Peddled art helps people pedal The Artym Gallery was all geared up to present Eric Vanderkruk with a cheque for the Columbia Valley Cycling Society. The donation was made possible from the sales of giclées of the cover image from the 2019 Columbia Valley Map Book. Only 100 copies of “Smiling” (in background) by artist Brian Porter are available, and sales have been strong.

“The $1,900 will be put to good use,” said Mr. Vanderkruk. “The support for our non-profit group here in the Valley is fantastic.”

Every year the publisher of the Columbia Valley Map Book and The Artym Gallery select a different not-for-profit group to help raise their funding and awareness.

FireSmart event well-attended

The FireSmart Community Meeting held November 5th at the Columbia Valley Centre was well-attended by 65 keen and concerned residents. Three speakers gave informative presentations on the importance of preparedness to reduce losses from the very real threat of interface wildfires in our community.

Don Mortimer, consultant and owner of Fireline Consulting, presented Invermere’s new Wildfire Emergency Pre Plan and the challenges that local firefighters face in preparing for and responding effectively to wildfires that threaten Invermere properties. Mr. Mortimer gave a better understanding of why effective interface wildfire response depends on the FireSmart mitigations that property owners have implemented on individual properties and neighbourhoods.

His presentation included eye-opening dash cam footage of residents being evacuated from Fort McMurray in 2016.

The footage showed real-time ember ignitions quickly becoming spot fires that initiated the mass destruction.

Alan Westhaver, consultant and owner of FireWise Environmental Consulting, presented important lessons discovered from fire disasters of the past. Alan showed why some homes ignite and others don’t. He taught the basic FireSmart principles that are proven to reduce the risk of losses to neighbourhoods. Starting, most importantly, with a 1.5 metre non-combustible zone that extends around the entire home to reduce the chance of wind-blown embers igniting materials close to our homes.

Our local Wildfire Officer, Steve Levitt with BC Wildfire Services, presented on the importance and need for mo-

tivated groups of residents to take grassroots actions within their neighborhoods to reduce their risk of wildfire losses.

Residents had lots of good questions answered by the speakers and Invermere’s Fire Chief, Jason Roe. Attendees were greeted by Kathleen O’Neill and Ben Mitchell-Banks, co-chairs of the FireSmart Canada Recognized Community of CastleRock Estates, who lent their time and knowledge to enhance the event.

The District of Invermere extends a big thank you to the speakers, volunteers and attendees for making this such a great evening. And to Kicking Horse Coffee for providing delicious coffee for the event. The meeting was a good start to educating our community about the risks of wildfire and the easy and economical actions we can take in our own neighborhoods to reduce losses.

Thanks to Jenna Milne for putting this event together for the community, and District staff member Robert Hall for his technical support. This won’t be the end of the District’s FireSmart activities.

“We want to encourage people to become community leaders when it comes to FireSmart,” says DOI Mayor Al Miller. “We want to continue on our events, because prevention is the only way to tackle it.”

Relearning recycling and tossing in more

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Residents in the Valley are recycling tonnes and doing an exceptional job putting their materials in the right bins since the new Recycle BC Depot opened at the Columbia Valley Landfill in June, said Kevin Paterson, environmental services manager for the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK).

“Certainly the public has really embraced the concept,” he said. “By and large, people are doing really well.”

When the Recycle BC Depot opened, it allowed residents to begin recycling additional materials – like Styrofoam – in exchange for some extra sorting that they can do either at home or once they get to the landfill.

While the yellow-bin system, which has been around for 20 years, doesn’t require sorting, Mr. Paterson said those using the Recycle BC Depot need to split the recyclables they would normally put into a yellow bin into two bins: one for paper products and the other for plastic and metal containers.

The rest of the bins at the depot give residents the opportunity to recycle more than 76 new items that aren’t accepted in the yellow bins. Five new categories of bins exist at the depot: one for coloured Styrofoam, one for white unmarked Styrofoam, one for glass containers, and two for different types of plastic films and assorted extras.

Mr. Paterson said residents can do their sorting in advance or wait until they arrive at the Recycle BC Depot where the bins are marked with lists of accepted materials and pictures.

While the Pioneer was on scene, Paul Neilson from Fairmont came to the depot with a container of plastic films and went from one bin to the next checking for the right place to leave his Twizzler bag and other plastic wraps.

Differentiating between the two types of accepted plastic films is the trickiest thing about the recycling program, Mr. Paterson said, adding that “it’s dead simple” once you get the hang of it.

Basically any plastic film that touches your food – like Mr. Neilson’s Twizzler wrapper – goes in the flexible packaging bin.

The exceptions are bread bags, produce bags and freezer food bags that don’t zip closed. Those materials go in the overwrap bin along with the rest of your plastic films and bags that don’t encase things you’d like to eat.

Mr. Neilson doesn’t mind spending a few minutes checking the signs at the bins as he sorts his plastic wraps.

“It’s great. It’s very handy, and we’re big recyclers,” he said.

Mr. Neilson has been continuing to use the yellow bins and bringing his extra recyclables to the Recycle BC Depot, but Mr. Paterson invites him and everyone else to consider bringing all of their materials to the depot.

While residents pay taxes for the yellow bins, Recycle BC pays RDEK by the tonne of recyclables collected at the depot.

As of November 1st, the Valley had recycled over 47 tonnes at the Recycle BC Depot and earned over $5,000 for it.

“Everything from gum wrappers to bread tags . . . there’s not a lot that we can’t recycle,” he said.

His own trash can looks a lot different than before RDEK opened its first Recycle BC Depot.

“We hardly have any garbage anymore,” he said.

RDEK will be opening Recycle BC Depots in Cranbrook and the Elk Valley over the coming months and intends to do more outreach to make sure residents know what they can recycle once all of the depots are up and running.

While there hasn’t been a formal audit of how well residents are doing at putting their recyclables in the right places, Mr. Paterson is pleased with what he’s seen to date.

“We really applaud the work that our residents are doing at being diligent in sorting their product,” he said. “It’s been, I think, really well received. We’ve certainly had lots of positive feedback from our residents.”

Several residents told the Pioneer that they love the new recycling program.

Judy Dow said: “I think it is great. The people out there have been so helpful and friendly too.”

RCMP Report Submitted by Sgt. Darren Kakuno Detachment Commander Columbia Valley RCMP This past week, November 18th through November 24th, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 49 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to: • On Monday, November 18th, police were called to a residence north of Invermere for a disturbance. Police attended and learned a verbal dispute between two men had escalated to a physical confrontation. Both men separated before police arrived and agreed to avoid contact with each other. • On Tuesday, November 19th at 7:15 a.m., police received a report of an abandoned vehicle on Highway 93 near the Kootenay Park Lodge. Police responded and discovered the vehicle had been stolen from Radium Hot Springs two weeks prior. A set of footprints was located in the snow leading away from the stolen vehicle. A Police Dog Service team responded from Cranbrook and located the suspect who tried to flee by crossing a creek before eventually surrendering to police. The suspect was arrested without incident and held in cells. A 31-yearold male from Cochrane, Alberta has been charged with possession of stolen property and two counts of breach of probation. • On Wednesday, November 20th, police recovered a stolen 2007 Ford F250 pickup on McKay Street in Radium Hot Springs. The truck had been stolen out of Canmore the previous evening. The truck was examined by a forensic identification officer, then returned to its owner.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Columbia Valley RCMP or Crimestoppers. • On Friday, November 22nd at approximately 2:30 a.m., a Ford U-Haul truck was stolen from the U-Haul storage yard in Windermere. The truck had Arizona license plate AH28088 attached. An officer conducted a scene examination, reviewed video surveillance footage and seized evidence for forensic examination. The investigation is ongoing. • On Friday, November 22nd at 11:15 a.m., an officer was conducting patrols on Athalmer Road in Invermere when he observed a Dodge Neon operating with license plates registered to a Honda Accord. The officer

conducted a traffic stop and discovered the driver also had an expired driver’s license. The driver was issued violation tickets for failing to produce insurance, no driver’s license and wrong number plate. The vehicle was impounded. • On Friday, November 22nd at 12:15 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver in Fairmont Hot Springs. A witness reported the driver of a Toyota Highlander had driven over a post and hit a picnic bench in a parking lot. An officer immediately responded and located a male matching the description walking away from a Toyota Highlander. Upon speaking to the driver the officer confirmed the male was intoxicated. The male was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and transported to cells where he was held until he was sober. The male was issued a 24-hour driving suspension and a violation ticket for being intoxicated in a public place.

Pooch park poop proves pesky

By Breanne Massey Special to the Pioneer The off-leash dog park near Toby Creek has been deemed a great asset by the Columbia Valley community for pet-owners and their furry friends alike.

But Mark Topliff, the District of Invermere’s (DOI) Bylaw Enforcement Officer and Dog Control representative, wants to remind pet owners to take responsibility for their animals at the park.

“The biggest complaint I’ve got in maybe two dozen calls since the park opened, (is) people let their dog off their leash and then it attacks another dog,” Mr. Topliff explained. “You’re responsible for your dog, even if it attacks another dog at the park.”

He patrols the dog park area twice per week and expects to continue rain, shine or snow. The other issue that has been identified during Mr. Topliff’s trips to patrol the dog park is dog owners not cleaning up after their animals at the public area.

“We’ve put receptacles down there and people are picking up after their dogs, tying a nice little bow and leaving the waste on the ground,” he said. “The dog park is a beautiful little area but people need to take it seriously. If you’re a dog owner, you have to look after your dog and be responsible.”

The DOI would like to remind dog owners that they are ultimately responsible for their pets, while they are on and off the leash.

Mr. Topliff said he is available for citizens who have questions between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Wednesday to Sunday all year.

“It’s easy to give us a call and find out the answers to your questions, if you’re thinking about and wondering about something,” he said. “If I don’t have the answer, I will find the answer for you.”

Recycle redress

Historical Lens

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The expanded recycling program at the Windermere landfill is a marvel to behold. Theoretically, it should reduce household garbage by a staggering amount. Just look at the amount of items the Regional District of East Kootenay program takes in: foam meat trays, egg cartons, grocery bags, bread bags, garden soil bags, zippered pouches, frozen food bags, cheese slice wrappers, clear and coloured glass containers, aluminum cans, milk jugs, plastic jars, newspapers, pizza boxes, even plastic takeway clamshells. The list includes more than 70 categories of recyclables.

It is an ambitious program, and one that is certainly anticipated to go a long ways in waste reduction.

The problem is the practicality of it. Maybe you are one of the green giants of the Valley that has managed to figure out a way to sort through every piece of packaging and squirrel it away for a trip to the landfill: green star stickers for all of you who have a system in place to deal with the extra recyclables.

Or perhaps you are more like me. I love the idea of recycling all of this. If it is a curbside recycling item, like newspapers and office paper, it easily goes into my usual in-town pickup. But the reality is, often, the ‘can I recycle this’ pile overflows in my basement’s laundry room higher than I would like, waiting for a trip to the landfill.

It lingers like a recycle wasteland running rampant. And the bigger it gets, the more I just don’t want to deal with it. The first time I finally took a load to the landfill to sort and recycle the newly accepted products, it filled the back of my SUV and took 45 minutes to sort at the site.

I spent an agonizing amount of time trying to figure out what went into which bin as my recyclables spilled out the back of my vehicle.

There has to be a better way to separate, store, and send off all this material. I know one surefire way is to bring less into my home in the first place. I could shop in bulk, make more homemade foods, and think carefully before each item I put into my grocery cart to analyze whether it is recyclable material and whether I will want to add it to my laundry room’s ‘trash’ mountain. But busy family life, at least for me, dictates oftentimes quicker food choices, which means pre-packaged products like granola bars for school lunches instead of making my own from scratch.

I am sure I am not the only one struggling with this.

Wanting to do the right thing, and actually doing the right thing, are not always lined up neatly. But hey, we’re all in this together. If you have a recycling system for storage, sorting, and ultimate delivery to the landfill in the bag, share your tips with us. Figuring out how to do this will not only be good for the environment, it will also be good for my own personal sanity every time I try to do a load of laundry.

Message is to respect veterans Dear Editor: I would like to counter some of the narratives presented in the editorial of November 21st “Free speech, but not freedom from consequence.”

Don Cherry’s comments were not “anti immigrant.” What he said was the least immigrants could do was educate themselves on the meaning of Remembrance Day, buy and wear a poppy. His comments were not limited to immigrants however, he was speaking to all Canadians. The message was for all of us to be cognizant of all the young men and women, over the history of this country, who were asked to serve and did. Remembrance Day is not a celebration of war, it is one day to realize the horrors these young people faced, many giving their lives.

If I was an immigrant to another country, I would not be offended in the least being told to get to know the history of my new chosen home.

If the history of that country was so antithetical to

my beliefs, I would have to ask myself why I was there. I would also not be offended if told I should be grateful for the new home I was given, and the sacrifices of the people who built that home, but I was raised properly.

The linking of Cherry and Trump was a cheap and thoughtless tactic to further disparage Don Cherry. It is typical of what I have come to expect from “progressives.” Also typical of the outrage mob, even while visibly and completely agreeing with Cherry, Ron Maclean gets a pass because he bowed, apologized and threw Don under the woke bus. (He really wanted that honorary law degree.)

Finally, I do agree that words matter. So let’s listen to people, and take what is said at face value.

We cannot let our own biases read different messages into what was said, as you have chosen to do.

Consquences for some

Dear Editor: I read, with interest the Black Press take on Don Cherry, what he said and the consequences (editorial Nov. 21st).

We could debate for hours on whether his rant specified immigrants or not, after all, Don saying “you people” in the rant is hardly a one-time use of the phrase. Anyone that doesn’t agree with Don or live up to his perceived level of hockey knowledge or patriotism is and always has been labeled as “you people.” Be that as it may, he was caught up in the reaction to his comments and paid the price. Please note that, aside from one comment about his long-time partner Ron MacLean, he has not bad-mouthed any of the other actors in his demise. In other words, he said his piece, and took the medicine.

Now contrast that with the despicable attack on “white boys” by CTV’s Jessica Allen. After stating she doesn’t “worship at the altar of hockey” she takes one experience she had with some college hockey players and labels all hockey players as bullies. She also disparages their parents for spending all that money on their kids

pursuing a game, rather than taking them to travel and see things (and presumably educating them to be as smart and worldly as she is). There was a great deal of pushback to her comments from Canadians across this land. Allen, specifically targeting “white boys,” issued a weak apology and carries on.

Seems to me that in our present day Canada, there can be consequences for saying the wrong thing, but only if it’s directed (or perceived to be directed) at certain segments of society. People and traditions descended from the two founding nations that together formed Canada are wide open to attack without consequence.

I appreciate that Black Press felt the need to comment on this issue, however, I was disappointed to notice that no one at Black Press felt brave enough to put their name to this. You’ll notice below that I have signed my name along with where I live. Guess I’ll have to live with the consequences.

The Radium Hot Springs Public Library is excited to announce that we now have a robust legal collection thanks to the LawMatters 2019 grants to libraries program. The LawMatters program at Courthouse Libraries BC, made possible with the funding from the Law Foundation of BC, works directly with public libraries in British Columbia to provide collection support and guidance for librarians. Each year LawMatters administers collection grants to participating libraries for the purchase of print legal materials. They work to help individual libraries build and maintain their legal collections. This year, the annual grants were increased substantially, owing to additional funding from the Law Foundation of BC to enhance the program. In addition to collection support, libraries in our area also received additional training and educational tools so that we are better able to serve our communities’ legal information needs with the goal of improving access to justice.

The Radium Public Library is now equipped with a great selection of up-todate legal books and resources relevant to our area. Legal collection subjects at our library include: Taxes and Finance, Wills, Estates and Personal Planning, Civil Law,

Employment and Labour Law, Aboriginal Law, Cannabis Law, Pensions, Benefits and Welfare, Family Law, Government and Legislation and many more! We also have information pamphlets and legal handouts available for patrons to take home.

In addition to our recent in-print collection, we also have a plethora of legal resources available on our website. International training grounds at Panorama

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Before the official First Run at Panorama Mountain Resort, before the public queues for day tickets, ski rentals and French fries in the cafeteria, Panorama has more of a cozy college campus vibe than the usual bustle of a busy ski resort. Small groups of friends sprawl in the main dining room in matching uniforms swapping stories. Plates teem high with hot buffet meals, or brown bag lunches sit opened.

Outside, lineups are nonexistent and skiers do lap after amazing lap with the mountain practically to themselves.

This is pre-season at Panorama, a global village of athletes all preparing for the upcoming race season.

From young skiers hitting the racing realm for the first time to Olympic athletes carved into model skiers after years of racing on the world stage, more than 50

Last weekend alone, more than 600 athletes descended on the mountain, for training and also a FIS Men’s Super G race held on Friday,

November 22nd.

Some teams have been coming to train at Panorama for years. Camille Dion, Panorama’s racing events and competitions coordinator, figures about 90 per cent of the teams at Panorama this year are

returning teams. But there are some new ones too, such as the Slovenian national ski team, which came with six athletes and nine staff. Head coach Grega Koštomaj said after training a couple years at nearby Nakiska, they decided to try and move to some other slopes prior to the FIS Lake Louise World Cup race.

“We heard some good rumours that here is also pretty good – good terrain,” Mr. Koštomaj said. “Now actually, it’s our first day . . . we are pretty happy with that decision.”

As a team focused on speed, Mr. Koštomaj said, “We are looking for wide and longer courses, which we can get here.”

The national Russian team also brought their high-speed athletes to Panorama for pre-season training. They just got off their first morning of skiing at Panorama when interviewed by the Pioneer.

Para-alpine training at Panorama

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Canada’s national para-alpine team calls Panorama Mountain Resort their home base, spending much of their training time each season on the local slope. Will Marshall, a coach with the Canadian national para-alpine team, says it works well for several reasons to have the para-alpine athletes call Panorama their home base for training.

Mr. Marshall, who grew up skiing Panorama, says the mountain’s varied terrain and amazing snow conditions make it ideal for training. But on top of that, for para-alpine skiers, there are other benefits of training locally too, such as having hotels right at the base of the lift for easy access.

“Things like that are big for us - accessibility to the mountain without having to drive, the actual lifts for keeping their legs fresh, and, also, they’ve just been coming here for a long time. It’s a good base in Canada,” said Mr. Marshall. “The team feels pretty comfortable here.”

This year’s team is looking strong, Mr. Marshall said, with a few coming back from injuries and some racers ready to go on the race circuit this year, including Kurt Oatway and Alexis Gumond. Mr. Marshall will be working a lot this year with Mac Marcoux, who is returning from a back injury this season.

“He’s one of our stars of the team,” Mr. Marshall remarked of Mr. Marcoux.

Mr. Marcoux is not just a star of the para-alpine team but is one of Canada’s top athletes, racing to gold in the Paralympic Winter Games in Korea in 2018 for downhill racing as well as bronze for giant slalom. In 2014, he got gold for giant slalom and bronze for Super G and Downhill at the Sochi Olympics. He has earned two firsts in 2019 at the World Cup Finals, for Super G and Downhill, as well as being awarded the IPC Crystal Globe Champion in 2018 for overall, downhill, and Super-G categories.

Mr. Marcoux skis in the visually impaired category. When he started to lose his vision as a kid, he researched sports he would still be able to excel at as a visually-impaired athlete.

“When my vision started going south, I looked into sports and para-athletes (and) I stumbled across skiing. I kind of jumped in right then and there,” said Mr. Marcoux.

He came to the IPC World Cup scene in 2013 at only 15-years-old after catching the eye of the para-alpine team at a national race in Kimberley. . . . ‘International’ from 8 “It’s nice weather, nice slope, and nice people,” said the Russian team’s assistant coach Aleksandra Kupreichik.

Ms. Kupreichik said the long slopes at Panorama and the history of fast athletes coming from this area made it a good fit for the Russian team to try out this year. They were enjoying the camaraderie found at the resort so far and said they would certainly consider coming back again next year.

“A lot of additional teams come here, and we can [do] training together,” she commented.

Other teams have made Panorama an annual pilgrimage, such as the Southern Ontario Division (SOD) Ski Team, a FIS alpine program that gathers the best young athletes in the region.

“It’s good to come to Panorama and train the hills we’re going to be racing on,” says 16-year-old racer Kate Sellery, who is in her first year on the SOD FIS team. “It’s nice to get a feel of the terrain and what the snow is like, which is really good to get a step ahead of some of the others we’re racing against.”

SOD women’s coach Jenn Warren said 21 athletes from the SOD team are currently training at Panorama.

“It’s a different level of skiing for these guys, so they’re exposed to a lot more – different hills, different terrain, different kids at this level,” Ms. Warren said. “To be able to come here in November is amazing: the snowmaking, the way they prepare the training hill – it’s just so, so good. You can’t really beat it.”

The younger athletes who train at Panorama not only get the benefit of Panorama’s tracks, but they practice, eat, and live right in the same village as world-class athletes.

“For the first year FIS athletes to be training next to their idols, like national teams, is pretty amazing,” said Ms. Warren. “It’s good for our kids to watch these guys train:

Photos by Jade Wetherell of Alpine Canada “In the 2012/13 season I started racing the World Cup and it’s been kind of snowballing since then,” Mr. Marcoux said.

Mr. Marcoux is on the mend from injuries, working to get back on the snow alongside a new ski guide, Tristan Rogers. He told the Pioneer he loves Panorama, finding there are so many varied options for training on this mountain.

“It’s pretty awesome to have this right at our fingertips,” said Mr. Marcoux. “It just feels like home.” the way they focus, and the pace of their training sessions – it’s a good learning experience for all our athletes.”

Clarissa Amaro, media marketing and customer relations at Panorama Mountain Resort, has seen that overlap’s positive outcome too.

“For a lot of younger athletes I think that’s the key. They see the professionalism of these athletes they look up to. They get to race on tracks that are the same . . . They get to see these races that happen here, which are very high caliber. They’re taking away a lot about the process of becoming professional,” Ms. Amaro said.

Ms. Amaro explained that Panorama staff have been working hard, especially over the last few years, to make the resort a top training facility. From specialized requirements for international teams to offering a safe environment for the youngest skiers, Panorama has opened the doors to pre-season training of all types and stripes. Ms. Dion, who just took on the role of racing events and competitions coordinator for Panorama this year, invited an estimated 300 teams to come train here this year. Other international teams making Panorama a training destination this season include Swiss, French, Chilean, and Romanian, as well as national or more localized teams from the USA, Quebec, Ontario, and B.C., to name a few.

“You’ll see kids as young as 8 .. . . come with their families and their entourage.

Then right now, we’ve got some of the top athletes in the world here,” said Ms. Amaro.

“It shows the diversity of terrain that we have, and our ability to cater to all these different types of skiers, whether they’re little Nancy Greene level, all the way up to World Cup racers.”

Outside the Ski Tip Lodge after the Pioneer’s interviews, a cluster of young teammates head to the racks to put on their skis. Over at the lift bottom, a couple racers from the French national team take a breather, while a Russian team member glides past for another ride to the top. And over it all, a perfect bluebird sky paints the backdrop for students and teachers at campus Panorama, class of 2019/20.

Where to recycle?

Sometime after her father died, Maria Kliavkoff and her mother Susan were out shopping when they came across “this big, beautiful bin of green beans.”

The beans sparked Susan’s memory, and she told Maria how, back when they were newlyweds, her late husband had taught her to cook the beans the way his family enjoyed them.

“That afternoon we cooked my father’s green beans, telling stories,” Maria said. “It was such a beautiful opportunity of healing for both of us.”

Sharing stories, reenacting precious memories of green beans simmering on the stovetop and letting tears fall as they may are a few ways to allow grief to come out and turn into mourning, Maria said.

“The whole process of grief is asking us to sit with our thoughts, sit with our feelings, allow them expression, allow the tears, allow the laughter, allow the stories,” she said. “As we allow ourselves to stay present to the grief journey and what the grief journey is asking for us at this moment, so can we express it and mourn it and move on. It really is the easiest way through it.”

After losing both of her parents and mourning her losses, Maria is launching a book to share what she learned along the way and through her experiences as the founder and former executive director for the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley.

“I wrote this book as an homage to my mother,” she said. “This book is about honouring the past and celebrating those connections so that you can move forward and live your life joyfully.”

There’s no right way to mourn a loss, she said, adding that her book offers suggestions for readers to take or leave or customize as they please.

“What a griever needs is someone who reminds them to listen to their own inner voice and to listen to their stories,” she said. “It’s okay to be as public with their grief as they were with their love for that person.”

Those who have experienced a profound loss may try to fight against their grief, but she said that strategy doesn’t work. Feelings, after all, just want to be felt.

“Our life becomes really dimmed down. Our life spark diminishes,” she said. “Life becomes really bleak (if we try to bury our grief ) . . . The story and the love gets buried in the sadness and the loss.”

While navigating grief is a monumental task, she said mourning is crucial for allowing the bereaved to move forward.

Healthy mourning is about “reconciling with the loss of the physical person and the reclaiming of the relationship – that love piece – that never goes away,” she said. “That’s a relationship that has survived the death.”

Maria will launch her book in Invermere on Friday, November 29th at 5 p.m. at Pynelogs Art Gallery and Cultural Central and in Radium on Saturday, December 7th at 2 p.m. at the Radium Hot Springs Centre.

This is because money represents different things to different people. Some feel gratification from saving or investing; others prefer to spend.

Differing perspectives about money are what help drive a healthy economy. However, these dissimilarities can cause friction or a lack of understanding in a marriage or common-law relationship. Here are a few things to keep in mind while having the “money talk” with your partner.

Be proactive It goes without saying that the best time for couples to talk about money is before any concerns arise. Overspending or being too frugal are the two most common money issues between couples.

Often, a person’s behaviour towards money directly relates to their personal experiences with it. For example, someone who grew up in a family with very little money might be thriftier than someone whose family were more economically comfortable. Of course, the opposite may be true. Feelings about money are as diverse as people themselves.

One way to be proactive is to set a family budget. Try tracking your family’s monthly spending over a couple of months, then budget for the average. Be sure to include amounts for emergency and long-term savings. This will help paint a clear picture of your family’s spending habits, needs and wants.

Established couples are often aware of one another’s feelings towards money and may have devised a system to account for things. Newer couples considering marriage or a common-law arrangement would benefit from writing a budget and setting out guidelines at the start.

Designate jobs It’s likely that in a relationship, one person is more

interested in managing the family finances such as balancing the budget and paying the bills. If this is the case it makes sense to delegate those duties to one person, especially in the case of bill paying, to ensure it gets done and isn’t accidentally done twice. The other partner should still be involved in the process to ensure they understand the family finances.

Other financial jobs to be delegated include managing savings and investment accounts, as well as grocery and other family shopping.

Coping with differences Often, people find that problems can arise when one partner consistently spends more money than the other.

One way to mitigate this is to keep a joint bank account as well as separate bank accounts. Each partner seeds the joint account with a certain dollar amount or percentage of their paycheck. This joint account should cover all household expenses, as well as emergency savings, vacations and long-term savings.

The couple’s personal accounts house the money they have left after all of their mandatory savings and expenses have been accounted for. This money should be thought of as personal spending accounts.

If one partner chooses to save their money and the other chooses to spend it, that’s up to them. Many couples find this idea works because everyone needs discretionary spending money, and as long as the household expenses and savings are taken care of there isn’t much else to worry about.

If the problem is more serious, for example, one partner is running up a lot of credit card debt, it could be a sign of other problems. If this behaviour is chronic, and not something a couple can work out themselves, there are resources such as marriage or credit counsellors who can help.

Final thoughts Conversations about money should be handled sensitively and with understanding.

Both partners should be willing to give and take a little in order to reach common ground and ensure a happy, healthy financial future.

Local frost seeding workshop Submitted by Kootenay and Boundary Farm Advisors Frost seeding is a method to improve pasture and hay fields by broadcasting seed on frozen ground or snow. As the ground freezes and thaws, it opens and closes the ground, which allows the seed to be incorporated into the soil. Frost seeding has been trialed in Northern British Columbia and elsewhere in the world with promising results for pasture rejuvenation – but new trials will assess the practice in the context of the Columbia Valley.

On Tuesday, December 3rd, Julie Robinson (Peace River Forage Association of BC) and Bill Wilson (Forage Friendly Enterprises Ltd) will be in Radium Hot Springs to discuss best practices for success and demonstrate how to frost seed.

The event will be a great opportunity for ranchers to get some hands-on experience, think about seeding rates and see the trial being seeded. Julie has worked with forages (with PRFA of BC and Ministry of Agriculture) for over 20 years and Bill for 30 years (managing a ranch and working with PRFA of BC).

“This event is an excellent opportunity for our local ranching community to learn from experienced folks,” says Rachael Roussin of the Kootenay and Boundary Farm Advisors. “Julie and Bill both bring a wealth of experience and advice on pasture and forage crop management and we hope to glean as much as we can in the upcoming workshop. We have been trying to

get Julie into the Kootenays for a couple of years, so we are thrilled that they are making the long trip!”

The Frost Seeding Workshop is part of a national initiative on evaluating best management practices and soil carbon sequestration by the Canadian Grassland and Forage Association, with the B.C. trials coordinated by the BC Forage Council.

“There is significant potential for perennial forages to contribute to mitigating climate change through soil carbon sequestration – and we need to start measuring how different practices are related to soil carbon. We are excited to be partnering with BC ranchers on this work, and contribute to the national work being done by the Canadian Forage and Grassland Association,” said Serena Black, BCFC Manager.

Local coordination efforts by the Windermere and District Farmers’ Institute and the Kootenay and Boundary Farm Advisors make this event a true collaborative Agri-event that can’t be missed! The Kootenay projects are funded in part by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Government of British Columbia through programs delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of B.C..

The workshop runs Tuesday, December 3rd from 1-4 p.m. at Upper Ranch, 6755 Highway 95, Radium Hot Spring (3 km north of the four-way stop in Radium).

On November 14, 2019, Lawrence “Fern” Champagne passed away peacefully in Kelowna, B.C. with his wife of 58 years and daughter by his side. Fern was predeceased by his father, Frank; mother Elsie; and sister, Alvina. He leaves behind his loving wife Margaret; daughter Crystal (Randy); sons Tom (Jacquie), Gary, Bill, and Lawrence & Perry Greenwood; grandchildren Jordan (Rebecca), Kendahl, Amber, Justin, Ryan and Hope; and great grandchildren Aradia and Jesse. Fern will also be missed by his sister Dorothy; brothers, Earl (Doreen), Raymond (Bernice), Dennis (Irene), Alan (Sheila), and Garry; along with many nieces and nephews.

Fern was a hard-working truck driver for over 37 years, who was an avid golfer, a great dancer and enjoyed watching TV. He will always be remembered for his devilish grin and flirting with the ladies, although he only had eyes for his wife. He had a great sense of humour, and liked to act tough but was always loving, thoughtful and his family meant everything to him. Fern will be always loved, forever missed, and never forgotten by his family and all the people whose life he touched.

The family will not be having a celebration of life until late spring.

White, Terrance 1933 – 2019

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Terry White in Cranbrook, B.C. on Wednesday, November 20th. Terry passed away peacefully with his family by his side after suffering a stroke. He had been living with kidney disease for the past few years.

He leaves behind his best friend and forever devoted wife Shirley, their daughters Wendy, her son Colin Wright (Angela), Cindy, son Michael (Teresa) their family Ryan (Alicia), Kyle (Amanda) and Jolene (Don Van). Nine great grandchildren, Hayden, Gaven, Genevieve, Kate, Charlie, Isaac, Maggie, Logan and Alex.

Terry was born in Campbell River, B.C., 1933, raised on Vancouver Island, and came to the Vulcan, AB area in his late teens. He farmed, raised cattle, as well as running a photography business. Terry and Shirley retired to his beloved province of B.C. and made Fairmont Hot Springs their home for the past 20 years.

His love of life and adventure followed him all his days. He was a devoted husband and father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather. He enjoyed being a Scoutmaster, private pilot, scuba diver, skier, golfer and artist. His passion and energy touched so many. The courage and strength shown as he battled his health issues was an inspiration to all who knew him. His sense of humour never failed. He had excellent care with doctors and medical staff in Invermere, Cranbrook and Trail, for which he and his family are forever grateful.

A gathering will take place at the family home November 30th, 2-4 pm, 5121 Wilder Loop Road, Fairmont Hot Springs.

A graveside service is planned for the spring in Vulcan, AB. In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the charity of your choice.

S OBITUARY S Demers, Donna Lynn Donna Lynn Demers passed away on Tuesday, November 19th, 2019 after a short and intense battle with cancer. She moved from Montreal to Radium Hot Springs in April of 2014. She quickly became involved in the community, working at CasaVino, Bighorn then Motel Tyrol. She very much enjoyed her volunteering at the Radium Library and her “As The Page Turns” book club. Her Monday Pub night with Wendy and George was a huge highlight in her week.

Donna is survived by her daughters Ashley Fischer (Thomas) and Cassandra Fischer (Massimo) and her two grandsons Xavier and Alexi. She leaves behind her sister Dee Conklin and two brothers Derek (Kristine) and David Demers and many nieces and nephews.

Donna’s family and friends will miss her thoughtful and very caring attitude. Donna loved the sign, “the Mountains Shall Bring Peace to the People” and they truly did for her!

Rockies rumble Rockies goalie Bretton Park puts up a near-impenetrable wall Friday night against the Creston Valley Thundercats.

The Rockies kicked the Cats to the alley with a 5-1 win at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena.

Saturday, November 23rd, the Rockies faced the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in a game that left everyone wondering until the very end who would leave victorious. The Nitehawks scored 13 minutes into the first period, answered back a minute later by Rockies’ Khale Skinner, assisted by Colby Philips. But fans were left hanging through the second and third period and again through the first overtime. Finally the Nitehawks ended the anxiety in the second overtime with the winning goal of the night. The 5th annual Ladies’ Night at Home Hardware included a fashion show sponsored by Avenue, live music by Smarty Pants, crafts, door-crasher deals, and a record-breaking 364 ladies milling throughout the store.

On Saturday, November 23rd, the Bantam team played at home against Fernie in a league game and won 7-3. Carson Jefferson scored first, assisted by Braxton Gulliford and Leif Dubreuil.

Adam Kubian scored next, assisted by Leif Dubreuil.

Cameron Howse then scored, assisted by Teagan Pike.

The next two goals were scored by Brayden Mastroianni, assisted by Braxton Gulliford and Lukas Pfisterer. A power play goal was scored by Teagan Pike, assisted by Braxton and Connor Brooks. Braxton then scored on a power play to end the scoring. On Sunday, the boys played Kimberley in an exhibition game and won 9-5.

Goals were scored by Cameron, Brayden (2), Carson (2), Connor Von Niessen (2), and Tobias Andruschuk. Lucian Kinsey, Lukas, Connor, Leif, and Troy Gatsby were all credited with assists. It was a good weekend for a hard working team. The Midget hockey team played Cranbrook and lost 12-2.

The Peewee A team travelled to Revelstoke last weekend for a tournament. Their first game was an 8-5 loss to the eventual champion Nelson. The next two games were wins against Kamloops and Revelstoke but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to make the finals. They had to settle for the bronze metal game against Revelstoke. It was a close game from start to finish but the Rockies held on for the 3-2 victory. The game’s MVP’s for the weekend were Jesse McIntosh, Caden Williams, Kaydn Chasse and Brayden Roe. The Peewee B team traveled to Whitefish, Montana for the Border Tournament. The games were close, with the team losing to Coeur d’Alene 2-1, beating Kalispell 2-1, losing to Shaunovan 5-1 (with Cohen Lawrick stopping 67 shots to keep the game close) and beating Elk Valley 3-2 on Sunday to finish 3rd. Makenna O’ Connor, Bryce Nicholas-Hall and Chase Kinsey scoring in an exciting 3rd period. Thomas Meena scored in game 1 and in the Kalispell win, Miles Altman scored the winning goal, and Hunter Wood scored the lone goal in Game 3.

The Senior girls started off their League play with 2 home games against Warburg. While they fell short on both games, they saw great weekend performances by Sarah Van Hoek, Sahara Eccles and Dana Angebrandt.

They had their share of time to practice the penalty kill this weekend as well, and strong pressure and defensive grit was displayed by Hannah Goldsmith, Kayla Gallagher and Rachel Angebrandt. Overall a good effort this weekend.

Why God became human

By Fr. Jojo Augustin St. Joseph’s Catholic Church “God became man so that man might become a god,”St. Athanasius.

Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, in one of his short stories, wrote about a severe ruler, who asked his wise men to show him God so that he could know what God was like. The wise men did not know how to satisfy the king’s desire. So, a shepherd, who was just returning from the fields, offered to take upon himself the task of the wise men.

The shepherd told the king that he would not be able to see God with his human eyes. Instead he could only see how God acts. In order to do this, they must ex-

change clothing – the shepherd would put on the costly garments of the king and the king would in turn put on the dirty and torn clothing of the shepherd. Hesitantly, but urged by curiosity, the king consented, giving his regal clothing to the shepherd and dressing himself in the simple clothing of the poor man.

At this the shepherd told the king: “This is what God does!”

God, in his goodness, has performed a ‘sacred exchange’ with humans. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, left his divine splendour and became a human person. He emptied himself and took the form of a servant. He did this in order to redeem humans, to regain them to their divine status. He took on what was ours, so that we could receive what is his, becoming similar to God. Christ wore our clothing: pain, joy, hunger, thirst, weakness, fear, anguish and sorrow of being human.

I wish you all a meaningful Christmas preparation.

Let’s get ready to celebrate the joy of God becoming human by living his message.

Lawrie Mack of the Columbia Valley Food Bank posed with the Sobeys Invermere team to promote a hamper fundraiser that Sobeys will be running until Christmas.

Hampers are available for $5 or $10. Charitable customers were so enthusiastic about the hampers that Sobeys sold out of them and ordered more in. Mr. Mack said the hampers are very much appreciated.

For many of our loyal guests at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, the Holiday Lights and Winter Nights Festival is a family tradition. And at the heart of every family tradition is a meaningful experience.

The holidays are a time to create memories and we wanted to make this year’s experience even more magical, more meaningful, and more memorable for our guests.

Our fabulous grounds team once again spent hundreds of hours to bring the magic of Christmas to life with a spectacular lights display that we will officially light up on Friday, November 29th. At the light up ceremony we will also honour George Gray, who for 29 years shared his love of Christmas lights with us and the community.

We added more free activities for kids of all ages throughout the whole holiday season, such as photos with Santa in Santa’s cabin, Letter to Santa workshops, scavenger hunts, crafts, cookie decorating, Christmas ball painting, and our traditional elf hunts at the ski hill. And, for our adult guests, we added some free yoga sessions and guided nature hikes.

Also new this year is the unveiling of our man-made gingerbread house in our lobby and an ice carving demonstration on Saturday, November 30th.

We can’t forget our best friends that love us unconditionally: our pets! New this year are pet photos with Santa on Saturday, November 30th, with donations going to ICAN. The holidays are about family and friendship, creating memories and breaking bread together. With our new Food and Beverage Leadership Team – with Adrian Beers as Food and Beverage Di-

rector and K. Bonsu as our new executive chef – we are able to add very special food and beverage experiences throughout the season.

We will start our special holiday food and beverage experiences by celebrating our Canadian / American friendship with a traditional American Thanksgiving dinner buffet on the same night as we will have our official light up ceremony: on Friday, November 29th.

We will also offer a Christmas Eve dinner buffet on December 24th, a Christmas Day three-course dinner on December 25th and, to ring in the New Year, a New Year’s Eve family celebration with a dinner buffet, live music and a fireworks display. For those who want a more casual night, we will have a DJ in Bear’s Paw.
