He also hung a red dress on his back in memory of an indigenous girl who never got a chance to wear hers to graduation, as she went missing before she could attend.

“Right now, at this moment, I’ve never felt so vulnerable and weak in my life,” said Louie. “And I think that is very fitting, given

the cause that we’re walking for today. Those women. Their power was taken away from them. The situations, the violence, the sexual assault and even the murder.”

“This paint that’s on my face is the symbol of the missing and murdered indigenous women. It’s a symbol of the silence of the epidemic. But despite the paint, we still have our voice. Everybody in this square has their voice.”

Students at Yaqan Nukiy School didn’t stop learning simply because it was their second-to-last day of school. The Grade 7/8 class from the Lower Kootenay Band school launched cardboard boats into Goat River on June 19 to test their ability to stay afloat and carry passengers.

“Designing it was hard — and making sure it was waterproof,” said Millie Whitford, who designed a boat with Brooke Jessop, Adam Three Feathers and Caleb Wells.

The project was a unique way to teach students the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) portion of the curriculum, as they learned about buoyancy, centre of gravity and displacement while creat-

ing boats using only cardboard, duct tape and a plastic sheet.

“STEM is so often a theoretical subject, but by doing it with a hands-on approach, students are more likely to become engaged and have fun,” said Grade 7/8 teacher Devan Coward.

That was the case for Whitford, who said that a lot of math went into the project, but that the final challenge in the river made the hard work worth it.

“It was extremely fun,” said Millie Whitford. “It was exhilarating.”

The boat was their second attempt, after designing an earlier model that wouldn’t have been as sturdy. With the second version, “we were more precise with our measurements,” said Jessop. Their team’s boat held three

people and survived two trips through a short portion of the Goat River.

Another boat, designed by Katelynn Anderson, Ella Moore, Julia Huscroft and Riley Loftus, was able to hold four students without sinking. It would likely have been sturdy enough to survive several trips, but the cardboard used in its construction became so waterlogged that it became too heavy to carry back to the starting point.

The project proved a success both in terms of learning and some endof-the-year fun.

“The main goal was testing to see if it would work,” said Coward. “The river just added some extra excitement.”

Making big strides toward reconciliation

June 21 is recognized across Canada as National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to celebrate and learn more about the cultural diversity of Canada’s First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. For Kootenay Lake School District students, the entire year has been filled with a multitude of opportunities for students to learn about and participate in Aboriginal education.

Just a week prior to the nationally recognized day this year, almost six hundred K-12 students from across the district converged at Salmo Secondary for the wuqanq’ankimik

run. A year in the making and planning, the Aboriginal Run/Walk event was a collaboration with the Lower Kootenay Band (LKB) Chief and Council and the SD8 Aboriginal Education department staff. What began as an initiative to promote physical activity for youth, the event grew to become a unique opportunity to collaborate and include elders and community members in the spirit of reconciliation.

The Ktunaxa word wuqanqan’kimik means “to walk with long strides… to take big steps”. It was apparent in all of the preliminary speeches that day

that events such as this one are indeed making great strides towards reconciliation. LKB Coun. Jared Basil, speaking to all the students, staff and community members present that afternoon recognized that “We all have the ability to make a difference when it comes to reconciliation, that we can make significant strides, big strides when there is a willingness to be open.”

Danica Weager, district indigenization coordinator, was instrumental in organizing the event. With the assistance of additional funding from SportBC, ISPARC as well as a Healthy

Schools grant, students enjoyed a terrific afternoon that included a free lunch, a bandana for every runner and several terrific draw prizes such as fitbits, water bottles, wireless headphones and other gadgets.

The opening ceremonies included a welcome to the territory and meaningful remarks from Jared Basil, a welcome from Supt.

Christine Perkins and a submitted letter from MLA Michelle Mungall, read aloud by Salmo Secondary Principal Jann Schmidt. The Lower Kootenay Band drum group Eagle Bear Spirit then provided an opening song

before the students did a warm-up and assembled at the starting line.

Students and participating community members had the option of completing a one, three or five km walk/run. The run was immediately followed by a free hot dog lunch and then a reconciliation art activity and relay games in the school fields. “Despite the heat, everyone seemed to enjoy the music, kinship and physical activity that afternoon. Movement is medicine!” said Danica Weager, in the true spirit of celebrating an inclusive approach to Aboriginal education.

COTR campus hosting seed production workshop College of the Rockies will host an organic vegetable seed production workshop at the Creston campus on Wednesday, July 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“Demand for organic seed is increasing across North America and our region is one of many in BC that offer a great growing environment for seed crops,” said Andrena Heigh, College of the Rockies biology instructor.

“On-farm seed production can bring additional revenue to a farm and help farmers to grow seeds optimally suited to their farm environment.”

The morning workshop will be led by long-time organic seed producer and founder of Stellar Seeds, Patrick Steiner, and FarmFolk CityFolk’s (FFCF) Chris Thoreau. Thoreau will present research and resources related to

contract seed growing, seed enterprise budgets, and introduce the B.C. Eco Seed Co-op as a means of marketing seed crops.

In the afternoon, participants will accompany Steiner to a local farm where he will lead a walk through crops to look at selection, roguing, seed cleaning, and other important considerations when growing a seed crop. All attendees are asked to wear nonfarm clothing, clean and sanitize any farm footwear, and to refrain from bringing tools or items that may be contaminated with soil on the farm visit in order to reduce the risk of importing disease or pests.

The fee to attend the Organic Vegetable Seed Production workshop is based on a paywhat-you-can model, ranging between $25 and $40. The cost

Seniors also “squeezed” by cost of living From Parliament Hill Wayne Stetski

A few months ago, I wrote about millennials and how they are now “Generation Squeeze.” My office received quite a bit of feedback about that topic. Thank you to everyone who wrote to me to express their views. I have not forgotten about another group that is often finding it difficult to make ends meet: Seniors.

In May, I delivered a statement in the House of Commons about older adults in my riding facing financial challenges. This generation too has become “squeezed.” For example, many seniors are providing financial

help to their adult children or their grandchildren while trying to live on a fixed income.

Thanks to modern medicine and Canada’s social programs, Canadians are living longer, but pensions and other benefits have not kept up with the rising cost of living. Indeed, in Canada, 15 per cent of seniors currently live in poverty. Some senior women, who may have stayed home to raise children or worked in the family business for little or no salary, have contributed little to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP).

As a result, they are now faced with financial difficulties. Though they may qualify for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) top-up, the process takes time, and the resulting monthly benefits may fall short of what the individual actually needs.

In response, the NDP has proposed

not cutting off the GIS of seniors who are late filing their taxes.

Moreover, the party has also proposed a National Seniors’ Strategy committing the federal government to create a long-term action plan that would ensure seniors can maintain an adequate quality of life.

When it comes to good quality, affordable housing, seniors are finding the same difficulties as millennials: Rents are increasing at astronomical rates, and just like their younger counterparts who can’t find small starter homes, seniors whose children may have left home are struggling to downsize to smaller homes in an overheated housing market.

In some cases, seniors who need smaller units or long-term care may be obliged to move from their longtime community to find housing.

Such moves can result in added ex-

pense and sudden social isolation.

Compounding this is a lack of affordable, reliable inter-city transit options, especially now that Greyhound has left the region, and air travel options flying out of Cranbrook have been reduced. Seniors needing access to healthcare in larger communities may incur additional expenses as a result.

Canadian internet and cell phone prices are some of the highest in the world: Seniors need to stay connected both from a social point of view and for their safety, but the current telecom rates are making this necessity more and more of a luxury as seniors have to decide between paying for cell service or paying for housing and groceries.

As some of you may have heard through the grapevine recently, I am indeed closing in on retirement from my career at the Creston and District Community Complex and as well, this being my final column.

As I used to joke in the past with people that asked when I was retiring – “still have some community service hours to perform” – I guess I can now advise that they are complete. At least here in an official capacity. I do like to look at time served here however, as providing service to the community, from one end of our valley to another in various capacities and endeavors.

We’ve done a lot, you and I, this past 24 years or so with probably my personal key moments being the passing of the referendum right through to the construction of our revamped community complex and, the icing on the cake, (albeit nine years later), adding a world class park on the side of the hill next to this Jewel of the Kootenays.

There have been many other notable achievements or progressions we have seen or been involved with, both in our Valley and throughout the RDCK So, when I mentioned to one of our kids that I was working on my last column and trying to cram a lifetime of experience into 500 words or less, she just looked at me and said “relationships”. After my initial reaction of “pffft” because how could one of my children ever be smarter than me, I realized on that long drive home – that’s exact-

ly what is has been about. Everything from the moment I started has been about my relationship with the people I came into contact with – fellow employees, instructors, public, patrons, management, suppliers, politicians – everyone.

It’s not a mind-boggling concept – we all do it from the moment we begin to communicate but how you behave in that relationship is what will define your path.

Following a lesson plan we all should have learned in preschool, I have always tried to treat people the way I expect to be treated and it has worked reasonably well for me. As in life, there were ones that I didn’t care to have a relationship with but sometimes that’s not a choice on the menu so you learn the art of tolerance, holding your tongue and picking your battles – a skill we now get to watch being eroded brought to you by social media!

(OK, there is still some good relationship stuff out there – all is not lost…yet.)

The amount of people I had the pleasure of meeting or working with in this career is staggering but if you take the approach of assuming each person has something to offer you that will make you a better person in some fashion - sometimes indiscernibly, sometimes pie in the face - hey, how can you go wrong? Even if it’s exhibiting a behavior that you don’t want in your repertoire although luckily, there have only been a few of those. I think one area that is vivid for me comes after interviewing a bazillion lifeguard candidates; stumbling and greener than green, then watching them turn into responsible and engaging young adults in a few years as well as seeing other staff mature and grown into their often changing

Provincial programs may only provide patchwork coverage, depending on financial thresholds. This is one reason the NDP is calling for a national pharmacare program that would be another building block towards true universal health care in Canada.

As mentioned, the NDP has been calling on the government for a national seniors’ strategy that would address income, housing, and health considerations of our older generations. It is time that Canadians had a government that worked for them, that helped to improve all aspects of their daily life.

People outside the immediate cec centre circle; dedicated to running a community hall, making minor and adult sports come to life, farmers market, fall fair, theatre and other entertainment or creating initiatives like community revitalization, public art, trails, the facility enhancement committee - the list just keeps going on – I saw those people demonstrate passion, commitment and volunteerism. If you meet or work with them and not take away anything within yourself, you must not have a soul.

So; just remember “relationships” and pattern yourself accordingly and you may find yourself waking up one morning just a touch more tolerant and forgiving with a dash of wisdom. I’m off to encounter new relationships and maintain some of the old favourites. See you in the hot tub!

Lori and Bill Cameron opened Gift Baskets by Tigz Designs in the fall of 2014.

It was meant as only a temporary, pop-up shop. Fast forward five years and Tigz Designs is celebrating its fifth anniversary.

“We opened the doors in late fall and planned on staying until the end of December,” said Lori. “It was wonderful to interact with customers. I loved it! By the time December 31 came around, I was hooked! So we decided to stay.”

“At that time, all we had was metal shelving that we had borrowed. We had no shelves other than that, so Bill got to work and made all the shelving and did all the renovations in the store for a

grand opening. When renovations were completed, it was Canada Day weekend. That’s when we had our grand opening.”

Over time, Tigz Designs expanded its loose leaf tea selection to include luxury teas from around the world.

The teas line the shelves behind the counter, creating the Tigz Tea Hut Experience.

“We love being able to provide teas from all over the world to people in Creston,” said Lori.

On Saturday, June 29, from 10-5 p.m., Lori and Bill are inviting their customers to come and join them in celebrating their fifth anniversary with Tigz’ customer appreciation day. Highlights of the event will include in-store

specials, all day samples, the biggest bulk tea sale of the year and $500 in door prizes.

Plessis opened her first retail storefront in Creston August 2018.

“When we opened the first store, I sold CBD products for people, pets and a few holistic products. Since then we have moved locations twice with our final move being here at the

Creston Valley Mall.”

Plessis has expanded her storefront operation into a holistic healing centre that focuses on the body, mind, spirit, and emotions for optimal health and wellness.

“We have introduced three certified holistic practitioners to the Choose Natural team and are now able to offer raindrop therapy, shamanic drumming, reiki healing, quantum hypnosis, acupressure, and tarot card readings. Our holistic product lines have been expanded to include nat-

ural beauty products, essential oils, diffusers, and reflexology magnet therapy.”

Plessis has plans to introduce holistic workshops and classes to the centre.

“I look forward to being able to educate the public on the benefits of holistic healing and inviting holistic presenters and teachers to Choose Natural.”

Tips to stay safe during BBQ season (NC) As the weather warms up, we turn to our barbecues to grill delicious foods and enjoy the season. Here are some tips from Health Canada to keep you and your guests happy and healthy this summer: At the store. Buy cold food at the end of your trip. Raw meat may contain harmful bacteria, so keep it separate from other items to avoid cross-contamination. Put packages of raw meat in plastic bags to keep juices from leaking onto other foods.

In the fridge. Always refrigerate perishable foods as quickly as possible, especially in warm weather. Keep raw meat on the bottom shelf, away from other foods.

In the cooler. If it’ll take you longer than a couple of hours to get home after shopping or when bringing food up to the cottage, pack perishables in an insulated cooler with ice packs. Keep the cooler out of

direct sunlight and the internal temperature at or below 4°C (39°F). Try using separate coolers for food and drinks so that food stays colder longer.

At the BBQ. Inspect your barbecue brush and the barbecue grill before each use. The metal bristles on the brush can become loose over time and stick to the grill, then stick to food and be accidentally swallowed, possibly causing serious throat or digestive injuries.

Avoid cross-contamination.

Use separate utensils, cutting boards and dishes when handling raw and cooked meat.

For example, do not place cooked meat on the same plate used to bring raw meat to the grill. Raw juices can spread bacteria to your safely cooked food and cause food poisoning.

Keep it clean. After washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds,

sanitize all cooking equipment and work surfaces with a mild homemade bleach solution.

Mix 5 mL of bleach with 750 mL of water in a spray bottle.

Spray the solution on and let stand briefly, then rinse with clean water and air dry or use clean towels.

Cook thoroughly. You can’t tell if meat is done and safe to eat by looking at the colour alone. Use a digital food thermometer and check the below Government of Canada food safety website for the safe internal cooking temperatures for beef, poultry, pork, and other foods.

Store leftovers. Put food in shallow containers so that it cools quickly. Discard any food left out for more than two hours. On hot summer days, don’t keep food at room temperature for more than one hour.

Save-On-Foods commits to reducing food waste

To the editor, With respect to the Advance June 13, 2019, re: Save on Foods commits to reducing food waste.

I am so delighted about this good news report. Having been born in the 1930s, I was raised with the waste not-want not education. Being committed to this theory is essential.

There has been an eye-opener article in the Reader Digest of March 2016, with a story of some 14 pages, dealing with the use of ugly vegetables.

Mother nature often produces twisted, crooked, twin-

legged, blemish-marked and misshapen produce. When vegetables are cleaned, washed, and cut up the vegetables have the same food value at the perfect type. In truth, the food value is the same, colour is the same, the taste is the same.

My garden has a compost bin, this rooted compost is fed to my t-of-c garden. This replaces my soil.

Thank you Save-On-Foods for a positive move in the right direction. It is great you have stepped up to the plate.

Conservatives announce A Real Plan To Protect Our Environment To the Editor, Canadians know that when it comes to the environment, Liberals are all talk and no action. Justin Trudeau’s carbon tax is not an environmental plan.

Trudeau gave big polluters a special deal while forcing families to pay more to drive to work and heat their homes.

To the editor, It was a sunny warm afternoon in May when I was arriving home from lunch with friends and found an injured falcon on my boulevard.

Several passersby got too close, frightened it and I saw it vigorously flap its wings and move forward a few inches on of unnecessary noise.

Please be considerate in the its belly.

Pete came along and shared my concern and we pondered the options. Pete left and I went in to call the police or game warden for advice.

In about 10 minutes a couple drove up with a box and blanket and Pete returned with a fishnet.

I had towels which we used to try to corner and capture the falcon but it flew up and across into a tree. The flight was very awkward and landing less than graceful but the falcon was now high up in a tree.

I returned home and took a

return call from the game warden. We both agreed there was no more that could be done and nature would have to take its course.

Not very long after, the people returned, falcon in hand- well, in fishnet covered with a towel.

A neighbour had climbed a ladder into the tree and retrieved the falcon and now these good Samaritans were on their way to the Creston Veterinary Hospital.

A few days later I made enquiry at the hospital about the injured falcon. I learned that it

had stabilized and took food eagerly so someone drove it to Cranbrook airport where it was flown on “wings of steel’ to Vancouver for medical treatment and eventual release close to where it was found or entry into a breeding program.

I thanked God and was ecstatic to think that a few concerned resourceful people working together as a team had made the difference between life and death for one very fortunate falcon who hopefully will live to fly again.

SMITH, Marion Frances July 15, 1945 - February 1, 2019 With heavy hearts, we share the sudden, unexpected passing of Marion Frances Smith at the Kelowna General Hospital on February 1, 2019.

Marion was born in a small house in Coleman, Alberta on July 15, 1945.

Her family then moved to Canyon, B.C. to farm where she lived with her mother Emily and grandparents Frances and Joseph Miknovitch.

After high school she moved to Calgary, AB where she met and married Jim Smith. They raised 2 children Bradley and Carla. They later moved to Erickson, BC to be near her grandparents.

Later in life, Marion lived with her companion Albert Michalsky. They had many interests such as gardening, fishing, camping, gold panning and metal detecting in and around the East and West Kootenays. She was employed at the Swan Valley Lodge for many years and retired in 2011.

After Marion retired, she moved to Cranbrook, BC to be nearer her sisters Vi and Liz (living in Fernie, BC). Marion continued to pursue her passion and favourite past time; gardening! Oh, she had a green thumb! She had a beautiful yard full of annual and perennial flowers, berry bushes, fruit trees and a huge vegetable garden. She surprised and pleased her family with all her wonderful preserves and beautiful meals. She loved to take her walks every day especially her dog JR. Marion thrived in Cranbrook and thoroughly enjoyed every day here.

Marion had a genuine and pure heart. Her nature was kind and generous; she would do anything for anyone often putting others’ needs before her own. Her sense of humour was infectious; always smiling and laughing.

Marion you will be forever admired and missed.

Marion is survived by her son, Bradley Smith of Bucerias, Mexico, daughter Carla Beck of Nelson, BC and granddaughter, Amy Beck of Edmonton, AB. She also leaves behind her two sisters Liz Stokie (Ian) and Vi de Bruycker (Juergen), Albert’s daughter Linda-Lee Maciver and her 2 children, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Emily and Michael Konieczny of Fernie and grandparents Frances and Joseph Miknovitch of Creston.

Marion had stated years ago that when she passed, no funeral service will be held, instead cremation, then her ashes spread on Kootenay Lake, outside Creston, BC. This family celebration and gathering will be held on her birthday in July 2020.

ENTERTAINMENT On the Other Hand: Two true musical tales of choice coming to Prince Charles Theatre

Lovers of theatre, musicals, and storytelling are in for a rare treat on July 6 at Prince Charles Theatre.

Ellie Reynolds, emerging performing artist and Creston Valley local, along with Bessie Wapp, a seasoned professional performer from Nelson, have teamed up to present a double bill of two remarkable solo

performances titled On the Other Hand: two true musical tales of choice.

The first performance of the evening is the brand new, full-length show Matchmaker on the Roof written and performed by Reynolds. It’s a true tale of bold love, border-crossing and the rediscovery of tradition. Many scenes

in the show take place right in Creston and the Rykerts/ Bonners Ferry area. Adding a musical backbone to the show, Reynolds has used the themes and music from the well-loved Broadway show Fiddler on the Roof to help tell her story of leaving home, finding love and creating a family as well as the challenges – both poignant and hilarious – that accompany Hear ✝ Believe ✝ Receive ✝ Confess this journey. Also on stage, Creston’s own Joanna Wilson will be providing live piano accompaniment.

end where birth control, a cinematic cult classic and the bigbox phenomenon converge.

This piece has been performed previously at the Oxygen Centre Cabaret, the Kootenay Storytelling Festival and at the Vallican Whole in the Slocan Valley. Wapp has been working as a theatre-maker and musician professionally for over 30 years, both in the Kootenays, Vancouver and internationally.

Interestingly, Reynolds saw Wapp perform Jesus Christ Superstore back in 2017, and it was this experience that inspired her to want to write her own piece combining memoir with musical theatre. “I was fascinated to learn that

a performance of mine was the catalyst for Ellie to write a piece of her own. I’m honoured she then asked me to support her to develop and mount that piece, and am very excited to be presenting both our pieces together in one evening,” said Wapp.

“I believe that when we tell our stories, and excavate for the deeper truths contained within our lived experiences – we open up doors for others to do the same,” said Reynolds. “Although deeply personal and particular, both women’s stories speak to our universal longing to find love, family and community along with the often painful choices we have to make along the

way. We hope that audiences will leave drenched in wonder, possibly dabbing at tears, and humming brilliant show tunes for the rest of the weekend.”

Creston will be the first stop on the show’s East/West Kootenay Tour. Funded by generous support from the Columbia-Kootenay Cultural Alliance, Columbia Basin Trust and the RDCK, Reynolds and Wapp are taking this show on the road this summer and fall.

7th Siding Festival of Film set for Creston in November

Professional and amateur filmmakers throughout the Creston Valley are officially invited to submit their projects to the first-ever 7th Siding Festival of Film, to be held in Creston Nov. 15 to 17, 2019.

Films may be of any length, in any language, and may be made in any variety of genres, including feature-length movies, experimental films, animation, documentaries,

historical/family documentation in Super8 formats, etc.

Submitted projects will have been made by Creston Valley residents and/or depict activities/events in the region; the films may be of any duration and produced in any year.

The festival is non-competitive and does not require an entry fee.

Internationally acclaimed animator and 7th Siding spokesperson Richard

Reeves says the idea for the festival has been an idea in the back of his mind for many years. “It all started when a few of my friends asked where they could see my films,“ Reeves said I realized that although I could always show people my work on a cellphone, much of it was actually created in 35mm film — which means it was designed to be seen and heard on a big theatre screen.”

“Then I t h o u g h t , ‘Wouldn’t it be great to extend an invitation to filmmakers across the Creston Valley so we could all enjoy

our films together in a real theatre and one collective festival?’”

He added the films will be shown at multiple locations, including Creston’s Tivoli Theatre and Erickson’s The Venue. “We’re extremely grateful to both the Tivoli’s Bonnie Geddes and The Venue’s Rick Brown for the opportunity to show our projects at their locations,” Reeves said.

The 7th Siding Festival of Film is being held under the umbrella of the newly formed Kootenay Film Society (KFS). A festival entry form is available on the KFS website at www. kootenayfilmsociety.com.

Deadline for submissions is Oct 4, 2019.

Faust says the RDCK took a similar motion to the UBCM last year, which passed. She says the UBCM has passed seven similar resolutions since 1992, and in each case, the government has merely responded by thanking them for their concern.

So this year Faust’s resolution is more specific, and asks for legislation that would give regional governments new powers to regulate some aspects of private land logging “to mitigate the impact of private

land large scale timber harvesting on fish habitat, public safety and local government infrastructure.”

“If the province is not going to step up, then I guess we will have to,” she said.

Faust admitted this is a sensitive issue for private landowners.

“It is a touchy issue,” she said, “but when your property touches other private property or community infrastructure, we have a responsibility to work together, and plan accordingly.”

The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) wants the province to give regional districts the power to make land use bylaws that would regulate private land logging.

And it wants the province to require large private forest landholders to register their properties in the province’s Private Managed Forest Program. This would require of owners a degree of land use planning and stream protection that does not otherwise exist for private land logging.

These two requests have been combined in a resolution to the annual conference of the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) in September. UBCM delegates will vote on the resolution, and if it passes, the UBCM will lobby the provincial government for the changes.

The resolution was put forward by Area E director Ramona Faust, who said it is a reaction to private land logging near Cottonwood Lake and Wynndel, as well as areas in the East Kootenay.

“We are looking for some regulatory way to foster better stewardship on private land,” she told the Star.

She said the resolution is intended to apply to large pieces of private land that are prone to being purchased for the purpose of clear-cutting, rather than to smaller parcels.

“We know it needs to be fairly innocuous and not cause too much expense for private land owners, so we needed to define the size of land we are talking about. We do not want it to be an impediment to people doing interface wildfire fuel remediation or home building.”

Creston Combat Fitness brings home four silver medals Creston Combat Fitness

Over 400 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors gathered in Burnaby June 15-2019 for the Canadian Brazilian Jui Jitsu Federation (CBJJF) B.C. Provincial Open.

The Creston Combat Fitness club sent three competitors ranging in age from 15 to 50 years old and brought home four silver medals from the prestigious tournament.

15-year-old Dlyar Mohammed is new to Creston and has only been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu once a week for the past ten months in our local club. This was Mohammed’s first time competing, and he fought in both the traditional gi

and no-gi divisions bringing home two silver medals.

“Dlyar fought incredibly well, we are all very proud of him, especially considering he has only been training in the gi for the past month or so, the gi makes the game very technical with a lot more grips and options,” said Creston Combat Fitness club coach Mark Artyniuk.

Michael Short has also only been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for a few months; still, he managed to win his first match via kimura submission and lost by a narrow point margin in the gold medal match against a much more experienced

practitioner from Gracie Barra.

Connie Kryzanowski competed in the women’s Masters 2 division and lost her gold medal match to a controversial advantage point, settling for Silver.

Connie also took double gold last month in Coeur d’Alene at the AKA Open Jiu-Jitsu Tournament.

Creston Combat Fitness trains Brazilian Jiu Jitsu every Wednesday night at the Creston Judo Club, and occasionally hosts special seminars like women’s self-defense, kids bully proof and Muay Thai.
