What if salmon were to swim again?

Three First Nations signed a historic agreement with the provincial and federal governments to look into bringing salmon back to the Columbia River Basin.

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com “Salmon are to Secwepemc almost like Jesus Christ is to the Christians,” said Mark Thomas, a Shuswap Band councillor and salmon advocate who has spent his career in aquatics and environmental science.

It’s nearly impossible to express how much his people lost when the Columbia River salmon swam their last, he said, asking how a culture can continue without the central unifying force around which to arrange its worldviews, beliefs and actions.

“You were raised in a certain way with certain values, and those values are what causes you to have an identity, what causes you to know what’s right and wrong, what causes you to make decisions on a day-to-day basis whether they be big ones or small ones. And so that’s what we don’t have. We don’t have those oral teachings anymore.

We’ve lost all of that,” he said.

“The environment and the animals that are in it... all has a teaching on how to behave. It teaches you about greed. It teaches you about sacrifice. It teaches you about how to be healthy, how to treat your children, how to treat your elders, how to treat yourself. Everything in the environment – and salmon being one of the most important – teaches us those teachings that allow us to be the way that we are. Without them, we are nought. An example of that is the Shuswap Indian Reserve. We are not who we are anymore because there’s no salmon.”

Salmon were so important to his people from time immemorial that even the Secwepemc name means spread-out water people.

“We went to where we knew there was water, we knew there were fish, so that’s then what we did since time immemorial. We’ve subsisted on aquatic environments, mainly on salmon,” he said.

Mr. Thomas can’t convey how devastating it’s been since the last salmon was caught in the Columbia River 80 years ago. The loss is so big it took him years – and his career – to begin to fathom what was lost.

“We had basically everything that is our being stripped from us, whether it be economy, whether it be identity, whether it be social structure, whether it be trade relations with other nations, whether it be our health, all of these different aspects come into play when we’ve lost our salmon. And it’s made us actually different people. It assisted in the assimilation of the Shuswap Indian Band into Canadian society,” he said.

The salmon were gone before Mr. Thomas was born, but he and his grandmother used to walk from the reserve down to James Chabot beach to gather mussels to make chowder. Only now does he wonder if she was collecting mussels as a way to remember the salmon.

“My grandma when I was growing up told me to leave the reserve. She said: ‘There’s nothing here for you. Everything that meant anything to us is gone, and you have to go out there and learn from them, learn what they know, because that’s the only way you’re going to survive in this world... It’s not going to be a life for you, so go out and learn.’ So I did that,” he said. “Ultimately I figured it out and went to school and got the accreditation needed to start making a change.”

While he devoted himself to being “the guy that speaks for the salmon,” he wasn’t convinced that he would live to see salmon swimming in the Columbia River. He even told his children that they might have to be the ones to “carry the torch” forward on behalf of the next generation.

But on July 29th, he represented the Secwepemc Nation as the Syilx Okanagan, Ktunaxa and Secwepemc Indigenous Nations signed a Letter of Agreement (LOA) with the federal and provincial governments to collaborate on bringing salmon back to the Columbia River Basin.

“The fact that we are at this point right now has just made me so joyful. My heart is so warm,” Mr. Thomas said. “The most exciting part of my whole career was the signing of that LOA. That same LOA sat on my table for 10 years.”

Developer promotes ‘active adult living’ complex

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Are you an active senior? Empty nester? Looking to downsize? Then Trevor Rempel wants to talk to you.

Mr. Rempel, on behalf of his family-run company Steel Creek Developers, came to Invermere last week to discuss what their company builds – apartment-style complexes geared towards “active adult living,” Mr. Rempel described.

Mr. Rempel wants to start to gauge local interest in such a development in Invermere.

“We want to get a sense of the needs and options, and look at what people here want to see,” Mr. Rempel explained of his presentation. “My objective here it to try and learn what the needs are here.”

It is just a general concept now, but Mr. Rempel presented some features they incorporate into each of their builds, as well as some potential design ideas. How-

ever, he emphasized, what is built here would depend on local preferences and more formal consultation. While Steel Creek’s developments are not billed as ‘age-in-place’ designs, they try to incorporate as many conveniences as possible into the suites to allow for staying in the homes as long as possible, such as higher wall plugs so you don’t have to bend down, wider doorways that could accommodate wheelchairs, two bathrooms – one with a shower, one with a tub – even the breakfast bars are made for shorter stools instead of bar-height so those with mobility issues can still sit at the kitchen counter. Steel Creek builds their projects with an intentional focus on community building, such as having a shared communal kitchen and living room type area where residents can gather and socialize.

A sample building Mr. Rempel described would feature 1,200 square foot units: two bedroom, two bath, open-concept design with oversized windows. The number of units will depend on the level of interest as well as the investment group, though Mr. Rempel said they typically target builds of at least 24 units.

Submitted by Sgt. Darren Kakuno Detachment Commander Columbia Valley RCMP This past week, August 26th through September 1st, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 92 calls for service.

The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, August 26th at about 7:15 p.m., an officer was making patrols in Invermere when she observed an individual she knew to be a prohibited driver driving a car on Athalmer Road in Invermere. The officer conducted a traffic stop and confirmed the adult male was prohibited from operating a motor vehicle. The driver was served an Appearance Notice to attend court at a later date and the vehicle was towed.

• On Tuesday, August 27th, a resident reported his Yamaha 9.9 horsepower boat motor was stolen from a property on Fairmont Creek Road in Fairmont Hot Springs sometime prior to August 15th.

• On Wednesday, August 28th Columbia Valley RCMP conducted boat patrols on Lake Windermere.

Officers checked approximately 35 boats. The vast majority of boat operators were compliant with all regulations and were happy to see a police presence on the lake. One warning was issued for operating a vessel without the required safety equipment.

• On Thursday, August 29th at 12:10 a.m., police received a report of an intoxicated male looking through windows at a residence on Lakeview Close in Windermere. Police located the individual nearby and determined he was trying to find the residence he was staying at. The male was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and held in cells until he was sober.

• On Thursday, August 29th at about 2:15 a.m., police responded to a single vehicle collision on Toby Creek Road. The driver of a Jeep YJ was driving from Panorama to Invermere when she lost control and rolled the Jeep.

The driver and two passengers were transported the hospital to be assessed.

• On Friday, August 30th at 2 p.m., police responded to a side-by-side rollover on Toby Cut Off Road in Invermere. Four females had been operating a side-by-side when the driver lost control and rolled the UTV. The

four females were transported to the hospital to be assessed.

• On Saturday, August 31st at 6:30 p.m., police attended a single vehicle collision on Toby Creek Road near Invermere. The driver of a Nissan Altima failed to negotiate a curve in the road and went into the ditch. The driver was not injured but his vehicle had to be towed from the ditch.

Columbia Valley RCMP would like to remind drivers that children are back to school this week and school speed zones will be in effect. School buses will also resume services. When you see a school bus with alternating flashing red lights, you must stop whether you are approaching it from the front or the rear. The fines for speeding in a school zone range from $196 to $483. The fine for passing a school bus with its lights activated is $368.

Remember that school is back in session this week; please abide by all school zone limits, and stop for school buses with alternating flashing red lights.

Sgt. Darren Kakuno followed up on an incident this spring, giving the details to the Pioneer in an email: With respect to the threats complaint involving DTSS that was brought to the attention of the Columbia Valley RCMP on March 12, 2019, I can confirm that a youth was charged with uttering threats. On August 8, 2019 the youth was convicted of one count of uttering threats and received a conditional discharge and community service.

Canadian government supports Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area for Jumbo Valley Submitted by Wildsight The Ktunaxa Nation Council has received approval from Environment and Climate Change Canada for funding to develop an Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area, up to 211,045 hectares, in the Qat’muk area of the central Purcell Mountain range.

“After nearly 30 years of determined efforts to keep Jumbo wild by the Ktunaxa Nation and people from across the Kootenays—and around the world—we can celebrate this major step toward legal recognition of Qat’muk,” shares Wildsight’s Conservation Director, John Bergenske.

The Ktunaxa Nation will receive $16.1 million over four years from the Government of Canada to map and assess cultural and biodiversity values, develop protected area boundaries, and more—with activities spanning from the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy in the south to Bugaboo Provincial Park in the north. The funding is conditional on negotiating the project details and signing a contribution agreement.

“The development of a Ktunaxa Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area in the central Purcell Mountains is a momentous success and critical step in protecting the plants and animals that call this special place home,” states Bergenske.

Jumbo Valley is a vital part of one of North America’s most important wildlife corridors and is critical grizzly habitat. The mountain ecosystems support habitat for close to 300 at risk species, include the headwaters of important watersheds, and contain old growth ecosystems. For the Ktunaxa people, Qat’muk (Jumbo) is a sacred and spiritual place, home to the grizzly bear spirit.

Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas are lands and waters where Indigenous governments have the primary role in managing, protecting and conserving ecosystems through indigenous laws, governance and knowledge systems.

Others jumped in with praise of the decision as well. MP Wayne Stetski said, “The years of hard work by the Ktunaxa Nation and many of my constituents to ensure Qat’muk is protected for future generations.”

Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Nation Council Chair, welcomed the announcement but indicated there is a lot of work ahead saying, “the funding is conditional on negotiating the project details and signing a contribution agreement. I am excited to move forward with the next step of this project that will conserve critical ecosystems and the . . . ‘Salmon’ from 3 According to a joint news release, the five governments committed to “work together to explore ways to reintroduce salmon into the Upper Columbia River Basin. The reintroduction of salmon into these areas, if successful, could restore fish stocks to support indigenous food, social and ceremonial needs and harvest opportunities for Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.”

His hopes renewed, Mr. Thomas said: “I want my kids to have the opportunity to show their kids traditional ways of life from Secwepemc people. I want them to see a healthy environment. I want them to see bears out of garbage cans and into the river, out of the dumps and into the river. I want to see eagles flying all over the place feasting on carcasses of salmon.”

Mr. Thomas will be speaking at the International Columbia River Transboundary Conference – which he called the “all-encompassing meeting” on the Columbia River Treaty and salmon restoration – in Kimberley from September 12th to 14th.

Meredith Hamstead, Director of the Jumbo Creek Conservation Society, also celebrated the announcement, saying, “the August 9th, BC Court of Appeal decision reaffirming termination of the provincial Environmental Assessment Certificate for Jumbo Glacier Resort was an important win for Jumbo Wild, but it left uncertainty about litigation, new resort applications, and the municipality-without-residents as back-doors for development in Jumbo. Nearly three decades of persistence, resilience, and collaboration by the diverse people of this region, including the Ktunaxa Nation, have finally, and justly, resulted in the possibility of true protection of the ecological, cultural, and spiritual values of the Jumbo Valley and Qat’muk!”

On September 14th, the Shuswap and Akisq’nuk First Nations will hold their annual Salmon Festival to “share salmon with the greater community, with the public, to tell people: ‘this is what we miss, what we lost,’” he said.

And it will be a time to celebrate what could be restored.

“I believe that my grandchildren and future generations will be able to fish the salmon once again in the Columbia River. This was the essence of our culture and life that kept us healthy not only physically but was the bond of our communities,” said Barb Cote, chief of the Shuswap Indian Band.

While Mr. Thomas will never get the answers to the question that’s lingered over his existence – who he would be if the salmon had never left – he hopes future generations will have their full identity returned if and when the salmon swim again.

“We’re connected to the land, we’re connected to the water, we’re connected to everything here,” he said. “We’re given this huge onus to take care of it, and it’s what I strive to do and I try and teach other people to do the same.”

Summertime success

It feels like once the calendar turns to September, the entire Columbia Valley breathes a collective sigh of relief. For anyone in the tourism industry, hopefully they are counting the profits from the last couple months of mayhem. For those in the service industry, the hectic schedules and hopefully days are perhaps behind them. For all the small businesses that fill our Valley, the chimes of the storefront door will be fewer, and owners can take stock of the season.

It has been a great summer, not only for the return of seasonal visitors that make the Valley’s budget go ‘round, but for other reasons too. The most obvious: no wildfires.

There were a couple very tiny wildfires that popped up on the BC Wildfires map for our area, but they were so insignifcant in scale, and out of the populated areas, that they did not even warrant a news brief in the Pioneer.

That, compared to the last two years, is newsworthy in itself. I cannot count the number of times I heard people say that wildfires would be the ‘new normal’ around here. After two smoky summers, it certainly seemed that would be the case. Hopefully, the last two years were a blip, not an emerging trend.

There were also no serious traffic accidents this summer. Given the heavy volume of traffic on our highways, this is no small feat either. Anxieties run high when it takes awhile to turn left, or to pass a slow-moving RV, or deal with an irrate driver racing past. All those can lead to poor decision-making and potential fatal errors.

While the weather made some people grumble, for those of us cooler-weather loving residents, it was a delightful turn to spend hours listening to the rain falling outside and splashing in puddles, instead of sweating through the sweltering heat. And we still had enough beauty-filled days to get in hiking, biking, and suntanning for our fill of summer activities.

We asked Pioneer readers to send us photos of their summertime fun, and you all proved that you know how to make the most of summer (see pictures page 2 and 28, one at the top of this story, and more on our Facebook page). No matter how you spent the summer, take a moment to enjoy what has passed, and celebrate the turning of the season. Congratulations Columbia Valley, we rocked another summer season.

Jumbo battle, 30 years on Dear Editor: Thomas Lovejoy coined the word ‘biodiversity’ in 1980. He now advocates that we not only keep and covet all our current, whole eco-systems, but we should restore degraded eco-systems. He says that will be a big help to correcting Earth’s warming problem. He says that wild places are in decline everywhere. Habitat destruction is the leading cause.

Corporations and governments continue to harvest the public’s resources from the various wild eco-systems commons. This leaves those eco-systems shattered and incomplete. He emphasizes the need to restore all eco-systems immediately around the world to correct centuries of destruction and degradation.

Thus, thanks to the still wild greater Jumbo area, Earth gains from being part of a primo functioning and huge well-established eco-system working to keep our planet healthy. The wild Jumbo is a necessary and vital part of a much larger eco-system which helps to keep that healthy and a perfectly balanced lay-of-the-land.

May 16, 2019 the United Nations’ Biodiversity Report says human activity has “severely altered 75% land environments. The loss of species is now happening tens of hundreds of times as fast as the aver-

age rate over the past million years and poses a dire threat to eco-systems all over the world.”

There’s a growing number of people aware that we are on a hot, dry and dying planet. This condition is now called Climate Change Emergency. The cause is excesses of carbon dioxide that is not getting sequestered for lack of wild eco-systems. Saving the Earth, scientists say, will be massive investments in forests.

And why are West Kootenay people so keen to keep Jumbo fit and wild? Because it is easy access for people here to be personally experiencing an easy and awesome mountain experience for a day hike or longer. Glacier Ck. road ends at the Jumbo Pass trailhead. Hiking to the Jumbo Pass is a spectacular experience with the huge north face of the Horseshoe Glacier towards the west and south along the way. From the Pass one views the Glacier Dome to the north near the Starbird Glacier. And looking east from the Pass we see the Jumbo Glacier leaning north on that face of Jumbo Mtn. All views are eye candy.

Be sure to sign the guest book in the hut situated a bit north of the Pass. To use the hut for overnights one needs a reservation.

Day hikers follow the trail to Jumbo. . . . ‘Jumbo’ from 6 Jumbo Valley area in their land claims.

Their sacred grizzly bears go to the Jumbo Valley to rest and restore. The Ktunaxa folks say the greater Jumbo eco-system needs to remain wild.

My B.C. government contact person is the Land Officer for the Jumbo under the Ministry of FLNRORD in Mtn. Resort Branch. He says that they and the Environmental Assessment Branch are mulling over what rights the Jumbo Glacier Resort has, if any, now that the 10 year deadline to create the resort has expired. Yet previous governments gave the resort proponents, Oberto and Tommaso

Heavy metal and aerial acts coming to ULLR Bar

Mr. Matthews said. “I like the fact that it’s different and it’s unique and it’s stylish. We’re a viking bar in the middle of Invermere, so obviously we’re not afraid of things that are outside the norm or a little bit eccentric.”

The stage show will begin at 9 p.m. and will run for an hour and half to two hours. Later in the evening a DJ will take over the entertainment.

“We just wanted to bring something a little different to the community that’s kind of fun and exciting and can meet the wants and needs from a large spectrum of people. You could be a 20-year-old girl or a 70-year-old man and still come in and enjoy the show.”

“September is considered the shoulder season, and we wanted to do some new and interesting things for the locals to keep them excited and to give them something to do,” said Richard Matthews, who coowns ULLR Bar. Circus Acts Insomniacs will be playing with fire and doing acrobatics at the bar on Saturday, September 7th. Two weeks later, Masters of Justice will be performing a Metallica tribute. Tickets for either show are $10 and will be available at the door the nights of the events.

“We’re trying to make this affordable for people in our community... We’re just trying to throw an event and make it accessible to as many people as possible by making the tickets as cheap as we possibly can,” Mr. Matthews said. “We just hope people come out and support it because the more people come out and support these kinds of things and events that we do, the more opportunity we have to do things like this in the future.”

Circus Acts Insomniacs – September 7th The Circus Acts Insomniacs will awe their audience with fantastical aerial moves. They’ll dangle from silk, twirl from a suspended hula hoop, gobble up some fire and do interpretive dances.

Masters of Justice – September 20th In another attempt to appeal to local tastes, ULLR Bar is hosting Masters of Justice, a tribute band to Metallica, after hearing an AC/DC tribute band called BC/DC rave about them.

“We got referred to these guys through BC/DC, and I know how much the community loves BC/ DC,” Mr. Matthews said. “BC/DC was a huge show for us so people in Invermere obviously love rock and metal music so we thought we’d bring in a different flavour of it.”

Masters of Justice will play “all your favourite Metallica songs,” he said. The doors will open at 8 p.m. with the show at 9 p.m.

Beefing up wildfire security

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Franz Feldmann has been a rancher in the Columbia Valley for more than 55 years.

With a herd 700-head strong, he keeps busy with life on the ranch off of Westside Road.

Mr. Feldmann and his wife bought the ranch in 1963. The third generation of Feldmanns are now farming the land, with Mr. Feldmann’s son and granddaughter in the business full-time, and other family members coming to help throughout the year.

Ranchers, including Mr. Feldmann, typically have their own land where the cattle will graze during the early spring and late fall. In between those seasons, cattle will graze on neighbouring crown land, provided to the ranch through crown grazing leases.

Ranchers have touted the benefits of cattle grazing for years. For example, Mr. Feldmann cites one study where one plot of land was grazed, another left wild. Time after time, wild game came to the grazed land instead of the untouched land. It’s called “conditioning”, he explained, allowing new grass to grow that is desired by wild game.

But now, the B.C. government and the BC Cattlemen’s Association are recognizing another benefit to cattle grazing: wildfire risk reduction.

The government put $500,000 into the Cattlemen’s coffers this last May, for partnerships and investigations into initiatives that will use grazing livestock to manage fine fuels.

“Using cattle and livestock grazing minimizes the growth of annual and perennial grasses, which helps to reduce wildfire risks,” Doug Donaldson, Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, said in a press release. “It’s one example of what we’re doing to reduce the threat of wildfires, while supporting the ranching sector and maintaining wildlife habitat in our province.”

Kevin Boon is the general manager of the BC Cattlemen’s Association.

“The last two fire seasons have seen unprecedented resources burn in the province,” he stated. “These events have shown us the value of agriculture, specifically cattle grazing, in mitigating the start or spread of fires while assisting in firefighting efforts. Cattle grazing reduces the fine fuels available for fires to take hold. This funding will allow us to develop partnerships in interface areas to help protect our lands, forests and communities, while producing some of the best quality food in the world.”

Mr. Boon told the Pioneer that while $500,000 will not go very far, they are looking to get a few projects launched with the funding, picking high-impact areas for demonstration and success in how cattle can help to mitigate wildfire risks.

“The 2017 and 2018 fires for us here in BC really affected a lot of ranchers and ranchland,” he reflected. “It became obvious, especially in 2017, agriculture, and especially cattle grazing, was really assisting.”

Mr. Boon said other FireSmart measures ranchers practice, whether for direct wildfire mitigation purposes or not, include leaving open space areas for cattle grazing, as well as irrigation that keeps fields moist and helps prevent wildfires catching.

This is a unique partnership between the provincial government and the Cattlemen’s association; Mr. Boon said it is the first partnership of its kind in Canada.

“If you’ve got these cows grazing there every year, you don’t see any tall, dry grass there. It’s grazed down to a safe height,” Mr. Feldmann said.

Back in 1985, he shares, there was a large wildfire south of Invermere. A Christmas tree farm used to have cattle grazing on the land. Under new management, the cattle were moved off the land. A campfire took hold in the tall grasses and whipped all the way to K2 ranch. Mr. Feldmann speculated that, had the wind shifted, the fire would’ve gone straight to Invermere.

Another fire in 1991 by the Toby Benches actually jumped Horsethief Canyon and came within 1.5 km of his ranch.

With increasing recreational pressure on the crown grazing lease land, Mr. Feldmann said he and fellow Range Patrol members have to be vigilant. This last May long weekend, they spotted 34 campfires that had been built on the crown land around his farm – nine of them still burning. Range Patrol was able to track down and extinguish the fires.

The government is definitely standing behind ranchers, evidenced by this new partnership in which they hope to use cattle grazing as one of the many tools in the Province’s reach to minimize the spread and risk of wildfires.

“Reducing the risk of wildfires and adapting to a changing climate requires more action than the status quo of the last 20 years,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture. “B.C.’s beef producers are well known for raising high-quality grass- and range-fed beef, and we’re working with them to find ways to combine that practice with reducing vegetation that fuels wildfires. It’s an intriguing model that I’m hopeful will become a mainstay in our efforts to protect our communities and resources from fires, as well as supporting B.C. ranchers and B.C. beef.”

With nearly 20 people in attendance, there were a number of questions for the developer, including the possibility of building units for ownership instead of renting, the cost and design of the units, pets, details on the financial side of the investor group as well as tenant rules and rights.

Steel Creek Developers has been in discussion with local realtor Barry BrownJohn, who is eyeing a potential project like this for his land south of Westside Park.

Though he said, “If the concept is acceptable in the community, we can identify other properties [too].”

Family doctors versus emergency rooms

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com With one doctor at the Invermere Medical Clinic retiring, Dr. Gareth Mannheimer said the clinic is not currently “attaching” to any new patients. While those without a family doctor will stay that way for the time being, he said the clinic still offers around 15 appointments a day “to assist with orphaned patients who require acute care.”

Chisel Peak Medical Clinic isn’t adopting new patients either.

While there are nine family doctors working in Invermere, the East Kootenay Division of Family Practice doesn’t keep track of how many Invermere residents have family doctors. According to their general practices services committee, both the patient and the healthcare system benefit when an individual has a family doctor.

“Access to a family doctor leads to stronger, more accessible, primary care for British Columbians. Family physicians know their patient’s medical history and family history, can manage most healthcare issues, and can help navigate the healthcare system when necessary. Having a family doctor can result in better personal health and cost savings to the healthcare system,” the committee said in a response Interior Health collected for the Pioneer.

In contrast, the committee said not having a family doctor can result in more hospital stays for those with chronic conditions, more emergency-room visits and more expenses.

Deborah Austin, an area director for Interior Health, said anyone in need of medical care can go to the hospital if they can’t wait to see a doctor. Their other options are to visit their local pharmacist if they need an emergency prescription refill or to call HealthLink (by dialing 811) to speak with a nurse, dietitian or pharmacist at any time of the day or night.

“We never discourage people from coming to the (emergency department) if they feel they need to see a physician. This is something only the individual can decide,” she said. “We have a high number of patients who come to the Emergency because there is not a walk-in clinic. They need to see a doctor so this is their option if they don’t have a family physician or can’t get an appointment for a week or two.”

Because the hospital treats the sickest patients first, the wait for those who are not as ill could be up to five hours during an especially busy period, she said.

The Regional District of East Kootenay is directing $20,000 to the 2019 Columbia Valley Physician Recruitment Initiative to address the shortage of doctors in hopes others will also be able to attach to a family doctor of their own.

This makes sense, as investing can be an emotional endeavor. Here are some common behavioral biases people make, and ways to avoid them.

Overconfidence Perhaps the most common behavioral finance concept, overconfidence occurs when people place too much confidence in their ability to predict the outcomes of their investment decisions.

While it’s important to invest confidently, applying too much can result in frequent and unprofitable trading habits or a portfolio that is overly concentrated in particular types of stocks, and thus susceptible to higher levels of volatility.

Loss Aversion Tied to overconfidence, loss aversion is the reluctance to accept a loss, or the desire to book a positive return regardless of other factors. For example, a person experiencing loss aversion may decide to hold on to a losing investment because he or she hopes that it might one day recover, even if unrealistic. Or, one might decide to “double down” on a losing stock in the hope that the share price will at least partially recover.

In reality, the act of “doubling-down” can be akin to a gambling, for example, continuing to make large bets in the hope of breaking even. Sometimes, accepting a loss and moving on is the best course of action.

Frame Dependence The tendency to change one’s risk tolerance based on the direction of the market has been a common phenomenon over the past several years. Low interest rates coupled with high returns in the stock markets have caused many conservative investors to take on more risk.

The problem is, while some people feel their risk tolerance rising along with the markets, they also feel their ability to tolerate risk falling with the markets. This

makes investing an emotional activity, frequently resulting in buying high and selling low.

Though it can be hard to keep in mind, one’s risk tolerance should be based on their personal financial circumstances and investment time horizon, not the direction of the markets.

Representativeness In behavioral finance, representativeness is most often defined as thinking that one thing means something else. This can take many forms but there are two facets which stand out.

The first is assuming that a stock must be a good investment because their company produces good products. Consider Crocs shoes, who went public in 2006 and quickly shot up to $75 per share, only to crash down to $1 less than a year later. In this case, owning shares of Crocs was decidedly less comfortable than wearing their shoes.

The second aspect involves placing too much focus on the past. This includes past performance, and the belief that one strategy or stock will always do well under all market conditions.

Many people currently hold this belief due to the superior performance of dividend-paying stocks of Canadian companies over the past 6 years. Many dividend-payers, however, are currently trading at unsustainable valuations, and may not be a good investment for new money.

Regret Minimization Everybody wants to feel that they made a good decision. Some people struggle with feeling they, or their advisor, could have done better. Some people invest very conservatively, or avoid investing altogether, because they don’t want to feel the regret of an imperfect decision.

For example, a person sells a stock at a profit, but the shares keep going up. Many people would feel happy that they made a profit, but others would be unable to see past imperfect timing. It’s important to realise and accept that nobody is perfect and very few people are ever lucky enough to have timed the market perfectly.

On the whole, understanding how psychology plays a role in decision-making can help people and their advisors minimize investing errors and create better portfolios.

The great garlic

By Lin Steedman Windermere and edible Acres Farm and Cafe Did you know that to grow the best, long lasting garlic you have to plant it in the fall each year? There are many steps to growing garlic, but the end result is satisfying, delicious and nutritious.

We get many customers in the fall seeking garlic planting advice, so here are a few tip, tricks and varieties we grow in Windermere.

We grew 18 varieties this past season and they are all certified organic. Our garlic is high quality and can be used as seed garlic and planting in the fall.

There are many different kinds of garlic but our most popular garlics are hard neck garlic which throw a garlic scape in the spring and need to be snapped off in order to put energy into bulb production. We grow 5 Purple Stripes, 5 Porcelains, 3 Rocamboles, 3 Asiatic, 1 Marbled Purple Stripe and 1 Softneck.

In our experience the best time to plant garlic in the Columbia Valley is between the

last week of September to the second week of October. You want to prep your beds by loosening the soil, adding some compost and/or manure and mixing it in well. Crack garlic bulbs open, trying to leave as much wrapper around each bulb as possible. Space your garlic bulbs about 6-8 inches apart, 1-2 inches deep with the blunt end (where roots look to be) down in the soil and the pointy top sticking up. This will help your garlic plants to grow straight and make for a more uniform bulb formation next spring. Water your freshly planted garlic well and don’t forget to mulch it. You will have more success with your spring 2020 crop if you give it that winter insulation and protection.

Garlic has different storage lengths depending on variety and where you are able to store them. Ideally, they are kept in a cool, dark and dry location for the longest storage life, not in the fridge.

The 6th annual Columbia Valley Rockies golf tournament takes place Saturday, September 14th at Copper Point Golf Club’s Ridge Course.

The tournament is a great opportunity to not only play a fun round of golf, but support our local Junior B hockey team at the same time. Tickets are $100, a great deal considering you get a round of golf, cart, and wrap-up dinner. The tournament includes hole-in-one prizes, fun competitions, and a silent auction. Check in is at 1:30 p.m., with a shotgun start at 2 p.m. All proceeds go towards the 2019/2020 season. Brett Holt, president of the Columbia Valley Rockies Junior Hockey Club, says this is a tournament not to miss.

As the seasons change so do your car care needs. Cold weather is hard on your vehicle, everything from the engine, tires, battery to the brakes. Let us get your vehicle ready for winter. Below are just a few of the items that need to be checked/ maintained to gear your vehicle up for winter.

Tires are an integral part of vehicle safety! They are the only point of contact your vehicle has with the road. Properly mounted and balanced tires help to ensure you receive the maximum comfort, tread life, and security that quality tires can deliver.

There are many factors to look at when purchasing new tires. What are your personal driving habits? What are you using the vehicle for? The answers to these questions help us, help you, choose the best tire for your needs. There are some things you can do at home to maintain tire life. It is important to check tire pressure monthly to ensure the current inflation matches the specifications of your vehicle. Improperly maintained tires and TPMS could result in some detrimental effects on your vehicle’s performance and overall safety such as; irregular tire wear, possible tire failure, reduced fuel economy and decreased handling characteristics of your vehicle.

Did you know your car battery can suffer in cold weather? A typical battery can lose voltage at -1° C. A vehicle’s electrical system has three primary components: a battery, starter, and an alternator.

All three of these elements need to work

together to start and run your car. Routine inspections of the battery, checking the voltage and amperage output or checking for damaged or corroded cables is only part of verifying the charging circuit is in top shape.

A dirty air filter restricts the flow of air into your engine and can cause fuel economy to drop up to 15% or more. Air filters should be replaced at least once per year to ensure the free delivery of clean air to your engine.

Fuel filters can become contaminated with water or restricted by other particles causing other fuel delivery components to work harder to sustain fuel pressure.

Late model vehicles have sealed filters that cannot be inspected and therefore must be replaced at the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended replacement interval. Cabin air filters were introduced in the last decade to enhance the quality of the air inside your vehicle’s cabin. These filters remove particles, bacteria, and other items harmful to human respiratory systems.

They can also reduce the impact of reactions to people suffering from allergies.

Windshield wiper blades fail in freezing temperatures. Make sure you are cleaning the ice off your windshield with a window scraper/brush so your wipers don’t wear out faster than necessary.

Regular maintenance such as services, alignments and preventative measures can help make sure that a small problem does not turn into an extensive and costly repair.

Library endowment fund receives legacy gift

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Dr. Rod Conklin, who passed away in June, will give to the Radium Public Library into perpetuity through the endowment fund a gift in his honour helped to establish.

Dee Conklin donated $5,000 to the fund in memory of her beloved, who spent his career as an educator, starting as a high school teacher before spending 30 years as a professor at the University of Calgary. He also co-founded a school in Calgary called Rundle College.

“When he started (Rundle College), it was all about helping students discover their potential and challenging them to attain their best and celebrating with them when they did,” Dee said.

Living near the Radium Hot Springs Centre, home to the new and improved library, she and Rod would watch people going into the building all the time.

“Once this new library was built a year or so ago, my goodness he fell in love with it,” she said. “The whole place of learning for him was super important.”

The pair knew about the library’s intention to establish an endowment fund and had discussed leaving a legacy gift when Rod passed on.

“As a legacy, it’s a wonderful way to give back,” Dee said.

Their gift was doubly wonderful as it allowed the library to surpass the $10,000 minimum requirement to get the fund going.

Now that the fund exists, Laurie Klassen, executive director of the Columbia Valley Community Foundation, said it will be invested and will provide 4.5 per

cent back to the library in interest each year.

“This will give a sustainable stream of income forever,” she said.

Because only the money that the investment accumulates is spent, she said the endowment fund offers donors “a real peace of mind that their gift will give forever, and it won’t be just frittered away.”

The interest from the fund will be used to hold more events at the library, from bringing in more authors and performers to establishing long-term programming, said library director Jacqueline Wagner, adding that it will allow the library to “maintain our programming and amp it up a bit.”

The funding will also allow Dee to find some sweetness in the midst of her loss.

“Every time I go to the library, I’ll think of him,” she said. “The day we met is the day we knew we were together forever... The moment I met him it was so instant... like within six weeks we were moving in together.”

The love that started so quickly held steady to the end.

“Not that many people ever find what I would consider true love, and I do believe we had it. It was pretty special,” she said. “He supported me in everything I ever did.”

And she was pleased to honour his memory with a gift to the library.

“People come and go. We all know that, but if you can leave something behind in their memory – whether it be a park bench or it be something where their name is always there – I know my husband will always be at the library,” she said.

Youth crews help with bats, invasive species and wildlife

Throughout the summer young people are working hard to care for conservation lands as part of The Nature Trust of BC Conservation Youth Crews.

“I wanted to continue on my conservation career path and expand my skills in the field. I was ready to explore a new part of Canada and I knew that the position was going to bring me an amazing experience,” says Amelia Bonenfant, Kootenay crew member.

The Nature Trust of British Columbia hires young people each summer to tackle activities on conservation lands across the province and learn valuable skills for future employment. Training includes First Aid and Bear Aware as well as the safe handling of power tools. The crews perform on-the-ground work as well as attending workshops from specialists in the field on topics such as bird counts, and forest ecology.

“My favourite activity was restoration work on properties, whether it included invasive plant removal, seeding, planting or maintenance. It feels good to be doing something to enhance wildlife habitat quality,” says Amelia.

When asked about the most challenging thing she’s had to do on the crew, Amelia explains, “Tackling invasive species in the heat and in isolated areas. For example, one of our properties in the West Kootenay had invasive thistle with patches imbedded in a deep wetland. We had to hike in with our brush saws and personal protection equipment through rough terrain with weeds seven feet tall holding us back.”

The crews contribute to the local community in a variety of ways.

“I helped host a bat education and box building workshop for the community on one of The Nature Trust’s new properties. With the help of a bat biologist and the local rod and gun club, we debunked bat myths and taught the public about the importance of bats.”

Hockey Hall of Famer settles in the Valley

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com A miniature Stanley Cup sits perched between two candles on the highest shelf in Scotty Morrison’s suite at Columbia Garden Village.

Mr. Morrison has never filled his honorary replica with a celebratory beverage, nor defiled it in any of the ways he’s heard of the original cup being treated by those victors who’ve filled it with everything from a stripper to the fixings for a family dinner.

Growing up in Montreal, hockey was more than a game for Mr. Morrison. It was a way of life that he was inducted to when he was around four years old.

“Way back then there were so many outdoor rinks.

You know, just the natural ice. I could come home from school and – never mind about homework or anything – I’d just put my skates on, get my gloves and a hockey stick and go over just to the next corner,” he said. “That took place until it was pitch black and then you’d come home for dinner.”

Mr. Morrison was playing junior hockey and rising in the ranks until a semifinal game when he was told to cover Jean Beliveau, who went on to play for the Montreal Canadians and to win the Stanley Cup 10 times.

In their junior hockey semifinal, Mr. Beliveau earned

a hat trick and gave a few assists, while Mr. Morrison earned a demotion.

That game was “the funniest part” of his hockey legacy, he said, adding that his coaches “could see that I was never going to be a professional hockey player.”

Far from giving up the sport he loved, Mr. Morrison decided to change his role and become a professional referee. In 1954 he became the youngest referee to go into the National Hockey League (NHL). Later, as the NHL’s Referee-in-Chief, he was responsible for reffing other referees.

Mr. Morrison later become the president of the Hockey Hall of Fame. In 1999, he was inducted into the hall, along with another referee and “the great one” Wayne Gretzky.

When Mr. Morrison met his late wife on a plane – she was the flight attendant – he naturally invited her to catch a hockey game with him.

With nine of his 26 grandchildren living out west, he and the Stanley Cup model he received for his service moved to the Valley last winter.

He won’t referee the Columbia Valley Rockies as he’s traded in his skates for a walker these days, but he is looking forward to watching from the stands as another generation of players takes to the ice.

Patio pitchoff Copper Point Golf Course ran a Patio Pitchoff competition every Friday through the season. Half the money collected goes to an award for a graduating student from David Thompson Secondary School. This year, Copper Point’s pitchoff raised $2,500 for the fund.

Leadership – Mahatma Gandhi Style

By Fr. Jojo Augustin St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Indian Nation and apostle of non-violence, was one of the most influential figures of the 20th century. Through his unconventional leadership and adherence to truth and non-violence, he fought the mighty British Empire and won independence for India in 1947. One of the most striking features of his leadership was his close affinity and identification with his heart of compassion rather than eloquence and empty slogans.

A few weeks prior to India’s Independence, Gandhi was in Calcutta, working for peace and harmony among Hindus and Muslims. An emissary was sent to Gandhi by Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel. Before even opening the message, Gandhi asked the man: “Have you eaten any food?” When the man said “No”, Gandhi personally served him food. And after that, Gandhi opened the message from Nehru and Patel which read: Bapu, you are the Father of the Nation. The 15th of August 1947 will be the first Independence Day and we want you to come to Delhi to give us your blessing.”

After reading this Gandhi said: “How stupid! When Bengal is burning, Hindus and Muslims are killing each other and I hear their cries of the agony in the darkness of Calcutta, how can I go to Delhi of the glittering lights? I have to stay here for the establishment of peace in Bengal and if need be, I have to give up my life for ensuring that there is harmony and peace.” Then Gandhi sent a dry leaf that fell from a tree with the emissary as a gift for Nehru and Patel saying: “My friend, you are going back to Delhi. What gift can Gandhi give to Nehru and Patel?

I am a man without power and wealth. Give this dry leaf to Nehru and Patel, as my first Independence Day gift.”

Hearing this, the man shed tears and wet that leaf, which he later brought as a gift to Nehru and Patel.

This was Gandhi’s style of leadership- being one with the people and feeling their pulse, their struggles and their needs and bringing joy and solace to them. Gandhi had no army and weaponry to fight the mighty colonial empire. But his simplicity and strong character were enough to scare them and make them give into Gandhi’s demand to quit India. It was not his eloquence that led millions of people to follow him but his sincerity and simplicity, his readiness to lay down his life for their cause. He would not wear a shirt because millions of his countrymen under the colonial rule did not have enough clothes to cover their nakedness.

This was Gandhi style of leadership. Is Gandhi style still relevant today?
