silver lining.

Social distancing for wildlife, please

Don’t get too close: Keeping a respectful and safe distance from wildlife reduces pressure on stressed species.

Of course, none of this is by choice: it’s because of necessary self-isolation, social distancing and even quarantine in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Still, you can think of it as a silver lining in terms of connecting with nature (albeit not in the national parks or deep in the backcountry) in a quiet, mindful way.

However, a pair of ardent Columbia Valley outdoor photographers are sounding a note of caution, urging humans to take care when out enjoying the great outdoors and not to get too close to local wildlife. In other words, social distancing for animals as well as people, please.

Local photographer and Wilmer resident Pat Morrow sent the Pioneer an image (on the right) of a couple out walking on frozen stretches of the Columbia River Wetlands, clearly having a great time and eager to get better views of swans and other waterfowl, but unfortunately disturbing the birds as a result.

“The folks and their unleashed dog in this photo, determined to get closer to nature, strode cavalierly toward the resting birds until every single one of them flew on to the next safe haven. This unwitting act is repeated thousands of times every day, across the globe. A month ago, I saw several fat-tired bicyclists riding along the same stretch of frozen pond (see above photo), enjoying their own company, blissfully unaware as a frightened herd of elk and white tail deer fled through the cottonwood trees behind them,” said Morrow. “If we expect to be nurtured by nature, let’s learn to treat her with the respect she de-

serves and all else will fall into place.”

The Columbia River Wetlands, where the photo was taken, is a designated RAMSAR wetland of international importance, and one of the largest intact wetlands on the continent, reaching 180 kilometres from Canal Flats to Donald (north of Golden) and covering 26,000 hectares.

The wetlands are quite biodiverse, encompassing 16 habitat types (such as marshes, open waters, shrub levees and floodplain forest). They shelter elk, deer, wolves, cougars, grizzly bears, fish, amphibians, insects, more than 260 bird species and nearly 40 threatened animal and plant species. Of course, wildlife is no less sensitive in the many other landscapes throughout the Columbia Valley.

“When it comes to social distancing, the current paradigm (related to the pandemic) is to limit our proximity to each other to protect the health of our fellow human beings,” said Morrow. “However, when considering the need to physically distance ourselves from vulnerable wildlife, such as the hundreds of exhausted transient waterfowl and shore birds that had just landed to get a much-needed break in the Columbia Valley wetlands, we must bear in mind that, according to the World Wildlife Fund, global wildlife populations have declined by 60 per cent in just a bit more than 40 years due to habitat loss and human intervention.”

Morrow’s sentiments were echoed by retired Parks Canada biologist and Invermere photographer Ross MacDonald, who told the Pioneer that “not all habitat is created equal. Animals move between peak habitats, often on a seasonal basis; it is a matter of survival for them. In early spring we see migratory birds seeking open water for food and protection. Some species, such as the swans in Pat’s photo, seek shallow water at ice edges for food, and humans can easily drive them from this prime habitat, causing stress for the animal. Too many stressors and the animals may not reproduce or even survive.”

MacDonald explained that owing to decades of habitat fragmentation and myriad other factors, many species in the Columbia Valley are already stressed, and humans need to do what they can to reduce pressure, saying that: “I am hoping that people use this opportunity with the pandemic to reconnect with nature, but also recognize that we are sharing that nature with a lot of other species.”

So how do you enjoy the Columbia Valley’s wildlife without disturbing them? MacDonald recommends using common sense and giving the animals space, or if you want to see things in more intimate detail, using a pair of binoculars. Using binoculars is “a great way to keep a respectful distance and still get a great view,” he said.

Wings says welcome and farewell Submitted by Wings Over The Rockies Wings Over The Rockies Nature Festival announces a face change. Outgoing festival planner Jami Scheffer is handing over the torch to Barbara Thrasher.

After a dozen years planning the events for the festival, Jami is moving to Bowen Island to take the executive director position for the local arts council. Jami said that her time with the Wings Festival and its board of directors has been an amazing and fulfilling learning experience.

“I now know the difference between a robin and a heron!” she said.

Barbara Thrasher shared her enthusiasm at taking on

the planning role.

“I am very excited about joining the Wings team as the festival educates the public on that fine balance between economic prosperity and protecting and sustaining wildlife and habitats.”

Barbara brings great leadership experience. She has received such impressive recognitions as Global TV’s Women of Vision Award and Canadian Woman Entrepreneur: Impact on the Local Economy. She is also a bestselling coauthor of Smart Women. Barbara relocated to Invermere in the autumn of 2019 for kayaking and to explore nature as preventative medicine.

Although Barbara is busy helping with the cancella-

tion of the 2020 Wings Festival, due to COVID-19, she already has ideas for the 2021 Festival.

With that in mind, Wings will be creating a dynamic festival next year (May 10-16, 2021), to connect people to the remarkable nature and culture of the Upper Columbia Valley. Wings became one of the largest wildlife festivals in Canada, in part, through the ongoing support of our donors. Please support the businesses that are suffering during this pandemic. Change in staff and in ways to share art with community Submitted by Columbia Valley Arts Council New executive director The Columbia Valley Arts Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Sami Wackerle as executive director.

Sami’s past work experience as the program director of the Canmore Museum & Geoscience Centre will be a great asset to the arts council and its members. One of Canmore’s great destinations, the museum offers a variety of collections, programs and opportunities for residents and visitors “that celebrate mountain life.”

In addition to her experiences in the not-for-profit sector in support of the museum’s board of directors, her specific duties included volunteer recruitment and management, community and school programming, event organization and delivery, partnership development, website development and marketing/communications. Sami also worked with their collections department on exhibit design – often with complementary programming to encourage community connections to new exhibits. And she has had specific experiences in the upkeep of historic buildings, attending to Canmore’s 1893 North-West Mounted Police Barracks Building.

So Sami is delighted to know that she will have an office within our wonderful Pynelogs Centre, and also play a significant role in its stewardship.

Sami has also worked for Parks Canada, having spent her university years as a volunteer mentor in an online graphic design community, and has recently returned to these roots to do marketing and promotion for a few of her artist friends.

On a personal note, Sami has achieved one of her life goals by being able to move to the Columbia Valley! She has visited the area many times and will be on a mission to explore the East Kootenays one back road at a time. Since her interests include hiking, snowboarding and kayaking, we know that she will find the transition here to be an easy one (COVID-19 notwithstanding). We can’t wait to show her more of the amazing resources of our valley – and most importantly – introduce her to the wonderful people who live and visit here. Sami began her position here on March 30. Welcome Sami!

New assistant gallery curator Kate Goldie moved to Invermere from New Brunswick in 2006 and quickly fell in love with the incredible area she now calls home. As an emerging artist, she is excited to be working so closely with the arts in such a fantastic setting!

When she’s not at work, Kate can be found painting and enjoying time in nature with her two toddlers.

Departing executive director Jami Scheffer has been at Columbia Valley Arts (CV Arts) for over 15 years.

She has built CV Arts with a number of boards from a small organization to one that brings live music to the valley on a regular basis and a multitude of art shows and events. We have Love It Live, the Invermere Music Festival, Fresh Fridays for those just starting out in the music world, as well as an open mike on Fridays with OSO. Jami has also started many art shows from Little Peeps to Art from the Heart and shows that run regularly for mature artists.

Jami has been instrumental in leading the CV Arts programs to where they are today. She will be missed by the past and the current board as well as the people in the valley who enjoy the wonderful events that have been organized by her at CV Arts. Her knowledge has developed over the past years as her experience has grown, and we are grateful for the years that she has dedicated to CV Arts. She has loved it and it has shown through her professionalism and hard work; it has been her baby.

We wish Jami the very best in her adventures on Bowen Island. She will be a huge asset to any arts council she joins. Good luck Jami and remember to come and visit this beautiful valley!

While current program coordinator, Shannon McGinty prepares to welcome a new water steward into the world, acting program coordinator, Georgia Peck, will be taking the helm of the Ambassadors’ ship! For the remainder of the year, the Lake Windermere Ambassadors

– led by the board of directors and Peck and supported by a community of volunteers – will continue to advocate for the health of Lake Windermere including the natural and recreational resources it provides.

Consistent water sampling, education and community outreach will persist, more than likely at a virtual level for the next few months, highlighting the ecological and economic importance of Lake Windermere. Upcoming projects include foreshore mapping, promotion of

public access around the lake, and compiling current and historical data into a detailed State of the Lake Report.

Peck, who studied wildlife conservation back in Ontario, moved to the valley in November 2018 and was immediately drawn to the lake for its canoeing and birding opportunities.

“I am very much looking forward to working with such a supportive community and enjoying all thewonderful benefits the lake has to offer,” she said.

Shuswap Indian Band and District of Invermere to create joint active transportation network plan

Shuswap Indian Band and District of Invermere officials pose at the Columbia River to highlight their partnership.

Submitted by Shuswap Indian Band and the District of Invermere Formally, since 2019, Shuswap Indian Band and District of Invermere have participated in the First Nation – Municipal Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI), a national program delivered jointly

by Cando (the Council for the Advancement of Native Development Officers) and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM). With support of the program, the two communities are working to build and strengthen their inter-community relationships, and to build capacity for joint community economic planning and development.

Utilizing the CEDI program supports, including third-party neutral facilitation, monthly meetings, bi-annual workshops, and joint strategic and work planning, Shuswap Indian Band and District of Invermere elected officials and staff identified several shared priorities. Using co-created selection criteria, their partnership has prioritized the development of a Joint Active Transportation Network Plan.

The shared vision for the Plan, is: “as neighbouring communities, we commit to removing barriers by creating a physical and symbolic connection through the development of an active transportation corridor. By respecting and leveraging our unique strengths, this corridor will enhance cross-cultural understanding and create mutually prosperous economic, social and environmental opportunities.”

In February 2020, Shuswap Indian Band and District of Invermere submitted a joint application to the Province of BC, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for the BC Active Transportation Network Plan Grant. The partnership also has support from the CEDI program (Capacity Building Grant of $35,000), and in addition, both Councils have adopted resolutions to commit financial support for development of this joint community economic development initiative.

“I am confident that our common goals for local economic development and social well-being will foster benefits that extend to many other aspects of community building, and CEDI is giving us the framework to work together to achieve strong local results. God has granted us the tremendous power to choose who we will be. Our character and our core values are results of our choices.

Every choice we make has a consequence. We can be victorious, overcoming believers. As it says in Philippians 4:7: “And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Peace, forgiveness, joy are choices we can make each day.

God tells us in Jeremiah 29:11- 13: “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Then shall you call upon Me, and you shall go and pray to Me, and I will hearken to you. And you shall seek Me, and find Me, when you shall search for Me with all your heart.”

Every day we make choices, some good, some bad.

However as we spend time seeking after God and His plan for us, the choices, (if we heed the direction of God),

will be right choices.

With all that is going on around us, and in the world, there could be much to be concerned about.

However as we put our trust in God, and as we make the choice to follow Him and His direction, He will make a way.

John 14:6: “Jesus said unto him, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life: no man comes unto the Father, but

by Me.” And a couple of chapters later in John 16:33: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me you might have peace. In the world you shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

God desires that we live in blessing in every area of our lives. He desires that we have peace that surpasses understanding. He’s given promises in His Word (the Bible) and has established a plan for us to live in total victory.

He has given us the answers, however we are the ones who have to choose to obey His direction. We have the final choice, so choose life and blessing! Choose to live life well!

Romans 8:31: “What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?”

As it says in Joshua 1:9: “Have not I commanded you? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with you whereever you go.”

Life is a choice, choose to live it well.
