Leann Juatco has such brittle bones that she can’t even tell you how many she’s broken. The 16-year old high school student might have a fracture now, but hasn’t gotten it checked out yet.

“My bones are really fragile,” she said. “Just a little bit of a fall can break my bones.”

Even a two-foot drop can have devastating consequences. When Leann slipped while moving from her bed to her wheelchair, both of her arms broke on the way down.

Leann and her mother are from the Philippines. Her mother moved to Radium first, with Leann following in 2017. It’s easier to get around in the Valley than in her homeland, Leann said, adding that many of the buildings here are accessible and that she is grateful for sidewalks, which don’t exist in her old neighbourhood.

While the paths and buildings are more accessible here, making her way through town is still a big challenge, “especially when going up.”

That’s because Leann uses a manual wheelchair. She doesn’t trust electric chairs anymore after an accident in 2014 when her electric chair tipped, leaving her with broken bones, a fractured skull and bleeding in her brain.

Now Leann and her family are fundraising to buy a $9,000 device called SmartDrive that would add power to her manual wheelchair.

Leann had a chance to test out the device and was thrilled to use it.

“It’s easier to control,” she said. “It feels safer.”

Leann currently relies on her arms and helpers to push her where she needs to go and believes the device would allow her to gain more freedom. She said the SmartDrive would allow her “to be independent and go by myself anywhere I go.”

She has two younger siblings – a three year old and a baby – and her step-father Mark Brough said the family has “an enormous excess” of baby items.

“We could probably clothe about a dozen babies,” he said.

The garage sale will take place on Saturday, June 22nd from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 103 Edelweiss Street in Radium. There is also a GoFundMe page at www.gofundme. com/leann-juatco-smart-drive-fund.

Leann plans to go to university and take visual arts when she finishes high school. She expects that the SmartDrive would help put the future she envisions for herself within her reach.

Closing the gap on Aboriginal grad rates Metis student with two learning disabilities “really proud” to be graduating

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Kahleah Bodry, a Metis student who has two learning disabilities and who “didn’t even think that grade 12 would even come,” is on the cusp of graduating from high school and heading to university.

It’s a future she wasn’t able to imagine for herself a few short years ago.

“I’m not really good with school,” she said. “I was always kind of frustrated because [school] was just kind of hard because I just didn’t get it and the teachers didn’t know and so they just couldn’t help me.”

Her struggles began to change when she was diagnosed with a reading disorder and a mathematical disorder. She was able to have accommodations made in her classes, including using a calculator in math class and having a reader and scribe support her when she takes her exams.

“Now that I have accommodations, I’m able to get my work in, I’m able to understand how I’m learning and how I need to tell the teachers how I learn,” she said.

When Kahleah moved to the Valley in Grade 10, she found the Aboriginal Education Support Services – and Monica Fisher in particular – at David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) incredibly helpful.

“She cares a whole lot about the students. She cares about what happens to them, the outcomes for things,” Kahleah said. “She’s basically kept me on a very strict schedule to hand all my assignments in and everything, and I find it very helpful.”

From providing learning strategies, tutoring, food and more, Kahleah said the program is “basically there to help you get through school.”

Kahleah Bodry stands as an example of the continuing rise in Aboriginal grad rates in the Valley. She credits the strong support found at the high school for her success.

“I’ve cried in there a couple times. I just get stressed about having not-good-enough grades, and they’d help me, making a schedule for what I need to hand in to get the grades I need,” she said.

The two Aboriginal Education Support staff helped her so much that Kahleah doesn’t talk about how she navigated high school. Instead she sees her scholastic achievements as a team effort, saying: “once we figured out what we needed to graduate then we put it all together.”

Kahleah said that, while she doesn’t pull in the highest grades, she’s really pleased with her marks.

“I never actually worked this hard in my whole life,

but I feel like I’ve really like overcome a lot of the challenges I’ve had. Yeah, it’s harder for me to get the grades I want, but still I work really hard at it. I’m really proud I’m actually going to graduate,” she said.

Also proud of her is DTSS principal Darren Danyluk, who called Kahleah “a pretty driven young lady” who is “well along the path of planning her future.”

Mr. Danyluk said the school has an overall graduation rate of around 90 per cent, but that across the district there is about a 10 per cent difference in graduation rates between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students.

“Over the longer span of time I’ve seen a consistent parallel, with the gap closing,” he said about his 21-year tenure at DTSS. “We still fare well, but we’ve got lots of work to do... It is something we look at and feel pretty strongly about and proud about.”

Kahleah is heading to Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops after graduation, where she is going to study biology. Once she earns her degree, she wants to head to the Maritimes to specialize in marine biology.

Picking the Kamloops campus was an easy choice for her because she had already seen it and taken a few tester classes there, including a lecture on pirates and a CSI geology course on how sand could be used to solve a crime. Her scouting trip was offered through the Aboriginal Education Support program, which took around a dozen students to check out a series of campuses and find a good fit.

Kahleah encourages other students to ask for what they need.

“If you’re struggling in school, just try to reach out to a teacher... The main thing is just to ask for help and not just think you can do it yourself because I used to think I could just do it myself but it turns out I couldn’t do it myself and you need those supports,” she said.

For other First Nations students, she said: “Keep working hard, and then you’ll get what you want. And don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

BC Transit seeks public feedback on Columbia Valley system

Through an online survey, BC Transit is looking for input in areas such as weekend service, Edgewater and Radium commuter routes, and Invermere local service.

“We are asking the public to give their feedback to help shape the future of transit in the Columbia Valley,” said Chelsea Mossey, manager of government relations for BC Transit. “We are looking for everybody [to respond]. Definitely people using transit, but also people that could potentially use it if transit could change.”

The service is a jointly-funded partnership between BC Transit and the Regional District of East Kootenay. The Columbia Valley Transit System currently provides approximately 3,500 service hours annually, with approximately 8,000 rides in the 2018/19 fiscal year. The program offers service from Edgewater to Canal Flats.

Ms. Mossey said BC Transit works to get community feedback every few years, so this is a “routine check-in” on service in the Columbia Valley. The survey opened June 4 and has had approximately 45 completed survey responses so far, said Ms. Mossey. The survey is open until July 8th.

NOTICE OF WATERMAIN FLUSHING

The municipality will be flushing its community water system for the next 6 weeks. This program, carried out twice yearly, is necessary to maintain the quality of our water supply. There may be some short interruptions in the water service and temporary discoloration of water as a result of the sediment and organic materials that are being flushed from the water mains. During this period, disinfection by chlorination will be continued.

This past week, June 10th through June 16th, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 82 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Wednesday, June 12th an individual called the RCMP to report she had fallen victim to a scam. The complainant said she received a call from the CIBC “Fraud squad” who claimed there was suspicious activity on her account. The caller requested the victim purchase $2,000 in Google Play gift cards. The victim agreed and provided the card information to the fraudster. The following day the fraudster called back and told her she needed to go to her bank and obtain a money order which was required to clear the “suspicious activities.” The victim’s bank recognized the fraud and alerted the victim, who then reported the scam to police. The Columbia Valley RCMP would like to remind individuals that legitimate businesses do not accept gift cards as payment. Police are also asking employees of businesses selling gift cards to be aware of these scams and alert potential victims.

• On Friday, June 14th at about 4:15 p.m., numerous calls were received about a possible impaired driver who was driving from shoulder to shoulder through Kootenay National Park on Highway 93 South. The

male driver stopped at one point and threw up on the side of the road. Officers responded and located the vehicle as it crossed the highway centre line, forcing a police vehicle onto the shoulder near Stoddart Creek Road and Highway 93/95. A traffic stop was conducted and an impaired driving investigation was initiated, which resulted in the driver, a 42-year-old male from Calgary, being arrested for impaired driving. The driver had three children, all under the age of six, in the vehicle. The driver provided breath samples that were over the legal limit. The vehicle was towed and impounded and officers contacted the mothers of the children to make arrangements to get them home safely. The driver was held in cells until he was sober and released on a Promise to Appear in court at a later date.

• On Saturday, June 15th, at approximately 3 a.m., the Columbia Valley RCMP were dispatched to a possible fight at Redstreak Campground in Kootenay National Park. Officers attended and found a group of young campers sitting around a campfire talking loudly. The group of campers agreed to lower the volume of their conversations. There was no evidence of a fight.

• On Saturday, June 15th, Columbia Valley RCMP recovered a Supercycle Storm 18 speed bike in an alley near Hot Springs Road in Fairmont Hot Springs. If you’re missing a bike that matches this description, please contact the Columbia Valley RCMP and quote file number 2019-1341.

Stacks of fun at the BIG Book Sale Submitted by Friends of the Library You’ll find the best bargains of the summer at Invermere’s twelfth annual BIG Book Sale hosted by the Friends of the Invermere Public Library on Saturday, July 13th from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Columbia Valley Centre.

The Friends sell good quality, used and generously-discounted books of every imaginable genre: fiction and non-fiction, for adults, youth and children. Look for stacks of books labelled best sellers, fantasy, mystery, romance, adventure, historical fiction, science fiction, classics, cooking, travel, crafts, history, philosophy, gardening, health, board books, and picture books.

The BIG Book Sale is a community project that has, over the life of the event, raised more than $97,000 for book purchases, equipment and community programs at the Invermere Public Library.

Generous community members donate used books

year-round; Friends of the Library sort the books according to genre; volunteers transport and set up books in the hall; and shoppers fill their satchels with reading treasures. In 2018, approximately 100 volunteers and 1,500 shoppers contributed to the sale’s success.

If you have books you would like to contribute, drop them off in the labelled donation station outside the Book Donation Centre, a grey barn-shaped building south across 4th Street from the Invermere Public Library and adjacent to the Invermere Court House. Not wanted are Readers’ Digest condensed books, National Geographic magazines, textbooks or tattered books.

Mark July 13th on your calendar, gather up sturdy shopping bags, and make your contribution by supplying yourself with a summer reading stash or books to last you through the year.

Supervised garbage It’s going to be harder for those who want to part with their couches, TVs, hot-water tanks and construction materials to abandon them at the Invermere Transfer Station in July and August, thanks to a pilot project where two employees will be on hand to maintain the site.

Chris Prosser, the chief administrative officer for the District of Invermere (DOI), said the pilot project is to control illegal dumping, get an idea on where users reside and make sure garbage bins are full before they’re emptied.

“We do feel that there’s a potential for some cost savings,” he said.

The transfer station will be closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays but open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. the rest of the week.

After the pilot project, council will have the opportunity to decide whether to keep staff on site, to revert to the unsupervised status quo, or to close the transfer station and direct residents to the Windermere landfill.

Parks bylaw The DOI is “closer to being less ridiculous” about dogs at the beach said Councillor Gerry Taft about an updated parks bylaw which will allow dogs on leashes on the sand at Kinsmen Beach from September 16th to March 31st.

Dogs can’t be on the sand while bathers are present

due to health and safety concerns, said Mr. Prosser.

Also of note in the parks bylaw: no one is allowed to go into the water “without being properly clothed in a bathing suit.” Skinny dippers and shorts wearers beware.

Icy treats iced Sweet Mountain Shave Ice requested permission to offer icy treats from a parking stall beside Cenotaph Plaza.

“I won’t support this as it stands,” said Councillor Greg Anderson. “But I’d like to hear from the (neighbouring) businesses. Maybe they’re madly in love with it.”

Staff will talk with those businesses to see if they would enjoy having a street vendor nearby.

Crowded birthday Councillor Taft said there was a proliferation of events scheduled to be in town on Saturday, June 15th, which happens to be his birthday, and that it “would be nice to spread some of those events out over the year.”

Councillor Kayja Becker reminded council that the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce is working on an events calendar to do just that.

There was no word on whether Councillor Taft is rescheduling his birthday.

To bag or not to bag Invermere council is looking at developing a committee to talk about plastic bags and decide how to proceed with reducing or eliminating their use.

Canal Flats Council briefs

By Dean Midyette Special to the Pioneer The Official Community Plan for the Village of Canal Flats was passed into law at the regular Council meeting Monday, June 10th. In addition to the ratification of the OCP, Canal Flats council also adopted the associated Zoning and Delegation bylaws.

A grant of $150,000 has been approved to fund

the Kootenay River Flood Risk Assessment and Flood Mapping project. Work on the project will take place in the coming months.

Council voted to amend an outdoor pavilion project that could be funded up to 75 per cent by the Columbia Basin Trust as long as the grant status will not be affected. At issue is whether the pavilion should have indoor or outdoor public washroom facilities.

Event overload

There are some weeks at the Pioneer where our staff photographer literally drives around the Valley, looking for people doing something photo-worthy. There are no scheduled events, no interesting opportunities and your editor here has no idea what will go on that week’s front page.

Then there are times like last weekend. There were events popping out of every vergée of the Valley. Don’t believe me? The ones that we at the Pioneer knew about included: the museum’s opening tea (see right); the second annual Pride in the Park event (see page 2); the Ursus & Us Bear Day (see front and page 25); the opening of the Invermere Farmers Market (see page 14); and the Family Fishing Day (see page 7). Those were just the events we had resources to cover. There was also live music at Christ Church Trinity and the Lions Hall, and the Hospice Society hike and walk. Oh yes, the Branch Out Bike Tour also landed on this busy weekend. We have a story and photos from that event, but unfortunately not enough space in this week’s paper. Look for it in the next edition instead, along with some other fabulous content that simply wouldn’t fit in the constraints of our newspaper this week, thanks, in large part, to the volume of events that took place.

As Councillor Gerry Taft pointed out at the last District of Invermere Council meeting, perhaps events could be spread out a little bit. We at the Pioneer would add our applause to that statement.

It is nearly impossible to attend all these events on behalf of the paper. We have some kindhearted photographers in the Valley who help fill the gap when we can’t be at everything (shout out to Pat Morrow and Cortney Pitts this week!). But even if we can manage to be in 10 places over the course of a day, there simply is not space for us to fit a good range of photos from each event. And we are but one small piece in the events puzzle. Think about the number of attendees your event could have if you were not competing with multiple other happenings that same day. Think of the stretch on volunteer time, resources like tables and chairs, venue locations, and promotional space.

The Pioneer keeps a master list of events we know are coming up. If you’re unsure what else is going on in any given day, feel free to give us a call and we can tell you what may already be scheduled. If you have an event planned, make sure you let us know and we’ll add it to the list. And check out our newly redesigned Out and About in next wek’s Pioneer, where you can see what’s happening around the Valley that week!

Events are great. Having things for locals and visitors to do helps promote a sense of community, brings us together, encourages guests to come back or stay longer on their visits here, and makes for fun memories. But please, if you are planning to create your own festival, fundraiser, or fete, take the time to check what else is likely already happening that weekend. Then pick a different day.

Tyler McGowan won the major prize for the biggest fish caught, a 15 1/2 inch rainbow trout. The prize for the most fish caught went to William Walta (pictured at right). The Lake Windermere and District Rod and Gun Club and the Conservation Officer Service would like to thank all the families who attended, the BC Family Fishing Society, Sgt. Darren Kakuno, the Aquatic Invasive Species team, BC Wildfire staff, and WildSafe BC for being there and for their excellent displays and demonstrations that helped make the day a success!

I have a woodworking hobby. I am in my shop making things for more days than I am elsewhere.

My wood working tools are extensive and the value of those tools far exceeds the total value of everything I have ever made. Nevertheless, woodworking is like art: it is the design and the craft that provides the value and it is not to be measured by financial return. So, nails are a part of my curiosity.

Today carpenters places scarce value on a single nail. If a builder sees a nail roll off a roof it is of no consequence; it is a “so what” moment.

However, for most of history nails were highly valued. For thousands of years each nail was forged one at a time, one after another. A forged nail took about fifteen minutes to make. At today’s values a nail would cost at least $4 each or more.

Until about 1750 nails were the most expensive part of wood construction.

These nails were made by nailers or nailors. Almost every village had blacksmiths. Wood structures could not be built without a supply of nails. Craftsmen would use a rod about 9mm diameter and heat it red hot. Then they would hammer until there was a four-sided tapered shank. And then form the head, known as the crown or rose. There: one nail is made.

Then proceed to make the second, then the third and continue until their workday ended.

While the old forged nails were expensive compared to today’s wire nails, they had some superior characteristics. A forged nail is 130% harder to extract.

A wire nail, the kind you get at a local hardware store, has smooth sides and a cone shaped point. Wire nails spread the wood grain apart. A forged nail has a flat tip that sheers the wood and pushes the

fibres inward like a colony of Velcro tentacles. The tapered shape of forged nails means that the further the nail is driven into the wood the more the fibres are pushed down and the tighter the grip. Very few people could pull a forged nail out of a block of wood with a regular hammer.

Since forged nails shear rather than spread, the wood is less likely to split and the nail can be placed closer to the end of a board.

Forged nails were once so valuable that when buildings burned down children were used to sift through the ashes to collect the nails. Some persons burned down their cabin to collect the nails for building a new one. A building being torn down had persons splitting boards to retrieve the nails.

Some nails were made of hardwood and were driven in after a pilot hole had been drilled.

Given the extraordinary holding capacity of a forged nail, manufacturers in the mid 19th century mass-produced cut nails. A cut nail looks somewhat like a forged nail but they are machine cut from a flat sheet of steel. These nails are tapered on two sides and have superior gripping when compared to wire nails. They do not, however, have the amazing grip of a forged nail which is tapered on four sides.

Cut nails can be made with diamond or rose heads and they make strong fasteners for antique furniture. Cut nails are available today in some hardware stores, as are forged nails in specialty shops.

Forged nails were the primary fastener from 1800 BC until 1810 AD. Forged or cut nails add a lot of character to a rustic project.

This is my article for June and if, by luck, I nailed it, I hope it was with a forged nail.

instruments are stationed in an open field at Nipika, and they stand in sharp contrast to their natural, green surroundings. The same instruments are used at the Fortress station.

Regardless of time of day, if there’s a storm the team will be there to observe it.

“The storms dictate the shifts. Whenever precipitation is happening, we’ll be there,” says Dr. Déry.

The team is using the instruments to gather data such as the fall speed and direction of precipitation, the amount of accumulated precipitation, and the atmospheric conditions in which different types of precipitation occur.

“There’s incredible differences in what we’re seeing on our side versus what’s happening on the other side,” says Dr. Déry.

Ms. Almonte adds that “there are times when it’s hot and sunny on one side of the divide, and then storming on the other.”

Ms. Almonte explains that the dissimilarities in observation between the two sides can be attributed to the fact that air from the Pacific Ocean can help form precipitation on the western side of the mountain. Once that precipitation is formed, it tends to be released at the top of the mountain, which leaves the eastern side more dry.

“One of our big concerns was that we wouldn’t actually see any storms, but thankfully there have been a lot,” says Dr. Déry.

While it may seem like May and June were the months chosen to conduct the experiment because they’re relatively warmer than the winter, that isn’t exactly the case.

“We chose May and June because those are the months that this area receives the most precipitation,” says Ms. Almonte.

Once the study is completed at the end of June, the team is hoping the data they’ve gathered can be used to enhance our understanding of precipitation, and also provide insight into the question of how storms behave as they cross the continental divide.

“One of the reasons we’re doing this is to improve numerical weather predictions, improve weather models, and understand precipitation and all of its complex formations,” says Dr. Déry. “Precipitation is still something that’s really difficult to simulate in models because of the complex processes in the atmosphere, and it’s especially challenging to predict in the mountains.”

Storm-watching team of scientists study at Nipika

Dr. Stephen Déry doesn’t chase storms. Instead, he lets them come to him. For the last month, Dr. Déry and a team of undergraduate students from various universities across Canada have been living off the grid at Nipika Mountain Resort as they undertake a scientific experiment to study storms across the continental divide.

Dr. Déry’s group is one of two teams involved in the Storms and Precipitation Across the Continental Divide Experiment (SPADE), a study that aims to understand the atmospheric conditions leading to storms and precipitation across the continental divide.

“There have been very few campaigns like this anywhere in the world, which makes this project unique,” says Dr. Déry.

The SPADE project is a collaborative research study between the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), University of Saskatchewan (USask), and University of Manitoba (UofM). The experiment is funded by the Global Water Futures program, a research initiative supported by the federal government’s Canada First Research Excellence Fund.

The design of the experiment was a joint effort between Dr. Déry, Dr. Julie Thériault from UQAM, Dr. John Pomeroy from USask, and Dr. Ronald Stewart from UofM. To execute the experiment, 10 undergraduate students from the four universities are also working on the study.

“It’s a collaborative project which is really cool because you get to work with people from across the country. We’ve all gotten to know each other, and everyone has gotten along super well.” says Juris Almonte. Ms. Almonte received her Masters of Sciences with a specialization in atmospheric sciences from the University of Manitoba. She is currently employed by UNBC as a project manager for SPADE. Currently, there are two main stations for the SPADE project. Dr. Déry, Ms. Almonte, and two other undergraduate students are stationed at Nipika Mountain Resort on the eastern side of the continental divide. On the western side, at approximately the same elevation and 50 km away, is another group stationed at Fortress Powerline in Kananaskis Country. This group is comprised of the other half of the team, and the researchers rotate stations regularly between Fortress and Nipika.

In order to execute the aims of the project, the teams have a variety of high-tech instruments used to measure precipitation, atmospheric changes, and weather. The

ICAN garage sale this Saturday The Invermere Companion Animal Network (ICAN) is hosting their annual garage sale Saturday, June 22nd and Sunday, June 23rd.

ICAN fills the gap for household pets without a home. The nonprofit organization rescues, shelters, spays and neuters and re-homes animals in the Columbia Valley.

From videos to pictures to biographies of each cat, ICAN volunteers do everything they can to re-home adoptable animals.

The maximum inferred discharge rate of the runoff water through evaporation and exfiltration will be up to 5 liters per second. The ponds function continuously. The surface water runoff is made up of excess snow melt and rain water. The water is analyzed regularly by a certified laboratory and parameters have never exceeded the maximum acceptable concentration of the British Columbia Approved Water Quality Guidelines.

Sparking the ignition on electric carshare program

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Wildsight Invermere is getting closer to reality for an electric carshare program, dubbed ‘Spark,’ for the Columbia Valley.

Since discussing the program idea with members at the AGM in April 2018, a Wildsight committee has been looking into how to make the dream a reality. The committee now has many of the details well in hand, and are just about ready to fork over the approximately $52,000 to buy a Chevy Bolt.

“We’ve done a lot of work on the fundraising side to get most of the funds we need for the carshare,” said Cam Gillies, Wildsight Invermere vice president.

Support has come in from some corporate and private donations as well as from Columbia Basin Trust, Imagine Invermere and the Regional District of East Kootenay. They have now launched a public fundraising initiative, seeking corporate and private donations through a tiered sponsorship program.

Wildsight’s plan is to have an app through which users can check on availability and book the car. Drivers will register with Spark for access to the vehicle.

The plan is for the vehicle to be parked in a central, fixed location in Invermere with its own dedicated charger, though the details have yet to be worked out. But overall, Mr. Gillies said, Wild-

sight is confident they are close to reality for the carshare program. There has been strong interest from the public to sign up and start using the program, Mr. Gillies reported, and they anticipate a wide range of users from people wanting a car for a couple hours, to multi-day trips for others.

“We think we have a really good model that will provide accessible transportation for people in the Columbia Valley, that will allow them to get into an electric vehicle and try it out,” said Mr. Gillies. “We’re really excited to be doing this here.”

Rental costs have not been determined yet, though Wildsight has already decided they will not have a subscription fee or monthly membership fee, to encourage more users to sign up.

Wildsight chose the Chevrolet Bolt as it has good range, it is available for purchase (an important factor given the high demand of electric vehicles in B.C.), and the five-seat vehicle makes for a “very practical car that people in the Kootenays can use,” said Mr. Gillies.

According to the Spark brochure, the cost fo the car, accessories and operating hardware / software is about $70,000.

Wildsight has secured funding for the first 75 per ent of total project expenses and is now looking for the final 25 per cent to launch Spark.

Inside the brain of a kid cartoonist

Sawyer Lester took a crack at his first cartoon when he was 7 or 8; the subject matter was a young boy’s endless source of mirth: potty talk. The copycat cartoon showed a man in a doctor’s office, concerned his bottom might be broken. It’s OK, quipped the doctor, “everyone has a crack in their bum.”

Copying other’s cartoons is far behind the young artist now.

“I tried to copy drawing techniques from books, and it morphed into my own [techniques].”

Sawyer, a student at Windermere Elementary School, is an avid cartoonist who wants to share his work with the greater community. He tells the Pioneer that his early cartoons were to supplement his stories.

“I wanted to be an author, so I started making books about my own adventures,” Sawyer says.

His books were about superheroes, both existing and his own made-up characters, inspired from reading the adventures of the fictitious Captain Underpants.

Now, mom Ashley estimates he draws about an hour per day. His teacher con-

firms there are cartoons by Sawyer in many of his school sheets.

His sequential art pieces often follow the adventures of Brent and Skippy, a couple friends based off the characters from the movie Dumb and Dumber. The characters are expressive, with varied poses through the frames. One cartoon can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an entire day, depending on its complexity.

Sawyer has some ideas about what should happen with his soon-to-be-famous cartoons.

“So, will I give you a cartoon, like, once a week?,” Sawyer asks the Pioneer.

For now, we agree, he needs to focus on his schoolwork. And, pipes up his mom Ashley, “cartooning is enough of a distraction already!”

Sawyer would one day like to become a cartoonist for real. His doodles provide a creative outlet, something he does for the sheer enjoyment of creation. He might even sell a few of his cartoons this summer. If you spot a lemonade / cartoon stand, be sure to stop and buy a signed copy of a cartoon from the soon-to-be-famous illustrator Sawyer Lester.

Students at David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) will be more in control of what and how they learn when they head back to school in the fall.

Principal Darren Danyluk said that there will be no formal lessons offered in the second period from Monday to Thursday but that students will be responsible for showing up – in whichever supervised room they choose – and using their time wisely.

“It’s not free time. It’s not a spare period,” he said.

“It’s time for them to manage their learning... where they can drive the bus and decide how they want to use that curricular time.”

Whether students use those periods to ask their teachers for extra help with their math homework, to catch up on reading for their English classes, to work on group projects or to cram for tests, they will have four 40-minute time slots each week to focus on whatever they choose.

The current schedule at DTSS was in place before Mr. Danyluk arrived at the school 21 years ago.

“It worked, and it still works,” he said, but he’s been hearing that students are getting increasingly busy and overwhelmed. With sports, dance, theatre, skiing and all their other pursuits, he said students are wanting extra hours in their days.

“We want them to be able to manage their time and their commitments,” he said. “We are trying to create autonomous students... You can only be autonomous when you’re given that latitude to make the judgement

DTSS teachers won’t offer prepared lessons during the flexible periods. Instead they will be in their classrooms and available to assist students, answer questions and provide whatever supports the students need.

Making up for missed exams, getting assistance with homework and other demands that can fall at lunchtime or after school can now be scheduled during the open periods to keep students on track for a productive and balanced year.

“Time management is a huge feature for life after high school,” Mr. Danyluk said. “We’re over-scheduling our kids and being their external brain. You’ve got to be here. You’ve got to be there. We’re driving them here, driving them there. They’re just following orders, and they’re not really engaging in designing their own week, their own plan. Whereas with post-secondary, it’s all on you, so you can Netflix all day long.”

Mr. Danyluk has taken field trips to three others schools to see how they’ve implemented similar schedules and has been impressed with how well it’s working for them.

“I didn’t find a single student who wanted to revert and lose this,” he said.

The teachers he spoke with were also pleased with the “great gains” the students have been making.

Mr. Danyluk has heard from parents who have “good critical questions” about the new schedule and how the school plans to hold students accountable for their attendance and efforts. Jim Maione was “just wandering around swinging my metal detector” earlier this spring at the old David Thompson Secondary School site when the beeps alerted him to a buried treasure he thought was going to be a quarter. But his find was of much more value: it was a class ring from 1980 that was engraved with the long-ago owner’s name.

“I searched her up on Facebook,” he said. He made some calls and tracked down Mance Visentin in Cranbrook.

“The first thing I said was ‘this isn’t a crank call,’” he recalled.

Even so, that’s what Ms. Visentin thought.

“When he first called, I thought maybe it was like a scam or something. I had almost forgotten that I had lost it. Actually I had talked to my mom and she remembers me losing it because she had paid for it,” Ms. Visentin said with a laugh.

That reminder brought back memories of her own.

“I was pretty upset that I’d lost it,” she said. “It

meant a lot to me, and back then it was the in thing to order a grad ring.”

Ms. Visentin bought a replacement ring, which was a better fit, but never liked it as much as the one that slipped off her finger on the ball diamond 39 years earlier.

When Mr. Maione met with Ms. Visentin to reunite her with her ring, he said: “She was doing a pretty good job of being excited... She didn’t stop grinning the whole time.”

Mr. Maione took up metal detecting several years ago after he got a sleep apnea machine and found himself suddenly feeling wide awake, refreshed and with more than enough time to start a hobby. Metal detecting – or “dirt fishing” – was going to offer some good exercise and incentive for him to get outside and be more active.

Over the years, he has unearthed lots of coins, around a dozen rings and a few lockets and medallions.

Most of his finds don’t include the owner’s name or clues for how to track them down, but he returns his treasures to the original owners when he can.

But when the summer winds down, the 18-year-old twins will head off in separate directions, with Kaitlyn literally aiming for the moon and Braeden set to explore the past.

the most part,” he said. “As a family we’ve also done a lot of travelling, so I’ve gotten to see a decent bit of history.”

Those explorations included checking out historic sites in Mexico and the Caribbean.

“All I know is I’d like to play soccer. I’m planning on playing as long as I can,” he said. “I’ve been playing pretty much my whole life.”

Braeden plays centre back. When he’s not in a game or practicing, he’s watching the pros on TV and learning from them.

“On my team I do a lot of yelling. I’m normally telling people what to do – which is one of the reasons why I got a scholarship – because the communication aspect of soccer is pretty important,” he said.

Braeden is modest about his soccer accomplishments, but Kaitlyn – who has attended many of his games – raved about her twin’s talent.

“I think he’s amazing, but of course I do. I’m so proud of him,” she said.

Braeden feels the same way about her.

“Kaitlyn works hard... She likes to push herself,” he said. Turning to Kaitlyn, he added: “I think with astrophysics it’s going to be hard for you, but I still think you can do it. You just might go through a couple of tears, but it’s OK. It happens. Nothing’s easy.”

It’s a lesson Kaitlyn is already prepared to face.

“In Grade 10 I struggled more with the space side of things than with stuff on earth so I assumed I couldn’t do it, like it wouldn’t be possible. But I love it so much that I don’t care. Even if I have to work harder at it, it doesn’t matter. I still want to do it,” she said.

“She could end up anywhere if she continues with astrophysics. I could go anywhere too,” said Braeden.

For the Hessel twins, even the sky is no limit.

from Braeden, who is heading to Ambrose University in Calgary on a soccer scholarship. He is planning to major in history.

“It seems a bit weird, but I would really love to go to space,” said Kaitlyn. “I always loved stars. I used to just sit outside because I love it. I always have.”

Kaitlyn hopes to one day work for either the Canadian Space Agency or NASA. She said NASA is planning to do a moon launch in 2024 and that “it would be super cool to go and see that.”

She’s been interested in astrophysics – the physics of space – ever since she watched a video showing a bowling ball and feathers being dropped at the same time, both with gravity and without. When gravity was involved, the bowling ball obviously landed first. But when gravity wasn’t a factor, Kaitlyn was stunned to see the feathers hit the floor at the same time as the bowling ball.

“It was just incredible to see. I didn’t think it was possible,” she said.

Kaitlyn has become increasingly fascinated with how different things are in space and wants to devote her career to learning more. She’s been reading astronaut Chris Hadfield’s book An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth to find out about his experiences in the sky.

“You just float all the time, and they actually race to see how fast someone can put something in the garbage because it’s so complicated,” she said. “Everything’s different. Like they have velcro attached to spoons because they float away so you have to stick them to the wall...

Everything about it is just so captivating, and I would love to be a part of that.”

Through her research, she also found out that being in zero gravity causes people’s hearts to shrink.

“Your heart doesn’t have to pump against the force of gravity anymore so it shrinks in size and your immune system gets weaker,” she said. “They’re trying to figure out how to prevent that so they can stay in space longer.”

Kaitlyn wants to blast off for the International Space Station to study heart sizes, zero gravity, stars, space and more.

“I love studying and doing science and stuff like that, and that’s all they do up there,” she said.

While she’s going to miss her friends and family and her built-in best friend from birth, Kaitlyn said moving across the country is “a small sacrifice for what I would like to do.”

As for Braeden, he’s not sure how it will feel to be so far from Kaitlyn.

“I want to say it’s not a big deal, but it’s on and off because it’s nice being a twin sometimes. But at the same time it’s nice to have that break away from each other,” he said.

Braeden isn’t sure if a history major is the right path for him in the long term, but said he’ll figure that out as he moves through university.

“I have a variety of options to choose from,” he said, but since he has the opportunity to play soccer on scholarship and take classes along the way, he decided to take a kick at history.

“It interests me so I thought if I’m going to go [to university], I want to do something that interests me for

Paiten is moving to Kelowna to take the culinary-arts program at the Okanagan College after finding that the chef-training program at David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) helped her fit in at school.

Her dreams are delicious: she hopes to open a classy restaurant, write her own cookbook and maybe even teach adult cooking courses.

“The culinary-arts program definitely helped me get through high school,” she said. “It really helped me open up. I got to come out of my shell and try new things and it ended up being something that I enjoyed. It’s a nice hobby to have, and it’s just relaxing for me.”

Paiten, who sees food and plating as forms of art, gives the program credit for helping her become more creative.

“I just love how everything fits together in some way, shape or form,” she said. “My favourite part is plating and getting to see how everything comes together and

contrasts. I think it’s just really beautiful.”

But all that lovely food required an equally-arty canvas, so she took to the kiln to make her own dishes, including plates, bowls, cups and mugs.

“I thought it would be great to use my art style to make something that I needed in life such as simple things like dishes,” she said.

Paiten is thrilled to eat her own food off the dinnerware she’s made and matches her colourful dishes with the meals she’s prepared.

“I love it. It makes me feel like I’ve succeeded, and I’m so excited to go further with that feeling,” she said.

Her coffee bowls and tea cups are so vibrant and cheery that they can even make for better mornings.

“They’re a really vibrant colour. I think that helps you get up in the morning and you can look at it. It’s like: ‘Oh this is so bright. I feel bright now. It’s going to be a nice day,’” she said.

At the DTSS ceremony on Thursday, June 13th that celebrated the accomplishments of the school’s top students, Paiten nabbed the chef-training and most-improved artist awards both for her dishes and the food heaped on top of them.

CVCF awards more than $70,000 to local grads Submitted by Columbia Valley Community Foundation This year, through the Arnold Ellis Scholarship fund, $65,000 was awarded to 52 local students. In just five years, his scholarship fund has assisted a total of 207 local youth with over $345,000 in student awards. An amazing legacy indeed.

The CVCF is honoured to announce the first recipient of the Alan J. Witherspoon Memorial Fine Arts Fund, to Lucas Persson. Lucas will receive $3500.00 to support his graphic design education at the Centre for Arts and Technology in Kelowna.

CVCF was also honoured to support two students

pursuing trades and technical studies through the Erwin Kloos Memorial Fund and an additional two students through the Bidder Bursary Fund.

“I loved teaching,” she said. “I like the creativity, and the humour. It brought a lot out in me, and we all brought it [the humour] out in each other.”

She remembers fondly the way parents would chip in to help out with field trips and in the classroom.

“I have some great fond memories looking back on different trips we took,” she recalls. One that really stands out is when her class did a unit on rocks, they got to tour the gypsum mine, with students even getting a ride on the back of a big loader.

But in 2003, she suffered a stroke and, once again in a moment’s time, her life changed drastically. Ms. Newhouse admits to struggling with her memory but she remembers that date well. It was May long weekend. From then on, her life’s path has been dictated by the demands of her stroke.

“If you have a stroke, you’re tired all the time. You’re exhausted,” she admits.

But she had learned early on in life how to cope with change. Being in a military family, she said, “you learn to be resilient.”

Ms. Newhouse says while she is now officially off the clock, she feels like she has been retired since her stroke. But even now, snippets of her life as a teacher drift back into her in surprising ways. A plumber who showed up to her house turned out to be a former student of hers who remembered her well. Moments like these remind Ms. Newhouse that, for a girl who grew up with no roots, she is firmly planted in the hearts and minds of her former students here in the Columbia Valley. And that is a legacy worth remembering.

Onidas Chasse, age 86, currently of Cranbrook and a former long time resident of Radium Hot Springs, passed away Friday June 14th, 2019 at East Kootenay Regional Hospital He was born February 21, 1933 in Saint-Moise, Quebec.

Onidas lived in the Kootenays since 1968 where he worked in the forest industry for many years. He loved sports, golfing, and bowling. He was always a very generous and patient man.

Onidas is survived by his wife Marie, 7 children; Jean-Pierre (Marie), Jacques (Shelley), Danielle (Keith), Marcel (Len), Gaston (Loreen), Christine (Ralph), Isabelle (Kelly), 13 grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren, one brother, and two sisters.

Fur the love of bears There was ‘bearly’ a showdown between an attendee and a grinning mascot beside the bear trap at the Ursus & Us Bear Day held last Saturday, June 15th in downtown Invermere. A BC Conservation Officer (at right) gave a demonstration to an attentive audience. The event, hosted by Wildsight Invermere, featured an array of speakers, displays, and demonstrations about the awareness needed to live in harmony with bears here in the Columbia Valley.

“Instead of a pub crawl, it’s a porch crawl,” describes Ms. Evanson. “There’s a band at each porch. The final one ends up with a big music jam at Edgewater’s community park for everyone.”

Then Saturday, July 6th, gates open at 11 a.m. with the first band performing at 12:15 p.m., with acts throughout the day until 10 p.m. Saturday night is the after-party dance at the hall with the Mexican fiesta band, Quinta Kalavera.

Sunday, July 7th is designed to raise the level of skill of attending musicians.

This year’s workshops include The Lovebullies, who will present a song writing session. Mike Wallace will offer instruction on drums – mixing live and electronic beats. Sylvia Power, Dean Kendrick and friends will explore the possibilities and the traditions of jamming. These sessions are designed for aspiring musicians, but all festival ticket holders and Steamboat Mountain Music Society members are welcome to attend for free, with a $5 charge for non-members. Bring your voice, instrument, and notebook.

Kick off your summer in style at the 8th annual Steamboat Mountain Music Festival happening July 5-7th.

The event brings a party of performers together for a weekend of merriment and music. This year’s festival features acts from as close as Edgewater to as far away as Mexico, bringing an eclectic mix of indie rock, folk, jazz, rock, reggae and more to the main stage.

Steamboat Mountain Music Festival is a labour of love for the six-member board, and a team of about 50 volunteers that pull the weekend-long event off each year. Organizers are still looking for a few more volunteers to help out in areas such as manning the gate, organizing parking or doing security detail, reports board member Michele Evanson.

Ms. Evanson has been involved with Steamboat since the beginning, when the plan was hatched by her husband John McRobbie (the musical director) and other area musicians.

“I love the music. I love the variety of the amazing bands,” Ms. Evanson shares of the appeal of Steamboat Mountain Music Festival. She also loves the sense of community the event fosters, and the support for local musicians through the festival.

Each year the festival raises money for a bursary to go towards something music-related, whether that be musical education, a new instrument, or perhaps to attend a workshop. Fundraising efforts for the bursary include a guitar raffle and the annual rubber duck race which sends 200 rubber duckies down the Edgewater flume.

NOTICE OF LAND CODE AUTHORIT Y The Shuswap Indian Band Land Code was enacted on February 1, 2015.

Under the Land Code, any grant or disposition of a lease, license, easement or permit on Reserve to a non-Shuswap member requires the written consent of Shuswap Chief and Council (s. 30.5). Additionally, no interest in the Reserve can be transferred or assigned (by way of leasehold or otherwise) without the written consent of Council (s. 35.3). Moreover, any document which purports to grant or dispose of such interests without Council consent will be deemed void (s. 30.3).

Furthermore, the Land Code requires that all interests in the Reserve be registered in the First Nation Lands Register, absent which they will not be enforceable (s. 28). As a result, “buckshee leases” (leases which have not followed the appropriate procedures set out in the Land Code and which have not been registered accordingly) are not enforceable and are strongly discouraged by the Shuswap Indian Band.

Finally, we note that pursuant to the Land Code, Shuswap Indian Band has the right to make laws on a variety of land related matters which may impact on the property to be purchased.

Given this, we ask that all potential buyers or sellers of property on Reserve be aware of the Land Code authority. We further ask that you direct all interested in purchasing property on the Reserve to make an appointment with the Shuswap Indian Band Lands Department to discuss these matters at (250) 341-3678 (Ext. #1014), or landclerk@shuswapband.net. I Shall Not Want

There is a story told about a Sunday school teacher who asked her group of children if any of them could quote the entire 23rd psalm. A little four-and-ahalf-year-old girl was among those who raised their hands.

A bit skeptical, the teacher asked if she could really quote the entire psalm. The little girl came to the podium, faced the class, made a little bow, and said: “The Lord is my shepherd, that’s all I want.” She then bowed again and sat down. She may have overlooked a few verses, but I think that little girl captured David’s heart in Psalm 23. The idea throughout the psalm is that we are utterly contented in the shepherd’s care and there is nothing else that we desire.

The opening line of Psalm 23 is one of the most recognizable phrases in all literature. The 23rd Psalm is often used at funerals, and we all are comforted by those words, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters….. Psalm 23 talks about life and death and everything in between, we should take time to read it whenever we need to be reminded that we have a shepherd that wants,

really wants to meet our needs and bring comfort to our heart.

Notice that the Good Shepherd leads us beside still waters. He makes us to lie down in green pastures. Psalms 91 verse 1 NKJ tells us “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

Whenever we are abiding in God, He is able to do a work in our lives. And the 23rd Psalm goes on to tell us that He preparers a feast before us; He anoints our head with the oil of healing and hope. God is able, if we let Him, to bring restoration to us. We have to be willing to abide in His presence. We have to take time to be still before the Lord, spend time in prayer, spend time in His Word, meditating on His Word, to spend time worshiping Him. As we do, God will restore and heal our soul, as it says in Philippians 4:7 KJV “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

A famous actor was once the guest of honour at a social gathering where he received many requests to recite favourite excerpts from various literary works. An old preacher who happened to be there asked the actor to recite the 23rd Psalm. The actor agreed on the condition that the preacher would also recite it. The actor’s recitation was beautifully intoned with great dramatic emphasis for which he received lengthy applause. The preacher’s voice was rough and broken from many years of preaching, and his diction was anything but polished. But when he finished there was not a dry eye in the room. When someone asked the actor what made the difference, he replied “I know the psalm, but he knows the Shepherd.”

As we move toward the summer months, the average temperature is increasing, from 17.1°C to 19.8°C. We had a busy morning, as we also collected vials to send off to a lab to test our water for phosphorous and nitrogen. We also collected these vials on two feeder creeks as well as Dorothy lake due to recent concerns.

If you have been down to Kinsmen beach lately you

may have noticed the drastic colour change to lime green. The District of Invermere is concerned about the colour change and has sent off samples to test for a variety of parameters. We performed our usual water quality tests on Dorothy Lake and will gain more information when the results of the nutrients and metals test come in. Hopefully, these insights onto Dorothy Lake will let us know if it is normal or cause for concern.
