Remembering D-Day

t’s been 75 years since Canadian troops were among those who stormed the beaches of Normandy. This operation still remains the largest military operation by sea in history, and is certainly one of the most famous. We can honour our veterans by living as proud Canadians, emulating the philosophy of collaboration in achieving our goals. We can never repay these brave men and women for all they have given to us, but we can remember that there are times to pull together for the greater good.

Gearing up for fun at MMES The bike rodeo at Martin Morigeau Elementary School in Canal Flats, held Wednesday, May 29th, taught students how to safely ride, tune up their bikes, and have fun while riding around the village and at the bike park. BC gives $1 million boost to Westside Legacy Trail

By Pioneer staff The Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance received $1 million from the provincial BikeBC program for the Markin-MacPhail Westside Legacy Trail.

Greenways made the announcement with an email blast.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of the B.C. government for the trail,” said Bob Shaunessy, Chair of the Fundraising Committee, in the release.

Added Lyle Wilson, chair of the Greenways Trail Alliance: “This new support from the provincial government makes a significant difference in our ability to connect our communities this summer and we are tremendously grateful. Along with over a thousand donors, we have raised $7.1 million towards the completion of the Trail

and I want to acknowledge the impact we can have by all working together.”

BikeBC grants provide communities with financial support to create new cycling infrastructure and make improvements to existing transportation networks – making local transportation safer, greener and more accessible. These projects promote cycling to work, school and errands, which helps reduce traffic congestion while contributing to a cleaner, healthier environment. These projects have the potential to generate tourism-related benefits based on their proximity to amenities and points of interest.

Mr. Shaunessy said the provincial investment of $2 million total is a “significant portion” of the more-than $8 million cost to complete the trail.

Rescuer died after saving two girls

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Jon Palmiere – “a terrific, terrific guy” – gave his life to save two young girls at Windermere beach on Friday, May 31st.

Eyewitnesses said Jon had gone after a floaty, but Kiel Jordan reached out to the Pioneer to clarify what happened.

“He wasn’t going after the floaty. He was saving my little 10-year-old daughter, (Peyton),” he said.

According to a news release from the RCMP, Jon helped two young children, pushing them both back to shore.

Jon and his girlfriend – Mr. Jordan’s older step-daughter – were visiting from Calgary for the weekend and enjoying a beach day with Mr. Jordan’s younger girls and another family when Peyton and the other unidentified girl ran into trouble.

“My daughter got a little too far out on the water on her floaty and was trying to make it back and she started calling for help, needing some help, and then her head started bobbing underneath the water. And so Jon, without hesitation, ran into the lake and tried to help her get back. He wasn’t a strong swimmer at all, but he just went for it,” Mr. Jordan said.

“His head started going under trying to keep her up and then he slipped under the water and his last go was to grab her feet, somehow threw her up out of the water towards the beach, which got her with-

Others rushed to save Jon, brought him back to shore on a paddle board, gave him chest compressions and called for help.

But it was too late, and Jon passed away in the hospital.

“He’s just the most kind and caring

person in the world and anybody that came into contact with him absolutely loved him. You couldn’t make a nicer human, it was just who he was,” Mr. Jordan said.

Peyton was returned safely to shore and is in counselling to help process what she witnessed.

“Physically she’s fine. He kept her above. She bobbed a few times before he

got there, but he kept her above,” Mr. Jordan said.

Jon’s last act of kindness was well within the generous young-man’s character, Mr. Jordan said.

“My step-daughter has a brand-new baby, and he (Jon) just steps up and mans up and helps out even though the child isn’t his. He’s just that human, he’s always the guy that’s going to help you.”

Funding announced for First Nations housing

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Akisq’nuk First Nation and Shuswap Indian Band will be getting over a million dollars in new and improved housing following a funding announcement from the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) on Thursday, May 30th.

Akisq’nuk First Nation is receiving $889,000 to build 29 new units and improve four existing ones, while Shuswap Indian Band is getting $200,000 in funding for four new units and to restore five additional homes.

The CBT’s Mark Brunton, Senior Manager, Delivery of Benefits, said the organization went to each community to talk about their needs and to discuss the projects they would like to see. Then the CBT divvied up $2.9 million between First Nations in the Columbia Basin.

“We are very excited about this program in general. We think housing is essential for healthy and resilient communities, and the Trust has identified working with First Nations and affordable housing both as strategic priorities for us,” he said.

Donald Sam, Akisq’nuk chair of the housing committee, advocates for investing in homes as one of the first steps to enhancing his community.

“We can’t be looking at learning language and culture when we can’t even put a roof over our heads,” Mr. Sam said in March 2019 when the first of a series of housing projects opened after roughly 25 years.

Following Thursday’s announcement, many more of the Valley’s First Nations residents will have a new or improved place to call home.

The Pioneer could not reach Akisq’nuk and Shuswap representatives for their comments prior to press time.

• On Monday, May 27th, two mountain bikes were reported stolen from Panorama Resort sometime between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on May 26th. The stolen bikes were described as a red 2011 Norco DH and a black 2014 Specialized Enduro.

• On Tuesday, May 28th at 9:20 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a single vehicle collision on Highway 93/95 north of Canal Flats. The driver and lone occupant of a grey Hyundai Santa Fe was southbound when she went off the road and down an embankment. The driver sustained minor injuries. Alcohol was not a factor in this incident.

• On Saturday, June 1st at 6:30 p.m., police responded to a report of an assault at a residence in Canal Flats. A female reported being assaulted by a male relative. The male was arrested at the scene for assault and transported to cells.

• On Sunday, June 2nd at 12:30 a.m., a resident of Terra Vista Road in Windermere reported a black Chevrolet Silverado had driven through a gate at the complex. Police located the suspect vehicle in the vicinity with a number of people standing around. Officers identified and spoke to the driver who admitted to consuming alcohol and damaging the gate.

The driver was arrested for mischief and also issued a 24 hour driving prohibition after failing a roadside breath test. The mischief investigation is ongoing.

• On Sunday, June 2nd at 9:45 p.m., police received a report of a male causing problems at a residence on 8th Avenue in Invermere. A resident in the house told police the male was intoxicated and causing property damage to the house. Police attended and arrested a 20-year-old male for mischief and held him in custody until sober.

Greening up the future

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Invermere resident Jessie Johnson wants to gather like-minded people, young and old, together to discuss climate change and implications of our plastic use and impacts on the environment.

“The idea of the whole thing is people get to sit and discuss what they want from the Canadian government, whichever party happens to come into power,” said Ms. Johnson.

She is hosting a ‘Pact for a Green New Deal’ event, an initiative gaining momentum across Canada with more than 60 organizations pushing to make climate action a priority in the next federal election.

“The Pact for a Green New Deal is a growing movement of people across Canada who understand that governments are not doing enough to solve the

climate crisis – and we hope you will be a part of it,” reads their website.

Ms. Johnson said the deal rests on two principles: it must meet the demands of Indigenous knowledge and science, and cut Canada’s emissions at least in half in 11 years while protecting cultural and biological diversity; and, it must leave no one behind and build a better present and future for all of us.

Ms. Johnson has invited District of Invermere Mayor Al Miller to the event to talk about what the district is doing or hoping to do to reduce our community’s footprint, such as composting initiatives or plastic bag bans.

The meeting will be held Sunday, June 9th at 7 p.m. at the Lions Club hall. Ms. Johnson invites everyone to come out for the presentation and discussion. For more information, go to http://act.greennewdealcanada.ca/town-halls/invermere/

Biking for brains The Branch Out Bike Tour is returning to the Valley from June 14th to 16th.

The tour starts at Panorama Mountain Resort, with the 80-kilometre ride finishing in Invermere and the 100-kilometre and 160-kilometre events ending at Panorama.

The bike tour begins June 15 at 8 a.m. There is a $300 fundraising minimum.

Last year the event raised over $400,000 for research into nervous-system diseases, which include multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.

Business borders, sunny eaves and a wearied weir at DOI council

“It’s so close to the (downtown) border,” said Mayor Al Miller. “We’ll see what our citizens say.”

Business on the border Invermere Residents will get to weigh in on whether a building near the downtown – 218 7th Avenue – should be zoned for a commercial operation.

Treasures in the Wind had obtained a business license and was briefly in operation in the building before an anonymous complaint from a downtown business owner sent them packing.

Staff recommended denying the commercial application because the change would go against the Official Community Plan, which aims to keep downtown and Athalmer as the District’s main locations to do business.

Even so, during the last District of Invermere Council meeting of Tuesday, May 28th, council opted to carry the proposal forward for a public hearing at a date which remains to be determined.

Sunny eaves Also going forward for public feedback is a request to allow for extra-long eaves at 703-13th Avenue to catch more sun to help power a passive home.

What to do with weathered weir Councillor Ute Juras raised a concern with the old weir in Windermere Lake near the Athalmer bridge after hearing that visitors had come close to hitting it.

She proposed asking Transport Canada for signage to warn boaters about the hazard.

In the longer term, Mayor Miller is intrigued by the possibility of improving the weir. He said he’s heard from a few people who would like to see the weir turned into an attraction like a dock or a walkway.

“It would certainly add to the whole waterfront project,” he said.

Pavilions, presentations and senior projects at Canal Flats council

By Dean Midyette Special to the Pioneer A regular meeting of the Canal Flats council convened on Monday, May 27th. The following items were discussed: Councillor Douglas McCutcheon reported that grants are available for senior-focused projects across Canada. Councillor McCutcheon has reached out to local seniors in Canal Flats, reporting that the unanimous issue that concerns seniors is housing. While there are currently no projects proposed, he has asked that council prioritize project proposals that may arise in the future.

A proposal for a 30’ x 60’ pavilion has been brought to council by the Canal Flats Community Society. The pavilion would be located at the southwest corner of the baseball diamond, between the diamond and the arena. The council is supporting a grant application by the Village of Canal Flats to the Columbia Basin Trust Community Outdoor Revitalization Program for a 75 per cent matching grant, which means that the Village and stakeholders must provide 25 per cent of the funding for the project. Paul Marcil has been appointed by the soci-

ety to work with Village staff to finalize the design and grant application. Mr. Marcil indicated that the Society has approximately $50,000 in funds to support the pavilion project. Mayor Karl Sturzer called the pavilion a “great legacy project for the village” and has already had preliminary conversations with stakeholders and supporters. Up to $500,000 in capital funding can be applied for through this CBT initiative.

A report on Climate Action in the Columbia Valley was received for information. The full report can be viewed on the Village of Canal Flats website.

It was announced that Pat Morrow would be making a presentation to Martin Morigeau Elementary School students on Tuesday, June 4th. Mr Morrow is a world-renowned mountaineer, environmentalist and photographer who has scaled the tallest peaks on all seven continents.

Two public hearings were also scheduled for Tuesday, June 4th, at 6 p.m. at the civic centre. The public hearings were scheduled to be held concurrently with the public being asked to provide comment on the proposed Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw No. 215. See next week’s Pioneer for followup from these hearings.

75 years since D-Day, we remember

Exactly 75 years ago to the day, Allied forces banded together to storm the beach in Normandy during the Second World War. Known as D-Day, 150,000 Allied troops landed or parachuted into the invasion area on June 6th, 1944. A whopping 14,000 of those troops were Canadians - a vast number for our young country so far away from the battle-scarred grounds in Europe.

German forces had invaded much of western Europe in 1940. The English channel - that thin line of blue, was all that separated the German advance from Great Britain. Finally in 1944, the Allied forces were ready to storm mainland Europe with a targeted attack at Normandy.

The invasion was a resounding success, with Allied forces gaining a foothold on German-claimed mainland. But it came at a heavy price. According to the Canadian War Museum, Canadians suffered 1,074 casualties, including 359 killed. There were more than 5,000 Canadian deaths during the two and a half months of fighting in Normandy.

D-Day was not the end of the Second World War, but it was certainly the beginning of the end. And the 75th anniversary gives all the more reason to pause and remember.

It is so easy to forget. It’s easy to let the past stay in the past, especially as more and more of those who fought for our freedom in the Second World War pass away. It is not in the forefront of our minds as we rush about our days. But the phrase ‘lest we forget’ is spot on. We owe it to the men and women who fought and lived through days of war, to remember in days of peace.

We owe it to those who gave their lives, so we can freely live. We owe it to remember, so the next generation, and the one after that, and after that, will remember.

And we owe it to ourselves to keep the perspective of a history that reaches far back behind us and will stretch far past us, so that we live our lives with a mindset of legacy and love.

We are honoured to feature the story of the late invermere resident Arthur Bradford in the Pioneer this week (see page 14). Local author Elinor Florence interviewed Mr. Bradford and captured his story on her blog and in her book My Favourite Veterans: True Stories From World War Two’s Hometown Heroes. Draft OCP presented this Sunday Dear Editor: The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) will be presenting the draft Official Community Plan for the Lake Windermere Area on Sunday June 9th. The presentation and open house will be held at the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce building from 10 a.m. to noon.

The draft Lake Windermere Official Community Plan includes the majority of private land surrounding Lake Windermere. The Official Community Plan will lay out the guidelines for land use decisions for the next 10 years and will affect our community for years to come.

The draft Official Community Plan contains significant changes in some areas, for example included are plans for the subdivision or annexation of the undeveloped lands surrounding the District of Invermere to the south and the west. Future development contemplated in this plan, if it occurs,

will have economic and ecological impacts, and will shape our community’s footprint in the Valley.

Please take the time next Sunday to attend the presentation and open house. This is your best opportunity to impact the plan. Your feedback is valuable and will be considered by the RDEK staff and Area F Director Susan Clovechok before the plan is adopted.

Thank you to those at J.A. Laird that contribute with heart to a culture of support, reflection and action. The symbolic act of adding colour to the crosswalk, and the process that preceded it, may very well have been a moment in a child’s life that

allows them to see intrinsic value in who they are. Our children are coming of age in a time when people feel tremendously isolated despite the rampant ‘connection’ of social media. Taking symbolic action as a group toward diversity, equality and inclusion is brave, and important. Thank you - for my children, and all children.

The museum is now open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Come enjoy the buildings that will all be open and check out our summer theme: Capturing History Through the Camera Lens. We will have a range of media on display for our visitors to view: cameras, movie cameras, projectors, and fiche machines. Our local theater history will also be highlighted along with changes to the camera and their accessories.

This year we are looking into showing a few short films in the basement of the museum. Reservations will be taken as we have limited space; if the film gets booked up, another showing will be added so all can see it.

Good vibes onsite; complaints from a distance

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Faro Burgoyne said he is doing his best to be a good neighbour and spread good vibes at the Icecream You Scream Music Festival he’s been holding for the past three years.

“When you go to music festivals, you just see everybody at their best and it was just like a really cool feeling,” he said, adding that he and friends wanted to bring such joyous extravaganzas to the Valley too.

The problem: those vibes are a little loud for some of his neighbours’ tastes over in Fairmont Hot Springs.

Gayle Dougall, a Fairmont resident, said it sounds like the party is taking place next door.

“It just seems really unfair that the surrounding area gets to listen to that... all night long,” she said. “It’s not just a disruption of sleep. It’s maddening.”

Mr. Burgoyne, who is from the Akisq’nuk First Nation, holds his musical extravaganzas on land within the reserve where he said the chief and council “have my back with everything I’m trying to do here.”

The first time he held a festival at The Point, the sound travelled further than he had anticipated and left some Fairmont residents frustrated. Those neighbours tried turning to the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) with their noise complaints, although Mr. Burgoyne is governed through his First Nation.

Seeing a notice asking others to call the RDEK with their concerns about the noise, Mr. Burgoyne responded with a flyer of his own.

“We figured if we at least put the dates there, anyone could see and go ‘OK, maybe we could plan around it.’

Like if it really bothers them that much, they could go camping or fishing or turn up their own TVs or something. And we went door knocking too and we got some

pretty aggressive people doing that,” he said.

Door knocking went so badly that his team gave up after a few knocks.

His intention was to talk with Fairmont residents to “kind of put a face to music and show them that we’re people too. We’re not just hooligans out trying to throw a wild party. We’re trying to make a difference. We’re trying to take every step we can to do it with less impact.”

These steps are a courtesy – not something he is obligated to do – and there are no rules he needs to comply with around noise and quiet times.

“There’s no bylaws on the reserve for noise complaints,” said Sgt. Darren Kakuno, the detachment commander for the Columbia Valley RCMP. “We don’t have a lot of options there.”

Instead of policing volume, the RCMP will be making safety their priority by increasing police presence in the area and holding road checks to monitor for impaired driving.

Three years in, Mr. Burgoyne is still trying to make peace with the neighbouring community. His plans for the June 14th to 16th Icecream You Scream festival are to angle the backs of the speakers in the direction of Fairmont, create a barrier around the back of speakers for sound control, and after 3 a.m. to lower the volume.

He expects to see 400 guests from the Valley, all over B.C. and around the world join together to collaborate on building a temporary community.

“It’s like a gathering of creativity. Everybody comes out, they put on their best selves and they go and make friends,” he said.

Mr. Burgoyne also rents The Point to the Vibrant Music Festival, which took place last weekend, and the Wicked Woods Music Festival, which runs from September 13th to 16th.

Love of books shows love to kids

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Joanne Steedman loves books. And she loves sharing her passion with her students, setting the next generation up for success.

Ms. Steedman is the Kindergarten / grade 1 teacher at Edgewater Elementary School (EES). For her commitment to promoting literacy, the Community Literacy Planning Committee (CLPC) presented her with the 2018 Community Literacy Award.

The Community Literacy Award is given to a person or organization that goes the extra mile to support literacy in our community, said Sandy Kalesnikoff, community literacy coordinator with the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL).

“Celebrating and recognizing the promotion of literacy is important to both CBAL and the CLPC,” said Ms. Kalesnikoff, who bestowed the award to Ms. Steedman Friday, May 31st.

Ms. Kalesnikoff said it is of great value to have literacy advocates like Ms. Steedman in the Valley.

“We all know how important literacy is. But having people who do that extra to promote literacy, it helps keep it forefront in the community,” said Ms. Kalesnikoff.

Ms. Steedman was nominated because of her passion for literacy. The nominator noted that she “promotes and celebrates literacy” through extra literacy-based activities as part of her daily teaching, connecting with the Radium Public Library for school events such as Family Literacy Week, and checking out books every week for children in her class. She has organized a buddy reading program at the library, where school-aged children read with adult volunteers to increase their reading and comprehension skills. She also sat on the Radium Library board for seven years, and promotes the use and engagement of the public library in her community.

“I love books. I’ve always loved books,” Ms. Steedman remarked. “I really enjoy reading and I hope that

As a Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Steedman introduces kids to reading and literary skills.

“One of the best parts of being a teacher is when the light goes on all of a sudden, and they can read independently,” she said. “They go from sounding out letters, blending letter sounds together into words, all of a sudden into ‘I can read’.”

She loves when older students at the tight-knit school come into her class for buddy reading and seeing how far they have progressed since leaving her brightly-decorated classroom.

Ms. Steedman praised the work of the Radium Public Library, and the strong connections built between the library and Edgewater Elementary School. The new space has opened up opportunities for more engagement, programming, and opportunities for Edgewater and Radium kids, she pointed out.

While Ms. Steedman praised the great libary in Invermere, she said it is wonderful that if you live in Edgewater, you do not have to go all the way to Invermere to access great library resources.

“You can get those services in Radium, in a beautiful spot.”

Especially living in a small community, literacy becomes all the more valuable, she added.

“We live in a beautiful place. It’s small. So there are all these other worlds are out there that they can access through books,” she said. And, after all, she said of her strong promotion of literacy: “kids and books just go together!”

Ms. Steedman humbly pointed out there were many other community members who would be well deserving of this literacy award. CBAL recognized the other nominees as well: the Rotary club, Al Miller, and the Columbia Valley Rockies.

“Thank you for all you do to support literacy in the Valley,” Ms. Kalesnikoff said of all the nominees.

A poet in place

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Spillimacheen native Catherine Stewart is coming home, a box of books in her trunk, to share her poetry with a local audience.

She has not lived in Spillimacheen for 30 years. But her childhood spent outdoors, making root-houses and caves for her troll dolls, drinking water fetched by her mother from a creek a driving distance from her house, the draught of the outhouse through the winter chill, have stuck with her through three decades of living on Vancouver Island. Her childhood was framed by the Rockies and Purcell Mountains, where she roamed the Valley with her siblings and friends, or lay amongst the reeds, listening and studying the clouds. She had a small garden patch, where she remembers growing strawberries and radishes.

She went to school in Spillimacheen, then Edgewater, then on to David Thompson Secondary School.

Snow Melts First in the Middle of the Slough, Ms. Stewart’s debut book of poetry, is firmly planted in the roots of her childhood home.

“I live so far away from Spillimacheen,” she explained.

“Once you move away, everything is nostalgia. So I wrote without even thinking ‘am I going to publish this at the end’. I just wrote it to release everything that was dammed up inside of me I had to say.”

Ms. Stewart took a meandering, lifelong journey to becoming a published poet. She first found a love for poetry as a child.

“The first poem that ever made me feel good about writing was in grade 5,” Ms. Stewart said. Her grandmother was a big fan of literature, and one of her grandmother’s friends was an English teacher. They read a poem Ms. Stewart had written about school.

“This friend of hers said ‘oh, that’s such a good poem’.

It was so nice to hear something like that, it inspired me to keep writing.”

At 18, Ms. Stewart left Spillimacheen to pursue an education and career in science. She landed on Vancouver Island, where she has lived ever since. But at the age of 50, she returned to the classroom, earning a Bachelor of Arts in writing at the University of Victoria, followed by a Masters program at UBC. There she accumulated education,

advisement, and validation. Before the university program, she said she would write, but “never be quite happy with what I’d written.”

Going to university connected her with other writers, gave her a boost as an artist, and immersed her in the world of poetry.

“The trajectory of my life is what gives me stuff to write about,” Ms. Stewart reflected. “I remember my grandmother saying to me once, ‘you’ve got to write what you know’. Yes, you can do research. But there’s a kernel of what’s inside of you that ends up in everything you write.”

The choices she made have led Ms. Stewart to a life she absolutely loves. She talks of kayaking alongside orcas and camping on wild empty beaches. Her daughters have grown up with the sea salt in their hair.

“I like the life I’ve lived and the experiences I’ve had, and I recognize it’s probably what I needed, to learn the lessons I had to learn in this lifetime,” she said. “I think that wisdom is something that is gleaned from the path we’ve taken. A different path, a different person.”

Poetry to Ms. Stewart is like painting a picture.

“I create this image so everyone else can see what it is. That’s what I like about poetry, you can create a whole story,” she said.

One of her favourite poems in this debut book is called “The Moth”.

“I’ve pulled together my knowledge of the entomological world - my biotech is deeply involved with entomology, and family story. It’s a poem about my mother; she was a very special, beautiful person.”

Ms. Stewart will be presenting Snow Melts First in the Middle of the Slough Thursday, June 13th at the Invermere library, 6 p.m. She will have a stack of books available for sale ($12.95) at the event and encourages everyone to come out. Don’t be intimated that it is a book of poetry, she concludes. They are simply little stories that she would love to share. “Trains” is one such story she has gracefully allowed the Pioneer to reprint from her new book:

Trains

By Catherine Stewart Before the rooster, the train shuddered the house awake a hundred feet from the tracks.

Coal trains from Fernie, black smears along the river, an echo down the valley between the Rockies and Purcells.

It was a wheat train that derailed on the corner by my aunt’s house, broken red cars disgorged gold over the coal dust. We came with our gunny sacks, my parents, brother, sisters my aunt and her kids, second cousins. We came to the heat of the sun, the itch of chaff, the soft slur of the kernels sliding from scoop to sack.

For years afterwards the trains slowed before that corner and my cousins ran alongside, their worn sneakers slapping the stony rail bed, then airborne they scrabbled for a grip on the box car ladders.

For a moment they could go anywhere.

Arthur Bradford: The unhappiest man on the beach

They decided Southampton wasn’t safe from German bombers, so Trudy and the baby went to live with the elder Bradfords in Wales.

I interviewed air force veteran Arthur Bradford at his Invermere home before he died in 1999. Arthur had twinkling eyes, dry wit and the typical British habit of understatement. His experience on D-Day must have been horrendous, but he made it sound like a comical adventure!

Arthur made no claims to bravery.

“I headed for a concrete wall and hid behind it for three days.”

The beach was a scene of pandemonium. By sunset, an incredible 175,000 British, American, Canadian and Free French troops had landed on the Normandy coast.

Arthur remained huddled under his rock. On the third day, he was finally picked up by another landing craft, evacuating some of the wounded men off the beach.

Half-way across the English Channel, the landing craft was torpedoed and sunk! Once again, poor Arthur found himself in the drink.

For the second time in three days, he was pulled from the water by another vessel heading back to England, and he safely reached Southampton.

He went straight to an officer and requested compassionate leave for being torpedoed.

“Torpedoed! Spitfire pilots don’t get torpedoed!” was the officer’s response.

After a heated discussion, Arthur boarded a train for Wales, arriving in the middle of the night in a terrible rainstorm. He walked a mile to his house in the drenching rain, and knocked on the door, but nobody answered. He threw pebbles against the window until his wife Trudy opened the door.

“But you’re dead!” she cried out.

“I’m not dead, but I’m wet! Let me in!”

It wasn’t until he got inside that she burst into tears. She had already received a telegram saying that he was

missing in action.

After a short leave, Arthur returned to his squadron and was stationed in France, Belgium, and then Germany, until the long European war ended on May 8, 1945. As Arthur recalled: “Within an hour there was nothing left to drink in the mess!”

After the War Arthur returned to his teaching career. His only son Michael grew up and became a teacher like his father. Michael and his wife Rosemary, also a teacher, emigrated to Canada and settled in Invermere in 1970. Now retired, Michael finished his career as principal at Eileen Madson Primary School.

Arthur and his wife followed them to Invermere in 1985, where they enjoyed spending time with Mike and Rosemary, and their three granddaughters – Fiona, Claire and Amy. Fiona still lives in Invermere with her own family. After his wife died in 1994, Arthur Bradford lived alone in his cottage overlooking Kinsmen Beach until he passed away in 1999.

Every year on June 6th – the anniversary of D-Day – I remember Arthur Bradford. I think he is observing the celebrations from high above, zooming around in his Spitfire!

Arthur Bradford’s story and 26 other wartime interviews are included in a non-fiction book by local author Elinor Florence called My Favourite Veterans: True Stories From World War Two’s Hometown Heroes. The new fencing is super (no more dog problems?) and the clean-up of the Conrad Kain memorial and the new events sign are also great! Cheers to a wonderful Community Club Board! Wilmer rocks!

Cheers to the DOI staff who were working on cleaning the roads downtown a couple of weeks ago. I watched one of them come into the Bakery and show their appreciation to the staff for closing the doors - so that their customers would not be impacted by the flying dirt. Then as he departed, he again apologized to one of the customers near the door for having to shut the doors. Great work - a great representation of the DOI!

Jeers to the guy who ran my daughter off the road at Mcleod Meadows on the 93. You took a chance with someone’s life while trying to pass. Guess you wanted to get to your destination 5 minutes faster.

Cheers to all of the organizers of last weekend’s amazing soccer tournament! We knew a few of the Calgary teams - and they had a wonderful experience playing in our beautiful area!

Stanisław passed away after a sudden illness on Tuesday May 28, 2019. He is survived in Canada by his wife Krystyna, daughter Magalena, her husband Krzysztof and their daughter Maia; in Poland by his daughter Małgorzata, and her husband Krzysztof, 3 grandchildren (Pawel, Ewa, Jerzy) and 4 great grandchildren (Zygmunt, Edmund, Stefan, Kazimierz); and extended family in France.

Born in Łódź (Poland), Stanisław obtained his doctorate in the field of strength of materials at the Warsaw University of Technology; was a visiting professor at the Institute of Mechanics, Structural Analysis and Dynamics of Aerospace Structures at the Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences; and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Stanislaw had a successful career as professor at the Warsaw University of Technology where he was a three time recipient of the Jasinski Memorial Award granted by the Polish Academy of Sciences, and authored a book “Local Loads in Plates and Shells” published in Polish, Russian, and English.

In 1981, Stanisław and his family moved to Calgary, Canada where he joined the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Calgary. In Canada, Stanisław focused his research on the strength of materials and structures, solid mechanics, methods to improve pumping of crude oil and designing improved inflatable free-standing structures. Over the next 20 years, in addition to academic teaching, producing numerous publications, patenting a number of inventions and supervising master, doctoral and postdoctoral fellows, Stanisław continually pursued his passion for oil painting in his free time.

As an outdoor enthusiast Stanisław spent much time admiring the beauty of his surroundings, exploring the prairies, hiking the Rocky Mountains, vacationing, painting and gardening in the Columbia Valley, and sailing along British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. His heart was and remains in the Columbia Valley.

Stanisław’s loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Escaping doom and improving relationships

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Tim Richards and Kris Murell are unconventional marriage and family therapists. For starters, they’ll give you and your occasionally-aggravating loved one a complex problem to solve and then leave the room.

Their office is anything but relaxing, and the teams of clients they serve can get increasingly frazzled, raise their voices and sometimes let loose with a stream of curses.

Adding to the intensity, sessions are timed with a digital clock counting backwards until 00:00:00, the clients’ last chance to have an epiphany or get blown to smithereens. Theoretically, of course.

Over at Columbia Valley Escape Rooms, the expert pair of escapers find that puzzling together builds connections between families, spouses and teams.

“You get to understand how your partner thinks under pressure and how they act under pressure,” said Mr. Richards, who owns the business.

He and Mr. Murell have escaped around 100 rooms together, becoming such skilled collaborators along the way that it only made sense to work together.

“I think Tim learned that I’m smarter than he thinks,” Mr. Murell said with a laugh. “(Escape rooms) are good for strengthening relationships.”

Mr. Richards said working together to solve their way out of timed challenges has taught them to communicate better and improve their problem-solving skills.

Mr. Murell agreed and said: “We tend to approach a lot of life’s issues like a room.”

But healthier relationships are a side benefit. Their main goal is much simpler: to have a blast.

“The escape rooms offer a fun and exciting time,” Mr. Richards said. “We try to make the experience about the fun and not the escape.”

Columbia Valley Escape Rooms opened in Fairmont in March of 2018. Mr. Richards and Mr. Murell invent their own puzzles for the rooms, making clues out of whatever objects suit their theme.

When the pair ran a pop-up escape room in the boardroom at Mountain Hub on Wednesday, May 15th, they used office-related paraphernalia to create the game.

“We used things like employee files, company logos,”

They also supplied their own cup of pens, a clock and a set of secured safes.

“A lot of times (the rooms) just create themselves,” Mr. Murell said, adding that they invent entire rooms based around a particular theme or a prop like Roman pillars.

“We are avid escape-room artists. We love them,” Mr. Richards said.

While he and Mr. Murell can solve basically anything, they challenge themselves by seeing how quickly they can decode the clues. They invite families, partners, co-workers, friends and birthday-party revellers to the Columbia Valley Escape Rooms to race against the clock to stave off certain doom.

Even if your time runs out, you might inadvertently leave with more appreciation for your puzzling partner.

Students built shed for book donations Hunter Pike (left) and Austin Brockmeyer built a new home for book donations. The Grade 11 students at David Thompson Secondary School created the shed in their woodworking class after the Friends of the Invermere Public Library reached out to the school to see if the students would be willing to provide a better option than the Friends’ plastic donation bin that would blow away if it wasn’t pinned down with rocks.

Lynda Tutty, chair of the Friends group, said she is grateful for the new shed, which looks “so professional.”

The new shed couldn’t have come at a better time, with the Friends of the Invermere Public Library expecting increases in donations as they prepare for their Big Book Sale, taking place on July 13th.

Unfortunately, we did not have a volunteer joining us this week, but we did get to try out our new dissolved oxygen meter pen. If you have gone out sampling with us before you may remember performing a titration to find the amount of dissolved oxygen. Although it is cool to see the dramatic colour change, the titration measurements tend to be more difficult and less precise. We will continue to do both the titration and use the fancy new pen to compare how they perform.

Today the water was very green on the south end and had a lot of debris floating around. This is likely due to the spring run-off that brings silt, clay and organics down into the lake. Overall, a very beautiful morning!

Building kids a solid foundation of skills

By Lorene Keitch lorene@lorenekeitch.com Brightly coloured mats, a trampoline, even a giant inner-tube, catch your eye when you first walk into Purcell Pediatrics. That, and the smiling face of Catherine ‘Catty’ Kammann, who owns and operates the occupational therapy centre in Radium Hot Springs.

Ms. Kammann meets with families seeking support to succeed. When children struggle to learn, develop, or participate fully in daily activities, occupational therapists can help to set and achieve target goals in areas such as sensory processing, fine and gross motor skills, and daily living activities.

“Kids want to perform, and want to do well, and they do the best they can with what they’ve got. Our job really is to foster them to be successful,” Ms. Kammann explains.

Each child comes with his or her own unique sets of strengths and weaknesses, support network, and foundation on which to work. Ms. Kammann says there is certainly no ‘cookie cutter’ recipe for success, and each child is assessed and a program tailored to that individual and their family.

“If you think about a house, you need to have a really solid foundation. And we’re wanting kids and families to develop a solid foundation of skills,” says Ms. Kammann. “If you have that really good foundation, you can build all that higher level stuff on top. That higher level stuff can be academics, it’s social / emotional regulations and interactions, it’s language skills. So depending on where your gaps are, that’s where we want to build up the foundation.”

She offers assessments, individual therapy, specific interventions, and would like to offer group therapy as the need or opportunity arises for Valley families.

Ms. Kammann graduated with honours from McGill University’s Occupational Therapy program in 2005, launch-

ing her own practice in Canmore in 2009 before moving to the Valley in 2016. She recently opened Purcell Pediatrics in Radium.

Greta Joy has joined forces with Ms. Kammann at the new centre and will be offering therapeutic play through her company, Integrating Joy. Ms. Joy’s goal is to develop skills and social / emotional wellbeing for children through early years play.

“There’s a lot of misconceptions when it comes to play, that it doesn’t have value.

But it has so much value,” says Ms. Joy. “Stressed brains don’t learn, so that is a huge part of what we both do. We reduce the stress response, so that we can open up. Psychologically speaking, kids usually demonstrate what they need help with.

And if you come with the belief that they have inside them what they need to fix or heal, then you’re there like a catalyst, to witness and to guide.”

Ms. Joy has a masters in counselling psychology and 10 years training in play therapy as well as sand play. She hopes to start offering services this September, with therapeutic play and perhaps even attachment-based therapy parenting courses.

“We have a common approach, that we both love working with kids and families,” says Ms. Kammann. “Ultimately, we’re running two different practices out of here, offering two different services.”

Families do not need official diagnosed conditions, or referrals, to access services at either company.

Ms. Kamman says to parents on behalf of both Purcell Pediatrics and Integrating Joy: “You’re on a journey. We’d like to walk part or the whole journey with you, and hopefully we can make it a little easier, a little more straightforward.”

Integrating Joy and Purcell Pediatrics are hosting an open house meet and greet Thursday, June 13th from 4:30-7 p.m.
