Cupful of love at food bank grand opening

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Columbia Valley Food Bank opened the doors at its brand-new home in the Albert Cooper Building at 201 – 7th Avenue on Saturday, November 2nd.

“We had a dream, and the dream has come to fruition,” executive director Lawrie Mack told the crowd of dignitaries, volunteers and community members who gathered for the celebration.

Susan Clovechok, Area F director, said the occasion was bittersweet because while it’s unfortunate that any-

one is in need, it’s sweet that the Valley comes together to support its neighbours. Gerry Wilkie, Area G director, said “there’s no finer example” of a community with health and integrity than one that takes care of its people.

Clara Reinhardt, Radium’s mayor, told those gathered that it’s important to continue to support the food bank and keep the shelves stocked.

The food bank’s most needed items are cans of: fruit, pasta sauce, brown beans, fish, vegetables, tomatoes and soup. Jars of peanut butter are also in high demand.

In addition to looking for donations, Mr. Mack is also calling for volunteers.

After four undersized bull elk were shot and abandoned in the Valley late in the hunting season, conservation officer Greg Kruger is asking the public for help tracking down the culprits.

“This puts hunters in a bad light, and we don’t consider these folks that are doing this hunters. We consider them poachers, and we would ask the other recreating public and hunters out there to please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity,” he said.

All four elk were left to decay, and none of the meat could be donated to the Columbia Valley Food Bank or to disadvantaged families as is the standard practice when animals are killed illegally.

“It was too late. We were not able to salvage any of the meat,” he said.

He estimated that each elk would have provided over 400 pounds of meat.

“It’s an absolute shame to waste that,” he said. “It’s unacceptable that people are abandoning these animals after they are illegally killed.”

The four abandoned elk had antlers which ranged from 4x5 points to 5x5 points

instead of the legally-required 6x6 points.

The head of a well-undersized spike mule deer was also reported, while the rest of the carcass had been removed from the site.

“We understand mistakes happen, but people need to take the time to make sure they positively identify the animal as being a legal animal before they pull the trigger,” he said. “It just comes down to good hunting ethics.”

When someone mistakenly shoots an undersized animal, the culprit needs to come clean immediately and contact Conservation Officer Services, Mr. Kruger said.

“The repercussions are much less when people do report that they made that mistake,” he said.

Mr. Kruger asks anyone with information on the poached elk and deer or any other poaching infractions to call the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) line at 1-877-952-RAPP (7277). Anonymous tips are welcome and could result in rewards.

This year five hunting mistakes were self-reported. Those cases involved an undersized moose, an undersized elk and a few mule deer that were mistaken for white tail deer.

Mounties urge safety for pedestrians and drivers alike ICBC launches pedestrian safety campaign

By Breanne Massey Special to the Pioneer As the days end earlier, the Mounties are urging the Columbia Valley community to stay safe outdoors.

Over the last 13 months, four pedestrian collisions have resulted in injuries that have been reported to the Columbia Valley Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

Three of those four accidents occurred when pedestrians were in the north-facing crosswalk at the intersection of Fourth Street and Seventh Avenue in Invermere.

The fourth accident occurred on a logging road, according to the RCMP. “No one wants to be involved in a motor vehicle collision as it impacts everyone from the drivers, pedestrians, good Samaritans (who) provide First Aid and even first responders,” said Cpl. Louis-Philippe Gendron-Fafard.

“As users of the roads, we each have a responsibility to be aware of our environment and not be complacent on our daily travels. Every (kind of) road user should commit to behaviour that provides safer roads.”

While no patterns have been clearly established to suggest any malice behind the incidents that occurred at approximately around noon on July 7th, 2019, around 8 a.m. on Oct. 23rd, 2018, and roughly 4 p.m. on Nov. 4th, 2019, there are some basic precautions that the community can take to stay safe for both drivers and foot-traffic alike.

This past week, November 4th through November 10th, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 66 calls for service.

The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to. • On Monday, November 4th, several items were turned into the Columbia Valley RCMP that were located in a cardboard box on Athalmer Road. Some of the items in the box included a small amount of foreign currency and coins. The owner can contact the Columbia Valley RCMP to identify and claim the contents. • On Monday, November 4th at about 3:45 p.m., a pedestrian was struck by a pickup truck at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 4th Street in Invermere. The driver of the pickup truck was eastbound and making a left turn onto 7th Avenue when she struck an eastbound pedestrian. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver remained at the scene and provided assistance to the pedestrian. The driver of

the pickup was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian. • On Tuesday, November 6th, an individual reported falling victim to a phone scam.

The individual received a phone call from a person claiming to be from Service Canada.

He was told his social insurance number had been compromised and used for illegal activity. The individual was threatened with arrest and was given the option of setting up a new SIN by purchasing a $500 Google Play. The individual complied with the demand before realizing he had fallen victim to the scam.

Police are reminding the public that legitimate organizations will not accept gift cards as payment. • On Thursday, November 8th at about 8:40 a.m., two separate motor vehicle collisions were reported on Highway 93/95 in Fairmont Hot Springs. The first incident occurred after the driver of a Pontiac Wave lost control of her car and rolled into a ditch. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The second incident involved a Ford pickup rear-ending a slow moving commercial truck and trailer. None of the occupants were injured. Freezing rain had passed through the area prior to the collisions and played a factor in both collisions.

“Ultimately, pedestrians and drivers are both responsible to help ensure everyone makes it to their destinations safely,� said Cpl. Gendron-Fafard.

In addition, ICBC entered a partnership with TransLink and the Community Policing Volunteers to recently launch a campaign to raise awareness about driving and walking safely as daylight hours decrease as the province moves quickly into winter. “Even when drivers proceed with caution, it’s hard to see pedestrians at this time of year when visibility is poor,� wrote Lindsay Matthews, ICBC’s Vice-President of Public Affairs and Driver Licensing in a recent press release. “Crashes with pedestrians are highest between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. every day, when most of us are commuting home from school and work. Please focus on the road and leave your phone alone. It’s time we all do our part to create a safer driving culture in B.C.�

Based on data from ICBC’s five-year average between 2014 and 2018, 1,200 pedestrians are injured

ICBC in BC between October and January.

In the Southern Interior region of B.C., ICBC records 280 pedestrian collisions on average annually.

One in five deaths that occur in collisions include foot-traffic, which is why there’s a provincial effort to raise awareness about the growing issue.

A taxpayer’s penny for your thoughts

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com The District of Invermere (DOI) wants to know how you’d like your tax dollars spent and what you’d like so much that you’d voluntarily open your wallet.

Mayor Al Miller is inviting residents to join him and other council members for coffee and conversation the morning of Thursday, November 14th. Council will be holding meetings at A&W at 8:30 a.m., at The Bistro Restaurant at 9:45 a.m. and at the Invermere Bakery at 10:45 a.m..

He said council used to hold budget discussions at the district office, but found it challenging to get people to attend. Instead of asking the community to come to council, council decided to go out to the community.

“There’s usually people there that will take the time to comment because you’re coming to their turf, to their comfort level,” he said, adding that the coffee meetings are “a great chance to talk to people and really get their concerns.”

A few common issues he’s been hearing are complaints about potholes and challenges around housing.

“I like open dialogue, and I like people to tell me what they think so that we can then take those thoughts and ideas and try and deal with them,” he said.

The DOI is also conducting a survey in advance of the 2020 budget to ask residents questions around what they want and how badly they want it.

For instance, if you support a tax in-

crease in exchange for more environmental programs, how much would you be willing to pay? If you want to see the DOI offer food-waste collection, how much would you shell out for it? If you want the DOI to provide more services, how much of a tax increase would you support?

The questions around how much people would be willing to pay to have the services they would like are intended to gauge how serious residents are about their concerns, Mayor Miller said.

“Sometimes we’ll have people saying we need to have such-and-such asset,” he said. “So what value do they hold for that?

How much are they willing to pay for something like that? It just gives us a little bit (of information) as to how strongly they feel about something.”

He said he’s noticed that people’s interest levels can drop when they realize what they want comes with a cost.

The DOI budget survey also asks about hours at the Althalmer garbage and recycling drop-off point, possibilities for the Lake Windermere Resort Lands the DOI bought, the potential for taking over James Chabot Provincial Park, boundary expansion, replacing culverts in Abel Creek, saving up for water and sewer investments, and more.

Members of the Panorama Fire Department remained on-scene following a single-unit fire in Taynton Lodge in Panorama Wednesday, November 6th.

“We had 14 firefighters and all four trucks respond to the call and the crew was able to keep the fire contained to the single unit,” says Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Service Chief Jim Miller. “The quick action of our crew made the difference between an isolated fire and a potentially much larger situation. They did an outstanding job.”

The fire was confined to the vacant unit and has been completely extinguished. The lodge did not have full occupancy and was evacuated as a precaution. The building has now been ventilated and all occupants are able to return to their suites.

There were no injuries in the blaze and the focus has now turned to the investigation to determine the exact cause.

Road sense

When I went back to a large city we had lived in for several years, I noticed something funny.

I found myself peering into the windows of passing motorists. Face after unrecognizable face stared straight ahead instead of looking back towards me. It took me a little while to clue in that I was doing something quite unusual for a large city, but commonplace here: looking to see if I knew the driver passing by.

In a city of more than 70,000, it is absurd to think you might see someone you know. When we lived there, I think I would run into a friend perhaps once every couple months if I was out shopping or walking around town.

I find in the Columbia Valley, it is unusual to go somewhere and not find a friend. I walked into a local grocery store last week and realized at the end of my shopping trip how strange it was that the only person I recognized was my cashier.

I have asked around and my experiences here are common. Many of us consider it a perk of living in a small community, to see people we know everywhere we go, and to look carefully at passing motorists to confirm if we know them. I often wave at vehicles I recognize (though sometimes they turn out to be ones that simply look like the vehicle of someone I know, so a stranger gets a friendly wave from me and likely drives off wondering who the heck that was flapping at them as they mind their own business on the road).

This is why the news that no less than four pedestrians have been hit in the Columbia Valley over the past 13 months came as quite the surprise to me. Call it naiveté, but I assumed when we have this level of familiarity with each other, we would drive extra carefully. There is a very good chance, after all, that you will either know the other driver, or that pedestrian crossing the street, or you will know someone who knows that person.

So, the lesson here? Drive carefully. Please take caution, especially at the intersection between the Columbia Valley Centre and Sobeys, where three reported incidents have occurred this year between pedestrians and cars.

You do not want to be that driver that hits a pedestrian, obviously. But what could make that situation even worse is if you look out your window and realize you hit someone you know. That’s a small-town fiasco you might never live down.

Correction The story about Smokehouse 93 in the November 7 Pioneer incorrectly identified the new restaurant as the Columbia Valley’s first smokehouse. In fact, Cabin Smokehouse, located at Panorama Mountain Resort, has been in operation for three years. The Pioneer apologizes for this error.

Story reconnects long-lost friends Dear Editor: This morning I stumbled across your story about Joe and Pauline Newhouse celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. The Newhouses were good friends of my parents when I was growing up in Edmonton. Your article captures their personalities so well!

I felt a special connection to Pauline as she emerged as a ceramics artist, as I was studying to become a painter a few years later. I still have (and use!) a set of three beautiful ceramic casseroles she made and gave to me as a wedding present in 1988. Their lifestyle inspired me to pursue my own “country living” on the sea coast of Nova Scotia.

Thank you for featuring this lovely couple who have been and remain an inspiration to me so many ways.

Filled with gratitude Dear Editor: Thanks to all who attended the Opening Ceremony of the new Columbia Valley Food Bank on Saturday, November 2nd. This project has taken months to complete, but years of hopes and dreams lead up to this moment.

The bequest from the estate of Albert Cooper was the single most important factor in getting us to think that we could move from our former small and somewhat cramped location (provided graciously by the District of Invermere) into a new building that would serve our current and future needs. Then a number of meetings with the District Mayors, Councils and Administrators lead to their decision to let us put up the new facility on their property adjacent to our old location.

The Columbia Basin Trust, Columbia Valley Community Foundation, Kootenay Savings Community Foundation, Sherry and Harvey Doerr, the DOI, RDEK areas F and G, and the town of Radium all made funds available to ensure that a portion of Mr. Cooper’s donation would be left to generate interest and thus ensure the ongoing viability of the CVFB. We also received amazing support with inkind donations or beneficial pricing from

Home Hardware, Village Sign Artists, Solar Country, Ken Willimont, Local View Printers, and many other businesses and individuals.

We also need to thank our current and past Board members and volunteers who keep our enterprise functioning through their work as customer service representatives, picking up and sorting donations, bringing in boxes, lending a hand at special events, repackaging items, shopping and shelving orders, and happily helping out wherever the need arise. Special thanks to Lawanda Neilsen’s committee for organizing and planning the opening, Al Miller, Will Nixon, Susan Clovechok, Gerry Wilkie, Clara Reinhardt, and Doug Clovechok who spoke at the event on behalf of their various constituencies.

Thanks too to the neighbours who put up with our building process for 4 months.

Here we explore some common myths about those three issues.

Underperformance Some people believe that, as a rule, mutual funds always underperform the index or more specifically, ETFs. While this is sometimes true, it is not always the case.

There are specific market environments in which ETFs and mutual funds outperform one another. For example, ETFs do well in periods where assets are appreciating quickly, such as during periods of market recovery. Perhaps the most famous example of this would be the financial crisis of 2008-2009.

While recovery periods can last a long time, it’s important to remember that the financial crisis and subsequent market correction were extreme and abnormal events. In normal markets, ETFs will always perform slightly worse than the index, while mutual funds at least have a chance to beat it.

Unsophisticated Managers As a matter of fact, some of the best money managers in the world are mutual fund managers, including Bill Gross, Peter Lynch and the Mawer team. Peter Lynch managed the Magellan fund for Fidelity Investments from 1977 to 1990, averaging a 29.2 per cent annual return. Bill Gross managed the PIMCO Total Return fund, and his success made it the world’s largest bond fund, with $270 billion in assets. And a $10,000 investment in Mawer’s New Canada fund back in 1988 would be worth over $546,000 today!

They’re Expensive Some people avoid mutual funds because there is a fee associated with owning them, known as a Management Expense Ratio (MER). The costs included in an MER consist of the fund’s operating expenses such as trading, record keeping, audit and legal, compliance,

reporting, fund valuation, taxes and management. For non-fee-based accounts, the MER also includes compensation paid to one’s financial advisor.

In truth, mutual fund MERs are comprised of the same expenses that a professional advisor and their firm would be responsible for to manage a similar portfolio of assets.

Those who want the expertise of a mutual fund manager but at a lower cost may consider using ETFs or individual stocks and bonds for moderately risky assets such as Canadian or US large-cap stocks, and mutual funds to buy complicated or exotic asset classes such as foreign stocks or global bonds. The key is to save money on simpler assets and make fees count by paying a professional to do what you can’t, or don’t have the expertise for.

Fees Don’t Matter On the other end of the spectrum are those who believe that mutual fund fees don’t matter as long as the fund’s bottom-line performance is good. This is also untrue.

The importance of a fund’s MER depends on the type of fund. For example, conservative mutual funds that invest in Government of Canada bonds tend to be very similar, meaning there is a narrow spread between the best and worst performers. In this case, the MER can be important. Moving up the risk spectrum to balanced and stock funds, however, the relationship between fees and returns weakens.

Beware of closet index funds that charge full fare. If a fund is heavily correlated to a major index, it’s best to find another that isn’t, or save the fees and buy an ETF instead. If the mutual fund is invested in good assets and is uncorrelated to major indexes, it would be difficult to replicate and is therefore offering value.

Final thoughts Though mutual funds have gotten a bad rap in recent years due to market conditions which led to an over-performance of ETFs, they still address important asset selection, allocation and risk management aspects of a well-diversified portfolio.

Mr. Root will have home-cooked menu items for sale at the market too. Ms. Root says he had worked as an executive chef in the Valley for about 10 years, but left all that behind to be more hands-on at home.

“He left all that behind so that we could do this journey together, which is both exciting and terrifying, and be self-employed (instead),” she says.

The Winter Wonderland Market came about because the couple wanted an event that could incorporate their own offerings as well as bring in a whole range of other vendors to suit every taste and style of shopper. The vendors all put a lot of effort into making their products, Ms. Root says, and urges shoppers to come down and support all of them this Saturday.

“Handmade is better. Period. And you can meet the person that’s making what you’re buying. That’s a pretty special connection,” says Ms. Root. “When you’re purchasing that thing, you’re touching that person’s life. And they’re literally doing a happy dance when you walk away.”

Don’t miss: Radium rentals rendezvous

By Dauna Ditson Radium council is considering requiring business licences for those operating short-term rentals from their properties. The Village will hold a town hall meeting to discuss the proposed plans at the Radium Hot Springs Centre at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 16th, a date that was chosen so part-time residents could plan to attend. The proposed business licenses would cost $100 per unit and require a contact person to be available 24 hours a day for inquiries or complaints.

Films celebrate passionate people and places Submitted by Wildsight Invermere The 6th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival comes to the Columbia Valley Centre on Saturday, November 23rd. Hosted and organized by Wildsight Invermere as its annual fundraiser, it’s a festival with a purpose.

Cam Gillies, the evening’s MC, explains why the Wild and Scenic Film Festival is unique. “It sits apart from hundreds of other festivals around the world by leaving you feeling inspired and motivated to make a difference in your own community. It puts our local work – and yours, too! – into the broader environmental and social context, and serves to remind us that we’re participants in a global movement for a more wild and scenic world.”

With over 150 films to choose from, Wildsight’s film selection committee worked hard to create the perfect mix of epic adventure and environmental advocacy. The films come from the flagship festival in Nevada City, California, held every January. After that, the Festival tours to over 200 communities; the Columbia Valley show always sells out.

This year’s program of 11 films includes a focus on water, plastics, young farmers, glaciers, creatures big and small (bees and polar bears), and a quirky story about fish eggs (actually, caviar). From mountain biking in the Himalayas to paddle boarding through the Florida Everglades, you will hear and see stories about very passionate people.

As the Columbia Valley faces controversial water bottling proposals, one film in particular illuminates the global problem with single-use plastics. In the documentary called JUNK, two men sail to Hawaii in a raft made of 15,000 plastic water bottles and rope made from 5,000 plastic bags in an effort to raise awareness about the proliferation of plastic waste.

Inspired by this example, the students at J.A.Laird Elementary School will participate in an art challenge to create a piece of artwork from recycled plastic. All submitted artwork will be exhibited at the Festival, and all entries will be eligible for a draw of a pair of Festival tickets.

Doors open at 5 p.m. with pizza, beer and wine. All waste will be composted at Blue Truck Farm, and everyone who brings his or her own plate will receive an extra door prize ticket. And as always, there will be a cash bar, a silent auction, 50/50 raffle

Most of us have heard of an ecological footprint, which measures the impact of one’s activities in terms of the required area of biologically productive land and water to produce goods consumed and absorb the waste generated. A water footprint is similar but is simply just a measure of humanity’s use of fresh water in volumes of water consumed or polluted. In our community we are very fortunate to have immediate access to fresh water when we need it. As you are likely aware this isn’t the case everywhere.

We all use water on a daily basis, but you may not be aware of just how much water you use or what might be using water. Almost everything we interact with on a daily basis has required water to be produced and delivered to us. In addition to the obvious ones, this includes our clothing, the food we eat, and the energy we use to power our homes. A water footprint is divided into three categories: green, blue, and grey. The green water footprint refers to water in the atmosphere that is absorbed into the soil, used by plants, and may be precipitation, transpiration or evaporation (for example, in our food). The blue water footprint is from surface or groundwater and may be evaporated, incorporated into a product, or water taken from a body of water for use (for example, the water that comes out of our showers). Lastly, the grey water footprint is the amount of fresh water required to assimilate pollutants to meet specific water quality standards (for example,

when our waste water goes to the treatment plant).

Each category is essential to our daily lives, and all interact with each other through the water cycle.

As a review, the water cycle describes the natural process in which water moves throughout the atmosphere using transpiration, evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. What is not included in the water cycle is the disturbance we cause by diverting, using, and polluting it. Although the earth is about 70 per cent water, only 2.5 per cent is freshwater. Of the freshwater almost 70 per cent of that is locked up in glaciers, leaving a very small amount of available freshwater for us to access for everything we use it for (from drinking to producing energy).

When we step back and take a look at how much water we use on a daily basis, and how little water is available it becomes clear that this

is a vital resource. We need to make very careful decisions about how we choose to use water. This is especially important for our region as we are at the headwaters of the Columbia River. The water that comes out of the ground in Canal Flats continues to flow all the way to the ocean, and anything we do to our water do will have an impact downstream.

Two bottled water facility proposals have come up in the last few months in our region. It is important to consider not only the water that would be taken out of the ground, and the potential downstream impacts, but also the water used to produce the bottles, run the facility, transport the product, and recycle the waste when considering support for these types of projects.

March 19, 1950 ~ November 7, 2019 With great sadness we announce the passing of Linda Gail Barkley on November 7, 2019 in Hanna, Alberta.

Linda was born in Yellowknife N.W.T. and grew up in Grey Creek, Rossland and Summerland B.C. She married Cliff on May 8, 1971 and together they had three wonderful children, Christine, Tia and Brian.

Linda enjoyed many years cheering for Rockies Hockey, watching her children grow with Girl Guides and Boy Scouts.

She also loved spending time with the Columbia Valley Classics Car Club, MADD and the Richdale Community Club. Linda also spent her career caring for others as a nurse.

Linda is survived by her loving husband Cliff, daughters Tia (Randy), Christine, granddaughter Victoria (Kale), sisters Elaine Pigeau, and Anna-Marie (Steve) Woodbridge, many nieces and nephews and cousins. There were many kids that referred to Linda as Granny: Jersey, Josie, Maycee, Dexter and Clay.

She was predeceased by her parents Bill and Amy LaPlante, son Brian and brother-in-law Len Pigeau.

Services will be held Saturday, November 16, 2019 at the Catholic Church in Invermere, B.C. at 11 a.m. followed by a graveside Interment, then a tea at the Wilmer Hall.

Squeezing in fitness classes at VFC

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Valley Fitness Centre (VFC) may be bursting at the seams, but the gym is now offering 41 weekly classes – more than ever – to squeeze you in.

Teresa Rogal, the managing director for Valley Fitness Centre, said: “we have only so much space down here, and how we can sell more memberships, get more people in shape, is by adding classes and filling them.”

Since up to 30 people can fit into a single class, she said bumping up the class offerings was “a no brainer” as a means to comfortably pack more people into the gym.

She said the extra classes are good for everyone because members can take as many classes as they’d like.

“We want people in here getting fit, and we want it to be fun. A lot of people like to be led by the classes and they love the challenge. It’s like having a personal trainer in front of you, quite frankly.

You’ve got this wonderful instructor who is motivating and encouraging and watching your safety,” she said.

A full-to-capacity crowd of Body Blasters crammed into Jennette St. Jean’s class on Friday, November 8th.

Photo by Dauna Ditson Ever since Debbie Casey took a yoga class around four years ago, she’s been a dedicated gym user.

“That was it: I was hooked, totally hooked,” she said.

Now she goes to VFC every day and takes as many as three classes in a single day. You get a much shorter answer asking which classes she hasn’t taken than which ones she has. Out of the whole course menu, the only ones she hasn’t yet tasted are salsa, belly dance and spin.

“It’s just fun. It’s relaxing. It’s a stress reliever. You meet new people,” she said.

“Probably it’s the instructors that really clinch it for me . . . The instructors we have are just very dedicated, very amazing, very educated, enthusiastic. They make your workouts fun.”

She doesn’t mind that VFC is so busy these days. In fact, she enjoys it.

“It’s worked to my benefit because now there’s more classes to choose from,” she said.

Ms. Casey signs in online to make sure she can secure a place in her favourite classes and encourages others to do the same.

“There’s always something going on.

It’s a hub of activity there,” she said. “It’s addicting really, and we are really lucky to have such an affordable venue.”

Ms. Rogal has been hearing from others like Ms. Casey who are thrilled with the variety and abundance of classes.

“They’re loving it,” she said. “I’m confident that we’re on the right track.”

Ms. Rogal encourages members and drop-in guests to check out VFC’s new dance offerings, which still have plenty of room for everyone from beginners to experienced dancers.

Belly dance is offered on Monday and Friday evenings, and instructor Joan Fentano brings props from silky scarves for twirling and jingly belts for shaking.

Her swing / salsa class runs on Wednesday and Friday evenings and is open to individuals, couples and friends.

The next goal was scored at the end of the first period by Tyler Collies with an assist by Conner Brooks. Adam Kubian, then scored with assists by Lukas Pfisterer and Braxton Gulliford. Adam Kubian scored again at the end of the period, assisted by Brayden Mastroianni and Lukas Pfisterer. Brayden Mastroianni then scored assisted by Lukas Pfisterer and Adam Kubian. The 6th goal was scored

by Braxton Gulliford, and the final goal was scored by Connor Von Niessen, as-

sisted by Braxton Gulliford and Leif Dubreuil. Great team game boys!

The PeeWee B team played a home game against a very tough Kimberley team, losing in a lopsided game. Cohen Lawrick was stellar in goal or the score would have been more lopsided.

The Atom B team traveled to Kimberley where they met a determined Kimberley team. The team played their best, but lost.

The Midget Girls team were to host an Alberta team, who at the last minute decided the roads were not conducive for travel, and forfeited the game. The girls played an inter-squad and enjoyed their win. This win counts in the Alberta tiering system.

The Bantam Zone team won three games against Tri-Cities, and Erik Fanderl had his first shut-out of the year.

Rockies race for weekend wins Palmer Sinclair ain’t afraid of no ghost, as he races ahead of a Ghostrider during the home game Friday, November 8th. The Rockies whomped the Fernie Ghostriders during Friday’s game, with a 5-2 win for the hometown crowd, including many family members who trekked to town for Rockies’ Family Weekend. Khale Skinner, assisted by Nikolas Scheiwiller, put the Rockies on the board in the first period. Fernie answered back in the second, but were soon overpowered again by Rockies’ Colby Phillips, assisted by Gavin Fleck. The third saw plenty of pucks pushing the twine, with another three goals by Rockies and one by the Ghostriders.

Saturday, the Rockies met face to face with the Summerland Steam, working for a win but walking away with 2 goals, one shy of the Steam’s winning scoreboard.

But Rockies didn’t go down without a fight, forcing an overtime period to make the play. Rockies goals of the night were scored by Alex Novakowski (assisted by Gareth Nicholas and Benjamin Lake), and Johnathan Milligan (assisted by Khale Skinner and Kyle Lawrence).

Froggers Chocolate brings novelty treats to the Valley

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com “Why I put a jube jube in that chocolate I have no idea, but I tell you it’s one of the best things I ever did,” said Suzanne Pouliot. “I’ve probably done a million jube jubes now.”

Those first chocolate-dunked jube jubes were only meant to be tasty Christmas gifts for her friends and family. On other occasions, she’d crafted ornaments and frames for them.

But her chocolate jube jubes didn’t seem homemade. One of her friends was shocked to learn that she dunked them herself and was so impressed that he encouraged her to keep making her fanciful creations and to try selling them.

Ms. Pouliot did and turned her idea into a home-based business called Froggers Chocolate.

While she started her business in Calgary 13 years ago, she recently moved it, and herself, to Canal Flats.

She and her husband had been visiting the Valley for a decade and finding it harder and harder to head back to Calgary at the end of their trips.

Resolved to stop leaving, they moved to Canal Flats in May, where they both work from home.

“We bit the big one and just decided that’s what we wanted to do and then we did it,” she

said. “We love the lifestyle out here. It’s quiet. It’s into nature.”

While she said her business was doing well in Calgary with a customer base of 250 people and a dozen corporate clients, she’s not sure how business will go in her smaller new market.

“I’m not expecting necessarily to do as well as I did in Calgary,” she said. “I feel like I’m almost starting from scratch again.”

In addition to her chocolate-covered jube jubes, Ms. Pouliot makes chocolate-dipped licorice, sponge toffee, sesame snaps and more.

“People will sit down and they can’t hold themselves back,” she said, warning that her products can be almost addictive. “I just never really met anybody that didn’t like them.”

From hostess gifts to stocking stuffers, birthday gifts, potlucks or wedding favours, she said: “it doesn’t matter what occasion, it’s going to be accepted and loved and people are going to want more.”

Ms. Pouliot was at the Canal Flats Fall Fair earlier in October to introduce herself and her treats to her new community but isn’t yet sure where her products will be available going forward.

Day of national bereavement

Submitted by Michèle Neider Executive Director, Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley November 19th is National Bereavement Day in Canada. On this day, all Canadians are invited to think about those who have passed away. We remember and commemorate the special people we loved and lost in our lives. Grief impacts us all, physically, socially, emotionally, cognitively and spiritually. Grief can affect our sense of meaning and purpose. While grief is the internal and natural emotional reaction to loss, mourning is the external and shared social response to that loss. The Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley plays an essential role in supporting residents of the Valley in their grieving and mourning process.

As we approach the holiday season, this can be a difficult and lonely time for people who are grieving. No one should be left alone, and no one must. On November 29th, the Hospice will be hosting the Tree of Lights event. This a free evening of Commemoration and Remembrance for all those who are no longer with us. Trees in Radium Hot Springs, Invermere, Fairmont, and Canal Flats will be specially lit for the occasion and the names of those who have left us will be recognized. Lights are available to purchase at the Hospice’s office or online at www.hospicesocietycv.com for $10.

There has been a trend in more recent years where people choose to endorse and contribute to a non-profit organization instead of purchasing things during the holiday season. Many young families, for instance, encourage and educate their children on being socially involved by discussing ways of improving the health of the planet and its people instead of being focused on receiving gifts.

Perhaps you have thought of supporting a non-profit of your choice?

While there are many ways to donate to the Hospice Society, two of them can leave a long-lasting mark on the community. You can create a legacy fund in the name of a loved one whereas money or property can be willed, or you could choose to support the Hospice Society through its existing Endowment Fund. The primary purpose of the fund is to ensure the long-term financial health of the organization. The fund is managed through the Columbia Valley Community Foundation and each year, the Hospice receives the annual interests accrued. This allows the Hospice Society to continue to offer numerous support programs, all of which are provided free of charge.

To be a member means that you will feel good that you are supporting the Windermere Valley Museum and Archives. With this support you receive four newsletters a year, an invite to the museum gatherings, and an invitation to our once-a-month Old Movies presentation. Also as a member you have access to the historic library and access as a researcher to the archives. The Museum and Archives

become yours.

Those that are members will get a renewal form attached to the November newsletter. (If you don’t get an attachment that means you are paid up for 2020.) This is one of our fundraisers.

We look forward to renewing the old and meeting the new members. In return, we as the executive of the Windermere District Historical Society promise to look after your investment.
