Stan Kujala, a life-time Sproat Lake resident and founding member of the Alberni Valley Regatta Association (AVRA), placed 1st in the Unlimited Class and the Flat Bottom V-Drive Class in the 2018 Sproat Lake Regatta boat races. Kujala won the races with his 18 ft Cougar Flat Bottom drag boat powered by a 496 BBC Stroker. On July 28 and 29, 2018, Kujala took part in the newly revived Fraser Valley Drag Boat Association’s (FVDBA) Summer Opener in Harrison Mills and placed 1st in the Unlimited Class. The FVDBA also awarded him a trophy for Fastest Flat Bottom and a trophy for the Fastest Pass of the week-end. Not ready to put the boat away for the winter, Kujala traveled to Dexter, Oregon, USA, in midSeptember and took part in his first sanctioned race at the Columbia Drag Boat Association’s
(CDBA) Northwest Nationals. Kujala’s best pass on that week-end was 8.2 seconds on a 1000 ft track. Unfortunately, he got knocked out in the first round of eliminations by the eventual winner of the 8 Second Class, Gary Henning. Although Kujala returned home with no hardware, “I did have a ton of fun, met some great people and gained a lot of very useful knowledge and experience,” he said.
