The Columbia Valley Food Bank opened the doors at its brand-new home in the Albert Cooper Building at 201 – 7th Avenue on Saturday, November 2nd.

“We had a dream, and the dream has come to fruition,” executive director Lawrie Mack told the crowd of dignitaries, volunteers and community members who gathered for the celebration.

one is in need, it’s sweet that the Valley comes together to support its neighbours. Gerry Wilkie, Area G director, said “there’s no finer example” of a community with health and integrity than one that takes care of its people.

Clara Reinhardt, Radium’s mayor, told those gathered that it’s important to continue to support the food bank and keep the shelves stocked.

The food bank’s most needed items are cans of: fruit, pasta sauce, brown beans, fish, vegetables, tomatoes and soup. Jars of peanut butter are also in high demand.

In addition to looking for donations, Mr. Mack is also calling for volunteers.

Columbia River Treaty negotiators invite First Nations observers to speak

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Valley residents and elected officials gathered at the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, October 30th for an update on the Columbia River Treaty negotiations.

In the spring, the Ktunaxa, Syilx/ Okanagan and Secwepemc Nations received official observer status in the treaty negotiations.

Bill Green, the appointed observer for Ktunaxa Nation, said his role since he was welcomed to the negotiating table in June has been much more active than the ‘observer’ title implies.

“It was really exciting to have that change, but more exciting since then,” he said. “At first it was ‘oh, you can just be observers and sit in the background’ and then it got to be ‘oh, you guys are presenting.’”

First Nations have now presented on salmon and ecosystem restoration, and he said he is absolutely feeling heard as Ktunaxa’s official observer.

“It’s an amazing collaborative process on the Canadian side for sure,” he said. “It’s very meaningful participation.”

Nathalie Allard, the cultural lead for the Ktunaxa Nation Council, said it was crucial to include First Nations in the negotiations.

“We’re speaking for all of the ones who came before us, those who are here now and all of those that come after us, so ensuring that all of our natural laws and all of our stewardship values and everything are being directly voiced into this process (is important) because we effectively managed all of these new territories and everything since time began,” she said.

At the last treaty meeting for Valley residents in December 2018, participants called for First Nations to be included on the negotiating team and to acknowledge the impact the original Columbia River Treaty had on indigenous communities.

This time, Lyn Ponniah, a senior policy advisor for Global Affairs Canada, beamed in from Ottawa to provide an update and to recognize the First Nations contributions.

“Their presence has enriched our discussion and contributed to crafting strong negotiation positions that reflect a more inclusive perspective, a perspective that was lacking when the treaty was first negotiated in the 1960s,” she said.

Photo by Dauna Ditson As Canada, British Columbia and the United States continue to negotiate, she said they will need to have more conversations around salmon, flood risks and hydro power.

“We hope we can hit some common ground here in the coming weeks and months,” she said. “There is a positive spirit of collaboration.”

Couple found in backcountry after missing for days

By Ashley Wadhwani Black Press The word “HELP” etched in large letters in the snow was what led rescuers to finding a man and woman safe and sound after being stranded for several days in a remote area of the Rocky Mountains last week.

The search for Catherine Gibbons, 22, and Damon Brodeur, 24, began Wednesday, October 30th when Ms. Gibbons’ family reported her missing after not hearing from her for five days. It was believed the two were camping in the backcountry,

police said in a news release.

On Thursday, October 31st as police conducted aerial search with local rescue crews, investigators spotted Ms. Gibbon’s car stuck in an ice-filled creek along Quin Creek Forest Service Road, east of Wasa.

Near the car, investigators could see a bright orange tarp, as well as the word “HELP” stamped into the snow. To the left of the car, a large arrow was also marked into the snow, leading searchers to a cabin where the pair, along with their dog, had taken shelter for days.

Submitted by Sgt. Darren Kakuno Detachment Commander Columbia Valley RCMP This past week, October 28th through November 3rd, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 71 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, October 28th Columbia Valley RCMP received 14 reports of thefts from vehicles, two thefts of vehicles and a theft of a cargo trailer. The thefts occurred in the Invermere and Windermere area. The suspects targeted unlocked vehicles and vehicles with keys left in them. Stolen from Pinetree Place in Invermere was an orange Dodge Journey which was recovered in Radium Hot Springs.

Stolen from Swansea Road in Windermere was a Nissan Titan pickup which was recovered in Canmore, Alberta. Five wallets were among items stolen from the vehicles. Columbia Valley Detachment is working with their Alberta counterparts to investigate reported use of the stolen credit cards in Calgary. Police would like to thank the residents who have turned over video footage which captured a 2012-2015 four door Honda Civic in the vicinity of the thefts. Police are requesting residents review their video footage from Sunday and Monday to determine if they captured any suspicious activities.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP or Crimestoppers.

Residents are reminded of simple measures they can take to prevent thefts: Lock your vehicles. The majority of thefts of or from vehicles are crimes of opportunity. The criminals spend very little time at each vehicle. If your vehicle is locked they will typically carry on to the next vehicle until they find one that is unlocked.

Do not leave valuables in your vehicle. Never leave wallets, passports or electronics in your vehicle. Even loose change can make your vehicle a target; Never leave your vehicle running. As the temperatures drop, drivers are often tempted to leave their vehicles running unattended. This not only makes your vehicle an easy target for criminals but it is also an offence under the Motor Vehicle Act. Do not leave your garage door opener inside your

vehicle. Even if your vehicle is broken into while you’re away from your residence there are typically documents in your vehicle with your home address.

• On Monday, October 28th at 10:20 p.m., police conducted a traffic stop with a Pontiac G6 on Columbia Avenue in Invermere. Upon speaking to the driver, the officer requested breath samples which the driver complied with. The driver provided two breath samples which both resulted in “fails”. As a result, the driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition and the driver’s vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• On Tuesday, October 29th at about 8:15 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a single vehicle collision on Panorama Drive. The driver and lone occupant of a brown Nissan Pathfinder lost control of her vehicle and went off the road and rolled into Toby Creek. The driver was not injured. The driver was served a violation ticket for failing to keep right.

• On Tuesday, October 29th, a resident on Copper Horn Drive in Radium Hot Springs reported a grey 2015 Chevy Trax with BC license plate PN048D was stolen from her residence sometime overnight. The vehicle has not yet been located.

• On Saturday, November 2nd at 11 p.m., the driver of a Dodge Durango came through a police road check that was being conducted in Fairmont Hot Springs. The driver confirmed he had consumed a few drinks prior to driving. A roadside breath test was administered which resulted in two “warns”. As a result, the driver was issued a 3-day Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition.

• On Sunday, November 3rd at 1 a.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop with a grey Pontiac Sunfire near the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce in Invermere. The driver was not able to produce a valid driver’s license or vehicle registration. The driver was discovered to be prohibited from driving. As a result, the driver was arrested for prohibited driving. During the traffic stop the officer also noticed a box full of stripped copper wire in the vehicle. The investigation into the source of the copper wire is ongoing. In addition to the prohibited driving offence, the driver was also issued a violation ticket for driving without insurance and no driver’s license.

Kathy Eichenberger, the executive director for B.C.’s Columbia River Treaty Review Team, summarized the discussions between the countries more bluntly as she responded to audience questions via video conferencing.

“They think they should provide less; we think they should provide more,” she said.

Ms. Eichenberger also shared about how this round of negotiations differs from when the treaty was first put in place.

“In the 1960s the governments didn’t consult or speak to those who would be most affected, didn’t consider social or environmental values, (and) ignored indigenous nations,” she said. “Times have changed, thankfully, but our needs have changed and our values have changed so now is the perfect time to modernize the treaty to reflect all that.”

After facilitating the Columbia Valley community meeting, Brooke McMurchy, a policy advisor for the provincial government, said participants “raised thoughtful and important questions about Canada-US negotiations and Indigenous-led work on ecosystems and salmon reintroduction” and that her team looks forward to returning to Invermere as treaty discussions continue.

“These meetings are always insightful for us and a great opportunity to hear directly from those who live in the Basin,” she said.

A Holocaust survivor’s wish

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com A dozen years ago, I heard a Holocaust survivor speak about his experiences as a prisoner in a concentration camp in the Second World War. Philip Riteman spoke in a crowded room, his voice soft but his words bringing his audience to tears.

After he finished speaking, I thanked him for sharing what he had experienced.

Then he grasped my hand firmly between his and implored me to make him a promise. He wanted me to remember and to pass on his words.

Despite having shared his words with countless others, Mr. Riteman stared into my eyes and spoke with urgency when he begged me to carry on his message that love is better than hate.

Last year Mr. Riteman died in his sleep at 96, but his message lives on in his biography Millions of Souls: The Philip Riteman Story, in his TEDx St. John’s talk and in the memories of those who heard him speak.

Here, as promised, is a glimpse of Mr. Riteman’s story:

Rolling up his sleeve, Philip Riteman, an Auschwitz survivor, showed a permanent reminder of the hell he lived through as a Nazi prisoner.

The number 98,706 has been burned onto his flesh and into his memory.

In a presentation he gave at the University of Regina, Mr. Riteman teared up when speaking of his experiences during the Holocaust. His father, mother, brothers and sisters were all killed during the Holocaust.

Mr. Riteman was just 14 years old when he was herded off to the notorious concentration camp where 125,000 men were kept prisoners. He said he witnessed countless murders and was forced to burn the resulting stacks of bodies.

Mr. Riteman had to watch as men in groups of seven were lined up and shot in front of mass graves.

When their bodies fell into the pits, dirt was thrown in to cover them. Then the next seven men were brought forward to die. And so it continued.

Even Mr. Riteman’s best friend was murdered in front of him. Mr. Riteman told of how Nazis threw his friend into a water trough. The boy was covered in freckles, and the Nazis scrubbed his body with steel wool to remove them.

Mr. Riteman said he heard his friend screaming and dying as his skin was scraped off.

Then Mr. Riteman had to help carry the body to be burned.

Years after being freed, Mr. Riteman is haunted every day by what he lived through.

“I couldn’t believe it was happening, and I still dream about it,” he said.

Struggling to hold back tears, he wondered why he was the one who survived. Although it was hard for him to talk of what he witnessed, Mr. Riteman felt he had a responsibility to share his experiences.

“Maybe I survived to talk to you today,” he said.

Mr. Riteman wants younger generations to remember the atrocities that took place to make sure it never happens again.

“Millions and millions of souls are listening to me speak,” he said in reference to the 6,000,000 Jews who were murdered by the Nazis.

“Teach your children to love,” he said. “I always tell the younger generations to be good to each other.”

Mr. Riteman reminded his audience how fortunate they are to be free.

“You’re all living here in heaven but really you don’t know,” he said.

On October 24th, the B.C. government introduced the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People Act. Wildsight welcomes this legislation which recognizes the role of British Columbia’s Indigenous peoples in all decisions that impact their territories.

This is the first law of its kind in Canada and follows through on government commitments to reconcile BC law with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

Real action to address the climate and biodiversity crises will only be possible by working together with Indigenous communities.

Wildsight will continue to support Indigenous communities in the region in their efforts to put a stop to the loss of wildlife, wildlife habitat and clean water across the region.

The Ktunaxa Nation has demonstrated strong leadership to protect the wildlife and landscape of our region, including the fight to protect Qat’muk, work to protect clean water in the Elk River, and so much more. The legislation of UNDRIP signals a firm commitment by B.C. to recognize First Nations’ rights and will lead to better protection of wildlife, flora, lands and water across the province.

By Arnold Malone Pioneer Columnist The cost of war is frequently offered as a number of dead and wounded.

There are 65 war cemeteries where Canadians soldiers are buried.

The First World War was, by far, Canada’s most deadly. Nearly ten per cent of our population was engaged in that war with a loss of 66,349 lives. At the time Canada’s population was a mere eight million. The Second World War witnessed 70 to 85 million deaths - soldiers and civilians - from 61 countries which represents about 3 per cent of the, then, world population.

Numbers are important. Unfortunately, numbers are data for thoughtful analysis but they do not awaken the heart as to the sacrifice of war. Military cemeteries do that. This recent September, Susan and I visited Europe and spent a week visiting Second World War cemeteries and museums in The Netherlands, Germany, and in Dieppe, France along with a visit to Vimy Ridge, a First World War Monument.

War museums tell an impacting story, but it is the cemeteries that twist your heart. We saw several and spent considerable time in two. The Reichswald Forest War Cemetery in Germany is immaculately maintained. I have a cousin buried there.

The grave field was about two blocks long and ¾ of a block wide. Standing at one end it is difficult to fathom the seemingly endless number of graves in just one of 65 cemeteries. The reality of war comes by walking among the graves.

Most headstones record ages between 18 and 26 years. There were older persons interned but most were at the dawn of adulthood.

We walked row upon row and read the names. It was youth who were protecting our freedom. Some headstones were especially sad such as: “AN AIRMAN OF THE 1939 – 1945 WAR.” Nothing more was inscribed. This would be the remains of a person so destroyed that he could not be identified. Who back home suffered, and how long did hope endure and when did hope give way?

When freedom is gone, money is of little value. No longer are you in control of your destiny.

I don’t know how to put a value on freedom, but a visit to a military cemetery sure lets one know the price we have paid.

During the past election I heard too many times, “Oh what is the use,” and, “What difference does my vote make.”

The difference is that democracy requires engagement. Without involvement, democracy forfeits itself to the abuse of power.

We can easily name the enemies of the 20th century. Some were Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, and Joseph Stalin. Sadly, the enemy is still among us; his name is Apathy.

Near the end of September, while facilitating a discussion with a group of undecided voters, along with other news personalities, a CBC news broadcaster commented that she was uninspired by all national leaders. Worst yet, she chided that she would spoil her ballot by putting an X beside every name.

Those soldiers lying in foreign fields did not die for our disinterest. So, when a national news broadcaster seemingly accepts an act of non-participation as being normal then something is wrong. Our national media ought to be promoting democracy and supporting our institutions, which is one of our pillars of democracy.

From failing hands we have been thrown the torch. It is ours to hold high. If we lose faith then all those young soldiers will not sleep. Because of their sacrifice we must abide our duty.

Spirits of Taynton Bay attempt to slay dragons

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Steve Kuffler and Justin Atterbury can’t wait to see what happens on Dragons’ Den next week. They appeared before the dragons back in May to ask for a deal – $125,000 for a seven per cent share of their locally-brewed company Taynton Bay Spirits – but they haven’t seen their episode or even glimpsed a clip and have no idea how they’ll come across.

“I’m more nervous about the airing than I was about the show,” Mr. Atterbury said, admitting that he and Mr. Kuffler made their share of bad jokes during the taping.

“You’re at the whim of the editors and you hope they’re kind and, if not, you hope you can live it down.”

Even so, his worst-case scenario isn’t coming across poorly on the nationally-broadcast CBC show where entrepreneurs compete to secure business deals with investors. Instead, his fear is about losing out on his chance to tell the country about Taynton Bay Spirits.

“We’ll see how it plays out. We’re hoping for a decent segment, and we hope it’s not a 30-second clip of ‘Justin and Steve from Taynton Bay came in and showcased some alcohol’ and then go onto the next guy,” Mr. Atterbury said. “We’ll be devastated.”

The pair, who are among five Taynton Bay partners, must know if they got a deal, but all they can do is shrug at the question until the episode they are on airs at 9 p.m. on Thursday, November 14th.

Mr. Atterbury and Mr. Kuffler have been watching Dragons’ Den from its first season, long before they came up with an idea they found worthy of the show.

When they saw an ad inviting entrepreneurs to audition, they only had four days to prepare. With up to 6,000 applicants auditioning across the country for 120 spots of airtime, they only had a two per cent chance of making it through to meet the dragons.

The audition room was awkward at first, Mr. Atterbury said, but then he offered some “liquid courage” to the other presenters.

“As soon as we started pouring drinks, the tension just got cut with a knife and then everyone just kind of relaxed a bit,” he said.

“We changed the game that morning,” Mr. Kuffler added.

While they felt fairly confident about their audition, they didn’t know what to expect.

“They weren’t there to critique whether your idea was good or bad. They were there to see, in their words, if you’re TV-worthy,” Mr. Atterbury said.

And being TV-worthy doesn’t necessarily mean being amazing, Mr. Kuffler said.

“Some of the goofiest ideas that are out there, they put them on there because of the entertainment portion of the program,” he said.

The pair were invited to head to Toronto in May to pitch Taynton Bay Spirits to the dragons in search of marketing support and a strategic partner to help them grow.

“I was at the top of the stairs looking down at the stage, and then there were all six of them sitting there with bright lights and glittery. That’s when I went ‘wow.’ I could have pinched myself at that point,” Mr. Kuffler said.

“We just said ‘let’s do it’ and we kicked that door open and

Right from the start things didn’t go as planned. They had been told to introduce themselves, say where they were from and get drinks into the dragons’ hands within 60 seconds. But they were thwarted almost immediately by the dragons who wanted to chat about Invermere. All but one of them were familiar with the area.

Mr. Atterbury and Mr. Kuffler wouldn’t say much about the rest of their pitch, but they said the conversation flowed naturally.

“Although you’ve never met these people before, you’ve seen them interact so many times you actually felt like you knew them,” Mr. Atterbury said. “This just felt like it was our Superbowl and we were ready to play.”

Then he paused, worrying again about how the recording will turn out.

“We might look way dumber than we thought that we were. We’re good at tweaking history to form a positive narrative,” he said, breaking into a hearty round of laughter with Mr. Kuffler.

Despite all their laughter now, it hasn’t always been giggles for Taynton Bay Spirits.

“We had a lot of hard knocks early on,” Mr. Atterbury said, adding that he and Mr. Kuffler were literally thrown out of liquor stores when the two-and-a-half-yearold company started up. “We faced so much rejection together.”

Even so, Mr. Kuffler said: “We kept our heads high and kept on punching.”

Mallory’s motivation reaches new horizons

By Breanne Massey Special to the Pioneer After successfully completing a self-guided expedition on Mount Everest and setting a world record with four members of his family, an international speaker, author and performance coach will make a cameo in Invermere.

The District of Invermere (DOI) has invited Alan Mallory to present his life’s lessons from Reaching New Heights to the Columbia Valley community at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 8th at the Columbia Valley Centre.

“The District of Invermere is bringing Alan Mallory in on Friday, November 8th to run a leadership workshop for the District staff during the day,” Cortney Pitts, DOI event coordinator, wrote the Pioneer by email. “Alan will be running a presentation for the community the same night at the Columbia Valley Centre starting at 7 p.m. The evening presentation will be open for anyone to attend.”

Mr. Mallory and his family embarked on their self-guided expedition of Everest in the spring of 2018 and successfully completed their activity within two months of departing.

“They encountered immense challenges during the climb but they were able to overcome these obstacles through healthy team dynamics, effective communication and trust in each other’s abilities,” Ms. Pitts added by email. “It was a two-month journey through some of the most terrifying and arduous conditions imaginable but to finally reach their end goal was incredible!”

Mr. Mallory has a Bachelor’s degree in engineering from Queen’s University, as well as a Masters in psychology from Adler University. His work experience as an engineer and project manager both in Canada and abroad have given him a unique perspective to solving problems in a team dynamic. He thrives when given the opportunity to help others reach new heights and maximize their full potential from a personal and professional perspective, according to his website information.

In addition, Mr. Mallory published a book, The Family That Conquered Everest, to inform others about his family’s triumph and mountaineering journey.

Don’t miss: Cinefest Submitted Dhunu (Banita Das) wants a rock band. It’s an admirable goal for a young girl but out of reach when you live in a remote village in India. And when your mother is a widow struggling to put food on the table, dreams of electric guitars can seem like madness. Yet a guitar is exactly what drives Dhunu’s ambition. At 10-years-old she is alive with a passion for music and confident in her convictions.

Village Rockstars was India’s nominee for Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards and paints an inspiring portrait of a young girl finding her place in a world made for boys and men. Das grew up in the same village where she shot her film and recruited a local, non-professional cast. This may also have seemed daring but the result is magic. The performances are natural and fresh, the marshlands and village textures are palpable in Das’s intimate camerawork.

Tulips to remember

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Some big lessons were learned from a tiny tulip bulb this year at Windermere Elementary School.

Kendra Day’s grade 1/2 class and Christa Stimming’s grade 2/3 class partnered up to learn how tulips saved Dutch people from starvation during the Second World War. The hands-on history lesson presented the story of how Dutch residents dug up tulip bulbs during the winter of 1944-1945 to eat as German forces had taken the country’s food supplies, causing many to suffer and die.

But tulip bulbs provided a source of nutrition and staved off starvation for some.

“They were super hungry. That’s why the ate-ed (sic) all the tulip bulbs,” said Kayla.

The students discussed how the Dutch might have felt during the war.

“I think they were sad,” Ethan said. “I think they were sad and desperate. And I think they thought that there’s no hope, that they just might give up and die.’

They took guesses at how the tulips might taste. Students estimated that, given the way the bulbs look, they might taste a little like garlic or perhaps onion. A Dutch cookbook from around the Second World War actually suggests they taste a little like potatoes, and are best eaten if boiled for about 30 minutes and put into a soup.

“I feel disappointed they didn’t have the food they were used to. I know they had to eat it, but I don’t think it would taste very good,” said Noah.

The students learned about Canada’s role in helping the Dutch. More than 7,600 Canadians died while trying to help free the Netherlands. The Royal Canadian Air Force also air-dropped food to provide some relief to the starving Dutch population. Back in Canada, some members of the Dutch royal family were sheltered while the war raged on; a Dutch princess was even born in an Ottawa hospital room that was quickly made into a territory of the Netherlands so she could be born on Dutch soil.

Jackson said he felt proud of what our country did to help during the Second World War. The Dutch people never forgot our role, and have

been thanking Canada with flowers ever since. In 1945, the Dutch royal family gave Canada 100,000 tulip bulbs.

They have sent bulbs ever since and this year, nearly 75 years since liberation, the country again sent 100,000 tulip bulbs.

“Canada fought for them, so they give us tulips,” said Colin.

The students talked about how the Germans were like bullies, and how the Canadians stood up to the bullies.

“We’re learning about the Dutch people and remembering them by planting tulips. And remembering when the soldiers took all their food.

And they only had to eat bulbs from tulips.

They were desperate,” said Savannah.

The teachers added a practical component to the lessons too, getting students to study the bulbs, talk about what tulips need to grow, Ms. Stimming’s class created tulip art alongside their history lessons, such as these images by Anna and planting a batch (above left) and James (above right). When asked why it is important to recognize and remember at Remembrance Day each year, Ava Grace said, “Because we’re remembering the soldiers who fought for us.”

And James said we remember “to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Ms. Stimming elaborated on James’ comment: “We talked a lot about that. One day you guys will be our leaders and you guys will be in charge of our country.

And if we learn about our past, we make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Invermere piper to play at Vimy Ridge in 2020

The Last Post. Two minutes of silence. Then the Lament. The order is always the same, replayed in Remembrance Day ceremonies across Canada every November 11th.

For the past 11 years, Pieter Jansen has gladly filled the role of official bagpiper for the Invermere service, the service at David Thompson Secondary School, and sometimes standing in at the Edgewater service too. He breaks the silence at exactly 11:02 a.m. with a haunting rendition of the Lament on his bagpipes.

“It’s important to honour the sacrifice given,” he says. “It’s the right thing to do.”

In 2018, Mr. Jansen added another duty to his day’s events, joining pipers across Canada who paid tribute to the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice (which ended the fighting between Allies and Germany in the First World War) by playing When the Battle is Over at the Invermere cenotaph at 6 a.m..

And this spring 2020, Mr. Jansen is heading to Holland and France with an 80-person pipe and drum band, gathered together from across B.C. The band will be playing at parades and concerts in the park in Holland.

In France, they will be performing at Vimy Ridge, the site of Canada’s most celebrated military victory from the First World War and the place where more than 10,600 Canadians were killed or wounded. Vimy Ridge has long been touted as a defining moment for Canada as a separate entity from the mother country Britain.

“It’s on my bucket list,” says Mr. Jansen. “Every Canadian should try to get to Vimy Ridge, if possible.”

In 2020, it will also be 75 years since the Dutch were liberated from the Germans during the Second World War. Following the war, the Dutch parliament declared that May 5 would be known as Liberation Day. Every five years from then on, they have a big celebration. Mr. Jansen’s pipe group will be in Holland during the celebrations.

The trip was first proposed by members of the Kelowna Pipe Band, who easily attracted a large contingent of B.C. pipers and drummers to join in this historic trip.

Mr. Jansen was born in Holland, moving to Canada when he was a young child. He even has relatives still back in Holland he hopes to connect with while on the trip.

When he was nine, Mr. Jansen saw a boat of army cadets with a piper playing onboard. He decided then and there he wanted to learn the pipes, beginning when he was 10.

“I knew some people in the Cadet corps. I started hanging around with them. Then eventually just worked my way into playing bagpipe before I was old enough to even join the Cadet corp. So when I did join the Cadet corps, they didn’t have to train me. I was already a piper,” he explains.

Mr. Jansen likes to practice his booming bagpipes through the warm summer months on a bluff near where a friend died a long time ago.

“Nobody can bother me, and I don’t bother anybody there,” he says. “People come by, they stop and listen, then just keep going.”

To serve and survey Invermere veteran John Stieger was part of a little-known division that acted like a ‘human GPS’ during the Second World War

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The very best French fries John Stieger has ever eaten were in a German bunker in the middle of the Second John Stieger World War. His regiment had entered the bunker in Walcheren Island, the Netherlands. The Germans, who were known to poison food left behind, had just abandoned the space, leaving ammunition, other supplies, and a large vat of fish oil. A chemist in their troop tested the oil and confirmed it was safe to eat. Seventy-five years later, he still smiles when he thinks of those fries.

Mr. Stieger’s father Johan was Austrian; his mother Marie was German. They met and married in Montreal in 1918. Mr. Stieger’s older sister was born in July 1920 in Montreal. After the First World War, a promoter in Quebec talked his parents into moving to Germany since inflation made the Canadian dollar stretch farther there.

They sold their home and bought a farm near Hamburg.

“In the meantime, the money disappeared,” Mr. Stieger said. “Deflation. They lost everything.”

Mr. Stieger was born on August 19, 1922, while the family was living in Germany.

“My mother couldn’t even buy food for me. She had to sell utensils and that to get milk,” he was told.

With help from his father’s brother still in Montreal, the family headed back to Canada when Mr. Stieger was very young. Luck turned in their favour when they met a man on the ship who was looking for employees for the Canadian Bronze Company. His father and uncle were both hired and the family moved to Valleyfield, Quebec.

Mr. Stieger grew up playing with the French kids, so he spoke German (his language at home) and French before he ever spoke English. He attended an English-speaking school, then went on to a boarding school in the eastern townships of Quebec to finish high school. Mr. Stieger did well in senior mathematics, excelling in courses such as trigonometry and geometry. He also earned a spot as captain of both the football team and track and field.

Memories of the First World War were fresh in Canada’s mind and, as high school graduation neared, Mr. Stieger dreamed of becoming the next Canadian

hero fighter pilot. He and a group of friends drove to the nearby air force base to sign up. A month before graduation, Mr. Stieger found out he had been refused from entry into the air force; he realized much later it was likely on account of his birth place.

Three of Mr. Stieger’s friends who were accepted into the air force were killed within their first three months of training.

After graduation, Mr. Stieger went to northern Quebec to work in an aluminum plant. A co-worker he roomed with got killed in a tragic accident, and Mr. Stieger had to pack up the man’s belongings to send home. He quit the job and signed up for the army on August 18, 1942 (the day before he turned 20). While the air force might not have wanted a German-born Canadian, Mr. Stieger was sought after by the army. Thanks to his mathematics skills, specifically trigonometry, he was funnelled into a new regiment – one of only two regiments in the entire Canadian army, called the Second Royal Canadian Artillery Survey Division.

“I had the ‘matric’ [mathematics], and they needed me,” Mr. Stieger explained, noting most of his division was made up of schoolteachers.

The survey division helped the Allies learn where the enemies were shooting from and where to best place their own weaponry. Through flash spotting (studying from a high viewpoint – often a church steeple - where the gun flashes came from), sound ranging (pinpointing enemy fire through sound) and straight surveying, Mr. Stieger’s regiment helped the troops make best use of their firepower by placing it in the most strategic spots, while helping them stay out of harm’s way of enemy lines. His son Jay describes his dad’s role as being like a human GPS. “We were wired up in those days to get the information back to our own guns. That’s why we worked with all the guns in the Canadian army and the British Army,” Mr. Stieger described.

They would also have an observer right on the front lines with the foot soldiers, taking turns in that position.

Mr. Stieger says, simply, that being on the front lines was scary.

Their tools were survey books, huge specially-made typewriters, and the power of trigonometry. However, Mr. Stieger was close enough to the front line danger, he carried a Sten gun through his service. Mr. Stieger took the man’s revolver (which took the same ammunition as his gun), and carried it illegally through the war.

The survey crew was often placed into No Man’s Land, directly between the two sides. He shares one particular scene from Nijmegen, in the Netherlands. Between Allied-occupied Nijmegen and Axis-occupied Arnhem, was the Rhine River, and in that No Man’s Land space was an island where the survey crew had to go.

“One day, they (the Germans) fired an 88 gun, which was their big one. And it hit my truck directly,” Mr. Stieger said. “One of my men was killed outright.”

The driver got part of his leg shot away, four men in the back were injured, and Mr. Stieger got shrapnel on his face and along the left side of his body. He was fixed up at the field dressing station and was back to the job within three days.

That was not the only time Mr. Stieger survived a dangerous encounter. His corps was assaulted on two separate occasions from overhead bombing – both times from Allied forces unaware that friends, not foes, were below them. The first was a 500-strong plane attack, and three of Mr. Stieger’s crew mates were killed. After that, they needed to scrounge from other regiments for food, surviving on corned beef and hard tack for six weeks, he remembered. A few days after the first bombing, another friendly fire occurred.

“We could see the planes – they were about 1,000 feet up – and it lasted for over two hours,” Mr. Stieger recalled. He had been taking a shower at the time the attack started, and ran in nothing but a towel to hide it out with other soldiers in a nearby bunker.

Everywhere they went, there were signs of war.

“Houses shattered. And you found soldiers everywhere.”

There are good memories from the war too though, mixed in with the bad. He received care packages from his mother and aunt, which included cigarettes, toilet paper, toothpaste, even white asparagus – “my favourite.”

When in Nijmegen, they were billeted in a castle.

They used green wood on the grounds to heat the castle, and the smoke got to a few of the soldiers, including Mr. Stieger, who chose to sleep in the barn instead. He became friends with the caretaker, and would share some of his care package items with the man and his family, like chocolate for his children. In return, the caretaker would share when the castle owner gave him some cow or pig meat.

“When we were surveying in No Man’s land, we found the furniture of a railroad station operator,” Mr. Stieger said. “It was a chesterfield, and good furniture.

We put it in a truck and brought it to his house (of the caretaker). We weren’t allowed to do it, but we did it!”

He got a week’s leave at one point, and went to Paris. It was required that the leave be educational, so he learned some French history in the mornings. But in the afternoons, he got to tour the sites.

What was Paris like during the war?

“Full of American soldiers,” he described.

He remembers the end of the war clearly. It was May 4th – his mother’s birthday.

“We were in a field next to a battalion of tanks. It was 9:00 at night. They had a radio. It said ‘attention, this is Marshall Montgomery. Cease fire tomorrow the 5th at 0800 Hours.”

While his regiment drank in celebration, Mr. Stieger and his captain stayed on guard, just in case.

He travelled back to Canada with a troop out of Montreal. He had signed up to be sent to Japan, but figured the war might be over there too by the time he travelled home, had his month’s leave then sent to his next assignment. He was right. Mr. Stieger came home, where he was welcomed back by his parents, sister and friends.

They cried when they finally saw each other again, after more than three years away.

Following the war, Mr. Stieger went to McGill University, then to work for IBM in Toronto, where he remained for his career. He got married, had a son, and retired in 1983. He now calls Invermere home after his Continued on page 18 . . .

Mr. Stieger isn’t one to elaborate when asked what it was like to know that, while he fought with the Canadian side, his Austrian relatives were likely on the other side of No Man’s Land from him. Years later, he learned the story of one Austrian cousin who had been an officer of an S.S. youth unit. That cousin could see that the war would be ending soon, and that it would not be in the Germans’ favour. He told his troop they should surrender, and was shot in the back by his own men. Another cousin was taken as a Prisoner of War, and sent to a camp in Colorado, though he later told family he never had it so good as when he was in the POW camp, with cigarettes and whiskey on a farm in the States.

Up until a couple years ago, Mr. Stieger went to Europe every year, where he and an Austrian cousin would travel to a different country each trip to see the sights. He tells the Pioneer he never went out of his way to visit any John Stieger pays his respects to long-lost friends during the of the many locations he was stationed in during the war.

By Jerry Meadows, Chair Poppy and Remembrance Committee Royal Canadian Legion Br. 71, Windermere District This year marks a number of anniversaries: 120 years ago saw the start of the Second Boer War, where 7,000 Canadians served with 267 being killed. We know two veterans from this Valley served: Percy Docking and Frederick Young. One hundred and five years ago saw the first great battle of the First World War take place at Ypres, Belgium. And 75 years ago saw D-Day, where 14,500 Canadians landed at Juno Beach. One of our Valley’s own, Jack Docking, among them. Sadly Jack was killed five days later. 1944 also saw three Canadians receive the Victoria Cross – the highest award for military valour. All three were from Western Canada: Pilot Officer Andrew Mynarski of Manitoba, Major David Currie of Saskatchewan, and Sergeant Ernest “Smokey” Smith of British Columbia.

On April 4th, 1949, 70 years ago, the western nations decided to form a military alliance and NATO was formed. Canada was one of the 12 founding members.

Today NATO has 29 member nations and Canada is still a key contributor. In 1989, 30 years ago, we saw the collapse of the Berlin Wall. With that, NATO would continue to prove its relevance with security missions in the Balkans, Afghanistan, Libya, Poland, Latvia, Romania and the Black Sea.

The United Nations Peacekeeping efforts in Cyprus began in 1964, with Canadian Forces playing a key role.

More than 25,000 Canadian Service personnel have deployed to Cyprus over the years with a loss of 28 lives.

National Peacekeepers Day is observed in Canada on August 9th because 45 years ago, on August 9th, 1974, nine Canadian peacekeepers were killed in the Middle East when their transport plane was shot down while helping to establish a new United Nations mission in the Golan Heights of Syria. Despite this tragic beginning, more than 12,000 Canadian Forces personnel have seen service in the Golan Heights.

From 2001 to 2014, Afghanistan was Canada’s best known recent military effort. During that time more than 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces members served, with a loss of life of 158. Afghanistan was Canada’s largest deployment of troops since the Second World War. 2020 will mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe. With the end of the Second World War and the liberation of Holland, many events are planned, from planting tulips to candlelight ceremonies in May. Like the War To End All Wars, the Second World War did not end conflict. We continue to see our military involved in action throughout the world. We pray for their safety and for peace. But we must not forget the sacrifices made by those of the past.

Lake Windermere OCP adopted

Submitted by RDEK The RDEK Board has adopted the Lake Windermere Official Community Plan (OCP).

“This has been an extensive process that spans over two years,” says RDEK Electoral Area F Director Susan Clovechok. “One of our goals was to create a document that will guide development for the next five to ten years while balancing diverse community interests and I believe we have done that with this plan.”

There were numerous community meetings and open houses throughout the process and Ms. Clovechok says they’ve worked closely with a community based advisory committee from early on.

“I want to thank the members of the advisory committee who have been dedicated and engaged since our first meeting. They, and all the members of the public who participated in some way, have played a key role in the development of this plan, which I believe is a significant improvement over the previous OCP.” Following an open house in June where the draft plan was presented, several updates were made in response to the feedback received. Some examples of the policies that have been included include:

New fire trucks on the way The Regional District of East Kootenay approved buying three new fire trucks to spread out across the Valley.

The Edgewater Fire Department will get a fire engine, while Windermere and Fairmont will each get a water tanker truck that can carry water to areas that do not have hydrants.

Jim Miller, chief of Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Services, said these trucks can be filled at nearby hydrants or from creeks or lakes.

In response to concerns about the visual impact of storage-based businesses, the OCP contains policies that support storage based businesses to be located outside of the highway 93/95 corridor, away from Athalmer Road and the Windermere townsite. In addition to this, landscaping and screening development permit area guidelines have been strengthened.

Eleven parcels north of Windermere Creek that were supported for exclusion from the Agricultural Land Reserve in the 2008 plan are now identified as properties that should stay within the ALR due to their high agricultural potential.

Policy supporting a trail system that connects the Markin-MacPhail Westside Legacy Trail, Old Coach Greenway, Windermere Beach Park, Crossroads Regional Ball Park and communities on the east side of Lake Windermere with other amenities and services.

Although highways are outside of the RDEKs jurisdiction, the public raised concerns regarding traffic safety at several entrances to Windermere, the need for traffic calming and improved pedestrian safety near school bus stops. In response to these concerns, the OCP includes policy that advocates for highway improvements.

Canal Flats council briefs

By Dean Midyette Special to the Pioneer The regular meeting of the Canal Flats council on October 28th began with a quarterly report from RCMP Staff Sergeant Darren Kakuno who reported that the detachment is now fully staffed. Calls for service during the summer quarter were up slightly from 2018 with Canal Flats accounting for 4 per cent of all calls for service in the area. There was, however, a decrease in property crime during this period due to proactive initiatives undertaken by the detachment. Sgt. Kakuno also reported on a crime spree on Monday October 28th in Windermere and Invermere which included thefts from vehicles and two vehicle thefts as a result of the cars being left open with keys in them.

Sgt. Kakuno informed council of the WITS program (Walk away, Ignore, Talk it out, Seek help) that was introduced into two area elementary schools to combat youth crime and bullying.

Council received a number of reports as well as 2020 schedules and work plans from staff, which included a 2019 visitor summary from Tilley Memorial Park which welcomed more than 7,500 visitors this summer.

The village will be applying for a number of grants including a $25,000 UBCM Community Emergency Preparedness grant and an application for $1 million from the UBCM Community Child Care Space Creation Program to create a local daycare. There will be a second phase to this grant which will provide a maximum of $3 million for child care spaces which will be available at a later date.

Finally, bylaw approvals included third reading of Zoning Bylaw 215 - Amendment Bylaw No 222, adoption of the Fees and Charges bylaw for 2020, third reading of the 2019 - 2023 Financial Plan Amendment Bylaw No 226 and third reading of the Floodplain Management Amendment Bylaw 227. All bylaws can be viewed on the Village of Canal Flats website at www.canalflats.ca.

No canvas? No problem

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com When Adrienne McCarthy went to spend a month at the lake, she packed her paints and brushes but forgot her canvases.

“I had all the paint but nothing to paint on so I started painting on boards and I really liked it,” she said.

She enjoyed painting animals on reclaimed wood so much that she kept going until she had too many to keep, and so Riverboard Creations was born.

Last year Ms. McCarthy went to her first market, and this weekend you can find her at Windermere’s Handmade Market. Her work is also available at Treasures in the Wind.

“I go into these markets thinking: ‘if I sell one I’ll be happy,’” she said, adding that hitting up the markets is rewarding both in terms of sales and the big smiles people send her way when they check out

her whimsical animals.

Most of her canvases come from the water, she said, but she also uses barn wood for her designs.

The fifth annual Handmade Market is taking place in the Windermere Community Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 9th. There is no cost for admission.

Products from over 20 vendors at the market will include fine art, pottery, knitting, quilting, sewing, baking, local honey and produce, handmade soap, doll clothes, preserves and jam, jewelry, wood carving, and beeswax wraps.

Soup, sandwiches, beverages and goodies will also be available.

This year the Handmade Market will make a donation to the Creston and District for Community Living Therapeutic Riding Program. Bird houses will also be for sale to raise money to support the program.

The show at the Columbia Valley Centre on Friday, November 1st, delivered all that and more, collecting two standing ovations from the sold-out crowd.

Radium’s wizard settles into new lair with cancer in remission

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Rolf Heer relaxes on a plush sofa in a sunbeam that gleams through the window in the Columbia Garden Village suite where he now lives and where he intends to spend the remainder of his days.

Today, in this moment, as he sips apple cider and vodka from a red Solo cup, he’s happy.

“I love it here. It’s just great. The people are great, the staff are great and all the people living here are so nice.

You know, I never lived in a place that nice,” he says. “The food is excellent, everything. I mean you couldn’t have it any better.”

But how the 65-year-old wizard feels changes by the day as do his thoughts on medically-assisted dying.

While Mr. Heer wouldn’t choose to die at this particular moment as he basks in the sunbeam, he says: “Maybe not right now, but who knows? Maybe in a week I’m feeling different again. When I get sick, I want to be dead.”

Despite obtaining approval for a medically-assisted death from one of his doctors, Mr. Heer hasn’t gotten the second signature he would need to be able to proceed.

Death has to be “reasonably foreseeable” for patients to be allowed to choose their ending dates, and his cancer is in remission.

“The doctor said to me: ‘I won’t give you the medical-assistance death; I’ll make you healthy again,’” Mr. Heer says. “He did make me healthy in some way. I’m

feeling fairly good right now, and I hope I can live like this for another few more years.”

One year ago, Mr. Heer’s Home of a Thousand Faces burned to the ground in Radium. Mr. Heer was dragged out but only managed to save a few of his belongings, including his prized wizard hats, before his iconic home and business turned to ash.

Mr. Heer says the fire remains the saddest day of his life, sadder than when he was diagnosed with prostate and bone cancer.

But he’s not worried about fires now that he’s living at Columbia Garden Village.

“This is not going to happen to me again. I’m living in a safe environment here. They had fire practice here today,” he says, laughing.

Since his home burned down, Mr. Heer had been staying with friends or living in a trailer on his fire-ravaged property or overnighting in the hospital. When he moved into his suite, he was so relieved to have a place of his own – and such a lovely one – that he says he cried for the first few days.

“I totally appreciate that they took me here,” he says.

“I’m fine right now. I love it here and I’m set for the rest of my life here.”

Even so, he wishes he was approved for a medically-assisted death so he could decide for himself when he’s had enough.

“When you get really, really sick, you can’t go anywhere, everything hurts and what do you want? You just

While he isn’t able to return to his woodcarving work, he says entertaining his many guests keeps him busy.

“I’ll just live my life here. Enjoy life like everybody else, watch television all day long and hang out,” he says.

New restaurant fired up about smoked menu

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Meat is on the menu at Smokehouse 93. Pulled pork. Sliced beef brisket. Chicken or turkey. Pork sausage, even candied bacon can be found at the Columbia Valley’s first slow smoked barbecue restaurant. Get it with coleslaw, jalapeño cheddar cornbread, smoked potato dill salad or smoker cheddar mac and cheese. Sides are as sumptuous as they sound, with fresh, homemade spice blends and sauces.

Hungry yet? If reading the menu isn’t enough to entice you to drive over to Smokehouse 93, the smells when you enter the building located near the Crossroads will be enough to make your stomach growl. The restaurant opened September 18th, with a full offering of southern-style cooking. Some of the menu items are a musthave at a barbecue joint, co-owners Steve Holliday and Brad Thompson assert.

“As far as I’m concerned, if you’re a barbecue place, you have to have mac and cheese, you have to have cornbread. You have to have the ‘slaw. The beans obviously, that’s a big thing. We knew what we needed to have on the menu,” says Mr. Holliday.

But what shines on the menu is the meat, smoked for anywhere from 12 to 18 hours in one of the restaurant’s six smokers out back. The secret to the smoking, expert Mr. Thompson says, is in the wood choice.

“We do a mix of oak, cherry, hickory. So you get a little bit of the sweet, a little bit of the robust flavour from the hickory. And it brings a nice mahogany tone on the meat without overwhelming it,” Mr. Thompson says.

Even the beans are not canned. And all the meat is above-grade Canadian cuts.

The reaction from customers has been phenomenal so far.

“I’m super excited about the support we’re getting, just from the local community itself,” says Mr. Holliday. “It’s kind of overwhelming the amount of positive feedback we’ve been getting . . . We’ve had several people from the southern States where barbecue is huge tell us it’s some of the best they’ve ever had. That’s a pretty big benchmark for us.”

The men first connected through Instagram. Mr. Holliday noticed that Mr. Thompson, who had recently moved to the Valley, was posting about his pastime of meat smoking. Mr. Holliday, who has a “strong passion for food” and a culinary background, reached out to ask about learning the fine art of smoking meat. The pair started hanging out and got along well. Originally, the plan was for them to travel the barbecue competition circuit together this year. Mr. Holliday and Mr. Thompson had both been working in completely different industries. But when they realized their combined talents made for one fantastic restaurant menu, they decided to take the leap, quit their other jobs, and follow their dreams. Mr. Holliday in particular had actually done chef training, but ended up working in carpentry for years.

“This is something I wanted to get back into, it’s what I’m meant to be doing,” he reflects.

For Mr. Thompson, the route to Smokehouse 93 began when his mom bought him an electric smoker about 15 years ago. He started backyard smoking and ended up competing in multiple barbecue smoking competitions. With the help of a welding friend, he even made a custom offset smoker that’s on display out front of the restaurant now.

The co-owners want people to know that you can stay at Smokehouse 93 to eat, or you can be in and out in five minutes on a rushed lunchtime.

“That was our big aha moment. We saw the need for fresh-cooked food, but that you can get immediately,” Mr. Holliday says.

The men have collaborated with other areas businesses for their offerings. For example, their maple ale bacon beans use Arrowhead stout and Stolen Church coffee beans. And they hope that is only the beginning of cross-company connections. Mr. Holliday explains that not only is he good friends with a lot of area business owners,

“If you’re trying to be a community-oriented business, you have to have that level of support, from business to business,” he explains.

Not content to rest on their early restaurant success, the pair are working towards selling Smokehouse 93-branded sauces, spice blends, beef jerky, even trail mix soon.

Once their liquor license is in order, the restaurant will offer Arrowhead brews on-site too.

Smokehouse 93 is also available for event / wedding catering, and have been at several area events already including one at Arrowhead, and offering samplers at the Hospice Society’s fashion night recently.

Smokehouse 93 is located on Hwy 93, just past the lights to turn into Invermere.

Verhelst, Wilma Mary (nee Romanzin) May 24, 1934 – October 22, 2019

It is with profound sadness that we announce that passing of our dear mother, Wilma Mary Verhelst. She left us peacefully in her sleep at the Suncreek Village nursing Home in Surrey, B.C., where she spent her last 4 years closer to family.

She was Born and schooled in mining town of Nordegg, Alberta but moved to Red Deer, Alberta when she began work, primarily in banking. Here she would meet her husband Leo and have 5 children. Together they had a successful construction company, mom using her banking skills to do the companies books. After the children moved on to their own lives, they decided to change their location to the beautiful Columbia valley in B.C. Wilma and her husband Leo spent some of their happiest years in retirement in the village of Radium Hot Springs where they meet a community and made many friends. Although some distance from most family, her son, daughters, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and siblings would always find a way to drop in and visit. They would always be welcomed with open arms, a big smile, wholesome food and board games. Her home was a place of acceptance, love and peace to family, friends and even strangers.

After the passing of her son James and husband Leo she moved to Surrey to the care of family in her twilight years.

Wilma is survived by her children Daniel (Maritza) of Surrey, B.C., daughter Linda (Rob) of Prince George B.C., daughter Laura of Calgary, AB, grandchildren Ricardo, Dillon and Myles, and great-grandchildren Rianna and Zackary. She is predeceased by her daughter Tina, son James, and husband Leo. An intimate ceremony will be held at the interment site at the Radium Hot Springs Columbarium, 7524 Stations Drive, Radium Hot Springs, November 9, 2019 at 1 pm.

We love you mom, Danny, Linnie and Putzy.

The gift of peace

By Pastor Murray Wittke Valley Christian Assembly For me war has always been “Once upon a time in a land far far away…” All I’ve ever known is peace.

Unlike many others in our war-torn world, I’ve never lived in fear; never heard machine-gun fire or ran from a bomb blast; never walked by burned out homes or dead bodies in the street; never had to hide in the dark, steal food, or flee for my life. I’ve never had brutal paramilitary kick down my door, ransack my home, or threaten me because of my nationality or religion. For me those things only happen somewhere faraway, on the news, or in movies.

For 62 years I’ve been privileged to live in a country that enjoys the rare and unique gift of peace. I lead a quiet life. I sleep well at night. There are no bars on my

windows and my front door is seldom locked. I feel safe everywhere I go because I live amongst a peaceful people that cherish the gift they’ve been given. Unlike other gifts, the gift of peace comes at an incredible price. Once upon a time young men and women went to a faraway land and gave their lives to purchase our peace. They sent it home, never experiencing it themselves. Today young Canadians still guard our peace by entering the world’s war zones and attempting to make peace. Some never come home, and many that do carry war wounds that make peace for them impossible. Peace is costly yet day and night those we don’t even know continue paying the price.

So how do I respond to such an expensive gift? Wearing a poppy and showing respect on Remembrance Day is a good start. Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers...”

It’s unlikely I’ll ever have to fight for peace carrying an assault rifle but I can be an instrument of God’s peace; where there’s hatred sowing love, where there’s injury, forgiveness, and where there’s despair, hope. I begin by extending my hand to all of you… “The peace of Christ be with you!” Pass it on.

The Columbia Valley Rockies volunteered their time on Halloween to walk with trick-ortreaters. Not only did they provide an extra set of eyes on a busy night, but they made for a memorable evening for local kids too. Thanks Rockies!

Rockies rock the weekend

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Columbia Valley Rockies played two back-to-back away games last weekend, with a close game Friday, and a resounding victory Saturday.

Friday, November 1st, the Rockies met the Spokane Braves. The Braves came in strong with two goals. But with only 1:31 left on the clock in first period, Rockies’ Nikolas Scheiwiller, with assists from Jonathan Milligan and Gareth Nicholas, answered back. Braves dropped another in the net, ending an exciting first period.

Second period saw Rockies’ Nikolas Scheiwiller (assisted by Colby Phillips and Caileb Berge) put the only score on the board. Then in the third period, Rockies’ Khale Skinner, with assists from Brennan Nelson and Gareth Nicholas, tied up the

scoreboard with 8:11 left on the clock.

The Rockies aimed to tip the score in their favour, but Braves got the final goal of the night in overtime, finishing the game 4-3 for Spokane.

Saturday, November 2nd, the Rockies trailed in first and second period, with the Creston Valley Thunder Cats sitting at 1-0. In the third period, the switch turned and the Rockies ramped up their game, dropping five goals to answer the Cats’ one. Caileb Berge and Nikolas Scheiwiller both netted two, and Khale Skinner added one to the total, bringing the final score to a proud 5-1 for the Rockies.

This Friday, November 8th and Saturday, November 9th, come cheer on the Rockies at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena as they take on the Fernie Ghostriders and the Summerland Steam. Games start at 7:30 p.m.

The Novice team received their names on the back of their Jerseys for the first time. It was an exciting for the team!

rie and lost 4-1, ending their tiering. The Bantam Zone team won 6-4 and lost a close one to the OMAHA (Okanagan Zone) on the week-end.

All other teams had an extra practice as the Managers were all involved in the League Scheduling and League games will begin in the next week.

Referee recognition Corey Olsen was recognized for refereeing over 300 games in the past 4 years, plus the Tier 2 Midget Bronze Medal game in 2019, prior to the start of the Rockies’ home game on Friday, October 25th. Mr. Olsen has also donated whistles and shirts to the referees program.
