Kamloops-Thompson school district commits to Vavenby Michael Potestio Kamloops This Week

The Kamloops-Thompson school board is assuring parents that schools in the North Thompson Valley will remain open this fall despite the pending mill closure in Vavenby.

Canfor Corp. will close its sawmill in Vavenby in July, eliminating 178 jobs. The company plans to sell its timber rights to Interfor Corp. for $60 million.

The school board has unanimously approved notifying parents

that Vavenby and Raft River elementary and Clearwater secondary will be staffed and operating as normal for the 2019-2020 school year.

After that, there’s plenty of uncertainty surrounding the future of those schools, board chair Kathleen Karpuk told KTW. “At that point, we’re going to be monitoring where our student numbers are,” Karpuk said. “We don’t know if families will remain.”

There are 17 students enrolled in the single-teacher Vavenby elementary — three in kindergarten,

six in Grade 2, four in Grade 3 and four in Grade 4.

There is the possibility of up to eight kindergarten students enrolling in September for the 2019-2020 school year, according to an SD73 report issued before the mill closure was announced.

The school board recently approved reconfiguring the elementary school from a K-4 to a K-7 model due to enrolment growth beginning in the 2019-2020 school The school board has unanimously approved notifying parents that Vavenby, Raft River elementary year.

Karpuk said adding Grade 5 is and Clearwater secondary will be staffed and operating as normal for the 2019-2020 school year.

Members of the British Columbia Metis Federation (BCMF) said they’re happy with the federal government’s announcement regarding the approval of the Trans Mountain Expansion project last week.

BCMF president, Keith Henry, said if the project goes forward it would mean hundreds of jobs for the group’s members.

“We’ve been working with partners all along the project corridor and we’ve been trying to make sure they know who our Metis small businesses are, who the people are looking for work, so we’re hoping that sub-contractors will hire some Metis people and that there are some contract opportunities for our small businesses,” Henry said.

“The Metis community in Clearwater, for the last couple years, have decided they want to see training, employment and procurement come out of that so we’re just hoping that this does take the next step.”

Henry added the BCMF represents roughly 800 members that live along the project corridor between the Alberta border and Vancouver.

The group gave its support to the Trans Mountain expansion project years ago and

regulatory reviews for the Trans Mountain Expansion, but there are Metis community people here that are practicing cultural things, they’re harvesting off the land, so we just want to get a better sense of that as one of the long term benefits of that project for us, getting a proper Metis land use study done here in the Clearwater area.”

“Even if (the jobs) are just short term, because the reality is some families need any job. So shortterm or not, we believe there’s going to be a couple hundred jobs for our members up and down the line; there’s a new prospect of equity sharing of the project, so we could leave some permanent resources behind for legacy cultural work we need to do and we have about 60 Metis small businesses that are all being engaged with potential sub-contract opportunities,” said Henry.

Henry emphasized the significant role the pipeline expansion

would play when it comes to Indigenous economic development, especially since many other industries in B.C. aren’t doing as well as they have in the past.

He added that members of the federation aren’t fully dependant on the project, but it’s definitely the most timely source for jobs at the present time.

COFFEE AND PARKINSON’S AND ALZHEIMER’S: Scientists at the Krembil Brain Institute in Toronto have been investigating compounds in coffee that might provide a positive therapeutic effect on these diseases. They identified a group of compounds called phenylindanes and felt that it was these chemicals that were implicated and not the caffeine. They also knew that positive effects were there whether the coffee was decaffeinated or not. The phenylindanes appeared to inhibit clumping in both the beta amyloid and tau, two protein fragments common in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The other thing they discovered was that dark-roast coffee had higher quantities of the chemical than light-roasted coffees. But as usual with ideas like these, a lot more research is needed to prove them. They want to know whether these chemicals have the ability to enter the bloodstream or cross the blood-brain barrier. It’s a tantalizing thought that the cure for these diseases could be found in the ubiquitous cup of coffee. pH: As we remember from all the chemistry courses we took in our pharmacist education, pH is all about hydrogen and hydroxide ions, the concentration of which shift depending on whether a solution is acidic or alkaline. When an acid is dissolved in water, the balance between hydrogen ions and hyroxide ions shifts and there are more hydrogen ions than hydroxide. The reverse is true with bases. A strongly acidic solution can have one hundred million million (that’s 100,000,000,000,000) times more hydrogen ions than a strongly basic solution. But pH measures alkalinity and acidity on a logarithmic scale which simplifies the expression of acidity into a number rather than using all those zeros.

• Council approved awarding a contract to Peter Truch, P. Eng for Traffic Engineering Services to complete a review and a conceptual plan on active modes connections for Park Drive, Clearwater Village Road and Old North Thompson Highway Road along Dutch Lake Beach and area.

• Council directed Administration to research and draft a bylaw with respect to the ban of single-use plastic bags in the District of Clearwater. This was an initiative of Junior Council who conducted a survey to gather public feedback. The draft bylaw is scheduled to be presented to Council in the fall.

• Council approved moving forward to complete a Road Maintenance Strategy to address the entire road network for the District. The review will include cost estimates for rehabilitation strategies, identification of schedules for rehabilitation and budgets for the entire road network and adjustments to schedules based on budget constraints, potential development and other external factors. The District will apply for matching funds for an Infrastructure planning grant of $15,000.

• Council voted in favour of making Dutch Lake Beach a dog free area effective June 30, 2019.

Council is aware of the need for alternatives for dog owners to take their dogs to places with water access.

• Council accepted the updated 2018 Statements of Financial Information as presented. The statements will be posted to the District website for public information.

• Council adopted the revised Terms of Reference for the Forestry Working Group by adding representation from Gilbert Smith Forest Products, West Fraser Timber Co. and Interfor Corporation – Adams Lake.

• Council appointed the following members to the Trails Task Force Committee for a further twoyear term: Darren Coates, Sabine Cooperman, Scott Lindeburgh, Heather MacLennan, Ron Van der Zwarn.

• Council approved an increase to taxi rates to Flag @ $3.25 and $2.40 per km which is in line with the rest of BC. • Council adopted Bylaw No. 213, 2019 Business Licensing and Regulation Amendment with respect to cannabis retail stores.

• Council adopted Bylaw No. 214, 2019 Development Procedures Amendment with respect to including Cannabis Retail Licence applications.

• Council voted in favour of providing a letter in support to the Ministry of Advanced Education in support of Yellowhead Community Services application to obtain grant funding through the Community Workforce Response Program for employment assistance services, skills training and financial supports for participants. This is in preparation for support as a result of the Canfor mill closure.

• Council directed Administration to register for a meeting with Minister Robinson at the UBCM Convention regarding the Asset Management Program and discussion of removing the propter taxation cap for the industrial properties for the satellite site in Vavenby.

• Council directed Administration to schedule a meeting with Staff of the Agriculture Land Commission at the UBCM Convention regarding secondary dwellings.

Agreements on the things that matter Editor, The Times: The Group of Twenty (G20), composed of 19 countries (including Canada) and the European Union, will meet in Osaka (Japan) June 28 and 29.

From the news, it appears they’ll be largely focusing on the ongoing trade war

between the United States and China.

But don’t be fooled by the belligerent attitude of Donald Trump or the idea some leaders won’t get along on major issues during the summit.

Because, you see, they’ll all agree as thick as thieves, be sure, on everything

that really matters: - letting the destiny of our world in the hands of rich people, banks and corporations; - despoiling poor countries with a sophisticated set of economic, political and military measures to subdue them, stop their march towards

democracy and justice and reduce populations to poverty and obedience; - maintaining democracy in its embryonic state in rich countries and doing everything to stop it in the poorest countries, by private control of information and entertainment in

the rich ones, by force and intimidation in the poorest ones; - and at all cost, preventing the sharing of powers that would lead to real democracy – direct democracy – and thus to equality and justice.

I can already hear someone asking, “But what can we do?”

Yes, another sawmill has bit the dust. The Vavenby Canfor mill is shut down forever, or so they say.

So how in the hell did we come to this?

Years ago the Social Credit government, under WAC Bennet put in a Tree Farm system for management.

Despite the flaws and corruption involved (Sommers et al) there

was, properly managed, a fairly good case for this “forests forever” style of management.

Time for too many time it was the tail wagging the dog— look at the mighty Macmillan Bloedel that rose to great heights then phoenix like, self destructed almost as quickly.

However, the Social Credit government put in rules about sawmills etc, that ensured that timber harvested had to be processed close to the source etc.

Generally both succeeding Social Credit and NDP govern-

ments adhered to these rules with some variation from time to time.

Then came the disastrous, pointless 10 years of the Gordon Campbell “Liberals” as my waggish friend put it, though there’s a lot of competition for the title, Campbell was possibly the worst Premier in B.C.’s history.

With a corrupt media—the same media that now nitpicks everything that the Horgan-Weaver coalition does covered shamelessly for Gordon Campbell. He could do no wrong.

The crimes and misdemeanors of Camp-

bell’s Liberals are too numerous to list in this short missive—the private run of the river project that has cost the people of B.C. some $150 billion etc.

One of Campbell’s first acts was to change the forestry rule so sawmills could be shut down, tenure bought, swapped etc.

No longer could any permanence be expected. In the meantime many freighter loads of raw logs head out overseas.

The TNRD directors passed a bylaw to establish a five-member committee to govern the Vavenby Volunteer Fire Department.

There was no discussion regarding whether it might be preferable to elect committee members rather than appoint them, said TNRD assistant secretary and treasurer John Smith. “This is a bylaw that is standard throughout the region for all fire departments,” he said. “No one is elected except for the directors.”

15 YEARS AGO: Dry lightning ignited five small forest fires in the Clearwater Fire Zone. The 110 hectare Bear Creek Fire, located south of Vavenby just outside the zone, brought back memories of the 4,000 hectare Vermillion Creek fire of the previous year.

A snowmobile/ATV trail being proposed to run from Sun Peaks to Blue River could become part of a larger trail system that could see long-distance sledders do a loop around Wells Gray Park. That was one suggestion put forward during a presentation by Diann Lawson and Al Hodgson, two of the project’s proponents, to Clearwater Chamber of Commerce.

Wells Gray Country Services Committee set aside $2,800 to hire an engineer to design an outdoor skating rink for Vavenby. The money would also be used to design two “Welcome to Wells Gray Country” signs to be erected along Highway 5.

Wells Gray Community Forest had distributed about $500,000 in the community over the past five years, corporation president Dave Meehan reported to the annual general meeting of the community forest’s advisory committee. “It’s been a big boost to a lot of societies,” he said.

1 YEAR AGO: The District of Clearwater announced it signed an agreement with British Columbia Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) to give local patients better emergency care. The agreement allows local firefighters to receive extra training and give support to paramedics if help is needed and many have volunteered for the extra instruction, a move which Clearwater Mayor John Harwood said he admires.

The Clearwater Friendly Club celebrated its 51st birthday last week with its monthly potluck lunch and a special tip of the hat to the Silvertones band.

The Silvertones, which is comprised of Jack Perry, Betty Schulte, Lloyd Smith and Mary Smith, has provided the musical entertainment for the events each month, year-round, at Evergreen Acres and were honoured with a special cake before hitting the stage.

50 years in powder paradise

Mike Wiegele Heli-Skiing (MWHS) is marking 50 years of business this winter and in the half-century the company’s offered its services, operations have come a long way.

In the late 1960s when it all began, Wiegele walked the mountains, scouting terrain in the Cariboos, looking for the right location to open shop.

“I walked into the Cariboos from Valemount with Hans Gmoser, founder of Canadian Mountain Holidays, and came back every year to explore it; I went from one range to another on foot, because I didn’t have any money,” said Wiegele.

“In 1970, I took my first test flight to Mt. Sir Wilfred Laurier and Canoe Glacier, with a Bell 47 helicopter—Gary Foreman, owner of Yellowhead Helicopters, was the pilot.”

He added he wanted to start a ski operation because he was younger, on his own, didn’t have liabilities, and perhaps most obvious—he loved skiing.

He had a big desire to spend time in the mountains and skiing was his main focus.

“When I did go to the mountains in the summertime, and if there was a white spot on the mountain, I would do everything to get to that spot,” noted Wiegele.

“I didn’t owe anybody and I wanted to build my own existence and business—and I also wanted to have fun and enjoy the sport.”

Hannes Schroll, Austrian ski racer and founder of Sugar Bowl Ski Resort in California, met with Wiegele one day while he was working with Junior Bounous, a pioneer of the American ski industry and instructor at Sugar Bowl, as one of his instructors.

He asked Wiegele who he was and where he lived.

“I said, ‘Canada.’ He said, ‘What the hell are you doing here?’ He was a big guy and I stood up straight. I said, ‘I’m a pro here,’” explained Wiegele. “’When you go back to Canada, find yourself a mountain with the best snow and build yourself a resort.’ So that’s what I did.”

His wife Bonnie ran a ski shop in Banff and Wiegele used money from the shop to make promotional materials for his new business and shortly after the pair moved to Blue River, which at the time was a much smaller community than what it is today.

It was here Wiegele would make the acquaintance of a forestry worker named Carman Smith and begin a friendship that would last the rest of their lives.

“Mike came to Blue River and he had this vision, and I’d done a lot of backcountry skiing and what not, but at that time we couldn’t afford to take a helicopter up the hill; we’d never even thought of it. Then Mike comes along and has this little bubble helicopter and we thought holy crow, what’s going on here,” said Smith with a laugh.

“We’d never even dreamed that was possible, but Mike had this vision and he stuck with it and made a very successful endeavor for Blue River and everybody else who skied with him.”

Smith added Wiegele’s contributions to the North Thompson Valley have been many, encouraging people to ski as well as training and employing a lot of residents throughout the years.

The heli-skiing operation also provides opportunities for local

youth who otherwise wouldn’t have such an outlet for recreation.

“It’s opened up a new world for a lot of these kids and a lot of these kids have stuck it out and become guides,” said Smith.

“I think he’s really done a lot for the Valley. He put it on the map. You ask around the world where it is and they know.”

A recession during the 1980s made business a bit rough, and though operations in Blue River started out quite small, they were still seeing hundreds of guests a week.

In 1981 there were seven guides, two office workers, one person in charge of the sport shop and a housekeeper employed by MWHS. The foundation for the lodge was laid in 1980, but the building wasn’t finished until 1987 and in 1988 the main guest lodge opened its doors.

Also in the late ’80s, Wiegele founded the Canadian Ski Guide Association to train ski guides for the mechanized ski industry, which is one of the many undertakings that garnered him a recent honourary doctorate from Thompson Rivers University.

As for why Blue River was his area of choice, he simply did his research and realized it had the best snow. Wiegele spoke with Blue River’s loggers, railroad workers and other old-timers and the word was, “When it snows here the snowflakes fall down big and straight.”

Blue River local Molly Nelson also offered him 34 years of detailed weather information from the area showcasing the snow records.

“I followed my nose; I was looking for a place with less wind than in Valemount, as wind is devastating to powder

Of course, he wouldn’t have been able to develop such an operation before consulting with the local First Nations people.

Nathan Matthew, former Chief of the Simpcw First Nation, said he’s known Wiegele for years and always had a sense they were dealing with a respectful, and humble, businessman.

“Whenever there was a development within the territory the developer had to consult with us just to let us know what was happening so we could talk about our concerns and have a First Nation voice in the planning, especially for concerns we had with the environment,” said Matthew.

“We began a very cordial relationship and what struck me was he was so respectful about the Simpcw First Nation and our culture, and was really quite open to listening to suggestions and explaining what he was doing, and really

finding out more about who we were because we didn’t really have any village up that way, not many of our people lived there.”

Matthew said Wiegele shared a similar philosophy in keeping the environment healthy and not causing a disturbance to nearby plants and animals, noting Wiegele had a special respect for the caribou as well as the salmon in the river near the resort.

“Any suggestions we had with environmental issues, he was always already there with his professional planners working on those issues specifically,” said Matthew.

“When he was able to share his plans, he was already putting it out in a fashion we thought was pretty good in terms of looking at our interests. He’s just a great guy, has a sense of humour and I don’t think I ever heard him say a cross word.”

The location now offers a luxury resort with 22 chalets,

two off-site luxury estates, The Lodge which offers fivestar dining and Silver Buckle Lounge, a boutique, fitness and spa area, a Guides House, Sports Shop, as well as the private Albreda Lodge – 45 km north of Blue River, which has 17 rooms and an additional two bedroom luxury suite.

In the winter season the site employs about 200 people in the town of Blue River, which has 260 year-round residents.

For the 50th anniversary season, MWHS will be putting out a short documentary this fall telling Wiegele’s story.

The movie will be entered into some film festivals and also shown during the season at the resort.

As for the future of MWHS Wiegele said, “We have the assurance of huge mountain ranges—the Cariboo, Monashee and the Rockies—as long as we have snow in abundance, and we have that, these elements will provide a strong future.”

Hop ’N’ Hog takes home People’s Choice award

An area restaurant went up against 20 other culinary establishments from Kamloops and the surrounding region to take home the People’s Choice Award at the annual Chef’s in the City event, which is hosted by the Kamloops Rotary Club.

Hop ’N’ Hog, owned and managed by William Robinson and Teneille McGill, was a first-time participant at the event and Robinson said it felt “fantastic” receive the award.

“We really didn’t expect to have that much of a following already in Kamloops, but we obviously do,” he said.

“People were really happy to see us there; a lot of people even come to the restaurant from Kamloops to take their friends, so it’s

According to the Chefs in the City website, the event is a celebration of the culinary arts, fine wine and beer, and over the past 10 years, has raised more than $325,000 to fund various community pro-

ates good beer, and with craft breweries becoming more popular in B.C., it seemed like a good venture to pursue.

“I figured it would be a great opportunity with all the local breweries popping up to have just local breweries on tap and support local businesses in that way, and then the barbecue was really a growing restaurant trend and something completely different, that especially a lot of tourists from Europe wouldn’t have tried,” he said.

“I thought it would be a great starting point; we do have things on the menu that aren’t smoked—we do a salmon that’s not smoked, we do a duck breast, and tenderloin steak and they’re all sous-vide, which is a French style of cooking in a vacuum, so there are

options. We also do a big vegetarian platter and we smoke the vegetables.”

Robinson added his family worked in the tourism industry in Spain and Africa before moving to Clearwater where they saw a demand for accommodation and tourism services.

After selling the businesses they’d owned they moved to Canada 11 years ago, eventually buying Flower Meadow Bakery and transforming it into the smokehouse dining establishment it is today.

Hop ’N’ Hog also largely employs younger workers from the area, offering them a chance to develop as restaurant workers, with Robinson noting many of them who start out at the restaurant end up in management positions.

“It’s really good seeing them grow and learn what hard work is; we have two

grams for youth in need, focusing on social support and proper nutrition for underprivileged children in Kamloops.

Hop ’N’ Hog won the People’s Choice Award with a miniature beer festival brisket bun, made

with 16-hour smoked brisket, jalapenos, cheese and apple slaw.

“We put that out and we won the award,” said Robinson.

“There are about 600 tickets sold, the majority of people voted for us and we won the award for the best food in the Kamloops region.”

He added they classify the restaurant as a fusion smokehouse, that offers more of a fine dining experience than a traditional smokehouse, and also serve non-smoked and vegetarian options from its menu.

Effort is put into sourcing all meat and fish from B.C., everything is smoked onsite, and all sauces and sides are made fresh every day.

Robinson said he decided to open a barbecue spot because he’s always been a fan of meat and appreci-

employees that started in the dish pit and are now managers. They know the business inside out and they can do any job here,” he said.

“Then we’re going to recommend them to any restaurant they want to work at and they’ll have a really good idea of what’s expected at a fast paced restaurant.”

As for the future of Hop ’N’ Hog, Robinson said they’re looking at opening a second location, either in Kamloops or at a ski resort, to help keep operations year round as the restaurant is typically only open from May to October each year.

“We’re just looking for the perfect location and that would help keep some of our staff working year round because we could transfer people out, which would be really cool.”

Canada Day, once known as Dominion Day, marks the anniversary of July 1, 1867. On this day, Canada was officially born when the British North America Act, 1867 (today called the Constitution Act, 1867) joined the three colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the province of Canada into one country.

The province of Canada later split into Ontario and Quebec.

Canada became a kingdom in its own right on July 1, with the British parliament and Cabinet only keeping limited rights of political control over the new Canadian country. By 1982, how-

ever, the last vestiges of British control were surrendered.

It was also in this year that, after decades of deliberation, Dominion Day was renamed to Canada Day. Canada Day is a day for all Canadians to express their patriotism.

Parades and parties are held, and the Canadian flag is proudly displayed on homes and businesses. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have a special group of 32 officers called the RCMP Musical Ridey, who may perform at Canada Day celebrations.

Picnics, festivals and sporting events also are part of the festivities.

Fireworks displays dot the night sky, and many residents can

be heard singing the Canadian national anthem, “O Canada,” which is based on a poem written by Robert Stanley Weir in 1908.

Should Canada Day fall on a Sunday, July 2nd serves as the statutory holiday. However, most celebrations still take place on the first in such years. In 2011, The Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge celebrated Canada Day in Ottawa.

Other special guests may join in the festivities as well.

People all across Canada are gearing up for barbecues, parades and other celebrations in honor of Canada Day, which is often a fun holiday during the summer season.

National Indigenous Peoples Day a success

Thank you to everyone for such an amazing National Indigenous Peoples Day. I’m pretty sure this was one of the best National Aboriginal Day events we’ve have had in a long time.

The day started off around 11 a.m. and there was a steady stream of people all day long.

The end of the day count was more than 200 people coming and going. It was absolutely wonderful to have the children from Eagles Nest and from Raft River Elementary School come to participate.

The seniors stopped by around lunchtime, and we also had visitors from Wales, Holland, Germany, and Australia.

The grand entry was at noon, and I so appreciate the people that were asked to carry the flags without any notice like Shelly Sim from the District of Clearwater, Laura Pickering, Steve Coburn, Lowanda Knox and Sam Saul, Irene McNabb, Joe Short, Keith Henry, Renee Therein and Dale Haggerty.

All the special people who participated in the grand entry, Sheila Nyman, Georgina Leppky, Jessica Baker, Michelle Wall, Bridget MacDougall, Cheryl Thomas, Alex Shymkiw, Lori Bradstock, all the children (sorry if I missed anyone), which made our grand entry a real community showcase.

J.J. Lavallee provided much of the entertainment for National Indigenous Peoples Day, which took place at the Dutch Lake Community Centre on June 21. Photos by Jaime Polmateer We were lead in by JJ Lavallee and his amazing fiddle playing.

The crowd was treated to a yummy lunch catered by Lowanda Knox from Barriere.

There was exceptional entertainment all afternoon long.

With our very special guests Rowan and Quinn Pickering teaching some of the children how to jig. Renee Therein, and JJ Lavallee on fiddle and gui-

tar, and we were all treated to Quinn Pickering singing and playing guitar.

We were all treated to an amazing dinner of Indian tacos homemade bannock and chilli, dessert to die for and cake.

I cannot thank all of the volunteers enough for all their help in setting up and to all the wonderful people who helped clean up afterwards.

Special thanks to Marilyn Thompson who was there from beginning to end. Vivian Allen and Annabelle Stevens, Dennis Peacock, Roxanne L’Esperance, Changes that Heal, Wendy Vogels and Brenda Griffiths.

More thanks to our very special guests from the lower mainland Keith Henry, Sherry Daniels, JJ Lavallee, Rowan Pickering, Quinn Pickering, Derrick Whiteskycloud, and our special guest Renee Therein, all the way from Terrace, who drove here just to support this event.

BRAATEN, Darlene (Tiny) March 4, 1945 – June 17, 2019 It is with sad hearts we announce the passing of Darlene (Tiny) Braaten nee Olson.

Tiny was born in New Westminster on March 4, 1945. She was pre-deceased by her dad Ernest, mom Ivy (Idy), brother Ronald, half-sisters Violet & Shyrell and her dearest aunt Violet (Sis).

She is survived by her ever loving husband Roy, sons Dwayne (Sam), Darryl (Anita), daughter Val (Allan), grandchildren Tyler (Alex), Tyson, Ashley (Haden), Anthony (Emily), Damian, Sophia, Uncle Cliff (Marj), sister-in-law Alice, brother Cliff (Betty), nieces/nephews Amanda (Todd), Nathan (Nicola), & great nieces/nephews Adrian, Gabe, Zachary & Emily.

And her extended family, the “Braaten� clan, sister and brother in-laws, nieces, nephews & cousins, all dearly thought of and loved.

Many I am sure would refer to Darlene as the “MIGHTY TINY�. Tiny being a nick name that stuck with her from a young child and FIT her to a T! Tiny moved to Clearwater from Hammond in 1950 with her family to plant roots. She lost her father at an early age and her mother not many years later. She met Roy and found her lifelong partner. Soon her two boys were born and the “Surprise� daughter (the best surprise ever she would say but wasn’t happy about the fact her name was to be Darren)! Despite being busy with her children she also cared for both her brothers. Her door was always open with the coffee pot and baking ready for whoever stopped in. A visit with Tiny included words of wisdom and a lot of laughs.

Her home was a place of rest and refuge that many enjoyed over the years, creating many lifelong memories and friends.

With her family members she enjoyed travelling to many hot springs and was able to visit relatives from North Dakota to California along with many trips to Saskatchewan. She had a few hobbies including gardening, reading gossip magazines, spending time with grand kids, nieces, nephews, baking pies and road trips with her partner in crime Sis! In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or Forest View Place in Clearwater.

Clearwater Secondary School held its graduation ceremony on June 21, where 38 grads celebrated the completion of their studies before heading off to the next stages of their lives.

The ceremony was attended by friends, family, faculty and dignitaries, some of whom offered words of inspiration and advice.

A number of awards, scholarships and bursaries were also granted to help those heading on to post-secondary studies.

These included the Alan Neuman Award, which was given to Jenny Panko; the Bill Sedgwick Memorial Bursary was handed to Annika Wadlegger and the BOP Elks #499 Bursary was given to Hannah Elliot.

The Brody Wynne Memorial Bursary was given to Nathan Jensen; the Skye/Courtney Buck Bursary was awarded to Ashley Foster and Cedrik Menard and the Buy-Low Foods

Scholarship was given to Ashley Foster.

C.J. Bessette Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Grayson Panko; the Canfor Scholarship was handed to Jenny Panko and Bret Nolette and Hannah Elliot and Ashley Foster received the Clearwater Dental Clinic Bursary.

The Central North Thompson Rod and Gun Club donated to Paytten Yurkiw and Amanda Zittlau; Century 21 Rison Bursary was given to Nathan Jensen and the Clearwater Rotary Club Bursary was handed to Ashley foster, Jenny Panko, Grayson Panko and Hannah Elliot.
