As Nelson hotels close, some try to stay open without guests

Every morning, Chris Drysdale puts on gloves and disinfects the doorknobs of empty rooms.

Barely anyone is staying at the Cloudside Hotel right now. Drysdale, the owner, said he lost all his guests for March and April, as well as many rooms booked through August.

But the hotel is still open, even if the targeted clientele have changed. With tourism essentially dead, Cloudside Hotel has set aside four rooms available to people in need of self-isolation at a negotiable rate.

“We’re not looking to make any money. People [are short] of dollars right now,” said Drysdale. “If someone comes in and offers a price that’s way below our prices, I will give them that. Because they obviously need it and anything we can take is to our benefit at the moment.”

Many accommodators in and around Nelson have closed due COVID-19 travel restrictions that keep tourists, and their dollars, out of town.

In the city, Hume Hotel and Best Western Plus, both owned by the Martin Hotel Group, have closed, as has the Savoy Inn, Dancing Bear Inn and North Shore Inn. Others have opted to stay open — albeit with staff reductions and lowered expectations.

Cathy-Ann Glockner has owned Victoria Falls Guesthouse for a decade. Like Drysdale, she says her book-

ings through the summer vanished. But she also considers herself lucky.

“There are so many people in worse-off situations than us who are working,” she says.

“My husband fortunately still has an income with his business, so we’re not destitute. I know people have lost minimum wage jobs and they don’t have anything.”

Glockner’s focus changed when friends who had been abroad needed a place to self-isolate. Whereas in the past her guests might include skiers in town for the end of the season, now Glockner prepares rooms for people who may be contagious or ill.

“What we have to offer right

now is space. It’s not being used, it’s not making us any money, it may as well help some people who can use it.”

Practically that has meant some changes for Glockner and Drysdale.

When a guest leaves Victoria Falls, Glockner closes the room for three days before a cleaner goes in. At Cloudside, Drysdale and one of his staff do a daily disinfection of anything that may have been touched outside rooms.

“People say, oh being nice to guests is the No. 1 priority or maybe even hygiene is No. 1,” said Drysdale. “Since this business started about 14 years ago, our No. 1 priority has always been safety. No. 2 is

hygiene. That’s never changed.

This is not new for us.”

Bigger changes have been required at Nelson’s largest hotels.

Both the Prestige Lakeside Resort and Prestige Inn Nelson are owned by the same company, Prestige Hotels and Resorts. The Lakeside Resort remains open, but the Prestige Inn has been closed.

A request to interview general manager John Le Bleu was declined by the company, which instead sent the Star a statement from president Terry Schneider.

With the long-term viability of our hotel’s future in mind, last week we made the difficult decision to close our smaller property, the Prestige Inn Nelson.

“However, we continue to operate the Prestige Lakeside Resort Nelson and open its doors to those needing accommodations. Our hearts go out to all local businesses facing the same tough times as us.”

The Adventure Hotel has closed its three restaurants, but its 40 rooms remain available.

When the Star spoke with general manager Rob Little, however, just one of those rooms was occupied.

“We’re in this rock and a

hard place of wanting to keep people employed but at the same time recognizing this is a major situation,” said Little.

“We almost view it as a bit of a social responsibility to make sure there is some accommodation available, because we certainly aren’t profiting off it.”

Little said staff are kept out of occupied rooms and daily maid service has ended. On checkout, the room is quarantined for 48 hours before it is cleaned. The hotel’s restaurants, meanwhile, have begun offering deliveries based off a modified menu.

As a consequence, far fewer people are working at the hotel now. Little said some staff with health considerations voluntarily left, as did others who said they could afford to do so. Seasonal workers, many of whom were already leaving with the end of ski tourism, also planned to leave.

Little said right now the hotel is working to keep employed those he refers to as core staff.

“We’ve been very fortunate over the last however many years doing business in this town. These people helped us get here, so we’re not going to abandon them in this situation,” he said.

“We’re going to work together and figure out how we come out the other side and make sure no one is in a situation of not being able to pay their rent or not being able to feed their family. We’re in that holding pattern and still trying to do some business to make that happen.”

Ivy at Nelson Courthouse to be removed

The ivy at the Nelson Courthouse, which has long served as one of the city’s iconic visuals, is to be cut down.

The Ministry of Citizen Services’ real property division, which manages the courthouse, announced last week the ivy is causing damage to the facade of the 112-year-old building and must be removed starting this month.

A ministry spokesperson said there are no plans to replace it.

On Monday, city council approved the ministry’s heritage alteration permit subject to several conditions including “controlled replanting of appropriate species of ivy take place as soon as possible.”

It’s not clear if the ministry will follow those conditions, which it isn’t obligated to abide by.

An assessment by Fairbank Architects dated March 10 states the growth is damaging the facade’s marble exterior and mortar, windows, gutters and roof.

Rats and rodents are also nesting in the ivy and using it to get inside, it is getting in the way of security cameras, and the roots are compromising the building’s foundation and leading to water damage.

Mayor John Dooley said he understands

plan had been in place to trim the ivy, but was too costly and inefficient. The courthouse’s marble exterior, meanwhile, is regarded as soft and susceptible to damage by the ivy.

The courthouse is designated a municipal heritage site, and the ivy is described as a “character-defining element.” The recommendation adopted Monday by city council also asks that the courthouse be designated a provincial heritage building and that no “potentially harmful” work such as power washing take place without consulting a conservation specialist.

The Nelson Courthouse was designed by Francis Rattenbury and constructed in 1908.

It’s not clear when ivy spread over the building, but a postcard provided by local historian Greg Nesteroff shows it was present as early as 1931.

The ivy at the courthouse has a special meaning to Susan Wallach.

The Nelson native was a lawyer for 36 years prior to her retirement, while her grandfather Alexander Carrie was a supervising architect for the courthouse when it was originally built.

Blewett Elementary expansion denied provincial funding

An expansion to Blewett Elementary meant to relieve overcrowding won’t go ahead after the plan was denied provincial funding.

School District 8 submitted a $5-million plan to the Ministry of Education to add 112 seats, or four classrooms, to the school as part of the district’s five-year capital budget.

But in a letter dated March 25, the ministry denied the plan

based on Blewett’s 10-year enrolment projections.

“The ministry now recognizes that the school’s existing capacity meets the requirement for current and future enrolment and has made the decision to remove support for this project,” it read.

Built in 1962, Blewett Elementary currently has 158 students, or 49 more than its stated operating capacity. It’s projected to have 143 students next year.

School District 8 secretary-treasurer Michael McLellan said the original proposal was sent to the ministry based on outdated projections. New stats, he said, show the school will remain overcapacity for the next few years before tapering off.

McLellan added the district may also consider other solutions to take pressure off Blewett.

our students,” he said. “However, the board will look at all options that are going to work best for all students and stakeholders.”

The district has recently made several changes to address overcrowding at its schools.

In December, trustees voted to move Grade 9 students from L.V. Rogers to Trafalgar Middle School beginning in September 2021 to relieve future pressure on Nelson’s only high school.

Then in January, the district

agreed to a plan that would expand Winlaw Elementary with the addition of a 1,500 square foot modular unit.

The plan for Blewett would have also expanded the gym and administration area. But Blewett’s expansion, McLellan said, doesn’t fit with the ministry’s current priorities, which include a focus on capacity issues at Lower Mainland schools.

“We had actually proposed a scaled down project to the ministry, but even in a scaled down,

much lower cost proposal we still didn’t meet the criteria to be awarded funding and continue with the process.”

The district still received $1.634 million for several capital projects. They include: a new HVAC system for Mount Sentinel Secondary ($244,000); mechanical upgrades to South Nelson Elementary ($850,000); electrical system upgrades to Trafalgar Middle School ($400,000); and a new bus ($140,000).

Bylaw officers keeping a watch on physical distancing

The message appears to have been received — officers in charge of keeping an eye on physical distancing say British Columbians are steering clear of each other.

An order by Mike Farnworth, Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General, on March 26 gave municipal bylaw officers the power to act on gatherings of more than 50 people in public spaces or on private businesses such as restaurants that contravened provincial health orders meant to contain the spread of COVID-19.

The Star examined municipalities across B.C. to see how Farnworth’s orders have been followed. Enforcement, it turns out, is often unnecessary and not as effective as a kind reminder to keep two metres apart.

In Nelson, where the police department administrates and supervises bylaw officers, Chief Paul Burkart said he’s advised staff that education is the goal with physical distancing.

Enforcement, he added, is more about reminding residents of the rules and, if necessary, following up with the health authority.

“We’re not out there with a tape measure, because that’s not enforceable as far as we’re concerned,” he said.

And in B.C., that mostly hasn’t been necessary.

Surrey Surrey RCMP Cpl. Elenore Sturko is part of a team organized by police and city bylaw officers following Farnworth’s announcement.

As of Thursday, officers had issued nine warnings to 202 businesses visited and also found parks including the popular Crescent Beach usually quiet.

Sturko said officers found a willingness in residents to do the right thing. Businesses that required a warning, she added, were not trying to flout the rules.

A city spokesperson told Black Press bylaw officers made 9,295 restaurant inspections and also checked 2,658 personal care facilities. Only one restaurant, a Tim Hortons, had its business licence suspended and was forced to close for three days.

The Vancouver Park Board, meanwhile, has jurisdiction over the city’s 230-plus parks. Park board spokesperson Christine Ulmer said over 5,000 signs reminding residents to keep their space have been placed, parking lots have been closed to discourage traffic, and park rangers have been deployed to the city’s popular destinations.

Victoria Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps said her city doesn’t have bylaw officers to spare. She hoped Emergency Management B.C., which co-ordinates provincial disaster planning, would help with additional resources.

“Just follow the rules because not doing so is really costly, not only to public health but from a bottom line point of view,” said Helps.

“We don’t want to hire more bylaw officers, we don’t want to spend more taxpayer dollars on bylaw.”

In an email, a spokesperson for Emergency Management B.C. said compliance staff from other ministries, such as liquor and cannabis control officers, would be redeployed to support municipalities.

Penticton, Kelowna In Penticton, bylaw officers received 11 complaints between March 25 to 30, including another about a person who wasn’t self-isolating, according to bylaw services supervisor Tina Siebert.

While bylaw officers can enforce the provincial health order, they can’t actually issue fines. In practice this means officers report back to health authorities, who then decide on penalties. Kelowna, for example, announced its own bylaw enforcement measures Friday, but stipulated Interior Health would be in charge of financial penalties.

Local distiller wades through obstacles to help fight COVID-19

A Slocan Valley craft distillery is joining the fight against COVID19 by producing hand sanitizer.

But it hasn’t been easy.

“It is insane, the web I’m trying to get through right now,” says Lora Goodwin, who runs the Perry Siding-based Kootenay Country Craft Distillery with her husband.

Kootenay Country is a small craft distillery, producing 4,000 to 5,000 litres of gin and vodka annually with locally-sourced grains.

But when the pandemic started, Goodwin says they wanted to do their part to help ease the shortage of hand sanitizer.

The product uses ethanol, a type of alcohol, which can be made from sugar at distilleries like Kootenay Country.

The province has been good at relaxing the rules to address the issue — bending regulations so distillers like the Goodwins can raise the alcohol content to the level for effective sanitization. Distillers don’t have to use B.C.-only raw materials either.

“Being a craft distillery in B.C., we are held to some very strict regulations for what we can use in our products,” she says. “The [B.C. Liquor Distribution Branch] has

“So I can just go and buy cheap sugar for the hand sanitizer.”

But on other fronts, it’s been a bit of a nightmare. Currently Goodwin is trying to untangle several important licences out of the red tape of the federal government.

“I’ve literally spent six hours on the computer today, trying to get up to date with Health Canada, because I have to obtain two more licences to make this happen,” she says. “I need licences through the [Canada Revenue Agency] for an Excise Warehouse Spirit Licence … and now I have to get another licence from the CRA for a user

licence, and two from Health Canada — for a product licence and site licence.”

But the pandemic is making that hard to do.

“It’s a lot of headache, because the government bureaucrats aren’t in their offices because of the situation we’re in,” she says. “They’ve been let go. So it’s talking to a lot of people on their phones at home.

They don’t have their workplace computers in front of them. It’s been interesting.”

And worst of all, she’s finding raw material suppliers — for sugar, glycerol and hydrogen peroxide — are starting to try to profit off the

shortage.

“When this became possible for us to do, I started pricing out ingredients for it,” she says. “And literally within 24 hours, some of the prices of the ingredients went up 100 per cent.

“Isn’t that crazy?”

Even once they cut all the red tape, nail down suppliers, get all the permissions and start production, she has a final problem — what to put the sanitizer in.

“Since we started trying to do this, finding bottles to put the product into is almost impossible,” she says.

Still, Goodwin is confident that they should soon be able to start delivering what she predicts will be about 1,000 litres of hand sanitizer.

And much of it is already spoken for. She has received requests from Nelson Home Care, the Nelson Police Department, BC Transit, Ootischenia Fire Department and community health facilities looking for the product.

She says all those orders will be delivered at cost as a community service.

A few hundred litres should be available commercially. But it’s too early to say where or when it may be available.

RDCK will take only essential garbage during pandemic runs the sites.

People who live in areas such as Nelson with curbside garbage pickup should not bring waste to the Grohman transfer station, she says.

Garbage is picked up at curbside in Nelson every two weeks.

“I’m not aware of household waste that cannot be stored for two weeks,” Wilson says. “Putrescible waste can be stored in the freezer to prevent odours.”

Residents are asked to bring only essential garbage to the three landfill sites and 14 waste transfer stations in the region, including Grohman, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Essential means things that are going bad or attracting pests,” says Amy Wilson, waste manager for the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK), which

“This is making the site traffic slower than normal, so any reduction in traffic is helpful,” she says.

There is no charge for disposal of essential waste. Wilson says this is to free up staff from having to handle money and debit ma-

chines.

“A lot of our sites don’t have running water and we were faced with a shortage of hygiene and sanitation supplies,” she says.

“Some of our sites like Grohman see hundreds of customers a day and they were not going to be able to keep up with their own protection and the protection of the public.”

Emergency dental clinic to open in Nelson

A group of Nelson dentists has created an emergency community dental clinic during the COVID-19 outbreak, which will start offering services this week.

Blair Day has worked at the TEETH clinic, providing affordable service to people with little or no income, for several years.

The new emergency service will take over and renovate the current TEETH clinic office on Front Street and enhance its services to include the general public, whom it will charge just enough to keep the clinic running.

“We are going to treat pain, infection and trauma,” Day says. “Different dentists will have different interpretations of that but it comes down to the dentist addressing those issues.”

How to apply The group is developing a thorough triage system so that emergency dentists and their assistants will see only the most serious cases face to face, and handle less serious cases on the phone.

Patients are asked to call their own dentist first with an emergency. If they can’t reach them or don’t have a dentist then they should call the emergency clinic at 250-352-3543.

“We have talked to all local dentists,” Day says. “They are aware and they are going to work with us.”

Staff at the emergency clinic will attempt to help patients over the phone without a clinic visit.

“Everything starts on the phone,” Day says.

“We don’t want anyone showing up at the clinic unannounced.”

Even in the aerosol-producing operatory, treatment will be limited.

“We are limiting treatment to simple procedures to help deal with pain, infection, or trauma. Patients will need to be made aware that in the future more definitive treatment may be needed to fully address their issues.”

Day sees these operatories as two separate clinics, open on different days of each week.

He has no idea how many patients they will have and says emergency cases amount to about 10 per cent of all dentist visits under normal conditions.

The clinic will be staffed with “the minimum of one receptionist, one sterilization tech, and one volunteer dentist. We may be joined by dental assistants on some days but we wish to keep staff limited to help limit COVID-19 risk.”

Payments and dental insurance The clinic’s dentists will be volunteering.

But their assistants will be paid and the clinic will have other operational costs including renovation costs.

Whenever the clinic does phone consultations, patients will be asked for a donation.

“For any clinical treatment we are going to operate as a fee-for-service clinic,” Day says. “But we will be working to maximize people’s insurance and government programs and government insurance. Otherwise we have no source of funding.”

I was very pleased to see many people out walking and running on my recent trip to town. I am also happy to see grocery stores doing their best to keep people from getting too close, and I certainly appreciate all those who are showing up to keep us supplied.

My only criticism would be on the decision to disallow reusable cloth bags, and the resulting return to ocean-killing single-use plastic bags. This is not a necessary measure, and will have a negative effect on our world environment, and in turn on animal and human health. There is no evidence that this regressive move is warranted, and I would ask my much loved favourite stores to look at the evidence and reverse this decision.

Air Canada has extended a suspension of all flights in and out of the West Kootenay Regional Airport until at least April 30.

The airline said the extension is needed due to increasing uncertainty around the COVID-19 crisis.

Despite the an-

nouncement, the airport will still remain open to general aviation, medical air and cargo service and the Southeast Fire Centre. However, the airport terminal building is closed to the public.

The City of Castlegar said it is still unsure if Air Canada flights will resume at the airport on May 1.

The Columbia Basin Trust has announced $11.7 million in new funding to provide immediate support for Basin residents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Trust announced on April 2 that they are offering support to small businesses, vulnerable populations and community organizations through new and existing programs.

“COVID-19 has created an unprecedented challenge for the Basin, and we have heard from communities, residents and our partners on different ways we can help,” said Johnny Strilaeff, Trust president and chief executive officer.

“We are responding with immediate support to assist the region through this extraordinary time.

This includes support for businesses, First Nations communities, food banks, social service agencies and child care operators.”

The Trust will be providing interest free loans through their new Small Business Working Capital Loan program to help them meet their

The Trust will also increase support to existing programs including the Impact Investment Fund, Basin RevUP, Summer Works, the Career Internship Program, Basin Business Advisors and Training Free Support.

New funding for First Nations communities, Métis associations, food banks, housing societies, hospices, licensed child care operators and community social service agencies is also available.

Trust plans also include helping social service organizations switch

to a digital format, so that their programming and supports are still available to residents.

Funding will also be provided to organizations that serve the most vulnerable in the community.

These grants are intended to be used for the following: • capital renovations and purchases to modify and adapt physical space to COVID-19 service delivery requirements (this includes renovations such as: secondary entrance, plexi-glass shields, hand washing stations and other physical modifications) • new or enhanced service delivery expenses to help residents, such as: remote service delivery, COVID-related counselling and support, transportation costs, food vouchers, food delivery and cleaning supplies • workplace adaptation expenses to support remote working and ensure service delivery can continue (e.g. laptops, phones, remote working software subscriptions), as well as technology and subscription purchases for clients who demonstrate

financial need and require technology to access services or education/ training • loss of revenue and expenses resulting from closures, cancelled services or programs, bans on community gatherings, and other financial disruptions due to COVID-19.

“Not only will this increased funding support business and community organizations to address COVID-19 impacts, each dollar is invested in our region and will provide broader economic development benefits,” said Strilaeff.

“During this most difficult time, I encourage everyone to follow public health recommendations and to be kind, compassionate and supportive of one another.”

The Trust has also taken several other measures to continue to support the region while meeting public health requirements. This includes postponing the public engagement process to renew its strategic plan, closing all Trust offices to the public, and communicating with the people and organizations it works with.

On April 2, crews from Nelson Fire and Rescue Services visited local grocery stores to offer guidance and observe precautions being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The stores included: SaveOn-Foods, Safeway, Kootenay Co-op, Canadian Wholesale Club, Walmart and Ellison’s Market. Crews observed slightly different systems within each store, but all stores were in com-

pliance with the Ministry of Health’s orders and recommendations.

“I am pleased with the level of precautions and procedures local grocers are taking to keep their staff and the public safe.” says acting fire chief Mike Daloise. “These are trying times for many, and I want to thank the staff and management of these retailers for working so diligently to safeguard their customers.”

A convoy of emergency vehicles travelled through Nelson on Thursday evening, their lights and sirens expressing thanks to the city’s health care workers and to each other.

The 34-vehicle procession included police officers, firefighters, conservation officers, sheriffs, search and rescue personnel, and salvage workers. They visited Kootenay Lake Hospital, Mountain Lake Seniors Community and Lakeview Village where staff stood outside waving.

Paramedic Kari Whitfield, one of the organizers, said it was a way for essential service workers to thank each other.

A ban on open burning is in place for Nelson and surrounding areas.

The ban is part of province-wide restrictions mandated by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy in response to the COVID19 pandemic.

The local volunteer director for the B.C. Lung Association thinks the ban has the potential to save lives. “Because COVID19 can severely impact one’s respiratory function,� said Michael Jessen, “it is especially important we do not add another breathing problem to the atmosphere by open burning.�

Originaire du Québec, il décide de consacrer encore plus de temps à l’art lorsqu’il arrive dans les Kootenays. Il est enseignant, animateur radio et il explore les mondes pour ses pratiques spirituelles.

Artiste slameur de haut niveau, il a remporté plusieurs compétitions et a animé les auditoires avec son flot dynamique et époustouflant.

En ces temps difficiles, Vincent nous apporte les bons mots, ceux qui résonnent dans les coeurs de chacun, ici dans nos montages. Le 2 avril dernier, il partageait ce poème sur les réseaux sociaux. C’est un texte inspiré d’une escapade en montagne comme on en rêve. En effet, c’est à cela qu’il faut penser quand nos yeux se ferment, le soir avant de s’endormir, il faut penser aux aventures et aux escapades. Vincent, merci pour la poésie.

Alors je reste à la maison , encerclé des arbres, des montagnes et de lumière, Je sais toute la force de l’humanité s i elle n’oublie pas en qui elle évolue, Je n’oublie le sol, le ciel, le feu, je suis venu, j’ai vu et je n’ai pas vaincu.

J’ai vu que je suis ne suis pas au centre de tout, je ne suis qu’un astre dans la constellation de la vie, Il y aura encore des désastres et nous résisterons tant qu’il y a aura encore de la poésie.

Local businesses keep going despite difficult times A considerable number of Nelson businesses are doing what they can to keep at it during these tough times.

Speaking on Kootenay Co-op Radio’s morning program this week, Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce executive director Tom Thomson estimated roughly 200 local business are either allowing customers in for direct purchases and delivery-based drops offs, or offering their

“We have to take our hats off to those business owners and staff who are still doing what they can,” says Thomson, “and keep in mind those shops and stores that are open are adhering to very strict B.C. health guidelines in regards to the safety of their customers and staff.”

The Nelson Fire Department conducted health inspections of all the grocery stores in

town last week and found all in compliance with the province’s new COVID-19 health guidelines.

Thomson suggests local business owners monitor bi-weekly economic “pulse checks” being shared via the BCMindReader. com platform. Those include regular surveys of the province’s small business sector.

The latest survey shows that 23 per cent of BC businesses have pivoted to on-line, digital,

or e-commerce options.

Other stats are a little more daunting, understandably.

The latest survey shows nearly one-third of B.C. businesses plan to cancel or have had contracts or tenders cancelled, while a quarter will defer or cancel capital projects in the next two weeks.

• Among those laying off staff, on average, organizations have laid off 43 employees.

As B.C. businesses tend to be

skewed to smaller businesses (fewer than 20 employees), the median or midpoint is much lower, at five employees.

• More than 50 per cent of businesses are concerned they will be insolvent or not have the fiscal capacity to restart their business.

• Businesses tend to expect the economic rebound in their market will be slow (55 per cent versus 14 per cent fast) Continued on Page A15

What kind of help are BC businesses asking the federal and provincial governments for? This is what the latest survey results show.

From Ottawa: • Provide direct payments to affected businesses (56 per cent).

• Immediately reduce rates for EI, company taxes, personal tax, GST, other government imposed levies or charges (42 per cent).

• Ensure that critical supply chains

are able to function (32 per cent).

• Ensure that credit markets and the financial system continue to function (33 per cent).

And from Victoria: • Further reduce tax rates and defer payments facing B.C. businesses and households (57 per cent).

• Consider remedies for businesses not able to pay rent in collaboration with property owners and tenants (42 per cent).

• Provide direct support to B.C. industry sectors that are being particularly affected by the pandemic crisis (46 per cent).

Many names spring forward – Barney Gross, Tubby Malone, and others. Self proclaimed greatest plumber was Rubin Peffler, who I had the privilege to meet.

Rubin was no more productive than his brothers, nor did he have fewer leaks. His greatest attribute was being able to stop a power vise with a 24” pipe wrench. He would chuck in a 2” nipple, then thread on a coupling until the threads buried and the vise stalled.

He was massively strong and was the company owners brother-in-law so demonstrations of his prowess went without reprimand.

The successful stalling of the machine would lead Rubin to proclaim his greatness. Having worked as a pipefitter he was a bit of a head case.

Rubin met an untimely end when a new vise had to be purchased to replace the burned-out old machine. During his weekly demonstration, the vise itself rotated, dragging Rubin along with it.

Quite a tangle ensued until someone had the presence of mind to unplug the machine. This both brought an end to the malarkey and de-throned poor Rubin.

Jesus is often described as being the first and the last; the alpha and omega, indicating that He was and is and always will be. As we approach the celebration of the death and subsequent resurrection of Jesus, I find myself preparing. I am excited to celebrate and remember Jesus, our Passover Lamb and the sacrifice He made upon that cross. God is omniscience, or all knowing. Even trying to wrap my head around what ‘all knowing’ entails is a wonder. In Genesis we read that, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The words that God speaks indicates the trinity worshiped in the Christian faith of Father, Son and Spirit. This has deepened my thankfulness for the cross of Christ.

God, being “all knowing” knew at the moment He created the world, that it would require coming to earth and dying upon the cross!

I wonder if Jesus, having been beaten and bruised, forced to carry the cross, felt the grain of the wood against the flesh of His back and recalled the third day of creation when He created the vegetation and the tree. I wonder if as He laid on the cross being prepared by the soldiers, He felt the tip of the iron nail on His hand and recalled the day He placed iron ore in the ground knowing that humanity would use it and develop it for tools of usefulness.

I wonder if He looked into the eyes of the soldier with the hammer and noticed the shoulder muscles flexing as the hammer was raised and slammed down, remembering the day He formed mankind, knowing one day the humanity He created would walk away from Him and need to have an opportunity to come back. The only way was through a sacrifice. Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrated His own love

for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. In verse 10 it says that we are God’s enemies until the time of being reconciled by putting our hope of salvation in Him. Heavy words, but they required a heavy price. A price Christ was not only willing but ‘joyed’ (Hebrews 12:2) to pay if it meant that people could be restored into right relationship with their creator.

John in Revelations 1:18 records the words of the resurrected Jesus. “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and hades.”

Christ was not only the all sufficient sacrifice, but is alive forever more. Let us call upon Him and experience the abundant life He offers; resurrected life and life eternal!

Eleanor Lynn McWhinnie She became an excellent cook, and her later social life was rich, entertaining friends and family for many years. Ellie shared her cooking skills particularly often with those who were alone during the holidays and special occasions.

As an adult, Ellie took formal cook’s training through Selkirk College and later worked as an LPN, primarily in Palliative Care.

She loved music and had an extensive music collection.

Ellie especially loved to listen to piano music and played the ute. She loved to dance and went out often to support the many musicians she knew. Writing, reading, playing cribbage,and gardening were also favorite pastimes.

Ellie always felt it was important to keep up to date on global and local news. She was passionate about numerous social issues - the environment, animal rights, Indigenous rights, land and wildlife conservation and the health care system.

Ellie held a special place in her heart for the homeless and hurting folk in her community.

It was common for her to drop whatever she was doing to lend a hand, or oer emotional support and encouragement to her many friends over the decades.

Ellie will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her eldest brother David McWhinnie (Catherine), and nephews Thomas and Scott McWhinnie, all of Whitehorse, YT. A memorial celebrating her life will be held at a later date, to be announced.

With deep sadness we mourn the passing of our beloved Eleanor Lynn McWhinnie, following a brief illness and hospitalization.

She was released from her longstanding pains and challenges on March 11, 2020.

Eleanor or “Ellie� as she was fondly known by her many friends and acquaintances, was born April 28 1960 in Edmonton, Alberta, and raised in Sherwood Park, just outside of Edmonton.

Sherwood Park was a very small community in her early years.

Friends and neighbours always looked out for each other when Ellie was growing up, and everyone helped out, sharing whatever they had whenever they could, which became a lifelong trait of hers.

Ellie was predeceased by many who were near and dear to her, including her parents Stanley and Jean McWhinnie, a brother, Glenn McWhinnie, her spouse “Bird� (Daniel Vincent) Price, and her life-long friend and cousin Bill Marshall.

Despite all the health and other burdens Ellie endured over the years, she was a most giving, kind-hearted, sentimental, and generous soul.

Eleanor tackled life’s problems with unfailing optimism and cheer when many others would have given up long before.

In spite of everything, Ellie rarely felt hard done by. She would take on things as they came and was always grateful for all that she had.

After sharing news of some diďŹƒcult situation with those close to her, Ellie would most often end the conversation with: “Other than that, Life is Goodâ€?

Ellie loved animals,and had several dogs and cats over the years.

Her cat “Miss Kitty� lived to be 27 years old, but her favorite was a German Shepherd named “Laddie�.

Eleanor’s only stellar failure with animals occurred when she tried to adopt a skunk.

Trying to charm it into coming home with her, it all went bad when she tried to pet it. Both she and Laddie clearly evidenced what happened next, and the family could smell them coming home a long way o.

Ellie’s social life growing up involved many neighbourhood and family get-togethers.

Crash causes Slocan Valley power outage

A single vehicle collision was the cause of a power outage that affected residents in the Slocan Valley last Thursday afternoon.

Highway 6 was closed for more than three hours near Cunningham Road at Crescent Valley after a truck collided with at least one hydro pole.

Shortly after 2 p.m. a transport truck carrying lumber headed for Alberta clipped the soft shoulder of Highway 6 causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The

vehicle came to rest blocking both lanes of the highway.

The driver of the Arrow Transportation truck was shaken up, but uninjured. His load however, was scattered across the highway.

Fire, police, Ministry of Transportation and FortisBC trucks responded to the scene.

Fortis BC said the power outage affected about 1,000 customers in Slocan Park and Crescent Valley.

Power was restored to most properties around 3:30 p.m., but some properties remained in the dark until after 8 p.m.
