Stan Kujala, a life-time Sproat Lake resident and founding member of the Alberni Valley Regatta Association (AVRA), placed 1st in the Unlimited Class and the Flat Bottom V-Drive Class in the 2018 Sproat Lake Regatta boat races. Kujala won the races with his 18 ft Cougar Flat Bottom drag boat powered by a 496 BBC Stroker. On July 28 and 29, 2018, Kujala took part in the newly revived Fraser Valley Drag Boat Association’s (FVDBA) Summer Opener in Harrison Mills and placed 1st in the Unlimited Class. The FVDBA also awarded him a trophy for Fastest Flat Bottom and a trophy for the Fastest Pass of the week-end. Not ready to put the boat away for the winter, Kujala traveled to Dexter, Oregon, USA, in midSeptember and took part in his first sanctioned race at the Columbia Drag Boat Association’s
(CDBA) Northwest Nationals. Kujala’s best pass on that week-end was 8.2 seconds on a 1000 ft track. Unfortunately, he got knocked out in the first round of eliminations by the eventual winner of the 8 Second Class, Gary Henning. Although Kujala returned home with no hardware, “I did have a ton of fun, met some great people and gained a lot of very useful knowledge and experience,” he said. The Sproat Lake Regatta has a long and varied history dating back 91 years to midsummer of 1928 when the first race was held on the lake. While the Regatta was held each succeeding summer in a gradually expanding form, it was by no means certain that it was an ‘Annual’ event. The 1929 competitions included races of up to five miles and boats up to 20 hp. The Sproat Lake Motor Boat Club was formed in June 1930 with the object of sponsoring and expanding the event further.

The following five years saw the introduction of ‘racing hydroplanes,’ the Regatta’s swimming and water sports competitions and a dance. These events drew a large portion of the valley’s rather small population at the time. But gradually, the event felt the effects of the depression and went into the slump which finally killed it off after the 1935 competitions. First, the depression, and then the war years made the challenging roar of powerful engines and the feast and frolic always associated with a Regatta,

nothing more than a warm memory for almost 20 years. In 1953, the Sproat Lake Ratepayers’ Association (SLRA), with Frank Flitton as chairman of the committee, saw the growing interest in boating and people with the urge to set out on the water with fast boats and the Regattas were revived. The SLRA built the Regatta into something that shaped it into one of the top events in the Northwest. They affiliated with the Canadian Boating Association and received official sanction for the event which meant that times set up during a competition would stand as national or international records. This attracted more, larger and faster boats from the Mainland and the US. In 1958, Joe Van Bergen, a long-time Alberni resident, set a new Canadian record travelling over 69 mph in his 13 ft. boat ‘Sassy.’ In 1959, the Regatta had grown so large, the SLRA decided they could no longer handle the workload so the Port Alberni Kinsmen Club (PAKC) took over the sponsorship of the event. The Regattas were successful but the organizers were getting tired. While thousands came to see the races, swimming and water sport activities, Mayor Fred Bishop opened the last Regatta in 1962.
In 2013, a new group registered the Alberni Valley Regatta Association (AVRA) with the help of Joe Van Bergen, then 87 years of age, and sponsored a boat ‘Show & Shine,’ plus an impromptu race on the Sunday followed by a poker run which proved to be very popular. The Regatta has continued to grow every year and has become a successful event once again and this year is the 6th Annual also referred to as ‘Lightning on the Lake.’

We are running a 10-inch triple disc clutch then into a 2-speed Lenco transmission through a set of 200 over drive gears and out to a 12 by 17 cleaver prop. This boat is period correct for NDBA sanctioned racing 1980. The name ‘The Animal’ has history with me, the late Al bush, Bill Harrison, and Bob Chrysty, who were involved in building a twin propeller hydro that we never finished due to the deaths of my three friends...we were close - I ran a picture – ‘The Animal is Coming,’ an actual add we ran in Hot Boat magazine in 1986 when we were going to debut the dual prop boat. The Animal is proud to carry their names on the side of her hull including local race legends Wade Olson, Ray O’Hara and Mike Killinsworth. This will be our fourth time in the Alberni Valley making the Animal feel “It is home.”

Bert Henderson, of Mission, B.C., has been racing competitively for 21 years with another 15 years of lake rodding. Henderson has raced with the Fraser Valley Drag Boat Association (FVDBA) and the Columbia Drag Boat Association (CDBA) from 1984 to 2002. He then just lake rodded until he returned to drag racing at the Alberni Valley Regatta Association’s (AVRA) 2016 competitions with his 1983 Cougar 7/8” runner bottom (flat) boat nicknamed the ‘Supernatural.’ “I bought the hull in 2010. Completed it in 2012 but didn’t get to use it until late 2015,” Henderson said. “At the 2016 AVRA, it made its first full pass.” It’s a family affair really, with his wife Sam and her dad Herby, who is also a boat builder and the one who built last year’s AVRA winner Stan Kujala’s ‘777’ flat runner bottom boat.

The three boat enthusiasts have been racing at Sproat Lake since 2016 and are expected again at this 2019 competition. “I love testing a new power plant, hull or parts combo,” Henderson commented, “And when I’m not racing, I build drag boats and custom parts and go lake rodding. “Never quit doing what you love,” Henderson quoted.

Tyler Mearns races the ‘Nine Two Six (926)’ boat sponsored by Pacific Coast Electric Ltd. Mearns has been racing since 2015 and currently drives a 1973 Southwind Jet Boat with a V-Bottom haul. He is running a naturally aspirated 496 Big Block Chevy. The horse power is unknown but is said to be ‘real lots.’ Some new modification Mearns has added for this year are: moving the pump back six (6) inches and adding a ride plate. Mearns, his wife Robin and his Junior Dragster Rhett, are active members of the Alberni Valley Regatta Association (AVRA). Mearns will be running his boat in both the Jet Boat and the Unlimited classes. When asked why he likes boating? Mearns replies with a grin: “The sound of an open header BBC (Big Block Chevy).”

Good luck from team Nexcar!
Al and Neil Peffers are a father and son team who thrive on high speed and living on the edge. They have always done activities together whether it be camping, hunting, motocross racing or just hanging out.
This year Al will be racing his ‘Mirage’ and would like to give a shout out to Mike Nass of HNR Power Boats for rebuilding his power head. Also, a thank you to Brook B for helping him set up the engine and dialing it in.
Al (father) and Neil, however, always come back to what they love best … THE WATER!
Al and Neil both race their 11 ft HNR mini pickle forks in the Formula 40 competition which always creates an entertaining moment to watch father and son dual it out. May it be noted - the son has left his dad in the spray more times then not. Let’s see what this year brings!

2.5 HP Suzuki Motor Raffle Dennis Griffith, co-owner of Breakers Marine, originally won the raffled 2.5 HP Suzuki outboard motor, donated to the AVRA in 2018, by Suzuki Canada and Breakers Marine. Once the crowd stopped laughing, Griffith then advised the group that he would re-raffle the motor amongst the paying race participants. Ryan Buss, from the mainland, was the second lucky raffle winner at last year’s boat race regatta. James Allen, of the Rescue Squad, in photo above at right, holds the donated 2.5 HP Suzuki outboard, while Dennis Griffith, co-owner of Breakers Marine, shows off his trophies for winner of 200 HP and under – pro stock, and winner 200 HP and under – ski boat.
