The Fairmont Business Association (FBA) met on Monday, February 3 at the Fairmont Lions Hall to discuss how to best support the Fairmont Hot Springs business community.

Rosemary Stuart updated the group on the activities of the Columbia Valley Community Economic Development Advisory Commission. There were also updates on Valley Visitor Services, the upcoming Mexican Fiesta fundraising event, transit, and the Columbia Valley Airport Society. The FBA meets the first Monday of every month.

A large group of very keen food business leaders were in the Columbia Valley on February 4 and 5 to hear from Greg McLaren and Sylvia Chong of #FarmFoodDrink.

Snolf The annual Snolf tournament returned in 2020 after a few years on hiatus as weather conditions had not been acceptable for older people to play in the snow. The tournament took place at the beach area of Columere Park at “high noon” on Superbowl Sunday. The winner was Murray Boyarski. Snolf is played using three woods and tennis balls.

VALLEY NEWS Invermere asks for James Chabot park back from province

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com The District of Invermere, which sometimes goes by the moniker Invermere on the Lake, could see its lakeside parkland improve considerably in coming years.

Coinciding with the eventual development of the Lake Windermere Resort lands in Athalmer, Invermere council members are now seeking to make James Chabot Provincial Park part of the district. Council voted unanimously at its Tuesday, January 28 meeting to send a formal letter of interest to the Ministry of Environment asking that the district be gifted the lakeside provincial park, which – although it falls under provincial management – sits entirely within the district. The move was spurred by an ever-increasing number of complaints over the past two decades to the district over the declining quality of facilities and level of service at the park and its beach, leaving District of Invermere staff in the unenviable position of having to repeatedly explain to the complainants that there’s little the district can do since it does not own the park.

Council members had already broached the topic with the Ministry of Environment at this past fall’s Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) meeting, and at two other meetings since then.

“I have to emphasize that this is still just very preliminary. We are in early discussions (with the ministry), but it is our intent to take back this park,” Invermere mayor Al Miller told the Pioneer, speaking the week after the meeting. “It basically comes down to the state of the park. We’ve invested heavily in the Kinsmen Beach area with a

lot of infrastructure and other upgrades. It’s very busy, and that’s a good sign. It shows people like the lake. But there’s another beach at James Chabot, and it’s not in as good shape and it’s not as busy. People don’t seem to enjoy going there as much. We feel if we put money into it, we can create something special down there.”

Miller cited the complaints the district gets.

“It’s problematic. There are two beaches in town. It’s logical to assume they both belong to the district, but one doesn’t,” he said. “Most of the calls are along the lines of the washrooms need repair, or other maintenance upkeep has been neglected. We just feel that if we (the district) can go a better job of keeping up with that, then everybody will benefit.”

The land was designated as a provincial park decades ago, and named after local long-serving MLA James Chabot. Miller outlined that the park being near the as-yet-undeveloped Lake Windermere Resort lands presents the district with a unique opportunity.

“If we can bring it (James Chabot) in conjunction with the Lake Windermere Resort lands, we could theoretically see park space stretching from the train tracks right through to the bridge,” he said.

Miller said that, although things are still preliminary, in the few meetings Invermere officials have had with the Ministry of Environment, the ministry has seemed amenable to the idea.

He added that the process, if it goes ahead, would likely take at least a year to a year and a half.

The band built eight new homes with eight more to come, is getting a waterline to run to the north end of the reserve and is looking into locations for a hall.

The band is also involved in safety conversations related to construction along Highway 93/95.

“There’s going to be a mountain of change,” she said. “We’re starting to be less shy.”

She said the First Nation has been approved for a Ktunaxa language hub and that “it’s going to take the whole valley” to help revive the language.

In response to an audience question about indigenous tourism opportunities, she said it’s something the First Nation is working on with the Lakeshore Resort and Campground and other opportunities.

“For ourselves, we’re just starting . . . We ourselves are just healing,” she said. “We’re still struggling with people starving, housing (and their) hierarchy of needs.”

Invermere Al Miller, mayor of the District of Invermere, said: “I’ve been able to have the hands on the steering wheel for a year now and it’s been fun.”

This past week, February 3 through February 9, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 50 calls for service. The following is a summary of some of the files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, February 3 at about 2:40 p.m. a male reportedly stole liquor from a grocery store in Fairmont Hot Springs before departing in a pickup truck. Police located the suspect truck in Invermere and identified the driver. The male was banned from returning to the store and will also be facing theft charges.

• On Thursday, February 6 at 3:00 p.m. Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of squatters on a property in Canal Flats. Police attended and discovered a

male and female had been residing in a travel trailer on private property against the owner’s wishes. Police spoke to the male and female who agreed to remove their trailer from the property.

• On Saturday, February 8 a resident of Edgewater reported someone had gone into his truck sometime overnight and stole cash from his wallet, a computer interface device and a snowmobile helmet.

There was no evidence of forced entry to the truck.

• On Saturday, February 8 at about 8:15 p.m. Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a hit and run. The driver of a pickup truck reported she was driving up Horsethief Fire Service Road when a white pickup with a sled deck struck her driver’s side mirror and failed to stop. The truck that failed to stop was driven by a male wearing a Carhart jacket and a baseball cap.

He also shared that his housing task force is moving forward.

Surprise pending Miller said Shuswap Indian Band and the District of Invermere are working on a secret big-deal collaboration, but had no information to share at this point. Stay tuned.

Area F Susan Clovechok, Area F director, said she is involved in working towards a diversified economy, supporting a local food hub initiative and looking to keep the Fairmont airport operational. “It’s a critical community asset,” she said of the airport.

Vivek Sharma, CEO of Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, used the question and answer period to voice his

support for a diversified economy so the valley wouldn’t be so dependant on visitors from Alberta. Economic development should be addressed as a valley, not as individual communities, he said.

Area G Gerry Wilkie raved about how well folks in the valley are getting along and supporting each other.

“There’s a real strong sense of optimism here, and I think we’re coalescing as a valley,” he said. “I really am proud to be a part of that.”

He highlighted two big projects: updating the Steamboat Jubilee community plan and developing the Columbia Valley Recreation Access Management Plan.

“We’ve been a little irresponsible touting the valley as a mecca for outdoor recreation when we don’t have a plan,” adding he’s glad that planning is underway.

As his time at the podium wound down, he said: “I urge us all to acknowledge the imperative of limits to growth and our moral responsibility to conserve in all endeavours.”

Local youth to compete at BC Winter Games

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com Lenni Stich had only a small window of time to chat before putting his skis back on and getting to work. The 14 year old has been training for up to 10 hours a week to prepare for his cross-country ski debut at the BC Winter Games in Fort St. John next week, and is pretty eager to head to the races.

It’s not Lenni’s first time competing at the provincial level (his earlier stint was with judo), but it’s his first time skiing against the fastest kids from all across B.C..

“It’s hard and you’re like out of breath and suffering all the time, but it’s worth it.”

Lenni Stich, Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club Lenni said he’s looking forward to racing, spending time with his teammates at the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club and making new friends.

“You have to be pretty fit for (ski racing),” he said. “It takes a lot of grit. It’s hard and you’re like out of breath and suffering all the time but it’s worth it.”

His friends and the views they access together are part of what makes his sport worth the sweat.

“We’re pretty close, all of us. We just always make it fun,” he said. “It’s really nice ’cause were outside and it’s just really nice and beautiful. It’s kind of this feeling of happiness. It’s really fun and happy.”

Locals going to the BC Winter Games in Fort St. John on February 20-23 include (figure skating) Ocea Dubray; (judo) Maya den Otter, Michael Johnson and Teigan Bixby; (gymnastics) Emilie Cartier, Lauren Irwin and coach Alyssa Chaykowski; (cross country skiing) Virginia Denchuck, Emmylou Grieve, Carly Nickurak and Lenni Stich.

Submitted photo Lenni will compete in classic skiing as well as skate skiing at the games. Even though skate skiing is faster – and he’s almost twice as quick that way – he prefers classic skiing.

“Classic is easier and you have more control,” he said.

Lenni is hoping for a top-three finish when he and

his teammates – Virginia Denchuck, Emmylou Grieve and Carly Nickurak – hit the tracks.

Joining the skiers to compete at the BC Winter Games are: Maya den Otter, Michael Johnson and Teigan Bixby (judo); Emilie Cartier and Lauren Irwin (gymnastics); and Ocea Dubray (figure skating).

PERSPECTIVE Love, marriage and a baby carriage?

By Lorene Keitch Special to the Pioneer Love is in the air this time of year. But what once was a given – first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage – has shifted not only in Canada, but in the Columbia Valley too.

The 2016 census confirmed what, anecdotally, many of us already knew. More couples are choosing to remain childless than ever before.

Across the nation, 51.1 per cent of couples have children and 48.9 do not.

B.C.’s statistics are reversed, with 48.1 per cent with children and 51.9 per cent without.

The highest percentage of families with children in our valley is Canal Flats, with 43.3 per cent of couples having kids (80 with, 105 without).

The runner-up is Invermere, which counted 42.6 per cent of couples with kids (350 with, 470 without).

Radium has 31.1 per cent couples with kids (70 with, 155 without).

The community with the least amount of pitter-patters of little feet is Fairmont, with only 21.4 per cent of couples with kids (30 with, 110 without).

If you don’t have kids and are not in a relationship, no need to despair either this Valentines. More adults are living alone now too.

The same country-wide census showed 13.9 per cent of adults in Canada now live alone (compared to 1.8 per cent in 1951).

That means there’s still some fish waiting to be caught, for those lonely hearts out by themselves in the sea of love.

If you’re alone this Valentine’s Day, know you’re not alone across the country.

If you’re in a relationship and have no kids, you’re in good company too.

And if you’re half of a couple with children afoot, commiserate with the rest of us who will contemplate whether it’s really worth paying a babysitter to go out for a romantic dinner, or to just pick up a bottle of wine and toast to another year together once the kids are finally asleep.

Local confused by ‘Migrant’s’ letter Dear Editor: I read the January 30 letter to the editor ‘Migrant opposed to Immigration’ with disappointment, frustration and perhaps amusement. I feel obliged to ask questions on behalf of all the ‘wholesome, peaceful locals.’

Can you please provide us with a list of the thousands of companies in the valley that are going to sponsor these ‘thousands’ of immigrants?

What obligations do these companies have to new employees? Are they allowed to house them in the wetlands? Is that why you are concerned that these new visitors will destroy wildlife habitat?

When you retired here and developed your ‘long-standing heartfelt connection’ to the land, did you hope no one else would come after you? In fact, our local economy is quite dependent on the construction of new homes.

Can you tell us about the rural area that was overwhelmed with mass migration that you mentioned in your letter? Were you thinking about the migrants that the government encouraged to come to Canada in the late 1800s and early 1900s? That actually worked out for the best. In fact, the economy of Canada was built by these hard-working immigrants. Locally we can see how much immigration and migration have had a positive effect on businesses and growth in all sectors.

I am pretty sure that immigrants that are being ‘sponsored’ by businesses are not being ‘foisted’ upon us by the government as you say; they are being invited to our community. Businesses require their expertise or labour to grow.

I think you are correct: a conversation about the value of growing a local population is important. In fact, there have been studies on how we can encourage people to move to and start businesses in our area. This is vital to our success.

LETTERS MLA Clovechok critical of premier

Dear Editor: After almost three years in office, Premier John Horgan finally took his first tour to a region (northern B.C.) that has seen a lot of hardship over the past year.

After months of dwindling job numbers, countless setbacks for a forestry sector in crisis, to a sham-filled caribou consultation, northern B.C. residents had hoped to hear some good news from their Premier.

However, not only did relief not materialize during his tour, John Horgan doubled down on his disconnect through missed opportunities and several tone-deaf comments.

At a roundtable meeting of northern mayors, the Premier remarked that “quite frankly we don’t hear from [Opposition MLAs] about the positive initiatives that are happening in the community.”

This assertion is just flat-out false — I’d instead argue that perhaps the Premier has just failed to listen to the concerns of British Columbians outside of NDP-held ridings.

As an opposition MLA, I have worked on a number of significant matters including: making sure that Invermere (and our headwater communities) were added to the list of Columbia River Treaty public meetings; working with Golden constituents and the Town on addressing ground water extraction for commercial bottling; working with the City of Kimberley on a wildfire interface pilot committee; making sure the Premier included Revelstoke during the government’s Caribou Recovery public meeting; informing the government of overlooked concerns from our communities along the Hwy #1 closure/detour route; to continuously working at getting our border residents access to health care that is closest to their support system; and to highlighting my Kimberley constituency office as the first carbon-neutral MLA office in the Province — I am proud to represent Columbia River-Revelstoke.

Our region is faring well, however, you don’t need to look far to see that so many of our rural communities in B.C. are struggling. The NDP has failed to provide any meaningful assistance to the struggling inter-connected forestry sector. Job numbers have seen a steady decline over the past seven months, the Rural Dividend Fund (that supplied many of our riding’s critical and innovative projects over the years) has been suspended for rural B.C., and lastly, reliable infrastructure jobs have been put in jeopardy due to the government’s unnecessary Community Benefits Agreements (CBA) scheme.

The Illecillewaet highway project first announced in 2015 by our previous government was set to cost $35 million. Now almost five years later, thanks to the NDP’s very short list of approved unions, the cost is 143 per cent higher than we budgeted.

The Kicking Horse Canyon project has suffered through many delays, despite being of critical importance to my constituents safety, and the CBA framework has pushed costs associated with the project by adding another $150 million onto the budget.

Costs are rising, key promises aren’t being fulfilled, and people need action. When is John Horgan going to listen to issues that matter to rural British Columbians?

Submitted by Coach Hermann Mauthner Invermere Judo BC Judo requires that BC Winter Games qualifiers compete at the Provincial Championships, this year held in Kamloops.

The Invermere Judo Club has three candidates for the BC Games and one for the Canadian Championships. Present were also the parents, and coaches Mark Digney and myself. A heartfelt thank-you for driving the athletes to the tournament in severe winter conditions.

First up was Teigan Bixby, who had to compete in round-robin style and returned with a well-earned silver medal. Maya den Otter, with two wins and two losses, returned with a bronze medal. Michael Johnson showed his determination and received a bronze medal. This was a great result for our BC Games competitors. The games will take place February 19 to 23 in Fort St. John.

Graham Norquay, now a sho dan, competed in an all black belt division, showing his skill and speed and winning a silver medal.

Congratulations to all athletes: you demonstrated your skill and determination at the provincial championship. We wish you a joyful experience and success at the games.

Our congratulations and appreciation to B.C Judo and the Kamloops judo clubs for a well-organized tournament.

Last weekend the PeeWee B team travelled to Sparwood to play league games against Creston and Elk Valley. In the first game against Creston on Saturday they got whomped 10-0. But after a break and some video breakdown by coach Ian, they came back to win the evening game against Creston 4-0. They were led by goalie Cohen Lawrick who made over 50 saves in the shutout and a strong game defensively by all. The win included a pair of empty net goals. On Sunday they faced Elk Valley and led by 3-0 after the first period, 5-0 after the second, and wound up with a 7-0 win. Cohen had the shutout again. The goals and assists for both wins were spread throughout the entire lineup. Next weekend they head to Fernie on Saturday, and Whitefish, Montana on Sunday to play three league games in two days.

The PeeWee A team played in a Calgary Tier 1 tournament in Canal Flats. The team is normally competitive at a Tier 2 level (and is classified as Tier 4) so this was a big leap for the team.

They lost 4-3 to Okotoks, 7-6 to Simons Valley,

5-3 to the Knights and tied Glen Lake 4-4.

While there were no wins, the team played extremely well, being competitive in all four games, and even tying one. Tier 1 is the top level of Club teams in Calgary. Players of the Games were Karson Schick, Jack McAffer, Caden Williams and Ryan Digney. Jesse McIntosh had a solid weekend in net.

The Atom A played in Cranbrook at Western Financial Place on Saturday. They played a strong game, winning 7-1. Goals were scored by Ryker Chasse, Tobin Donahue, Liam Galloway, Tanner Cropley, Jake Gramlich, Memphis Martin and Cooper Cote: Ryker, Memphis (2), and Jake all had assists as well.

The defence of Ryker, Tyler Mcgowan, Gage Nyuli, and Liam assisted Myan Twogood to keep Cranbrook from scoring.

The Bantam team has won the right to represent the East Kootenays at the Provincial Championship in Vanderhoof in March. They are raising money to assist in their travel. So far they have had a bottle drive and are sponsoring a Valentine’s Dance on February 15 at 7 p.m.. It will be held at the Wilmer Hall and tickets are available at the Trading Post. Have fun and support the team!

Hitting the high notes: Love in the mountains

By Signe Olynyk Special to the Pioneer Carol and Gerry Wilkie are still making beautiful music together after more than 58 years of marriage. With Valentine’s Day coming up and thoughts of romance in the air, the couple shared their story and some advice on what has led to their long and inspiring love story.

The duo met while working at the Banff Center in the summer of 1961. Gerry was the grounds supervisor, and he liked to sing while he worked. Carol Ross was a talented soprano, visiting from Oregon, who came to the mountains on a music tour. While walking one day, she heard a deep baritone song rumbling through the mountain air, and followed that sound to meet the man behind the beautiful voice.

When Gerry turned and met the admiring woman, he was struck by how attractive she was. But it was more than that. She was intelligent and talented and he liked her easygoing personality – words he uses to describe her, even today. Conversation came easily to them both, and from that moment the couple spent many hours sitting in the mountain sunshine sharing their thoughts, while their attraction grew.

If you ask Carol, she will say she was smitten and pursued Gerry unabashedly. Gerry said it was the other way around. Either way, neither seemed to mind.

The couple were soon married and began their lives together. They had a son and daughter, and, eventually, a handful of grandchildren. They lived in Vancouver and briefly in Alberta. But the mountains continued to beckon. They would often go on family vacations with good friends who had a cabin in Windermere, and sometimes Gerry would go duck hunting with friends in the Spillimacheen area. They enjoyed the warmer climate of the Columbia Valley, and it wasn’t long before they were considering a home in the area.

After buying property in Edgewater, they eventually rebuilt their home. Carol is well known for giving free piano lessons from her home and for her magnificent soprano voice. She played the violin and viola in orchestras, sang, and taught herself to play piano. Gerry is an area director for the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK), and an active community member who pursues conservation and a better way of life for the people and wildlife who call the Columbia Valley home.

Gerry was a little hesitant to share their love story. He said it seemed a bit embarrassing. After all, why is it so difficult for people to stay in love and remain committed to one another? Why are long-term, loving relationships, like Gerry and Carol’s marriage, the exception?

The couple are in their late seventies now, and they attribute the success of their life together to several things.

“Communication is not about who is right or who is wrong,” said Carol. “It’s about how someone is feeling, and sharing that with one another so that everyone feels heard and understood.”

Gerry agreed with his bride, and said that love is just part of the glue needed to hold a relationship together.

“True respect for one another is most vital.”

Even after all this time, they are still best friends and crave each other’s company.

Carol has a harder time getting around than she used to but she still drives, and they help each other as best they can. Their connection, naturally, has deepened over time in the way that a long, shared history allows.

Once in a while, they still sing together. But even through the long, snowy days of winter, the music they make together continues – even when it is quiet.

Wizard of the woods reimagined

By Lorene Keitch Special to the Pioneer “Not that long ago, in a distant land, on top of a short mountain, there was a wizened old house by a wizened old tree with a wizened old man and his wizened old wife.”

So starts a newly-released book by local author Thomas R. Davis. The children’s fairy tale was inspired by the valley’s own wizard Rolf Heer. Heer’s eccentric Home Of A Thousand faces in Radium Hot Springs entranced visitors for years, becoming a foundational force in the culture of Radium. A fire in 2018 swept away the towering structure but Heer and his pointy red hat were saved from the flames that engulfed his entire life’s work.

Davis happened to drive by Heer’s home in the fire’s aftermath when the tinder structure was still smouldering in a charcoal heap on the hard November ground. He thought about the Radium wizard and decided to write a book loosely based on Heer’s life, up to and including the house fire.

“Because of him being a wizard per se, I had him instill life into all these carvings,” Davis said of his story.

One of the carvings in the story is wicked and ends up causing the house fire by the story’s end.

The men are not friends, Davis said, but Heer is a well-known local celebrity and he used to pop into Davis’s restaurant Tin Peaks (now Hopkins Harvest) years ago where they would shoot the breeze. (“You don’t necessarily have to be a friend of somebody to like them,” Davis remarked.) The author did get permission from the wizard to write the story and sent him a final draft but

The book took “forever” to complete, Davis said.

“It’s a sporadic thing; it’s not like a 9 to 5 job where I sit down. There’s a lot of looking, thinking – you might be driving along and, once you have a thought in your

head, you have to pull over and write it down – that type of thing.”

Wizard of the Woods was released in early December and is available for sale at the Invermere Public Library and The Mountain Hub for $15.

Ullr brings avalanche workshop to Invermere Sponsored content by Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Columbia Valley is a winter backcountry paradise, no question about it, so it’s no surprise that a great many local residents (and no shortage of visitors) venture into the mountains to ski and snowmobile. There’s plenty of fun to be had, but potential risks.

To help raise awareness about these risks and keep people safe in the backcountry, Ullr Bar is holding a midwinter Backcountry Avalanche Workshop on Saturday, February 22. The evening event will run for two hours, and then Kootenay stoke folk sensation Shred Kelly will play.

“We’ll have all the top avalanche people in the country here, and the idea is to help people snowmobiling, skiing or otherwise in the backcountry be as safe as they can be,” said Ullr co-owner Richard Matthews, adding he has friends that work as backcountry guides who realized that once upon a time there were such workshops in the Columbia Valley on a fairly regular basis, but that there hasn’t been one in Invermere in at least five years.

A few years back, Matthews had three friends caught in three different avalanches over a three-year span, each with devastating injuries.

“Thankfully they are all alive, but they are dealing with lifelong consequences, so I’ve seen firsthand that avalanche safety is of the utmost importance,” he said.

“We love living in B.C., and we love having fun, but we love keeping our friends safe most.”

The free avalanche workshop will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.. The first hour will

see Avalanche Canada snow technicians doing a presentation, covering topics such as gear, avalanche beacons, avalanche forecasting and weather and more, then the second hour will be a chance for the public to ask questions and talk with avalanche professionals.

“We’re trying to create as much avalanche awareness as we can in the community,” said Matthews.

There will be information available on the Avalanche Skills Level 1, 2 and 3 courses and Golden-based-company Stay Wild Backcountry Skills, which offers those courses (as well as guided backcountry tours in the Columbia Valley) will have a booth at the event, as will the Lady Alliance, which offers all-female tours in the backcountry.

Other companies with a presence at the event include the BooDoo Crew (a snowmobile advocacy and apparel group), which will have plenty of free gear and swag on offer, and Bragg Creek-based Snoday Spirits craft distillery, which has recently released a new vodka and gin and will be giving away free avalanche whistles.

After the avalanche session is done, Shred Kelly will take the stage at 10 p.m. with banjos wailing, for one of their classic high energy shows.

“They are a pretty massive band in the Kootenays, and they really bring a massively fun element to all their shows,” said Matthews. “It seemed like a really great way to round the evening out.”

The Backcountry Avalanche Workshop (from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) is free and all-ages. The Shred Kelly show will have a $10 cover charge, and is adults only.

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com Scott Ward, a retired park warden, has the craziest stories – about mountain rescues, tracking fugitives through the woods and all sorts of derring-do – and has set some of his wildest tales to music.

From their humble start at a warden lodge that led them to concert halls, he and two of his backcountry colleagues – Bradley Bischoff and Ray Schmidt – found such appreciative audiences that The Wardens are now on their fourth album.

Ward said they offer a “behind the scenes look at what it was like to be a park warden” and set their career exploits and backcountry lore to the beat.

“It keeps people very interested. It’s not just ‘I’m telling songs about my girlfriend who left me last month’ and, you know, the same old stuff. I would say it’s songs about a mountain rescue leader in Banff and he survived the biggest fall in North American mountaineering accident history and fell 2,000 feet,” he said.

“It’s just a lot more interesting than a lot of singer-songwriter stuff you would hear ... Some of it’s our experience working in the backcountry or with horses and mountain culture and wildlife, and other songs are kind of general mountain culture or songs about the land.”

Ward has no shortage of stories from his 35 years of service where he was involved in “missing-person searches, criminal investigations, drug searches, tracking down fugitives, all that good stuff.”

Here’s one of his stories: “One guy was an escaped prisoner I tracked from the train station in Banff all the way to Johnson Canyon before I caught him.”

Before you can catch your breath, the master stoyteller rattles off another. This time a group of youth roughed up an elderly couple and stole their motorhome. But no worries, Ward went to the rescue.

“I ended up tracking all four of them and arresting them,” he said.

Ward estimates that he caught around 25 people in partnership with one of his search dogs.

While he worked with the RCMP, he said often the officers couldn’t keep up with his dog so Ward would race off after the dog, catch the suspects and hand them over to face the music.

Speaking of music, Ward said his band has been lucky to be so well received, but that he thinks the “mesmerizing tales, quality music” and accompanying slideshow of visual images are part of their success.

So is their “cowboy mentality where you don’t complain about things and just kind of get on with the job,” he said. “That’s kind of spilled over to the three of us in the band too. We have some pretty long days driving and little sleep sometimes and stressful times in concerts and stuff, but we don’t complain. We just carry on and keep doing it.”

If making music sounds way easier than chasing bad guys across mountains and rescuing wayward adventurers, Ward is clear that it’s a tie.

“The music career has been just as challenging,” he said, adding that the teamwork and quick thinking the trio needed as wardens are also essential for them as performers.

The Wardens will be performing at Copper Point Golf Club at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 20. The show and a buffet-style dinner is $64 per person.

“Their music is unbelievably enchanting,” said Katie Israelson, a manager at Copper Point Golf Club who booked the show. “Securing the performance was purely a stroke of luck for me ... It just so happened that they knew my father and uncle, back when they worked as National Park wardens in Jasper, Banff, Yoho and Kootenay Parks. And they were passing through town between performances.”

Don’t miss: Free fishing day The Lake Windermere and District Rod and Gun Club invites everyone to join us at the club’s ice fishing hut at Lake Lillian on Saturday, February 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a free Family Ice Fishing Adventure Day. Come out to enjoy the outdoors, experience ice fishing, learn new things and have fun. Head for the green ice fishing hut set up not far from the shore of the Recreational Site. We will have several holes already drilled for you to start fishing, and members will be available to help you get set up. Polar Bear Plunge Jump into the freezing-cold Lake Windermere to raise funds for the Recreation Adapted Society (RAD). There will also be hot dogs, drinks and a hot tub so you can get your limbs back to human temperature.

February is a great month … longer days, Family Day weekend and Artym Gallery opening the Erica Hawkes show at the Invermere location. Starting Saturday, February 15 at 10 a.m., the show will continue to February 21.

Born and raised in Northern B.C., Hawkes studied design in Colorado at the Institute of Art in Denver, and then finished her degree in Vancouver at VCC. Combining styles from two different groups, the Art Nouveau movement (1890-1910) and Canada’s Group of Seven (1920-1933), Hawkes has created the Nouveau 7, which is something unique to her and rapidly gain-

ing popularity with both painters and collectors. The resulting acrylic works are composed of flowing lines separating blocks of colour. Currently, Hawkes is painting strong Western Canadian landscapes featuring vibrant skies with rolling hills and mountains in the foreground.

Hawkes has also dabbled with photography, India inks, oils, and graphite. “I love everything about art, from taking photographs for future works, to the sketching and final laying of paint. To create something beautiful is always my aim. I know I will always explore as I develop in my career as an artist; there is always something new to learn!”

Weekly Whiteway Report “While the warm weather did some significant damage to the Lake Windermere Whiteway, our maintenance team has been working hard to get it back into better conditions. We’ve spent at least two full days out on the scraper improving the surface of the ice,” said Shannon McGinty, Lake Windermere Whiteway Ambassador. “Skating is currently in good condition. Ski tracks will be set and maintained as the snow allows.”

The Columbia Valley Community Foundation (CVCF) is excited to share the On the Table report with residents and guests to the Columbia Valley. This report is based on conversations held throughout the Columbia Valley from Canal Flats to Spillimacheen in the fall of 2019.

Dean Midyette, chair of the foundation, said: “Information in this report captures people’s opinions on a variety of topics ranging from the economy to the environment and everything in between.”

Further, the report identifies vital actions that community groups, individuals and all levels of government can take the lead on.

On the Table program coordinator Wendy Booth said: “It was fascinating to watch the conversations move towards possible solutions to complex long-standing challenges in the Columbia Valley. It was a pleasure to be part of those conversations.”

She said housing was discussed at each meeting. “It proved to me how important housing is and how it is entwined with so many other aspects of our lives.”

Another commonality at all of the meetings was that: “Each session was positive in terms of why people chose to live in the Columbia Valley and what makes it so special; it really is the people.”

She further stated that: “Respecting and protecting our natural environment is closely linked to economic vitality of the valley. Being the only section of the Columbia River that is in its natural state is cause for celebration.”

Submitted by the Columbia Valley Rockies The Columbia Valley Rockies continued their battles with the Golden Rockets this past Friday night. Travelling up to the Plywood Palace they entered the home barn of the Rockets.

The Rockies hit the ice in the first period and DOMINATED play, outshooting the home team 18 - 8 with the Rockets’ tendy keeping his team in the competition.

Your Rockies would get on the scoreboard first with a seeing eye point shot delivered from Kyle Lawrence on a chip back to him from Eric Lloyd. However, as has happened in the past Rockies games, despite being outshot the competition would lead at the end of the first by a score of 2-1.

The second period would see both teams trade goals with the Rockies tying it up at the 13:37 mark by Hunter Rambow on a slick feed by Jonathan Milligan. The home team though would not be denied, scoring 10 minutes later and taking a 3-2 lead in the dressing room at the end of second.

The third saw the home team pressing the Rockies and at times keeping them captive in their defensive end. The Rockies would answer first on a power play that had some great puck movement and finished with Loclyn Kabatoff going bar down on two quick passes from Jonathan Milligan and Brennan Nelson from low in the crease. The home team would not be denied as a Rockies player pinched at center ice and got caught. The Rockets would jump on it, drive hard to the net and roof it above the glove hand of Riley Wallace.

Golden kept their slim hopes of a playoff spot alive, and the Rockies came home determined to have a better effort against the Kelowna Chiefs on Saturday.

On Saturday your Rockies took to the ice against the visiting Kelowna Chiefs.

From the start the Rockies were a determined and focused club. The play went from end to end with both teams having opportunities to open a lead. Alas it would be your Rockies as Eric Lloyd would find himself open in front of the visiting team net

and deftly slid one through for a 1 to 0 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the first. The Rockies would close out and take that lead into the dressing room.

The second period saw Bretton Park for the Rockies put on a terrific display of netminding and the period ended with your Rockies hanging on to their 1-0 lead.

In the third the visiting team pressed hard and on a turnover were able to tie the score: this one would go to overtime. As the teams met at center ice for a 4 on 4 the crowd inched forward on their seats and collectively held their breath as your Rockies went on the offensive. Both teams had numerous opportunities with Bretton Park stoning a Chiefs player on a breakaway. This one was going to double OT. As the puck was dropped for the 3 on 3 action your Rockies seemed to take more of an advantage in play and peppered the visiting goalie with shots. At the 3:44 mark

Every elementary and primary school in the valley participated in this new event.

Over 600 children read together during the Great Big Buddy Read. There were schools in the Elk Valley, Golden and Creston that participated as well. It warmed my heart to see how much joy the buddies were getting from reading with each other. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm from all the schools, principals, teachers, parents and students who participated in this event. It was a great way to celebrate Family Literacy Day. Reading together and aloud helps encourage young children to choose reading as an activity, as well as builds early literacy skills that are so important to school success.

Rod and Gun club dinner and dance

By Dauna Ditson dauna@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Lake Windermere and District Rod and Gun Club is turning 101 and invites you to raise a fork to celebrate. The bounty up for eats at the 2020 banquet will include both predator and prey with cougar, mountain sheep and mule deer served up. For less wild tastes, guests can also enjoy local beef.

“Some of the meat came from members who had a successful hunt and the rest from road-killed animals,” said organizer Rick Hoar. “The mountain sheep was killed on the highway near Radium and the cougar by a hunter. We have had both at the banquet before, and the cougar is especially liked.”

The club held its first banquet in 1919, although the feasts came to a stop while the world was at war and during the ’30s. When peace and prosperity returned locally, so did the valley’s banquet. It’s been an annual event since the ’50s.

The long-standing party “allows members to rub shoulders with like-minded people who care about protecting and enhancing the environment as well as provide natural wild meat for their table,” Hoar said.

The banquet will be at the Columbia Valley Centre on Saturday, February 22. The event will run from 5 p.m. to midnight, with Smarty Pants providing live music for the dance.

The Lake Windermere District Rod and Gun Club turns 101 this year. Celebrate at this year’s dinner and dance on Saturday, February 22.

Around the Columbia Valley Canal Flats mill fire Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Services thanked firefighters who joined in to control a large fire in the old Canal Flats planer mill. The fire that started on Monday, February 10 was contained within the old planer mill site, but was expected to take several days to fully extinguish. Brian Fry, who cofounded PodTech, said it’s the second fire at the mill site but that the fire was contained before it could impede PodTech operations.

Besides a brief power outage, he said PodTech was not impacted. “We’re back to business as usual,” he said.

Volunteer tutor recruitment The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) is recruiting volunteer tutors in the community.

They have many learners who are eager to develop their English language skills, improve their reading or writing and get support in navigating the digital world.

If you are interested in this opportunity please come to CBAL’s open house for volunteer tutors on Wednesday, February 19. The open house will run from 4 to 6 p.m. at the CBAL office.

Lorne was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, to Justina and Arthur Toews on April 20th, 1958. Lorne later moved to the Columbia Valley where he spent his years growing up and making life long friends. Lorne and Lisa raised their kids in Edgewater at the Triple L.A.J. Ranch, as he would call it. Later in life Lorne moved to “Slough Side” in Radium, which was not only Lorne’s home but a gathering spot of a multitude of friends and family for numerous occasions.

Dad loved the valley and he was a proud member of the Edgewater Legion. There is not a time we would go anywhere with Dad and he didn’t stop to talk to (and hug) at least 10 people!

Everyone loved Mickey and he will be dearly missed.

Dad was our “Captain”, a proud father and grandfather. Lorne was a great brother, friend, uncle, and cousin. He touched so many people in his life, his absence will leave a void in our hearts.

Mickey leaves to mourn his fantastic wife, Linda, his children, Dwayne (Kristy, Tanner and Shayne), Murray (Robin, Stephanie, Kyle and Nicholas) and Marina (Brian, Zach and Evan), step-daughter Melanie (Craig, Caitlin and Ryan), his siblings Len, Lawrence and Shelley. We couldn’t possibly list all of Dad’s friends, but you know who you are.

You are our “hero and best friend,” dad.

His first love was truck driving and we literally had to pry the keys out of Dad’s hands when it was time to retire. He loved talking on the radio to his trucker friends and being a part of the ‘trucker family.’ He will always be known as “two stack pete with Mickey in the seat”.

When he was asked to service the trucks on Saturdays, he was like a little kid in a candy shop wearing his dirtiest coveralls with grease under his fingernails. Dad was the gentlest of souls and would love to have his family and friends around him. When the conversation would turn away from his direction, he would always try to catch a cat nap. We got such a kick out of hearing him snore in his “sleepy chair” or his favourite chair on the deck. We all loved spending time with Dad on the swing on the front porch watching the amazing view of the mountains while some sipped tea, some drank wine, and others shared Millers.

FAITH Keep on watching

By Matt Moore Lake Windermere Alliance Church I have a two-year-old son and we just recently bought Disney Plus, so we are watching some classic Disney movies from my childhood: movies like Toy Story, Cars, and The Lion King.

Sometimes while watching I feel like I’ve seen this movie a thousand times but still can’t remember what’s about to happen next.

I mean I could guess because every plot is generally the same: guy has girl, guy loses girl and guy gets girl back. The exception is that in a Disney movie, it isn’t always a girl. It may be a racing career or kingdom in Africa.

The point I want to make is that my son has no idea what is about to happen. He still jumps when a bad guy pops out or laughs uncontrollably when Mr. Potato Head’s pieces fall off.

This situation kind of reminds me that if my life was the movie and God was watching it with me, I’m the two-year-old: I get scared, wonder what’s going to happen next and laugh when silly things happen.

There is a part of me that wishes to constantly know what happens next but the only way I will know is if I keep watching, trusting that God knows what’s next.

Keep watching when it’s scary and watching when it’s funny because He is watching with us. Sometimes we face familiar situations, good or bad, enjoyable or stressful, but we still don’t know what the outcome will be.

Psalms 23:4-6 says: “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.

Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life.”

Remember that the Lord is always with us.
