Mayday call at the Fairmont airport

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Fairmont Hot Springs Airport is sending out a mayday call.

The society that runs the rural airport is looking for additional financial support to run the facility and says if they do not find it, they may shut it down.

There are three directors on the Fairmont Hot Springs airport society: one is Vivek Sharma, CEO of Fairmont Hot Springs Resort (FHSR), the other two are shareholders at FHSR: Doug Fowler and Dave Bessey. Even though the resort funds the airport annually, and all the directors on the airport society come from the resort, he explained it is not a resort-owned facility but is an independent, non-profit association.

The airport was built in the 1980s. The resort owners at the time were “instrumental” in lobbying the government for funding to build the airport. When new ownership took over in 2006, Mr. Bessey explained, they felt an obligation to continue the financial support.

The resort has spent approximately $2 million to keep the airport operational since 2006, Mr. Bessey said, adding they spend anywhere from $150,000 to $170,000 each year. FHSR is getting tired of footing the bill.

“We need to find funding or the airport is at risk of closing,” said Mr. Bessey. “The resort cannot shoulder the load any longer.”

They have reached out to the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) as well as private businesses in the Valley. FHSR shareholders are looking to have a decision made by the end of this year.

“It doesn’t mean that will be a firm decision, but that’s our target,” said Mr. Bessey.

Rob Gay, RDEK Board of Directors Chair, said airport ownership is not foreign to the RDEK; they took over the Elk Valley Airport years ago and partnered with a local club for the operations. Mr. Gay has met with Fairmont to discuss the airport. Next steps would involve discussing it with the area directors, and deciding whether to do more in-depth discussions on a possible partnership.

“From a public interest, it wouldn’t be something we’d say an automatic ‘no’ to,” said Mr. Gay, citing the heavy use the airport sees during busy fire seasons.

“It’s very early in it, but I certainly see that as a potential opportunity.”

Area F Director Susan Clovechok met with former CEO Pascal Van Dijk, then again this spring with Fairmonts’s new CEO Mr. Sharma.

“I’m very interested that the Columbia Valley retains this airport,”said Ms. Clovechok. “It’s an important community asset.”

She said the RDEK will need to understand the impact on the community, the costs, what possible opportunities there are, and then make a decision as a group.

“We need to work together to find a solution for the airport,” Ms. Clovechok remarked.

Panorama’s CEO Steve Paccagnan agreed that it is a “tremendous asset” for the region, and serves as a life link for air ambulance transfers as well as other emergency services.

“Panorama Resort is very supportive of working collaboratively with community leaders and local government to find a solution,” Mr. Paccagnan said.

The airport is used by a number of different groups, such as firefighting crews and equipment, Medivac transfers, and corporate jets. Mr. Sharma reports that in 2018, there were 104 landings related to firefighting efforts, 29 medical evacuations and approximately another 287 flights (a mix of recreational flyers, people coming to buy fuel etc.).

BC Emergency Health Services says over the last three calendar years, there has been an average of one air ambulance call a month at Fairmont, with higher numbers during the summer months. Over the 2018/19 fiscal year there were 16; 29 in 2017/18, and 29 in 2016/17. The majority of air ambulance patient transports are to a higher level of care hospital in the Interior, BCEHS reported.

AirSprint Private Aviation also flies into the Fairmont airport. Vice president Scott Wenz said since June, the company has had 13 flights to Fairmont, many of which are secondary homeowners looking to access their property. If upgrades were done to ensure consistent winter maintenance, Mr. Wenz said that would encourage more of AirSprint’s fractional jet owners to come throughout the whole year.

The airport has received funding from other sources over the years for upgrades.

For example, the BC Air Access Program contributed $59,902 over the last three years for improvements such as safety upgrades, electronics, wind generators, and concrete town replacements.

New build, groyne, and sundries at Invermere Council

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Christine Scott-Nyuli tapped her foot against the floor as she waited for council to rule on whether to approve a development permit for Generation Homes.

While council unanimously supported allowing her little community of 30 units to proceed at 606 10th Avenue, her foot tapping was warranted. Back in February council turned down Generation Homes’ initial request for a public hearing and asked for more information to be provided before she tried again.

At that time Councillor Gerry Taft said: “It’s not a terrible concept... (but) they should probably get their crap together.”

Since then she has been overloading council with information – down to

a display board with the paint colours, siding choices and shingles that each home in the development will use.

“There’s been a lot of great work put into this,” Mayor Al Miller said, with council members commending Generation Homes for the depth of detail they provided.

To address traffic concerns, 5A Street will be closed at the 10th Avenue intersection by Chisel Peak Medical Centre. The two-block street will remain open from the 7th Avenue access by Pothole Park but will be capped off just before 10th Avenue.

“It’s staffs’ opinion that the closure of 5A greatly improves the safety of the traffic coming in and out,” said Rory Hromadnik, director of development services.

RCMP Report Submitted by Sgt. Darren Kakuno Detachment Commander Columbia Valley RCMP This past week, September 9th through September 15th, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 66 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, September 9th at about 2:20 a.m., an officer was making patrols on Westroc Mine Road in Windermere when he observed a silver Mazda 3 that had been reported stolen out of Calgary. The officer conducted a traffic stop and three occupants were arrested for possession of stolen property. During a search of the vehicle officers also located a small amount of illicit drugs. The three occupants were released on conditions to appear in court at a later date to face potential property and drug related charges.

• On Monday, September 9th, police were advised that someone had spray painted graffiti on the side of the Canal Flats Civic Centre sometime over the weekend. Police attended and discovered the graffiti had already been cleaned up.

• On Tuesday, September 10th, a visitor reported he had been mountain biking on the Mount Swansea bike trails near Windermere on Saturday and ran into a piece of wire causing him to fall off his bike. The rider received medical attention for minor injuries. The rider described the wire as heavy gauge fencing wire that was approximately one foot off the ground and he suspected it may have been strung across two trees. An officer attended the area and could not locate any remnants of the wire.

• On Wednesday, September 11th shortly after midnight an officer conducted a traffic stop with a Subaru Forester on 13th Street in Invermere. While speaking to the driver the officer could smell an odour of liquor coming from the driver. The driver submitted to a roadside breath test and blew two “fails”. As a result, the driver received a 90-day Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for 30-days.

• On Wednesday, September 11th at about 7:15 p.m., police received a report of a possible impaired driver in a black Jeep Cherokee on Laurier Street in Invermere. Officers located and stopped the Jeep on Laurier Street. The investigating officer read a breath demand to the driver after noting signs of impairment. The driver provided two breath samples which both resulted in “fails”. The driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Driving Prohi-

bition and her vehicle was impounded for 30-days.

• On Thursday, September 12th at about 8:30 a.m., highway construction crews were clearing a culvert with a fire hose on Toby Creek Road near Invermere when the hose got entangled on a passing pickup and knocked a worker to the ground, dragging him 5-10 feet. The worker was transported to the hospital to be assessed for minor injuries. The truck was described as a dark coloured full size pickup. Police would like to speak to the driver of the pickup to determine if he or she realized their truck had become entangled with the fire hose. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP. • On Saturday, September 14th at 1:30 a.m., RCMP received a report of a male laying on the ground near 10th Avenue and 13th Street in Invermere. Police attended and arrested the male for being intoxicated in a public place.

The male was assessed by ambulance paramedics before being transported to cells. The male was held in cells until sober and issued a violation ticket for public intoxication.

• On Sunday, September 15th, officers with the Columbia Valley RCMP and the Conservation Officer Service participated in the annual Terry Fox Run. Next year the Columbia Valley RCMP look forward to challenging other first responders to take part in the event.

Oompapa at Oktoberfest in Invermere

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Noch ein Bier, bitte. It just might be a phrase you want to learn before September 28th, when the Valley’s annual Oktoberfest transforms downtown Invermere into homage to Munich, Germany’s mighty beer festival.

The phrase, in case you are not fluent in German (or Google translate if you are like me), means ‘Another beer, please’. In truth, you will not need German. The fun and festive Oktoberfest atmosphere will be in the air, but English is the Sprache des Tages (language of the day) at Invermere’s event.

What you will need to know is this: farmers’ market, circus show, live music, barbecue and beer will swill together to make one brew of a good day.

The whole Feier (celebration) is moving over to the Lakeview Parking lot, where there is plenty of room for all the day’s fun. Browse the market in the morning, then make sure to bring the kids for the afternoon, when some spectacular live entertainment will be provided by Dr. Von Houligan. This traveling variety show brings back the classic circus scene, with juggling, balancing, magic and more, all under the grand canopy of a circus big top tent. The circus tent is more than 3,5000 square feet, and stretches up more than 22 feet tall.

“You should walk through the flap of that tent and be transported to 1920s small circus,” Dr. Von Houligan says. “The chairs, the decor – as much as possible, we make it seem like it’s a whole other world.”

He invites people of all ages to come “escape reality for awhile.” Dr. Von Houligan’s Carnival of Calamities has shows at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Free admission to the show is thanks to the generous contributions by the Invermere Legion.

After the circus show, the tent will turn into Beer Central, with authentic live music

“We’re hoping people can come dressed up, dance, and drink some beer,” sums up Cortney Pitts, District of Invermere events coordinator.

What’s the worst that could happen?

This Friday there is a Climate Action strike happening in Invermere. Locals are joining in on on the international protest taking place in hundreds of locations around the world, with strikers demanding an end to the fossil fuel era. Advocates for the strike suggest there will be students, business leaders, possibly politicians and other interested parties in attendance.

Not everyone is on board with a climate action strike. If you are one of the people who still feel climate change is not real, let me ask you a question: what is the worst that will happen if we act like climate change is real, and it turns out that it is not?

If climate change is not real and we do nothing, well OK, then all this talk was for nothing.

What if it is not real, yet we act as though it is and work to make changes to our lifestyle, our government, and our planet? The result: we clean up the earth. We produce less emissions. We make smarter choices for our home energy, our transportation, and our lifestyles.

We source food more ethically, and closer to home. We leave a better planet for the next generations.

On the other hand, what is the worst that will happen if we act like climate change is not real, and it turns out that we are wrong? We make the generations after us suffer. Maybe in your lifetime or mine, we might not see a drastic change. But what about when my kids are adults, and have kids of their own? Am I really willing to take the chance that this is all a big hoax, and do nothing?

If we decide to trust in the science of climate change, and get on board with the activtists around the world demanding more agressive policy change, then at least we can say we tried. We give it our best efforts and hope that we leave the next generations a better future.

I would argue that, up until this last generation, every cycle of humankind has left a ‘better’ planet for the next one: leaps in medicine, transporation, healthy food choices, democratic governments - all of it has left a legacy for generations after. But if we do nothing now, and climate change is real, then we leave the planet worse off.

We have a choice. And in Invermere this Friday, people are making the choice to stand up for action.

As internationally-famous activitist Greta Thunberg has said, “There are no gray areas when it comes to survival. Now we all have a choice. We can create transformational action that will safeguard the future living conditions for humankind, or we can continue with our business as usual and fail. That is up to you and me.”

Praise for traffic control competency Dear Editor: The work to improve Highway 95 from Brisco to Radium started a couple of weeks ago and is now well underway. The work that needs to be done will be very extensive and at times very complicated. There will be many delays for motorists travelling that route and quite often pilot vehicles have to be used to guide the motorists to ensure that everything goes smoothly.

I am writing this letter to thank the people who control the traffic and ensure the safety of all con-

cerned. They are on the job at 7 a.m. each morning and are having to work in miserable weather and poor visibility.

I travel this route extensively and am able to see firsthand the high degree of competency of the traffic control people as they do their job.

If you are travelling up that way and are caught up in a delay, give the traffic controllers a “thank you” wave. They deserve it.

Who is worth what?

By Arnold Malone Pioneer Columnist Determining the value of a person’s work may be impossible. Who is worth what? We do know however, that a person’s value to society is not a measure that determines how much they are paid.

We are an interdependent society. We need others. Everyone needs our farmers and fishers. In fact, we need them three times a day. All human food comes from either soil or water. There are no other sources. We need carpenters, electricians, plumbers, mechanics, pharmacists, and hundreds and hundreds of others.

The whole list of whom we need is unending. Some needs are occasional like requiring a doctor, others are repitious such as a hair salon. Then some are situational such as needing a mechanic.

All of our needs are a part of our societal interdependence. We all need people.

Yet when we look at who gets paid at the very top of the scale we find therein a group of persons who we may enjoy but certainly don’t need. This includes movie actors, sports professionals, and TV personalities.

Kawhi Leonard has signed with The Los Angeles Lakers for $103,000,000.00 for a three years contract with an op out clause at the end of the second year.

No doubt Mr Leonard did create a lot of pride for Canadians and in particular those citizens in Toronto.

Nevertheless, $103 million for a non-needed service insults what we pay people we need or should need. When it comes to NEED I have never needed a baseball player or a movie star. Yet many of these people acquire a pay scale thousands of times greater than people whose services are essential for a good life.

Some of the most important jobs in improving our social structure are the very jobs that are underpaid. Daycare workers and caring for the elderly are worthy examples. Such people help

mould our children and provide dignity in the winter of our lives.

Many families desire a two-person income and there are a lot of single parents. Such people need childcare. Moreover, childcare allows a single parent to have a job that pays taxes. Then rather than being a drain on government funds they are a contributor. There are too few day care and senior workers mainly because their reward is unattractive.

Finding a proper way to reward people for their contribution to society is difficult. How does one measure the value of an engineer against someone who helps to shape a child’s moral values?

Who has the greater value, a farmer who feeds many or a doctor who cures many?

Some countries assigned a value to jobs and the governments set a pay scale.

That is a non-starter. I once was in a Polish souvenir store when Poland was under the administration of the, then, Soviet Union. I found an item that I wanted to purchase. However, five attendants were sitting in a circle while one person talked followed by group laughter. I think they were telling jokes.

I was unable to attract their attention. It was a situation unlike here in Canada where the customer is the foundation for business success. In that souvenir store, the customer was a nuisance.

Those clerks got paid the same irrespective of whether they sold anything or not. I left without a purchase.

I don’t have an answer for the huge gap in pay between our needs and leisure.

It would be wrong to destroy individual incentive for persons wanting to advance their own well being. Yet it just seems prima facia that paying a baseball player $18 million to play baseball is a reward too rich.

I am sure that you and I would play baseball for less than than half that amount.

The scene of a proposed project by the federal government that failed to reach local ears this summer. . . . ‘New build’ from 3 Lake Windermere groyne Council received a letter from late July at their meeting on Tuesday, September 10th that discussed the federal government’s intention to mark the Lake Windermere groyne, a shallow rock wall, with wooden piles.

Chris Prosser, chief administrative officer, said his understanding is that the federal government cancelled the contract with the construction firm and that he doesn’t expect the project to proceed.

On behalf of Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC), Stéfanie Hamel, who works in media relations, told the Pioneer via email that the federal government held consultations between 2008 and 2011 to see if anyone else was interested in taking responsibility for the groyne.

Finding no takers, “PSPC looked at either removing the groyne or keeping the status quo and leaving the groyne in place. Leaving the groyne in place would include clean-up and removal of debris and obsolete signage around the groyne, as well as the installation of yearround navigational markers along the existing groyne,” she wrote.

PSPC then reached out to a variety of local, federal and provincial stakeholders and First Nations about their plans to either remove the groyne or mark it. At the time, she said they received three responses “none of which expressed specific feedback on the proposed options.”

Funding wasn’t available for the project until 2019, but PSPC didn’t seek fresh opinions before giving a contractor the go-ahead.

As the Pioneer reported previously, the groyne work is now on hold due to concerns about lack of recent consultation. PSPC has committed to holding “appropriate consultations,” but there is no indication as to when those consultations might take place.

Housing task force Mayor Miller said a Mayor’s Task Force for Housing will start up at some point after Tuesday, October 8th, when the terms of reference for the group will be established. The task force will look into rental housing and attainable housing in the community.

Spill mopped up During an opportunity for the public to ask questions and provide comments, one audience member said he had been out for a walk when he saw workers digging up a tank at the old community hall site.

“Accidents happen and this petroleum fluid / liquid, ran down the road in front of the post office,” he said.

He wanted to know if the DOI had done an environmental assessment and properly cleaned the spill because “we all know what oil does to our water system.”

Mr. Prosser confirmed that the DOI reported the spill to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy, worked with an environmental consultant and brought in a vac truck to clean out the storm systems.

“Over 2,700 litres of contaminated materials were removed and disposed of down in Cranbrook as per the environmental legislation,” he said.

Merry market Also during the open comment period, an audience member said he is happy that the Invermere Farmers and Artists Market moved to the parking lot behind the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena, adding that now there is “a lot more room for people to walk about.”

Mayor Miller said the feedback he got wandering through the market was quite positive over the summer and that “everybody I talked to was very, very happy.”

Councillor Kayja Becker said she had initially been skeptical of the move but that she was glad to have proven wrong.

Slower traffic to continue Another member of the public said switching to single through lanes at the 3rd Avenue and Laurier Street intersection by A&W was effective at slowing down traffic but that he was concerned with the impact during busy times and when more visitors come to town.

Mr. Prosser said the traffic control is working well and that he expects to keep the intersection as it is. “(The traffic backup) looked scary if you saw it,” said Councillor Ute Juras, adding that she was pleasantly surprised as she drove in and out of town over the summer to find that traffic didn’t come to a standstill.

“It still flowed and it still moved,” she said.

Talking Columbia River treaty

By Trevor Crawley Cranbrook Townsman The eighth round of negotiations over the Columbia River Treaty wrapped up in Cranbrook on Wednesday, September 11th, as representatives continued to work towards modernizing a decades-old water management agreement between Canada and the United States.

Delegates from the federal and provincial levels of government, along with the U.S. and First Nations, met for the talks in the aq’am Community, where members from the Ktunaxa, Syilx/Okanagan and Secwepemc made presentations on the impacts of the treaty, according to Katrine Conroy, the provincial minister responsible for the negotiations.

“I think it’s great that the negotiations are back in the Basin,” said Ms. Conroy, the MLA for Kootenay West. “…In the latest round of talks, the eighth round, the delegations talked about issues related to flood risk management and hydro power, as well as ecosystem co-operation. To that end, on behalf of Canada and B.C., there were representatives from the three First Nations, the Ktunaxa, Syilx/Okanagan and Secwepemc — they made presentations on ecosystem functions and salmon reintroduction.”

The Columbia River Treaty is a water management agreement that was signed between Canada and the United States in 1964. The treaty stipulated the construction of three dams on the Canadian side — Duncan, Hugh L. Keenleyside and Mica — while a fourth was constructed in Libby, MT. In exchange for flood control, Canada also receives a share of incremental benefits from downstream power generation.

The treaty has been criticized for its lack of consultation with communities, particularly First Nations, when it came into effect over 50 years ago. The construction of the dams flooded approximately 110,000 hectares of land that impacted farms, tourism, forestry and Indigenous territory.

Ms. Conroy noted that the discussions around the treaty are important for future Basin residents who may be impacted by the renegotiated terms.

“I think it’s important, from my perspective as the Minister — and I’ve talked with [federal] Minister [Chrystia] Freeland about this — is that these are ongoing negotiations because these are negotiations that are going to affect generations to come, of people who live in the Basin,” Ms. Conroy said.

“Fifty to 60 years ago, when the initial discussions happened about the Columbia River Treaty, nobody was consulted. Nobody that lives in the Basin was consulted, the Indigenous people from the nation were not consulted and we need to make sure that this doesn’t happen again.

“It’s critically important that the voices of the people in the Basin are part of the negotiations at the table.”

Ms. Conroy added that the ongoing talks are going to take time and that a ninth round of discussions will occur in the United States in November, either in Washington DC or in one of the four states impacted by the Treaty — Washington, Idaho, Montana or Oregon.

There are two public consultation and information sessions coming up in the East Kootenay regarding the Columbia River Treaty. The College of the Rockies campus in Cranbrook will be hosting one on Oct. 22nd from 5-8 p.m. while the Jaffray Community Hall will be hosting a session the next day at the same time.

Valley Fitness Centre seeks new home

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com As the Valley Fitness Centre (VFC) continues searching for a new home – one that would fit its ever-expanding needs and those of a host of other fitness groups – District of Invermere (DOI) councillors said they would be open to offering up some of their land to help the non-profit organization make its wish come true.

That dream, according to Teresa Rogal, the managing director for VFC, is to see: “a true recreation centre here in the heart of Invermere, including gymnastics, including the climbing wall, including the mat groups.”

Those groups are already intent on relocating to VFC’s hopedfor building, with 22 fitness clubs attending an earlier meeting to discuss the possibilities of moving in together.

“In a perfect world, we would love to find a way with you – the District of Invermere – to build this recreation centre. That is our true wish,” she said.

But land was the only gift councillors considered offering when they met with Ms. Rogal on Tuesday, September 10th.

Councillor Gerry Taft said he expects that with the recent purchases of the Columbia Valley Centre ($10 million) and the Lake Windermere Resort Lands ($5 million) that council has already reached the bottom of taxpayer pockets.

Mayor Al Miller said: “There’s only so much that we can tax our citizens,” adding that in his opinion any recreation centre would need to pay for itself.

“It has to be an item that kind of stands on its own financially.

Whatever dollars going out have to be covered by memberships, registrations – whatever you want to call it – coming in,” he said.

Leaving aside the costs (which are estimated at $8.9 million and don’t include the land on which the building would sit), Councillor Greg Anderson asked if the fitness groups could work out an arrangement to operate out of the Columbia Lake Recreation Centre.

Ms. Rogal and Melanie Irwin, who was representing Glacier Peaks Gymnastics Society, said that driving is a dealbreaker for residents who would otherwise head to the gym.

Ms. Irwin said membership at the gymnastics club dropped in half when they briefly tried moving to Radium. Now that they’re

closer to Invermere, they’re back to bursting at the seams.

“People are just not willing to drive, bottom line,” she said.

“Once you get a certain radius from town, people don’t want to drive.”

Fifty of VFC’s members are well over 80, and many of them either prefer to walk or are no longer able to drive, Ms. Rogal said.

“To do something out there, out of town, is in our opinion an absolute no for our community in Valley Fitness Centre. We want them to be welcome to walk, not depend on rides,” she said. “A big pull for us to still stay in town was to really foster that sense of community and to have it be in the heart of Invermere so that we could keep our liveliness here.”

Land options proposed for the recreation centre included the ball diamond area on 4th Avenue by the CPR Lodge or the Lake Windermere Resort Lands in Athalmer. The old community hall site on 8th Avenue was ruled out as it wouldn’t have adequate space for parking.

Council members suggested that VFC continue working to collect partners, to build support for a new recreation centre, and to raise the possibility with Regional District of East Kootenay representatives as the larger community would also benefit from improvements in Invermere.

“You’re not alone in this. We feel the importance,” Mayor Miller told Ms. Rogal and Ms. Irwin as the discussion wound down.

Afterwards, Ms. Rogal said: “I’m feeling very optimistic, very excited, and I will be smiling all day.”

Her next steps will be “to educate the community as to what we’re doing and what we need and how it will benefit them so that we gain their full support – in and beyond Invermere and the surrounding community.”

Later that day the mayor said council moved VFC’s request for a community recreation centre into their top five strategic priorities.

VFC is offering more classes than ever this fall and is running a sale on annual passes, which are available for $425.

“This sale gives our members a chance to purchase their one year at a great price annually. It’s our thank you for being so loyal,” Ms. Rogal said. “It is also our biggest money drive for the year. Being at the beginning of our new fiscal year it helps with budgeting and planning.”

Travis Tagg, a Japanese jiu jitsu instructor with the Columbia Valley Martial Arts Centre, popped into the meeting to silently share his support. He would love to disband the centre and incorporate it into a comprehensive recreation centre in Invermere.

The day after the meeting, he said: “A family unit can all be doing something at the same time.

Right now, you have to run your kids here and then another does some different sport way over here and then good luck trying to go to the gym for half an hour because then you have to pick one up.”

With a shared facility, the whole family could do their separate activities in the same place with no one stuck on shuttle duty, he said.

Justin Relph, a Brazilian jiu jitsu instructor with the Columbia Valley Martial Arts Centre, said: “I think there’s a lot of benefit to having a critical mass – like a lot of groups together – so all the community can see all the different options all in one place...

For the community having health and wellness and sport opportunity is really, really important for attraction and retention of residents and just for the health of the community.”

Local climate action strike

Friday, September 20th strike in downtown Invermere

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Strikers around the world are tired of waiting for assertive climate action plans and are taking to the streets in what is called a Global Climate Strike this Friday, September 20th.

“Our house is on fire – let’s act like it,” states the Climate Strike website.

Climate change advocate Greta Thunberg has been a strong voice for worldwide attention to the matter.

The Swedish teen has risen to international fame for her blunt approach to telling world leaders, youth and everyone in between to take action.

“You cannot solve the crisis without treating it as a crisis, without seeing the full picture,” she said to the National Assembly in Paris this July. “You cannot leave the responsibility to individuals, politicians, the market or other parts of the world to take. This has to include everything and everyone.”

Greta is leading the charge on the global strike.

She has been striking every Friday, beginning in August 2018, in front of the Swedish parliament, to protest the lack of action on climate crisis. The #FridaysForFuture spread and similar protests have taken place throughout the world since then. The Global Climate Strike was planned to take place just before the international Climate Action Summit happening September 23rd in New York.

A local faction to this international strike is planned for downtown Invermere. Aorora Orchiston and Masha Stich, high school students at David Thompson Secondary School, are joining in.

“Climate change is important, and it’s something that we have to deal with before it gets too out of hand and there’s nothing we can do about it at that point,” said Aurora.

more for climate change, and the District of Invermere (DOI) too.

“There’s a lot of things that I think Invermere still has to do, like ban plastic bags. I have heard that they’re in the process of it, but it’s not fast enough,” said Masha.

Aurora agreed: “They’re in the process of a lot of things, but nothing is getting done.”

On the note of a plastic bag ban in Invermere, it did come up at the last DOI Council meeting.

No one stepped forward to be on the DOI’s committee to determine what to do with plastic bags. The issue can’t be referred back to Imagine Invermere since the committee was dissolved. So are we bagging the bag ban? To be determined.

Masha hopes that through this community strike, people will start to think about the issue more and that it will lead to action.

While they emphasize this is not an organized event, Masha and Aurora have done a lot of footwork to get people to come to the strike. Along with other volunteers, they have approached downtown businesses to see about closing their shops for some of the strike time so their employees can join in; they talked to their principal about the walkout; and they have reached out to friends to join in.

Masha and Aurora have both been inspired by Greta’s work.

“I’ve heard some of her speeches, and the way she says it, it’s just so powerful,” said Aurora.

Watching a fellow teen on the international stage has been inspiring to watch, says Masha. But more than that, “she makes sense. It’s not politician higher level talk. It’s like, ‘this is what’s happening. This is what we need to do. Get on with it’.”

Invermere’s Global Climate Strike happens Friday, September 20th from 11-1:30 p.m. at Cenotaph Park in downtown Invermere.

New site for Basin climate data Columbia Basin Trust There’s a new online source for people seeking easy-to-understand information on climate change specific to communities throughout the Columbia Basin and Boundary regions. The Columbia Basin Climate Source website—basinclimatesource.ca— was initiated by Columbia Basin Trust and developed by Selkirk College’s Applied Research and Innovation Centre.

“We’ve spoken extensively with residents and communities and heard they want to learn how to reduce their contributions to greenhouse gas emissions and learn how to adapt to climate change,” said Tim Hicks, Trust Senior Manager, Delivery of Benefits. “We also heard people want more detailed information about how climate change may affect their communities in the coming decades.

This website shares that information with great depth and detail.”

Through data, videos, maps and more, the website provides a one-stop site that helps users learn about how the climate is changing across the region (with detailed projections for over 40 climate variables), how this might impact communities, how communities are taking action and how people can use and interpret climate science data.

Rockies hit the ice for first season game Submitted by Brett Holt, president Columbia Valley Rockies The Columbia Valley Rockies took to the ice for a new season at their home opener. This team has many fresh new faces with 19 players that are suiting up for the Rockies for the first time. This team promises to be hard working and very entertaining. The lights were down low, the music was LOUD and the smoke at the players’ entrance set the stage for thunderous applause as each player for your 2019 – 2020 Columbia Valley Rockies was introduced.

This night’s opponent were the Osoyoos Coyotes and it was evident from the very first shift they were going to have a long and tiring night. The new line of Skinner, Paarup and Berge dominated the opening seconds with all play in the Yotes end and at about 30 seconds in a glorious opportunity almost had the home team up early.

The play was mostly in the Coyotes’ end of the ice and only for exceptional goaltending and a few bad breaks for the Rockies this one could have been over in the first 10 minutes. At 13:48 of the first the Rockies Power play delivered the first gut punch with a goal by Colby Phillips on a nice set up from Payton Wright. The home team, much to the happiness of the home team crowd, took a 1-0 lead into the room after 1. However 1 goal post and a number of terrific saves were the only reason it was close.

The Rockies came out ready in the third and dominated play in the Osoyoos end. The speedy Jonathan Milligan notched his first as a junior player on a breakaway that left the Osoyoos goalie sprawled out and swimming after a nice feed from Owen Hughes and Ethan Alvarez. A couple minutes later the line of Caileb Berge, Jace

Paarup and Khale Skinner entertained the crowd with their hard work resulting in a goal by Berge. Rockies up by 2. With less than 2 minutes left the Coyotes pulled their goalie and through a big screen manage to get one past. The game ended with the first Victory of the season for the Rockies 3-2. However it should have been much worse for the visitors. Final shots were 49 to 25. The Rockies hit 3 goalposts and 1 crossbar and missed many wonderful scoring opportunities. It is clear this team is going to attract a lot of fans and entertain all year long!

The Rockies on Saturday hosted their 6th annual Columbia Valley Rockies Golf Tournament at CopperPoint Golf course. A great time was had by many participants and all the players enjoyed time with sponsors, families and volunteers. The Rockies would like to thank everyone who came out to support the team during this tremendous event and the sponsors, organizations that donated prizes, volunteers, golfers, families and friends of the event. The Columbia Valley Rockies would like to extend a special thank you to the Chairperson of the event this year, Tracey McMann, for her efforts in making this a wonderful day!

Planning for retirement Submitted by Sara Worley & Brendan Donahue Investment Advisors, Manulife Securities Incorporated Many people wonder about their income in retirement. How much should they withdraw from their RRSP? What types of investments should they own? How can they avoid running out of money? Here are some tips on how to structure an investment portfolio and generate retirement income from savings.

Buy Equities Many people think that when they retire, they should get out of the stock market and buy bonds instead. The idea is that portfolio risk should be dramatically reduced when a person switches from saving to spending their investments.

This strategy is often acceptable during times of normalized interest rates. Today, with Government of Canada 5-year bonds yielding just 1.37 per cent, bonds might not provide enough to last through one’s retirement years.

Equities don’t have to be risky. In fact, many largecap Canadian and U.S. stocks carry a medium-risk rating. Depending on one’s risk tolerance and income needs, a few carefully chosen stocks, mutual funds or preferred shares in conjunction with low-risk investments like bonds and GICs would likely provide adequate returns in retirement.

Those who buy equities should always have at least 2 years of cash set aside in their retirement accounts to cover living expenses. That way, they won’t have to liquidate stocks during times when the markets are soft.

Try the 4% rule The 4 per cent rule is designed to help a person’s savings last for 30 years. The basic premise is if a person spends 4 per cent of their nest egg in the first year of retirement and adjusts that amount for inflation thereafter, their money would last at least 30 years.

Like most rules, of course, there are exceptions. Firstly, the math is tied to long-term average returns which, since 1926, have been 10 per cent annually for stocks and 5.3 per cent for bonds. Nowadays, the 4 per cent rule is

still effective, but would require some component of equities. Those who don’t want to use equities could instead take a lower amount, say 3 per cent annually, and invest in a diversified portfolio of bonds including domestic and foreign government, and corporate bonds.

Reassess annually Regardless of whether a person uses the 4 per cent rule or another method, retirement income should be reassessed annually. This is to ensure the amount is still adequate and to consider any effects of the markets.

For example, if the stock markets had a very good year it might be wise to shift some profits from equities into lower risk investments. If the markets did very poorly, drawing from one’s fixed income investments is likely a good idea until the stock markets can rebound.

Annuitize When interest rates are normal or higher than average, guaranteed-pay investments like annuities might be a good idea. In exchange for a lump sum, an annuity will guarantee a monthly income stream for a specific period of time, or life.

Another option is to buy a Guaranteed Minimum Withdrawal Benefit (GMWB) investment. These programs offer a guaranteed monthly income stream while allowing one’s money to participate in stock market returns. The program can usually be cashed out of at any time for the market value of the underlying assets.

Final thoughts While it’s true that too much risk in an investment portfolio can be devastating, having too little risk can be just as harmful. This is because being overly cautious could cause people to run out of money prematurely.

Moving from a mentality of saving money to one of spending it can be tough for many new retirees. It’s also common to worry about spending too much money early on, but rest assured, statistics show that people tend to spend less as they age.

Council adopts Radium seniors’ group

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com When the Radium Hot Springs Seniors Club applied to have their charitable status removed, they got an unpleasant surprise.

The group, which is still going strong at 38 members, hasn’t taken advantage of its charitable status in a decade and decided they no longer needed the formal designation.

But Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) interpreted their request to mean that: “Radium Seniors has wound up, dissolved, or terminated its operations” and sent the group a letter saying they will likely be required to pay back all of the savings in their account.

“If we didn’t get rid of our money, they would take 100 per cent of whatever was left,” said Phyllis Jackson.

The seniors group has around $15,000 banked up, $5,000 of which they intend to donate to the Radium Public Library and $10,000 of which they would very much prefer not to donate to CRA. “We didn’t want them taking all our money for no reason,” Marg Hodson told Radium council as the group asked to be adopted as a committee of council.

Mark Read, chief administrative officer for the Village, said if the seniors group became a committee, they could keep their cash, which would then be administered through the Village.

“They would lose a certain amount of potential control... (but) they would still basically have control of those funds,” he said, adding that the Village would “take them under our wing from a liability and financial administration perspective.”

In addition, he said becoming a committee of coun-

cil would mean the group would be covered by Village insurance at no extra cost to the community.

“I’m not seeing any downsides,” said Mayor Clara Reinhardt before council agreed to adopt the group, which she will serve as the council representative.

“Thank you for all the years that you managed the old hall and everything you’ve done for the town and how you put us on the map for carpet bowling and everything. Thank you,” she said.

Radium calendar pix and park plans Mike Gray runs for UBCM director role Councillor Mike Gray is running for one of five director positions with the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM).

In his material about why the province’s municipal leaders should cast their ballots for him, he said: “I am open to changing my mind, and even through this characteristic is (I think unfairly) used to besmirch some peoples’ reputations, I believe having the courage to re-evaluate my stance based on new information results in a more progressive outcome.”

The 2019 UBCM Convention will take place in Vancouver and will run from September 23rd to 27th.

UBCM topics of conversation Mayor Reinhardt said she intends to have discussions with Provincial officials at UBMC about Radium’s upcoming roundabout and about proactive plans for emergency services when road closures mean additional

traffic will be driving through Kootenay National Park.

Park progress The Village received a $33,000 grant from the Columbia Basin Trust to add fire pits and benches in the Reunion Grove area of Legends Park, which is by the Radium Hot Springs Centre.

Mr. Read said it’s not clear if Radium’s new rink will be built this fall, although work is moving forward.

“The key issue is whether we can get that concrete poured (while the weather holds),” he said.

A festival of hope

Dancers, elders, dignitaries and guests enjoyed the Shuswap Indian Band’s 9th Annual Columbia Salmon Festival on Saturday, September 14th.

The festival included cultural performances, an inspirational magic show where the audience was encouraged to believe in themselves, a story about how the First People learned how to fish, a salmon feast, a powwow and much more.

The festival took place fresh on the heels of an international Columbia River conference in Kimberley earlier in the week, leaving officials optimistic about the potential for salmon to return to their home someday soon.

Wayne Christian, tribal chief of the Seqwepemc Nation whose Indigenous name is Big Voice Who Speaks The Truth, gave a passionate speech imploring “all the two-legged, no matter what colour you are and what race you are... to pick it up because the earth is suffering.”

It’s our responsibility to bring the salmon back to the headwaters of the Columbia River, he said, adding that current generations need to take care of the earth and “clear the path for those yet unborn.”

Books for Kids Campaign aiming for $30,000

Submitted by Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy’s (CBAL) annual Books for Kids campaign raised $25,000 last year.

This year it is aiming to raise $30,000 for free books and literacy programs for thousands of children and their families in communities across the Columbia Basin and Boundary.

October kicks off the 9th annual Reach a Reader – Books for Kids campaign. Black Press, The Columbia Valley Pioneer, local credit unions and Blue Sky Clothing are all onboard to help with the campaign.

“Books are a vehicle to endless possibilities,” says Desneiges Profili, Executive Director of CBAL. “They

help children to be creative and explore new ways of thinking. Exposing children to new words and imagery through books helps to build early literacy skills. It is not just about skills, it is also about the emotional growth that occurs when a child reads with someone special. For children, books can be magical.”

While the Books for Kids Campaign is a regional initiative, all money raised in a community stays in that community, so your dollar has a direct impact on the children and families you see every day.

“Literacy is a pathway to healthy and prosperous communities,” says Profili. “When people think about literacy, they think about reading and writing. The truth is that literacy is about so much more. It is about hav-

ing the skills needed to be successful in a modern world.

For instance, being able to effectively communicate with others, read leases and use technology. By starting early, we can help to make sure children have a good start to a bright future.”

In British Columbia, more than 700,000 adults have significant challenges with literacy according to a Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) survey. Forty-five per cent of British Columbians between 16 and 65 have difficulties understanding newspapers, following instruction manuals or reading health information. P IONEER C LASSIFIEDS S OBITUARY S ALLAN CARON October 28, 1936 – September 5, 2019 Born October, 28, 1936, Allan Caron passed away on September 5, 2019 in Calgary, Alberta.

Because of his huge heart and generosity of spirit, he was known affectionately to many as “Big Al.” He was Superintendent of Public Works for the City of Invermere (19731984) and City of Duncan (1984-1999), and an avid hunter and fisherman. Allan is survived by his wife Shirley Frocklage and loving children Maia, Clifford, Bruce, Kim, and Pam. He was predeceased by his son Greg. His 11 grandchildren and great grandchild will cherish his memory. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. A Celebration of Life will be held at Invermere Legion Hall October 5, 2019 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Martial artists focus on setting egos aside

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com What if learning how to throw a punch means you lose the urge to raise your fists? What if knowing you could defend yourself means your ego doesn’t need to bristle when challenged? What if being confident in your abilities means you can diffuse a tense situation before it escalates?

“We’re fighting, but you are not learning to fight...

You’re learning a way to calm down,” said Justin Relph, a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor. “You learn really quickly that you shouldn’t ever fight. The irony is that by teaching everyone how to fight it really decreases the chances that anyone actually will ever fight.”

He and three friends – Travis Tagg (Japanese jiu jitsu), Jeremiah Breeze (kyokushin karate) and Ryan Karl (Fat Man Yoga and Pure Combat) – have moved the Columbia Valley Martial Arts Centre to its new home above the Invermere Veterinary Hospital.

All four of these men, who could likely drop you to your knees, agree that martial arts prevents aggression.

“With my sons (who are 11 and 13) before they started martial arts... they were always fist fighting, always hurting each other,” said Mr. Karl. “Ever since they’ve been training, they’ve stopped fighting. They don’t fight at home, they don’t fight at school. They’re just more aware, and it’s really neat to see the self confidence.”

That kind of transformation is a standard outcome not just for kids but for people of all ages who take their classes, the instructors said.

With martial arts, “you never have that feeling like you have to prove yourself,” Mr. Relph said. “You don’t have that mentality anymore so that if someone does challenge you, you’re not bothered by it. And knowing that you’re able if something were to happen, there’s no more fear. There’s no more ego.”

Speaking of egos, Mr. Breeze said bullies and those who might be set on learning how to take down a rival “are the guys that don’t stay because there’s too much ego involved... You get people who come in once and then don’t come back again because they thought they were tough and they failed and they weren’t OK with failure.”

Sharing his thoughts on male psychology, he said: “Every man who hasn’t actually trained or been in a fight thinks that ultimately if he was in a fight, he would win.

It’s just in their head. They just automatically think, ‘well I’ve never trained before but if push came to shove and I really had to, I would win.’ And then when they come and they train somewhere they realize ‘oh right, if push came to shove I might not win.’”

But those who are prepared to accept their actual abilities, who are ready to train and practice and grow,

“We do fight, but really we’re learning more important things like basic movement fluency, how to use our body’s efficiency, the importance of having a fitness outlet and habit in your life,” said Mr. Relph.

Students of martial arts also learn resilience as they work to master their skills, he said.

“There are great lessons to be learned by dealing with failure and discomfort and challenging yourself, and that is what you get in spades here,” Mr. Relph said. “When Travis is lying on top of me trying to choke me, that is uncomfortable and challenging, and you really need to find some calmness, be okay with that situation and learn to deal with that so you can find the right techniques, find the right movement to overcome that. It’s that sort of iterative process of continuing to fail until you realize or find the right solution and being OK with all those failures.”

No matter how unpleasant it may feel, failing isn’t terrible, he said.

“It’s literally how you learn. That’s like a designed process. If you are an artist, you’re very, very good at failure because artists don’t just immediately draw or paint a masterpiece. They iterate on that a long time,” he said.

“That kid who is in the Olympics has fallen 10,000 times.

They did not get this at the first try.”

Getting up and trying again sets students up for success in other areas of their lives – from their education to their careers to their relationships and their hobbies – because they learn the benefits of perseverance, he said.

“One of the great things about martial arts is it’s really addictive in how much you can level up. There’s literally no cap to the skills you can acquire, and any average person or below-average person is going to be able to acquire those skills and learn those movements and really be able to astonish themselves about what they’re really

capable of,” Mr. Relph said.

The instructors said training on the mats can also teach students confidence, respect and discipline while offering them an outlet for stress relief.

“You don’t have the time to think about all those worries and everything. You have to think about where your feet are in a stance,” Mr. Tagg said. “It just takes your mind to a singular focus.”

Mr. Karl agreed.

“It’s pure meditation for me. It’s really good therapy...

As soon as I bow on the mat, it all goes away,” he said.

Learning martial arts also comes with the added benefit of being safer on the streets.

“At the very least you can definitely run faster for longer after you come here for a little while,” Mr. Breeze said.

But at the most, you might be able to stop an attack like one of his female students did in Invermere.

“Out of the blue, (a guy) came raging at her, and she blocked that punch and kicked him in the nuts and ran away,” he said with awe.

It sounds very counterintuitive, but when you train with people who on a daily basis are training to try and break your arms or choke you out, those are also your best friends and the people who are most going to take care of you,” Mr. Relph said.

Members of the Columbia Valley Piecemakers Quilt Guild make the blankets. They did a few last year, and added to the total this year. Marion Portman made a few more this spring. She told the Pioneer it takes a few days to put the lap blankets together as she gathers up assorted materials like soft tennis balls, zippers, snaps, ribbons and more, then ensures each item is tightly secured to the blankets.

When asked why she does them, Ms. Portman said, “I thought it was a good idea, and I enjoy doing that type of volunteer stuff.”

Fidget blankets are known in health care circles as a useful tool to keep seniors’ hands and minds occupied.

Darla Spiry, recreation therapist manager at Ivy House, explained the blankets have been used in the hospital, in Columbia House and in Ivy House.

The blankets have snaps, zippers, different-textured fabrics, squishy balls, clips and more.

“Fidget blankets work to keep hands busy,” said Ms. Spiry.

Ms. Spiry uses the fidget blankets with residents as a Dementia therapy tool.

“It maintains dexterity and fine motor movement of the hands,” she explained.

There is no sequel to life

By Pastor Daren Wride Lake Windermere Alliance Church The entertainment world is awash in sequels.

Now, there have always been sequels, but what’s unusual today is that we’re looking at third and fourth installments of series which involve the same characters.

Some that jump out at me: •John Wick 3, with 4 coming down the pipes •And of course Matrix 4 as part of the Keanu-fest.

(Yeah, there’s also Bill & Ted Face the Music as part of KR’s domination.)

•Glass, which may not technically be a sequel but pulls together Unbreakable and Split.

•Terminator 4-ish, depending on your opinion of the other movies in the series.

•Star Wars Episode IX. I was in junior high when the original Star Wars came out and blew everyone away and

I’m looking forward to tying this thing off!

•Rambo Last Blood (hoping Stallone can exit this as gracefully as the Rocky-Creed franchise.)

•And of course Toy Story 4, the Avengers series, Fast & Furious 9, and for reasons I can’t grasp, a rumoured Now You See Me 3. Depending on your age and tastes in entertainment, some of these or none of these will appeal to you.

All these sequels and reboots have gotten me thinking: I’m not getting a sequel. Even if my 50 or 80 or 100 years on Earth are epic, I’m not getting a sequel. It’s life, death and then eternity.

English Novelist Rose Tremain was, as far as I can tell, the originator of the saying “Life is not a dress rehearsal.” Which concisely makes the same point I’ve been mulling on.

I’ve landed on two obvious applications: 1. Make this life count.

2. Don’t stick your head in the sand regarding eternity.

For me, I’m aligning with Jesus Christ because he saw both sides and said “Follow me.”

We have the very talented Angelique Gillespie and Colin Bell. Angelique’s pieces are a rebirthing of past paintings where she chose to explore new paint qualities, new surfacing techniques, and working with the pliability of clay; while Colin’s pieces dramatize his subjects through composition, light, and structure. Jaik Puppyteeth, Laurie Merlo, and Wolfgang Kunze join us as well with their immense talents. Jaik’s unique work highlights themes which critique societal presentation of mortality, sex, heteronormative family ideals, and childhood. Laurie’s abstracts encompass a variety of mixed media drawings that incorpo-

rate watercolour, charcoal, liquid acrylic and collage; while Wolfgang captures the beauty of British Columbia with his acrylic paintings which he does up on wood panels to create unique pieces you won’t find anywhere else. So come join us for a night of excellent music courtesy of DJ Ilija, and a cash bar that will definitely be flowing.

The show runs from September 17th until October 15th. Then on Friday October 4th we have our final artist demonstration with Angelique Gillespie from 5-8 p.m!

You won’t want to miss your chance to come watch, listen, and learn about the new abstract style Angelique is moving forward with.

“I have been exploring the depth of design integrated with referential forms of birds, animals, and people in an abstract manner. It allows me to take all the avenues I have explored in painting and unite them design wise in a personal voice,” she explains.

Windermere carnival fun this Sunday

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The third annual Windermere Carnival is this Sunday, September 22nd. The all-ages event features games, live entertainment, music and more.

As in years past, there will be inflatable obstacle courses, bouncy houses and games. There will be activities filling the entire school field. Coming back by popular demand is a reptile room where you can get up close and personal with cool and creepy creatures.

New this year will be a full-fledged laser tag game set up in the school gym.

Outside, horse lovers will enjoy the opportunity to pet one or two ponies that will

be on-site. Free on-site activities inlclude a corn maze hosted by the Invermere Public Library, a giant banner painting by BlackStar Studio, and some free games on the field too.

Bring your appetite! Rocky River Grill will be selling mouth-watering pulled pork on a bun. Hot Spot Pizza will be on site too, and Edibles and From Scratch will be selling tasty treats.

“It’s a great family event. It brings the whole community together for a pretty fun family day,” said carnival organizer Bridget Atterbury.

More than just a fun day, the PAC-organized event raises money for the Windermere Elementary School students.

“Every dollar spent at the carnival will

be going directly back to the students at Windermere Elementary” Ms. Atterbury explains, with money going to a wide range of projects and programming designed to enrich students’ academic experiences.

It is a massive volunteer effort to put on the carnival each year, with more than 80 volunteers coming together to make it happen, including Rockies players that generously volunteer to help make the day run smoothly.

Entrance is $5 per adult, $3 per child; children 4 and under are free. Activity / games tickets are $1 each, or a pack of 25 for $20. The carnival runs from 11-3 p.m. at Windermere Elementary School (4747 Government Street Windermere).

The carnival includes fun games.

During this process, the contractor will be setting up their flushing apparatus at each service access (manhole) in the roadway and releasing pressurized water through the sanitary sewer main Date pipe to remove buildup.

A bubbling and/or vacuum effect may be noticed in your drains and toilets due to this maintenance flushing.

It is recommended to keep all toilet seats closed and cover any floor drains.

Internal plumbing consists of “P” Traps, which hold a volume of water to prevent sewer gasses from migrating into a home. During the flushing process, this water could be drawn out of the traps. For that reason, it is important to refill all plumbing traps by running the water in your sinks and floor drains after the work is complete.

This preventative maintenance process is necessary to reduce the potential for a sanitary sewer main backup which could result in damage to property. The RDEK would like to thank you for your patience during this regular maintenance.

Please note: We would like to remind those residents with homes on the low pressure sewer system (homes with individual sewer pumps) to please flush plenty of water through your system prior to vacating the home for an extended period of time. This practice will prevent sewer odour from forming and releasing upon initial use after sitting idle for weeks or months.
