VALLEY NEWS Hammer-wielding woman robs Dairy Queen

By Steve Hubrecht Steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com In a bizarre yet serious incident, the local Dairy Queen was robbed last week by a middle-aged woman brandishing a hammer and wrapped in a large yellow blanket.

The lone female robber entered the Dairy Queen, which was empty except for the staff on duty, sometime not long before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, waving the hammer and demanding cash. She made off with an undisclosed amount of money, leaving the restaurant, jumping into a nearby passenger car, believed by RCMP to be a late model red Hyundai Accent, and fleeing the area.

Multiple frontline Columbia Valley RCMP officers responded, as soon as they were notified of the robbery, with some attending the scene and others conducting patrols in the area in an attempt to locate the getaway vehicle. The police later put out a press release and released a video surveillance image of the incident (see photo at right). On Friday, February 14, Columbia Valley RCMP

officers tracked down and arrested a 58-year-old Kimberley woman, identified as the suspect, in Kimberley.

Kimberley RCMP assisted in both the investigation and arrest.

The RCMP are still investigating the incident and are keen to hear from any witnesses who have not yet spoken with police or anybody else with any additional information. Old mill in ashes; new tech compound spared

By By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com A huge fire tore through the old Canal Flats sawmill last week, reducing pretty much the entire old mill fabrication building to ashes, but miraculously sparing almost every part of the compound that had been repurposed into a new technology industry complex.

The Canal Flats fire department was dispatched to the sawmill at around 2 p.m. on Monday, February 10, as enormous flames engulfed the mill building, arriving on scene with 10 firefighters, three trucks, a tanker and an engine. The firefighters immediately called for mutual aid from the Fairmont and Invermere fire departments, which collectively sent another four trucks and 15 firefighters.

“It (the fire) was about 50,000 square feet,” said Canal Flats fire chief Peter Fry. “That is right up there with the largest fires the village has seen.”

“It was just smoke and then all of a sudden: kaboom! Up she went,” said eyewitness Syd Danis. “It went very, very fast because it’s an old wooden building ... It didn’t take very much time, about an hour or so, before everything was down on the ground ... It

was just crazy.”

The fire chewed through the mill building with roaring abandon, leaving little behind, but the fighfighters battling the blaze were able to tame the conflagration just as it started reaching the refurbished parts of the compound that are the home base of the Columbia Lake Technology Centre’s tenant company PodTech Data Centers Inc. “The fire took most of the sawmill. In fact none of the mill is left,” said Peter Fry. “At the same time, none of the newer structure was lost, except for some damage to three of the offices and bit of the lunchroom.”

PodTech employees were evacuated as soon as the fire began, meaning there were no injuries, though Danis told the Pioneer he saw an employee running out with hard drives.

“There were no computers in the sawmill. What he might have seen is some of the people grab a few laptops as they evacuated,” said Peter Fry, adding that the fire started at the opposite end of the compound as the PodTech offices.

Relatively calm conditions on the day helped keep the flames from spreading more rapidly, and possibly sending PodTech up in smoke as well, or as Danis

put it: “Thank goodness there was no wind that day.

If there would have been a wind, it would have been game over. You know, get a north wind, and then it would have been blowing at high speed right into the PodTech plant.”

By 9 p.m. the firefighters had the flames under control, although a smaller number of firefighters remained stationed on site for another 24 hours to monitor hot spots and make sure the fire did not kick back up.

Peter Fry said that although insurance companies are still investigating the cause of the blaze, it is deemed accidental in his report. “At the moment there are a couple theories” as to exactly how the fire started, he said, adding he can’t disclose what those theories are while the insurance investigation is still ongoing.

Columbia Lake Technology Centre and PodTech co-founder Brian Fry confirmed to the Pioneer that although a small part of PodTech’s office area was burned, the affects were small and it was “back to business as usual” the very next day for the company.

Peter Fry extended thanks to the Fairmont and Invermere fire departments for their quick responses to the incident.

This past week, February 10 through February 16, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 53 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.

On Monday, February 10, a resident on 9th Avenue in Invermere reported someone had spray painted two vehicles parked on the driveway with green paint.

The owner suspected his vehicles were targeted. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP or Crimestoppers.

On Tuesday, February 11, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of theft of fuel from the Spur Valley Golf Course in Edgewater. At approximately 2 a.m. a male and female in an older model pickup siphoned fuel from a piece of equipment. Police have requested the video footage for their investigation. On the same day the Springs golf course discovered footprints in the snow leading to their maintenance area but it did not appear anything had been stolen.

On Wednesday, February 12, Columbia Valley RCMP officers executed a search warrant on a vehicle

in Invermere and seized a quantity of a controlled substance believed to be cocaine along with other items consistent with drug trafficking. This investigation is ongoing and no further details are being released at this time.

On Saturday, February 15, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of an impaired driver near Radium Hot Springs. Officers responded and located the suspect vehicle, a Dodge Ram pickup, on Capilo Way near Invermere.

Upon speaking with the driver, the officer noted signs of impairment and initiated an impaired driving investigation. The driver was uncooperative and refused to provide a breath sample. The driver was arrested for refusal and lodged in cells until he was sober to prevent continuation of the offence. The driver was released on conditions to appear in court at a later date.

On Saturday, February 15 at 11 a.m., police responded to a rear-end collision on 7th Avenue in Invermere.

The driver of a southbound Ford F150 stopped for traffic when he was struck from behind by a Ford F250. Both vehicles sustained minor damage and a passenger in the Ford F250 was transported to the hospital by ambulance to be assessed. The driver of the Ford F250 was issued a violation ticket for following too close.

Local Special Olympics skier heads to Canada Winter Games

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Invermere resident and alpine skier Marlow Feldmann will represent B.C. at the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games later this month.

Marlow has been skiing with the local Special Olympics BC – Invermere group for years, and over the past few years has progressed from competing at the regional level to the provincial level to now the national level.

“She’s going to have a great time. It’s a really big deal for her,” said Marlow’s mom Betty-Jean.

Marlow will compete in the slalom, giant slalom, and Super G disciplines at the games, which will be held from February 25 to February 28 in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Inspiration Night

Marlow and her coach will head out to the games along with fellow Region 1 teammates from Cranbrook and Kimberley on Saturday, February 22. Her parents (Betty-Jean and Fritz) will follow along to join the fun on Monday, February 24.

“We are really excited. Fritz and I are just thrilled,” said Betty-Jean. “We’re so proud. We know she’ll do her best, enjoy herself and that it will be a great experience for her, especially to do this with all her friends.”

The games will be the Feldmanns’ first trip as far east as Ontario. Stay tuned to the Pioneer for a report on Marlow’s experience at the games.

Radium accommodators seek ban on short term rentals

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com Radium council members met with local hotel and motel representatives in January and again last week to discuss issues with short-term rentals.

Some of the accommodators’ concerns – including those Michael Anderson, president of True Key Hotels and Resorts, raised in a report – are: that accommodators are having financial difficulties, that some are struggling to fill their rooms, and that hotel operators may leave the community if short-term rentals are allowed to continue.

Deb James, from Inn on Canyon, spoke at the Radium council meeting on Wednesday, February 12 to share her feedback.

“The accommodators are at their wits’ end ... It is killing our industry,” James said bluntly. “We have a wild west, a gold rush, happening right now.”

While she asked for an outright ban on short-term rentals as it would be the easiest solution to enforce, she acknowledged that it would be “a real unpopular subject.”

If council doesn’t want to move forward with a full ban, she would at least like to see short-term rentals prohibited during the shoulder seasons in the spring and fall.

“This is a huge issue for everyone. It’s all about money,” she said. “We need that short-term rental money in the spring and fall to get through the winter.”

She noted that the current closure at the Radium Hot Springs pools is making the situation even more dire for accommodators and suggested fees, taxes and licences would be needed to even the playing field between commercial accommodators and those offering their units for short-term rentals.

“Everybody’s making money. We need it sustainable so everybody has a share and it works,” she said.

Regardless of how council chooses to proceed, she wants to see regulations in place by June 1.

“The rush has started. We have run out of time,” she said, adding that there are around 200 short-term rentals in the area at the moment, that she fears many more may follow, and that the community can’t afford to let the

free-for-all continue.

Unless council limits or regulates short-term rentals she warned: “you’re not going to have accommodators here anymore.”

Anderson also spoke at council and said he was opposed to letting short-term rentals continue “getting a free ride.”

Allowing Airbnb rentals is like letting unregulated hot-dog carts set up downtown and undercut commercial restaurants that have commercial expenses, he said.

“It’s difficult to compete when your competitors have a much much lower cost to operate,” he said.

Short-term rentals pay employees under the table, he said, adding that doing so drives up labour costs for legitimate businesses.

Short-term rentals are also “making housing unavailable” and mean that the community doesn’t have affordable housing where potential employees could live, he said.

Councillor Dale Shudra asked if banning short-term rentals in Radium would simply result in would-be visitors staying elsewhere in the valley “which doesn’t help you at all.”

While Anderson would like to see consistent valley-wide regulations for short-term rentals, he wants Radium to get moving rather than risk waiting on the District of Invermere and the Regional District of East Kootenay.

“A lot of people might starve to death between now and then,” he said.

Council was opposed to banning short-term rentals but intends to discuss regulatory options at a Committee of the Whole meeting.

Councillor Mike Gray said a meeting earlier in the week with accommodators, chamber of commerce representatives and council members left him hopeful about finding a workable compromise to regulate short-term rentals.

Once the ideas of banning short-term rentals or giving them free reign were ruled out, he said “we’re not as far apart as it may seem.”

My family coined the phrase “Family Fun Day,” but it was never fun, not for me and likely not for anyone who had to put up with me back when the only thing more embarrassing than having a family was being seen with them.

On Fridays after work, my dad would rush to the bank to take out $20 – before ATMs would spit out cash on demand – to fund our weekend adventures. When it was my turn to decide on our activity, I would pick buying Slurpees and hiding out at home playing board games so no one would see us in public.

On our worst-ever Family Fun Day, my parents took us to Wascana Lake, which is in the centre of Regina and visible from two of the city’s main drags, and rented two-seater peddle boats. As one of my sisters and I drove reluctantly around the lake with our feet, it felt like the most humiliating thing my parents could do to us.

Ages ago when a friend and her brother were having a spat, their exasperated mom foretold the future. She said: One day you will fly across the country to see each other.

On purpose. Because you like each other. A decade or two later, the siblings proved their mom right.

Eventually I grew a liking for my family too, but by then our Family Fun Day tradition had run its course.

Now I’m the one arranging visits, driving all the way to Saskatchewan for Family Day and rounding everyone up to play games. The moral of the story is to appreciate your family time while you have it in abundance. And if something has “fun” in its name, try to enjoy it.

Happy belated Family Fun Day to everyone who went to the District of Invermere’s party at the Columbia Valley Centre on Monday. It looks like it was a blast.

The case against immigration Dear Editor: Just for clarity of word, MIGRANT is a person who moves within a country, while an IMMIGRANT moves from one country to another. Think you were disappointed, frustrated about my letter on Immigration – my research started by naively reading about the Fort McMurray situation, and quickly escalated to disbelief, shock and a growing dread in the pit of my stomach as to the extent of this mass immigration scope. From the Atlantic Immigration Pilot 2017 described as a ‘fast track immigration program that welcomed 7,000 newcomers and their families to Atlantic Canada’ straight through to Welcome BC, immigration policies abound. The apparent objective is to take the population of Canada from 37 million to 110 million at a rate of 350,000 a year under a host of fancy-sounding immigration programs.

You ask about the companies in the valley that are going to sponsor unknown immigrants. I asked a few business owners if they were consulted by anyone about this Entrepreneurial Immigration Pilot Program, and couldn’t find any. It is NOT a local community initiative, it is a federal government program gone amok when you have too much power. There are 45 communities in B.C. for this one immigration program alone. I noted these listed communities on the map -

interesting for further discussion. Fort McMurray had 10,000 to 25,000 immigrants imposed on them after they were reeling from their devastating fires in the city and many lost their homes. It was amazing how federal government, foreign investors, etc. were able to provide homes, build condo complexes, for the immigrants.

Other rural areas overwhelmed by mass migration: check out Brooks, Alberta and see how that is working out for them. (It’s not.) What about Claresholm, Alberta (population 3,700), which is expected under the Rural Immigration Pilot Project to bring another 25,000 immigrants from third world countries, or Vernon, B.C., which is expected to take its population from 40,000 to 110,000. There are 11 communities across Canada named for this immigration program.

Quebec is the only province that currently selects its own economic immigrants. This information online is extensive if you have the time to delve into this subject.

We the citizens are not considered. Why would we be – we’re just other people naive in our peaceful, incredible environment. Along comes a grassroots groundswell to take back our communities and provinces – Wexit British Columbia. Check out their web site. I’m arranging a gathering of citizens. Interested? LETTERS Trusting trustees to make most important decision of their term

Dear Editor: Our ELECTED school board trustees have the most important decision of their term to make.

In the coming days they will decide who to hire as our School District 6 superintendent.

It is my deepest hope that our trustees take with utmost seriousness their position of being elected to represent the people.

As an active and engaged parent, I can tell you that we have made it clear to the Board of Trustees that in this process we request that all stakeholder groups be consulted.

To date the board of trustees has consulted these stakeholder groups: indigenous leaders, District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC), CUPE, school administrators, and teachers. A representative from each of these groups has been invited to sit in on the interviews and provide comments at the end of the interview process.

In the end the ONLY people who will make the decision on who to hire as our superintendent are our elected TRUSTEES. These are the people we trust to represent us, who have sworn an oath of office, and who have a code of ethics that includes: Policy 1500 - As a member of the Board of Education: #7. I will earnestly try to interpret the needs and attitudes of the community and do my best to translate them into the educational program of the schools.

I ask our trustees to introspectively remove any pre-existing lenses or suppositions they may have and to listen carefully to and contemplate deeply on the feedback they receive from the stakeholder representatives. These representatives are intimately involved in the education of our children. We have chosen them to represent the people who have their feet on the ground in our schools day in and day out. These are the people who best know the type of leader that our school district desires/needs.

Human-caused synurbization Dear Editor: Earth is splattered with the remains of many civilizations. The Anasazi, Maya, Moche and Easter Island are just some examples. These societies did something stupid, collapsed, and disappeared forever. They were complex civilizations, like our own, some with written language, inter-city commerce and centralized decision making.

War and starvation marked their end, in what’s often described as self-inflicted ecocide.

We are now a global society; maybe that’s where we’re heading.

Today, one in four mammals, one in eight birds, one third of all amphibians and 70 per cent of the world’s assessed plants on the IUCN Red List are in danger of extinction. Human activity in the last 500 years has forced over 800 species into extinction. The dodo, giant auk and the passenger pigeon were all commercially harvested to extinction and nearly so the wild turkey.Where are the buffalo, or the south Selkirk caribou herds? Anybody care?

No need to worry, our scientists will warn us if we’re doing something stupid, right? What scientists? Have you forgotten? Steven Harper got rid of them. Scientists and researchers were gagged, fired and defunded. In our “post-truth” society, science itself is being discredited. Harper’s omnibus Bill C-38 removed what little protection Canada’s flora, fauna, fish and fowl had. Investors can go ahead and exploit. Cranbrook is killing town deer now, and wolf culls may be happening. Obviously profits are higher for killing than restoring habitat.

Remember government “experts” telling us wild animals come into town because they are “habituated.” Now the townspeople are blamed for causing the problem by feeding them. Truth is, wildlife moving into towns has been studied in Europe since the 1970s. It’s called synurbization. Synurbization is wildlife reacting to a usually human-caused loss of habitat. For that we kill these animals.

Are we stupid enough to go extinct one last time? We may soon find out.

“The Art of Coffee” Invermere Coffee Fest Art Competition REGISTER AT www.invermerecoffeefest.com

Eileen Madson Primary School (EMP) is hosting a series of events with playtimes and speakers to help kids and their parents start getting ready for school long before the students-in-training will get their own coat hooks and indoor shoes.

The Strengthening Early Years to Kindergarten program is intended to help future students and their parents feel comfortable, welcome and safe at school. The events are also opportunities for families to learn about school and community groups as well as to meet educators, parents and caregivers.

“We feel lucky to be part of this project ... to support families in the valley and at EMP,” said teacher Kim Erven-Culler. “It gives children and parents the opportunity to build connections at the school.”

While the events may appear focused on fun, they’re intended to help students transition smoothly into kindergarten and to set future students up for social and emotional well-being as well as academic success.

Erven-Culler said the events include homework: a small “tool kit” of activities for families to use later on.

“One mom indicated that she liked having the speaker and school staff in attendance in an informal way that allowed parents to make connections with the activities and understand how the information helps build the transition to school, a pathway that begins at birth,” said Erven-Culler.

The next event called Social: Building Relationships will take place on Wednesday, February 26. Physical: Let’s Play will be on April 1. Language: Let’s Tell Stories will run on April 29. The free drop-in events run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and are for children under 6. The events will take place in the EMP gymnasium.

The school will also host an evening event in May called Healthy Together.

The events are offered in partnership with the school district, the B.C. Ministry of Education, Strong Start, Family Dynamix and Ready Set Learn.

This competition is free to enter. Artists are encouraged to submit an original and signed piece of artwork that represents the theme of coffee. The work submitted can be any form of art with no restriction on media used (painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, etc).

Coffee Fest Expo attendees will have the chance to vote for their favorite piece of coffee art. The winner of “the Art of Coffee” will receive a $50 gift certificate to Kicking Horse Café in Invermere.

All contestants will be notified by email and the winning entry will be posted on the Invermere BC Events Facebook Page.

Each artist must submit a small description of the art piece with the media used. Each piece will be displayed at Coffee Fest and the piece will be returned to the artists following the event. Artwork is encouraged to be submitted in a frame.

January 8th, 2020: Registration opens for art submissions.

February 28th, 2020: Until 4 pm: Final deadline for artwork submissions.

March 7th, 2020: Artwork is displayed at the Invermere Coffee & Tea Fest Expo.

March 8th, 2020: Winner is contacted and announced on Invermere BC Facebook Events page!

Heritage week update February is Heritage Month. The Provincial Heritage Week is February 17-21. The Heritage Theme is “Bringing the past into the future.”

During February, the museum will be open on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m..

On Thursday, February 20 at 2 p.m. there will be a gathering at the museum with a guest speaker from Kootenay National Park: Lori Horrocks. Everyone is welcome.

Kootenay National Park is celebrating its centennial this year. They unveiled a Canada Post stamp on January 13 as only one of their activities.

There are many more, so do come along and hear of the updates for the coming year.

On April 21, 1920, the federal government agreed to built the Banff/Windermere highway.

The road was completed September 30, 1922. This became a very important corridor from the Columbia Valley to Banff and Calgary. Five miles on either side of the highway became Kootenay National Park. In the early years, it was a long day’s drive.

And finally, remember the summer theme is “Heritage Buildings.” This will be a pictorial display of many of our heritage buildings from Canal Flats to Spillimacheen. Watch for the opening date.

Totem pole At the same council meeting, landscaper Tony Evans suggested that council consider placing a 35-foot totem pole in the centre of the roundabout that will be installed at the intersection between Highway 93 and 95.

“You want people to come to Radium and remember,” he said, adding that the centrepiece would welcome travellers to Radium and demonstrate an appreciation for indigenous culture.

Evans brought his sketchbook to council to share artistic renditions of his idea.

Mayor Clara Reinhardt proposed carrying his idea forward for further consideration along with other design options.

“I really applaud your get up and go,” she said.

Water treatment plant The village is building a third water train (a big holding tank that does filtration) for its water treatment plant to increase the plant’s capacity by 30 percent.

Back in August, the plant was overwhelmed when a hanging glacier calved and sent a flood of water down Irish Creek. At the time, Mark Read, chief administrative officer for the village, said so much sediment coursed into Radium’s water treatment plant that “the plant was basically operating at maximum capacity.”

The third train means the plant will be better prepared for future issues that could arise.

Pick a time, any time As the Province considers changing time zones, individual communities will get to pick what time suits them best.

“We’re on Mountain (Standard Time) to begin with because we’re more aligned to Alberta,” Reinhardt said, but added that “it’s silly” that “each municipality can do what they want.”

While council opted to hold off on any decisions, Gray, who owns Horsethief Creek Pub and Eatery joked: “Think of the alcohol service we could be doing.”

Loving each other the Whiteway

By Signe Olynyk Special to the Pioneer Cathy Stephens and Jeff Hanson are newlyweds from Northern Idaho who fell in love with the valley on their first visit together five years ago. After buying a place in Fairmont Ridge, it didn’t take them long to discover that they could cross-country ski across Lake Windermere to their favourite pub, and still make it home before dark.

Cathy was not exactly a cold-weather, outdoor-sports enthusiast, but Jeff was an avid mountain climber and professionally guided others to the peaks of Mount Rainier and through parts of South America.

For the adventurous spirits, gliding across the Whiteway for a bite to eat was the perfect date. It didn’t take long for Cathy to embrace a mountain life of downhill skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and all that the area has to offer.

It was a snowy, cloudy day the first time they plowed their skis across the lake.

They started at the south end. By the time they glided into Invermere, the couple was starving. This started the unexpected tradition of cross-country skiing the trail with the reward of a hot toddy, a pint or two of Arrowhead and some hearty French onion soup to warm up at the Station Neighbourhood Pub. Along the way, people were fishing from their ice shacks. Families were skating.

And the ice rinks were filled with slapshots and aspiring hockey heroes.

“It felt like a truly Canadian experience,” said Cathy. “It was so peaceful and idyllic.”

“A majestic lake surrounded by mountains: how could anyone not want to call this place home?” added Jeff.

The peace was soon disrupted when a truck drove across the entire lake, a sight that Cathy had never experienced before.

“The ice was making these cracking noises as the truck drove by. It was a little bit terrifying,” she said.

Cathy and Jeff were witnessing what locals jokingly refer to as ‘The Windermere Highway’ – a stretch of frozen lake that commuters use as a short-cut between Windermere and the townsite of Invermere.

Since then, Cathy and Jeff have brought many friends and family to the area for visits so they too can experience the Canadian Rockies and the joy of combining nature and exercise.

Although Cathy and Jeff are not skaters, the Whiteway is a magical experience that can be enjoyed many ways. The couple is almost sad when the lake thaws and they can no longer ski back and forth.

“It’s a much colder swim,” joked Jeff.

Local to skate at BC Winter Games Submitted by Columbia Valley Skating Club Columbia Valley Skating Club is proud to announce the accomplishments of our own Ocea Dubray, who will be attending the 2020 BC Winter Games in Fort St. John, B.C..

Ocea has had many accomplishments this season including attending four competitions within and outside of the Kootenay Region and placing at many of them including at the East Kootenay Invitational, where she placed second in her juvenile event as well as her Star 7 event.

She has passed two Star 7 dance assessments and is working on her Star 6 skills and Star 8 dances and is hoping to achieve gold dance and skill status by the end of her skating career.

She skates five days a week including some time in Fernie B.C., attending every off-ice and on-ice session possible and is determined to improve daily.

Ocea is a very upbeat and sportsman-like skater and enjoys having fun and playing games on the ice with her fellow club members.

We wish the best of luck to Ocea in the Winter Games on February 21.

Weekly Whiteway Report: Clean-up crew wanted To keep the Whiteway and the lake “so peaceful and idyllic,” as Cathy Stephens called it in the above story, everyone is invited to join Lake Windermere Whiteway Ambassadors for a lake cleaning party.

The Whiteway Clean Up will take place on Sunday, February 23 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m..

Volunteers will meet at Kinsmen Beach at 10:30 to grab supplies and pick an area to clean. All are welcome to participate in the tidying effort to keep the lake in good shape.

You’d be hard pressed to guess that after listening to national blues festivals all over the globe, from Tangier to Paris to New Orleans and beyond. Uncle Harvey Stanley passed away Friday, February 7, 2020 at 5:35 pm with family at his bedside in ?akisqnuk.

Thank you everyone for your love and care.”

Harvey Cushing Stanley was born December 9, 1952 and passed away February 7, 2020.

Snyder, Malcom “Mickey” Fredrick July 21st, 1946 February 2nd, 2020 It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share with all of you the sudden passing of our amazing Dad, Husband, Grandfather, Brother and Best Friend.

He was born with a sparkle in his eye and a mischievous grin that stayed with him his entire 73 years. His first love was truck driving and we literally had to pry the keys out of Dad’s hands when it was time to retire. He loved talking on the radio to his trucker friends and being a part of the ‘trucker family.’ He will always be known as “two stack pete with Mickey in the seat”.

When he was asked to service the trucks on Saturdays, he was like a little kid in a candy shop wearing his dirtiest coveralls with grease under his fingernails. Dad was the gentlest of souls and would love to have his family and friends around him. When the conversation would turn away from his direction, he would always try to catch a cat nap. We got such a kick out of hearing him snore in his “sleepy chair” or his favourite chair on the deck. We all loved spending time with Dad on the swing on the front porch watching the amazing view of the mountains while some sipped tea, some drank wine, and others shared Millers.

Dad loved the valley and he was a proud member of the Edgewater Legion. There is not a time we would go anywhere with Dad and he didn’t stop to talk to (and hug) at least 10 people!

Everyone loved Mickey and he will be dearly missed.

Mickey leaves to mourn his fantastic wife, Linda, his children, Dwayne (Kristy, Tanner and Shayne), Murray (Robin, Stephanie, Kyle and Nicholas) and Marina (Brian, Zach and Evan), step-daughter Melanie (Craig, Caitlin and Ryan), his siblings Len, Lawrence and Shelley. We couldn’t possibly list all of Dad’s friends, but you know who you are.

Dad was predeceased by his parents, his brother Rusty and grandson Todd.

Please come and share some laughs and stories with us at Mickey’s Celebration of Life on Saturday, February 22nd, 2020 at 11 am at the Canadian Martyrs Church in Invermere. If you so choose, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, www.heartandstroke.ca .

S OBITUARY S Moffatt, Dick (Richard Wilson) 1943 – 2020 Dick Moffatt (Richard Wilson) age 76, of Fairmont Hot Springs passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 11, 2020.

He was born Dec. 1, 1943 in Whitby, North Riding, Yorkshire, England. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Tess, his children; Amanda (Prince Rupert) and Darcy (Calgary); his brother Christopher (Sharon) of Manitou Beach, Sask., sisters and brothers in law; numerous neices and nephews and British cousins. Dick has been a resident of the valley since 2002 after retiring from a warehousing position in Calgary.

He enjoyed the new challenge of learning to drive truck for Chris Ivy and Max Helmer for a few years. Since 2004 he has been active in the Windermere Valley Shared Ministry and more recently, the local Masonic Lodge.

A service will be held Saturday, February 22 at 2:30 pm at Christ Church Trinity (110 – 7 Ave. Invermere). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Windermere Valley Shared Ministry (WVSM) Memorial Fund, The Invermere Health Care Auxiliary (Room #7), or the Terry Fox Foundation.

Jeers to the inconsiderate people who leave the lights on well past 10 p.m. They shine directly into people’s homes - people who need to sleep for work and health. Double Jeers to whoever did not install a timer with a shutoff so they would go off automatically at 10 p.m.

Cheers to the amazing group of people that make up the Invermere Veterinary Hospital staff. Your loan of a set of wheels for our dog who is suffering from partial paralysis has given him a new lease on life! He still lives for a daily walk. You’ve touched our hearts. Much appreciated!

Cheers to the kindhearted absolute legends who returned my muddy red wallet to the RCMP. And that’s the beauty of a small town like Invermere! I hope karma treats you well.

Jeers to the dog owner that kicked, slapped and yelled at his dog at Kinsmen Beach after it chased some deer, then after putting its leash on, lifted it into the air. This was excessive and amounts to animal cruelty. The dog was doing what most dogs will do, BUT... does it know now that it’s not supposed to do that?

Maybe if it had been on a leash in the first place, this wouldn’t have happened.

Reporting to Manager of Territorial Operations, the Referrals Clerk is responsible for providing a variety of administrative and technical services related to lands and natural resources. QUALIFICATIONS • A High-school diploma.

• Ability to operate Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Google Earth.

• Post-secondary training in a diploma program or undergraduate degree in a related field such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Aboriginal Studies, Natural Resources, Environmental management, or related field is an asset.

• A valid B.C. driver’s license and a reliable vehicle.

• Must pass a criminal record check.

• Preference will be given to candidates with experience specific to First Nations and British Columbia.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES • Knowledge and experience with traditional knowledge mapping and information management.

• Basic understanding of provincial and federal regulatory processes related to resource management and the crown consultation process.

• Experience with First Nation referrals and the BC referrals process.

• Ability to identify opportunities for SIB when reviewing referrals.

The way, the truth, the life

By Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian Fellowship Church The Christian faith has been likened to a journey.

In Luke 24 verses 13-35 we can read about two of Jesus’s disciples walking on the road to Emmaus. They are discussing the death of Jesus, as they travel along. Jesus Himself draws near and begins walking and talking with them. At first they didn’t recognize Him, and they discussed all the goings on over the past few days.

Let’s look at what happens in verses 30-32: “And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?”

The two disciples were on a journey. They were confused and didn’t know what was going on.

They were looking for a reason, they were trying to make sense out of what had happened in their lives.

And they found it when the Risen Christ was revealed to them.

Life is a journey, a lot of that journey is confusing and we aren’t sure why this or that is happening to us, sometimes it just doesn’t make sense, but like the chorus from the old pop song says: “Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the water. Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea. Take a look at yourself and you can look at others differently by putting your hand in the hand of the man from Galilee.”

As we put our trust in the Lord, as we seek Him and as we study His word, as we put our hand in His, He will calm the troubles in our lives, He will be there to take us through.

So today if you have something on your mind, if you are confused about what is happening in your life, if you don’t feel quite as close to the Lord as you once were, if the fire seems to be going out, take the time, to reach out to Jesus.

He promises us in John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

Minor hockey minute: Atom A in first Submitted by Windermere Minor Hockey Society The Atom A played a league game against Fernie and won 6-4. This puts the team in first place in the league. Jake Gramlich (pictured) scored three goals for a hat trick. Other goals were scored by Cooper Cote, Liam Gallaway and Tobin Donahue. The team will be playing for the banner in two weeks, hoping to bring it home.

PeeWee B played their last league games this weekend. They played in Fernie on Saturday losing 9-1. On Sunday they played two games against Glacier in Whitefish. The games were hard fought but the boys lost both games 4-3. Their improvement in play on Sunday was tremendous as the Glacier team is the strongest in the league. Banner is February 28 weekend.

In the third on a few very weird and not friendly puck bounces to the Rockies, the visitors would score three and add an empty net goal despite being outshot in the period 14 – 8.

Rockies showed their ability to play and out compete the visitors this night but were not rewarded for their efforts outshooting the visitors 40 to 27.

The Rockies’ next home game and regular season play final game will be February 21 against the Golden Rockets. It will be a night where the Rockies host the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley and will be making a donation. The Rockies’ half of the proceeds of the 50/50 draw will also be donated to this worthy cause.

Come on out on Friday, February 21 and cheer your home town team on and show your Rockies pride as they head into the playoffs!

The Columbia Valley Rockies played two division rivals this weekend on the road in Kimberley and at home against Fernie.

The Rockies took to the ice on Friday in the unfriendly confines of the Nitros. Unfortunately on this night puck luck was not to be on their side. Kimberley opened with two goals before the Rockies’ Gavin Fleck was able to answer for the Rockies. Kimberley would go on to score four more unanswered goals in a penalty-filled match that had tempers flared on both side.

On Saturday night the visiting Ghostriders would come to the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena, and the crowd kept growing in size during the game. The fans know the playoffs are getting closer and closer. The Rockies outshot the visitors but could not have the luck they wanted. In the first period the Rockies outshot their visitors 12 to 9.
