Bolting to bodybuilding success

By Dauna Ditson reporter@@columbiavalleypioneer.com Invermere’s Tanelle Bolt gives the fiercest of hugs. She is a lean and sinewed force to be reckoned with – even when she likes you.

Ms. Bolt said she is Canada’s first competing female wheelchair bodybuilder. At the 2019 TNT Muscle Showdown in Edmonton on Saturday, June 22nd, Ms. Bolt flexed and posed in a category all her own, earning a first-place medal and a tiara.

“They were looking for a woman to open up the doors to the competition in Canada,” she said, adding that the organizers extended a personal invitation to her 78 days before the show.

Ms. Bolt, who started the Recreation Adapted Society (RAD), said yes because she was looking for “a Hail Mary initiative” to promote the society and fill its emptied-out coffers. Currently RAD owns around $70,000 in specialty equipment that it rents out so those with disabilities can do things they otherwise couldn’t – like stand to golf or sit to ski or bike on a mountain trike.

She also said she did the fitness show: “so that there’s never a person than can look at me and tell me that they can’t until the end of time. I had four shoulder dislocations, and I hadn’t been to the gym for two and half years. Till the end of time I can always tell somebody: ‘Get up. Get your *** off the couch. What’s your excuse?’”

Five years ago, Ms. Bolt jumped off a bridge on an adventure with her friends and hit something terribly unforgiving on the way down. She has been in a wheelchair with a spinal-cord injury ever since and has had to adapt to her new body, one that comes with limits she is constantly pushing against.

On stage flexing her tanned and ripped muscles for the appreciative crowd of 300 people with “smoke guns and lights going off,” Ms. Bolt was overcome with emotion.

“I can really see my injury level and how it’s contoured my body, but it’s also still my body. I can’t hate it... I’m not ashamed of the body I currently sit in,” she said. “It was almost nice to see it in that light, you know, done up and tanned and together. And that’s the best I’ve felt about my body since my injury.”

This wasn’t Ms. Bolt’s first experience posing on stage, but it was her first time doing so in her chair.

Just before her accident, Ms. Bolt had spent $10,000 and a year in the gym to enter a fitness competition where she “just blend(ed) into a row of pretty girls” and felt invisible.

“People are a lot more genuine now. Not so fake to your face. When you walk around looking like a fitness Barbie, you get a lot of fake to your face,” she said. “I’m

Ms. Bolt was back in the Valley for a few days after the competition but is now on another adventure hand-cycling and paddling from Revelstoke to Nelson with Kootenay Adaptive Sport Association.

“Fitness for me is full of endorphins. All it does when you train for something like this is fill you with all of the good feelings. It helps stress and anxiety and PTSD,” she said. “Push your limits. Push what you think you can do.”

Hobo the eagle returned to the wild after run-in with train

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com With a swoop of her wings, Hobo the Eagle took off into the sky after five and a half months of recovery at the Invermere Veterinary Hospital.

Hobo unintentionally hitched a ride on a northbound train on January 14th.

Judy Ellison, technician at the clinic, says it appears the juvenile eagle was scavenging a deer carcass lying beside the tracks when a train came down the tracks.

“As the train came, she swooped up and it hit her,” Ms. Ellison describes.

This type of incident happens more often than you might think, Ms. Ellison says. She can think of at least four other birds that have been hit by trains and many, many more who end up at the clinic because of run-ins with man-made structures such as power lines, as well as vehicles. The team sees a wide range of birds too, from tiny pygmy owls to giant golden eagles.

Hobo was stuck to the train from Canal Flats all the way to Radium, where the engine stopped and the bird was removed. She was brought in with a fractured left wing and a fractured left leg. Dr. Mark Zhender got her in and out of surgery the same day, with the good doctor putting pins in her wing and splinting her fractured leg.

Hobo was kept in an isolated, quiet room in the clinic. After the pins were removed, she was moved to the flight cage where she worked to recover her strength. The goal is to keep the birds as wild as possible, so there is no coddling, and as minimal time between humans and birds as possible.

“It took her a few weeks to get off the ground,” Ms. Ellison says. “She couldn’t hop around, she had to get her strength back. Then all of a sudden you go in to feed her, and she’s up on a perch.”

This past week, June 24th through June 30th, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 88 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, June 24th a liquor store in Invermere reported three incidents of shoplifting over the weekend. An officer viewed surveillance footage and was able to identify the female who was alleged to have committed the thefts. A 60-year-old female was arrested for the thefts and released on a Promise to Appear in court at a later date.

• On Tuesday, June 25th, an officer was conducting patrols in Invermere when he observed a GMC Envoy being driven by a female he knew to be a prohibited driver. The officer conducted a traffic stop and confirmed the female was prohibited from driving. The female was arrested for prohibited driving and released on a Promise to Appear in court at a later date.

• On Wednesday, June 26th, police responded to a motorcycle accident at the corner of 13th Street and 10th Avenue in Invermere. A motorcyclist was turning when his BMW motorcycle slid from under him and landed on his leg. The motorcyclist was transported to the hospital to be assessed.

• On Wednesday, June 26th a resident on Mountainview Place in Fairmont Hot Springs reported someone had stolen a set of Taylormade golf clubs from his vehicle sometime overnight.

• On Thursday, June 27th a black 2018 Jeep Wrangler was reported stolen from a residence on Lakeview Meadows in Invermere sometime overnight. The key fob for the Jeep and a wallet had been left inside the vehicle. On the same

day the owner of the wallet discovered his credit card had been used in Calgary. The following morning two adult males were arrested by Calgary police in possession of the stolen Jeep.

Both suspects were from Calgary.

• On Thursday, June 27th, a resident on Ledgerock Ridge in Invermere reported someone had gone through his unlocked pickup truck and stole several tools.

• On Friday, June 28th, a resident on Cantebury Close in Invermere reported someone had rummaged through her unlocked vehicle sometime overnight on June 26th and stole several gift cards.

• On Friday, June 28th, a resident at Westside Park reported someone had taken her Honda Civic for a joyride sometime overnight on June 26th. The vehicle was returned to the general area but parked it in a different spot. The owner had left her vehicle unlocked with the keys inside the car.

• On Saturday, June 29th, Columbia Valley RCMP received a report that a small sailboat had broken free of its mooring overnight on Lake Windermere near Baltac Road.

The boat had a Timber Ridge sticker on the hull.

• On Saturday, June 29th at about 10 p.m., police were called to the Invermere Hostel for a male who was causing problems. Officers attended and located the intoxicated male sitting outside the hostel. The male was arrested for causing a disturbance and being intoxicated in a public place and held in cells until he was sober.

• On Sunday, June 30th at 4:30 p.m., police responded to a single vehicle collision two kilmetres up the Kootenay River Forest Service Road near Canal Flats. The driver of a Kia Sorrento failed to negotiate a corner and went off the road and down an eight-foot embankment. A passenger in the back seat was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

. . . ‘Hobo’ from 3 The young eagle spent the next couple months recovering, to the point she was flaying laps around the 20 foot high, 20 foot wide, 100-foot long flight cage specially built for injured bird recovery. To confirm the bird was ready to be released, Ms. Ellison describes, Dr. Zhender tied a rope to Hobo and watched her fly outside.

“She did extremely well,” she says. By law, a bird must be released in the same area it was found, so on Tuesday, June 25th, Hobo was brought back to the Canal Flats area and released.

“She flew in an arc. She landed up on a bluff. We went up there, walked towards her and she flew again.

She flew higher and higher, then disappeared.”

It was exciting to watch yet another bird recovered and released back into the wild, Ms. Ellison says. The team at the Invermere Veterinary Hospital has had more than 60 of these releases in the last eight or so years of operation.

Public donations help keep the birds fed. Any wild meat is welcome, from mice to gophers to fish and wild game. That is the best food for these wild birds.

A nonprofit society has recently formed to raise funds for the wild bird recovery efforts. Money will go towards the cost of treating the birds, including medications, surgery, and staff time. They have launched their first fundraiser – a raffle for a printed photograph, 16x25,

Canal Flats continues to be abuzz with activity as summer approaches.

The following issues, as well as others, were attended to by Canal Flats council at the regular council meeting on June 24th: Council prioritized meeting requests with provincial ministries for the upcoming Union of British Columbia Municipalities conference being held in September. Top of the list is a meeting with representatives from the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation. Also prioritized are requests being sent to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations and the Ministry of Jobs, Trades and Technology. If the meetings are approved and scheduled, municipal council members have 15 minutes to outline priorities and action items with ministry officials and staff.

The council supported an application to the Agricultural Land Commission by CF Bidco Property Holdings Ltd to subdivide two lots within the Agricultural Land Reserve.

Council approved a request to the Ministry of Attorney General to allow the Village to practice bylaw adjudication. Bylaw adjudication is an alternative to expensive court cases involving bylaw infractions with fines of $500 or less.

Council resolved to support an application for a Nominal Rent Tenure for the Tilley Memorial boat launch which, if approved, will make maintaining the boat launch much easier.

A contract for Kootenay River Flood Risk Assessment and Flood Mapping Update in the amount of $168,000 was approved. The contract is fully funded by grants.

Council deferred a vote on an Open Burning bylaw as there were concerns with some of the details.

Council agreed to an additional review and will consider the bylaw in the very near future.

River safety 101

We went on a canoe paddle down the Columbia River last weekend, launching in Invermere and taking a leisurely four-hour trip downriver to Radium Hot Springs.

The scenery was breathtaking, the peace was soothing, and the picnic lunch stop in the middle was relaxing on the splendidly-warm mud beach.

We are not expert paddlers by any means. We drop our outdated, tippy canoe into the local waters a couple times each year. And this year, I am ashamed to admit, was our very first time doing the Invermere to Radium route. The day was perfect for it - overcast, warm, a few short bouts of summer rain, and a burst of sunlight as we neared the end of our trip.

But I could imagine, as our two children rocked the boat unintentionally back and forth, careening us close to the tipping point multiple times, how quickly a perfect excursion could turn into a terrifying ordeal. The water was COLD. Once the Toby Creek’s glacial hues blended into the Columbia’s, the tepid temperature reminded me we were in a real river, not some Disney ride. We all were wearing lifejackets, everyone in the boat knows, to varying degrees, how to swim, and the shore was never far away.

But still. The chance of a mishap is high in the water, no matter how experienced you are. And opportunities to play in the lakes and rivers of the Columbia Valley are everywhere, so it is a wise choice to make sure you are educated on water safety, and that those you love know what to do should they run into trouble on the river.

Columbia River Paddle reached out to us too late this week for a story on their upcoming River Wise program. But not too late to write an editorial on the course.

They are offering the session for kids from age 10-17 this July. Program coordinator Brenna Kelly says kids can learn about the rivers in a fun, safe, and educational program that was put together by Rescue Canada, the nationally-recognized association that trains law enforcement officers, firefighters, search and rescue personnel and anyone else who may require training. The program imparts on kids a healthy respect for the rivers, so they can enjoy fun-filled, safe adventures, and identify and avoid any dangers that may be present. Ms. Kelly says by the end of the day, children should be able to identify and avoid hazards, understand river hydrology as well as wade and swim through class one rapids.

If my kids were old enough for this program, I would be signing them up in a paddle’s stroke of time. After all, I don’t want them to be scared of our rivers. I want them to embrace the Kootenay lifestyle, and be secure knowing they have the knowledge to stay safe on the water.

Westside sprawl Dear Editor: The recent OCP’s support of extensive development on large tracts of Westside land is nothing short of frightening. The ecologically rich and rare natural resources of this area play an integral role within our valley community and should NOT be compromised. The 2008 OCP definitively recognized the importance of keeping the west side of Lake Windermere as natural and rural as possible, and supported this mandate. Why the about face?

Could it be that a single large landowner, in his persistent quest for development, is successfully wearing down the guiding principals of the RDEK? Let’s hope not.

From the arts to the environment, youth programs, recreation and historical projects, Anne has enriched the social and cultural infrastructure of the Columbia Valley and the community of Edgewater in so many ways,” says RDEK Electoral Area G Director Gerry Wilkie.

Ms. Jardine came to the Valley in 1979 and taught at David Thompson Senior Secondary for 31 years. She built her home in Edgewater in 1993 and has been an active volunteer in the community ever since.

She has served as president of the Columbia Valley Arts Council, has been an executive member of the Columbia Valley Music Society, is a tireless advocate for the Pynelogs Arts Centre, is a member of the Lost Bell Singers, and is a founding member and current Board Chair of the Steamboat Mountain Music Society.

“Her background in musical theatre and passion for performance arts has brought many musical and theatrical performances to life in Edgewater and across the Valley,” adds Mr. Wilkie.

out the East and West Kootenay. She was a founding member of the Kirksland Restoration Society and in this role has advocated for the acquisition, preservation and sensible use of rangeland. She helped rebuild the remaining section of the Luxor Trail with CBT Youth Link and other local volunteers.

Jardine was the first coordinator for the Edgewater Youth Centre, has been a director for the Edgewater Recreation Society for 20 years and is the current president of the local Retired Teachers Association. “Her dedication and list of volunteer activities is astounding and it is wonderful to be able to recognize her and thank her for everything she has done for our Valley,” adds Mr. Wilkie.

Ms. Jardine was honoured at a volunteer celebration in connection with the Area G Town Hall Meeting Tuesday, June 25th in Edgewater. Following the volunteer of the year celebration, attendees to the Town Hall Meeting heard presentations on the Five-Year Financial Plan, Solid Waste Management Plan Review, new Recycling Depot, Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund, Baptiste Lake Dam Project and FireSmart basics.

Erin Palashniuk and her family are starting Sweet Mountain Shave Ice, a mobile snack shack that will offer Hawaiian treats to keep the Valley cool this summer.

“We got the idea from when we were in Hawaii,” Ms. Palashniuk said. “We travel a lot when we’re not working. We’ve spent a lot of time in Hawaii over the years and really enjoy eating shave ice.”

Shave ice is finely-scraped ice covered with all sorts of flavours and toppings.

“It’s more of a dessert-type thing than a snow cone,” she said. “The ones that we are going to be making are naturally based and they have fruit on them, so it’s a different kind of a summer treat for people to enjoy.”

Their pina colada offering, for instance, will be topped with coconut cream, coconut shavings and pineapple.

The flavours they will serve include coconut, coffee, chai, orange creamsicle and strawberry banana.

Each shave ice can be ordered with ice cream or on its own for a dairy-free treat.

“There are so many people that are allergic to dairy nowadays, and we thought it would be a great option for people,” she said. “On a hot day, there’s nothing like sitting down and having one of those.

It’s just really, really refreshing and super tasty.”

They won’t have pop for sale but will serve kombucha and water.

Besides allowing her family to have their fill of their preferred summer treats, Ms. Palashniuk is also looking forward to teaching her children – Hannah (20) and Bryce (13) – how to run the business.

She and her husband Joe own The Gateway Motel in Radium and want to pass on their entrepreneurial skills as Hannah and Bryce take over the shave-ice operation.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to teach them a little bit about running the books and how to keep track of their sales and all those types of things,” she said.

While Hannah has been at school studying nursing, Bryce has been home and immersed in the business.

“He’s been involved helping develop

Sweet Mountain Shave Ice will be roaming between Cenotaph Park, James Chabot beach and Radium’s Market and Music on Main this summer. They expect to be up and running this week.

The District of Invermere council had concerns with how neighbouring businesses at Cenotaph Park might react to having the mobile vendor springing up near their shops so they asked Ms. Palashniuk to check in with them.

Parking was their only concern, she said, after canvassing the stores.

“They were all in favour of it. They really thought that it would draw more traffic into stores potentially and it would vitalize the downtown core more because having mobile businesses is more of an attraction. People see it and go ‘what’s that?’ and then maybe they’ll go into the store that’s nearby.”

As for the parking situation, councillor Greg Anderson said the mobile trailer is “smaller than you’d think” and won’t take up an entire parking space.

“I think it will add vibrancy to the Cenotaph Park for sure,” he said moments before council voted to allow Sweet Mountain Shave Ice to test out their downtown location for the summer.

The old Invermere Community Hall has seen more feet pass its doors than likely any other building in Invermere through its time. Big band dances, firemen’s balls, Rod & Gun banquets, countless wedding receptions, private and other public functions have taken place inside the green and Just looking at the building makes me tear up. I have so many fantastic memories from the community hall. Growing up dancing upstairs with brown-striped building.

But the staggering cost to renovate Apsire Dance, this became my second home with my dance family. This is the hall meant a Council decision in 2017 also where United Dance started! - Melyssa Stringer to lock and level it. After the contract was announced this spring, we asked readers for some of their favourite memories from the 72-year-old hall. The building has since been leveled.

Fil (Filmore) Coy was born in Invermere in 1922. During the Second World War, Mr. Coy joined the Air Force. After he came back to Invermere, he did carpentry for a few years with Nat Bavin. One such Harry Potter night hosted by main street fun & games. Judo Club founder reflects on old hall

By Hermann Mauthner The Debbie Seel Centre and Invermere Judo Club signs were removed from the old Community Hall/ Fire Hall before the demolition began. I admit, I did it with a heavy heart but it gave me time to reflect on many happy occasions and events of the past.

Over 50 years ago, after our arrival in Invermere, Ursel and I attended our first community dance at the hall.

Dances were great events with big crowds swinging to live bands. I learned the custom of brown paper bags and friendships and acquaintances were made. Some of them have, thankfully, lasted now for over 50 years.

The Lake Windermere Players were famous for their many plays and musicals. That is where I started my shortlived acting career, so many laughs, so much fun. Then there was the library, run by Mrs Leslie Wynder, who so warm heartedly encouraged my children to read as many books as possible in a week to win a price of 5 silver dollars.

The Invermere Judo Club had its beginning at the old high school building, later moved to J.A Laird Elementary and Invermere Elementary School. After its demolition, with the cooperative district council, the move to the Community Hall was made. We practised in the big hall, laying out 56 mats, held together with 2x4s and ropes and on the end after a good workout, as many former judokas can remember, the famous (dreaded) words “mats away.”

This lasted for years until the “new” high school was built and the Fire Hall relocated, making space in the 3 bay annex building to the hall. Again, the now DOI council generously offered this space to the Judo Club. Overjoyed and

The District will be operating a pilot project that will see the Invermere Transfer Station fully supervised and operated between set days and hours of operation.

With some donations and great pricing of materials from local businesses we constructed a “floating” floor, a 2x6 wall with 6” insulation and ply covering. It was the best dojo in the Kootenays, admired by many other clubs and we called it “Debbie Seel Centre” in honour of our Debbie Seel, the first woman Canadian Judo Champion in the west.

Our membership over the years are numbering anywhere from 50 to 100. Many successful Canadian, Provincial and recreational Judokas started and trained at this dojo. Those were happy and memorable times and years.

We also shared the mats with other clubs like dance clubs, Tai Chi, Karate, Kickboxing, Jiu Jitsu, mother and tots and other activities.

Now we are at the new community centre, laying out mats and rolling them up to put away till next practise, memories are to stay. See you on the tatame.

The Transfer Station will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday and all users will be required to take solid waste to the Columbia Valley Landfill located on Windermere Loop Road. The Columbia Valley Landfill is open 7 days a week 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Household garbage is free.

Calculus this year!

Throughout my reflection, one person kept coming to mind: my Opa. He was the smartest guy I knew. He was a successful metallurgical engineer who was thoughtful, meticulous, strategic, and would give these words of advice when faced with a challenge or problem. He would say, “Look at it, study it and figure it out.” It wasn’t until recently that I was able to connect and understand what this phrase meant and the impact it has on life.

Grads, we have spent the past 18 years looking at things, studying them and trying to figure them out.

Let’s think about all of our accomplishments, all the important things that we figured out over the years: like Pokemon cards, the DS, tech decks, Wii Sports, Carter’s Kendama, the fidget spinner, and parents I’m sure you all know, we have mastered the smartphone.

We also applied my Opa’s words into our schooling.

We walked into Kindergarten with wide eyes, full of curiosity, so ready to explore everything school had to offer.

Who knew that the sandbox was actually helping us be creative, form relationships, as well as build our immune systems. Little did I know that the neighborhood cats also enjoyed the sandbox, and much like Santa’s elves left us treasures to play with. There was so much to figure out in elementary school.

We then continued on this path in grade 8.

Good afternoon parents, staff, friends and a special shout out to my Grandma.

On behalf of the Graduating class of 2019, I would like to thank you for being here to celebrate with us. I am honored to be representing our class as Valedictorian.

There are many of you who could be up here speaking today. And, to be honest, there were times over the last few weeks, while studying for Chemistry and Physics, that I wish you were!

I have spent a lot of time reflecting on what I wanted to say today. Anyone who knows me would think this task would be easy. Here is a comment from one of my report cards, “While Davis sometimes lets his social side get in the way of doing Math in class, he is still doing quite well. He is starting to recognize when he needs to put the goofiness aside and focus.” Some may think this comment is from one of my elementary report cards…. they would be mistaken: I sure did have a great time in

REID, Roy Edwin December 27, 1932 - June 21, 2019 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father Roy Edwin Reid on Friday, June 21, 2019 at Jackson House Long Term Care in Ashcroft. Roy was 86 years of age.

Dad is survived by his sister Donna (Doug) Simmonds, brother Donny (Donna) Reid, children Mary Anne (Michael) States, Dixie Lynne (Dave) Rice, Paulet (Steve) Rice, Melinda (Terry) Kinaschuk and Wayne (Soulmate Christine) Reid, as well as sixteen grandchildren, twenty seven great grand children and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Billy and Annie Reid, his wife, and love of his life, Esther Reid, his very special mother-in-law Mary Isaacson, grandson George Arand, brothers and sister in laws Cecil and Marg Reid, James and Beaula Reid, Teddy Reid and his nephew Richard Reid.

Roy was born in Rockford Saskatchewan on December 27, 1932. He worked in Invermere and he and Esther married there in June of 1959. Together they raised a family, moving around Saskatchewan. Until they moved to Savona where their son Wayne was born. Dad worked at the mill in Savona as a forklift driver, a job which he loved until he retired. After retirement, dad’s passions were driving, spending time with his family, and listening to and making music. Music played a large part in Roy and Esther’s lives and they raised their family to have a deep love of anything musical. We will always remember Dad as having the most amazing voice.

Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, July 27th at Clemes Hall in Spences Bridge.

There has been a great sadness in our family with the passing of a wonderful husband, father and grandfather! William H. (Bill Brown) November 14, 2018. He was born to a family of 8 in a suburb of Winnipeg Manitoba on December 1, 1926. Bill was a very active person. He played and excelled in many sports including bowling, curling, and skiing. He once owned a ski resort, loved to skate and was scouted and signed with New York Rangers. However, when the time came to fulfill his contract, he was on a ship to England. World War II had begun and when that was over he signed to help fight the war in the Pacific!

He was one of the seven sea going St. James sailors sailing on same ship and they helped take the surrender at Hong Kong. His first love in sports was golf. He was Manitoba Jr. Champ at 15 and much later turned pro and taught at many courses including courses in Arizona where the family spent 30 wonderful winters.

Bill held many jobs including being a superintendent of transportation for the Canadian National Railway (C.N.R). He owned a real estate company, a manufacturing company that built screens for oil rigs, a Subaru dealership and owned a barber shop which he bought for his barber who was down on his luck.

Bill liked people and helped when he could. He was generous (The cheque is in the mail) lots of fun (come for a sleepover).

His wife Maureen 67 1/2 years was 15 when they met. They travelled many miles together. His pride and love of family was great.

Hoberg, Barbara Ellen

October 5, 1943 – May 14, 2019 Barbara was born on the 5th of October, 1943 in Trochu, Alberta. She lived a busy and interesting life; she had a successful career and enjoyed travelling around the world for work and pleasure. Barbara enjoyed her sports, playing softball, volleyball, curling, and she absolutely loved golfing!

Retiring to Radium Hot Springs, BC in 1999, she was a well-respected member of the community. She was a member of The Rotary Club, Radium Hot Springs Seniors Club, and an integral part of the ladies golf community; most notably, with her friend Jan, Barbara founded the annual ladies tournament, formerly known as the Cracked Wheat Ladies Open, in 2000.

Barbara passed away peacefully in her Beaumont home on the 14th of May, 2019 at the age of seventy-five. She is fondly remembered and deeply missed by her daughter, Shannon McCann, and son-in-law, Doug Choptiany, her grandchildren, Shane, Andrew, Michael, Craige, Caleb, Alex, Hailey-Dawn, Brady, and Abby.

Barbara is also survived and missed by her siblings, Mary, Ethel (Norm), Muriel, Lorna, Gerald (Helen), Dennis (Sylvia), Philip, and Helen (Rod), as well as her nieces, nephews, and many loving friends.

She is predeceased by her parents, Lorne & Helen Hoberg, and two siblings, Arthur Hoberg and Mildred (Pete) Chekowski.

An open house style Celebration of Life will be held for Barbara on the 1st of July 2019 in Beaumont, Alberta from 4:00 pm onwards. If you would like further details and/or to send condolences you may email: inmemory.barbarahoberg@gmail.com .

FAITH Dying well

By Pastor Daren Wride transitional lead pastor Lake Windermere Alliance Church “I don’t believe in it, because you’re not around to know that it’s happened.

I can’t say anything about it because I’m not prepared for it.” That’s the entire chapter on death from The Philosophy of Andy Warhol.

I was once on the Cemetery Committee a town. (If I got a loonie every time someone said “You must have pretty dead meetings,” I’d be able to buy a nice casket.)

When you’re confronted with a steadily increasing number of filled cemetery plots it’s hard to ignore the reality of death.

William Willimon observed, “Despite the quest for

wellness, risk assessment analysis, and the good works of consumer advocates, nobody has yet created a way to make life last forever. You and I will die. So we might as well get on with the only really pressing business there is: figuring out how to die well. “ Know anyone who died well? Gracefully, fearlessly, even with expectancy? I’ve had the privilege of knowing many.

You might also recognize that Jesus died well. “When he suffered he made no threats. Instead he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross…”

In fact, the Bible says Jesus died for you. He died in our place to pay the price for all the wrong things we’ve done. He died and rose again in order to take away the sting of the death you and I will one day face, and the fear of death that robs us of so much joy in the present.

He died and rose so that we could die well, full of hope and without fear.

Trust him with your life, trust him with your death and beyond.

. . . ‘Valedictorian’ from 14 There were lots of things to look at, study, and figure out. Our natural curiosity seemed to have a resurgence. New school, new teachers, new friends, new sports and personal freedoms. But with all those great changes came a more intense workload, a demand for a strong work ethic, and suddenly, studying took on a new definition. The thought of potential failure brought on pressures that we had not experienced before. Then grade 11 hit us like a wave, and for some, it was a tsunami. Homework, studying, homework, and more homework. Gone were the days of not preparing for tests. Believe me, many of us tried this strategy. Let’s just say good thing there were retests.

Well, now we are here, full of knowledge and faced with the daunting task of having to figure it out. Up until now, school has been the most important focus in our lives. It has provided structure to our day, a place to connect, to learn, to make mistakes, and to grow.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at DTSS for your ongoing support, from early morning study sessions to the hours of coaching, and the kind words of encouragement that made all the difference.

As we move into adulthood, we need to think of all the challenges that are present in today’s world: the building of pipelines, the evolution of social media, climate change, and advancements in technolo-

gy I cannot even fathom. These tasks and others will take the talent of all of us here in the blue gowns.

Amongst us are future lawyers, doctors, engineers, carpenters, welders and more. Each and every one of us will have a vital role to play in the chapters to come. But these chapters are yet to be written. For the first time, September does not have a script. We will continue to rely on the support and guidance of our parents and family, But, our future is anchored in our ability to persevere, to be patient and kind, to seek understanding, and to be willing to make a difference. Remember, each step along the way will require careful examination. And in times of uncertainty remember the words of my Opa: take a moment to look at it, study it, and figure it out.

To the graduating class of 2019, I wish you all the best; because after today, it’s full send or no send.

Akisq’nuk celebrates grand opening of Columbia Lake Recreation Centre

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Columbia Lake Recreation Centre was officially opened last Thursday, June 27th, in a ceremony recognizing the history of the centre and the donors that made the new facility possible.

Councillor Theresa Kains welcomed the guests on behalf of Akisq’nuk Council, saying “We’re excited about this and really proud. So tell all your friends!”

Councillor Jason Nicholas was been heavily involved in the planning stages of the centre alongside economic development officer Heather Rennebohm. Mr. Nicholas remarked that the first study for this recreation centre took place in 1983, when he was just two years old.

“I took part in that study – it was two thumbs up,” he said with a grin.

In October 2017, Council approved the new rec centre and in December, the sod was turned for construction.

“Construction went by like hotcakes. Bang, bang, bang,” Mr. Nicholas described. He noted that while there have been several events and activities through the centre already, one that stood out to him was a 3-on-3 basketball tournament recently for Akisq’nuk youth.

“That made me so happy. It’s truly a dream come true,” said Mr. Nicholas.

Kathryn Teneese, Ktunaxa Nation Chair, praised the centre and the legacy of sport in the Ktunaxa.

“We know how important it is to be able to do something like sport, and we share with each other a friendly competition.

But also share with each other team building, we share with each other the idea of pride in who you are and what you’re doing.

And that’s so important,” said Ms. Teneese. “I look forward to
