Art in the Park is set to go for its fifth season on Sunday August 4th. A mixture of 16 artists and artisans showcase their work in Pothole Park. Everything from stone sculpture, glass or ceramic jewellery, pottery, woodwork, leatherwork, pastels, to paintings are on display. It is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and there is no charge for admission.

Art in the Park formed five years ago when the Tour of the Arts was dissolved after a great eight year run. It had been very successful but required a large

volunteer base and complicated logistics trying to coordinate all the sites. The artists involved decided to continue the event on the same weekend the tour had been held, but in a much simplified format.

In its five years, the artists involved have strived to grow and create a festival like atmosphere. Great music is provided by local musicians and the Invermere Legion provides a concession on site.

This past week, July 22nd through July 28th, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 85 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, July 22nd just before 4 a.m., the Invermere Fire Department and RCMP responded to a report of four male youths lighting a 5-liter gas can on fire at the corner of 20th Street and 13th Avenue. One of the males was wearing a red sweater. The fire was quickly extinguished and no other property was damaged. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP. • On Monday, July 22nd at 8 p.m., an officer conducted a traffic stop with a Jeep Patriot after the driver failed to stop at the intersection of Armstrong Road and Highway 93/95 in Invermere. The driver said he had consumed one beer about an hour prior to being stopped. A breath demand was made and the driver failed two breath samples. As a result, the driver was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and his vehicle was impounded.

• On Tuesday, July 23rd at about 1 a.m., police responded to a report of fireworks being set off at Eileen Madson Elementary school in Invermere. Officers located spent firework casings and a broken goal post on the field.

While searching for the offender(s) police also located two park benches that had been broken and tipped over.

• On Wednesday, July 24th, a visitor to the Valley reported losing his Canon 700D camera in downtown Invermere. If anyone has located the camera it can be turned into the Columbia Valley RCMP. • On Thursday, July 25th, a local marriage commissioner reported someone had contacted her via email and requested her services to perform a marriage this summer.

The marriage commissioner became suspicious when she received a photograph of a cheque for about 10 times what she quoted for her services. The individual insisted she deposit the cheque to her account with an online banking app and claimed the additional funds were for her to pay a photographer and caterer. Police confirmed this was a scam and cautioned her about engaging in any further email contact with this individual. No personal banking information was shared in this case.

• On Friday, July 26th, police responded to a single vehicle collision on Westside Road near Invermere. A black van went off the road and into a ditch. The driver admitted to consuming alcohol and the investigating officer could smell an odour of liquor coming from the driver’s breath. The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was transported to the Invermere hospital with an arm injury. A blood demand was made to the driver at the hospital in order to establish his blood/alcohol concentration.

• On Friday, July 26th, a visitor reported that on July 23rd sometime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., a cell phone was stolen from her unlocked vehicle in Fairmont Hot Springs.

• On the evening of Sunday, July 28th, police received a report of a possible impaired driver operating a green Dodge pickup near Radium Hot Springs. Officers conducted patrols in the area and at about 10:20 p.m. they located and stopped the suspect vehicle on McKay Street in Radium Hot Springs. Upon speaking to the driver the officer noted the driver’s speech was slurred and she had an odour of liquor on her breath. The driver complied with a roadside breath demand which resulted in a “fail” meaning the driver had over 100 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood. As a result, the driver was served a 90-day driving prohibition and her vehicle was impounded for thirty days.

TransRockies troops TransRockies racers left Panorama on July 22nd, traveled on the Markin-MacPhail Westside Legacy Trail, before completing day one at K2 Ranch. The 600 km bike race ended in Fernie on July 28th.

New cops on the streets

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Two new police officers have joined the Columbia Valley RCMP, with two more on the way, following a series of transfers that have resulted in three officers moving on.

Constable Margaret Tracz had been in service for 12 years before lobbying to move to the Valley, while constable Brennan Kish came to Invermere after completing his police training in 2018.

A dream remembered Cst. Tracz considers police officers to be “a nomadic people,” but sought out her post in the Valley and intends to stay for the foreseeable future. She’s served in Sherwood Park, Alberta and Fort MacMurray, Alberta but when she visited the Valley a year ago she knew Cst. Margaret Tracz she wanted to return.

“I requested to come to Invermere because I think it’s a beautiful spot and the lifestyle is up to my par,” she said.

She is already feeling settled after two months in the Valley and has been running, biking, hiking and enjoying the hot springs in her spare time.

“I love it. It’s a different type of policing in the way where you can create your own files. You can actually spend a good chunk of your time investigating. The people here are great, and I love the feel of the small community as well,” she said.

While she first wanted to be a police officer when she was in elementary school, she lost track of that dream until her mid-20s.

“It just took me a little bit to get here. I took environmental engineering in college and then I did some tree planting and then I did some cherry picking and then I kind of woke up,” she said. “Maybe it just took me that many years to remember what I really wanted to do.”

But now that she’s found her career fit, she’s proud to serve her communities and do her part to make them safer. For instance, she finds pulling over drunk drivers rewarding when she thinks of the harm she may be preventing.

Once as she was driving around, she witnessed a break-and-enter in progress and was able to stop and catch the perpetrator.

“I like to put puzzles together so if there’s a problem and I can... try to find evidence and piece it together and I can find a resolution or if I can actually find the culprit, it makes me feel good,” she said. “I really like variety. I like attending to every call and just meeting people from different walks of life.”

New recruit “super happy” with posting Cst. Kish is new to the Valley and the RCMP, having arrived to his post in early June.

While the Valley wasn’t his top choice for a location since his friends and family are back in the Lower Mainland, he’s “super happy” Cst. Brennan Kish with his placement.

“An RCMP recruit has to be willing to relocate anywhere. So you sign on the dotted line and you say I’m going to go wherever the RCMP takes me,” he said. “The Columbia Valley RCMP is, in my opinion, phenomenal. It’s got a great morale. It’s got a great team.”

He’s also pleased to be placed in a community with so much potential for hiking, cruising in an ATV and enjoying the outdoors.

Cst. Kish, 22, earned his degree in business administration before going into policing. With many career paths available within the RCMP, his plan is to dabble in everything as a general-duty constable until he discovers his preferences and potentially finds an opportunity to put his degree to work.

“Business applies to everything so I feel like eventually I can use that within the RCMP,” he said.

Weeks into his role, Cst. Kish has already responded to everything from animal calls to car accidents to assaults to domestic-violence situations. He’s also donned his red serge for Bull Riding in the Rockies, the 2019 Grad March and the Canada Day celebrations where he estimates that he posed for hundreds of photos.

“Sometimes you’re there for people on their best days and sometimes you’re there for people on their worst days,” he said. “One minute you can be doing proactive policing – be it hanging out with children and working with them to help them develop and grow – and in another moment you could be responding to a motor vehicle incident or you could be out doing boat patrols or bike patrols or working at the rodeo.”

But whatever his files include, he appreciates having the opportunity to carry them forward until they’re resolved.

“When you’re working in a smaller community like this, you are kind of it. Of course there’s outside resources that we can pull in, but in a lot of cases you’re working a file from beginning to end,” he said.

“I’ve got a lot of closed files. I’ve got a few ongoing as well where I am still investigating them. It’s really nice to be able to show up to something, deal with it and get it done, but it’s also really nice to be able to take some extra time for the cases that require it and do that investigating and figure it out.”

Climate change and the Valley

Climate change is going to be the catchword of the century. Hardly anyone nowadays denies that climate change is a real and growing problem. We at the Pioneer are firmly on the footing that not only is climate change real and imminent, but that there are things we can be doing to fix the problem.

While it seems there is so far to go to reverse the global destruction humanity has dumped on the earth, there are glimmers of hope, if you just look hard enough. If you have not heard about Greta Thunberg yet, google her today. This 16-year old activist from Sweden has encouraged youth around the world to take a stand for climate change.

She has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, featured on the cover of Time magazine, and, in a TED talk heard around the world by hundreds of thousands of people, she said, “What we do or don’t do right now, will affect my entire life and the lives of my children and grandchildren.

In her 11 minute TED talk, Greta goes on to say, “But the one thing we need more than hope is action. Once we start to act, hope is everywhere. So instead of looking for hope, look for action. Then and only then, hope will come today.”

So, to that end, we at the Pioneer are launching a series called Climate Changers, where we investigate not just the hopes of people in the Valley when it comes to change, but the actions.

We began the series in today’s paper by speaking to Eden Yesh. Mr. Yesh, through Kootenay Employment Services, is looking to launch a program that will encourage Kootenay residents and businesses to adopt cleaner energy choices for our homes and transportation needs. For many people, cost is a major barrier in making greener choices, such as installing solar panel systems, buying electric cars, or installing air source heat pumps. Mr. Yesh, in partnership with the Community Energy Association, would like to help lower the cost barrier by organizing bulk buy programs with set vendors who will sell products that suit our Kootenay climate.

The Kootenay Clean Energy Transition Pilot Project also wants to educate the region’s population on making greener choices, and train up contractors who are doing the work.

The buck isn’t the bottom line Dear Editor: I have, on many occasions in my life, been involved with issues that I deeply believe in and that bring me into conflict with my community and sometimes even friends. In my present community, I have met many caring individuals who have worked tirelessly to thoughtfully and continually evolve a community that is, quite frankly, a kind of paradise.

Paradise is not always conflict free, as we know.

When we push for something we really believe in or want for ourselves, as humans it is normal to sometimes not “see” the whole picture. As followers of ideas that friends and family ask us to support, we have a responsibility to make sure we understand what we are supporting, to inform ourselves if we choose to take a stand. Sometimes you may lose friends when you take a stand in opposition to their way of seeing things. I have lost friends.

My husband and I sometimes have a very different take in the way we approach challenges but, even after some spirited conversations, we respect each other’s point of view and continue to move on, basically guided by similar values. As a result, my husband has never asked me to do what I would be uncomfortable with no have I asked him.

Those of us in the “elders” classification of our

community can be inclusive and tolerant. We have learned from our own life experience and are not afraid of change. We hope that the lessons of our youthful exuberance, self-centred objectives, sobering mistakes and proud successes, help us make aware and thoughtful decisions so that we can, with a clear conscience, ease our way into the next tages of our personal evolution.

Our Official Community Plans are upon us again.

Get involved, choose your battles ethically, and, by the by, every single chance you get, vote for what you really believe in. The democratic vision that has supported each and every one of us is in dire danger.

Developers, individual businesses, special interest groups and, most distressingly, our elected officials, are not considering the values that are treasured by the larger community in this Valley.

I think I have discerned in my time here that there is a new direction that citizens of a healthy, modern community want to follow. Less is more.

Protect what we have come here for.

It is no longer a matter of the buck being the bottom line of progress.

On Athalmer’s Narrows...

Dear Editor: Your customer feedback suggested some readers would like to see more poetry and controversy in the Pioneer. So thought I’d take a shot at missing two birds with one stone.

On Athalmer’s Narrows...

I remember well when mine eyes first set On narrowed lanes of Athalmer’s strip.

‘Twas dusk, they lay there shimmering wet So I slowed to forty lest the tires slip.

I crawled along past Huckleberry’s And got confused as I neared the lights.

Sped up the hill and on to Gerry’s, (Where I saw a guy in purple tights).

Seemed I alone wide streets lament My sole comfort: a shot ‘tween beers.

“What next”, I asked, “what greater pains Will Town planners foist upon us?”

Phase II, no doubt, will be bike lanes After Phase I is accepted without a fuss.

Last Sunday past was No Pub Day So I felt the need to be DQ chilled.

But a guy turning right just past Subway Didn’t shoulder check: I was nearly killed!

Messed up and filled with desperation I pulled over and ran to an unlit door.

“Where’s your dope, I have occasion To smoke your stuff ‘til I think no more”.

Feeling low and just a little distraught My mind was slow and getting hazy.

I couldn’t get past one simple thought: “Who moved the lines is clearly crazy”.

The camel’s back broke after today’s market A storm, a rush, a mile long jam.

“This really sucks, I should just park it”.

Seems planners just don’t give a damn.

As weeks passed by, I sought comment, But all I found was a shot in Jeers.

Envisioning barrier-free outdoor adventure

Invermere’s Tanelle Bolt paddled and hand cycled 250 kilometres from Revelstoke to Nelson in early July as cameras rolled for a documentary which is tentatively titled What If? She and Ethan Krueger, both adventurers with spinal cord injuries, took part in the intensive trek to showcase what is possible regardless of their physical abilities.

“What if there were no barriers?”

Ms. Bolt asked. “How far could we go?”

Their friend Mike Riediger, who is the executive director of the Kootenay Adaptive Sport Association, came up with the idea for a documentary about the trip after seeing the barriers blocking those in wheelchairs from participating in things they would otherwise love to do and wishing that everyone could go wherever they pleased.

“It’s a bit of a letdown when you see obstacles in their way all the time,” he said. “Together we are looking to make an inspirational and realistic video showing adventure sport in the area.”

Ms. Bolt, who runs RAD Recreation Adaptive Society, said the documentary and partnership with the Kootenay Adaptive Sport Association is about “everything I’m pushing for: inclusion in the outdoors.”

The friends sought out a trip that would be “physically doable” for Ms. Bolt and Mr. Krueger with the help of their support team. While most of

the trek was accessible, the adventurers came across barriers from a campground beach that was only reacheable on foot to narrow switchbacks that wouldn’t accommodate a hand-cycle bike to a barricade meant to stop ATVs that could also prevent those with adaptive equipment from using the trails.

“It’s accessible but you have to have the entourage,” she said, adding that the trip would have been twice as hard without help getting up the boat launches, setting up tents and navigating past man-made barriers.

One day Ms. Bolt hand cycled for 11 hours in the rain. Battling a headwind on the lake another day she needed to bail out her kayak six times.

Other days were long and hot. A chunk of skin on her back wore away from paddling so much and she developed a pressure ulcer. But she persevered.

“How hard was it? I didn’t cry. It was alright,” she said. “It’s my idea of a vacation.”

Ms. Bolt hopes What If? will “make people aware that there are barriers and we need to start thinking about removing them.”

“It was an epic adventure. It was tattoo worthy,” Ms. Bolt said, displaying her new ink of a nature scene with no barriers, just the sun shining down on a mountain, water and trees.

Lost and found on the river

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com It is not something you would notice until you happen right upon it.

You walk along, lost in your own thoughts, or scanning, as everyone seems to do, for a special rock to hold, or throw, or perhaps put in your pocket and take with you. You think back to childhood, and to the hours spent collecting and throwing and sorting rocks. Then, as if by magic, a river-hued rainbow appears. It is the first sign of an artist’s hand at work along the shoreline.

Broad canvases of art sweep down the river’s edge, created with the greys and speckled whites, the varied tones of aquamarine and muted orange found on the banks of the Kootenay River.

The artist behind the work is Hope Clarke. Hope had been drawn to this Valley because of her great uncle, Pete Lum, who lived in Skookumchuk. As a kid, she would travel to the Valley to stay with the old trapper and trail guide. He was a fascinating man, Hope relays, who built many of the local trails, and had a deep knowledge of animals and a soft spot for dogs.

Much of her learning, and her formation as person, happened in the hills and valleys and waterways of the Columbia Valley. Mr. Lum died in 1998 when he was about 100 years old, Hope recalls, but left a lasting impression with his great niece.

While she was raised in Ontario, there was quite the enclave of Newfoundland residents living in her small community. As a young adult, Hope headed east to where the familiar lilting voices of her Maritime neighbours came from. She signed up for a textiles art school in St. John’s, Newfoundland. It was hard work, but Hope left with a textiles diploma and a deep new appreciation for art and her place in it.

She spent 10 years in Newfoundland. In that time, she became a teacher, and moved to an isolated First Nations community in northern Quebec where, for the last eight years, she has worked with the most challenging students, the ones who don’t fit into the traditional classroom setting. It was rewarding work, but incredibly hard. And finally this year, Hope knew she needed to step away and recharge.

And so, she came to Canal Flats, to the area where she learned to connect with nature, to slow down and breathe deeply.

She feels a pull to the river here.

“I’ve always liked the water,” she reflects.

She comes to the river to centre herself. As she spent time on the shore, she began piling up rocks, unsure what would take shape.

“I really like the rocks. The colour is really something else. It’s captivating,” she describes.

Almost daily, she scans up and down the rocky shoreline of the Kootenay River, looking for the next perfect rock. She stacks them in coloured and sized piles – some as small and light as a leaf, others as heavy as a car rim. Without an overall plan in place, she places a rock. One more. Another. Then another. They form circles and flowers and winding rows, reflecting the curve of the river nearby.

The arrangements shape themselves under her artistic hands.

“I found something in it. A meditation. Mindfulness,” she says.

As we walk along the beach, Hope pauses and scoops up a rock. Green the colour of a mountain lake, small enough to fit in her palm.

“Do you always look for rocks while you walk?” I ask.

“Yes,” she says. “You’ll see why.”

We follow the river and I, careful footed, keep my eyes on the ground. Suddenly we are standing almost on top of a mandala-inspired circle, barely noticeable until we are right beside it. This first rock garden she made last July. It is as much a part of the landscape, blending in because of the elements used, yet standing out. It fits in the same way an old wood swing hangs on an ancient oak tree. It is not of the landscape, but in it in a way so perfect, it seems it was meant to be there all along. That mandala has gone under the water a few times. Some is worn away. Remnants of the circle remain.

After that we walk down the riverbank to her largest creation so far. It started as a small circle and kept expanding and expanding. Now it is a swirling mass of rocks, intricate in detail and mesmerizing in scope. It spans several metres wide in

a large, partial flower-shaped circle. After she decided to stop on that one, she has moved her rock pilings to another stretch of beach where she now has a new project, taking on a different shape and even a different feel, though it uses the same elements. She drops the rock she picked up earlier into a green-toned pile.

Hope’s rock art varies in scope and size all along the shoreline. She has made some pieces to rest in the watery transition between river and land, so the stones would glimmer through the waves. In another area she has created a series of cairns – simple rock stacks, as the start of some sort of new art venture. They remind her, she says, of the missing and murdered Indigenous women.

She would like to use red rocks (think the red dress movement, where a red dress hanging in a tree is to remember the women), as tribute to the lost lives.

While the work has been meditation for her, she wants others to take away an appreciation for nature through her work. She acknowledges that

it has become public art, though that was never the original intention. She knows others have happened upon her work and celebrated the complex simplicity found in her creations.

“People are so far removed from nature now,” Hope says. “I’m so appalled and sad and scared.

This is the end of nature.”

She wants her work to be an act of discovery.

For people on the shore, looking to connect with nature, to happen upon her creations and maybe take away a deeper sense of self. To that end, she encourages people to not have a concrete map to find her work. Instead, to get out of their vehicles, wander paths they have not trodden, and see if they can discover for themselves. And maybe, if you choose the right path, you will uncover Hope’s mesmerizing rock art too.

As we leave the beach, heading back to civilization, we pass a couple beachcomers. They walk along the rocky shore, heads turned down, scanning back and forth looking, it appears, for the perfect rock.

As he nears 30 years as a performer, Danny Michel has no intention of picking a musical genre and settling down with it.

“That would be like a prison sentence if I was told I had to play like one style of music for my entire life. I don’t know how people do it personally. Life is short and there’s so much great music. I just want to be a part of it and understand all of it that I can and soak it all up,” he said.

Mr. Michel’s albums range from rock to folk to a classical-style album with strings and brass which he recorded in the Arctic.

“I’ve kind of always been all over the map,” he said.

When the musician who lives by Collingwood, Ontario went to Belize in 2011, he heard music by the Garifuna Collective, music that surprised and delighted him and made him feel young again.

“It’s like a combination of all these different cultures – the Garifuna culture and Belize and Africa – and it’s all mixed together and it’s really interesting stuff,” he said.

After a steady diet of rock and pop music his whole life, he was amazed by the Afro-Amerindian troupe’s sounds.

It was just very exciting,” he said. “I spent lots of time in Belize and got really into the music there so I discovered that band and really loved them and tracked them down and convinced them that we should make a record together.”

That album Black Birds Are Dancing Over Me led to a joint tour of Canada and the United States and to a JUNO nomination.

This summer Mr. Michel and the Garifuna Collective will be united again at Invermere MusicFest, where Mr. Michel will perform before the collective on Friday, August 16th.

“It’s going to be great. I can’t wait to see them again,” he said.

Mr. Michel will play from his “big arsenal of songs” and will share selections from his most-recent album White and Gold, in which he played the guitar, bass, drums and keyboard, which he called “the instruments of the Beatles” and “the classic rock and roll four instruments.”

“It was a lot of work but a lot of fun too,” he said.

Invermere MusicFest will take place on August 16th and 17th. Music will start at 5 p.m. both days and last well into the evening at the family-friendly festival. Tickets are available at www.invermeremusicfest.com.

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The sun was shining bright last Friday, July 26 when two altruistic community organizations came together to help local athletes achieve their dreams.

The Lake Windermere District Lions Club hosts an annual charity golf day at Copper Point. The event, one of the Lions’ biggest annual fundraisers, puts half the money raised into Lions’ coffers, and half they donate to another local organization or specific project. This year, the golf day raised about $10,000 total, and Lions chose Special Olympics Invermere as the recipient of the $5,000 cheque.

The Lions had never donated funds to Special Olympics Invermere before, sim-

ply because they had never been asked or knew of the need, charity golf organizer Harold Hazelaar explains. Once the club members heard about Special Olympics Invermere, they were happy to help support the local athletics-based organization.

“It’s a perfect fit,” Mr. Hazelaar remarks.

Special Olympics Invermere volunteer Mike Fairhart said the donation will go a long way into helping local Special Olympics athletes pursue their athletic dreams. Teammates often travel for tournaments, and donations such as this can help cover costs of travel. For example, one Special Olympics Invermere member has qualified for national games in Thunder Bay next year.

Party like it’s the ‘80s at ULLR this August

Then you’re in luck. ULLR Bar is bringing back the ‘80s on August 9th, with live music by Nelson-based band Val Kilmer and the New Coke.

The five-member band plays the decade’s most danceable hits, though the sets they perform are not a simple matter of selecting from the decade’s top 100 list.

“The songs we choose are not necessarily the most obvious choices, but really good songs that translate well,” drummer Eric Hoodicoff says. “It’s great songs played by great musicians and for a great time.”

Guitar player Mark-Andre Hamelin describes their sets as danceable and fun to play, with catchy tunes and lyrics.

“The shows are super fun, people love the songs,” he says. “It’s a great decade for party music, and people always have a good time.”

Mr. Hamelin speculates that people still love this particular decades’s music as it was a “golden era” of songwriting.

“There’s something about the ‘70s / ‘80s time frame that are just great songs. Some of those hits are a lot of one hit wonders. They’re well written. They’re simple. Outdoor Art Sale

Special Olympics Invermere offers a number of programs for Columbia Valley residents with intellectual disabilities. Programs include bowling, which has the largest number of participants, averaging around 17 each week.

Special Olympics Invermere launched a golf program last year, running a successful second season now. They also offer swimming in conjunction with the Otters Swim Club out of Radium Hot Springs pool. They have a clubfit program through Valley Fitness Centre, where members go and work out at the centre every Friday. In the winter, they host an alpine ski program as well as cross-country skiing. This year, Mr. Fairhart shares, they hope to start up a snowshoeing program as well.

The different activities are chosen as a result of interest from Special Olympics Invermere members, volunteer capacity, and generous partnerships with area businesses and nonprofit organizations.

“We’ve got tremendous support from around the community,” Mr. Fairhart says.

There are around 18 to 20 participants between all the programs. Each activity requires at least a head coach and one to two volunteers to make it run, though for something like downhill skiing, Mr. Fairhart notes, they

have a team of volunteers that form a wedge behind the skiers to protect them from possible run-ins with other riders.

He urges anyone interested in volunteering with the organization, or who has a family member with intellectual disabilities who has an interest in joining Special Olympics Invermere, contact local coordinator Carolyn Kurtz at kurtz22@telus.net, or athlete coordinator Andrea Haworth at andreahaworth@shaw.ca.

The day of the Lions Charity Golf Day Tuesday, July 2nd, there was a wicked rainstorm, hampering the usual turnout of between 150 and 200. The Lions club noted they are very grateful to all those who braved the foul weather this year to come out and support the service club through the Golf Day. Other years, funds have gone towards projects as varied as a bus for the Columbia Valley Rockies, a new playground in Radium, rescue vehicles and Lions Park in Invermere.

The Lions club is a strong Valley service group, with around 50 members now, Mr. Hazelaar reports. He speculates that the membership is so high because, “along with hard work, we have fun too.”

Time Spent on Columbia Lake: A Day In the Life Submitted by Tracy Connery

Between the fresh air and outdoors; the mountains, the water, and the variety of activities possible, contemplating time spent on Columbia Lake, just minutes from Lake Windermere, is simply dreamy.

But, there’s imagining what days spent on the lake could be, and then there’s the real thing.

Time on Columbia Lake? Real and dreamy!

Experience time spent on Columbia Lake: along the shores, on the water, and simply appreciating friends, family, and the blissful surroundings… a day in the life.

7:00 - Smell the coffee brewing. The inviting aroma combines with the fresh morning air drifting through the screened patio doors. The sun appears over the rugged Fairmont Range across the lake, already warming the bedroom.

7:15 - We take our coffee on the deck. The lake below is bright, sparkling, and still; beckoning us to glide across her glassy surface. Soon….

We take our first hot sips in peaceful silence, save for the bold vibration of our summer friend, the hummingbird, drawing sugary nectar from the nearby wildflowers. We hear children stirring indoors.

8:00 - Paddle boards in tow and fully caffeinated with a local brew, the still, turquoise waters bring us out early to take in the warmth of the quickly rising sun. We gently skim the glassy surface; our paddles against the water and the ducks and loons beyond the only sounds.

9:30 - A walk in the mountain air! We pass

the old trough – spring water trickling through the lush green. The air smells so sweet! Not surprising, a familiar face from the neighbourhood – she smiles and nods as she jogs past. We admire the aquamarine of Columbia Lake on our stroll along the Lake Road above.

11:00 - Leisurely puttering in my kitchen oasis – breathing in the lake view beyond – tidying from breakfast and preparing a delectable picnic lunch at the lake today.

Noon - Beach with family and friends.

Loaded with goodies, we walk down to the beach to enjoy a relaxed lunch on the shore.

1:00 - Enticed into kayaks with the kids!

Rowing, splashing, and exploring, we appreciate the beauty and tranquility of Columbia Lake. There’s a lone Great Blue Heron, all wings and legs, in the grasses of the Columbia River wetlands; fellow lake lovers on kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes wave as we pass.

2:15 - As we paddle homeward, we see Dad behind the wheel of a slowly meandering ski boat loaded with neighbourhood friends and waterskis preparing for an afternoon of exhilarating fun – with so few other boats, they’ll almost have the lake to themselves!

3:00 - Siesta on the shore! Time with a favourite book and perhaps a snooze in my beach chair.

4:00 - Someone breaks out the watermelon!

A perfect pre-dinner refresh. We accept the neighbours invite to their fire pit after dinner.

4:30 - A quick dash to nearby Fairmont Hot Springs to pick up a few last minute ingredients for dinner and a bottle of BC wine!

6:00 - A tasty BBQ on the deck as we take in the view of the incredible setting we’ve enjoyed all day. The day is still wonderfully warm, and the burgers disappear fast after an active day in the sunshine and fresh air.

8:30 - At the neighbour’s roasting marshmallows – s’ mores for dessert! The company is lovely, and the fire is warm as the heat of the day dissolves into darkness and a sea of glittering stars.

We stay up far too late… laughing and sharing the magic that is life on the lake.

Partnership keeps Loop the Lake alive

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The 24th annual Rotary club Loop the Lake is set to run Saturday, August 10th.

The annual foot race was coordinated by the Rotary of Invermere as an annual fundraiser since its inception.

But club membership has dwindled over the years, from about 50 in 1995 to 20 today, while the median age of its members has increased in that same time.

“It became quite onerous for us to take on that big event just with us,” explains Yvonne Redeker, Rotary club president.

At the same time, volunteers were getting burnt out trying to put on the same event year after year.

The club did not want to see its biggest fundraiser end, so they looked around to see how they could continue the event with less of the organizational stress involved. They connected with Canmore-based business Philanthropic Events and Tours, which organizes the Canmore half marathon. The two organizations decided to work together, starting in 2018. Ms. Redeker says overall, it has been a positive switch.

“They take on the organization of the event. We maintain the reputation, the connections, and all our contacts and volunteerism. But we don’t have to do the day-to-day organization of it,” she explains.

Race director Jamie Carrick agrees, saying it has worked out well for the two groups to work together.

“It’s a fantastic event in town, it’s well loved, and we wanted to be a part of it,” says Mr. Carrick of the new partnership.

Wildfire smoke and highway closures the last couple summers impeded racer numbers, but organizers are hoping to see a return this year to the average 600 racers that typically show up for one of the three distance races.

Mr. Carrick urges runners to sign up now, noting it is a family-friendly event, with kids entering as well as parents pushing strollers, while also being a great race route for more competitive athletes.

One interesting note about this year’s run, he adds, is that all runners will receive a Loop the Lake wooden finisher medal, custom made by a Vancouver island company.

The 24th annual Loop the Lake takes place Saturday, August 10, with options for 5 k, 10 k, or half marathon races. All racers leave from the College of the Rockies parking lot, and the 10k and half marathon runners now head down Westside Road and back. Everyone finishes at the Rotary ballpark.

Retired educator writes children’s book

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com With more than three decades working in public education, Pamela Maxwell has a passion for literacy. She has taught elementary to high school students, working with them to build a love for learning and literacy for 32 years.

She retired to the Columbia Valley in 2013, where she has happily tended to customers at the Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe in Radium Hot Springs for the past five years.

One of the standards of education is learning not only how to write, but to write creatively. In 2015, Ms. Maxwell began developing the idea of writing a children’s book.

“It was always something on the bucket list. I always wanted to do a children’s book,” says Ms. Maxwell.

But family pulled at her time and, for awhile, the book was shelved. Then last year, she began again in earnest, roping her talented daughter, who lives in Ottawa, into creating the illustrations.

“I wanted to encourage her in her artwork. It became a mother / daughter project,” Ms. Maxwell says.

Her daughter, Amy Maxwell, had a son in the middle of the project, adding an element of joy but also added time to the whole process. Eventually, with the help of a few long-distance visits and many phone calls, they completed the book and signed

on with a publishing house to release it.

Ms. Maxwell’s book, I Want To Be A Writer, follows the journey of Pencil who, ever since he left the factory, could not wait to become a writer. He comes up against many trials in his pursuit of his dreams.

Ms. Maxwell got her hands on her first box of books just a couple weeks ago.

She says to finally hold the book in her hands almost took her by surprise.

“There was that sense that it would never come out; it took so long to get it done,” she says.

So, what does Ms. Maxwell hope children take away from reading this book?

“An interest in writing, of looking at things in a different way. Thinking about the objects that they use all the time or the things they see and where they came from, just to really get their imaginations going,” she says.

She encourages others to try their hand at writing, especially children’s books - “We need more writers” she urges.

Ms. Maxwell started her book tour with local kids at the Radium Public Library last Friday, July 26th during summer reading club. She will be at the Invermere Public Library Thursday, August 8th at 1 p.m. during summer reading club.

Ms. Maxwell will have books available for sale for $20.

The peak of Pinto

Hikers are rewarded with a spectacular view from the top of Pinto Mountain with Assiniboine Mountain in the distance.

By Joe Lucas Summit Trail Makers Society With Pinto Mountain only 20 km from Invermere and with the upgrades Summit Trail Makers Society did last summer, Pinto is a must-do hike. From the top you get unobstructed views of the Stanford Range (which Pinto is in), Mount Nelson to the west and Mount Assiniboine off to the northeast. Once on the trail the return trip is about 7.2 km with an elevation gain of 940 metres.

Driving from the lights at Tim Horton’s, go south on highway 95 for 2.9 km

where you turn left onto the Windermere Loop Road. Go for 1.1 km where you turn left onto the mine road. You are very close to the Mount Swansea recreation area.

From the CertainTeed Mine maintenance shed, go 3.2 km to take the first left onto a gravel road. After years of inactivity, this area will see some active logging either this summer or next, so watch for road maintenance and logging trucks.

Stay on this road for the next 6.7 km, and after a steady climb this road will level out

where you start to look for the first right. Go about 800 m where you take the more well worn road on the left for the last 500 m to the parking lot.

Driving from the lights at Tim Horton’s to the parking lot is about 17.5 km with an elevation gain of 720 m.

If you are early in the hiking season look for yellow lilies early in the hike. After about 1.5 km, the trail starts to open up into a large meadow with long, steep grassy slopes to the right.

Continue on the trail as it goes back into

Photo by Joe Lucas the trees then on to the saddle. Here the trail takes a sharp right along the ridge to the peak. This is the steepest part of the hike but you will be rewarded with some great views of the valley and the Purcell mountain range. As you near the top you will encounter a false summit. The actual summit is a bit further on, marked by a cairn. Enjoy your time in the mountains.

Three local golf courses get top marks in SCOREGolf’s Top 59

By Jordan Fuller Special to the Pioneer Three of the Columbia Valley’s top golf courses were recognized in 2019 by SCOREGolf, which compiles a ranking of the Top 59 Public Golf Courses In Canada each year.

Started in 1980 as the program for the Canadian Open, SCOREGolf has grown into Canada’s top golf magazine, billing itself as The Voice of Canadian Golf. It’s well-known for its ranking of Canada’s Top 100 courses, and, perhaps more importantly to the average golfer, the Top 59 Public Courses.

With Brooke Henderson dominating the LPGA Tour and Adam Hadwin shooting a 59 on the PGA Tour, as well as promising young players like Roger Sloan, Nick Taylor and Corey Connors making waves on leaderboards every week, golf in Canada is growing every year.

Exciting tournaments like the RBC Canadian Open and the CP Women’s Open help by putting the spotlight on some of Canada’s finest courses, but designation as a Top 59 Public Course by SCOREGolf is one of the highest honours a public facility can receive. It requires the course to be a fun, challenging experience, with interesting architecture and beautifully manicured conditions.

Greywolf Golf Course in Panorama enjoys the distinction of being named a top 5 public course. Located in the valley of the Purcell Mountains, it makes wonderful use of the dramatic elevation changes with par 3s that span massive canyons and hugely downhill tee shots with majestic mountains looming in the background. The Point Course at Copper Point in Windermere sits at #30 on the list. The flagship course of the 36 hole Copper Point facility, the Point Course is a beautiful oasis in the Kootenay Rockies, close to the popular Invermere resort that attracts thousands of tourists each year. Its wide fairways navigate up and down mountainsides through densely forested terrain. With each passing year, Copper Point is coming into focus as a tourist destination unto itself, rather

Visiting participants had a wonderful day and were wowed as they arrived to view a beautiful scene of a morning mist hanging over Lake Windermere. The mist lifted off as the tournament began and sunshine flooded the Columbia Valley and the courts at Pine Ridge; providing perfect conditions for the 1st tournament.

Canal Flats Council briefs

By Dean Midyette Special to the Pioneer The Village of Canal Flats council convened on Monday, July 22nd to hold a public hearing regarding a zoning bylaw amendment and to hold a regular meeting of council. Council is pleased to announce that the inclusive playground at Tilley Memorial Park is nearing completion.

Within the zoning amendment were three issues: setting a minimum width of primary residents in R-1 zones to 18 feet (5.5m), clearly defining what a temporary structure is, and ensuring that signage for businesses and organizations be taken down once the entity ceases operation. Two presentations from residents were made during the public hearing with one speaking in favour of keeping the minimum width at 18 feet and one speaking against. No opinions were submitted in writing prior to the public hearing.The bylaw amendment also received third reading during the regular council meeting with all discussion centered on the minimum width. At the conclusion of the discussion council moved unanimously to change to minimum width from 18 feet (5.5m) to 22 feet (6.7m). Council members opined that a wider structure gives more “curb appeal” and supports the Mountain Modern theme enshrined in the new Official Community Plan. Other municipalities in the Upper Columbia have set their minimum widths at either 18 feet or 20 feet.

Other items on the agenda included a quarterly report from RCMP Staff Sergeant Darren Kakuno. Sgt. Kakuno stated that there has been some staff turnover at the detachment and that, effective Friday, the detachment will once again be fully staffed. Also, calls for service in Canal Flats decreased from 40 to 24 for the period April thru June 2019 from the previous year. Sgt. Kakuno informed council that a grant used to support services for victims of domestic abuse had not been renewed and that services for victims may be impacted.

The Open Burning Bylaw was passed into law unanimously.

Finally, council received a letter from the Ministry of Children and Family Development announcing new daycare funding designed to create new spaces for children across B.C. More information will be made available regarding the New Spaces Fund in the coming weeks.

Dancing for the ladies

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Why do male strip shows exist? Why do women go to them? And why was the show in Invermere at Copper City Saloon on Friday, July 26th so popular that the VIP section sold out in advance? The Pioneer went on an investigative mission to find out.

M, who is 34 and single, said she was there: “Cause I’m just a perv... I was hoping to get into perv row.”

With the VIP section full, she and her friend settled for a tall table in the second row.

“This is how I’m justifying it: entrepreneurs. I’m supporting entrepreneurs,” said A, who is 36 and single, as she sat near the back before the show and confessed to having jangled nerves. Would she stay for the show or bolt into the night? She wasn’t sure.

Closer to the stage, B and V, both 30 and in common-law relationships, were enjoying a feast but scooched over in their booth to chat about why they were there.

“It’s having something to do that you can just do as girls. You go out with your girlfriends. I don’t know if it’s even about the guys. Leave the boyfriends and the husbands at home and go and have a good time,” B said, adding that she usually only goes to the bar with her boyfriend.

“I don’t even know if there’s a sexual appeal or anything like that. It’s just something different. You kind of go as like a joke,” said V. “For me, every time I see male strippers – it’s usually for a bachelorette party or just like a girls’ night or I’ve been to them with my girlfriends in Vegas – it’s always about no men. It’s about just having a good time with a group of girls. You can go to the bar and not have to share the bar with a bunch of dudes that are wasted.”

From there the girls, joined by A who was feeling more settled, talked about how paradoxically the strip show was a safe space from unwanted attention from men. They still felt that way when Austin Stone came over to their table, told the giggling ladies how “it’s really important to stretch” and popped his leg onto the back of their booth.

His theory on why women flock to see him and his cohort is that: “Maybe they don’t get the appreciation and respect at home that we show them here. We get to make

all those girls in that room feel beautiful... It’s somewhere where they can come and let loose without a whole bunch of dudes judging them – especially in small towns when it’s all like mailbox gossip.”

Later on A said: “I was paranoid to leave our drinks.

Who here is going to roofie our drinks?! Mind blown... I think it’s almost like the liberation of women – free from the male gaze that we don’t choose. Instead we get a choice of our level of participation from a doting, safe male.”

Her preferred level of participation was to be an observer who wanted no contact with the men but who kept remarking on their strength as they lewdly hoisted the most-enthusiastic participants onto their shoulders or sprang into a handstand over a woman they’d placed on the floor.

“I can have one lap dance tonight, but that’s pretty much it,” said K, who is 27 and in a common-law relationship. “I’m so nervous but I’m so excited... They’ve all got tattoos and nice calves.”

After Bobby Drake was finished writhing over her, she reported back to a table of bystanders: “He literally told me: ‘You can touch me, you know.’”

Other women didn’t need the encouragement and groped the men with abandon – and with permission.

There was a theme of permission that obscene evening, with the emcee asking the audience how much clothing they wanted the entertainers to remove and indulging those in the VIP seats who cheered the loudest for the full show.

As the night ended, A mused about consent and how a night of such questionable entertainment might have a side benefit of being therapeutic for the women who get to transgress their normal boundaries, knowing that the men will stop and that they’ll remain safe.

Maybe male strip shows are “rituals of rebellion” – an anthropological term for reversing the social order and creating a temporary change in power dynamics – that much like Halloween puts the candy – or the bums – in the hands of those who have traditionally held less power.

Then again maybe they are just about the bums.

“What incredible movements,” A said, trailing off. “If I didn’t have self respect...”

MLA continues to work in inter-provincial health concerns

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The healthcare situation across provincial borders is still causing problems for Valley residents. And Doug Clovechok, Columbia-River Revelstoke MLA, is continuing to work on inter-provincial border care.

The issue came to light in the Columbia Valley last February, when an area doctor raised concerns about B.C. patients living in our border region being sent further from home than needed because they were turned away from accessing Alberta health services.

Mr. Clovechok and fellow border-region MLAs are still pressing the issue, he says, and hearing from constituents about how the unofficial policy is affecting them.

“I know of four couples I’ve talked to directly who had moved here from Alberta, but have now repatriated back to Alberta,” because of this border conflict, Mr. Clovechok says. “We’re actually losing British Columbians over this.”

Liberal leader Andrew Wilkinson wrote a letter to Alberta Premier Jason Kenny regarding medical care for British Columbians in Alberta. In the letter, Mr. Wilkinson wrote, “access to elective services from Alberta specialist physicians and hospitals has been curtailed under Alberta’s previous government for reasons that are not entirely clear. This has resulted in substantial cost and hardship to the

fairly small number of affected British Columbia patients who must travel for care in Kelowna or Vancouver, when the same care is available in Lethbridge, Grande Prairie or Calgary, but denied to them by Alberta Health Services.”

In the letter, Mr. Wilkinson asked that the Alberta minister of health review the practice. The letter includes specific examples of hardship caused by the inter-provincial system, including an infant in Invermere who stopped breathing and experienced an unexplained code blue.

The letter says the baby was denied transfer to Calgary and, instead, it took nearly seven hours for the child to receive the required specialized care in British Columbia.

It is cases like this that keep Mr. Clovechok pushing on the issue. He had a meeting with more than 40 people in the healthcare field about a month ago, where they talked about a range of issues including how to improve healthcare at the regional hospital in Cranbrook. Other issues that affect people’s access to care include transportation, another platform Mr. Clovechok is pushing to change.

“There is no simple answer to this,” he says. “At the end of day, health care issue isn’t going away and we’re working really really hard on it.”

“I want to be a TV”

By Fr. Jojo Augustin St. Joseph’s Catholic Church A primary school teacher asked her pupils to write an essay on, “A wish you want from God?” At the end of the day, the teacher collected all the essays given by her pupils.

She took them to her house, sat down and started marking while watching the TV. Whilst marking the essays, she saw a strange essay written by one of her pupils. That essay made her very emotional.

Her husband came and sat beside her and saw her crying. The husband asked her, “What happened?”

“What’s making you cry?” She answered, “Read this. It is one of my pupil’s essay.” Oh, God, make me a Television.

I want to live like the TV in my house.

In my house, the TV is very valuable. All of my family members sit around it. They are very interested in it.

When the TV is talking, my parents listen to it very happily. They don’t shout at the TV. They don’t quarrel with

the TV. They don’t slap the TV. So, I want to become a TV. The TV is the center of attraction in my house. I want to receive the same special care that the TV receives from my parents.

Even when it is not working, the TV has a lot of value. When my dad and mom come home, they immediately sit in front of the TV, switch it on and spend hours watching it. The TV is stealing the time of my dad and my mom. If I become a TV, then they will spend their time with me. While watching the TV, my parents laugh a lot and they smile many times. But I want my parents to laugh and smile with me also. So please God make me a TV. Last but not the least, if I become a TV, surely, I can make my parents happy and entertain them. Lord I won’t ask you for anything more. I just want to live like a TV. Please turn me into a TV.” The husband completed reading the essay. He said “My God, poor kid! He feels lonely. He did not receive enough love and care from his parents. His parents are horrible.”

The eyes of the primary school teacher filled with tears. She looked at her husband and said, “Our son wrote this essay.” May our children never desire to be Phones, Facebook, Twitter or TVs to get love and affection.
