VALLEY NEWS COVID-19 arrives in Interior Health Region

By Dauna Ditson with files from Signe Olynyk dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com Dr. Bonnie Henry, B.C.’s provincial health officer, said on Tuesday, March 17 that there are now seven reported cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the Interior Health region and 186 in the province. Numbers will likely increase across the province as test results continue to come in, she said.

The numbers are only reflective of those who have been tested, not those with moderate symptoms who are managing their illness at home.

Also on March 17, the Province delared a public health emergency and cancelled school indefinitely for elementary and secondary students.

While parliament is suspended for at least five weeks, MP Rob Morrison has extra time home in his riding.

“We need to be really careful,” he said. “It’s a good practice to take all the precautions you can, right now, everything.”

He recommends that people be vigilant about washing their hands, get out of the habit of shaking hands (elbow bump, if you must) and stay a meter or two away from others. Anyone who is sick should absolutely not visit the elderly or those with weakened immune systems. He also advises watching out for symptoms including a throat itch, a dry cough and shortness of breath.

“If you think you have it, make sure you don’t go into a hospital or a walk-in clinic.

Make sure you self-quarantine and phone 811 ... The people at 811, they know exactly what they’re doing, and they’ll come out and they’ll test and they’ll make sure that you’re looked after,” he said. “They don’t want you to go out and about and possibly infect other people.”

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) provided an update saying that they are finalizing a pandemic response plan “so that we are proactive and prepared should the spread of the virus escalate into sustained community transmission. The focus of the plan is on minimizing risk to RDEK employees and the public while ensuring critical local government services are maintained.”

The Columbia Valley Rockies will not get to continue their playoff run. Panorama Mountain Resort and Fairmont Hot Springs Resport have closed as the pandemic spreads. Seniors’ events, shows and all kinds of activities, even at the libraries, have been cancelled or postponed indefinitely.

“Whatever we talk about now won’t matter even in an hour from now because that’s how rapidly things are changing,” said Steve Paccagnan, Panorama’s president and CEO.

“There definitely is some impact to the business but the most important thing is it’s the right thing to do,” he said. “We’re dealing with things in a professional and rational way and relying on the great resources of our federal and provincial and regional governments and we’ve got a very strong team of people that are working collectively together to deal with the situation as it comes.”

Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL) cancelled all remaining playoff games as the Rockies were battling the Dynamiters for first place. Kimberley took the first two games of the playoff round that was intended to be a best-of-seven series, winning 4-3 on March 9 and 3-0 on March 10 in their arena.

The Village of Radium Hot Springs is following guidelines provided by medical officials and the Province’s emergency preparedness plan.

“There have been events and hotel rooms (in Radium) that have been cancelled because of the outbreak,” said mayor Clara Reinhardt.

While she was looking forward to hosting the 2020 convention for the Association of Kootenay and Boundary Local Governments (AKBLG) next month, the convention has been cancelled.

“We are disappointed because it was an opportunity to showcase Radium, but it is a good decision for the safety of everyone,” said Reinhardt.

For the short term, a committee is being established to ensure that time-sensitive AKBLG items can still be addressed.

Invermere mayor Al Miller said the District is taking advice from health officials and that the RDEK will be the community’s go-to source for emergency preparedness as needed.

“My main concern at this point is for people to not panic and listen to our qualified medical experts. Wash your hands lots, stay upbeat and communicate with others positively as some people might be more fearful due to their own health and/or mental well-being. We will get through this,” he said.

The Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce anticipates that there may be a need for delivery drivers to take supplies to those in need.

A message from the Chamber said: “It is imperative that our community rallies together during this time, and we strongly encourage everyone to support local business as much as possible.”

The Chamber recommends that businesses offer “compassionate and flexible cancellation policies,” take care of staff and, if possible, allow employees to work from home.

Invermere council discusses Fairmont airport funding

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Questions over the Regional District of East Kootenay’s decision to fund the Fairmont Hot Springs airport arose during last week’s Invermere council meeting.

Invermere council had already been approached by the Columbia Valley Airport Society for funding, which council members had declined, saying it was instead a regional matter. The RDEK board of directors, as reported in last week’s Pioneer, committed during their Friday, March 6 meeting to one-year funding of $60,000 to the airport society, subject to a lengthy list of conditions.

During Invermere council’s Tuesday, March 10 meeting, councillors sought more details on the deal from Invermere mayor (and Invermere’s RDEK board member) Al Miller.

“I just wonder what it is that we the public taxpayers are buying with that $60,000?” asked councillor Gerry Taft.

Miller indicated it was not a decision the RDEK board made lightly, and responded to Taft’s query by saying that the conditions attached to the funding are detailed (see last week’s Pioneer for the full rundown), require a sound business plan, and that the society would need to make good on “deliverables” in that plan if it is to get funding beyond the one-year $60,000.

This past week, March 9 through March 15, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 46 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.

On Wednesday, March 11, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a suspicious person at Panorama Mountain Resort. A resident reported an adult male was impersonating maintenance staff and trying to gain entry to rental units. The male was described as a Caucasian male in his late 40s to 50s with black hair and a beard. There was no information to suggest he actually gained entry into any units.

On Wednesday, March 11, at about 11:40 p.m. an officer was conducting patrols on Highway Loop Road near the Invermere airport and conducted a traffic stop with a Hyundai Sonata. The driver was discovered to be a Canada-wide prohibited driver. The driver was arrested for prohibited driving and released on conditions to appear in court at a later date.

On Thursday, March 12, a resident of Windermere reported someone had cut the wires to a streetlight in the Highlands complex on Upper Lakeview Road in Windermere. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP. On Friday, March 13, at about 7:30 p.m. an officer was conducting patrols in Canal Flats and conducted a traffic stop with a Chrysler Neon. The lone male driver was unable to produce his driver’s license. The officer conducted checks and discovered the driver was prohibited from driving. The driver was arrested and released to attend court at a later date. His vehicle was impounded for seven days.

On Saturday, March 14, at 7 p.m. Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver on Baillie Grohman Avenue in Canal Flats.

An officer located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. The driver admitted to consuming alcohol and submitted to a breath test. The breath test results confirmed the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was too high and, as a result, the driver was issued a 24hour driving prohibition.

By Dean Midyette Special to the Pioneer The last regular meeting of the Canal Flats council began with an update regarding the pavilion project, with Paul Marcil representing the Canal Flats Community Society. Marcil reminded council that Canadian Timberframes in Golden had been contracted for the project and that the timeline to make final design decisions was tightening as construction must be completed before the grant deadlines expire.

He presented council with two updated designs and asked that council pass a motion approving one of the designs so that the next phase of the project could move forward.

Marcil also informed council that the location for the pavilion in the draft of the Recreation Master Plan (RMP) was soundly rejected by the community society

at their recent Annual General Meeting and asked council to consider an alternate location closer to the arena, civic centre and existing parking. Later in the meeting council approved the Centre Beam design as well as the washroom design but deferred a decision on where the pavilion will be located until an updated RMP could be reviewed.

Council also reviewed almost 20 different designs for updated highway signage and after extensive discussion narrowed the designs to be considered to eight. Council also debated whether to ask for resident feedback on the shortlisted signs.

The debate over whether the signs should be front-lit or back-lit was illuminating.

Council directed staff to ask the contractor to provide updated schematics for final consideration.

Connect with elderly neighbours during COVID-19 crisis Check in on them, by phone call or text, to ensure their needs are being met

By Terry Farrell Black Press The threat of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is impacting lives worldwide, and, although it may not yet have reached your community, you can expect it to in the coming days or weeks.

One vulnerable group that cannot be ignored is the elderly in the community.

Many B.C. communities have a higher-than-average population of seniors, based on the popularity of the province as a retirement destination.

BC Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie said at times such as this, it’s important to ensure everyone has a strong support system – neighbours helping neighbours.

“When the provincial health officer calls on British Columbians to consider what we can we do, obviously taking care of ourselves is number one, but the other thing we can do is reach out to the seniors we know around us and see what extra help they might need right now,” said Mackenzie.

“The impact of COVID-19 could mean that their care worker is under the weather and can’t provide help. It could mean that their adult children who would normally help them aren’t feeling well and can’t help them. It may mean that they really shouldn’t be in crowded situations … somebody else could go do their grocery shopping for them.”

Mackenzie recommends exchanging phone numbers with your neighbours (if you don’t already have them) and keeping in contact with each other via phone or text.

Mackenzie said a crisis like this tends to galvanize communities, and she expects most communities will take the time to rally around each other and get through this pandemic together.

“From my years in homecare, that is the kind of thing we would see. I was in homecare during the blizzard of ’96 here in Victoria, and the way people came together to help each other out at that time was phenomenal. Now that was a different issue, in terms of why there was a crisis. But the effect on seniors being shut in and not getting what they needed … there is the potential of that today.

“We are going to see a lot more seniors needing help with things … so if we are healthy, we should help.”

The society has a lot to figure out before August 14 (the deadline for the conditions to be met),” said Miller, adding that the society had asked for two years of funding, but the RDEK board was only willing to commit to one year of funding.

Taft pressed further, asking if the society will be required to keep statistics on how many flights come in, how many are medical evacuation flights, how many are flights used by the B.C. Wildfire Services, and how many are second home owners flying to their vacation homes.

RDEK directors cited the medi-evac and firefighting flights in their decision to go ahead with the funding.

“I understand that there are medi-evac flights and firefighters landing there, but how many? It would be good to know, if we are committing public funds to the airport,” said Taft, adding he’s heard rumours of landing fees not being scrupulously collected and that “the idea that the public may be subsidizing private jet landings doesn’t sit well with me.”

Miller responded that there were, and still are, many unknowns that the RDEK directors were uncertain about, but that at the same time they recognize that medi-evac and firefighting flights are important, adding that’s why the list of conditions was as long as it was.

“It’s a Catch 22,” said Miller. “Do the (RDEK) directors wish they were put in this situation? Absolutely not.

But a line’s been drawn in the sand and we have to figure out what to do with this asset.”

Councillor Ute Juras asked Miller if he thought all the conditions could be meet by the August 14 deadline, and whether the RDEK would give the funding if some but not all of the conditions were met.

Miller replied that he wasn’t 100 per cent certain, but added that a majority of the RDEK directors had faith that the conditions could be met.

PERSPECTIVE Staying home

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com You know when there’s a pandemic going on and you ask someone to go out into the germy world – to an enclosed space filled with other humans – to do a job for you? I did that on the weekend without thinking it through. It was a poor choice and I regret it. I regretted it even more when news broke that Interior Health had recorded its first COVID-19 positive case.

I’m impressed with how many businesses and event organizers opted to close their doors to the public before they had to. I’m glad Valley Fitness Centre closed while I was deliberating over whether to go for a class. I appreciate that they prevented me and others like me from using their facility and stopped us from potentially spreading illness. I’m also impressed with how well people are sharing the sidewalks and public spaces and spreading themselves out. It’s disappointing that so much fun is cancelled, but thank you to everyone who is doing the cancelling and to everyone who is keeping their distance.

Before the playoffs were cancelled, one of the Columbia Valley Rockies told me he hoped the playoff series would give him the opportunity to shine so brightly that he could move up to a Junior A team. Skiers and snowboarders are also potentially losing the rest of the season, with Panorama Mountain Resort and Fairmont Hot Springs Resort closing down. The Village of Radium Hot Springs, already hurting from the hot pool closures, was eager to bring municipal leaders to town to show them all Radium has to offer. The convention, which was set to take place next month, has been called off. Other local events are being cancelled too, and more are expected to follow as voluntary and mandated measures to stop the pandemic’s spread seem to be tightening by the day.

The more precautions we can take now to protect ourselves, our loved ones, our staff and our community, the safer we will be. As for me, I’m home in a tie-dyed sweatshirt eating all the snacks and trying to get my work done. I’d rather be with you, but I’m going to do my best not to contribute to the problem.

We all have obligations, even those who think their worst-case scenario with COVID-19 is that they’ll feel a little ill before bouncing back. We’re not only individuals, especially not in this gem of a valley. We’re a community, and we belong to each other. We all have obligations because the health of our community, our elderly folks and those whose immune systems are compromised is literally in our perpetually-dirty hands.

(Why, by the way, is it so hard to keep a single pair of hands clean?! As soon as you turn the tap off or open the bathroom door or pick up a pen or push a button on the microwave, they’re dirty again. It puts Lady MacBeth’s hand-washing obsession into perspective.)

Let’s be kind to each other and check up on those who are afraid or medically vulnerable or lonely in quarantine. Be safe and keep on Lady MacBeth-ing.

Trudeau on par with Trump Dear Editor, Arnold Malone’s piece on Trump’s presidency in last week’s paper was interesting, but for unexpected reasons. In particular, his discussion of Trump’s interference with the justice system was well reasoned, but I would like to add a twist to his comment. I would suggest that Trudeau has gone even further in eroding confidence in the impartiality of the justice system.

SNC-Lavalin, a major contributor to the Liberal party, faced a criminal prosecution and, if found guilty, that would have disqualified it from being granted federal contracts. So, Trudeau threatens his attorney general with the loss of her cabinet post unless she agrees to go easy on this corporate friend of the Liberal party. She refuses and is fired. The rule of law, as I understand it, means that politicians must stay entirely outside the judicial process other than their right to appoint those they favour. The administration of justice cannot be compromised by those seeking some political advantage by tampering with that system.

Trudeau, and others in the PMO (Prime Minister’s Office), admitted that they had orchestrated the

application of as much pressure as possible on that minister to bring about the legal result sought by SNC. Apparently, justice be damned. They admitted having obstructed justice in the hope a good offence might prove to be the best defence.

Then there was the injunctive relief granted to the CNR in relation to the rail line blockages. Again, at some political level, enforcement of the injunction was shelved. No one is saying, but that too was likely a decision made at the level of the PMO. So the government, and those charged by law with the enforcement of the injunction, for purely political reasons chose to pretend the court order wasn’t there. I suspect the judge who granted that injunction would have been dismayed to learn that it would be enforced, or not, subject to political expedience. Again the administration of justice takes a critical body shot under Trudeau. It seems clear that Trudeau and those in his office have an abysmal understanding of what the ‘rule of law’ is, or they have no respect whatsoever for the administration of justice or the judiciary. Easily on par with Trump.

LETTERS To our Albertan neighbours Dear Albertans: I am writing to you as one of the physicians in lnvermere B.C. requesting your consideration before you travel between provinces during this difficult period.

Many Albertans have vacation homes or part-time residences and see the Columbia Valley as a wonderful place to escape to. Here in the valley we appreciate all that you contribute to our area and the spirit that you bring with you.

This is a stressful time with the threat of Covid-19 spreading throughout Canada. Closures of schools and recreation facilities and the cancellation of trips planned months in advance, all lead to a desire to find a place to unwind and escape. I would like to request that before you visit the Columbia Valley during this time you consider that we have a small hospital with eight beds. Eight full-time doctors that cover the emergency department, clinics, and hospital in-patients. And yes we only have one ventilator! Our town is small and isolated and our closest Intensive Care Unit will likely be strained with our regional cases. Transport of patients between provinces is difficult at the best of times and moving Covid-19 patients will put many emergency health providers at risk. All of these factors will make it difficult to transport patients to the care they deserve.

During the summer months, winter holidays, and long weekends we are honoured to care for all the Albertans that visit our wonderful valley. During this time of uncertainty I ask that you remain home and do your best to limit the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the illness that comes with it.

Here in Invermere we have a large proportion of senior citizens that are relying on us to keep them safe. I thank you for your consideration and allowing us to focus on giving our local patients the best possible care.

Radium roundabout artwork decision on hold

By Signe Olynyk Special to the Pioneer Hospice receives funding for new programs Michele Neider, executive director for the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley, presented an overview of the work the organization did last year to Radium council on Wednesday, March 11. She updated council on the importance of the volunteers involved, and the current programs being offered.

The three new programs that Hospice will offer include an Anticipatory Grief program, which supports family, caregivers, and friends who are experiencing feelings of grief at the impending loss of a loved one.

A Children and Youth Grief Support program has received two years of funding from the Columbia Basin Trust to train adults on how to support children and youth with the grief process. A 12-week after-school program will be offered once school staff and volunteers have completed this training.

Hospice will also provide workshops to help people understand the importance of funerals and celebration-of-life ceremonies for those who are left behind.

“There is an alerting trend in today’s society to not honour a person after they have passed away,” said a statement released by Neider. “Often one will read in the obituaries (that) ‘on the person’s request’ there will be no memorial (or) ceremony. It is an intrinsic need for human beings to come together to honour those who died.

Without proper mourning, there is no place for those left behind to heal the loss.”

“Council is fully supportive of hospice,” said Radium mayor Clara Reinhardt.

Parking problems persist Among other things, Radium Hot Springs is a mill town, a tourist town, and home to a population of just over 700 people. Competition for parking with local residents, visitors, local business and logging trucks continues. Council has received a letter from a local resident who is frustrated by the noise caused by some of the large trucks that park in the commercial parking lot on St. Mary’s Street. Solid support for solid waste Mayor Reinhardt supports the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Solid Waste Management Plan.

“It is a thorough report and provides guidelines for 5-10 years,” she said. “It is a very tangible action plan.”

The plan has been developed based on input received from the RDEK’s Advisory Committee, public engagement, RDEK staff and board members, as well as work carried out by consultant firms over the past two and a half years.

According to the plan released earlier this year, it is determined that our community contributes a larger amount of landfill waste than the provincial average. The waste disposal rate in the RDEK was determined to be 585 kg per person, whereas the provincial average is 506 kg per person.

The Province has set a goal of reducing the provincial waste disposal rate to 400 kg per person by the year 2030. To be in compliance, the community as a whole

needs to significantly reduce the amount of garbage being sent to our landfills. Recycling, reusing and reducing our garbage are all strategies to continue, while expanding disposal options (wood waste, scrap metal, composting organics, etc.) will be explored further in consultation with all involved parties.

Round and round the roundabout The brakes were recently put on the decision to move forward with artwork for the roundabout planned to replace the four-way stop in Radium.

“It was a good decision to stop,” said Reinhardt.

Council reviewed the various ideas proposed and opted not to move forward with any of the options for the time being. Council wants to carefully consider the cost and ensure the budget is solid and that the best decision is made for the artwork or display that appears in the roundabout.

Tara Whittick’s grade 3/4 class at Windermere Elementary School is part classroom and part art gallery today as her team of artists in residence gather around their collaborative piece, Mr. Fox. Though antsy and eager to speak, the artists sit in silence, hands raised, waiting for a turn to share about their masterpiece.

What they say is that Mr. Fox was five years and three days in the making. Over the span of five years, a nurse at the hospital stockpiled lids from pill bottles and other bottle caps. In three days, Whittick’s students gluegunned the pile of plastic waste into art.

First they sorted the lids by colour – blue, white, orange, green, brown and grey – and then got to gluing.

Nicholas says he and his cohort started with the sky and worked their way down, adding clouds along the way.

They filled in an outline of their fox’s body with orange lids, taking care to give him an extra-fluffy tail and stacking up lids to give the work a three-dimensional effect.

“I liked building the fox with the buttons. We looked for different sizes that would work best,” one of the artists says.

The artists raced against time to finish their piece and submit it to the valley’s Art from the Heart ... Goes Wild! competition based on animals from the East Kootenay.

To make matters more challenging, one day most of the grade four artists were away on another assignment, leaving the grade three creators to do their best.

Sawyer was keenly aware of the time crunch.

“I felt frustrated because I burned myself a little bit,” he says, adding that he sustained three or four glue-gun burns as he raced the clock. “It’s worth it because we finished it in time ... It looks really cool.”

The artists were thrilled when they won the Art from the Heart competition. One says it will be neat for himself and his peers to reflect on this victory much later in their lives – like when they reach grade seven.

“I feel proud and happy that we worked together and we won the prize,” one artist says. Another adds: “we all worked on it together and we did it as a team.”

Alex says looking at the piece makes her think of collaboration. “You do less when there are more (helpers),” she says.

Eli says: “I’ve never done an art project with the whole class working on the same thing. With our class, I’m not surprised that we pulled it off.”

Another artist says Mr. Fox makes her think of all the patients the medicine caps represent.

“That’s how many people might have felt better,” she says.

Nicholas hopes Mr. Fox: inspires people to protect the planet, makes them think about how hard the nurse worked to collect the lids, and encourages them to make their own art projects the next time they find a piece of trash.

Manny back on skis, targeting Beijing Olympics

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Invermere’s local alpine ski star Manny Osborne-Paradise is back on the slopes, making turns with his daughter Sloane on the bunny hill at Panorama Mountain Resort.

Sure, he’s just lapping the carpet and poma runs with three-year-old Sloane, steering clear of the chair lift for now, but these are the first turns the 11-time World Cup skier and four-time Olympian has made on snow since a devastating crash into hillside safety nets during a World Cup training run in Lake Louise in November 2018.

That crash shattered Manny’s tibia and fibula dramatically enough that many assumed it was a career-ending crash. Some thought he’d never ski again, that indeed he might even lose his leg. The tibia fracture was a 5 out of 6 on the Schatzker scale (a six is typically associated with quite literally being run over by a vehicle) and there were complications from compartment syndrome, which saw Manny’s leg swell grotesquely due to the trauma of the crash and which doctors had to constantly cut to let it bleed out, lest the pressure get too much. “It (compartment syndrome) is actually one of the easiest ways to lose a limb,” Manny told the Pioneer.

But just 15 months, 10 surgeries (three major and seven minor), more than a dozen screws, a few titanium plates, part of a new hip hone, and a bit of bone cement later, Manny has set his sights on skiing in the 2022 Beijing Olympics, his fifth Olympics, a comeback that some commentators say would be among the greatest ever in the sport, on par with Herman Maier’s return from a near-fatal motorcycle accident in 2001 and Brian Stemmle’s recovery from a horrific and almost-life ending crash during a 1989 race.

The last of Manny’s 10 surgeries, in December, was supposed to just involve removing a screw, but the doctors realized that Manny’s meniscus was not attached to the knee they had constructed for him and began to work on that immediately.

“It was a bit of shock,” said Manny, adding it definitely set his recovery back. Frustrating to be certain, since he felt he was moving forward with the healing process well in the fall, but Manny is taking it in stride and keeping a positive attitude.

“It was back to being on crutches for most of January. You have to roll with it and adapt. With any injury, there are often a couple steps forward and then a couple steps back. Obviously I wish it (getting back on skis) had gone a bit faster, but you always wish that,” he said. “It’s all part of the process. I’m in much less pain now.”

With his bones now mostly healed, Manny is working on getting his muscle mass and strength back up to within 10 per cent left-to-right, sticking vigilantly to his workout routine, and even doing some cross-training on skates. (“Edges are edges, whether they’re on skates or skis, and it’s nice to finally be doing some edge work, even if it’s on skates instead of skis,” he said of the cross-training.)

And for the time being, skiing in any shape or form is fantastic, according to Manny.

“It’s been a long time since the injury. It’s really great to be on the snow, taking it easy and enjoying the time with family,” he said. “A lot of people around me, who are medical professionals, thought that (crash) might be it for me for racing. But at no point did my Alpine Canada surgeon second guess that I would be able to get back on the snow. And that belief helps, him knowing what is possible in terms of recovery. He’s like the general that led the medical troops. You kind of feed on that.”

Even with that, recovery from an injury like Manny’s crash is not easy, and it’s an effort Manny takes very seriously.

“It’s my job to come back. It’s been a year and a half of doing everything I can, working, grinding, and pushing to come back,” he said.

In the not-too-distant future Manny and his wife Lana will be following two little skiers down the slopes; Lana is pregnant and they are expecting their second child to arrive in about a month’s time.

“I’m glad to be part of Sloane learning to ski. Skiing is my life, and it’s great to be able to share that with your kids. Of course I am happy to support my kids in whatever they pursue, no matter what it is. As a parent, you want to open your kids’ eyes to every sport and activity that their heart desires and then let them pick their own path,” said Manny, before adding with a chuckle that “well yes, if they do grow up to ski that opens up the possibility of family ski trip vacations in the future. And that would be really fun.”

What’s your story?

By Signe Olynyk Special to the Pioneer The lights are dimmed. The candles are lit. There are logs burning in the fireplace on the TV screens. And everyone sits in suspense-filled silence listening intently to the figure on stage. Wait a minute … isn’t this a bar?

Something surprising and wonderful is happening at the Horsethief Creek Pub and Eatery in Radium Hot Springs. People are telling stories – and if you haven’t attended before, you are in for a very special evening.

The pub is legendary. It is literally named after a thief who stole a horse, and then drowned in the creek while escaping. And while this story is exciting, there are new and equally-exciting stories being created at each storytelling event.

Mike Gray, owner of the iconic pub, grew up listening to CBC’s beloved Stuart MacLean tell stories about Dave, Morley, and all the characters on the Vinyl Café.

Sundays were sacred times when he would gather around the radio, or turn up the volume in his jeep to listen.

Whether with family, friends or on his own, the stories were heartwarming and always made his day a little bit brighter.

More recently, Gray discovered a podcast while travelling called ‘The Moth’. On the show, mostly ‘everyday people’ would tell true life stories in five minutes or less, live on stage and without notes.

“I believed storytelling was for professionals,” said Gray. “I thought, I could never do that!”

But Gray couldn’t let go of the idea, and he thought an evening of storytelling might be something that the community would embrace. He had a venue. He just needed someone with expertise to help storytellers develop their stories. He needed Maria Kliavkoff.

Storytellers unite!

With a masters in theatre directing and a background working off-broadway in New York, Radium Hot Springs author Maria Kliavkoff was the perfect facilitator to lead a storytellers’ workshop. She also has an undergrad degree in psychology and theatre arts, and had just launched her book on grief, Healthy Mourning, Happy Loving. The appealing blend of psychology, storytelling, and working with others to help them tell their stories was an irresistible leap of faith for her, and a call to action she could not ignore.

“I love helping others to tell their stories,” said Kliavkoff. “When we share our stories, we all connect on our human journeys. By understanding each other, we better understand ourselves.”

At the first event held in December, Beginning New Traditions was an appropriate first theme for the Christmas season. Stories From The Heart was the second storytelling night, held just before Valentine’s Day. Audiences were treated to stories about Boomer The Dog, a local canine who was trampled by a deer and presumed dead, and about how a personal development workshop saved a local woman from suicide.

We learned what the colour “sky blue pink” looks like, and about a grandmother’s gift to a young girl whose family didn’t celebrate Christmas.

FAITH God’s heart, God’s love Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian fellowship Jesus came, preaching the Gospel, healing the broken hearted, setting the captives free, healing the blind, setting free those that were oppressed, and He proclaimed the acceptable year of the Lord. He healed all that were sick. Just as He said He would in Luke 4:18-19.

Towards the end of His earthly ministry, Jesus empowered His disciples, and, I believe, all that would profess Jesus Christ as their Lord, to carry on, to make a difference in the world, to reach out and show God’s love. Jesus tells us in John 14:12-14: “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my

name, I will do it.”

In a few weeks, we celebrate Easter, a time we set aside to remember the betrayal and crucifixion of Jesus.

But it doesn’t end here; we know the rest of the story.

On Sunday, resurrection day, we remember that He rose defeating sin, sickness, death, and everything else the enemy stands for. And it didn’t end there. In Mark 16:19 we read where Jesus ascends to God’s right hand, where He is seated, making intercession for us.

Jesus left us with a commission, it is what we call the great commission, and in it He is telling us to go and turn our world upside down for His sake. In Mark 16:15-18 we read: “And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.’”

This is what I believe: no matter what the enemy, or the world, throws at us, God will make a way, through the Lord Jesus Christ. He will make a way, when there seems to be no other way.

A rare occurrence

This one was about four metres in circumference, as opposed to a 40 metre one reported in Kamloops.

The World Day of Prayer is an annual event held the first weekend in March.

It is a global ecumenical movement led by Christian women joining in prayer and action for peace and justice. The prayer/meditation this year was written by the women of Zimbabwe.

Services in the Columbia Valley were hosted at the Radium Christian Fellowship and the Catholic Church in Invermere. Based on the theme taken from scripture: ‘Rise! Take Your Mat and Walk,’ Invermere participants explored the challenges we face on a daily basis. In mov-

ing beyond comfort zones, the group was encouraged to make changes by reaching out, taking small steps, setting goals, praying daily and expressing gratitude.

Although women have traditionally organized the World Day of Prayer, a growing number of men are participating.

Funds raised with offerings are distributed to assist women raising children, those who live on the margins, victims of abuse, trafficking, drug addiction and a variety of social injustices.

The 2021 service is being prepared by the women of Vanuatu (formerly New Hebrides), a chain of islands in the South Pacific.

New boutique music festival to launch in Spillimacheen

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Columbia Valley’s already stellar lineup of summer music festivals is about to get a little bit brighter this year, with a brand new boutique music and arts festival ready to launch in Spillimacheen this June.

The inaugural NewtFest is set for Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13 at the Bugaboo Sisters Homestead near Spillimacheen, and will be headlined by two-time Juno Award nominee Chad VanGaalen.

“Our family is relatively new in the valley, we’ve been here five years, and as we’ve gotten to know the community, we’ve realized Spilli has a history of great events,” said organizer Patty Derbyshire. “We wanted to add to that by creating an event that is intimate, fun and brings a sense of community to Spillimacheen. We have a background producing music in Calgary, so a music and arts festival was a natural fit.”

The festival will also include the Newt Golf Art Invitational Putt Putt Tournament, Columbia River wetlands explorations, indigo dye festival scarf-making, whirligig workshops, and speculative fiction writing and zine production at one of the Columbia Valley’s oldest post offices.

“We looked up and down the valley and saw how many great music and arts festivals and events there are throughout the summer,” said Derbyshire. “As the new kids on the block, we want to respect those already established events, and add to the arts and culture scene, instead of competing. That’s why we chose mid-June.”

Local music lovers can now get their festival fill from one end of the valley to the other, month by month, in a pleasing north-to-south geographically sequential order, starting with NewtFest in Spillimacheen in June, followed by the Steamboat Mountain Music Fest in early July, Radium’s Music on Main throughout the summer, and wrapping up with the Invermere Music Fest and Canal Flats-based Flats Fest in mid-to-late August.

Derbyshire and fellow organizers were keen to have more than music at the festival because, as she said “we want to bring forward all wonderful kinds of creative people we have in the valley.”

The vision for the Putt Putt Golf Tourney, for instance, includes having local artists and businesses create sculptures at each hole on the (former) five-acre ghost town at the homestead, which includes a 1950s post office, filling station, the old Sinclair cabin, a farmhouse, and a vintage trailer park.

The slogan for the festival emphasizes its family friendly, cozy vibe: “Cute, tiny, and hangin’ in the wetlands.”

So how did NewtFest organizers manage to score folk-tinged indie rocker Chad VanGaalen as a headliner?

“We reached out to him and as it turns out, we really didn’t have to pitch that hard,” said Derbyshire. “The small and cozy thing really sold Chad. It’s a good match in terms of Chad’s personality and the kind of shows he likes to do. Big studios and smelly bars are just not a part of who he is and how he performs.”

Other musicians playing at the festival include the fun-loving Jonnor (from Spillimacheen), rambunctious Morri (Golden), ethereal Selci (Winnipeg) and late night dance sets of Italia disco, alt pop, and German new wave on the Friday night, and on the Saturday night the Fawns (from Lethbridge) and Cold Water (Calgary).

“We’re all about great music, food, and ‘framily’ (i.e. friends who are as close as family). We have this amazing venue ... well it’s a whole darn ghost town brought back to life now, and we couldn’t think of a better place ‘What’s your story?’ from page 15 …

We’ve heard stories about what to do with a wedding ring after a divorce, about making the Columbia Valley home when your family is far away, and about the heart-stopping magic of being part of a live audience at a concert in Frankfurt, Germany. We’ve shared stories about the value of a vacation with loved ones when travel plans change, communicating with others – even when we don’t know each other’s language – and other inspiring stories about taking chances, falling in love, and picking up hitchhikers.

The storytellers live amongst us, right here in our community. Through their stories, we grow a bit closer and now we know each other just a little bit more.

I (Signe Olynyk) will think of Maria and her family when I hear Silent Night. And I’ll smile when I see a jeep and think of Mike and his grandma. I’ll think of Kim when I’m asked to imagine something in my mind, and be grateful that I can. I’ll think of Anne and her family when I see a sunset. We are no longer strangers who pass one another at the grocery store or post office. We are now a community, and friends.

All storytellers must first participate in a workshop, hosted by the Horsethief, to learn how to structure their stories. Anyone can participate at no cost.

Only 150 tickets will be sold for the festival and, as Patty Derbyshire told the Pioneer, “when they’re gone, they’re gone. We have a real commitment to staying intimate. Don’t wait too long to get them (the tickets).”

In response to coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns, Derbyshire said “as of this moment we’re going to hold steady. Our attendance from the outset was capped at 150 folks based on the intimacy we set out to create for our artists and guests at the festival. That said, we Newts are a tough lot but we’ll never put our peeps in peril. So, save the date and stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks and months.”

Passes are on sale for the weekend, a day, or a show.

Weekend all-in passes cost $199, family day passes $99, individual day passes $79, and student passes $39. Creative workshops cost between $29 and $39 depending on the workshop, the art golf tournament is free, and weekend camping is $40.

“I think this is a really important and special thing that Mike, Maria, and the storytellers are doing for the community,” said me. “It is creating a community and bringing us all closer together.”

“I have never felt so nervous about any event we have ever held at the pub,” said Gray. “Would the stories hold an audience? Would anyone show up? How would audiences respond?”

To make the storytellers as comfortable as possible, he closes the pub to the public. It is held as a special event so that there are no distractions for the storytellers or the audience.

As a storyteller, I was extremely nervous, but I also felt very supported by the audience, my fellow storytellers, the Horsethief staff, and especially Gray and Kliavkoff. For me, it was inadvertently a night of personal growth, and healing, by sharing and connecting with others.

“After the first show, we doubled the audience,” said Gray. While the March 24 event was expected to sell out, it had to be cancelled. Gray anticipates holding the next workshop on April 23 with the next storytelling event on April 28.

“It’s tentatively planned as much as anything is planned right now,” he said, with a wry laugh.
