Up close at the rodeo

Greg Geiger prefers a small rodeo to a big one, especially when the scaled-down rodeo ropes in the best cowboys and bull fighters on the circuit as with Invermere’s Bullriding in the Rockies, one of the biggest annual fundraisers for the Columbia Valley Rockies.

“You’re right up close with the animals and the bull riders and that,” he said. “The people like it because it’s so up close and personal.”

Compare that to the Calgary Stampede or other rodeos where the stands are packed so full that the massive bulls are so distant they look small enough to crush between your fingers.

Now imagine the exact same caliber of show with the same World Professional Bullriders but with a fraction of the audience and with a seat so close you can’t help wincing when an overzealous bull rams into the fence.

That’s what you’ll get at the 21st annual Bullriding in the Rockies show on Friday, July 19th, where Mr. Geiger said there are no bad seats, and where one of the top two rodeo clowns in the world will perform.

The Valley’s rodeo is such a cozy gathering that he said you might even get the chance to meet the riders at the dance as many of them stick around for the weekend.

With tickets limited to just under 2,000 and with the rodeo selling out most years, Mr. Geiger recommends that people snap up their tickets soon. Tickets are $36 for adults and $28 for students and seniors. If you lasso yours by Saturday, July 13th, you’ll save $4. Tickets are available at Invermere Home Hardware Building Centre, at the Brisco General Store and at Mountainside Market in Fairmont and Radium, and at the Pioneer office.

The family-friendly evening also includes a Cowboy Dinner ($12), a dance with music by KixxSin and the opportunity to test your prowess against a mechanical bull.

So close you can almost taste the dirt, at the annual Bullriding in the Rockies event.

Recycling grows up and earns its own cash

by Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com A lot of things change in the span of 20 years, said Loree Duczek, the communications manager for the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK), adding that it’s time to let the RDEK’s recycling options grow up, take on some new responsibilities and start earning some money of their own.

The RDEK’s recycling offerings have gone 20 years with very few changes, but after two decades costing taxpayers a regular allowance, recycling is ready for an overhaul.

“Right now with the yellow bin recycling program, we pay for every tonne of recyclables that go into those yellow bins. It costs us to process them and to get them to market,” she said.

While the yellow bins will remain unchanged, Ms. Duczek encourages everyone to switch to the new Recycle BC Depot at the Columbia Valley Landfill on Windermere Loop Road, where many additional materials will be accepted and where RDEK will earn cash when residents recycle.

“We get paid for every tonne of recyclables that we collect,” she said. “We’re averaging right now between $80 and $120 per tonne for every tonne of recycling we collect at the depots versus paying for every tonne.”

These payments for the Recycle BC Depot are made possible because manufacturers “are legislated and mandated to take those materials back and see them to be recycled and managed through the end of the lifecycle,” she said. “Rather than you and I paying at the till every time we come up with a package or a piece of paper or a newspaper or a magazine – because that would get ridiculous – they actually have charged it on the front end to the producers and manufacturers.”

Accepted recyclables at the Recycle BC Depot include: everything that can be recycled through the yellow bins, as well as Styrofoam, most packaging plastics, hairspray cans, chip bags and tubes, chocolate-bar wrappers, bubble wrap, padded envelopes, garden pots, milk cartons, cookie tins, most plastic bags (including Ziplocs and pet food bags), paper cups, coffee pods and loads more.

“There are over 76 new things that can be recycled,” Ms. Duczek said. “The more we put into those Recycle BC depots, the more we will get compensated and the less we will have to pay through the yellow bins through the tax base. So do your best to save your stuff and get it to our Recycle BC depots.”

Ms. Duczek has heard from some people who find the new Recycle BC Depot too complicated since the recyclables need to be sorted.

“I promise you that with a few simple adjustments, this new system is really easy,” she said. “Stick with me and I promise you that this new system will be good for all of us because then we’ll be saving.”

Windermere water upgrade Also at the Area F town hall meeting on Tuesday, July 2nd, residents heard from Brian Funke, engineering services manager, who said most of the Windermere watermain construction is complete with some work left to go to restore driveways and fences in the construction area.

The connection between Windermere and the east side is now scheduled for late spring – rather than this fall – as RDEK is reconsidering the best way to proceed with the work, he said.

Wildfire risks With the wildfires that have ravaged British Columbia in the past couple of years, Terry Balan, the protective services supervisor for Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) said we’ve been “super lucky” that the fires haven’t roared closer to home.

“It’s my opinion that there isn’t a community in our regional district that isn’t at risk to wildfire,” he said.

Increased development in rural/urban boundary areas where homes border forests and other wild areas have long been a concern, but homes inside a community aren’t safe either since embers can blow right into town, he said.

Invermere resident and dog charged by protective doe

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com A local man and his dog were charged by a deer at Panorama Mountain Resort last week.

Blair Robinson and his dog Lexi were out for a walk on a trail they walk about five times a week. They crossed the bridge behind Panorama Springs, headed towards the bike cabin direction. Lexi, his almost 7-year old Golden Doodle, was on a leash. That in itself was unusual, said Mr. Robinson, and he cannot pinpoint why he had her leashed that day. They were beside a swath of greenery, between the fenced in pool and the magic carpet. Suddenly, a deer charged them, with no indication a second before there was anything nearby.

The doe came to within a few feet of Mr. Robinson and Lexi, rearing up on her hind legs and pawing at the air to Mr. Robinson. To the dog. Back and forth, relentless in her aggressive charge. The deer was not touching them but coming near with her sharp hooves waving in the air.

It happened so quickly, and the deer charged so fast, Mr. Robinson did not have time to think. Only react.

“I was backing up. I was zigging, I was zagging. The deer was relentless,” he says. “It was terrifying.”

Then, to add to the tension, a fawn began heading towards them. Mr. Robinson’s adrenaline was through the roof, and he didn’t want to hurt the deer as he knew that she was only following her instinct to protect her young. He alternated trying to back up the hill or down towards the bike shop, but the deer pushed forward in either direction.

“All of a sudden, these three heroes on bikes showed up,” he says. The bikers put themselves between Mr. Robinson and the deer, forming a bike wall to allow him to escape. He backed up, thanking the riders profusely as he made his escape.

Mrs. Robinson is very grateful for the three men that put themselves in harm’s way to give him a safe way out of the situation. He had no way to track down who the riders were, so posted a cheers on a local Facebook group.

“Massive cheers and thanks so much to the three Panorama mountain bikers who came over to save my dog and me from a terrifying and sustained attack by a doe protecting her fawn. We hadn’t seen the deer until the doe rushed us and was relentless,” he wrote.

Mr. Robinson was so shaken, he can’t say for sure what happened next, but said several people below appear to have been watching the interaction underway.

One was an employee at Panorama who had been heading towards Mr. Robinson at the time of the attack. The employee made sure Mr. Robinson was OK, and advised him that that this time of year, carrying a big stick would probably help ward off future attacks.

While shaken from the incident, Mr. Robinson said it doesn’t change his love of the outdoors, and he certainly does not fault the deer for acting out of instinct.

He did say it changes how he will walk though, and he plans to carry a stick around this time of year when out walking his dog.

“I’ve always been cautious. But I’ve got a more respectful attitude to keeping distance from deer at this time of year,” he says. Though in this case, he noted, he walks that trail often and had never had a run-in with a deer there before.

“I couldn’t have done anything differently, because it happened so quickly, I just reacted,” he says.

A pedestrian was struck by a car at the intersection in front of the Invermere Library last Saturday, July 6th. The woman sustained minor injuries, reports RCMP.

• On Monday, July 1st at 3:45 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of overdue hikers in the Bugaboo Park.

Three hikers were hiking in the Bugaboos and hadn’t been heard from since Friday night. Police requested the assistance of Columbia Valley Search & Rescue and Bugaboo Resort staff to assist with the search. At about 8 p.m. the same evening, police learned the missing hikers had returned to Edmonton and all were safe.

• On the evening of Tuesday, July 2nd, a red and white 2006 Honda CR80 dirt bike was stolen from the backyard of a residence on Panorama Drive in Invermere. On July 5th, the dirt bike was located in a ditch near Munn Lake and returned to its owner.

• On Wednesday, July 3rd at 11:15 a.m., RCMP attended a collision between a vehicle and a cyclist near 12th Avenue and 15th Street in Invermere. A black Honda Accord was travelling southbound on 12th Avenue when a 10-year-old cyclist failed to stop for traffic as he came out of an alley. The cyclist struck the side of the car. Fortunately he was not injured. The car sustained minor damage from the impact.

• On Thursday, July 4th a resident on Antler Ridge Road in Windermere reported someone had gone through his unlocked Mercedes and Ford pickup on the morning of June 27th and had stolen his Nikon D5200 camera.

• On Friday, July 5th, damage was reported to a gate at Trethewey properties in Windermere. A lock had been broken and the ballast for the gate had been removed, making the gate inoperable. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP. • On Friday, July 5th at about 7:15 p.m., an officer

conducted a traffic stop with a Saturn SL in Canal Flats. The driver admitted to having a beer and a glass of wine earlier in the evening.

The officer read a breath demand which resulted in the driver blowing a “warn” which meant the driver’s blood alcohol concentration was between 60 and 99 mg%. The driver provided a second breath sample which also resulted in a “warn”. The driver was issued a 3-day Immediate Roadside Driving Prohibition.

• On Friday, July 5th at about 9 p.m., police received a report of a single vehicle collision on Highway 95 near Radium Hot Springs. Police attended and located a silver 2006 Saturn Ion in the ditch but no driver at the scene. Within a short period of time the driver attended the RCMP Detachment and explained he was in a curve on the highway when his car hydroplaned causing him to lose control. An officer provided the driver and his passenger a ride to the hospital to be checked out.

• On Saturday, July 6th at 7 a.m., police responded to a single vehicle collision on Highway 95 near Edgewater. A grey Chevrolet Silverado had gone off the road and struck a telephone pole. The driver was transported to the hospital to be assessed prior to police arrival. An officer spoke to the driver at the hospital and observed signs of alcohol impairment. The officer read the driver a blood demand in order to establish the driver’s blood/alcohol concentration.

The driver was also issued a 24 hour driving prohibition.

• On Saturday, July 6th at 10 a.m. police responded to a single vehicle collision on Highway 93 near Kootenay Crossing in Kootenay National Park. The driver of a Toyota Rav 4 was eastbound when she went off the road and down a small embankment. The driver was not injured.

• On Saturday, July 6th shortly before noon, a pedestrian was struck by a Ford Escape at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 4th Street in Invermere. The driver of a Ford Escape was making a left turn from 4th Street to 7th Avenue when she struck a 69-year-old female who was crossing on 7th Avenue. The pedestrian received minor injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

Despite a call from the crowd for a long speech, Cam Gillies kept his remarks brief when the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) honoured him as the Area F Volunteer of the Year.

He didn’t talk about his efforts, accomplishments or motivations. Instead he used his moment at the microphone to champion volunteerism, offering his appreciation to other volunteers and congratulating the RDEK for promoting volunteerism.

“It’s a great honour. I mean I know that there are many people inside this room and outside of this room that are just as deserving as me, but it’s really great, I think, that the RDEK and others thank volunteers,” he said. “We need to celebrate (volunteerism) and celebrate all the volunteers in the community because when you think about it a lot of the great stuff that happens and adds vibrancy to our community is really created by volunteers, so bravo to all of you that are volunteers out there.”

A moment earlier as Area F Director Susan Clovechok listed off the organizations and projects Mr. Gil-

lies serves to advance – from the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club, to Wings over the Rockies, the Lake Windermere Whiteway, an electric car share program, Wildsight and more – she paused to take a breath.

“He’s a keen birder and photographer and can also be found often volunteering at the Windermere elementary school. I have no idea how he has time to make a living, but clearly he’s not doing any binge watching on Netflix,” she said. “Thank you for everything you do for your community and the people that live here.”

One of the nominators who put Mr. Gillies’ name forward for the honour wrote that: “He freely puts over thousands of hours of his time annually into supporting countless community efforts.”

While that might seem like an extreme time commitment, it’s not surprising for Kate Hale and Carly Nickurak, who said that amidst all of his volunteering Mr. Gillies helps them and the others in the Nordic Club up to three times a week all year long.

“He goes to every race with us and waxes our skis,” Ms. Hale said.

Ms. Nickurak added: “He’s made so much of an impact on, like, all of the kids.”

You’ve heard of urban legends, right? Like the lady who had a spider bite that turned into a nest of eggs that hatched under her skin, or the tale of the kid that died from drinking cola after swallowing Pop Rocks.

How about this one: “Nobody reads newspapers anymore.”

Like many urban legends, everybody’s heard it, and some people assume it must be true because they’ve heard it often enough.

Well, like Pop Rocks kid and spider-egg woman, it just isn’t so.

The debunker in this case is 2019 Newspapers 24/7 study, conducted by News Media Canada, the national organization representing more than 1,100 daily and community news media outlets across the country.

This study, the seventh annual one, was conducted in February 2019 across all provinces, in English and French and consists of 800 online interviews. It was designed to explore how Canadians read daily and community newspaper content, on different platforms and at different times during the day.

Since the first study back in 2012, there have been shifts in reading by platform but one thing has not changed: Canadians continue to access newspaper content across all the various platforms.

In 2012, 85 per cent of Canadians reported that they read newspapers on any platform, over the course of a week and in 2019 that number has climbed to 88 per cent.

This year’s report also found that 83 per cent of newspaper readers are accessing at least some of their newspaper content online.

But that’s not replacing print readership, it’s supplementing it: the study found more than half of readers access newspaper content from both print and online sources.

The study found that readers from all demographics use multiple platforms – print, desktop/laptop computer, phone and tablet – to access newspaper content. Most print reading happens early in the day, while digital reading is more consistent from morning to night.

Which brings us to the other urban legend: millenials don’t read news. The research specifically looked at the newspaper reading habits of younger Canadians,

Photo (C1872) courtesy Windermere District Historical Societhy and found that 88 per cent of millennials (those born between 1982 and 1999) read newspapers weekly – the same percentage as the overall population. The difference with this generation is how they access newspaper content – primarily through their mobile phones, and when they read – they peak early in the morning and are more consistent throughout the day, while Boomers peak in both the morning and again after dinner when reading news content.

And again, just because millennials read mostly on their phones doesn’t mean they’re not reading print as well. The study found more than half of all millennial newspaper readers also read news in print – from 57% of all phone readers to 66% of all tablet readers.

Business decision makers are news junkies, with the highest percentage of readership throughout the day across all platforms, again peaking in the morning and after dinner.

“Both print and digital newspaper sources play a unique and distinct role in the lives of Canadians,” says Claude Heimann, the president of Totum Research,

which conducted the study. “Readers start their day with the comprehensive and in-depth reporting of a print newspaper, and stay up-to-date on breaking news with digital as the day progresses.”

As Bob Cox, the chair of News Media Canada, says: “Given heightened levels of global mistrust, we’re seeing a clear and continued affinity for the reliable reporting that newspapers provide. Newspapers continue to be the go-to source for credible, trusted and independent news, in both print and digital formats.”

And unlike an urban legend, that’s something you can rely on.

Downward slide or new path for forest revitilization Dear Editor: Sawmill shut downs and closures in British Columbia should come as no surprise to those who have been paying attention to how forestry has been managed in the province over the past 20 years.

Forest fires, a slump in the global timber market and the pine beetle epidemic have been blamed, but—while these are very real factors—the crisis is rooted in a much deeper problem: a long history of poor forest management.

B.C.’s forests, under the Forests and Range Practices Act (FRPA), are being managed primarily for the profit of large corporations—not what’s in the best interest of local communities. Now that the easy and most accessible areas of forest have been logged across the province, rather than using their profits for mill upgrades and to support B.C. operations, companies have been on a worldwide buying spree, investing in American and Scandinavian forest enterprises with their record earnings from the last high-profit cycle.

One key issue is that the last B.C. government eliminated appurtenance—a condition that required companies to operate mills and provide regional employment in order to harvest the province’s timber.

The previous provincial government also changed forestry legislation so that the Ministry of Forests no longer has to approve a company’s cutting plans, effectively turning oversight of B.C.’s forests over to industry, without a watchdog looking out for community interests or our environment.

These changes have resulted in a concentration of forest harvesting rights in the hands of a few major companies who supply their “super mills,” processing hundreds of logging truckloads a day. The goal is to supply cheap two-by-fours to a global market—and that means endless boom and bust cycles.

The fall out is now being shouldered

by B.C. workers, communities and the environment. The centralization and amalgamation of the forest industry has resulted in fewer mills, diminished woodlands staff, fewer harvesting contractors and less investment in small communities. Communities located within forest tenure areas continue to see diminishing benefits from the forests that once surrounded them.

It’s time to bring forest management

back into the hands of British Columbians.

We must better manage the broad range of forest values including water, forest ecosystems, wildlife, recreation and community stability.

The door is open to change right now.

In a positive step, the B.C. legislature recently passed Bill 22, an amendment to the Forest Act, which allows the Minister of Forest, Lands, Natural Resources and Rural Development to step in to stop the sale of forest tenure (rights to log on provincial lands) that is not in the public interest. After Canfor’s recent shutdown of their Vavenby mill, they have arranged a pending sale of their forest license in that area for $60 million dollars to Interfor, who plan to ship raw logs out of the region. B.C.’s decision on this sale under Bill 22 will be the first big test of the government’s resolve to regain control of our communities’ forests.

Adding to the mix, on Private Managed Forest Land (PMFL) in B.C., we are experiencing a level of forest liquidation never before seen. A significant portion of B.C.’s logging—particularly in the Kootenays and on Vancouver Island—happens on private land, but current B.C. regulations on logging private land provide little to no protection for wildlife, water, or local communities—while giving logging companies big tax breaks. Large companies are cutting down trees on private land so quickly that wildlife, forests and communities are going to bear the consequences for generations.

B.C. has created an opportunity for British Columbians to be heard. Both the Forests and Range Practices Act (FRPA) and the Private Managed Forest Land Program (PMFLP) are up for review and are currently in public comment periods that end in mid-July. It will be up to British Columbians, and their government, to decide if we continue on the downward slide or take a new path toward forest and community revitalization.

Visit engage.gov.bc.ca to share your views on the state of forestry regulation across the province. Submissions are open until July 15th for the Forest and Range Practices Act, and until July 22nd for the review of the Private Managed Forest Land Program.

They have been nursed, soothed, cuddled, and caressed by their mommas. And now they are all asleep, or content in mom’s arms, as the four women share their stories with the Pioneer.

Lindsay LeBourdais, Krystal Haggard, Jacinda Harding, and Johana Roggeman, all gave birth within two weeks of each other this June. At one point, shared Lindsay, it looked as though the four friends might even deliver within 48 hours of each other. And all four were under the watchful care of Sweet Pea Midwifery, run by midwives Kyra Warren and Jo Gillies. The friends would joke towards the end that if an appointment was pushed, one of the other three must be in labour now.

The four friends are part of a group of about 10 to 15 women who get together on a regular basis for dinners and social time. The moms all agree that this support network has been invaluable, with everyone sharing baby supplies, clothes, advice, and real-life stories of giving birth and raising babies.

“I don’t think I bought one article of clothing,” Krystal comments of the generosity pouring out of the moms’ circle.

And Lindsay says the honest advice has been great.

“If all you were to do was read the books, I think you’d go in a little bit blind. But to actually get first hand experience / information from friends who will tell you the truth, then you’re a little bit more prepared,” she says.

Like every pregnancy and birth, the tales are different for Linsday, Krystal, Jacinda and Johanna. For Krystal, her baby was measuring small and she was told she would need to go to Cranbrook given the baby’s size.

“I’m surprised I made it as far along as I did, because I was actually expecting to deliver two weeks prior to that,” remarks Krystal.

Baby Zoe is now a healthy three-week old who looks like her daddy and loves to wiggle her arms in the air – so much so that mom Krystal calls her arms Zoe’s nemesis, needing a tight swaddle to allow her to sleep.

Through a series of events, Jacinda’s pregnancy led her to the point where she needed to deliver within 24 hours, otherwise she would have to be induced.

“We went to Fuze for Pad Thai with lots of hot sauce, and had a good walk. I was trying all the things, and then I drank the midwife cocktail,” she lists.

Nothing was working to kickstart labour. She was scheduled to go to the hospital that evening to be induced. But on the way, she went into labour and started having contractions. She arrived at the hospital at 6 p.m.; Continued on page 10 . . .

When Kayja Becker heard that United Dance was shutting down, she was adamant that dance not die in her hometown.

Ms. Becker grew up dancing in Invermere, revolving her life around the intricate steps of ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, musical theatre, contemporary, modern, and even hip hop.

“It’s expression and it’s art, but it’s also a great way to exercise. You will not find me in a gym, but I can go dancing for hours,” Ms. Becker says. She also credits dance for giving her discipline and focus.

She actually grew up dancing with United Dance co-owners Melyssa Stringer and Michelle (‘Meesh’) Jensen, and the three are still good friends.

“When they told me four years ago they were coming to open a studio I was super excited and offered to help in any way I could,” Ms. Becker explains.

Ms. Becker began teaching dance in high school. Over the last four years, she has helped at United Dance with some guest teaching and choreography, and cheering her friends on from the sideline as they built up United Dance here. One . . . ‘Multiplying’ from 8 Bryce was born at 7:51 p.m.

Bryce is a true second child, who basically lives in the wrap and gets poked, kissed, and hugged often by his doting two and a half year old brother.

First-time mom Johana had wanted to deliver in Cranbrook’s hospital, just in case things went south and she needed more support. However, her baby also came very fast, so she ended up delivering in Invermere.

“I was afraid of having my baby here,” admits Johana. “But everything went well. Kyra and Jo are so amazing, and they always play it safe . . . they don’t give a chance for something to go wrong.”

Diego is all smiles, and loves to stay awake so he doesn’t miss a thing.

Lindsay was due first, but gave birth last. She began to careen a little towards the end of her pregnancy, she admits, feeling like she was might never give birth.

“Without even being prompted, both Kyra and Jo texted me: ‘This is normal, this is what we expect’. They talked me down off several ledges,” Lindsay says.

As a “well-cooked” baby, Xander tends to eat and sleep well so far, reports Lindsay.

The four friends marvel at the odds of not only being pregnant at

Ms. Stringer says she and Ms. Jensen are excited the studio will continue on, and put their full support behind their friend’s takeover.

“We’re super excited, and it’s awesome,” says Ms. Stringer. “We’ve gotten really good feedback from parents and kids as well.”

Ms. Becker will be keeping the same name and all the current studio offerings.

“I want it to be as smooth for the kids as possible,” she says. While she wants to add programming in as time and opportunity arises, she says she does not want the current students to lose anything they were already involved in at United.

She is attending an intensive dance teacher workshop in Edmonton this July to cement her skills, then plans to offer summer camps at the end of August, with the official start of the 2019 / 2020 season beginning this September. And they could not praise the care of their midwives enough. Johanna, Lindsay, and Krystal – all first-time moms – agree they had misconceptions about working with a midwife, with assumptions ranging from no anesthetics to mandatory home births. But, they all agree, instead what they found was exceptional support and care.

Jacinda said having Kyra deliver her first baby, then having Kyra and Jo as midwives for Bryce, was the best choice for her.

“I know they’ve done it thousands of times. I don’t know what I’m doing, so I trust their knowledge, and their expertise,” says Jacinda.

A miscarriage in between Jacinda’s toddler and her newborn was made a little easier with Kyra supporting her through the process.

“Kyra was my rock,” she sums up.

A couple weeks into motherhood, the moms are adjusting well and using their friends network and midwives to answer a thousand questions, from sleep issues to nursing to soothers and more.

Alex Cuba on love, Latin music and little hands Editor’s note: Famed Grammy / Juno winner Alex Cuba was booked to come to Invermere Musicfest in 2018, but had to cancel due to a scheduling conflict. With his return, we are running a story we had done in time for last year’s festival. Buy your tickets now for what is sure to be a dynamic weekend of music, including Mr. Cuba.

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Alex Cuba’s earliest memories are of music with the Latin beat forming the soundtrack of his life.

“Music was there every day, every minute and I was very happy with music being around me all the time,” he said.

Mr. Cuba’s father, Valentin Puentes, was a musician and teacher. When little Mr. Cuba was four, he played a Cuban percussion instrument in a TV performance with a group of his father’s guitar students.

“I remember playing it. I remember people looking at me. I remember feeling nervous because I was in front in of a camera. I remember people saying ‘oh, look how cute he is,’” Mr. Cuba said. “I was having fun. I liked what I was doing.”

He enjoyed performing so much that he could hardly wait for his little hands to grow large enough so he could play the guitar too.

“Around six my hands were big enough,” he said with a laugh.

Mr. Cuba and his hands kept growing and so did his talent. In 1995 he travelled across Canada performing with his father’s band.

Everything changed in Vancouver when he met one of the volunteers who was helping with the show. The couple stayed in touch as he continued with the tour, and they were married in less than a year.

Mr. Cuba moved to Canada to be with his wife and now lives in Smithers, B.C. The couple has three children, aged 21, 15 and 11.

“My mission in Canada has been to introduce a lot of people to Latin music,” he said. “It’s been quite the

mission because a lot of people go through their lives and they never even get to hear what Latin music sounds like.”

Lately he’s gained an unlikely ally in his crusade.

Thanks to Justin Bieber, he said: “You can go to Tim Hortons and listen to Despacito, that song that changed the world, so people are not so innocent anymore about Latin music.”

Mr. Cuba said his music is about love, but not romance.

“You could write a love song to your dog. You could write a love song to your house or to your you-name-it.

I like writing about common love, the love for each one, the love for the world,” he said. “Love, consciousness, being awake, being happy with your life, that’s what I write about.”

While Mr. Cuba travels eight months of the year and performs around 150 shows annually, he’s eager to perform at the Invermere MusicFest the weekend of August 16th.

“I’m looking forward to playing (in Invermere). I’m always looking forward to playing and to express the love of what I do,” he said.

Black Star art weeks at Pynelogs

By Molly McLellan Assistant Curator Over the next few weeks there are going to be some awesome days at Pynelogs!

Starting soon we have three Black Star summer art camps at the beach for youth to choose from. Spend a whole week creating art pieces with the splendid ladies of Black Star Studios. Each camp lasts five days and they happen the weeks of July 15th, 22nd, and August 12th. Each day starts at 10 a.m. and goes till 2:30 p.m. Take inspiration from the beautiful surroundings of Kinsmen Beach as you draw and create. There will be everything from acrylic painting, polymer clay projects, papier-mâché,

and mixed media. You’ll get to have lunch outside. At the end of the week each group will hold an art show at Pynelogs for everyone to come and enjoy. Spots go fast so book in soon with Black Star, and don’t forget, locals get 10 per cent off as well as members of the Black Star Creative Club.

We’ve also got our second Artist Soiree of the season where you can come and meet the local artists of this Valley and hear all about what inspires their work.

can each claim sole ownership of one of the properties, therefore sheltering two properties from capital gains tax.

The family cottage can be a source of enjoyment for many people, but it can also cause estate planning headaches for those who want their children to inherit the property. In some cases, property values may have risen so high that the children are forced to sell the cottage to pay the capital gains tax owing.

While it’s difficult to completely avoid capital gains tax on vacation property, there are some ways to help minimize the burden.

Transfer the Cottage Now Some people opt to pass on the vacation cottage during their lifetime instead of waiting for it to go through their Will, but there are pros and cons to both strategies. By retaining ownership, parents can defer taxation until the death of both spouses and protect the cottage from the child’s creditors or their former spouses.

Shifting ownership while parents are alive, however, has some advantages. After paying capital gains thus far, it allows future capital gains to be deferred further in the future. It also allows parents to avoid probate fees on the cottage and simplify their lives.

There are a few ways to go about it. The property could be gifted to one’s children, but the transaction would take place at fair market value in the eyes of Revenue Canada, even if no money was exchanged. Additionally, when the children eventually sell or pass on the cottage, they will have a cost base equal to the amount paid, possibly resulting in double taxation.

If the cottage is sold rather than gifted, it could be done so using a demand mortgage with deferred payments, which could spread capital gains tax over 5 years. On death, the mortgage could be forgiven in one’s Will and their children could acquire the cottage with no debts and taxes payable.

Rather than transferring ownership of the property directly, the cottage can be moved into a trust. Just like the other scenarios, the transfer results in a deemed disposition of the cottage at its fair market value, causing capital gains tax to be payable. The trust can remain open for 21 years after which its capital property will be deemed to be disposed, triggering capital gains tax. Tax may be avoided, however, if at least one beneficiary of the trust ordinarily inhabits the cottage.

Principal Residence Exemption Those who expect their vacation home to rise in value faster than other residential properties may wish to deem the vacation property their principal residence.

For the time period in which the vacation property was one’s principal residence, it would be exempt from capital gains tax when the property is sold or changes ownership.

Maximize the ACB The adjusted cost base (ACB) of real estate is the amount paid to acquire the property, plus any capital improvement costs. As a capital gain is the difference between the proceeds of disposition and the adjusted cost base (purchase cost plus capital costs), raising the ACB of a property reduces its future capital gain.

Adult Children Adult children are also entitled to their own principal residence exemption; however, this would involve at least a partial transfer of ownership, which would mean that the property would be exposed to any lawsuits, marital breakdowns or the like that the adult child may be involved in.

Secondly, the portion transferred to the child would result in a deemed disposition at market value, triggering capital gains.

Capital Gains Exemption Properties bought before 1982 could qualify for a capital gains exemption. For example, if spouses owned two properties which were purchased before 1982, they

With so many options, Mr. Zoltan can’t choose just one favourite dish.

“It’s hard to decide. Everything is very good,” he said. “The beef stew is very famous. The chicken paprikash is one of the favourites... Everybody loves Hungarian food. It’s very good. We have plenty of repeat customers. Everybody who comes to eat, they all love it, so they all come back.”

Their chef, Andrew Szabo, is also from Hungary. While Mr. Szabo works in a popular restaurant in London, England, he is preparing the food at Citadella Restaurant this summer.

Mr. Szabo came from a family of chefs; mother and grandmother were chefs themselves. He learned the trade young at home and also studied as a chef and a pastry chef.

“He makes excellent desserts too. Somloi Galushka (trifle) is our most famous one,” said Mr. Zoltan. “He likes the mountains and he really likes what he is doing so we have really, really good food.”

Tim invited local musicians from Invermere to Edgewater to perform at Christ Church Trinity so he could record them for a fundraising album for the Columbia Valley Food Bank.

Paul Carriere, Carol Wilke, Catherine Tumason, Barry Moore and Tanya Dubois are featured on the CD, which is called How to Save a Drontosaurus. The album includes jazz pieces, classical songs and some original compositions.

“These people are phenomenal musicians for sure,” Tim said. “It was great for me. It was just like having a private concert having these professional musicians come in and play. It was really fun.”

The musicians donated their time and performed songs of their choosing for the album.

“The track listing is not really curated. I just let them go. Each of them has a different sort of style, but it does all come together in a sort of a classical jazz way,” he said.

Fundraiser CD for the Columbia Valley Food Bank.

Citadella Restaurant in the Rocky Mountain Springs Lodge offers such a stunning panorama of the Valley that owner Steven Zoltan calls it his million-dollar view. Guests on Citadella’s patio are treated to the vista as they enjoy the Hungarian fare for which the restaurant is known.

“We have a beautiful view on the top of a hill. That’s why people like to come here – and the food,” he said. “We have an unobstructed bird’s eye view of the Rockies from our balcony... We are very high up so we are above the trees so it’s a very nice view because we can see all of Radium from up here and the mountains... It’s very quiet and we have a lot of hummingbirds and we just don’t even know we are in a town.”

Citadella Restaurant is not only in town: at 5067 Madsen Road it’s just a two-minute drive up from the intersection of Highway 95 and Highway 93.

When Tim MacIntosh’s grandfather David Macintosh died, the elderly man’s voice and penchant for storytelling passed away with him.

Tim had always meant to record David telling his wildest stories – like how he’d once severed his Achilles tendon and was doctored up with a tendon from a donor kangaroo. David swore he needed special shoes because he was part marsupial, but Tim never knew for sure if he was hearing a tall tale or a medical marvel.

David was also a physician on a ship in the Second World War and did highly-classified coding and de-coding work, which made for more fascinating stories later in his life.

But Tim never got around to making that recording of his beloved grandfather.

“I don’t have that voice of his, and I miss it,” he said.

Now Tim, a carpenter and musician turned oral historian, is making it his mission to document other people’s loved ones to keep others from experiencing the regret he feels. He wants to ensure that the eldest generations can continue sharing their stories with the loved ones they will one day leave behind.

Tim encourages “the younger generation to get the older generation to tell stories as sort of a memorial-type way of recording histories for families.”

Sitting down with someone who was alive long before you to hear their histories and to consider how drastically the world has changed over time “is actually just really fascinating,” he said.

For instance, one woman he interviewed talked about discovering her Métis heritage later in life and her reflections on connecting with her culture. A gentleman he spoke with shared about being raised “in a plywood shack, basically, with a whole bunch of siblings.”

Tim is intrigued by stories of long ago and how those who experienced such a different past navigate today’s world.

“It’s really interesting to see the arc of these lives and what was important to them in those times. It’s humbling. It’s just really interesting looking across time, across the culture,” he said.

Valley Greenways Trail Alliance (CVGWTA) receives about their project, the MarkinMacPhail Westside Legacy Trail (MMWLT), from trail-users is that it’s more of a challenge than they’d realized. The MMWLT certainly has its fair share of hills; it’s a multi-use paved trail that, when completed, will connect the communities of Fairmont Hot Springs and Invermere. But, users say-- and they almost always do-- is it ever rewarding to reach the summit. Because at the highest point of the MMWLT is a beautiful view of the Columbia Valley, and the community that helped build the Trail. At the highest point, the hard work is over, and boy, did it ever pay off.

Currently, the MMWLT is close to reaching its own summit as the project nears completion. Over $7.1 million of the $8 million fundraising goal has been raised from cash, inkind donations, and grants. Roughly half of the total raised has been from grants, while the other half has come from over 900 generous donors.

On each of these purchases, the donor’s name(s) is inscribed, along with a short dedication as well. Donors can also support the trail by purchasing a meter of trail for $200, or by making a donation of any amount online.

For every donation $200 or more, a name of your choice will be added to the donor wall that will be installed at the Fairmont trail head once the trail is complete. For donations $200 or more, a charitable tax receipt will also be issued.

he Rockies head into the 2019 – 2020 KIJHL hockey season with a vision of delivering an exciting product both on and off the ice. As the team continues to salute its 40-year anniversary the focus will be on creating new history and unparalleled achievements.

It takes a community to ice this team and we are grateful to be supported by the Columbia Valley; from the coaching staff, board members, volunteers, billet families, sponsors right down to every fan that has attended our games or supported out fundraising efforts.

A lot has been happening during the off season to lay the groundwork for success in the upcoming season. With a consistent return of coaching staff, the scouting team has been very active. Head Coach Wade Dubielewicz has confidence in his returning Rockies as well as a number of exciting new player additions.

A shout out goes to the Eddie Mountain arena staff, as Colin, Rob, Stan and Jye have been working hard preparing the facility for the upcoming season. Fans will notice big improvements at the rink that will provide a much better game day experience.

The Rockies are welcoming back World Cup ski champion Manny Osborne-Paradis as their ambassador. Manny brings a wealth of experience that he shares with the players, staff and volunteers. He played many sports as a kid growing up and can be seen every now and then donning the hockey gear as part of his training for his chosen discipline of ski racing.

The team is currently planning activities and working with our sponsors as this season approaches. Recently Rockies players participated in the Canada Day parade with members from Windermere Valley Minor Hockey. A team of volunteers and players will be selling Rockies Gold Raffle tickets at various locations during the summer including the Invermere Farmers market every Saturday. Tickets are $10 each and the winner will receive $10,000 cash to be drawn on September 21.

The Annual Bull Riding in The Rockies event will be held Friday July 19. Tickets

are on sale now. As our biggest fundraiser of the year for our non-profit, it never disappoints with the top Bull Riders and Bulls in the world followed by KIXXSIN performing at the dance.

The Rockies will be hosting their annual golf tournament September 14 at CopperPoint Golf course. It is open to the public so make sure to call CopperPoint (to register…foursome is limiting to groups and no couples or singles?) to get your foursome in. There will be great prizes and you will have the opportunity to meet the team and play with a Rockies hockey player!

The 2019-20 season starts September 2 with Main Camp at the Eddie Mountain Arena and fans are welcome to drop by and watch their Rockies on the ice as summer festivities wind down. Stay tuned on social media for updates.

Tip of the hat to bats at upcoming fest

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Bats. Everyone has an opinion on them. They’re either cool or creepy, make you curious or callous.

But if you want to learn more about these controversial creatures, come to the Bat Fest, hosted by the Lake Windermere District Rod & Gun Club.

The club is hosting the event as part of their year of events celebrating the club’s 100th anniversary. The event includes a barbecue and guest speaker Leigh Anne Isaac, Kootenay Community Bat Project biologist. Ms. Isaac will talk about her favourite subject, then everyone will head into the field in the later evening to hear the bats with the help of special recording equipment.

Bats are a species at risk in B.C., meaning they are vulnerable or threatened of being wiped out. According to the Community Bat programs of B.C., bats perform an important role in the ecosystem, controlling nocturnal insect populations and cycling nutrients from wetlands to forests. The winged mammals are facing several serious threats, including White-nose syndrome, a fungus that is killing millions of the bats in North America. The disease has not been spotted in B.C. yet, though it was found in Washington in 2016. Community bat programs in B.C. are involved in monitoring for the disease in the province. Other threats include wind farms, habitat loss and, as minor as it sounds, house cats are actually the primary cause of bat moralities reported to the BC Community Bat Program.

The Bat Fest takes place Saturday, July 20th. It is set to begin at 4 p.m. with bat house building for people who pre-registered prior to the Pioneer’s story. Rick Hoar, club president, invites anyone interested to come to the dinner and talk, scheduled to be held at the Nature Trust of BC Columbia River Wetlands Edgewater property.

P IONEER C LASSIFIEDS Auger, Philippe Aimé Joseph 1954 – 2019

Philippe Aimé Joseph Auger was born on March 29, 1954 in Edmonton, Alberta. At the age of 65 he passed away into the presence of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on June 19, 2019 in Invermere, British Columbia.

Phil was born and raised in Edmonton, which is where he met and married Holly. They moved their young family to Brisco, BC in 1993.

Music was his life. Phil started playing piano as a child and continued on loving to play, sing and compose songs as well. He was a man of many talents and a hard worker, pursuing several different occupations during his lifetime.

The one thing about Phil is that everyone was his friend. He was a people person, and no matter who you were, after you met him you were no longer a stranger. It was the conversations and relationships he had during his life that meant so much to him, and his love for others was undeniable. Because he touched so many with his friendship, he will be dearly missed.

Phil is survived by the love of his life, Holly, his children Vanessa (Karl), Bryan (Jen), Alanna (Everett) and Renata (Casey), his twelve grandchildren, Joshua, Shannah, Kate, Jesse, Daniel, Raine, Benjamin, Reneah, Jordan, Kiersten, Jaeden and Tennessee, and his six siblings, Gisele, Anita, Lucille, Yvette, Marc and Lise. Phil is predeceased by his parents Aimé and Olive and his niece Caroline.

A “Celebration of Life” for Phil was held on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at 1 pm at Steele Heights, Baptist Church, 5812 - 149 Ave, Edmonton, AB. There will also be another memorial held on Saturday, July 20, 1 pm at Valley Christian Assembly, 4814 Highway Drive, Windermere, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations would be most welcome to the Canucks Autism Network working in the Interior Region of BC www.canucksautism.ca.

Janzen, Ross Kevin January 11, 1963 – June 7, 2019

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Ross Janzen. He lost his valiant battle with cancer surrounded by family. He was predeceased by his father John Janzen.

Ross was born and raised in Oliver. He was passionate and very knowledgeable about the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, gardening and all sports, hockey being his number one. Ross was a talented craftsman who took pride in his work.

He was always willing to help others, selfless in his attitude right until the end.

A huge Life Saving Cheers to Christy Way of Spruce Grove RV Park for using her Respiratory Therapist skills on Canada Day. On that day, a male rafter was enjoying the spirit of the day and became unresponsive and was in respiratory distress. Christy came on the scene moments later, established and maintained an open airway, provided oxygen, and assisted the ambulance service by continuing to provide her medical skills throughout transport to Invermere Hospital.

She also offered support and assistance to the hospital personnel once the patient had been transferred into their care.

Kudos for saving this man’s life!

Support workers are on call on week days and evenings, weekends and statutory holidays. When called out, the support worker provides a confidential emergency service for the provision of temporary, safe and supportive accommodation for women and their children who have experienced or who are at risk of abuse, threats or violence. Support workers will provide transportation, information, support and, when appropriate, follow-up support for women.

Brokeness and beauty

By Pastor Murray Wittke Valley Christian Assembly Ours is a broken but beautiful world. Everyday brokenness clamours for our attention with jarring images of human suffering and pain. And yet beauty also quietly surrounds us, always available, awaiting our response. Where’s your attention focused? What occupies your thoughts, brokenness or beauty?

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. When He finished He saw that it was all very good; not only good for something, it looked good, it was beautiful. But why make everything so beautiful when it wasn’t necessary? Because the beauty of the earth was the joyful expression of God’s heart. Beauty is God’s gift of love, waiting to be received and enjoyed, if only we’ll take the time to linger and look. But beauty is not merely to

be looked at, beauty is to be looked through. When we gaze at a the sun sinking behind the Purcells, listen to the red wing blackbirds sing on the wetlands, or smell the fragrance of lilacs, our hearts perceive something richer and deeper through them. Through their beauty we catch glimpses of God’s own beauty, love, and grace.

But like fire, brokenness continually draws our attention, obscures our view, and darkens our horizons. Fire comes unexpectedly, and suddenly trees centuries old go up in smoke, and pristine forests are reduced to ash. Life can be like that; tragedy strikes, accidents happen, marriages fail, and dreams are shattered. It’s tempting to focus only on the destruction, yet amid brokenness beauty returns. Much like the sea of purple fireweed that springs up and covers a burned over hillside, the persistent presence of beauty in our world reassures us with whispers of hope.

Pause to reflect upon the beauty of our earthly home and you’ll sense it calling to something deep within you.

Beauty is God’s open invitation to return to the source of all beauty, especially when our lives and hearts are broken. God promises to give “beauty for ashes” to all those who mourn. Our Creator is a good and beautiful God, trust Him. He makes everything beautiful in his time.

This past Tuesday morning we had the perfect weather for our lake sampling. Joining us we had Tara Booty who grew up in Windermere, spent time away from the Valley and has now returned to live in Edgewater. Tara is a mother of three and works at David Thompson Secondary School with special needs students. As well, Tara has done work in wetland ecology and is working on a BSc. in General Biology. Living so close to the river, she enjoys kaya-

king down the beautiful Columbia Wetlands.

Wetlands are a very important part of our ecosystem because they act like a sponge, absorbing pollutants, adding nutrients and improving water quality. They are extremely productive ecosystems but have limitations based on the water flowing into them. Being upstream, residents and guests of Lake Windermere share the responsibility of ensuring the water condition leaving the lake is the same as when it came in.

As the heat of the summer approaches, many of us will be looking to cool down in Lake Windermere! Wherever you choose to swim along the lake, Swimmer’s Itch can affect you.

You may have heard the term “Swimmers Itch”, but what exactly is it? Swimmer’s Itch is caused by a parasite that lives in many lakes in B.C. and across North America. It makes its home in snails and waterfowl. When the parasite leaves a snail and is looking for a new home, it can sometimes mistake swimmers for waterfowl. When you comes out of the water, these microscopic parasites may be in the film of water on their skin and as the water dries, the parasite will try to burrow into the skin. This causes an allergic reaction, which results in itchiness or a rash.

“The parasite is harmless and cannot

live in humans, but the itchy rash it can cause is annoying, and if scratching breaks the skin, an infection can occur as with any break in the skin,” says Ken Christian, Director of Health Protection for Interior Health. While it can be commonly found in any lake or pond, there are a few simple steps you can take to prevent swimmer’s itch: • Avoid swimming or wading in marshy areas where snails are commonly found.

• After swimming, shower immediately with clean water.

• If a shower is not possible, towel dry briskly.

• Wash your swim suits and beach towels often.
