Seasonal Conservation Officer (CO) Matt Hall started work in the Columbia Valley this May. The new face joins CO Greg Kruger and Sgt. Drew Milne to help out for the summer.

Mr. Hall has been working as a conservation officer in the Yukon for the past two years, so he is well-acquainted with grizzly bear callouts. However, he says, dealings with cougars is all new territory and he is looking forward to encountering his first cougar in his time here.

Growing up in the Yukon, Mr. Hall says he “always wanted to do something with wildlife in the outdoors.” When a conservation officer spoke at his high school, it was an obvious career choice.

“I like working with members of the community,” he says of his job.

Expect to see Mr. Hall around the Valley, likely patrolling the lake and rivers, amongst his other duties. The COS does send officers from time to time up to Golden and perhaps as far as Revelstoke, so Mr. Hall will be in and out of the Valley all summer.

“I’m really excited to be here, and become a part of the community,” he sums up.

Ursus & Us event this Saturday

By Leah Scheitel Special to the Pioneer Wildsight Invermere is hosting an event dedicated to bear awareness in the local areas. The event, titles Ursus and Us, is set for Saturday, June 15th and is meant to be an education event for the community.

Mandi McRobbie, branch manager for Invermere Wildsight, said the event is intended to “help raise awareness about the importance of bears in general as well as how to avoid endangering them and ourselves by managing bear attractants and our behaviour.”

This is the third annual year Wildsight has hosted Ursus and Us in the community and is working with other community leaders to help educate the public on proper bear practices. Alongside Wildsight at Cenotaph Park will be WildSafe BC, B.C. conservation officers, the Invermere Public Library and BlackStar Studios. Each partnering party will add their own family-friendly activities, including hands-on lessons on the proper use and storage of bear spray, demonstrations on relocation procedures and an arts table for kids to design their own bear-themed art.

Ms. McRobbie said the event has grown in attendance every year and is hoping for more with a change in location to the downtown Cenotaph Park. According to Ms. McRobbie, the change in venue is to help “increase the visibility and walkability of the event.”

According to WildSafe BC’s website, residential garbage accounts for 60 per cent of calls regarding black bears from 2014 to 2017. Other attractants include pets and pet food, compost and barbecues. Wildsafe BC will be onsite at Ursus and Us to speak about bear attractants and the best way to manage them.

From April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019, local conservation officers responded to roughly 50 calls related to bears. In Invermere, there was 25 calls related to black bears and one for a grizzly bear; there were two calls related to black bears in Windermere; and in Radium there were 19 calls related to black bears and three for grizzly bears. Sergeant Drew Milne from the Columbia-Kootenay Zone Conservation Office said one bear was euthanized in the Fairmont area.

“So looking at the stats from 2018/2019 we can debunk the false beliefs amongst the locals that ‘if they call bear complaints/sightings into the COS the bear will be killed’,” he said.

From transplant to triathlon: Windermere father now keeping up with his kids

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Mark Rievaj was only 10 years old when his father passed away, so when he grew up to have children of his own – Anika (13), Seth (10), Naomi (8) and Meghan (6) – he wondered if they would be fortunate enough to have a father longer than he did.

It was a reasonable concern as he had been living with liver disease for 20 years and feeling his body weaken over time. Little things like playing tag with his kids were challenging since he couldn’t keep up with them.

In the fall of 2017, Mark became so ill that even showering was “an exhausting chore.”

By the time he checked in at the hospital, his heart rate and blood pressure were so low that his nurse thought the machine was broken.

“I completely crashed and organs started failing left and right,” he said.

Mark was in such a dire state that he went from not even being on the waiting list for a liver to sitting at the very top of the national transplant list.

He was airlifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Calgary and later taken by ambulance to Edmonton, Mark and Michelle Rievaj and children Anika, Seth, Naomi and Meghan, at the Wasa triathalon last weekend.

OCP and zoning meeting in the Flats

By Dean Midyette Special to the Pioneer After almost a year of committee work and public consultation, Bylaw 214 pertaining to the Official Community Plan (OCP) and Bylaw 215 dealing with the proposed rezoning of certain parcels of land in conjunction with the new OCP made it to public hearing. Those in attendance at the public hearing, held Tuesday, June 4th, included the Canal Flats council and village staff, planning consultant Jonathan Schmidt of B&A Planning Group and approximately 12 members of the public.

The first member of the public to offer comment was Tracey Flynn, a representative of the Columbia Valley Stewardship Society. Ms. Flynn expressed that overall she was pleased with the OCP and thanked council for being receptive to the ideas expressed by the Society and including them in the document. Ms. Flynn stated on behalf of the Society that they looked forward to future collaboration with the Village.

Canal Flats residents Colleen Woods and Cory Kobza expressed concerns regarding the inclusion of proposed roadways on their properties and were assured

by Chief Administrative Officer Adrian Bergles and planner Jonathan Schmidt that the roadways were noted in the event that the properties were subdivided or developed at a future date and that negotiations around road access would

need to be taken up with the council of the day as part of a subdivision or master plan application.

The council also fielded a question regarding future development of seniors’ housing. Under the new expanded R-1 zoning, a seniors’ housing complex could be constructed within the R-1 zone without a need for a rezoning application.

Concerns were expressed by Kobza family members regarding the rezoning of the golf course lands that their family owns. Bylaw 2015 proposes that the golf course lands be upgraded to an R-1 zoning from a recreational zoning. Both Cory and Anora Kobza stated their concern that they were being told what to do with their private land by the village council and that, in the future, they could be barred by the council of the day from using part or all of their land for recreational purposes. Mr. Bergles and Mr. Schmidt explained that it is usually easier to downgrade zoning than to upgrade it and that if the property remained zoned for recreational use then any portions of the land that the family may wish to develop would have to go through a rezoning process to upgrade it to R-1.

At this point the Kobza family have no concrete plans for how their land will be used.

Third and final readings of Bylaws 214 and 215 were scheduled to be held during the regular council meeting on Monday, June 10th at the municipal office.

Passing on our spare parts when we pass on

I didn’t come straight back to my office after interviewing Mark Rievaj about the new liver that saved his life. Instead I detoured over to Service BC and filled out an organ-donation form.

The whole ordeal – which I regret to say I had been putting off for nearly two years – took roughly two minutes.

I was going to write a message here about how it’s easy to fill out your form and you really should do it. (It is! And you should!)

But that message wouldn’t have worked on me since my best intentions don’t always translate into action.

I’d been meaning to register as a donor ever since I moved to B.C. and found that I’d have to re-register. My intentions were bolstered when I first talked with Mark’s wife, Michelle Rievaj, over a year ago about the miracle their family received.

After the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy, I promised myself I absolutely really would go and fill out my form.

And still I didn’t do it. Why not? Because inertia is easier than action.

I used to work in government communications in Saskatchewan where, instead of only telling people what we wanted them to do, we tried to make it as easy as possible for them to actually do the thing.

In one of my jobs, we didn’t just tell people all the reasons it’s best to use energy-efficient light bulbs but went to hardware stores, put the lights we wanted people to use into their hands – for free – and sent them home to start saving power.

We should likewise make it easier for would-be donors to live up to their good intentions.

Instead of having residents take the initiative to seek out their forms, in Saskatchewan organ donation stickers and consent forms the size of business cards are mailed out along with residents’ health care card renewal stickers.

When I already had my card out to add my renewal sticker, all I had to do to become a donor was put the donor sticker on my card, sign my form, have it witnessed and pop it into my wallet.

Mark said his preference would be for everyone to be automatically added to the donor list unless they choose to opt out. According to research from Stanford, in countries where people have to sign up to donate their organs, fewer than 15 per cent agree to become donors. In countries where people have to expressly opt out of donating, 90 per cent are listed as donors.

As an added incentive, some countries may even give preferential treatment to registered donors, where if a donor and a non-donor both were in need of an organ, the more altruistic person would win the prize.

BC Transplant is not considering an opt-out list but is working on other means to increase donation, including education for health care professionals.

According to a poster at Service BC’s Invermere office, only 675 people in the community have registered there to be organ donors. You can take action to increase

our donation numbers by enabling your friends and co-workers to fill out their forms. When I left the Service BC office, the woman who took my form asked if I wanted to take a few extras. I grabbed a handful and passed them out to help others live up to their ideals too.

Let’s help each other become the kind of people we aspire to be.

We can’t even begin to put into words how incredible owning United Dance has been. The relationships we’ve built, the memories we’ve made, and the skill and love we saw develop in our dancers has meant the world to us. It was one of the hardest decisions we have ever had to make and we will forever cherish what blossomed in this Valley. It has been the experience of a lifetime and for that, no amount of Thank You’s will ever be enough.

Mountain-high honour

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com It was a quiet Friday night at J.A. Laird’s climbing wall, and Herb Weller was, as usual, manning the gym.

A handful of climbers clustered by the wall; Mr. Weller looked on, ready to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it.

But the evening’s usual itinery was waylaid by a flash mob of friends, family, and Rotary club members who surprised Mr. Weller en-masse to present the Rotary Citizen of the Year award.

Rotary member Yvonne Redeker presented the award, noting that the committee very conclusively decided he ought to be honoured as a community citizen as he exemplifies the Rotary motto, which is service beyond self.

“I’m just overwhelmed, and very surprised, and delighted,” said Mr. Weller of the honour. “This was totally out of the blue.”

Perhaps today, Mr. Weller is best known for his work at the climbing wall. He began building the wall in 2002.

By 2013, there was 1,000 square feet of climbing surface on the wall. He opens the wall regularly for public climbing, birthday parties, school groups and more. The object, he said, was to get as many people climbing as possible in a safe and friendly atmosphere. And the plan has worked.

“It’s been 17 years since I started the climbing wall and it’s still getting more popular I think,” he said.

Julie Beauchemin, who was at the wall climbing when the surprise crowd showed up, said she came three years ago and immediately felt welcomed into the community, thanks to the climbing culture fostered by Mr. Weller.

“Thank you for being such a warm and welcoming place at the climbing gym,” she said.

Others spoke of his less well-known contributions to the community. Fellow teacher Grant McDonald said Mr. Weller has volunteered through the years in many other areas including as a starter for the track meet, a leader in the running community, and was there at the very beginnings of the minor soccer foundation.

Mr. Weller is a Teacher on Call and was a full-time teacher prior to that. One of his students piped up that Mr. Weller is his favourite teacher, emitting a collective ‘awww’ from everyone on hand.

Even his wife Colleen Weller piped up to praise her husband. She said when the trees were first planted at J.A. Laird, it was a very dry summer and the sprinklers were not running. Every other day, he would take a bucket and water the trees to keep them growing.

The 2018 Citizen of the Year award is decided by Rotary members, based on nominations from members of the community.

“The nomination goes to somebody that’s committed to the community, involved in a not-necessarily front and centre role, but a quiet and service-oriented role, and Herb certainly fulfils that,” Ms. Redeker said in a follow-up interview. “He’s been donating his time and skills for way longer than I can remember, and is very deserving.”

She said he was one of several very worthy candiates, but Rotary members felt his accolades were well-deserved to be this year’s Citizen of the Year.

Ambushed with honour

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Radium’s Sunrise Rotary Club crashed Mike Gray’s party celebrating his five-year anniversary of owning the Horsethief Creek Pub and Eatery to present him with a special honour.

“We really wanted to make sure that it would be awarded to him in a venue that would be special to him in front of his friends and family, so this is a complete surprise to him. He knows nothing about it,” said Maria Kliavkoff, the club’s assistant district governor, when she invited the Pioneer to sneak a camera into the party.

“He donates to us so effortlessly and is always just a part of everything we do and supportive of everything we do,” she said. “It’s a function of what an incredible volunteer he is and how he’s always more than willing to step up and donate anything he can, whether it’s time, whether it’s his talents, whether it’s his resources.

He’s always ready to step in and step up.”

For instance, she said Mr. Gray, who is a village councillor, offered to use the

Horsethief shuttle to chauffeur not only those attending his pub’s New Year’s Eve event but to make sure guests at Rotary’s party also had a safe ride home.

The Rotary club reserved a table for Horsethief ’s anniversary celebration and tried to contain their gigantic smiles before their president Cris Leonard borrowed the mic and asked for Mr. Gray’s attention.

Paul Harris awards are “granted to Rotarians that do exemplary things or business people or community members that do exemplary things that stand up for our motto which is ‘service before self,’” Mr. Leonard said, inviting the delighted Mr. Gray to the stage to receive the honour.

“Mike’s done great for a business, but he’s done better for the community,” Mr. Leonard said.

Accepting the award, Mr. Gray said: “I don’t have a speech prepared because you didn’t give me a warning that it was happening, but Rotary does a tremendous amount for our community as well, and it’s an absolute honour to be recognized by this.”

This is the second year Columbia Valley Pride has hosted the Pride in the Park event, and they have relocated the event to accommodate for more people.

“This year, to ensure it was more accessible to everyone, we decided to apply to use one of the District of Invermere’s parks,” said Columbia Valley Pride founder Tara Woods. “There will be a barbecue, vendors, live entertainment, activities for all ages, and a silent auction.”

Accompanying Pride in the Park are two other events to help make it a full weekend of festivities.

“On Friday, June 14th, our friends at ULLR are hosting a Gay Pride Fashion Show, featuring outfits from Fire Vixen Emporium, Her Public, and other local businesses.

The fashion show will be emceed by April Storm and Chi Chi, two of our favourite drag queens,” said Ms. Woods, adding that a dance party will follow the performances. The event, which starts at 9 p.m., has no cover charge, but is a 19 and older party.

The evening following Pride in the Park will feature a drag performance at the Horsethief Pub and Eatery. Drag performers April Storm and Chi Chi will be joined

by Felicia Bones and Sierra Vanity for a memorable performance to close out the weekend’s festivities. According to Ms. Woods, the drag shows at the Horsethief are “always incredible and sell out early.” This is the only event of the weekend that requires tickets in advance, which can be found at Horsethiefpub.ca/events.

Ms. Woods credits working with a team of six core members to pulling off a pride event in the Valley, each of whom, she says, are “all integral to making the magic happen.” She also recognized the other organizations in the Columbia Valley that work as support and resources for LGBTQ2IA+ people, especially the local youth.

“The Columbia Valley Youth Network has been great for connecting youth to resources and has partnered with us before and will be generously volunteering their time on Saturday to run activities for youth,” she said. Woods also mentioned the resources at the OPT Clinic for Sexual Health and Bradford & Bradford Counselling for their support of the LQBTQ2IA+ community.

Columba Valley Pride has also partnered with ULLR Bar to host Queer Magical Bingo on the last Wednesday of every month, to celebrate a little bit of pride all year long.

Columbia Valley Food and Farm, a newly-formed non-profit local food organization that combines the former food organizations, is pleased to partner with the Windermere District Historical Society on Saturday, June 15th for the annual tea on the museum grounds.

Over the past 13 years, you may have enjoyed events and benefitted from the hard work of the team at Slow Food Columbia Valley to support our local producers and culinary traditions. We will continue the work to help build a better food system in the Columbia Valley. As always, we believe in acting locally, while thinking globally.

Stay tuned for upcoming events and projects such as The Columbia Food and Farm Guide, and come out to the Museum for a delicious Strawberry Social.

We’ll be serving B.C. strawberries, sponge cake and sweet cream. The Social will be part of of the Society’s Summer Opening Tea. The summer theme at the museum is “Capturing History Through the Camera Lens,” with a display of many devices which made use of photographic film.

There is an Edison Projecting Kinetoscope (18971900), a finely made 4by5 inch folding field camera, a microfilm camera and reader and a number of cameras and projectors for both still and moving photos.

There will be accordion music by Franz Grasegger.

Grab your reusable bags and bike down to the Invermere Farmers & Artists Market, starting for the season this Saturday, June 15.

The market is moving an “apricot” stone’s throw away this year, from 6th Avenue to the parking lot at the end of 6 (the arena parking lot). It ruffled a few feathers when the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 71 (which operates the market), in consultation with market vendors, negotiated the move with the District of Invermere. However, reported the Legion, most vendors voted for the move and ultimately decided to go ahead for this year.

The new market configuration makes room for a kids corner, dozens of vendor booths, and even a stage for weekend entertainment. Expect to see products ranging from intricately-detailed watches, jewelry and metalworks, to tables heaving with fresh produce, organic meat, and delectable treats.

The markets run Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The pen is mightier than the board

The Rite to Ride Foundation is launching a new fundraising tool. The ‘Write to Ride’ initiative will have the kids in the program writing their very own newsletter.

For a fee, you can access a regularly-scheduled newsletter featuring short stories, poems, a skateboarding lingo dictionary, profiles of the kids, coaches, sponsors, and more. The fundraiser, and the foundation itself, is the brainchild of Devin Publikover.

Mr. Publikover says this new initiative will allow the kids to hone their writing skills while helping contribute to the organization. The kids are “pretty excited” about the newsletter, he said.

So far, Rite to Ride has been running well, though the founder admits it has been a mountain of work to get to this point for the fledgling foundation.

Rite to Ride is a new not-for-profit launched by Mr. Publikover earlier this year. The goals of the Rite to Ride Foundation are to provide a safe environment for children to participate and excel in snowboarding, skateboarding and community involvement, to give them opportunities to learn skills in leadership, community outreach, and fundraising, to provide assistance to snowboarders and skateboarders in the organization with equipment to aid in skill progression, and to provide children with outstanding teachers, instructors, coaches and friends.

“My goal is not to make the next Olympic level skateboarder or snowboarder. My goal is to make them a well-rounded individual where they can choose whatever path they decide to take, as long as it’s with a smile on their face and general wellbeing of those around them in hand,” Mr. Publikover said.

Rite to Ride has been focused on a pilot group of children so far, though there is opportunity for other kids to join in at the skatepark. As he explained on the group’s Facebook page recently: “We have been meeting up on Saturdays, and we generally spend half of the time in the skatepark, and half in the community. Any and all are welcome to attend and join @ the skatepark, however only the “Pilot group” can partake in the community aspect, and the main reason being, there is only one coach right now on Saturdays and 8 children out on the streets is a handful, albeit a wonderful handful haha. Once school concludes, our July and August format will be much more abundant!”

Mr. Publikover has plans to open up the program to other kids for a summer camp. The newsletter will be $5 for a digital copy, $10 for a hard copy, with the first newsletter set to launch at the end of June. This Saturday, June 15th, the Artym Gallery will display the works of two Canadian landscape powerhouses: Cameron Bird and David Langevin. With Cameron Bird in attendance from 10-3 p.m, this will be an exhibition you won’t want to miss. What a perfect pairing of artists to kick off the summer months of hiking and outdoor activities!

Cameron Bird is Duncan-born but has lived all over British Columbia. He loves to hike, camp and explore the mountains, which is how many of his paintings come to fruition. Now nestled in the central interior of B.C., it comes as no surprise that Mr. Bird creates such beautiful works of both wildlife and landscapes. He will be treating us to a well-rounded show featuring popular locations, such as Three Sisters, Moraine Lake, as well as some lesser known locations, and big-game wildlife.

The scenery will be sure to inspire anyone to get out there this summer and explore.

Mr. Bird is known for his fantastic bold brushwork and lots of brilliant colour. He studied for over a decade with Canadian artist Keith C. Smith, who encouraged him to cleverly simplify his paintings by making each brushstroke count. Mr. Bird has been hard at work preparing for this show. Experimenting with new techniques, taking chances, but also taking extra care with each piece - creating works of quality and refinement. Saturday will be a fantastic opportunity for admirers of his work to meet Cameron in person and enjoy a conversation about his art.

Fresh works from David Langevin

Low ceiling at Moraine, by Cameron Bird will surely impress this weekend. Mr. Langevin has been painting since 1994, and is located in Kamloops. Living out west has provided endless inspiration and opportunity for Mr. Langevin. His paintings boast layers upon layers of beautiful colour applied with stunning technical precision. Mr. Langevin’s latest works include gorgeous scenery from the Rocky Mountains featuring waterfalls and wellknown destinations such as Lake O’Hara. His classic solitary tree portraits have quickly gained popularity, which comes as no surprise due to his careful application.

He is not afraid to get his hands dirty in the process of creating art. He uses many layers of transparent or translucent paint in order to create a layered and textured effect. Stop by on Saturday to experience the unique luminosity present in all of his works.

The Cameron Bird & David Langevin exhibition begins on Saturday, June 15th, 10-5:30 p.m., with Cameron Bird in attendance from 10-3 p.m. The exhibition continues until June 21st. All works can be viewed online at ArtymGallery.com.

Submitted by Effusion Art Gallery For the first time in two years, artist Kimberly Kiel will be making her way to Invermere from her studio in Balgonie Saskatchewan for the opening of her new show “Outside the Lines” on Saturday June 15th at Effusion Art Gallery + Cast Glass Studio.

“I’m so excited to be heading back to Invermere!

I love the glorious diorama that greets you everywhere you look and the town’s chilled-out vibe,” Ms. Kiel muses. “Most of my time is spent solo up in my studio, so it is wonderful to get to visit with people, share in the interest and delight of art, and speak about my new collection.”

Featuring 30 brand-new oil paintings in her signature colourful, fluid style, including landscapes, florals, parties, mixed media, and summer activity scenes, Outside the Lines is her largest collection yet.

“My general inspiration is drawn from an inherent curiosity about the actual process of applying paint to canvas and creating a tangible, interesting surface.

Some of my inspiration for this show was drawn from the mountains and lakes of the area. My process of painting has evolved to a more diverse surface. Similarly, the themes I revisit have expanded and changed over time. I love being truly immersed in the moment while painting.”

Ms. Kiel took the unlikely leap from her busy financial planning practice in Calgary after taking a painting class. The class unleashed her passion, and her successful career as a professional artist soon followed.

She encourages everyone interested in art to take the plunge and “Get out of your own way and embrace the happy accidents that occur while creating!”

Ms. Kiel will be at the opening of Outside the Lines at Effusion on Saturday June 15th from 11-2 p.m., giving everyone the opportunity to meet her and learn more about her process. Duo presents cross-genre music Submitted Singers Laura Landsberg and Allison Girvan have been waiting for an opportunity to collaborate again for some time now. Ms. Landsberg says the title of their upcoming concert, “Feels Like Home,” is a reflection on how it feels to join forces once more after so long.

“That magic moment when two singers dive into a unison part and suddenly they are so truly one – that’s the moment I fell in love with our voices together. People have said that we are heaven and earth, Like the two sides of a coin, we come from very different backgrounds but our hearts are in the same place and that’s why it feels like home.”

Both singers defy any easy pigeonhole. With Ms. Landsberg’s foundation in jazz music and Ms. Girvan’s in classical, both singers frequently cross genres to explore the music they love.

“With such a wealth of musical flavours on of-

fer, it is hard to imagine limiting yourself to only a few,” says Ms. Girvan. She cites listening skills as key to navigating different styles. “We are both attentive to changes in the voice needed to characterize different styles while at the same time aware of not losing our own sound. This is also what is so exciting about singing together – Laura and I have very different voices but listen to each other in a way that maximizes the many similarities.”

The duo will be performing at Christ Church Trinity this Saturday, June 15th. Tickets are $20, $15 for students, and are available at Pynelogs Cultural Centre or at the door. The concert is at 7:30 p.m.; doors open at 7 p.m.

The two Nelson-based singers will be joined on stage by two family members: guitarist Paul Landsberg and violinist Don Macdonald, as well as Dylan Ferris on mandolin and Rob Fahie on bass for an evening of progressive folk, bluegrass and world music.

Send your kids to college this summer Submitted by College of the Rockies This summer, kids aged 6 to 12 will have the opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills, and have tons of fun, thanks to College of the Rockies’ Kids Campus.

Held at the College’s Invermere campus, Kids Campus will be jam-packed with indoor and outdoor activities inspired by nature including arts and crafts, scavenger hunts, outdoor games, gardening, obstacle courses, geocaching, sports, and short hikes.

“We’re happy to be able to respond to community need by hosting Kids Campus this summer,” said Invermere campus manager Michelle Taylor. “Through a survey conducted earlier this year, we heard that affordable summer activities for kids was a priority, especially for those that provide a diverse range of activities, and which can provide flexibility for attendance.”

Of the 91 survey respondents, an overwhelming 98 per cent were looking for summer camp activities for their children, with 70 per cent of those wanting their kids to have some structure and activities during the summer months.

Kids Campus will run for three separate weeks in July and August. July camps take place Monday to Friday, July 8-12th, and again July 22-26th for a cost of $225 per week. The final Kids Campus will take place Tuesday to Friday, August 6-9th for $180.

Drop-in spots at $55 per day are subject to availability.

“We’re fortunate that our campus is in close walking distance to a large track with a field, sports courts, outdoor exercise equipment, the beach, hiking, and more,” Ms. Taylor added. “There will be no lack of activities for the kids to take part in.”

Kids Campus participants should dress for the weather, and bring items like sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and a lunch with them each day.

Get creative at BlackStar

By Leah Scheitel Special to the Pioneer “Get creative, get inspired and get in here.” The motto for BlackStar Studios, an art gallery and workshop in downtown Invermere, is to the point. Its owners want the community to create art and they want to help.

The studio offers daily workshops to the public, featuring five workshops per day, in a variety of art forms.

“It’s a mix - painting, paper mache - we do lots of sculpting and clay workshops,” said Cajsa Fredin, one of the founders of the studio. “We have five of them running a day and they are an hour long and we have them like that so that people can kind of have the choice of which one they want to come to that day.” Ms. Fredin said they have a variety of amateur artists come in, including prebooked returnees and casual walk-ins. The workshops are open from people ages five to 99.

BlackStar Studios was the brainchild of Ms. Fredin, Natalie Ruby and Jen Arba, all of whom have a long history with art and creative endeavours. Ms. Ruby is a trained glassblower, creating jewellery and lamp works. Ms. Arba has been sewing for most of her life, designing her own patterns and bags, and Fredin received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Calgary, specializing in welding and continuing a sculpture studio practice, Matsdonner Metals. This year, the studio is celebrating its 10th anniversary and offered paint nights in early June to say thank you to the community. On Sunday, June 9th, they offered a free kids workshop and hosted a sold-out paint night on Monday, June 10th for adults.

studio space and workshop area with a little gallery,” said Ms. Fredin. “We did have studios which was our first incarnation and then it has evolved and changed over the years as there are certain needs that we have wanted to meet in the community.”

The studio space features the work of 70 artists, with pieces of art rotating through the gallery.

“We only feature handmade Canadian artists, with a focus on emerging art because it’s hard to get into galleries when you’re an emerging artist,” said Ms. Fredin. “We don’t really do shows per se but we do have a rotation of awesome art in here. It keeps it fresh and happy and young and fun.”

Ms. Fredin emphasized their relationship with the community as being pinnacle to their business.

“We get asked by a lot of organizations in the community to help them do stuff, which is a lot of fun and we really love it.”

Along with the local Chamber of Commerce, they also work with breweries and distilleries, help with events organized by local education groups, such as Wildsight, and work extensively with the local schools during the school year.

“We are really involved with our community here, we get a lot of support from them so it’s pretty fun to have that kind of connection with everyone here,” Ms. Fredin said.

Edward Richard Martin Chrona passed away at Jubilee Home, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan on June 5, 2019 at the age of 80 years.

Edward is lovingly remembered by: his daughter Wendalyn Morris-Chrona (Charles Lane), his son Darcy (Patricia) Chrona and his daughter, Sarita Chrona (Louis Dubois); his grandchildren, Rheanna (Jeff) Richert and their son Stylez; Trent (Jennifer) Morris and their children Teagan, Izabelle and Emmitt; Sean St. Germain and his children Hunter and Autumn; Erik St. Germain (Candace Gauthier) and their children, Teagan and Asher; Selena Dubois; Amanda Chrona; Stephen Chrona; Zeph Chrona; his sister Thelma Feriencek.

Edward was predeceased by: his parents Henning and Naomi Chrona; his sister Lorraine Hopkins; his brothers Arthur Chrona and Eric Chrona.

A Memorial Service for Edward will be held at a later date in Chilliwack, British Columbia.

Donations in memory of Edward may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer’s Society.

S OBITUARY S HYNES Louis Alfred

January 18, 1931 May 30, 2019 It is with great sadness that we are saying good-bye to Louis Alfred Hynes at the age of 88 years.

Louis was born in Wokingham, County of Berkshire, England and arrived in Quebec by ship on August 26, 1932.

He is predeceased by his parents and his first wife, Jennie, in 1989 and later, his second wife, Beverly, in 2011. Louis will be greatly missed by his sister, Marie McCormick, nephew Rodney Wolfe (Johanne), nieces Sandra Pettipas (Glen), Colleen McCormick and Diane Schmidt. His great-nieces Mallory, Denise, Lisa, Ivy and great-nephews, Nicholas and Micheal. Louis is related to the Hynes family of Harrogate, British Columba.

Louis loved being outside, working in his huge garden; he was well known for growing his huge, juicy red tomatoes, of all kinds. He also loved fishing and hunting with his buddies from Kamloops. Louis was a great cook and loved to prepare all kinds of wonderful meals.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Kamloops, British Columba.

Big CHEERS to the Village of Canal Flats staff and counsel for spending thousands of tax dollars on the “Economic Development Plan!” We especially like the “Gateway Plan” to the south entrance to the Village. It’s too bad you’re not actually serious about implementing your “plan.”

Multiple “Sea Cans” used as “opaque screening?” The huge, tin, Quonset type building goes beautifully with “The Plan” as well we see. A bus. an RV, and the most bizarre landscaping we’ve ever laid eyes on...Way to go! You should be proud!!

Every driver gave me a nice wide comfortable berth while I was doing “my thing” (cycling).

Like all good habits, good financial habits should be developed from an early age to ensure success. Here are a few things to bear in mind when teaching children about saving money.

Saving to spend In today’s high debt environment, saving to spend is a lesson most people could learn. It’s also an important one for children, as it can help them learn planning skills, even if they just receive an allowance. If they have a job, saving to spend is a great way to work towards a goal, as well as learn the pride of earning their own money and buying something all their own.

Care must be taken, however, to ensure children don’t get the impression that people only save money to buy things later. How many adults can admit they do this too? Introducing an aspect of saving to save can help put spending, and saving to spend, into perspective.

Saving to save One of the most significant financial lessons anyone can learn is to save for the sake of saving. It’s not the easiest or most fun thing to do, but it’s vital for financial success.

What this means at its core is to consistently put money aside for one’s retirement. Not to buy a first home, or pay for a wedding or take a vacation, but for the time in one’s life when they are no longer earning income. The concept is simple: while one is working, they should tuck away a little for when they transition out of the work force.

Defined-benefit pension plans used to do this for people. Money disappeared off people’s paychecks, and it went relatively unnoticed. Nowa-

days pension plans are leaner, or completely absent.

This makes long-term savings even more imperative.

How to do it The easiest way to build up a nest egg is to observe the basic principal touted in popular books like The Wealthy Barber and The Richest Man in Babylon. There are two steps: Save 10 per cent of every paycheck for retirement. The funds can be used to make RRSP or TFSA contributions.

The second step is perhaps even more important: plan life around the money that remains. That means avoiding overspending and consumer debt. As the old saying goes, it’s not how much money you make, but how much you keep. It doesn’t matter if a person makes a million dollars a year if they chronically spend two million.

The benefit Aside from the benefit of making responsible choices, parents can expect that if their children save 10 per cent of their income, it is overwhelmingly likely that they will be able to retire at a comfortable age.

This concept is not just for those who attend university. For example, a person who enters the work force at age 20 earning $50,000 annually, or $39,000 after deductions, could retire at age 57 and with the same income as when they were working, until age 85. Along with the Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security, as well as a historically feasible 6 per cent annual rate of return, this is possible with saving only 10 per cent of one’s income.

Final thoughts Many parents worry about how responsible their children will grow up to be, with money and in other aspects of life. Raising a spendthrift isn’t ideal, but neither is raising a miser. The best answer lies in the middle. After all, isn’t moderation the key to success in most aspects of life?

Children who learn and apply good financial habits from an early age will likely have more freedom, time and energy as adults to live their best lives. Isn’t that what all parents want?

Rod and Gun Club offers friendly weekend competions during 100th anniversary year Reel in some family fishing fun

Get out your rods and the bucket of worms: the Lake Windermere District Rod and Gun Club (LWDRGC) is hosting the Family Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 15th. Lake Lillian, located just east of Invermere, will be home to the event, which is the first of its kind hosted by the LWDRGC but is a part of a larger province-wide celebration.

“The Family Fishing Event is part of the B.C. provincial Family Fishing Weekend.

B.C.’s Family Fishing Weekend is an annual opportunity for friends and families to get out and experience fishing, learn new things and have fun,” said Gerald Forsyth, a director on the LWDRGC. “On this day, all B.C. residents are encouraged to try the sport of fishing without purchasing a freshwater fishing licence.”

Forsyth said the main goal of the event is three-fold: to introduce families and youth to the sport of fishing; to develop a healthy respect for the environment; and to celebrate B.C.’s outdoors and “the enjoyment of family fishing experiences and being in touch with our natural environment.”

The Family Fishing Society of B.C. was created in 2001 and they hope to continue creating awareness about fishing in the province. The Family Fishing Derby is traditionally hosted on Father’s Day Weekend to help foster family experiences.

“We are excited to see the growth of these events and how they have evolved into a fundamental family tradition in many communities,” said Cam Aronetz, Family Fishing Society President in a press release. “We would love to see fishing with Dad on Father’s Day become the equivalent of Mother’s Day brunch with Mom.” Locally, Forsyth said the LWDRGC is co-hosting the event with the B.C. Conservation Officer Service. to help make their first Family Fishing Derby a success. There will also be a free barbecue lunch for the participants and many members of the LWDRGC will be on site to help provide tips and tricks. WildSafeBC, Aquatic Invasive Species and a wildfire suppression crew will also be participating, providing information on their area of expertise.

And for what kind of fish to expect? “Lake Lillian is well-known for rainbow trout fishing; the Province regularly stocks the lake with rainbow trout,” said Forsyth.

The event is free for participants and there is no fishing licence required to participate. It is set for Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Lake Lillian Recreation Site. More information can be found at Bcfamilyfishing.com.

Matriarchs on the march for African grandmothers

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com The local matriarchs of the Valley GoGo Sisters are walking together to support African grandmothers in caring for their grandchildren.

Affiliated with the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmother’s Campaign, the local group began in 2006 to help African grandmothers who lost their children to HIV and AIDs and were left raising large families of orphaned grandchildren.

Luana Gillies, the treasurer with the Valley GoGo Sisters and a grandmother of six, said: “Africa has lost that middle generation of parents to AIDs, and grandmothers have stepped in to look after orphans... I can’t imagine at my age having a household of even up to 10 to 15 grandchildren.”

The Valley GoGo Sisters has raised $110,000 in the 13 years since the group started up, she said, and the national campaign has collected nearly $25 million.

Those funds are distributed according to what the African grandmothers themselves say they need. Rather than having foreigners develop programs, the grandmothers organize themselves and apply for support for everything from “feeding kids and getting them to school” to counselling support, medical care, after-school programs and income-generating programs so the grandmothers can provide for their families.

Ms. Gillies said she is sometimes asked why the group is passionate about helping people who are so far away.

Her response is that their hearts are big enough to care for both those here at home and those around the world.

“It’s not an either/or sort of thing,” she said. “I feel

As a grandmother, she said “it’s easy to feel compassionate” for those distant matriarchs doing their best to raise their darlings.

“The love between grandmothers and grandchildren isn’t any different there than here,” she said, adding that she is awed by these grandmothers who are an ocean away.

“They have strengthened their communities because they have shown that kind of courage and resilience to look around and see what’s needed and just to tackle the issues,” she said. “They’re not little grandmas sitting at home waiting for somebody to look after them, that’s for sure. They’re really powerful women.”

where keen explorers might discover a bone or even a flint arrowhead buried in the sand.

Two elders will share their expertise and ancient cultural practices by offering lessons on making pine-needle baskets and willow dreamcatchers.

Throughout the day, there will also be powwow demonstrations, face painting, food and craft vendors, a concession and more.

“It’s a gathering place. We’re there to come together as one, and we’re open to sharing,” said Ms. Thomas.

“We are open, and there are no wrong questions. Questions are always welcome.”

She is excited to host the event and share the day with everyone who attends. She said she is looking forward to seeing Indigenous people celebrating their heritage and taking pride in their culture, while teaching the Valley more about the people who thrived in the area long before the settlers arrived.

The National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4878 Kinbasket Trail in the field next to No Frills. It will go on rain or shine.

“Come on out whether it be for five minutes or the whole time,” Ms. Thomas said, adding that guests can expect great energy and loads of fun.

Celebrate the season of Pentecost

By Laura Hermakin Reverend Christ Church Trinity This week we celebrate Pentecost Sunday and enter the longest liturgical period of the church year. It is so good that Pentecost is celebrated for such a long time, essentially carrying us through summer and fall seasons, because Pentecost is to be experienced with all the joy and anticipation one can imagine as we celebrate the God-presence fully alive within each soul. Scripture tells us, “When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.” (Acts 2:1-4) Can you image the party? They were not celebrating a milestone or honouring an accomplishment, but a group of folks were transformed from the inside of their beings by the Holy presence and energy of God. They were given new languages and sparked with Divine fire and all who were present were transformed. The Holy Spirit of God filled each heart and joy overflowed with such great enthusiasm that folks couldn’t help but speak of the miracle and mystery of God’s life-giving empowerment.

If ever there was a line of poetry that captures the energy and power of Pentecost Sunday, it is this line from Gerard Manley Hopkins poem’s, “God’s Grandeur”: ‘the world is charged with the splendour of God’. Jesus’ resurrection reaches its high point with an outpouring of life, light and energy for his followers. After Jesus’ crucifixion the group of men and women who followed him in faith was hiding. They were afraid and had lost all heart and hope. But through the gift of the Holy Spirit they are filled with courage, enthusiasm and determination. Given new life and hope, they went out into the streets and market places and proclaimed the joy and passion of their faith in the splendour of God. May we each feel the fire of Pentecost and allow the streams of living water to fill us with great surprise and incarnation of joy as we are filled with the presence of God through the life-giving spirit. Let’s celebrate!

Bylaw No. 2907 cited as “Regional District of East Kootenay – Upper Columbia Valley Zoning Bylaw No. 900, 1992 – Amendment Bylaw No. 348, 2019 (Windermere North / Bad Toro Properties Ltd)” will: 1) amend the zoning designation of three properties along Athalmer Road from R-1, Single Family Residential Zone to C-2, Service Commercial Zone.
