He also hung a red dress on his back in memory of an indigenous girl who never got a chance to wear hers to graduation, as she went missing before she could attend. “Right now, at this moment, I’ve never felt so vulnerable and weak in my life,” said Louie. “And I think that is very fitting, given

Students at Yaqan Nukiy School didn’t stop learning simply because it was their second-to-last day of school. The Grade 7/8 class from the Lower Kootenay Band school launched cardboard boats into Goat River on June 19 to test their ability to stay afloat and carry passengers. “Designing it was hard — and making sure it was waterproof,” said Millie Whitford, who designed a boat with Brooke Jessop, Adam Three Feathers and Caleb Wells. The project was a unique way to teach students the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) portion of the curriculum, as they learned about buoyancy, centre of gravity and displacement while creat-

ing boats using only cardboard, duct tape and a plastic sheet. “STEM is so often a theoretical subject, but by doing it with a hands-on approach, students are more likely to become engaged and have fun,” said Grade 7/8 teacher Devan Coward. That was the case for Whitford, who said that a lot of math went into the project, but that the final challenge in the river made the hard work worth it. “It was extremely fun,” said Millie Whitford. “It was exhilarating.” The boat was their second attempt, after designing an earlier model that wouldn’t have been as sturdy. With the second version, “we were more precise with our measurements,” said Jessop. Their team’s boat held three

people and survived two trips through a short portion of the Goat River. Another boat, designed by Katelynn Anderson, Ella Moore, Julia Huscroft and Riley Loftus, was able to hold four students without sinking. It would likely have been sturdy enough to survive several trips, but the cardboard used in its construction became so waterlogged that it became too heavy to carry back to the starting point. The project proved a success both in terms of learning and some endof-the-year fun. “The main goal was testing to see if it would work,” said Coward. “The river just added some extra excitement.”

Making big strides toward reconciliation

June 21 is recognized across Canada as National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to celebrate and learn more about the cultural diversity of Canada’s First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. For Kootenay Lake School District students, the entire year has been filled with a multitude of opportunities for students to learn about and participate in Aboriginal education. Just a week prior to the nationally recognized day this year, almost six hundred K-12 students from across the district converged at Salmo Secondary for the wuqanq’ankimik

run. A year in the making and planning, the Aboriginal Run/Walk event was a collaboration with the Lower Kootenay Band (LKB) Chief and Council and the SD8 Aboriginal Education department staff. What began as an initiative to promote physical activity for youth, the event grew to become a unique opportunity to collaborate and include elders and community members in the spirit of reconciliation. The Ktunaxa word wuqanqan’kimik means “to walk with long strides… to take big steps”. It was apparent in all of the preliminary speeches that day

that events such as this one are indeed making great strides towards reconciliation. LKB Coun. Jared Basil, speaking to all the students, staff and community members present that afternoon recognized that “We all have the ability to make a difference when it comes to reconciliation, that we can make significant strides, big strides when there is a willingness to be open.” Danica Weager, district indigenization coordinator, was instrumental in organizing the event. With the assistance of additional funding from SportBC, ISPARC as well as a Healthy

Schools grant, students enjoyed a terrific afternoon that included a free lunch, a bandana for every runner and several terrific draw prizes such as fitbits, water bottles, wireless headphones and other gadgets. The opening ceremonies included a welcome to the territory and meaningful remarks from Jared Basil, a welcome from Supt. Christine Perkins and a submitted letter from MLA Michelle Mungall, read aloud by Salmo Secondary Principal Jann Schmidt. The Lower Kootenay Band drum group Eagle Bear Spirit then provided an opening song

before the students did a warm-up and assembled at the starting line. Students and participating community members had the option of completing a one, three or five km walk/run. The run was immediately followed by a free hot dog lunch and then a reconciliation art activity and relay games in the school fields. “Despite the heat, everyone seemed to enjoy the music, kinship and physical activity that afternoon. Movement is medicine!” said Danica Weager, in the true spirit of celebrating an inclusive approach to Aboriginal education.

COTR campus hosting seed production workshop College of the Rockies will host an organic vegetable seed production workshop at the Creston campus on Wednesday, July 10, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “Demand for organic seed is increasing across North America and our region is one of many in BC that offer a great growing environment for seed crops,” said Andrena Heigh, College of the Rockies biology instructor. “On-farm seed production can bring additional revenue to a farm and help farmers to grow seeds optimally suited to their farm environment.” The morning workshop will be led by long-time organic seed producer and founder of Stellar Seeds, Patrick Steiner, and FarmFolk CityFolk’s (FFCF) Chris Thoreau. Thoreau will present research and resources related to

contract seed growing, seed enterprise budgets, and introduce the B.C. Eco Seed Co-op as a means of marketing seed crops. In the afternoon, participants will accompany Steiner to a local farm where he will lead a walk through crops to look at selection, roguing, seed cleaning, and other important considerations when growing a seed crop. All attendees are asked to wear nonfarm clothing, clean and sanitize any farm footwear, and to refrain from bringing tools or items that may be contaminated with soil on the farm visit in order to reduce the risk of importing disease or pests. The fee to attend the Organic Vegetable Seed Production workshop is based on a paywhat-you-can model, ranging between $25 and $40. The cost

Seniors also “squeezed” by cost of living From Parliament Hill Wayne Stetski

A few months ago, I wrote about millennials and how they are now “Generation Squeeze.” My office received quite a bit of feedback about that topic. Thank you to everyone who wrote to me to express their views. I have not forgotten about another group that is often finding it difficult to make ends meet: Seniors. In May, I delivered a statement in the House of Commons about older adults in my riding facing financial challenges. This generation too has become “squeezed.” For example, many seniors are providing financial

help to their adult children or their grandchildren while trying to live on a fixed income. Thanks to modern medicine and Canada’s social programs, Canadians are living longer, but pensions and other benefits have not kept up with the rising cost of living. Indeed, in Canada, 15 per cent of seniors currently live in poverty. Some senior women, who may have stayed home to raise children or worked in the family business for little or no salary, have contributed little to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). As a result, they are now faced with financial difficulties. Though they may qualify for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) top-up, the process takes time, and the resulting monthly benefits may fall short of what the individual actually needs. In response, the NDP has proposed

not cutting off the GIS of seniors who are late filing their taxes. Moreover, the party has also proposed a National Seniors’ Strategy committing the federal government to create a long-term action plan that would ensure seniors can maintain an adequate quality of life. When it comes to good quality, affordable housing, seniors are finding the same difficulties as millennials: Rents are increasing at astronomical rates, and just like their younger counterparts who can’t find small starter homes, seniors whose children may have left home are struggling to downsize to smaller homes in an overheated housing market. In some cases, seniors who need smaller units or long-term care may be obliged to move from their longtime community to find housing. Such moves can result in added ex-

pense and sudden social isolation. Compounding this is a lack of affordable, reliable inter-city transit options, especially now that Greyhound has left the region, and air travel options flying out of Cranbrook have been reduced. Seniors needing access to healthcare in larger communities may incur additional expenses as a result. Canadian internet and cell phone prices are some of the highest in the world: Seniors need to stay connected both from a social point of view and for their safety, but the current telecom rates are making this necessity more and more of a luxury as seniors have to decide between paying for cell service or paying for housing and groceries. As some of you may have heard through the grapevine recently, I am indeed closing in on retirement from my career at the Creston and District Community Complex and as well, this being my final column. As I used to joke in the past with people that asked when I was retiring – “still have some community service hours to perform” – I guess I can now advise that they are complete. At least here in an official capacity. I do like to look at time served here however, as providing service to the community, from one end of our valley to another in various capacities and endeavors.

We’ve done a lot, you and I, this past 24 years or so with probably my personal key moments being the passing of the referendum right through to the construction of our revamped community complex and, the icing on the cake, (albeit nine years later), adding a world class park on the side of the hill next to this Jewel of the Kootenays. There have been many other notable achievements or progressions we have seen or been involved with, both in our Valley and throughout the RDCK So, when I mentioned to one of our kids that I was working on my last column and trying to cram a lifetime of experience into 500 words or less, she just looked at me and said “relationships”. After my initial reaction of “pffft” because how could one of my children ever be smarter than me, I realized on that long drive home – that’s exact-

ly what is has been about. Everything from the moment I started has been about my relationship with the people I came into contact with – fellow employees, instructors, public, patrons, management, suppliers, politicians – everyone. It’s not a mind-boggling concept – we all do it from the moment we begin to communicate but how you behave in that relationship is what will define your path. Following a lesson plan we all should have learned in preschool, I have always tried to treat people the way I expect to be treated and it has worked reasonably well for me. As in life, there were ones that I didn’t care to have a relationship with but sometimes that’s not a choice on the menu so you learn the art of tolerance, holding your tongue and picking your battles – a skill we now get to watch being eroded brought to you by social media!

(OK, there is still some good relationship stuff out there – all is not lost…yet.) The amount of people I had the pleasure of meeting or working with in this career is staggering but if you take the approach of assuming each person has something to offer you that will make you a better person in some fashion - sometimes indiscernibly, sometimes pie in the face - hey, how can you go wrong? Even if it’s exhibiting a behavior that you don’t want in your repertoire although luckily, there have only been a few of those. I think one area that is vivid for me comes after interviewing a bazillion lifeguard candidates; stumbling and greener than green, then watching them turn into responsible and engaging young adults in a few years as well as seeing other staff mature and grown into their often changing

This is one reason the NDP is calling for a national pharmacare program that would be another building block towards true universal health care in Canada. It is time that Canadians had a government that worked for them, that helped to improve all aspects of their daily life. If you meet or work with them and not take away anything within yourself, you must not have a soul. So; just remember “relationships” and pattern yourself accordingly and you may find yourself waking up one morning just a touch more tolerant and forgiving with a dash of wisdom. I’m off to encounter new relationships and maintain some of the old favourites. See you in the hot tub!
