The fourth annual Cram the Cruiser Toy Drive returns to Invermere this weekend. All are invited to the Canadian Tire-based fundraiser between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. this Saturday, November 23rd.

“All of the toys we collect are distributed by the Christmas Bureau to benefit kids in our area that couldn’t normally have something under the tree on Christmas morning,” said Jeff and Jamie Cote, event organizers and spokespeople for Cram the Cruiser Toy Drive.

“It’s something that (my wife) Jamie and I are really passionate about. We started doing it in the last store we were in too.”

The day-long event features an RCMP cruiser parked outside of the Canadian Tire storefront with the lights on and volunteers standing nearby to give out information cards.

The Columbia Valley RCMP help the Cote family and the Christmas Bureau to collect children’s toys for all ages to donate to needy children within the community.

“Cram the Cruiser attracts attention from the community because it’s neat to see, and it’s great to see the RCMP working with the community. They’re helping us on a good cause,” said Mr. Cote.

For the first time ever, this year’s event will be offering a 10 per cent discount on products at the store so that

shoppers who wish to buy a toy at the location on the same day have an incentive to help out.

“We’re going to be handing out discount coupons to shoppers at the store parking lot along with information about the cause,” Mr. Cote said about the one-day fundraiser.

However, those who wish to bring in new, unwrapped toys to donate are invited to participate in the fundraiser as well.

There are no specific ages being targeted, Mr. Cote added. Gifts are at the discretion of the customer.

In addition, cash donations will be accepted during the fundraiser, which allows the Christmas Bureau to purchase toys too.

The 2018 fundraiser was very successful, acquiring a total of 500 toys to be donated to children within the Columbia Valley.

“I believe we crammed the cruiser six times last year,” Mr. Cote recalled.

For those families in need over the holidays, please contact the Christmas Bureau directly to sign up for the toy drive program. After a family has been signed up for the toy drive, the Christmas Bureau of the Columbia Valley disperses toys to the correct age groups and coordinates the program’s offerings within the community.

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Soon the front shelves at the Invermere Public Library will be filled with items you can check out and take home for keeps with no late fees, thanks to the Friends of the Invermere Public Library’s annual Christmas Silent Auction.

“It’s an opportunity to pick up unique Christmas gifts, and they’re all new or near-new donated items,” said Sheila Bonny, who is coordinating the auction.

Auction items include a juicer, framed paintings, bundles of books ranging from detective novels to children’s stories, a barometer, ornaments, golf passes, silver dishes, a raised feeding station for a large dog, a spa basket, a basket with children’s toys, a fitness basket and much more.

“One of the most interesting ones is one person has donated a Christmas-morning breakfast package. It will have in it some juice cartons, pancake mix, maple syrup and a brand-new electric griddle,” she said.

The auction will also include a crocheted baby quilt and a hand-knit baby cardigan.

“We have some generous handicrafters around the Valley,” she said.

Ms. Bonny is looking forward to placing a few bids herself.

“There’s a beautiful pottery bowl that I have in mind that I’d love to bid on,” she said.

“I think one good tip is to come in on the last day.

Sometimes there are people hovering around just before we close it up to make sure they get their last bid and their best bid in,” she said. “There’s usually some interesting competition that goes on as people come rushing in to make sure they get their last bid in before it closes.”

Last year’s auction raised close to $2,700 for the library.

Dragons’ Den victory for Taynton Bay Spirits

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Justin Atterbury was nervous as he and Steve Kuffler passed out samples of Taynton Bay Spirits’ ginger matcha vodka for a panel of six big-name and big-wallet investors on Dragons’ Den, a nationally-broadcast CBC show where entrepreneurs pitch their ideas with hope of securing a deal.

“The fact that nobody spit it out, that was the biggest fear, right? You were worried someone would make a face, and I think that was a turning point for me when they were filming. It was super stressful up until the time they took their first drink,” he said.

“You don’t really go unscathed when it goes sideways.”

His next thought after the dragons imbibed was: “It doesn’t matter what happens now because they all said it was good.”

But what happened in their nearly eight minutes of national airtime on Thursday, November 14th matters a great deal for the local company. In addition to seeking national exposure for Taynton Bay Spirits, the pair were also asking the dragons for $125,000 in exchange for a seven per cent share of their company.

Immediately Manjit Minhas, a dragon who co-owns the ninth-largest brewery in the world, expressed skepticism, noting that their valuation was close to $1.8 million.

She went on to offer $125,000 for 12 per cent of the company.

After some consideration, Arlene Dickinson made a higher offer than her fellow dragon and higher than Taynton Bay Spirits was seeking.

“I’m a marketer at the end of the day, and I have a fund that helps people take their consumer goods to market. It’s what I do. So I’ll give you $185,000 for 10 per cent,” she said. “They need capital and help.”

Mr. Atterbury and Mr. Kuffler accepted Ms. Dickinson’s offer on behalf of their team of five partners and have been in contact with their very own dragon a few times since the show was taped in May. While their segment ended in hugs and laughter, their deal wasn’t finalized until last week after a forensic audit. And Ms. Dickinson tossed in an extra $40,000 for entrepreneurship training and a marketing campaign, bringing her contribution up to

“When we left the show, we were on cloud nine,” Mr. Atterbury said, adding that he was shocked to walk away with more than he had wanted and such a wholehearted endorsement from the dragons.

Mr. Kuffler agreed, saying: “We killed it.”

With up to 4 million people watching the show, he said: “There’s no other marketing out there that could compare. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime.”

What’s next for Taynton Bay Spirits? Mr. Atterbury is keen on expanding through British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan and then getting into Ontario.

Mr. Kuffler has his sights set even higher. After slaying the dragons, he’s ready for world domination and maybe a friendly local competition.

“We’ll see if we can catch Kicking Horse,” he said with a laugh.

Canal Flats updates dated Kootenay River flood risk data

The Village of Canal Flats passed the first two readings of an amendment to the Official Community Plan at the last Council meeting Tuesday, November 12th.

Aside from some wording changes and clarifying points, as well as a floodplain map, the amended bylaw states that the Village recognizes “that most of Canal Flats, including the area within the urban Containment Boundary, is located on an alluvial fan.”

Why does this matter? Alluvial fans are landforms filled with gravel, sand and smaller sediment like silt, created as water comes down from higher features like mountains or hills. The rushing water carries deposits to a flat plain. Alluvial fans are created when this sediment is deposited as the stream fans out on the flat ground. The B.C. government’s floodplain maps for the region note that on the Canal Flats’ alluvial fan (which was created in pre-history) “flooding depth(is) in-

determinate in this area. In addition to possible inundation by over-bank flows, the entire fan area is subject to special flood hazard due to possible channel avulsion.”

Avulsion basically means that a river can break out of its channel for a variety of reasons, such as extreme runoff events. If that were to happen, there is a possibility Canal Flats could see some flooding. However, Adrian Bergles, Canal Flats’ CAO, said the risk of flooding is actually “quite low.”

To find out just what kind of risks there might be, the Village of Canal Flats is doing a study of flood risks for the Kootenay River to update almost 30-year-old information, thanks to a $150,000 grant from Emergency Management BC announced in May 2019.

“Being prepared is about understanding hazards and finding ways to better protect the public,” said Jennifer Rice, Parliamentary Secretary for Emergency Preparedness. “This funding will help local governments assess the risks that are unique to their communities and take steps to prevent and prepare for disasters.”

RCMP Report Submitted by Sgt. Darren Kakuno Detachment Commander Columbia Valley RCMP This past week, November 11th through November 17th, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 42 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to: • On Tuesday, November 12th at about 8 p.m., the driver of a Mazda 6 was southbound on Highway 93/95 near Invermere when the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a telephone pole. There were no reported injuries. • On Thursday, November 14th at 6:30 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a single vehicle collision on Highway 93 near Settlers Road in Kootenay National Park. Officers discovered a Dodge Ram pickup had left the roadway and struck a tree. The driver was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. • On Thursday, November 14th at about 8:50 p.m., an officer was conducting patrols near Invermere when he noticed a Ford Tempo travelling on Highway 93/95 with an inactive license plate. The officer conducted a traffic stop and determined the driver was prohibited from driving. The driver was also breaching his conditions by being in a motor vehicle without the registered owner. The driver was arrested and released on a Promise to Appear in court at a later date. He was also served violation tickets for having no insurance, the wrong number plate and no driver’s license. • On Thursday, November 14th at about 11:45 p.m.,

police were advised an intoxicated male had left the hospital and staff feared for his safety due to his level of intoxication. Police located the male and arrested him for being intoxicated in a public place. The male was held in cells until he was sober in order to ensure his safety. • On Saturday, November 16th at about 1:30 a.m., a resident on Victoria Avenue in Windermere reported someone had entered their house and fled the area after being confronted by the homeowner. The person was described as being a Caucasian male, approximately 25-years-old, 6 feet tall with a thin build. • On Saturday, November 16th at about 1:30 a.m., police were responding to a report of a break and enter in Windermere when an officer noticed a male riding on the shoulder of Highway 93/95 in Windermere without a helmet. The officer stopped and spoke to the individual and discovered he was breaching his conditions by being away from his residence during his court-ordered curfew.

The 26-year-old male was arrested for breaching his conditions and released by a Judicial Justice of the Peace to attend court at a later date. The investigation is ongoing to determine whether this male was involved in the break and enter at the residence on Victoria Avenue. • On Saturday, November 16th, police received a report of a break and enter at a residence on Poplar Street in Windermere. The entry point was determined to be an unlocked door. Liquor, medications and cigarettes were stolen from the residence. Police seized items from the scene for forensic examination. Police are reminding residents to ensure they lock their houses and vehicles.

A better way to solve problems

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Three years after Lance* disappeared into the throws of a cocaine addiction and a year and a half since he dug his way out, the Columbia Valley Narcotics Anonymous group he started early in his recovery is expanding to offer two weekly meetings.

Narcotics Anonymous will now offer meetings on Saturday mornings in addition to Thursday eve-

nings. Lance will continue running the Thursday meetings, while another freshly-recovering member will host the Saturday ones.

While people have been coming out for the meetings from across the Valley and beyond, Lance said attendance has been low and that he’d like to see more people getting help. “The program works. Come on out and check it out. It doesn’t hurt to try, right?� he said.

Radium rentals and marketing

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Radium council received a general consensus on plans to require licenses for short-term rentals when more than 30 residents and secondary homeowners attended an open house on the issue on Saturday, November 16th.

Attendees weren’t thrilled with calling the proposed $100-a-year permission slips ‘business licenses,’ but Mark Read, the Village’s chief administrative officer, said that’s the only name the provincial government will allow them to use.

Participants also raised concerns with a proposed requirement to have owners post their contact information at the entrance to their properties as they felt it could aid thieves in targeting vacant homes.

In response, Mayor Clara Reinhardt said council would re-evaluate how to ensure that those with questions about a rental would be able to reach the owners.

Council’s proposed plan was also to require a local contact person or property manager to be available 24/7 to answer calls and deal with issues that arise. Some residents said they felt having a local contact person was necessary for situations like when guests get locked out or have the wrong unit number.

In contrast, a secondary homeowner from Calgary said it would be ‘impractical’ to hire a property manager and that he could deal with any issues remotely.

“What we want is someone who will answer the phone and say, ‘I hear you and I’m on it’,”

said Mayor Reinhardt. She later said council will have a further discussion on whether to require owners to have a local contact.

While one secondary homeowner who makes his place available for short-term rentals felt like the license fee was “a tax grab” from the “rich little town,” another homeowner in the same situation said he felt $100 a year was reasonable.

“You rent your room for one night and you’ve already made a profit,” Mr. Read said about the fee for the license, which is intended to cover administrative costs around managing the short-term rentals.

Council is accepting written submissions on the issue, which will come back to council chambers sometime within the next few months.

Councillor Dale Shudra said, “we’re trying to touch it as lightly as we can and yet regulate it.”

Money for marketing Tourism Radium’s marketing coffers will be piled up with the Village’s share of funding collected from short-term rentals. Council had two options for the provincially-regulated funding: invest it in tourism efforts or direct it to a shovel-ready housing project. Without a housing project in the works, Mayor Reinhardt said council didn’t have much choice besides handing the funding over to Tourism Radium.

She said the 2019 total is modestly estimated at around $40,000. Tourism Radium will receive the short-term rental revenue for 2019 and 2020.

The Columbia Valley Pioneer • 5 . . . ‘Canal’ from 3 The last major floodplain mapping program for the Kootenay River at Canal Flats and Columbia Lake was released in October 1990. That report states: “The Kootenay River can experience quick changes in river discharge.”

Luckily, the Kootenay River does not appear to have ever flooded into Canal Flats. The 1990 report included interview results from several longtime Canal Flats residents. George Cockshott, who had lived in Canal Flats since 1931, said he was unaware of the Kootenay River ever inundating Canal Flats.

There had, however, been flooding recorded both upstream and downstream of the community.

In May 1986, there was record flow on the Kootenay River, with two nearby ranches reporting extensive flooding.

The report goes on to say: “The extent of the floodplain is defined by the valley slopes upstream and downstream of Canal Flats. At Canal Flats, however, the alluvial fan, being of deposited material, is not a permanent boundary of the river. The fan slopes from the river bank to Columbia Lake with

an elevation difference of up to 10 m. At high stages, the Kootenay River could overtop the river bank and flow over land to the lake, or the Kootenay River could switch channels by eroding through the fan at the sharp river bend upstream of the bridge. Although there is no record of over-land flow from the river to the lake, an extreme event such as the 200-year flood could cause over-land flow or a major avulsion.”

The Village of Canal Flats is hosting an open house on Monday, November 25th to share more details about the Kootenay River flood risk assessment study, which Urban Systems is aiming to have completed by spring 2020. Staff and contracted engineers will be on hand to discuss community flood risk, steps taken to protect the community, and answer any questions residents may have. The open house takes place from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the Canal Flats Village office.

The OCP bylaw amendment will go to a public hearing prior to third reading and adoption.

The public hearing is scheduled for Monday, December 9th at 6:30 p.m. at the Village office.

Free speech, but not freedom from consequence Black Press

Whether or not you think Don Cherry got a raw deal, one thing is clear from this whole incident: freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequence.

Cherry got the boot for making an anti-immigrant rant. Some are defending him, saying that he was only expressing his opinion that not enough people were wearing poppies to show their respect for veterans and the fallen — thus exercising freedom of speech.

Over his long career, part of Cherry’s shtick has been making outrageous statements, about players, hockey teams, the state of the sport and, well, any topic that comes to mind.

But Cherry identified a particular group in his rant — immigrants — as being the culprits. That’s where the consequences come in.

Cherry probably wasn’t fired so much for what he actually said — after all, this kind of rant is nothing new from him — but for a couple of less direct reasons. Public outcry tops the list, of course. If people hadn’t reacted so quickly and strongly, he might still be sitting in Coaches’ Corner.

A more subtle reason is the risk the network would be taking by supporting Cherry. They would be risking advertising income, but also risking that Cherry would make another, and even more offensive rant.

It’s understandable that people love Cherry and think he got a rough deal, but really, he finally tipped the balance for the people paying his contract.

Cherry isn’t the only one who doesn’t understand that there are consequences to words. South of the border, U.S. president Donald Trump managed to dig his impeachment pit a little deeper by tweeting, during the hearings, that everywhere the witness went “turn bad,” along with other remarks.

That, of course, qualifies as cyberbullying, and intimidation of not only the witness on the stand (in real-time, no less) but upcoming witnesses.

Trump, of course, said he was exercising his freedom of speech and can say what he wants. True, but don’t expect it won’t be used against you.

Cherry and Trump’s offences are just two high-profile examples. But saying the wrong thing at the wrong time is something that we are all guilty of sometimes.

Some complain that we live in a world where small offences like Cherry’s comment are being blown out of proportion. Sometimes they are, but in the end, isn’t it showing respect for others better than the lack of it.

Keep the streets clear; drive safely

By Breanne Massey Special to the Pioneer In an effort to make Columbia Valley streets safer and cleaner, the District of Invermere (DOI) would like to issue a friendly reminder to the community about pitching in to tidy up pathways for foot traffic and roads in preparation for snow removal this winter.

Up to 20 tickets have been issued to repeat offenders who have cars with expired licence plates or for boats and trailers parked on the street without a vehicle for more than 48 hours.

Mark Topliff, DOI’s bylaw enforcement officer, explained that the process for ticketing only impacts repeat offenders.

“The town itself won’t give fines out unless it’s a repeat offender,” he said.

“There’s been several of those (repeat offenders) right now too.”

First and second-time offenders receive warnings if they do not obey the DOI’s bylaws. If the issue persists after two warnings, vehicles will be towed, which, on average, runs about $100 for in-town tows and $30 per day for storage of each vehicle.

“The big one for bylaw right now – because it’s November – is trailers and boats are being parked on the roadway, which isn’t allowed for longer than 48 hours unless they’re attached to a vehicle,” Mr. Topliff reported, noting that five tickets were issued on the morning of Wednesday, November 13th alone.

“We have lots and lots of cars with expired licence plates. We need to get everything off the road for snow clearing.”

In addition, Mr. Topliff urges drivers to be mindful about driving safely this season.

“I almost got run over this morning,” he said. “They come right up to the crosswalk and hit the brakes then they slide right into it . . . When it snows, everybody has to learn how to drive again. It’s slippery outside.”

He added there’s no reason to rush when you are operating on Valley time.

“Take an extra 10 minutes in (your) day and calm down,” Mr. Topliff said, adding he even saw incidents of road rage on Remembrance Day. “We have a beautiful little community here. So, people should take their time and enjoy the mountains, not to mention the ski hill is going to open up soon so we’re going to start seeing some more traffic.”

House-numbering complaints raise red flags for emergency crews A lack of house-numbering on streets within the DOI has raised alarm bells for emergency responders in the Valley.

According to Mr. Topliff, several calls have been fielded at the DOI in response to the number of homes within the community that currently do not have visible house numbers because of the potential impact to firefighters, ambulance drivers and other emergency crews.

“It’s important for fire service, ambulance or bylaw,” he explained to the Pioneer. “It’s not a law, but everyone should have (a visible address) out for their own peace of mind. Ambulances have to have a physical address.”

Mr. Topliff has been fielding complaints from emergency crews by putting up reminders to homeowners about the importance of clearly displaying an address. His goal is to help the community understand the value of this effort.

“Emergency services have contacted me numerous times because there’s literally hundreds of houses with no house numbers that can be seen,” he said. “When I go around and see a house, I like to put a reminder on the door. That’s something that should be looked at all the time…

Some emergency vehicles cannot respond without a physical address.”

Manny Osborne-Paradis launching comeback after gruesome leg injury

It’s almost a year ago to the day that Manuel Osborne-Paradis crashed at Lake Louise, Alta., in his first training run for his opening race of the World Cup ski season.

Emotions were already frayed that week in the sport’s tight-knit community. Canadian teammate Broderick Thompson had suffered a season-ending knee injury days earlier at nearby Nakiska. It was the one-year anniversary of the death of French skier David Poisson on the same Alberta hill.

“So it was kind of a tough time… the thoughts were there,” Mr. Osborne-Paradis said.

Physically, the 35-year-old Invermere resident was feeling great. His equipment was responding well. But halfway down his run, Mr. Osborne-Paradis made a “silly mistake, a lackadaisical turn where I wasn’t over the outside ski like I should have been.”

He hit some soft snow, and went sailing head over heels into the safety nets, shattering his tibia and fibula so thoroughly there was concern he might lose his leg.

Certainly few people ever thought he’d ski again.

“I hadn’t even stopped falling and I was thinking ‘Uh-oh, this is broken,’” Mr. Osborne-Paradis said.

Mr. Osborne-Paradis hadn’t talked publicly much about that horrible day. His future had been so uncertain.

But he is mounting a return, hoping to cap his career at the 2022 Beijing Olympics in what would be a remarkable comeback story.

Recounting that day, the skier said medical personnel were quick to reach the mangled 11-time World Cup medallist. One of them popped a Fentanyl in his mouth for the pain. They rolled him on his side — his leg too crushed to transport him on his back — and airlifted him off the mountain to a Calgary hospital.

Canadian veteran Erik Guay was at the top of the hill readying for his run, and heard his teammate’s screams over the coaches’ radios. Mr. Guay announced his retirement later that week.

“We were all under a lot of pressure at that time, and it would be tough when you have teammates falling every week and hurting themselves,” Mr. Osborne-Paradis said. “As real as it is in our sport that injuries are bound to happen, and it’s more of a when not if, when they start happening every week it’s too close to reality.”

Sitting in a posh hotel in downtown Toronto where Alpine Canada was set to celebrate its 100th anniversary, Mr. Osborne-Paradis scrolled through his phone during an interview with a reporter. There were photos from his hospital bed with wife Lana. There were photos of the deep gash in his leg, that had to be reopened several times to relieve compartment syndrome. His tibial fracture as a 5 out of 6 on the Schatzker Scale of severity. A 6 usually occurs in a fatality, Mr. Osborne-Paradis said — such as when the engine block of a car is driven up through the leg.

He had two major surgeries and seven minor ones over 12 days. His bones are patched together by plates, 13 screws and bone cement. Doctors couldn’t save the tibia, replacing it with a cadaver’s hip bone.

His case has become well-known among Calgary’s medical community.

“I was walking around the golf course the other day and this woman was walking her dog, and said ‘Are you Manny? I’m a doctor in Calgary, I’ve heard about your leg, and oh my god it was nasty,”’ he said.

It wasn’t a stretch that Mr. Osborne-Paradis was told he’d never ski again.

“Yeah with that attitude you’re never going to ski again,” he said. “But the only reason I’ve stood on the podium or won races is because you’re defying odds. If you just looked at the odds, nobody would ever join sports, and so I feel like this is just another bump in the road.

“My team and my sponsors and myself, we all had

a goal of making it to the next Olympics, and at this point, there’s just no counting that out. There’s a process in place to get back. It’s possible. I was skiing at a high level, and if I can get back to 95 per cent or 100 per cent, there’s no doubt in my mind and my team’s mind that I can stand on the podium again.”

There have certainly been setbacks in his recovery. He pushed it too hard in the gym during his rehabilitation, breaking all but four of the screws. Doctors opted against another surgery, so there those screws remain. It knocked him back in his recovery more than two months.

He still hasn’t been cleared to ski, but predicts he’ll be back on the snow sometime this winter. He plans to race again next season.

He knows there’ll be fear when he’s crouched in the start hut for that first run when he returns. But fear is a big part of any ski racer’s career.

“You’re always prepared to be injured with skiing,” Mr. Osborne-Paradis said. “You learn to conquer those demons and every race there’s something that scares you.

That’s what the training is for … it’s normalizing the extremes that we do.”

Along with his rehab, the world championship bronze medallist is completing a sport management program at Harvard.

His daughter Sloane turns three later this month, and Lana, a personal trainer with a women’s health online group — www.blastfitness.ca — is pregnant with their second child.

If his comeback is derailed, Mr. Osborne-Paradis said he’ll leave the sport fulfilled, all of his childhood dreams reached.

“I’m not out there to prove that I need to be better, I think that I’ve achieved this high level of skiing and this amazing career that I’ve been humbled to experience . . . that’s just through sheer hard work, determination and mental tenacity, and this is just another battle to deal with.”

After the accident, Manny had nine surgeries in 12 days.

Lance thinks some people who could benefit from the meetings might be ashamed of their drug use and embarrassed to attend.

“We all know you’re out there. Don’t be shy,” he said. “It’s no big secret. We all know you use drugs.

Please, go get help. I’d have more respect for you for going to get help than I would to just see you rot at home f—ing getting high,” he said.

He suspects others with addictions might not be coming to Narcotics Anonymous because they are in denial.

“Even if you don’t think you have a problem, come listen to other people’s stories,” he said. “You don’t necessarily need to admit you’re an addict, but you need to come and maybe see what an actual addict looks like if you don’t think you are one because you’ll see a lot of yourself in someone.”

Lance’s story is that he started using drugs at parties and escalated to doing cocaine alone whenever he could. His wife left, he lost friends and family, and his work was in jeopardy. Eventually his addiction grew so fierce that he stopped caring about whether his next high would take his life.

Lance’s addiction continued until – at risk of losing his girlfriend and their baby – he fought to gain control of his life.

“You f— your life up. You ruin yourself. If I would have kept going, where would I be?” he said.

“It was bad. I should be dead.”

Since Lance began his recovery in March of 2018, he’s learned to face his problems head on.

“There’s just better ways to handle trauma in your life, and unfortunately most people will resort to a bottle or a drug. Or suicide at the worst-case

scenario. And I completely understand how it’s super overwhelming and stressful,” he said.

“Everything you look at as a problem prior or during drug use, it’s all solvable. Put the drugs down and face it. If you don’t face your problems, they’re never going to go away. Just facing them and dealing with them is the biggest thing.”

For instance, when he owned up to his money troubles, Lance talked with his creditor and was able to arrange a payment plan; a much better solution, he said, than masking the problem with drugs.

“It’s been good. It’s hard. You just can’t overwhelm yourself. Just one day at a time, right? Step by step,” he said.

Now that he’s doing better, Lance wants to help others in their recoveries too.

“I just want this problem to rid the Valley,” he said. “I just got to keep grinding, I guess, right? I want to be supportive to the community and give back for being such a sh— ass person.”

Sergeant Darren Kakuno, the detachment commander for the Columbia Valley RCMP, said overdoses in the community in recent years have claimed lives.

“I myself welcome any counselling services that address the drug addictions in our area. These addictions are very difficult to overcome. And those with the addictions, they require all the support we can offer,” he said when the Narcotics Anonymous group started up.

Valley YouTuber sets sights on survival show stardom

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The problem with eating gophers is there is just not quite enough meat on them to satisfy a full-grown man out in the bush.

The upside is there are plenty of them for the pickings, and they taste good, according to backcountry adventurist Greg Ovens. He and fellow adventurer Zach Fowler spent 30 days in the backcountry behind Canal Flats this past summer, filming a YouTube series now being released to the public.

“They taste like rabbit; they’re good. There’s just not a lot on them,” Mr. Ovens said of the gophers.

Mr. Fowler and Mr. Ovens met while they were both on a History channel show called ‘Alone,’ filmed in Patagonia. Mr. Fowler launched a YouTube channel following his win of that season’s show; his channel, Fowler’s Makery and Mischief, has 480,000 subscribers.

Mr. Fowler started a new series called ‘30 Day Survival Challenge,’ filming the first series in Texas. He brought the show up to Canal Flats for the second season to film alongside his Patagonia pal Mr. Ovens.

The goal of the challenge was to catch and forage for all their food and live in the backwoods for the month of July, filming the whole thing along the way. On the YouTube series, viewers will get to watch as the pair explore different backcountry locations, make bow drill fires, use primitive methods to trap animals, fish, and even watch

as Mr. Ovens makes a homemade fishing rod.

There were some unexpected adventures along the way, like when they went to a hike-in lake, planning for a day-trip. However, they discovered that a vehicle bridge that used to take people much closer to the lake had been removed, so it was twice as far to hike to the destination.

“We get in there, it’s way up in there, and it’s too late to go back to the vehicle. So, we had to spend the night, but we didn’t bring any bedding or nothing. That was a rough night,” said Mr. Ovens.

What made the whole month adventure far more challenging, Mr. Ovens reported, was needing to pack the 20+ pounds of camera gear, and make sure to get footage of each activity. They used solar panels to charge the batteries, and packed drones and GoPros to shoot the footage.

Locals will enjoy the great aerial footage over the Columbia Valley and the scenic surroundings Mr. Ovens takes Mr. Fowler to over the course of the 30 days.

“I came up with three different locations, all fairly close together,” Mr. Ovens said. “I wanted him to see different kinds of terrain. We had the vehicle for the first week or so when we were going from spot to spot. But the last spot, we had to build roads and all kinds of stuff.”

Battling bad weather, risks of wildlife encounters, unexpected delays and the constant search for food make for an interesting watch. Viewers can follow the adventures on Mr. Fowler’s channel, and also subscribe to Mr. Oven’s channel, ‘Ovens Rocky Mountain Bushcraft,’ to watch his footage of the 30 Day Survival Challenge.

Mr. Ovens is hoping the channel takes off and gets to the point where he can get out of his day job of drywalling. After the 30 Day Challenge is released, he has some other video ideas to keep his channel filled with fresh content. For Mr. Ovens, the YouTube channel is a dream come true, filming and hopefully making money off what he loves to do.

“I like it,” Mr. Ovens said. “I wouldn’t do anything else.”

After 30 days of foraging, fishing, and catching their food, how did the friends celebrate the end of their adventure?

“We got the heck out of there. We came back, and we ordered pizza.”

Zach Fowler had never been to this part of the world until he came up to film season 2 of the 30 Day Survival Challenge with friend Greg Ovens. From his home in Maine, Mr. Fowler told the Pioneer he was thoroughly impressed with the Columbia Valley.

“I thought I came from a big place here in Maine and was having big adventures, until I got out there and saw how big the world really was, how big those mountains are. Driving hours to these special spots that Greg would take us, to film and to fish and experience some new piece of wildlife, was amazing,” Mr. Fowler said.

Through the month, he describes, “We get further and further up into the mountains, and build these fortresses up in the tree, drawbridges that come up and down, with giant weighted counterweights. It’s like Swiss family Robinson meets the Rocky Mountains.”

He was impressed with the amount of logging roads that allowed them to access beautiful, remote places.

“You could go almost anywhere: hours and hours out in the mountains and to these little parking spots where you hike up into these beautiful lakes in different locations. It’s so accessible because of these roads and what the logging companies have done out there, maintaining it and keeping it beautiful the way they do.”

There were some challenges of this season given the time of year they planned to film (July), Mr. Fowler reported. While there were enough wild foods to harvest, many were not calorie-dense, so it required a lot more effort to stay satiated.

“We’d have great meals, and we’d be full at times. But there was plenty of lean times in between each one of those where we were scrabbling to keep our wits . . . and harvest more food as we went on day by day.”

When interviewed, a couple episodes of this season’s 30 Day Survival Challenge had already been released on Mr. Fowler’s channel. He said the reaction so far was phenomenal. His first season, filmed in Texas, saw millions of viewers tune in. This season has already had hundreds of thousands of viewers watching the episodes online. The last time the Rockies met the Ghostriders, it was on home ice with the Rockies earning a resounding win. So they entered the rink ready to face down the ’riders again, this time on Fernie’s home turf. It was an exciting, high-scoring game for the KIJHL rivals.

Fernie came prepared, netting the first goal two and a half minutes into the first period. Rockies’ Palmer Sinclair answered back a minute later, tying the scoreboard one-all. Fernie threw two more in the net, and Rockies’ Tristan Lambert wrapped up the first with another goal for the Columbia Valley.

The second period saw Gavin Fleck and Palmer Sinclair add two more goals for the Rockies, with the Ghostriders adding another three to their tally. Halfway through the third, Fleck snuck one more past the Ghostriders’ goalie, ending the game 5-6 for Fernie.

Saturday, November 16th, the Rockies faced the North Okanagan Knights at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena. Both teams scored in the first period the Rockies’ by Caileb Berge - tied up the teams. Entering the second period strong, Hunter Beckett slammed another puck into the Knight’s net, but was quickly tied up again by the Knights, who then took the lead with another goal. Tristan Lambert took charge to bring another goal on the scoreboard for the Rockies in the third, ending the third 3-all. Overtime period had the crowd on the edge of their seats as the clock ticked down and no winning goals shot. Finally, with only 3:30 left on the clock, the Rockies’ Jonathan Milligan raised the barn roof with the winning goal.
