By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Columbia Valley Centre was packed with job seekers and those wanting to snap them up on Thursday, February 20 at the inaugural Job and Entrepreneur Fair.

Employers dressed their best and attempted to lure prospective employees to their booths with big smiles, snacks, candy and displays with golf clubs and tubes for pulling riders behind boats.

Justine Swindell came armed with a dozen resumes as she sought a future match.

While she’s currently taking office administration at the College of the Rockies, she was “gauging what’s out there” to determine where she’d like to work when she completes her education.

“It was really valuable,” she said. “You just ... introduce yourself as much as possible and hand out your resume.”

Eden Yesh, an event organizer with WorkBC Employment Services Society, said he was impressed with how many businesses participated, the number of eager job seekers who came through the doors, and how the event essentially filled the Columbia Valley Centre, the “biggest space available.” He estimated that around 40 employers and organizations that offer services for entrepreneurs were represented at the fair and that close to 120 candidates scoped out the opportunities available to them.

to have some conversations,” Yesh said.

While all job seekers were invited to attend regardless of where they call home, only valley employers were allowed to participate in order to keep local talent in the community.

Fire claims Fairmont home and its contents

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com A house in Fairmont went up in flames around 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18.

No one was around at the time of the fire, which raged inside the house until the unsuspecting owner went to let himself in.

“One of the owners came to the house and opened the door and it kind of flashed over on him. He didn’t realize it was burning inside,” said Jim Miller, fire chief for the Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Services.

“It wasn’t fully engulfed until he opened the door, and then she exploded.”

Fifteen firefighters from the Fairmont and Windermere departments responded and had the fire contained within half an hour. Even so, Miller said it was too late for the “very, very nice” two-story house at 5143 Wilder Loop Road, which was made of cedar inside and outside, including the roof.

The home and its contents were completely destroyed, although crews were able to salvage a car, motorcycle, skidoo equipment and chainsaws from the garage.

Crews did “a very good job. They knocked it down really quick,” he said. “It went well. We saved what we could and (had) no problems with (fire spreading to) the neighbours. About the best you could ask for when something’s fully engulfed.”

Miller said he and the owners’ insurance provider are continuing their investigations into the fire and its origin, although nothing is suspicious about the blaze.

“Nobody was here when it happened. Everybody went to work early in the morning and everything was fine when they left and it wasn’t when they came home,” he said.

Crews stayed onsite until 3 a.m. and returned later in the morning “just to keep it at bay,” he said.

A media update from the Regional District of East Kootenay said: “Although the home is a total loss, the crew did an exceptional job of keeping the flames isolated to the structure involved and away from the trees and neighbouring houses.”

On Monday, February 17 at about 3 p.m. an officer was conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park when he observed a vehicle following other traffic dangerously close. The officer conducted a traffic stop. While speaking with the driver, he detected an odour of liquor. The driver submitted to a breath demand and blew two fails. As a result, the driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

On Tuesday, February 18 at about 11 p.m. Columbia Valley RCMP were advised that two men had gotten their vehicles stuck near Dogleg Lake and were going to walk back to the main road. An RCMP officer attended the area and provided the men a ride back to Radium Hot Springs. Neither of the men were injured.

On Wednesday, February 19 an Invermere resident reported falling victim to a scam. The individual received a phone call from a person who claimed his Social Insurance Number and bank accounts had been compromised and he was directed to purchase Google Play cards in order to get a new SIN. The caller had spoofed the Columbia Valley RCMP phone number and told the individual he would be arrested if he did not follow the instructions.

The caller purchased $950 worth of Google Play cards

and provided the information to the caller.

Fortunately, the victim did not provide any personal information to the caller. Police are reminding residents that legitimate agencies do not accept prepaid gift cards in lieu of payment.

On Friday, February 21 at 10:55 a.m. police responded to a two vehicle collision near Windermere Loop Road in Windermere. A commercial transport truck and trailer reportedly struck a Dodge Ram pickup after the commercial transport trailer crossed into the oncoming lane. No injuries were reported. The driver of the commercial transport truck was issued a violation ticket for failing to keep right and failing to maintain an accurate log book.

On Saturday, February 22 at 6:20 p.m. the owner of a black Jeep Wrangler with B.C. license plate FA518C reported the theft of his Jeep. The owner said he had parked his Jeep at a business on Arrow Road in Invermere and left the keys in the ignition while he went inside. When he returned about four minutes later his Jeep was gone.

Police continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP or Crimestoppers.

On Saturday, February 22 at about 11:20 p.m. police received a report of an intoxicated male in downtown Invermere. Police located the intoxicated male near 10th Avenue and 13th Street. The male was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and, after being assessed by paramedics, the male was transported to cells. Officers were concerned about the individual’s ability to care for himself so he was held in cells until he was sober. Upon his release, the male was served a violation ticket for being intoxicated in a public place.

A regular meeting of the Canal Flats council was held on Monday, February 10. A large portion of the meeting was dedicated to two presentations, the first dealing with a proposed childcare centre and the second covering progress on the planning of the Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan.

According to presenter Pamela Wallberg, currently there are no licensed childcare facilities in the village, leaving parents to find spaces in neighbouring communities or to arrange unlicensed care. In addition, vulnerability of children in the village is increasing due in part to a lack of pre-school and out-of-school childcare. Provincial funding is currently being made available for municipalities to build childcare facilities. Wallberg also noted that 16 per cent of licensed childcare spaces in the valley are

sitting empty due to a labour shortage and that an aggressive strategy will be required to secure construction grants and staff the facility with trained educators.

A Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan is a requirement for most recreational grants and for setting development fees. Fraser Blyth and Jason Jones presented council with a short presentation on its evolution, which included an inventory of recreational infrastructure in and around the village as well as two proposals for land use around the current civic centre and arena. The 20year vision for this parcel includes the addition of tennis and pickle ball courts, skateboard and basketball facilities, a three hole disc golf course, a splash park and a municipal campground. During the hour of questions that followed, the location of the new pavilion being constructed this year was discussed but not finalized. Council also noted that residents had indicated a desire for a dog park and asked that one be included in the final plan.

RDEK financial plan up for public comment The Regional District of the East Kootenay (RDEK) is set to adopt a new five-year financial plan but is seeking public input first.

The plan details how the RDEK will spent some $33.9 million in operating expenses and $12.5 million in capital expenses in 2020 on the more than 100 services run by the regional government body. Public comments on the plan are being accepted until noon on Monday, March 2.

“The RDEK board has completed its first review of the financial plan; however, the work on the plan is certainly far from complete,” said RDEK board chair Rob Gay in a press release. “Staff will continue to meet with directors, other municipalities, and various commissions over the coming weeks and a public comment period will be open until the first Monday in March.”

The operating expenses for 2020 are 4.4 per cent higher than in 2019. The extra cost entails a 4.9 per cent tax increase (which will roughly work out to an additional $12 or so in tax on an average $350,000 home).

Several of the major projects with big price tags outlined in the capital and operating expenses in the five-year plan are here in the Columbia Valley, including finally

connecting the Windermere water system to the new water treatment plant and upgrading the distribution system (which comes with a $4.5 million price tag), the Timber Ridge/Eastside water system looping project (almost $1.9 million with a further nearly $300,000 in operating costs), and completing phase two of the Fairmont flood and debris control project and related upgrades in Cold Spring Creek ($220,000).

There are also phase one of the regional organics composting project ($298,000), two new water tenders – one for the Fairmont fire department and one for the Windermere fire department ($353,000 each; $706,000 total) – a new fire engine for the Edgewater fire department ($433,000), replacing the chiller in the Canal Flats arena ($125,000), the Fairmont transfer station access road ($48,500), and cover material for the Columbia Valley solid waste program ($100,000).

“As a board, our focus is always on finding a responsible balance between providing quality services to our residents and minimizing the tax impacts. It is often a balancing act and we feel we have achieved a fair balance with this plan,” said Gay. “The plan will come back before the board next month and we encourage people to let us know their thoughts through the public comment period.”

Copies of the plan and comment forms are available on engage.rdek.bc.ca/budget and through RDEK’s Cranbrook and Invermere offices. The five year financial plan will likely be adopted during the RDEK board’s Friday, March 6 meeting.

Bailey Yeats from Copper Point Resort said the fair was “amazing” and that “the people that are looking for jobs are such good candidates.”

With 40 to 50 positions to fill, most of which are summer roles in housekeeping or food services, the event gave her team the opportunity to stockpile resumes and potentially fill some vacancies.

Over at the Home Hardware booth, staff were so enthusiastic about one candidate that they invited him to the back of the hall to join them for a sit-down interview.

Jesse Simpkins, who was left to manage the booth, said she was impressed with that particular candidate and with the job fair in general.

“It’s been a hard year (for employers),” she said. “People can’t move here right now ... We can’t hire them because they can’t find a place to stay.”

But the job fair is addressing that challenge by matching prospective employees who already live in the valley with the opportunities available here.

Simpkins said her team was inclined to extend offers to two or three of the candidates who approached their booth and that she hopes those job seekers will soon join her on staff.

Blooming World Cannabis may have also found its match. Marjorie Fournier flipped through the eight resumes she collected at the event and said with a grin: “there’s one that we really like.”

Emma Pattinson, from Interior Health, was almost giddy as she approached Pete Bourke, executive director of the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce,

with good news.

“We may have a new recruit,” she announced. “I may have just hired a casual.”

Like the employers, Bourke said job seekers were excited about their potential matches, adding that one of the objectives behind the fair was “to make sure people were aware of what’s available to them in the valley.”

Penny Powers, who is hiring for up to seven positions with Columbia River Paddle, said the job fair was “definitely productive” and that candidates who might not have considered her business now have her paddling and guiding opportunities on their radars.

Shannon McGinty, Lake Windermere Ambassador program coordinator, was also thrilled with the interest she got from job seekers visiting her booth. She is preparing to go on maternity leave and is looking to fill her own role. When her position was first posted she had a “freak out” about how few applications were coming in and said she worried that “no one wants my job.” But then applications began piling in. In addition to gathering resumes at the fair, she recruited potential volunteers.

Midway through the fair, organizers weren’t aware of how many job opportunities employers had brought with them or how many offers may come as a result, but they intend to survey participating businesses and service providers.

Bourke said the fair – which was offered through a partnership between the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce, WorkBC Employment Services Society, Columbia Valley Community and Economic Development Office, Tourism Radium, Radium Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce, True Key Hotels and Resorts, Kanata, Mountain Hub and the District of Invermere – was “a great show of collaboration” and one he would like to repeat.

PERSPECTIVE Good intentions into action

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com Two recent fires that consumed a Fairmont home and a building from the Canal Flats mill are good reminders to check your smoke alarms, clean out your dryer vents and stoves and do all the emergency planning things that are so easy keep putting off until it’s too late.

You know you should, but will you? Why is it so hard to turn intentions into action?

I, for instance, have a dryer that takes so long to dry my laundry that I know I need to have the vent cleaned.

I haven’t, though. So far my fire-prevention solution has been to only use the dryer when I’m home to supervise it.

In my previous career, it was my job to help people do the things they wished they wanted to do – such as swapping out their old lightbulbs for energy-efficient ones. In a training program on encouraging sustainable behaviour, I heard about a water-efficiency program that failed. Results showed that if you gave an interested person a low-flow shower head, odds were high that the shower head would end up in a storage closet. Turns out that for many people actually installing the shower head was just too much effort.

How do you make sure people do the things they want to do? The answer is depressing: you probably have to do it for them. The group that gave out shower heads only found success when they went into the recipients’ washrooms and installed the shower heads for them.

Putting social expectations on others can also help them live up to their best intentions. Now that I admitted I need to clean my dryer vent, will I feel more pressure to execute my intention? That remains to be determined.

Another way to get people to live up to their intentions is to get their kids to pester them about it. Ever seen a kid give a stranger a lecture on smoking or littering?

Airport support needed Dear Editor: The Fairmont Hot Springs Resort has announced that it will no longer fund the operations of the Fairmont Airport (CYCZ) after March 31, 2020. Although the airport is owned by the Columbia Valley Airport Society, it has been funded largely by the resort since it was built in 1986. The airport has a 6,000 foot runway and advanced lighting systems making it possible to land large jet air ambulances in the heart of our valley. We are very fortunate to have such an excellent facility at our doorstep.

We are also fortunate to have access to the Southern Alberta Trauma System (SATS) which is dedicated to the provision of optimal trauma care to individuals and families affected by traumatic injury across Southern Alberta, South-Eastern British Columbia and South-Western Saskatchewan. Over 18 per cent of patients accessing SATS are from B.C. and Saskatchewan.

The key to success in the treatment of major trauma cases is speed, expertise and resources. In our valley that means rapid transport to a Level 1 Trauma Centre, the closest of which are Foothills and Alberta Chil-

dren’s Hospitals in Calgary. Jet air ambulance flying time from Fairmont to Calgary is 21 minutes.

We cannot afford to lose access to this exceptional air transport system. It is vital to the 24/7/365 provision of first-class emergency trauma services to the residents of the Columbia Valley. It is also critical to the recruitment and retention of the excellent physicians in our valley who cover our emergency department 24/7/365. They need our support and this airport.

The RDEK is currently considering funding options. If you feel strongly about this matter, please let your RDEK electoral area director (Areas F and G) or municipal director (Radium, Invermere and Canal Flats) know in writing as soon as possible. Strong community action will make the difference and keep the airport operating at its current level. We need letters of support and lots of them. Thank you.

For the love of community outreach

Submitted by Blair McFarlane from the Invermere Public Library As part of the Invermere library’s community outreach, we have been heading up to Columbia House (CoHo) once a month with our kid’s programming.

Our first two sessions in December and January were focused on STEAM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). We played with slime, made paper airplanes and helicopters that flew really far, and brought our Wondershop Dash robots (blue robots you control with an iPad) and our Ozobots (little robots that follow the line you draw with a marker). Both kids and seniors alike really enjoyed playing with the robots, and, through this play, we are able to start building digital and coding literacy skills.

For our February visit, we had our Robert Munsch Winter Reading Club session.

We focused on The Paper Bag Princess, and decorated our own paper bag dresses and crowns. There were even a few residents who decorated their own dresses too!

We’ve had three visits at CoHo now, and so myself and Jasmine (our high school student, whose mum happens to work at CoHo – how’s that for community connection?) are getting to know the residents, which ones like to sit and watch the kids participate, and those who love making the crafts and leave with an arm-

ful of fun creations to take back to their rooms. It has been really cool to see the CoHo residents interact and laugh with the kids who attend our programming, and, through this outreach, we are creating a space that fosters intergenerational connections through play. As a library, we are continually striving to be as accessible as possible and to reach all members of our community. Having the opportunity to do so at CoHo has been awesome. The library is more than just our great building; our services can extend wherever they are needed.

On that note, we have also extended our Canal Flats outreach. For a few years now, we’ve headed to Martin Morigeau Elementary once a month to read stories to each class, make a craft with them, and bring library books for them to check-out.

New this year, we have begun a book exchange for all Canal Flats residents at the village office. Once a month on a Wednesday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., we are set up at the Discovery Centre with a boxful of books for patrons to sign-out. This is great, especially this time of year, because now you don’t have to drive in winter conditions to get library books. If you can’t make it during the exchange hour, we are able to leave requests on our holds shelf at the village office for you to pick up when it’s convenient.

Our next visit to Columbia House will be on Friday, March 6 from 2 to 3 p.m. where we will be doing crafts and activities based on Dr. Seuss books. All are welcome. We will be in Canal Flats for another book exchange on Wednesday, March 11 from 3:30 to 4:30 at the Discovery Centre. See you there!

Patients healthier thanks to plants

By Dorothy Isted Special to the Pioneer Real men eat tofu but the caveat to that is, according to retired contractor and carpenter Bob Walker, you have to know how to cook it.

Having lost his fifty-six year old father to diabetes, Walker was not surprised when he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in January 2019. Wanting to inform himself about the disease, Walker researched Photo submitted accredited medical sites Diners enjoyed a healthy potluck. and discovered that it can be reversed by eating a whole foods plant based diet.

After attending an Interior Health diabetic seminar, where attendees were told diabetes was a chronic condition that couldn’t be reversed, he left angry and feeling that the other nine people in the room were not given the whole picture.

Walker’s doctor at the time offered medications but Walker wanted to try diet. He switched practitioners and is now a patient of Dr. Keith Weber, who encourages people to eat healthier in order to cure or alleviate health conditions.

Switching to a whole foods plant based diet wasn’t difficult because for several years Walker had embraced veganism. But he’d discarded that, ate more of a standard American diet and become quite sedentary.

Walker said: “A big killer of people with diabetes is heart disease, and meat isn’t good.”

He said while vegan advocates teach people not to eat meat and dairy, they don’t always teach them what is best to eat, adding, “(a vegan diet) can run high in oil and saturated fats, which is why more researchers tell people to eat (a whole foods plant based diet).”

A whole foods plant based diet consists of no processed foods or food additives, no white sugar, no wheat, no rice, no dairy and no animal protein. This leaves whole grains, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, legumes and, if even better benefits are desired, no oil except what occurs naturally in foods.

Along with eating better, Walker had to work on getting into better shape. At first, walking on a treadmill gave him chest pains. Now, he said: “hiking up Pedley Pass is pure joy, no leg cramps or being out of breath.”

After reading that muscle problems could be a side effect of statin drugs, and they only promise a three percent chance of preventing a heart attack, he quit the drug and no longer has leg pain. He has cut back on his other medications and his blood pressure is better than average.

Earlier this month, Walker’s A1C blood test results demonstrated he is no longer a diabetic.

Like Walker, Michael Calvert-Evers has been using his diet like medicine.

Calvert-Evers thought his vegan-embracing sister was a crackpot until he suffered a heart attack in August 2019 and had a stent put in his heart. He also suffered a gastrointestinal bleed. When he went to Invermere’s emergency department, Weber was on duty. Calvert-Evers said he’ll never forget being told: “You can reverse your heart disease by going on a plant based diet.”

Calvert-Evers then consulted his own physician who suggested he look at two videos online: Forks Over Knives and The Game Changers. The second featured the top weightlifter in the world, who is a vegan.

Calvert-Evers, who works for Interior Health and has a part time job at a grocery store, said: “I’ve noticed a lot of people are changing what they are buying as they came through the cashier’s desk. People who used to buy meat and dairy and junk food are [getting] more vegetables, kale and whole foods.”

He’s changed how he does food by looking up recipes online and getting recipes from his sister. With his roommate’s support, Calvert-Evers gave all their frozen meat to their neighbour, emptied the fridge of eggs and cheese and got rid of the tempting things from the pantry. Now that he is cooking a lot of soups and curries, he explained he is “on this regime to save my life.”

Calvert-Evers has been losing weight gradually, no longer has trouble breathing, has more energy, no longer needs a pill to sleep, feels better emotionally and has more mental clarity.

Weber has given about 20 lifestyle medicine seminars at Invermere’s library in the last two years, with the goal of “improving the health of the entire Columbia Valley.”

Since the new Canadian Food Guide makes recommendations like his, which the greater body of nutritional science supports, Weber said he “no longer feels like a radical fighting the system.”

Lake Windermere Alliance Church hosted a whole foods plant based potluck dinner on Sunday, February 23, where guests brought their favourite dishes along with recipe cards so those incorporating healthier eating could taste recipes new to them and take home healthy new culinary ideas.

Mountains as her muse

Faces and places: Baiba Morrow Submitted by Kootenay Conservation Program For Baiba Morrow, the mountains are both her muse and her sanctuary. Whether it’s the soaring Himalaya, the volcanoes of Kamchatka or the Ellsworths in Antarctica, they’ve shaped her outlook on life.

Since moving back to the East Kootenay in 2007, the Rockies and the Purcells give her daily inspiration that can take on many forms. Through her involvement in Wildsight Invermere, and eventually as its branch president since 2012, her efforts on the environmental front run from public outreach and community engagement on local conservation issues to organizing the Wild and Scenic Film festival, the branch’s main fundraising event, now in its seventh year.

Most recently, she’s encouraged by the announcement of the Qat’muk Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA), the final chapter in the fight to protect the Jumbo Valley from the environmental damage of a proposed ski resort and real estate development. Wildsight Invermere and its grassroots community played no small part in that effort.

“Perhaps what thrills me most about the outcome of the Jumbo saga is that it legitimizes the simple message we’ve been advocating all along. That the place is unique in our over-developed world, that it’s a refuge for all creatures, and that it has value in remaining wild,” Baiba said.

“It acknowledges the societal importance of biodiversity and sacred connection. I am truly in awe of the Ktunaxa for their vision, which is rooted in an ancient wisdom.

Qat’muk is a very special place.”

For more than 35 years, Baiba has been seeking out special mountain places. She’s travelled the world, exploring untrammelled regions on all seven continents while on assignment and expeditions as a photojournalist team with her husband Pat. Her journalistic background developed unconventionally. After university, she moved west from Montreal to work as an occupational therapist in a children’s hospital. There, in the Rockies, she met and later married Pat. With no formal training in writing or photography, she embraced the unpredictable lifestyle of a freelance photojournalist. Together, the couple have gained widespread recognition for their documentation of mountain cultures and adventures, producing films and authoring articles and books with a focus on the Himalaya. In 2017, they were awarded the Sir Christopher Ondaatje Medal for Exploration from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society alongside their friend ethnobotanist Wade Davis, who was recognized at the same ceremony.

“Having spent so much time in the most remote mountain regions on the planet, I really appreciate what we have here in the Columbia Valley. But it’s a tenuous balance between the pressures of development and tourism, and maintaining our diminishing supplies of clean water and air, not just for the residents of our valley, but for all living creatures. Unbridled economic development in nearby Banff, which attracts more than four million visitors a year — a phenomenon globally labelled as ‘overtourism’ — has impacted the lives of residents

Today, aside from getting out in the mountains as much as possible, tending to her garden and enjoying the Columbia Wetlands on her doorstep, Baiba continues to channel her efforts to broaden the conversation around conservation and environmental stewardship through Wildsight.

The Wildsight Invermere branch, now in its 31st year, continues to be the grassroots environmental voice of the Upper Columbia Valley. As well as undertaking health initiatives such as Pesticide-Free Invermere, and hands-on cleanups such as the Lake Enid Restoration Project and the removal of domestic waste dumped into the Columbia Wetlands, the branch organizes a variety of community events through its Wild Connections program with renowned speakers (including David Suzuki in 2012), the annual Ursus and Us Bear Awareness Day and the Wild and Scenic Film Festival.

A focus on climate change and adaptation is in the works. As part of that, the branch is spearheading Spark!, an electric vehicle share program for the Columbia Valley, to build awareness around the viability of electric vehicles. Spark! aims to be the first fully 100% electric vehicle share program in rural Canada and to serve as a vital step towards transitioning Columbia Valley communities to low-carbon transportation use.

Being one of a few Baha’is in the Columbia Valley

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Holding the faith is simply something you do, when you believe it with your entire being, even if your religious community is small in number in the Columbia Valley. Just ask Shizu Futa, one of just seven Baha’is here.

With an estimated seven million or so followers scattered worldwide, Baha’is are in a small minority anywhere they live, but interestingly enough they live just about everywhere around the globe (in some 221 countries and territories, according to the Britannica Encyclopedia).

The Baha’i religion is one of the youngest in the world, tracing its origins back to mid 1800s Iran (then known as Persia), springing from the teachings of a merchant known as the Bab and his successor (and the founder of the faith) the Baha’ullah (born as Mirza Husayn Ali Nuri).

The oneness of humankind and the common foundations of all religions are two of the central tenets of Baha’ism, and consequently Bahai’s revere Adam, Abraham, Moses, Krishna, Zoroaster, Buddha, Jesus and Muhummad as prophets, as well as the Bab and Baha’ullah.

“It doesn’t matter which prophet you look at, they have the same message of harmony, peace and being a good person,” Futa told the Pioneer. “Each messenger of God arrived at a time in humanity’s history that applied to that time and context.”

With so many prophets from already established religions, why did Baha’is need another two (the Bab and the Baha’ullah)?

“If you look chronologically, the most recent (prophet) before that was Muhammad. And if you look at how humanity has progressed since Muhammad’s time, the social and hierarchical orders have changed such that although the gist of Muhammad’s messages still applies, some of the dressings need to change,” said Futa. “The Baha’ullah came along at a time when there was a need for spiritual renewal.”

She adds that many of the changes the Baha’ullah called for: a universal global language, a universal global currency, a global economy, global labour laws, a sense of a collective global good and so on — in the hopes of ushering an era of increased harmony — are now starting to appear more likely, at least much more so that they did

“How we practice spirituality, view justice, how we view race and ethnicity, equality of the sexes has changed a lot. We as a species are growing dramatically,” she said. “The number one thing is unity and peace, and harmonious conduct of life on earth.”

What does being a Baha’i mean for Futa in terms of day-to-day life?

“Throughout the day the main thing is to do what we call ‘live the life,’ which is pursuing goodness, trying to do things in a pure manner. To be kind to everybody and have compassion,” said Futa. “So when I step outside my door, when I participate in society, I should be trying to do something that further uplifts humankind.”

So how did Futa, raised as Catholic right here in Invermere, become a Baha’i herself?

“Somewhere in me I always felt that there was a progress to religion. When I was young, my dad always used say you need to be aware of the world around you,” she said. “Well, Jesus says he will come again, and he didn’t say he would be the only manifestation of the Father. Jesus could have come and gone and we wouldn’t be the wiser.”

After Futa graduated from high school, she left Invermere to study literature at the University of British Columbia. There one of her elective courses was religious studies, which focused on the monotheistic Abrahamic religions. Another course was in Fare (Should this be Far, not Fare???) Eastern art, which, owing to the religious nature of much art from that part of the world, exposed her to several other faiths.

“At the end of that year, I came away saying Christ is not the be all end all,” said Futa.

Back in Invermere after school, Futa took a job at the Invermere Inn, where she worked with a Baha’i couple. Futa didn’t pick up the new faith immediately. Although she left university no longer a Catholic, it would be at least a year and a half later before she identified as Baha’i.

“What eventually drew me in (to the Baha’i faith) was how it felt like coming home,” she said. “I knew I believed in Baha’ullah before I admitted it out loud and became a card carrying Baha’i, which I eventually did because I realized I had a responsibility to act on what I believed.”

What is it like to have such a small local faith community?

It’s no problem at all for Futa, who engages in service and worship simply by the way she lives her life.

“For the Baha’is work is worship. Even the most menial of chores or the most intellectual of pursuits is work, if it is done in the spirit of service,” she said. “Service and worship are one and the same. My method of teaching the faith is no different than my way of living the faith: try to be a good person and be on the side of justice... It’s like being a tree in some ways. You need your feet rooted in the ground and your head in the clouds.” She paused to laugh. “Kind of easy for me I guess, since I was already known for having my head A Unique Shopping Experience in the clouds.”

With masterful physicality and quick-witted wordplay, James & Jamesy conjure answers to the age-old questions ‘Who are we?’ and ‘Why are we here?’ The result is laugh-out-loud hilarious and surprisingly illuminating.

Trout face risk due to whirling disease Submitted by Breanne Massey Special to the Pioneer After whirling disease was discovered in trout roughly four years ago, Parks Canada begun taking measures to protect Crown land from the threat of aquatic invasive species.

Due to the fact that Yoho and Kootenay are the gateway to B.C., there is no shortage of preventative steps being taken.

“Parks Canada is taking action to protect healthy aquatic ecosystems in its national parks,” said Shelley Humphries, Parks Canada aquatic specialist for Lake Louise, Yoho and Kootenay National Parks. “Healthy aquatic ecosystems are key to the health of our national parks and are threatened by aquatic invasive species.”

A pilot project for voluntary self-certification of watercrafts and water-related gear was implemented in 2018.

In addition, the use of felt-soled wading boots was banned in 2018 in an effort to move infection from the Banff, Yoho and Kootenay area.

There was also a zero possession limit, which means catch-and-release only, that was implemented for fishers in the parks area.

“In 2019 we launched mandatory self-inspection permits for Yoho and Kootenay,” said Humphries. “Yoho and Kootenay are the gateway into B.C. so we wanted extra precautions across this continental boundary.”

“Invasive mussels have not yet been detected in Alberta or B.C. but we know there are locations in central Canada and the western U.S. that have tested positive, and each year the provincial inspectors intercept a few mussel-positive watercraft,” said Humphries.

Aquatic invasive species are harmful to the aquatic ecosystem, and the species that are deemed at-risk can be permanently altered when people transport the disease.

“Some invasive species, once they arrive, are next to impossible to remove,” said Humphries.

Weekly Whiteway Report The days are getting longer and the air is getting warmer but we still have a few good skiing and skating days left.

Lake Windermere remains in fair conditions for skating, with the best ice being from Timber Ridge to Terra Vista, and Windermere Beach to Indian Beach, and good skiing conditions. Lake Lillian has held onto excellent skiing conditions.

Get out there and enjoy it while it’s still here. Thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who came and cleaned

up the Lake this past Sunday February 23. Don’t forget if you are out there with your pooch to stop and scoop their poop.”

This month focuses on heritage and how it makes a mark on our lives. During Heritage Week, the theme is “Bringing the Past into the Future.”

During this month I started to look at things that have come from the past to make our future or continue to be part of our future.

I first doubted many things were coming back until I started looking into what I did as a kid. The first thing I remembered was growing a garden and preserving the harvest. I remember reading that courses were being offered on canning and preserving food as they are becoming lost skills. Then gardening is on a comeback as more people want to know where there food is coming from; the slow food movement is a good example.

Another area that is always “on a comeback” is fashion. Bell bottoms made a comeback and then the ’80s returned with everything BIG. I have looked around and can appreciate how fashion works out here. Winter time is practical: down-filled jackets and

toques or trappers hat. Be it homemade or commercially purchased, head gear has always been a must. Summer time brings even more variety. Clothes can be seen from different decades depending on a person’s style.

Ponchos or throw covers that “hide everything” were found years ago in fashion.

Everyday items may not have a comeback but they are always there and sometimes they just look different. Phones use to be attached to a wall and now they go everywhere with us as cell phones. Laundry was a chore done over days that used scrub boards and sad irons; now it can be done in a few hours using a washing machine and dryer.

Take a few moments and reflect on how things have changed over time.

Then look and you may see where it originally came from. The last images I have are the old TV show “Get Smart” where an actor talks on his phone located in his shoe or Star Trek with the communicator that flipped open so the captain could say “Beam me up Scotty.”

Submitted by Windermere Valley Minor Hockey Association The Midgets had their Banner Tournament this weekend and lost both games.

They first loss was against Cranbrook 7-0 and the second loss was against Creston 7-4. This wasn’t the finish for which they had hoped, after winning the Tier 4 Provincials last year. The following midgets have now finished their Minor Hockey careers: Brendan Kruger, Matt Cable, Will Clark, Morgan Clarke and Nick Irons.

Brent Clarke is retiring as a coach as well.

This weekend the Senior Girls traveled to Red Deer to play in the first round of playoffs, and left with two losses. They fought hard against a very tough team.

Saturday’s game was a 3-1 loss with Jersey Ponych scoring the only goal. Sunday’s game concluded with a 6-2 loss. Goals were scored by Soren Douglas and Pressly Irons. The Senior Girls are now finished for the 2019-2020 season, but had a fun and successful year.

The Invermere Bantams traveled to Fernie this past weekend to play the Ghostriders for a league game. The Rockies finished with a 5-1 win. Goals were scored by Brayden Mastroianni and two goals each for Lief Dubreuil and Connor Von Niessen. This team will travel to Van-

Our very own Initiation Rockies had their home tournament on Saturday, February 22. It was an epic showdown of determination, grit and fierce competition. They may be small, but proved to be mighty with several top shelf shots, expert dangling, and fast clappers. Each barnburner game was well earned by players and coaches alike. Head coach George Pemberton could be heard praising his team, and repeatedly asking where his coffee went. Coaches Jason Botterill, Steve Bush, and Greg Lapointe pushed their teams hard, and were heard yelling “Less chirping!” and “rip it top cheese!”

Overall, Connor McDavid himself would have been proud.

THE BLUE LINE Rockies invite fans to playoff games Submitted by Columbia Valley Rockies Your Rockies will open their playoff run against the Fernie Ghostriders in Fernie on Friday and Saturday before opening at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena on Monday and Tuesday (March 2 and 3).

The Columbia Valley Rockies played two division rivals last weekend at home against Golden on Friday and on the road against Fernie.

The Rockies hosted the visiting Rockets on Friday.

From the opening a couple of missed offside calls immediately put the Rockies behind the eight ball. It was evident this night the Rockies were going to get out of this game with no injuries and ready for the upcoming battles with Fernie. The Rockies lost Friday night and prepared for the statement trip on Saturday they were determined to make.

On Saturday your Rockies hit the ice and rocked the home team with their effort and determination. This game would go to double overtime, and again a questionable referee decision would determine the outcome. The home team was outpaced with the Rockies outshooting them 48 to 30.

The first period had the Rockies take the lead on a goal by Gavin Fleck from Alex Novakowski. The home team would respond but the Rockies answered right back as Gareth Nicholas found the back of the net with feeds from Hunter Rambow and Alex Novakowski. . . . ‘Trout’ from page 17 “Whirling disease does not affect people but it is very harmful to trout and can have devastating effects on fish population levels. In Kootenay National Park our westslope cutthroat trout are species of special concern, and in Banff where (whirling disease) is present both westslope cutthroat and bull trout are already listed as threatened. We are worried about these native fish populations because they are already a conservation concern.”

But perhaps the most alarming concern to Humphries is the mussels.

“The mussels have a more indirect effect – they are filter feeders so they steal all the food in the water body before it can become accessible to fish,” she wrote the Pioneer.

“They can change the entire food web. In addition, the shells and then the periods when the mussels die off ruin beaches, water intakes and infrastructure.”

Restoring health to the ecosystem

“In Banff, near Lake Louise we had one small pond with non-native rainbow trout that were also whirling disease positive. We were particularly worried as this pond was quite close to the Yoho/Banff boundary. We treated this lake with an organically-derived chemical called Rotenone that removes all the fish. This will break the lifecycle of the parasite and decreases the chance that birds could move an infected fish.”

Ongoing tests have been conducted regularly.

Emerald Lake in Yoho was retested in October, and Parks Canada was pleased to report that the water remains negative for aquatic invasive species.

Humphries urges the public to stop at every provincial or border inspection station and to clean, drain and dry water equipment after every usage.

“This is a best practice across North America that everyone is going to have to embrace,” she said. “This means remove all mud, plants and water after every use and dry your gear for 48 hours before launching in a new location. Parks Canada appreciates the cooperation of watercraft operators in preventing this threat to park waters.”

In addition, student programs running during the summer months encourage students to speak to the public to help raise awareness. Last summer, the students reached 2,000 people with this approach.

“It only takes one contaminated watercraft to transport aquatic invasive species into the parks,” concluded Humphris.

The second OT had the Rockies dominating and at one point breaking out with a player streaking up the ice; he was hauled down from behind on a no call. The resulting turnover had the home team head up ice on a 3 on 2 and, overmanned, ended the game.

These will be the best series games to watch in the opening round of the KIJHL playoffs.
