Invermere climate stikers raise a ruckus

By Steve Hubrecht steve@columbiavalleypioneer.com Invermere residents gathered last week in the district’s cenotaph park, carrying signs, delivering speeches and marching to the municipal office with a signature-laden petition, demanding local action on climate change.

The event on Friday, September 20th, was part of the Global Climate Strike, an event inspired in part by teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg, which saw rallies and protests of tens of thousands of people in cities spanning the globe.

Here in Invermere more than 250 people, including several dozen high school students, went on temporary ‘strike’ from school or their jobs to promote taking immediate steps to address climate change.

The crowd filled the cenotaph plaza for almost two hours, with placard carrying students encouraging passing motorists to honk in support, while local singers played music and then a series of local residents and politicians gave speeches on topics ranging from electric cars to getting leaders to pay attention. Once the rally wrapped up, the crowd walked en-mass to the District of Invermere office, where a large petition, decorated with an image of planet Earth, was delivered. Organizers vowed to hold similar events going forward.

“We had a really great turnout, far more than we were expecting,” said David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) student strike organizer Aurora Orchiston. “Definitely we’ve had a lot of people come, and we are encouraging people to come out again next week. We’ll try again next Friday, so if you couldn’t make it to the first one you can make it to the next one,” added student organizer Masha Stich.

Adult strike organizers Cam Gillies and Meredith Hamstead were also pleased with the turnout.

“We are quite happy. We were hoping for a large number of people, but you never know and we did have worst-case visions that maybe it’s only going to be 12 of us there,” said Mr. Gillies. “To have this kind of response is encouraging. I feel there is an emerging appetite for govern-

ments to take action.”

“Our goal was three per cent (of the Invermere population) — 100 people — because that’s the threshold at which change starts to occurs. So to have two and a half times that shows that this community is ready. What really moves me is to see high school students speaking and acting on this issue too,” chimed in Ms. Hamstead, later adding that the biggest challenge she sees to turning the energy of the strike into municipal policies is “the way we are (currently) making land use decisions and how we incentivize — or do not incentivize — (environmental) behaviour...We still make land use decisions that will have a lasting impact on our greenhouse gas emissions for decades to come. But I am optimistic that our community will be heard, now that we’ve come together visually and vocally.”

Invermere councillor Kayja Becker was one of three municipal politicians at the strike (others were Invermere councillor Ute Juras and Regional District of East Kootenay Area G director Gerry Wilkie) and after the event she spoke of her desire to carry the strikers’ message to Invermere council.

“It was really incredible energy down there (at the cenotaph plaza), you can feel the passion our community has for change,” Ms. Becker told the Pioneer.

“This community cares, and even if they are not coming to council meetings, we can’t dismiss this segment of the community.”

Ms. Becker cited, as an example, municipal efforts to effect a plastic bag ban, which have recently foundered because of a lack of volunteers willing to sit on a committee for the issue, saying that “I feel after today that we don’t need a committee, we (as a council) can make the decision and guide those (businesses) having trouble adjusting (to a plastic bag ban).”

Similar events in cities around the world also had massive turnouts, with tens of thousands turning up to strikes and rallies in major urban centres on every single continent (even Antarctica saw a group of scientist on ‘strike’), and more than 100,000 in several cities, including Melbourne, Berlin and London.

RCMP Report Submitted by Sgt. Darren Kakuno Detachment Commander Columbia Valley RCMP This past week, September 16th through September 22nd, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 66 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, September 16th, police received a report of a break and enter to a construction office at the Radium Hot Springs pool parking lot. Entry was made into an office sometime over the weekend and a computer and first-aid kit were stolen. Police seized evidence for forensic examination and continue to investigate.

• On Monday, September 16th, a visitor reported his black and red Specialized LEVO bicycle was stolen from the Radium Valley Vacation Resort in Radium Hot Springs early Saturday morning. The bicycle was electric assisted.

• On Tuesday, September 17th at 9:45 p.m., a Columbia Valley officer conducted a traffic stop with a red Ford Taurus on Highway 93/95 near Invermere. While speaking to the driver, the officer recognized the passenger

as a male who had outstanding warrants. The passenger was arrested on the warrants and, during a search incidental to arrest, the officer located a small amount of what was believed to be illicit drugs. The male was held in custody on the outstanding warrants and also faces potential drug possession charges.

• On Thursday, September 19th, police received a report of theft of diesel from a Village of Canal Flats dump truck. While conducting a scene examination the officer discovered that a logging machine parked nearby also appeared to have had diesel siphoned from the tank. Evidence was seized from the scene for forensic examination.

• On Saturday, September 21st at about 4 p.m., an officer observed a Chevy Impala drive past him on Forester Landing Road in Radium Hot Springs with a beer can on the trunk of the car. The officer conducted a traffic stop and read a breath demand to the driver. The driver provided a breath sample which confirmed she had consumed alcohol. Although the driver was not over the legal limit, the driver had a “Novice” license and was not permitted to have any alcohol in her system. The driver was issued a 12 hour driving suspension.

Partial-candidate meeting sees poor public participation

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com A meet and greet for federal election candidates brought out between 20 and 30 members of the public last week. The event at the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce / Lions Hall on Friday, Sept. 20th was pitched as a meet and greet with all candidates. Showing up for the evening were incumbent MP and NDP candidate Wayne Stetski, Liberal candidate Robin Goldsbury, Green candidate Abra Brynne, and People’s Party of Canada candidate Rick Stewart.

The meet and greet turned into a somewhat informal forum. But with no official moderator and itinerary, only a few formal questions were answered in the two-hour event.

With regard to why each candidate is running, Ms. Goldsbury said as a business owner, she has been “in the trenches” and understands the problems Kootenay residents face.

“It’s time that the Liberal voice is heard in the Kootenay-Columbia in Ottawa,” she said.

Ms. Brynne said, “I never envisioned getting into politics until basically I felt that the climate crisis was of significant urgency, and I didn’t see enough of the right kind of political leadership in Ottawa that was taking it seriously enough.”

Mr. Stewart told attendees, “I came out into politics with People’s Party of Canada because I recognized something’s wrong in our system these days.”

Speaking of his time in office, Mr. Stetski said, “You get the opportunity to try and make Canada a better country and you learn every day as a Member of Parliament because of meetings like this and keeping in touch with your constituents. So that’s what makes the job so special and that’s why I want to do it for another four years.”

Each candidate shared some key planks from their respective party platforms, and referred to their party’s online platforms for more details.

The NDP’s 107 page platform, Mr. Stetski said, includes climate change response, universal healthcare, free post-secondary education, proportional representation, and affordable housing.

“We live in one of the best countries in the world,” said Mr. Stetski. “But when I think about what Canada can be, when you look at putting all those things in place - affordable housing, universal healthcare, free tuition for college and university, proportional representation voting so every vote counts, dealing with climate change, transitioning people into a green energy future with good jobs, I really get excited about the kind of country Canada can be.”

Ms. Goldsbury said the Liberal party has already started on some “fantastic initiatives” but warned against

“It’s easy to make a bunch of promises. We’ve got an economic perspective we’ve got to consider as well,” said Ms. Goldsbury. “We’ve got dollars going to invest in Canada and Canadians, but we’re doing it smart. We’re investing in Canadians, we’re investing in all kinds of amazing social programs, and it’s working.”

Ms. Brynne said the Green party certainly had overlap with other parties on platform planks in areas such as health care, the climate crisis, and proportional representation. Ms. Abra spoke to the concept of strategic voting, saying she feels people are getting tired of having this conversation every four years.

“I personally think voting with our heart is a really important thing to do at this point in the history of the planet. But proportional representation would eliminate that rather silly and, I think, somewhat tedious conversation we have every four years in this country,” Ms. Brynne said.

Ms. Brynne was the only candidate to speak at length about indigenous issues and how the Green party will work on “true reconciliation.”

Mr. Stewart’s platform points had little overlap with the other three candidates, citing the need for a smaller, balanced budget over more social spending.

“I’ve heard some things that I don’t really agree with here tonight, or that concern me. When I hear the word ‘free’ being used by government, it’s got to be understood that government has nothing to give you that they haven’t already taken from you in the form of taxes,” said Mr. Stewart.

Voters deserve better than meet and greet

The federal election meet and greet event held in Invermere last week was not particularly useful for a number of reasons. To start off, only 20-30 people attended.

Blame was hucked back and forth, but regardless of the truth of who actually dropped the ball, the end result was that the event was not publicized until nearly the day of the event. No one reached out to the Pioneer and when we reached out to organizers, no details were sent back to us until after we sent that week’s edition to press.

So that was problem #1.

Problem #2: The Liberal party’s campaign manager assured the Pioneer that all candidates were free and interested in coming out. However, the Libertarian Party and Animal Activist Party candidates did not show up, nor did the Conservative candidate. Historically, this riding has always voted Conservative until the last election, when the NDP narrowly won by 282 votes. (The Kootenay-Columbia riding was created in 1996. While it has had adjustments since, the riding remained largely the same until 2012 when a federal boundaries redistribution added Nelson, Salmo and Kaslo to the riding.)

In the 2015 election, 21 of the Columbia Valley’s 24 polling stations (including advance polling stations) picked Conservative as their top choice, with the other three polling stations NDP. So, to not have the Conservative candidate at the meeting did a disservice to the public. Based on the history of the riding, and specifically the Columbia Valley, voters want to hear from the Conservative party. It was an unbalanced event to have Mr. Morrison missing.

Problem #3: This was originally planned to be an all-candidate’s forum, but was turned into a ‘meet-andgreet’. Then, at the meeting itself, an attendee was somehow tasked with ‘moderating’ the event like a forum.

While he interjected a couple times to make sure all candidates were able to answer a question, there were no timers and no set questions. Only a few actual questions were asked and candidates were allowed to take a lengthy amount of time to respond. There were also some unprofessional jabs that did nothing to add to the discourse.

While the evening was beneficial in that it put faces to the names, and it was an opportunity to meet four of the candidates, the Invermere event did little to add to the overall education of voters leading up to the 43rd Canadian general election, set for October 21st.

Hopefully residents were not relying on a formal all-candidates debate to make up their minds on where to put their X in this election, as it does not appear one is going to happen. If someone does plan another debate, let’s hope they learn from the mistakes of this one before going ahead with it. Voters deserve no less.

How about real change?

Dear Editor: Do any readers share the irony of stores and students creating signs for a protest supporting the environment that will become garbage in a matter of hours?

How about the irony of this publication’s own editor railing in two separate opinion pieces in the September 19th issue about climate calamity, yet seemingly oblivious to the piles of her own paper physically distributed all over the region?

“Stop fossil fuels now! It’s the frickin’ frackers.”

Hysterically hollering hollow hyperbole convinces no one and only adds to CO2 emissions needlessly.

We’re breeding babies, weak-kneed whiners, and creating complainers by encouraging protesting.

Sure, our nature is to create a scapegoat to blame for problems. We cling to simple answers because they serve a story we desperately want to believe. Sadly, the story we tell ourselves abdicates our own responsibility. It’s the other guy. They’re the problem. They must be stopped.

It’s tough to get others to care when you’re not willing to do your share.

After Friday’s local “protest”, was the park somehow in better condition than before the protestors showed up? Was it cleaner? Greener?

Instead of telling others what to do, can’t we try to encourage doing the much

harder work of looking in the mirror and asking ourselves what we’re willing to forego?

How about instead of making a sign, walk around town and pick up some garbage?

How about you give up your cell phone as it’s full of plastics, consumes energy constantly, and full of parts that depended on the petroleum industry for their creation and transportation? If not willing to give it up, how about committing to using only one full charge per week?

How about you walk to school instead of taking the bus or getting a ride?

How about you encourage your parents to walk to work?

How about you convince your family to keep your home’s thermostat at 15C or less this winter to reduce energy usage?

How about you convince your family to not take a family vacation this year in order to avoid plane travel and contribute the savings to the environmental cause of your choice?

Any takers?

Could we consider promoting the message that, with respect to the environment, as in ALL areas of our lives, nothing works until you do! Words without works are worthless.

Opening up the options Dear Editor: Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I attended the all-candidates forum Friday the 20th at the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce. I initially went to support Rick Stewart of the Peoples Party of Canada but ended up moderating the darn thing. (Thanks Rick.) This was probably a good thing as it made me sit there and keep my mouth shut.

First let me say that all the candidates are clearly good people that love their community. As I listened to them, the expected promises of spending, free medications, subsidized housing, etc., were presented by the three left of center parties: NDP, Liberal and Green. (Conservatives did not attend.)

The only dissenting voice was Rick Stewart of the PPC. His comments that these things are not free, but must be paid for by someone, and his comment “the government cannot give you anything that they did not first take from you” riled some in the audience.

Only the other comments from Rick that the PPC does not buy the climate

hysteria narrative and the PPC will cut CBC funding, raised a response from those in attendance. Other than that the crowd seemed fine with what they heard.

This takes me back to my opening statement. Trading between the Liberals and Conservative every few years, and expecting a different result, is insanity. I believe our country is in deep trouble. Canada’s debt is growing, our leaders listen to the UN more than they do Canadians, free speech is being attacked, mass migration has replaced immigration, our main stream media is propaganda for the left and political correctness is out of control. People that question any of these things are labeled as racists, deniers and worse to try and silence them.

Do your own research. Read the platforms. Look at the record of the past governments and see if you don’t agree that a vote to replace the current government with the past government is not our best course.

“great climate problem that we have.” He said there needs to be more study, and that media and scientists need to be unbridled to look at what’s going on. He also said the PPC would defund the CBC. A question was asked about small business support, with each candidate assuring that their party looked to support small business in Canada. Dropping taxes, capping credit card fees, getting rid of capital gain taxes and supporting local businesses were among candidate pitches on the matter.

The Pioneer asked candidates what are some of the key issues they see in the Columbia Valley through this election and over the next term. Mr. Stetski listed forestry including the lumber tariffs, the water bottle plants proposed and the larger issue of water in the region, and agriculture, before Ms. Goldsbury stopped him to suggest other candidates would like to answer too.

During her answer to the question, Ms. Goldsbury brought up the Columbia River treaty, saying it is an important issue that “didn’t come up with Mr. Stetski.” She also listed resource extraction, transportation, urban migration, and geographic fragmentation in the Kootenay-Columbia riding.

Mr. Stewart cited regional issues as the lumber tariffs, drug problems, and responsible resource development.

Ms. Brynne referenced her work on sustainable meat systems, cutting down of raw logs and shipping them off to other countries, the importance of water, affordable housing and the possibility of a light rail transit system in the region.

The event itself was not organized until after the Pioneer went to press last week. The Pioneer was told the event would still go ahead under short notice because all candidates were prepared to be at the Invermere event on that day.

Thrift store seeks able volunteers

When the Invermere Health Care Auxiliary Thrift Store moved locations a number of years ago, it made access easier for people dropping off donations. That meant more donations came in, which meant the thrift store could sell more and, consequently, donate more funds to the hospital as well as other nonprofit organizations.

Unfortunately, it also meant more comes into the store that is not sellable.

“We get broken stuff. Burnt stuff. Pans that still have food on them. Lots of people I think don’t realize we don’t have a washer and dryer, so they’ll just bring their clothes in dirty,” explains Sam Monfee, Invermere Health Care Auxiliary president.

The things that are no good for anyone when they are dropped off go straight into the dumpsters – the store has two dumpster pickups every week, with a third added this last summer because so much was garbage brought in.

But then there are the items in the store that have not sold after sitting on the racks for awhile. There are also clothes that are not exactly garbage, but not sellable either. Zippers that don’t work, stains that won’t come out and so on. Those categories of clothing are stuffed in clear plastic bags.

“Whatever isn’t going to be kept goes into recycle bags- whether it’s purses, clothes, shoes, whatever...,” describes volunteer Harald Kloos.

And every week, truck loads of these bags are brought down to Athalmer, where a giant 53-foot trailer sits waiting to be filled. The bags weigh an average of 20 pounds each, and there is on average more than 60 bags ready for transport each time. One day this past summer, Mr. Kloos counted 93 bags to bring down to the trailer.

“It takes a workout, because they want to fill the

trailer, so they throw them up high,” Mr. Kloos describes.

“You want to do Crossfit? Come down and do that!”

By the time a trailer is filled and ready to ship to Vancouver, it weighs a whopping 30,000 pounds. And these volunteers fill three to four trailers every year.

The trailers are owned by a company out of the Lower Mainland (Canam International Ltd.), which ships the material internationally for sorting into sellable clothing or turned into rags. The arrangement has worked well for the thrift store locally as there is no cost for the trailer, and it saves tons and tons of extra waste from going to the landfill every year.

With the volume of material recycled, the bags fill up a truck two times a week. Mr. Kloos says if they could find one or two more men or women to step up to help, it would greatly assist the existing volunteer crew. They can be flexible with dates and times.

The thrift store runs off an extraordinary number of volunteer hands – about 140 members and volunteers combined help to keep the thrift store operational.

“We have amazing volunteers,” says Ms. Monfee.

She says with volunteers divided into departments, it becomes a real social time as everyone works together to sort and display the new wares coming in on a daily basis.

She speaks highly of the people who donate too, saying even though they have to send so much to the dump or the recycling trailer, most of what comes in is good.

“We get so much amazing stuff that, to me, it outweighs all the bad,” says Ms. Monfee.

This year alone, the thrift store has spent more than $124,000 on the Interior Health wish list, and $71,700 for community nonprofit groups and projects. Over the remainder of the year, they will likely donate another $200,000.

“The idea is for everybody to be able to go ride together,” he said. “Our ultimate goal is total inclusion.”

Thanks to a $21,000 grant from the Columbia Basin Trust, CVCS is upgrading a kilometre and a half of the Junior Johnson trail (a green trail that’s part of the Lake Lillian mountain biking trail network). The investments means the trail will be wider and smoother – at least for starters – and suitable for anyone using an accessible three or four wheeled bike.

“It’s happening right now. The construction build is going on out there,” he said. “We are hoping to have it put together by the end of October.”

The current construction is only the beginning of the work on accessible trails Mr. Hoyne hopes to see around the Valley.

Once the adapted section of Junior Johnson opens, the next steps will be inviting riders out and asking for their feedback. Then he anticipates retrofitting the rest of

the Junior Johnson trail and envisions a network of trails that are open for everyone.

“Our goal is not to just have one small trail that is for adaptive,” he said. “Our goal is to have many kilometres of adaptive trails. We just need to start and figure out what that recipe is for how those trails work and then we’ll go forward... We’re going to continue to work and develop the trails that are in our area.”

Mr. Hoyne believes accessible biking has the potential to explode in popularity – much like accessible skiing has – and wants to make sure that everyone is welcome on the CVCS trails.

“I’m very much a person that believes in inclusiveness. It’s the right thing to do. I’ve got friends that are disabled, and I think that one of the biggest challenges for persons with disabilities is having avenues for physical fitness. It’s really important that we as a society provide everybody with an avenue for physical fitness, and this is just one of those avenues,” he said.

Everyone benefits when trail design takes accessibility into account, he said, adding that those with disabilities can ride with their friends and that the wider trails also offer more opportunities for youth, beginner riders and timid cruisers to get out for a pedal.

“Let’s start it and see where it goes,” he said.

Nipika adds accessible trails to network

Through the Greenways Trail Alliance, Nipika applied for and received a $25,000 grant for trail enhancement. When Nipika’s owner Lyle Wilson saw the standards for adaptive mountain bike trails, he realized the resort’s existing fatbike trails met many of the criteria already and, with some machinery, hand tools, “sweat and grunt work,” they will be able to make the fatbike trails into official accessible trails (trails need to meet specific criteria for grades, width, level of underbrush, roots and more to be designated accessible trails). Between about 10 km of new trails and upgrades to the existing network, Mr. Wilson said it will probably total about 55 km of adaptive trails.

Once completed, Mr. Wilson figures “we’ll have the biggest network of adaptive mountain bike trails, one of the biggest in the country.”

Mr. Wilson says this trail enhancement is definitely a community project, not just Nipika’s, and that it has come about strictly because of the support of the Greenways Trail Alliance.

Surrounding Nipika is the Cross River Canyon Recreation Area, the largest concentration of yearround multi-use non-motorized trails in the Rockies, according to the Columbia Valley Greenways Trails Alliance. The system is managed by a partner-

ship between Nipika and the Recreational Sites & Trails of B.C., consisting of cross country ski trails, single-track trails, as well as trails used by fatbikers, hikers, snowshoers, and trail runners.

Nipika’s owners were thrilled with the idea of making the trails more accessible, leading to a wider range of users that can hop on the Cross River Canyon network.

“You do get year-round use of the trails. We’re doing fatbiking trails anyway, and fatbiking trails are growing leaps and bounds,” says Mr. Wilson.

By stripping the trails down to the mineral soils, it opens up trail use for users ranging from accessible needs-based to families wanting more green (beginner) trails, to people that are not as skilled in mountain biking.

“Somebody that’s not technically competent on a mountain bike will have some really beautiful riding that doesn’t have the roots and the drops and the steepness,” explains Mr. Wilson. “And, we’ll have a bigger, beautiful fatbike system for all riders. For me, as soon as I read the grant application, it was a no-brainer.”

The trails will enhance Nipika’s existing accessible options, including a whole cabin built to commercial standards for wheelchair users, as well as the day lodge, barn, and two other cabins being wheelchair-accessible.

The Columbia Valley Rockies started the weekend with a home game against the division rival Creston Valley Thundercats.

The puck was dropped in the first period and your Rockies pounced on the visitors dominating early play. At 17:48 of the first, Nikolas Scheiwiller opened the scoring on a nice feed from Jonathan Milligan. Rockies up early 1 to 0. The play continued mostly in the Creston end of the ice and the Rockies were rewarded for their hard work with another goal; this time it was Jace Parrup on a nice dish from Khale Skinner giving the Rockies a 2-0 lead. However the victors answered back late in the first and it ended 2-1 for the Rockies after one period.

The second period opened slowly for the Rockies and a few mistakes led to costly errors resulting in the visitors netting 3 unanswered goals. It ended with Creston having a 4-2 lead over your Rockies.

The third period had both teams moving the puck well and plenty of chances to score were evident. It was a saw-off with the visitors netting one and late in the third Nikolas Scheiwiller showed he will be a impact player in this league with his second of the game. Final score Cats 5 – Rockies 3 with Scheiwiller being named first star of game.

Saturday night saw the Rockies head down the road to play arch rivals Kimberley Dynamiters. This game would have a different Rockies team take to the ice. De-

termined to show they were much better than the night before; a new grit was seen in these young men. The Dynamitors had 13 players returning from their championship team last year while the Rockies have 5 returning players with 2 of them sitting out due to injuries. This Rockies team though were determined to show the home team they were up to the match.

The home team opened the scoring in the first but the Rockies responded less than 2 minutes later on a beauty by Jace Parrup from his line mate Caileb Berge.

The home team netted one more with the first period ending in a 2-1 lead for the home team.

The Rockies evened things up early in the second on a terrific effort by Brennan Nelson as he was set up nicely by Khale Skinner. All tied up at 2 the teams battled back and forth trying to establish control.

Both teams are very well balanced which should give your Rockies some great confidence as this season progresses. The home team took the lead again late in the second with the Rockies shorthanded on a penalty.

The third period was a battle with both teams having chances but alas the only score was an empty netter as your Rockies pulled the goalie trying to tie it up.

Your Columbia Valley Rockies have two games at home on the 27th and 28th of September as they host the Fernie Ghost Riders on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and the Castlegar Rebels Saturday at 7 p.m.

Make sure you come out as you don’t want to miss the most exciting hockey around!

Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund Request for Proposals The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) and Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) are seeking proposals for projects that will benefit conservation in the area from Spillimacheen to Canal Flats utilizing the Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund (CVLCF).

The purpose of the Fund is to provide local financial support for important projects that will contribute to the conservation of our valuable natural areas. CVLCF funding is available for conservation projects that result in the reduction to a known threat to biodiversity. The themes for the Fund are water conservation, wildlife and habitat conservation, and open space conservation.

Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide value for money through partnerships with other funders will have priority. Proponents must be a registered not-for-profit organization, First Nations band, or local government. Unqualified groups or organizations may partner with a qualified organization. A Technical Review Committee will review project proposals and make recommendations to the RDEK for final funding approval.

Kerry passed away September 10th in the Big Muddy area of Saskatchewan where he was raised. He will be missed by his friends and family, especially Sandra and their two children, Katelin and Winston.

He was a lifelong left-handed philosopher, reader, writer, singer, swimmer, skater, hockey player/referee, cyclist and golfer.

What a beautiful memory she left behind.

Judith (Judy) Ann Palmer (nee Beckett) passed away peacefully on September 17, 2019 at Columbia House in Invermere, B.C. Judy was the loving wife of Harvey, mother to Andrea (Jake Jacobsen) and Steven, and grandmother to Cameron and Emma. She worked as an executive assistant for the Rocky Mountain School District for 29 years where she took great pride in her work. Judy loved spending time with her family camping, canoeing, walking, scrapbooking, and baking. She also enjoyed traveling to Mexico with her husband and friends. Judy was a gracious host to friends whom she welcomed into her home. In recent years, she was thrilled to cheer her grandchildren on as Cam played hockey and Emma figure skated.

Please join us in celebrating her life on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 11am at Christ Church Trinity in Invermere. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Judy’s name to the Columbia House Enhancement Society at www.cohogarden.org/donate.

• Minimum 10 years progressive experience in a senior leadership role in the public or private sector. Leadership experience in Municipal Government is considered an asset.

• Strong understanding of strategic planning, business plans and budgeting.

• Knowledge and experience in matters concerning relevant provincial and federal legislation.

God’s plan for you

By Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian Fellowship Church For the last few weeks we have been looking at how important it is to have our thoughts and plans line up with what God has for us: it is called having a vision. We have been talking about how important it is to totally and completely trust God in every area of our lives. We read in Proverbs 3:5,6 “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

If God is going to show me which path to take, I think I want to take it.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 tells us “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

We are being told to “trust in the Lord with all our heart”, and to look for Him wholeheartedly. When we do, He will show us the path, which will fulfill the plan

He has for us.

We have to be prepared to go where God is taking us; we have to be prepared to trust in Him to make the path straight, and we have to be willing to go. Jesus tells us in John 16:33 “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

David tells us in Psalm 27, the whole Psalm is worth reading, but here are a few verses: Verse 1: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Verse 4: “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.” The first part of verse 11: “Teach me thy way, O Lord, and lead me in a plain path,” and concluding with verse 14, “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.”

God has a plan and a purpose for each of us, a future and a hope, our part is to receive what He has for us, to trust in Him with all our heart, leaning not on our own understanding, and in all our ways acknowledging Him. Are you willing to do that today? If you are Jesus tells us in John 14:27 that He has a gift for us.

“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

Edgewater’s Legion Branch #199 was in need of a freezer. Mark Topliff, a Navy commander of 30 years (and also the bylaw officer in Invermere) offered to purchase one for the Legion. President Noreen Madden met Mark at the Home Hardware in Invermere and he said pick out what you need.
