Incoming MP looks ahead to this term

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Three days after the dust settled, the Kootenay-Columbia’s new Member of Parliament was already prepared to jump into his new job.

Speaking from Ottawa Thursday morning, Mr. Morrison said he is in the capital now to do an orientation and sign some documents. But he also has an issue he wants to raise with Canada Post on behalf of constituents in the small community of Grassmere (south of Elko).

“I might as well get to work,” he remarked.

This year’s federal election results saw Mr. Morrison sweep the Kootenay-Columbia with 7,186 more votes than the NDP’s Wayne Stetski (according to preliminary results). The tally was a surprise to Mr. Morrison as much as anybody, he said. By comparison, in 2015 Mr. Stetski’s position was earned by a narrow 282-vote margin.

“We always came in as the underdogs. It’s hard with the incumbent who has a lot of press time and has been around and has already built up relationships,” Mr. Morrison said. “We knew it would be an uphill battle. The days leading up the election, we were behind in the polls. It was pretty nerve-wracking.”

He said in talking to constituents – his team knocked on around 20,000 doors through the campaign – he built up trust with voters, speculating that is why the riding opted for him.

“I think it was a matter of getting out and talking to people, building up confidence with them that I was a person who could do the job and represent them with my background and history with senior management and senior government, and the international side . . . people were looking for some leadership.”

Kootenay-Columbia’s voter turnout surpassed the national average of almost 66 per cent.

“The turnout was unbelievable at 72 per cent; that’s one of the highest in the country,” Mr. Morrison said.

“I’m just so grateful they did come out and vote and supported me . . . I’m going to hold myself accountable, to build on what we want and need for the Kootenay-Columbia region.”

Mr. Morrison said there are national and international items to deal with in Ottawa. But he will be bringing the Kootenay-Columbia issues to the forefront too. He cited the fluctuation in prices of coal in the Elk Rob Morrison, MP Valley as an example, and the concerns in the logging industry.

“That’s my takeaway, is to try and look after all the jobs that we have throughout our Kootenay Columbia (riding).”

He also wants to take a hard look at how the economy can be stabilized and grow.

“I am 100 per cent in favour of the pipeline, and our climate change program we have. I think we have to look after the economy, and that will look after a lot of these other items such as climate change.”

In speaking to the Pioneer, Mr. Morrison also noted the concerns about our relationship with Alberta.

“We have to have a solid relationship with the province right beside us,” he said.

“Traveling around, there were so many people that are directly affected by Alberta, by the energy sector . . . we have to support our neighbours.”

Outgoing MP reflects on term in office

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Wayne Stetski, outgoing Member of Parliament (MP) for Kootenay-Columbia, was in a contemplative mood when interviewed a few days after the election.

He recalls walking into the historic House of Commons after the election in 2015.

“To take your chair – you just sit there and you just think of the stories that have been created there. The words, the people, that have sat there for almost 100 years. There is no feeling quite like that particular feeling, one you never forget,” he said. “That’s where much of Canada was made, and we are one of the best countries in the world. To be part of that is very very special.”

Overall, he said, he is happy with what he accomplished as MP of this riding.

“We’ve helped hundreds of people over the last four years. That’s one of the

things we pride ourselves on is good public service,” Mr. Stetski said. “We did work really hard on behalf of our constituents, both in dealing with casework in the riding, but also taking their issues forward to Ottawa.”

When asked what he is most proud of from his time in office, Mr. Stetski listed a number of initiatives that came to mind, including the 20-horsepower regulation for the Columbia River main stem; having a national local food day bill pass through the House of Commons (though it did not pass at the Senate level); supporting the work of the Ktunaxa band to receive $16 million for study in the Qat’muk area (which includes the Jumbo Valley), and $25 million funding for Avalanche Canada, as some examples.

Submitted by Sgt. Darren Kakuno Detachment Commander Columbia Valley RCMP This past week, October 21st through October 27th, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 29 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Thursday, October 24th at about 8:30 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a residence on Old Westlock Mine Road in Invermere for a complaint of an unwanted male who refused to leave. The male departed the residence prior to police arriving. Upon speaking to the complainant the officer learned the male had assaulted an individual on the property before leaving. Police conducted patrols and located the male driving an uninsured pickup truck. The male was arrested for assault and an impaired driving investigation was initiated. The male was held in custody while police continued to investigate the assault and other offences.

out of his apartment in Ottawa, and have laid off all six of his staff (two in Cranbrook, two in Nelson, two in Ottawa). All the equipment must be inventoried and returned as it belongs to the House of Commons. All casework is confidential and therefore must be shredded, so Mr. Stetski’s staff have been busy contacting constituents who had raised issues with his office, informing them they will need to restate their case to the new MP. Once his end-of-term duties are wrapped up, Mr. Stetski plans to take some time off to reconnect with family and friends. When asked if he will run for office again, Mr. Stetski said he will have to see where life goes. But the election signs, he shared, are just in storage for now.

police responded to a two-vehicle collision on Athalmer Road near Lakeview Road in Invermere. The driver of a Suzuki Grand Vitara was west bound on Athalmer Road when she lost control of her vehicle then overcorrected and hit the guard rail and a second vehicle. The second vehicle reportedly had minor damage. Both drivers exchanged information and the second vehicle departed prior to police arrival. The Suzuki had to be towed due to damage to one of the tires. There were no injuries reported.

• On Saturday, October 26th, a resident of Canal Flats reported a theft of sheep horns from his residence on Grainger Road. The theft occurred from a locked shed sometime between October 21st and October 25th. It appeared the sheep horns were specifically targeted as other antlers and tools were untouched.

• On Saturday, October 26th, a theft was reported from a rental unit at the Horsethief Lodge in Panorama. The door to the unit was believed to be left ajar and a TV and other small items were stolen from the rental unit.

Short-term rentals, money matters and more

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Following a survey on short-term rentals in the Village of Radium Hot Springs that was divided on whether rentals were helpful or harmful for the community, council is considering requiring business licences for those who are looking to rent their places out by the night.

Survey results showed that 60 per cent of respondents were fine with short-term rentals, while 40 per cent were uncomfortable with them.

The proposed business licenses would cost $100 per unit and require a contact person to be available 24 hours a day for inquiries or complaints.

The Village will hold a town hall meeting to discuss the proposed plans at the Radium Hot Springs Centre at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 16th, a date that was chosen so part-time residents could plan to attend.

Council has two options for the money: spend it on affordable housing or invest it in tourism.

At their October 9th council meeting, members were torn on how to direct the funding.

Mayor Clara Reinhardt said she thought the Village’s marketing was already strong and that the tourism industry needs places for workers to live. Councillor Mike Gray, who owns Horsethief Creek Pub and Eatery, countered that increased tourism marketing was necessary to boost business in the off season. After some discussion, councillor Todd Logan suggested splitting the funding between tourism and housing. Instead of making a decision that night, council opted to invite Tourism Radium and Family Dynamix to their next meeting to share their thoughts.

Two weeks later, on October 23rd, representatives from Tourism Radium and Family Dynamix spoke at council to share how they could assist the Village.

Jessica Fairhart, the brand-new executive director for Tourism Radium and the Radium Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce, said the funding would make a big difference for her marketing efforts and would only be needed for the next two to three years. She said additional short-term tourism funding would help the organization enhance its website, draw visitors to the community in the shoulder season, and more effectively market the amenities Radium has to offer.

Next up was Pat Cope, executive director of Family Dynamix, who started by saying she didn’t view the opportunity to present to council as “a competition for money.”

Instead she was there to share about the need for affordable housing, which she defined as costing no more than 30 per cent of a resident’s income. As it is now, she said, minimum wage and the cost of housing “don’t jive.” It’s an even trickier situation for those who are employed in the tourism industry and whose hours get cut back during the shoulder season, she added.

Family Dynamix previously made an offer on a Radium motel, which they ended up withdrawing. Even so, Ms. Cope said she believes there is a strong need for housing in Radium.

“We’re pretty much almost at zero vacancy,” she said about rentals in the Valley.

“There are people coming in every day asking for places to live.”

After Ms. Fairhart and Ms. Cope finished their presentations, Mayor Reinhardt thanked them and said they had given council a lot to consider.

“It’s not a competition. We need it all,” she told them.

Council is expected to make its ruling on the funding allocation at its next meeting.

Radium makes contribution to Victim Services Earlier this year Family Dynamix requested help from municipalities to address a shortfall in Victim Services funding, which has been limiting the number of hours that their support worker is able to assist those in need.

Sgt. Darren Kakuno, detachment commander for the Columbia Valley RCMP, also spoke at Radium and Invermere council meetings to share about the value Victim Services provides.

In their first meeting in October, Radium council opted to provide $1,240 in funding immediately for their share of the remainder of 2019 – a figure which was calculated by dividing the number of Valley residents.

“We can only be responsible for our share, so that’s what makes it tricky,” Mayor Reinhardt said at the time. “We should really be working together (with the Regional

At the October 23rd council meeting, Pat Cope, executive director of Family Dynamix, thanked council for their contribution and said it means they are able to fund two and a half hours a week for their Victim Services staff person.

Invermere council took a different approach and directed staff to arrange a meeting to discuss the matter with the provincial government. They are currently waiting for a response.

RDEK said they hadn’t received a formal request on the issue so it hasn’t come before the board for consideration.

The woman who had been looking after him was doing so in breech of the Village’s bylaw that prohibits feeding wildlife.

“She is concerned for the safety of the peacock,” Mayor Reinhardt said. “The most humane thing is to find somebody who will take it.”

The Village already had a volunteer interested in adopting the bird, and council agreed that it would be best for the pretty bird to move to a rural home.

Photo by Amanda Nason Kicking Horse Canyon construction There are only 4.8 kilometres left to upgrade along Kicking Horse Canyon, but the terrain is so steep and the turns so tight that the provincial government is budgeting $601 million for the work.

“It’s almost a bit of a goat trail,” said Lindsay Parker, associate project director, adding that safety is the Province’s main objective with the project.

Avalanche risk and rock fall are other hazards along the stretch of highway.

“We are contemplating some significant blasting throughout the canyon,” she said.

When the blasting takes place, the highway will need to be closed with traffic rerouted, but she said Highway 93 and Highway 95 have the capacity to handle additional vehicles.

The closures are to be scheduled during the shoulder seasons in the spring and fall and during evenings as needed.

Ms. Parker said the Province expects to hire a contractor within the year and that work could begin as early as the fall of 2020.

Be no one’s fool: focus on fraud flags

Scams happen more often than you might think.

The incidents show up occassionally in the police report, or online, or victims call or drop in to the Pioneer office.

And what we tell basically everyone who alerts us at the Pioneer to yet another scam, is that we are sorry this happened to that person. However, it’s not even close to newsworthy anymore. Why? Because they are so ubiquitous, it would be like reporting that a business had a sale, or a drunk driver was picked up by RCMP, or someone’s dog was found wandering the streets. It’s news to the person it is happening to for sure, but not newsy to the greater community. Once again this past week, we were asked by a reader if we could write something about scams happening in the Columbia Valley right now. So this week, we raise the issue here as a word of caution.

Scammers seem to get more and more creative. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) lists many types of scams that have been identified, including telemarketing, identity theft, door-to-door, online, business, email and text, and mail scams. They ask for overpayment on something, then you get a nasty note from the bank, or they want gift cards for payment of some imagined debt, for example.

Thousands of Canadians lose millions of dollars to fraudsters every year, the CRA reports.

The Office of the Privacy Commissioner urges Canadians to not give personal information such as a credit card number or Social Insurance Number over the phone unless it’s to a trusted person or you initiated the call yourself. If someone calls unexpectedly and requests your personal or financial information, try calling the organization they are representing to verify that the request is legitimate. Reputable firms never ask for personal information without significant safeguards.

The Competition Bureau’s Little Black Book of Scams also offers more information on identity theft and other types of scams. In the booklet, they list warning signs that should make you stop and think before proceeding, including wire transfers, overpayment requests, spelling mistakes, personal information requests, unsolicited calls, unsolicited friend requests on social media, astounding mail offers, and ‘it’s just too good to be true’ offers.

But even after all these tricks, it can be easy to be fooled. After all, if you are a good person, you likely want to see the good in others too. It’s hard to believe there are people who make their living tricking you out of your hard-earned money. But be aware, take care, and check with the authorities before moving forward. Oh, one more thing. If someone asks you to pay in Apple iTunes gift cards, just hang up the phone.

Anyone can get the flu—a sometimes serious and even deadly infection of the upper airway caused by an influenza virus that spreads easily from person to person. Getting your flu shot can protect you from getting the flu, but the flu shot is about more than just protecting yourself. Getting the flu shot plays an important role in protecting your loved ones, especially those whose health is most vulnerable.

“Having the flu shot reduces both your risk of getting the flu and spreading it to our most vulnerable loved ones who are at high risk of flu-related complications,” says Dr. Silvina Mema, Interior Health Medical Health Officer. “We especially recommend those at risk as well as visitors to hospitals, long-term care facilities and other patient-care locations get the flu shot.”

Children under five years of age, pregnant women, aboriginal people, people over the age of 65, and adults and children with underlying health conditions are at an increased risk of serious complications if they get the flu.

Patti Morven, a resident of Kelowna and a member of the Nisga’a First Nation, is a family support worker. She understands the importance of getting

the flu shot for her community.

“I work with the very young and with Elders,” says Patti. “Getting the flu shot not only provides safety for my mom but also the families I’m in contact with throughout the flu season.”

The flu shot is available through your pharmacist, health care provider, First Nations community health nurse, or your local health unit. Interior Health (IH) immunization clinics will begin the week of Oct. 28 and will continue in communities throughout November, with flu shots available by appointment throughout the rest of the season.

Reconciliation and healing through dance

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Jess McMann of Wild Mint Arts found healing and a sense of belonging through powwow dancing. Now she’s teaching local indigenous children to dance and welcoming them to perform opening acts for her upcoming show, Nimihitowin!, which is a Cree word for dancing in celebration.

“I’m adopted so my first introduction to culture was through powwow dance class. Through powwow, it connected me to culture, to my birth family, to where I’m from in Saskatchewan,” she said.

As a child she was so shy that she kept her eyes fixed on the ground or hidden behind her hair. She said she didn’t feel like she fit in with her family and didn’t know who she was. But everything changed when she started powwow dancing.

“Seeing other Indigenous women who were strong and confident and could speak and dance and have their heads up, that really drew me in,” she said. “It showed me that I could be somebody different and I didn’t have to go through life like this, and it transformed me.”

Now that she’s become a similarly courageous woman, she’s on a mission to inspire others through dance. Ms. McMann, who lives in Calgary, started powwow dancing when she was 14 and has never stopped. Now an instructor too, she wants to offer her students the healing she found in dance.

“For me it’s about empowering the youth and people who are adopted or have been in foster care and never had that access (to their culture), and this is a great starting point to start to feel proud about themselves and where they come from,” she said. “I really tribute this powwow and our traditions to helping me become who I am now, and I want to offer that to all these indigenous youth and adults too.”

Powwow dance can be healing not only for individuals but also for society, she said, adding that dance helps build connections between the audience and the performers and that anyone is welcome to stick around after the show to chat with her.

“It’s important in this act of reconciliation that everybody has a chance to experience in some form our traditional culture because it is so powerful to change lives,” she said. “I’d like people to see the beauty and strength in it.”

Besides being good medicine for everyone’s souls, she said the show is also heaps of fun.

Looking back at legalization in the Valley

By Breanne Massey Special to the Pioneer After the nation legalized cannabis more than a year ago, the Columbia Valley has seen support from the community grow.

Blooming World Cannabis and, soon, the Invermere Cannabis Store have been pioneering the recreational retail cannabis business in the Valley. To get a sense of how each business is evolving its operations over time, the Pioneer reached out to the entrepreneurs to hear their perspectives.

Blooming World Cannabis Blooming World Cannabis was the first recreational cannabis retailer to open its doors in the Columbia Valley.

The District of Invermere (DOI) approved the proposal for business in January 2019 after Blooming World’s chief executive officer Oliver Hogue and general manager Marjorie Fournier had successfully fielded questions and concerns from the community at a public hearing the previous week.

With eight months of experience under their belts, the duo agrees business has been blooming.

“There (are) customers from every group’s age, over 19 of course,” Ms. Fournier wrote to the Pioneer via e-mail. “Also, a lot of the seniors come in for the oil, and they can enjoy the senior discount.”

But the most sought after update the community has been requesting, Ms. Fournier says, is about the federal government’s amended regulations to the Cannabis Act. It came into play on October 17th and will result in a range of selected products to appear in the store soon. Canadians can expect cannabis edibles, concentrates and topicals to be available around in December.

“It will take some time for the product to get it in the store… and we are very excited to offer all those new products,” she added.

Blooming World Cannabis has been working toward providing incentives to clear up misconceptions about its products within the community. That means they’ve been providing recommendations on products, education about usage and incentives to buy from regulated operators as opposed to the black market.

“Licensed producers have to use regulated products to grow. (It’s) much safer than buying it on the black market and not knowing what was used through the growing process,” said Ms. Fournier. She added that they are working to offer lower prices and discounts to deter people from shopping on the black market.

“We also offer education and feedback on the product, with our selection of over 100 strains. There are a lot of options to choose from.”

For others in the community, the impact to the environment has been flagged as the packaging in the Cannabis industry at-large has been scrutinized. However, Blooming World Cannabis is working toward finding alternatives to mitigate those impacts.

“Health Canada put regulations on packaging,” Ms. Fournier explained when asked about this issue. “Packaging is recyclable. Some is also made of compostable material. You can recycle it on your own, or we encourage our customers by (offering a discount) to bring it back to the store and we send it back to the producers. They use it again, or they use it in a program, for example, to make playgrounds in parks. The packaging will change with time, but producers are now aware of the extreme amount of packaging, and there is talk of a compostable hemp pouch that might revolutionize the plastic industry.”

The appeal of working in a fast-moving industry with lots of changes continues to motivate the duo on striving for diverse products in a newly evolving field.

Attendees will learn more about Invermere’s new Wildfire Emergency Pre-Plan and hear about some of the challenges Invermere’s firefighters would face in responding to wildfires that may threaten properties in Invermere.

The Wildfire Emergency PrePlan investigates how the fire department would respond to specific areas of Invermere and what equipment would be needed, should a wildfire blow through. For example, the contractor hired to put together the Pre-Plan looked at trees, combustible roofs, access to water and more.

“We had an outside contractor come in to basically preestablish certain areas of the community and how we would respond to certain areas and what equipment we would need,” explains Fire Chief Jason Roe of the Wildfire Emergency Pre-Plan.

The plan includes maps with detailed information, such as which houses will need sprinklers on the roof or where to patrol for spot fires.

And the plan makes clear and accessible the information needed for other departments that come to assist in a major event, including pre-established safety zones, and where to access water.

The FireSmart event in Invermere is open to everyone, Chief Roe says. He wants community members to learn more about what some small, affordable things they can do to reduce risk to fire at their homes.

We want to let the community know how to take their property (and FireSmart it),” says Chief Roe. “It makes the fire department’s response much more effective, not having to deal with a fire on every property.”

Two of western Canada’s specialists in interface risk reduction and fire protection, Alan Westhaver and Don Mortimer, will be at the meeting and will talk about the small actions that can make a big difference in reducing home fire hazards, and discuss Invermere’s plan. Chief Roe says both speakers are great and it is well worth the time to come and listen to them.

The event takes place Tuesday, November 5th from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Columbia Valley Centre.

Second cannabis store to open in the Valley

By Breanne Massey Special to the Pioneer The art of growing a business is not a new concept to the Columbia Valley.

But after months of presentations and a positive public recommendation, Ryan Haynes and his silent partner have successfully procured the licence to setup a recreational cannabis shop at the Crossroads.

The Invermere Cannabis Store is targeting an early-November opening date after completing renovations and onboarding new hires.

“We’re targeting a November 1st open date. It’s going to be close though,” said Mr. Haynes by phone with the Pioneer on October 17th while indicating the Recreational Retail Cannabis Licence arrived a mere 10 days ago.

“We’ve interviewed 7 to 8 people in the last few days . . . I’ve always worked retail so it’s my passion. This is customer service and it’s interesting and fun. It’s fun to build something new and hire people.”

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) directors approved the proposed shop opening at their regular council meeting on Friday, February 8th.

“It was approved by the RDEK at a public hearing,” said Mr. Haynes. “We had unanimous approval and it was really one of the first steps to present a positive community recommendation to the government. Since then I’ve been waiting for my application to be processed because there’s a backlog.”

A B.C. cannabis retail store licence will authorize licensees to sell non-medical cannabis products and can-

nabis accessories, according to B.C.’s Cannabis Licencing website.

But overall, the Columbia Valley community has been supportive of this endeavour and Mr. Haynes has been happily fielding questions from the community.

“There’s been a lot of interest and a lot of curious people asking questions since legalization was passed. People are interested, open and honest,” he added.

The Cannabis Act legalized the production, distribution and sales of dried marijuana through regulated vendors across Canada, according to the Department of Justice under the Government of Canada.

Mr. Haynes said edibles are coming to the business after the product is made available.

“We will be adding some more space for edibles, and potentially fluids when they come,” he explained.

The goal of the Invermere Cannabis Store is twofold: to sell safe marijuana and to encourage responsible sales.

“I think this is a good way to regulate and tax it. It’s good,” he added.

Regular business hours will be Sundays to Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., as well as 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

“We’re very excited to try something new, something different,” said Mr. Haynes.

“The other retailer was in right away and he did a good job… overall in the province, it’s been a struggle to get these stores up off the ground.”

When asked about the application process, Mr. Haynes replied: “The application is intense: the financial and security screening. They dig deep, which is great.”

He added it is expensive to acquire the licence, averaging around $20,000 for a Recreational Retail Cannabis Licence in the province.

However, Mr. Haynes believes it is an exciting, worthwhile investment to try something new.

“Responsible sale is the goal,” he explained.

“There’s been a lot of interest and a lot of curious people asking questions since legalization was passed. People are interested, open and honest.”

At this stage, Mr. Haynes has not experienced any misconceptions from the public about legalization and he is looking forward to opening the doors of his new shop.

Early November marks the beginning of breeding season for Bighorn Sheep in southern British Columbia. As they enter their rut, rams collide headon to establish a hierarchy and the right to breed with ewes. If you listen closely, you might even be able to hear the sound of rams headbanging in a battle for dominance. This breeding display is spectacular to view.

Every year during the rut, visitors arrive in droves to Radium Hot Springs for the annual Headbanger Festival.

Viewing wildlife up close is a special experience, and getting that perfect photo to capture the memory is a must-have for some.

However, WildSafeBC recognizes that taking photos of wildlife can sometimes put people and wildlife at risks. WildSafeBC has therefore developed a Photography Code of Ethics. The intent is to reduce a photographer’s actions that may interfere with wildlife’s natural behaviours or that may put people at risk if they are too close to their subjects. To safely photograph wildlife, remember: • Nature comes first. Do not contribute to human habituation or interfere with the animal’s natural behaviour. Do not use calls to draw in wildlife.

Avoid crowding the subject and use a long lens to maintain your distance.

• Research your subject so as not to interfere with wildlife’s routine needs such as feeding and raising young.

• Be respectful of private property. Tread lightly and avoid damaging fragile ecosystems. Stay on trails if unsure.

• Do not stop on highways or roads where speeds exceed 60km/hr unless there is an approved pullout. This can be unsafe for fellow motorists or for wildlife if they cross traffic.

• Do not approach dangerous wildlife such as bears, cougars or wolves. If the animal is aware of your presence, it is better to leave the area slowly or seek the shelter of a structure or vehicle.

• Never feed or bait wildlife to obtain a photo. This includes the use of salt which may have the unintentional consequence of spreading disease.

Rocking out to a childhood dream

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Terra Lightfoot always wanted to grow up to play rock and roll.

With three albums out and another on the way, her delight in the electric guitar has only increased, and she’s convinced her audiences can sense the joy radiating from her when she gets to rock out.

“When I was a kid, if I heard electric guitar on the radio I would get so excited,” she said. “I still have those singer-songwriter songs that are the more tenderhearted kind of numbers, but for me what excites me is playing the electric guitar and turning it up to 10.”

She will crank the volume when she comes to the Valley to perform with her rock trio.

“We give it everything we have on stage. It’s a real rock show,” she said. “It’s the most rewarding life in the world. I couldn’t ask for a better lot in life.”

While she’s performed across North America and in Japan and Australia, Ms. Lightfoot is particularly keen on visiting the Valley.

“It’s really exciting for me to be able to actually play and stay in the mountains because that’s always my favourite part of being on the road in Canada. I love the mountains. They’re so grounding, so beautiful,” she said.

“I’m so jazzed, and I hope that I can come back to Invermere again and again and again.”

Ms. Lightfoot plans to go out hiking and adventuring during her stay and finds much of her inspiration in nature as well as in her own life experiences and stories from her loved ones.

“Basically all my music comes straight from the heart so that’s what you’re going to see and hear and feel at the show,” she said. “Music is a very cathartic and therapeutic thing for me . . . We definitely believe in the healing power of rock and roll.”

Ms. Lightfoot will play a mix of her songs at her Invermere show along with a surprise bag of cover songs that fans requested.

She will be performing at Pynelogs Art Gallery and Cultural Centre on Thursday, November 7th.

Memorial art workshop returns

By Breanne Massey Special to the Pioneer A free art workshop for children five and up will honour the late Columbia Valley artist Sue Wells.

The fifth annual memorial art workshop entitled Sue Wells Day will take place Sunday, November 10, between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. as two hour-long workshops for budding artists to create art. This year’s theme will be to create artwork about fish.

“Sue Wells was a well-known artist and art teacher,” Jami Scheffer, executive director and gallery manager at Pynelogs, wrote to the Pioneer.

“She thought everyone, especially children, could benefit from having art in their lives as a way of self expression. She taught art classes at the College of the Rockies as well as for at-risk kids.”

After her death in Februrary of 2014, the Sue Wells Art Foundation began as a memorial for Sue to encourage children to create an original piece of artwork to take home thanks to financial support from W. Brett Wilson and family, as well as several community businesses who sponsor the workshop.

“The original concept of providing six different art stations for kids to choose from has been the best format,” Ms. Scheffer replied in response to being asked about how the workshop has evolved over the last five years.

“So we really haven’t changed it too much. Last year, the theme was halloween. This year we are celebrating ‘fish’ as this was one of Sue’s themes.”

But for her daughter, the workshop still seems surreal.

“We really didn’t know how many kids would show

up the first year and it was a huge success,” Carly Wells, Sue’s daughter, wrote to the Pioneer.

“We ask talented, creative people to help instruct the kids each year and add different styles and techniques so no project is repeated. Every year the kids can look forward to trying something new and fresh.”

Carly says the biggest driver in starting the workshop was to create an event for other children, so that her mom’s love of art could be passed on to children in the way she had passed her love of art on into the Valley.

“My mom loved teaching art classes and spent a lot of time with my daughter teaching her painting techniques and making crafts,” Carly explained. “She always believed that art was healing and every child should have a chance to create and express their own individuality through their own artwork.”

“Together with Black Star, our family decided to create the Sue Wells free art day so every child has a chance to play and hopefully discover a love for all things creative as my mom did.”

But the most distinct part of the event for Carly now, after watching it evolve and remembering her own daughter creating art with Sue Wells, is to see the stories each child can tell through the creative process.

“My favorite part of the event is watching the kids create their own masterpiece,” Carly said. “Every child has a different style and the creativity that comes out of these kids is amazing. These kids walk out with a piece of art they can display at home and be proud of, and hopefully it inspires them to continue to be creative and have art be a part of their lives forever.”

Free workshop for farm producers Submitted by Columbia Basin Trust Workshops for primary farm producers on cost of production and agriculture succession planning will be offered by the Basin Business Advisors Program (BBA) in locations throughout the Columbia Basin region this fall and spring.

When determining cost of production, farm businesses encounter unique challenges that impact profitability. “Understanding and managing farm production costs is an area where many farm operators have indicated they need information,” says BBA agriculture specialist Tracey Fredrickson. “This workshop walks you through the costing of production process and introduces you to the tools that can be customized to your specific operation.”

The BBA Program is launching a new series of cost-of-production workshops for meat and vegetable producers. These workshops are aimed at helping farmers develop tools and production costing skills for various crops and livestock production to improve the efficiency and profitability of their farms.

Optional one-to-one consulting with the workshop facilitator will be available to a limited number of participants. Invermere’s event (Meat & Vegetable Producers) is on Thursday, November 14th.

Hal Saunders was sipping his coffee and getting ready for his routine Saturday morning run when he opened a Facebook message from a stranger named Brandy Vernon who was wondering if he was her father.

“I know it’s not me, but maybe I could help,” Hal thought.

After all, Brandy mentioned his high school, and Hal still had his yearbook. If her father had been one of his classmates, maybe he could help connect them.

Hal didn’t have any biological children despite his best attempts in his first marriage, and had long ago made a reluctant peace with not being able to pass along his genes to the next generation.

“Down the road, do you live on?” he asked. “Not having biological kids . . . I knew that I was the end of the line. My DNA, my genetics, my bloodline ends with me.”

Over the years even his mother gave up on her dream of a biological red-haired grandchild and presented Hal with an unsigned congratulations-on-your-bundle-of-joy card she’d been waiting to give him on a happy occasion.

Hal already had five stepdaughters and a dozen grandchildren he loves to the max. So, before Brandy reached out, Hal’s family already filled his heart, if not his longing for a baby he had helped create.

Hal had dated a little before getting married, but hadn’t had a what-do-we-do-now conversation with a girlfriend or an ex, hadn’t seen a positive pregnancy test or gotten the slightest hint that he might have sired a child.

“It was inconceivable that I had a daughter,” he said.

But a few messages into their conversation – which Hal peppered with encouraging smiley emojis – Brandy sent him a picture of the birth-information card her mother had filled out when Brandy was adopted at birth.

Many of the fields were left blank, but Hal’s name was inked onto the card along with his age, 22, and a brief description of him that said he liked sports.

From that instant three weeks ago, Hal knew he was Brandy’s father and immediately welcomed her into his life.

“Obviously I didn’t go running that morning. I got a little distracted,” he said with a laugh. “Brandy was quite a surprise. It’s not every day at 61 that you find out you have a daughter that you never knew about.”

Hal had dated Brandy’s mother so briefly that at first he couldn’t recall who she was. He doesn’t have any memory of how or why their relationship ended. Retrieving a Halloween photo of himself with Brandy’s mother where the pair were dressed as clowns, Hal calculated back from Brandy’s birthdate to guess that her mother was already three months pregnant in the photo.

“You think if you had a child with someone, they

Even so, he’s grateful that she chose to put his name on Brandy’s form.

“I’ve never had any anger. I’ve never had any resentment to the mother,” he said. “I’m very thankful that she did put my name on the papers . . . If it wasn’t for that, I would have been untraceable.”

Initially Hal felt consumed by guilt for missing out on the first 39 years of Brandy’s life, but that was soon replaced with love and a gratitude so big it keeps spilling out of his eyes.

Describing their first phone call, he said: “she’s crying on one end and I’m crying on the other end and I’m not that emotional of a guy.”

Earlier this month, Hal and his wife Jeannine went to Edmonton to meet Brandy and her daughters, Mya, age 6, and Aubrey, age 4.

But first Hal and Brandy spent a few hours alone together catching up on all their lost years.

“I really felt a lot of love for her initially, and when I opened the door and saw her I just fell more in love with her,” Hal said. “She’s a part of my life and she always will be now.”

As the father/daughter pair got acquainted, they learned that they share some personality traits, have the POP/COUNTRY same nose and both love lemon meringue pie and peanut CANADIAN RECORDING butter.

Light up the park The Rite to Ride Foundation is bringing some light to the night as “a final hurrah” for an amazing season of skateboarding, said founder Devin Publicover.

Light up the Park will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, November 3rd at Mount Nelson Athletic Park. Rite to Ride chose the date of the time change as clocks will fall back and darkness will come early.

“We are literally lighting up the park with spot lights, LED lights and every light imaginable,” he said, adding that there will be a prize for the person in the best lit outfit.

Activities will include skateboarding, a glowstick scavenger hunt and a fundraising BBQ with hot chocolate and s’mores. Glow sticks and lights will be available for purchase, and guests are asked to be decked out with at least two lights.

There is no cost to participate, and skateboarders age five and up are welcome.

“It should be quite the spectacle,” he said.

LOOKING FOR A GREAT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY? Invermere Council is looking for people to participate in a Mayor’s Task Force on Housing.

WHAT DOES AN ADVISORY COMMITTEE DO? The Mayor’s Task Force on Housing’s intended purpose is to provide recommendations to the District of Invermere Council on innovative policies, directives and specific initiatives to increase the supply, diversity, affordability and attainability of all forms of housing in Invermere.

The Housing Task Force shall provide information to Council that will investigate the current state of housing within the community using the members’ varied subject matter expertise and background to recommend a future state, including an action plan for consideration.

The Housing Task Force shall review all forms of housing including housing for low and moderate income households, affordable rental housing, staff and workforce housing and attainable homeownership.

The District is looking for members from the community as follows: • Two (2) citizens at large who reside within Invermere; • One (1) member from the housing / social services sector operating within Invermere; • Two (2) members from the development community operating within Invermere; • One (1) member from the business community operating within Invermere; and • One (1) member with professional expertise in housing from Invermere or the surrounding area.

Brandy said they even share a similar sense of humour.

The next day, Hal and Jeannine met Brandy’s family and took presents for their new grandchildren.

Aubrey snuggled right up to Hal, while Mya demonstrated her cartwheel expertise for Jeannine.

“The kids took to us quite quickly,” he said. “Everything went really, really well.”

So well, in fact, that he and Jeannine are already planning their next visit.

“I could just be sitting here doing nothing and my eyes well up,” he said. “It makes me really happy that they’re all in my life.”

Brandy is enthusiastic too but more reserved.

“It’s a really overwhelming and exciting feeling,” she said. “I look forward to getting to know him and his family and spending time together. Our families will get along really well.”

Their joy is, of course, bittersweet. For as much as Hal and Brandy have gained, they now also carry the knowledge of what they lost, the love that was always there waiting for them.

Although Brandy’s adoptive parents passed away before she reached out to him, Hal wishes he could thank them for raising her so well and loving her so thoroughly.

“My heart opened up right away to her. Honestly I can’t get enough of her and the kids,” he said. “It’s a very sad happy story.”

Common stock trading mistakes Submitted by Sara Worley & Brendan Donahue Investment Advisors, Manulife Securities Incorporated Everyone makes investing mistakes at one time or another. Learning how to recognize and avoid as many as possible can help an investor prosper. Here are a few.

Familiarity Investors usually succeed if they buy what they know.

The problem is, investors sometimes equate this advice with buying stocks of companies that make products they are familiar with. In other words, liking Lululemon Athletica’s yoga pants isn’t a good enough reason to buy their stock.

To make a sound decision, one must look very closely at a stock’s fundamentals, competition and sector trends. If the answer is unclear, people should only invest an amount that they are comfortable with losing.

Short-term bias Investment research is based on a 12-month outlook, while stocks are priced minute-to-minute. This can make the relationship between the two appear disjointed. For example, as of September 25, 2019 Credit Suisse assigned a 12-month price target of $209 on shares of Apple Inc (AAPL). However, the shares traded as high as $232.07 and as low as $142.19 over the past 52 weeks.

It can be easy to get discouraged by price fluctuations, but investors must remain patient and focused on the long-term. Have things really changed for the company fundamentally or are price movements just market action?

Moreover, if a stock’s price swings too much for a person’s comfort, it’s probably too risky for them.

Dividends A strong dividend can be a sign of a healthy, prosperous company, or that a stock is temporarily undervalued, presenting a buying opportunity.

It can also be a sign of trouble. A dividend of more than 7 per cent in an average-priced stock market tends to be a warning sign. And from an overall performance standpoint, price declines on a stock can chew through dividend income in a hurry.

To avoid dividend bias, pick fairly priced, high quality stocks with average dividend yields. This should help balance out returns by adding a capital gains component.

Chasing past returns It happens all the time: people hear about a stock on television or the golf course, notice that it’s going up and buy in hopes that the trend will continue. Often, all a person knows is that the stock price is increasing, or that someone they know made a lot of money owning it.

The problem is that some people who buy stocks like this might not truly understand what they are buying. Historical winners might seem foolproof but consider the dotcom bubble in 2000 and housing crisis in 2008. That’s what happens when people crowd into specific investments or asset classes with little regard for fundamental analysis.

The bottom line is, it’s OK to dabble in hot stock ideas, but self-control and diversification are imperative to avoid getting caught in any one stock or sector.

Doubling Down Sometimes, investors try to break even on a losing stock by doubling-up on the shares when they’re under selling pressure. This is done so that even a 50 per cent rebound will bring the total investment back to par.

This is almost always a bad idea, as most investors lack the ability to time the markets correctly. Further, there will almost always be something better to buy. The smart investor will cut their losses and move on.

Never selling Many people wonder why their advisor will recommend they sell some or all of a particularly profitable stock.

If a stock is doing well why would they sell it?

The truth is, never selling even a portion of a winning stock can be just as costly a mistake as doubling-down or holding losing stocks too long. A gain is not truly earned until it’s realized. Savvy investors will sell profits as they go and reinvest in attractive new opportunities.

Final thoughts Sometimes all it takes to succeed is to win by not losing. Applying less emotion and more analysis are sure-fire ways to ensure smarter investment decisions.

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The 21st annual Business Excellence Awards was an evening of celebration for businesses and nonprofit organizations across the Columbia Valley.

The awards, held Thursday, October 24th at the Radium Course, is an annual event hosted by the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce (CVCC) and the Radium Chamber of Commerce. The evening included red carpet photos, appies and dessert, entertainment by DJ Juice Man, and an awards ceremony, MCed this year by Radium Mayor Clara Reinhardt. Twelve awards paid recognition to the hard work and success by businesses and nonprofits across the Columbia Valley.

The awards are important, remarks CVCC executive director Pete Bourke, because they bring businesses from across the Valley together for a night of celebration and comradery.

“This was certainly echoed throughout many of the speeches from the award recipients,” said Mr. Bourke. “The awards themselves are open to any business, not just Chamber members, and are completely guided by our community as a whole.”

Many recipients thanked their staff, and acknowledged the supportive business community found in the Columbia Valley. When accepting the Invermere Dental Clinic award, Dr. Richard Kanan said, with nine employees in the clinic – all of whom have been there at least five years, he was grateful for his staff who “run the show.”

Tara Morgan of Bird’s Eye Boutique remarked, on receiving the Retailer of the Year award,“I’m grateful to do business in such a great business community.”

In a followup post on social media, Ms. Morgan said, “To be nominated in a category of businesses that I constantly find inspiring and innovative was an incredible honour. But for the Bird’s Eye team to accept an award amongst such an incredible and supportive business community was very humbling. Thank you Columbia Valley.”

Mike Gray, who earned the entrepreneur of the year award, congratulated all the nominees for the evening’s awards, noting there has barely been a business listed that he has not frequented himself, especially the food and beverage offerings.

Valley Zipline Adventures earned the tourism / adventure activity award. Co-owner Patrick Tolchard gave a shoutout to his 18 staff, investors and the community. Valley Zipline Adventures Facebook page later posted: “We are absolutely honoured to have been selected as this year’s winner for the Tourism & Adventure category at the Columbia Valley Business Excellence Awards! This is an amazing valley with so many hardworking folks. Cheers to much more success for us all.”

Fuze Food & Smoothie Bar’s Sarah Adamson remarked that she was “super grateful just to be here tonight,” later posting she was thankful to staff, loyal customers and fellow business owners who are all part of the huge support system that contributes to the restaurant’s success.

The community impact award was won by the Invermere and Radium Rotary Clubs, with Radium’s Erin Palashniuk and Invermere’s Al Miller accepting.

“On behalf of the Rotary Club of Radium, I extend thanks to all the businesses. We call on you time and time again for support/for donations,” Ms. Palashniuk remarked.

“Without you, we wouldn’t be as successful as we are.”

Mann, Robin (Rob) Gordon April 20th, 1947October 20th, 2019

Robin (Rob) Gordon Mann, a longtime resident of Invermere, passed away after a lengthy illness at the age of 72 at his home on October 20th, 2019.

Rob was born on April 20th, 1947 in Edmonton. After moving to B.C. and graduating from high school in Cranbrook, he met his future wife Alana. Both loved the Kootenays and settled on Invermere as the place to make their home and raise a family.

They were married for 49 years.

Rob worked for B.C. Tel/Telus for 35 years. He greatly enjoyed his job as it involved repairs and problem solving, something he also did a lot of at home. His preference was always to build or fix, rather than buy.

Like his father, he was a skilled outdoorsman. He loved hiking and camping, and we all envied how good he was at fishing. He was also a long-time member of the local badminton club and participated in many recreational sports.

Rob was a role model for his family and friends with his strong work ethic and ability to be self-sufficient and independent. His garden was always amazing, and he clearly felt proud that he was able to provide fresh food for his family. Robin successfully lived his life the way he wanted: in a small town, in a beautiful valley and with his loving family.

Rob was pre-deceased by his parents, Robert and Joan. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Alana; children Richard and Michelle, 4 grandchildren, 3 siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

There will be no service by request.

Valley Foods gains grocer gold

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Valley Foods earned the top recognition for an independent grocer at the 2019 Grocery Innovations Canada conference.

The gold award was a crowning achievement for the Invermere grocery store, noted co-owner Sydney-Anne Porter.

“Teamwork makes the dream work,” Ms. Porter remarked. “Our unique management style and determination to stay ahead of retail trends were instrumental in earning Valley Foods this prestigious award in Toronto.”

Ms. Porter has been in the grocery world for 35 years. She started out as a temporary part-time employee at an independent grocery store in Prince George.

She fell in love with the industry and worked her way up. When she looked at opening Valley Foods in Invermere, she ended up partnering with the people who had first hired her back in 1984. Ms. Porter eventually bought out her original partners and brought her sons on board to help lead Valley Foods forward. Greg and Eric Lapointe are now happily running the business, with some support from Ms. Porter still.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers (CFIG) awards program recognizes the success of outstanding independent retailers each year. The CFIG, which stretches across the country, evaluates independently-owned stores on retail excellence and is rated on customer service, staff, department management,

store layout, merchandising, creativity, cleanliness, and community involvement. Valley Foods falls under the ‘small’ category (stores under 15,000 square feet of retail space) at CFIG. This is the latest and greatest in a stack of awards for Valley Foods. At the 2017 CFIG awards, the store took home silver in the same category, and have also won several regional awards from CFIG. Upon winning sil-

ver in 2017, Ms. Porter had told the Pioneer they would be analyzing their written evaluation, with eyes on the top prize. Hard work and dedication led the AG Valley team to achieve that goal this year with their gold medal victory.

Compliments poured in on social media following the award announcement, with more than 100 comments, and counting, congratulating Valley Foods.

Our award-winning community newspaper located in the beautiful Thompson-Okanagan is seeking an editor.

Provincial issues like the ongoing biosolids debate and public access to lakes are always simmering under the surface, and national and international lumber, mining and agriculture markets are very influential in this region. As editor, you have the opportunity to tell the stories that matter to the people of the Nicola Valley, many of whom continue to rely on the newspaper to keep them informed.

The successful applicant will work with local contributors while producing six to eight stories per week, taking photographs to accompany those stories, writing sports, columns and editorials, and editing the stories coming in from the reporter and columnists.

The editor will also lay out the newspaper once per week using Adobe InDesign and upload the paper and photo galleries to the newspaper’s website and post them on social media.

The successful candidate will be community-oriented and have a serious interest in current events — locally, regionally, provincially, nationally and globally.

This position is ideal for a candidate with at least two years of reporting experience wishing to gain editor experience in the ever-evolving world of journalism.

Qualifications: The preferred candidate will be a self-starter with an accredited journalism degree who works efficiently on his or her own. The preferred candidate will also be highly organized and flexible in the hours she or he works in order to cover community events as they arise. The successful candidate will be committed to a high standard of writing and will be proficient in CP Style. Proficiency in InDesign and PhotoShop are required, as are strong layout skills.

Submitted by Windermere Valley Minor Hockey Society On Friday, October 25th before the Rockies’ hockey game, both the Midget and Bantam teams were recognized for their achievement of winning the Tier 4 BC Championships last March. Next time you are at the arena, look for those two large blue banners.

The Midget female team played games 3 and 4 of their tiering at home, hosting both Okotoks Gold and the Prairie Thunder (Brooks). The first game saw 6 goals by 5 different players: Pressly Irons (2), Mia Gervais, Mya Spencer, Jersey Ponych and Carly McDonald-Bell. They

were victorious 6-2 despite being outshot 32-27. Game 2 against Brooks on Sunday had the girls heading into the start of the third period down 3-1, but the team rallied and tied it up with 12 minutes remaining. In the final minute a rush by Soren Douglas finished the game off winning by a score of 5-4. Goals were also recorded by Naomi Gervais and Carly McDonald-Bell.

The Atom A team travelled to Cranbrook where they entered a Tier 2 tournament (our teams are tier 4). They lost their first game 5-4 to Kimberley, beat a Calgary team 7-2, and then lost to Spokane. They played Spokane again, and that game was 3-2 for Spokane, a much closer game than the first one. This team has developed their passing skills, and most goals have an assist. Cooper Cote scored 6 goals in the 4 games, with assists from Tobin Donahue, Ryker Chasse, Lane Warriner, and Memphis Martin. Other goals were scored by Memphis Martin (2), Chayton Martin, Liam Galloway, Jake Gramlich, and Tobin Donahue (2).

The PeeWee A team travelled to Kimberley for their tiering tournament. They played all four games against tough A teams and ended up with two wins and two losses. Jesse McIntosh played fantastic in net against Elk Valley stopping 40 shots while the line of Jack McAffer, Spencer Goldsmith and Everett Friesen combined for four goals against Cranbrook with Spencer getting the hat trick. Spencer also has to be congratulated on getting only 1 penalty since the beginning of the year. A big improvement.

The PeeWee B team also was in Kimberley and had a very successful weekend, winning games over Creston, Golden and Elkford. They lost to Fernie in a close game.

This team needs to be congratulated on their great start to the season, with a 5-1 record thus far. Last year was a struggle, but they have improved a lot. Goals were scored

by Bryce Nicholas Hall (3), Alyssa Shaw, Chase Kinsey (2), Mackenna O’Connor, Tegegn Booth (first 2 goals as a Rockie) and Thomas Meena (2).

The Novice had their first games against Kimberley. No scores are kept but the players had 2 games, and all had fun beginning their hockey season. The team travels to Fernie on November 8-9th for their first tournament of the year.

By Brett Holt, president Columbia Valley Rockies The Columbia Valley Rockies picked up one point and moved into fourth place as puck luck evaded the team.

The Rockies welcomed the Grand Forks Border Bruins into the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena Friday night in front of a hometown crowd of more than 400 people. They were also thrilled to host the students and staff from Edgewater Elementary school who were treated to a very entertaining game. The first period had both teams moving the puck back and forth with neither team able to dominate. The visitors were able to take a lead into the dressing room after the first period with a power play goal and the Rockies had the edge in shots with a 9 to 7 margin.

Forty-five seconds into the second the Rockies would erupt the home crowd as Alex Novakowski scored, from Zachery Dovichak and Kyle Boudreau, bringing the teams even. However the visitors were able to answer again 8 minutes later. The Rockies would then take to the power play and give the hometown crowd a gift as Caileb Berge found the twine on a sweet dish from Benjamin Lake and Jace Paarup. The Rockies would take the lead as Hunter Becket was rewarded for his determination from Colby Philips and Caileb Berge. However the visitors were able to answer with two more goals in the period with a heart breaker at 20 seconds left.

The third saw a determined Rockies team take the ice and an unassisted shorthanded goal by Payton Wright on the penalty kill drew the teams to a tie. On the power play with 12 minutes left the visitors would take the lead again. However the Rockies were able to answer on their own power play at the 4:47 mark with a goal by Caileb Berge on assists by Jace Paarup and Nikolas Scheiwiller, again bringing the teams to a tie. With 25 seconds left in the period the Rockies would go on the power play with a chance to thrill the crowd. Alas bad puck luck would strike and the Rockies and their fans were heartbroken as the visitors would score a short hander with only 8 seconds left for the win.

This game would see Casey James Thomson put on a goal tender display for your hometown Rockies. While there was no scoring in the first period, both teams had terrific opportunities. In the second, Caileb Berge from Khale Skinner would give the Rockies and their fans a goal to cheer for. The period would end with the Rockies up by 1. The third period saw the Princeton team pressing and with 3:24 in the game they got a fortunate bounce to tie the game.

With the game in overtime, the Rockies held the edge in play and found the goalpost once. On this night though puck luck would bite again, as a fluke shot hit a skate in front of Casey and bounce high into the rafters and players on both teams had no idea where it was.

When it flittered down it landed behind Casey and agonizingly slowly rolled into the Rockies’ net – it was a heartbreaker.

The Rockies picked up one point on the weekend and moved into 4th place with two games in hand.

The Rockies’ next home games will be November 8th and 9th against Fernie and Summerland. Come on out and cheer your hometown team on!
