MOTHER’S DAY SPECIAL Myles and mom: the miracle baby

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Kayla Chinchar felt alright, just pregnant, when she went for her regular checkup at 28 weeks. But she and the baby she was carrying were anything but fine.

At her appointment, she learned that her blood pressure was alarmingly high and that she had developed pre-eclampsia, a pregnancy-related condition that can harm both mother and baby. Ms. Chinchar was rushed to Cranbrook in an ambulance where she had a C-section.

“The baby was starting to go into distress and my body was completely in distress,” she said. “In the matter of a day, I went from being fairly well and pregnant to having a baby.”

A mere twenty-five hours after her routine checkup, Myles was born at 2.4 pounds.

The tiny baby, who didn’t utter even the faintest cry, was whisked away from her.

“They had to immediately stick tubes down his throat to get him breathing,” she said. “He was covered in wire and tubes... It was very scary. I was terrified.”

Her fears only escalated as Myles’ lung collapsed a few hours after he was born.

“At that point I was basically preparing myself that he wasn’t going to make it,” Ms. Chinchar said.

The brand-new mom estimated that she got to spend about five minutes with her son before Myles was rushed to Edmonton ahead of her. Ms. Chinchar flew after him a day later when she was stable enough to transfer from one hospital to the next.

Meanwhile, her partner Mike Tegart raced to pack up everything his little family would need for an extended hospital stay.

After two days apart, Ms. Chinchar and Myles were reunited. She wasn’t yet allowed to hold her too-tiny baby, but she could rest her hand on his little body and tell him how much she loved him.

When Myles was a week old, she got to hold him for the first time. He was so little he fit in her hands.

“It was the best feeling in the world, the joy you feel holding your baby,” she said.

“It was so comforting.”

Myles’ collapsed lung re-inflated and he kept getting bigger, an ounce at a time.

His first cries – which didn’t come until he was two weeks old – melted her heart.

“He just had this cute little cry. It was so heartwarming to finally hear him,” she said.

In addition to treasuring his first cries, Ms. Chinchar cherished each milestone from giving him his first bath in a tub to dressing him in a premie onesie. One month in, she held a birthday party for him where she “put him in a little outfit and just held him” and felt overwhelmed with gratitude.

“I couldn’t believe we had made it that far,” she said.

By six weeks, when Ms. Chinchar spoke with the Pioneer, Myles was up to 4.1 pounds and making the cutest expressions from grins to glares.

“He’s got quite the personality,” she said. “He’ll smile in his sleep... He’s generally a very happy baby.”

Myles is the 23-year-old mother’s first baby. She’s not sure but he may also be her last as any future pregnancies she may have could also be at risk.

Young Invermere mom faces battle(s) of her life

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Kasia Kowalowka thought she had faced her biggest battle yet. And beaten it. But two months after one health crisis was over, Ms. Kowalowka is fighting for her life again.

Her trouble started last year. The young Invermere mother, aged 22, began experiencing pain in her arm and shoulder. Her doctor told her it was tendinitis, but the pain kept getting worse. One day at work she felt an electric shock charge through her body and then found she could not lift her arm. A coworker saw that her whole arm was swollen and took her to the hospital. While the X-ray showed nothing was wrong, she was still in agony. She went back to her doctor again, but nothing new was uncovered.

“It was so painful . . . I cried most nights going to bed,” she said. “I was in so much pain, they were giving me morphine.”

Five or six months later, and still aching, she was on her way to work another day when she slipped on some ice and popped her shoulder. After her shift she walked to the hospital to ask them to put her shoulder back in place. The hospital took an X-ray and spotted something unusual.

This past week, Monday, April 29th through Sunday, May 5th the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 62 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, April 29th at approximately 1:30 p.m., RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Panorama Drive and Industrial Road 1 in Invermere.

The driver of a Honda Accord indicated he was making a left turn onto Industrial Road 1 and failed to yield for an oncoming GMC pickup. Neither driver was injured. The driver of the Honda was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield on a left turn.

• On Tuesday, April 30th at 10 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were advised of a suspicious Dodge Caravan that had been parked on Park Drive East and St. Joseph Street in Radium Hot Springs since Friday night. Another witness recalled seeing individuals loading items from the van into a dark coloured Chevrolet truck then quickly departing.

The Dodge Caravan, which was confirmed to be stolen out of Alberta, was forensically examined for evidence. Police continue to investigate and are asking anybody with information to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP. • On Wednesday, May 1st the owner of a black 2007 Toyota Tundra with BC license plate NA1857 reported his pickup had been stolen from an auto repair shop on Industrial Road 2 in Invermere sometime between Friday, April 26th and Wednesday, May 1st. The truck has not yet been located.

• On Thursday, May 2nd police received a report that a black SUV had failed to stop for a school bus that had its flashing lights and stop sign activated on Highway 93/95 and Wagon Wheel Road on April 11th, 2019.

A license plate along with sufficient evidence for charges was obtained. The registered owner of the vehicle will be served a violation ticket for failing to stop for a school bus with lights activated.

• On Friday, May 3rd at 4:30 a.m. police were dispatched to an alarm at the Gas Plus gas station in Fairmont Hot Springs. Police discovered a large rock had been thrown through the front glass doors.

Video surveillance showed two tall slim males with hoodies over their heads enter the business. The males took beef jerky and lighters from the store and departed within ten seconds. One of the males was wearing a multi-colour striped hoodie. Anybody with information is asked to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP. • On Friday, May 3rd police located and arrested a 28-year-old male in Invermere for several outstanding warrants. Upon searching the male, police located a canister of bear spray in his waist band.

In this case there was no reason to believe the bear spray was for protection from wildlife. Police recommended a charge of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The male was brought before a Justice and released for court at a later date.

• On Saturday, May 4th at about 5:30 p.m. police responded to a single vehicle collision on Brisco Road in Brisco. The responding officer located a black GMC Yukon in a ditch. The driver had departed the scene but later returned to the vehicle. The officer noted signs of alcohol impairment on the driver and issued him a 24hour driving prohibition.

• Police continue to search for Elizabeth Stewart who was last seen in Invermere on January 14th, 2019. Elizabeth is a 76 year-old Caucasian female, 5’7” tall with blonde hair and green eyes.

RCMP have followed up on a number of investigative avenues since her disappearance however Elizabeth remains missing. Columbia Valley and Kimberley Search & Rescue volunteered their time over this past weekend to search areas that Ms. Stewart may have frequented in the past, unfortunately no evidence was located.

Now that the snow has melted, police are asking residents to check their properties and outbuildings for anything out of the ordinary. If you have any information about Elizabeth’s whereabouts, please contact the Columbia Valley RCMP.

Passing motorists stop grass fire

A small grass fire flared up between Fairmont Hot Springs and Canal Flats last week, but was quickly put out.

The fire, which fire fighters suspect was human caused, sprang up sometime shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 2nd at the Columbia Lake viewpoint along Highway 93/95. Motorists passing by noticed the flames spreading in the grass, quickly called the Fairmont Fire Department, and then pulled over to do their best to contain the fire using a few hand tools and brooms they happened to have on hand in their vehicle.

“They did a good job of containing the fire,” Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Service deputy chief Drew Sinclair told the Pioneer. “It was pretty much out by the time we got there. We spent an hour guarding and monitoring the fire, and wetting the edge.”

The Fairmont Fire Department sent a total of nine members to attend the call, and a few members of the B.C. Wildfire Service were also on hand. At its maximum extent the fire was no more than half a hectare in size,

Jake Jacobsen, the District of Invermere’s public works foreman, said a crew of five responded after they received a call around 4 p.m. Within forty minutes, they had located the problem area and isolated the break.

Mr. Sinclair told the Pioneer that the Columbia Valley is just coming out of what he calls the “spring dip” as vegetation is only now just starting to take up moisture.

“I was a bit surprised, with the rain we had the night before, that this one (the fire) ran as far as it did,” he said.

The East Kootenay has seen a few small, scattered grass fires so far this spring.

The District is running the Yard Waste Pick-up Program to assist residents in disposing of spring yard waste. The program will be a reservation based system where residents are to call the Municipal Office at 250-342-9281 and ask to be put on the reservation list for Yard Waste Pick-up. Residents are to provide the following information to Municipal Staff :

Residents will be required to place their yard waste at the curb for pickup after 8 am on the day of pick- up after you have placed your reservation and confirmed your street address.

Yard waste must be placed in clear plastic or brown paper bags and includes leaf and grass material. Branches and pruning are to be bundled in maximum 4 foot bundles and are not to exceed 50 lbs in weight.

Staff will not pick up any yard waste if it does not meet the above requirements. If you have not placed a reservation, your yard waste will not be picked up.

PERSPECTIVE Historical Lens

Good night, and good luck

It has been an incredible and fulfilling seven years here at the Pioneer, the first three in advertising sales and the last four as publisher. Today I announce my retirement and will be stepping away after our long weekend edition is sent to press on May 14th. Like most who ease into retirement,s my plan is to keep busy. You will see the occasional byline or photo credit in the Pioneer and I will dabble where needed.

The experience of working at a local newspaper, especially one that has such a close connection to the community it serves, has been intensely rewarding. Each day I had the opportunity to talk with business and community leaders, all of whom share a deep appreciation for what the Valley offers and a commitment to making the lives of our friends and neighbours better.

To the business community, thank you for your ongoing support and I wish each of you success and prosperity in the coming years. It is you that provide an opportunity for most of us to live in this beautiful place and through your support of local charities and service groups you help our communities flourish.

To our readers, thank you for picking us up week after week. It is because of you that the Pioneer has one of the highest audited readerships in B.C., with over 98 per cent of the 6,400 copies we print weekly being picked up and read. In a Valley with a total population of roughly 8,500 that is high praise indeed.

To our elected officials, thank you for your accessibility as we write the weekly news and to your dedication to those that elected you.

To those who volunteer their time, thank you. If you are interested in volunteering on a casual basis I urge you to register as a volunteer at www.volunteercv.ca. THE BAD PLASTIC

Fresh old ideas

One of the great advantages of plastics is also the cause of its worst problem. Plastic is durable. It does not easily break down and so it exists far beyond its intended use. Moreover many plastic items are used for only a few short minutes, such as shopping bags, take out coffee lids and soda straws.

When North America was first discovered, had those explorers arrived with plastic water bottles those bottles would still be around today. It takes between 450 years to never for plastic to break down.

Throw away plastic ends up as garbage in our urban dumps and pollutes the oceans. Tossing off a soda straw may seem like an innocent act until we recog-

nize that there are trillions upon trillions of them.

In the Pacific Ocean there are many plastic islands. The largest one is about half way between Hawaii and California and it measures 1.6 million square kilometres. It is estimated that the collection of plastic in that gathering is 80,000 metric tons representing 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic. Researchers indicate that these islands are rapidly expanding.

Every year eight billion kilograms of plastic enters the oceans. Sunlight, wind, waves and heat break plastic into smaller and smaller bits. These tiny particles of plastic are mistaken for food by sea life and can be ingested. Nearly 700 species are negatively affected by plastic including some endangered ones. Research is underway where tanks containing much higher concentrations of plastic particles are being studied for the long-term impact on marine life. Micro particles of plastic are so prevalent, spreading as they do through ecosystems and food chains, that they are even found in honey.

Almost all of the ocean plastics enter the ocean from rivers. Fifteen of the 20 most plastic polluting rivers are in Asia; the worst is in Malaysia.

However, three young Dutch women have recently developed and perfected an amazing system for collecting plastic trash in rivers. It is called The Great Bubble Barrier.

Whitewater kayak enthusiasts know how to ferry a river and will easily understand the concept of angling from one side of the river to the other.

What these ladies did on Netherlands rivers was to lay a plastic pipe diagonally on the floor of the river. This pipe had a row of holes drilled on the top of the pipe and then forced air was pumped into one end. Plastic floating on the river met this angled row of vigorous bubbles and was directed to a catchment on the other side of the river. More than 80 per cent of the plastic was captured before entering the ocean.

These Dutch researchers were able to collect 86,000 tons of plastic annually from a country that already has a superb collection and recycling program. They are hoping that this

system will soon be adopted in Asia.

This practise does not impair the movement of fish or ships.

Norway, using high value deposits and well-placed collection units, recovers 97 per cent of plastic bottles.

The other good news is that plastics used for packaging can be forced by law to be recyclable or made of biodegradable plastic.

Scooping up and hauling ocean plastics and controlling river movement of plastics is a secondary resort.

The primary resort is all of us. We need to determine what families of plastics should be used on what products and, importantly, how we citizens manage plastic at the end of its useful life.

Plastics are here to stay but a great deal more needs to be done to control the types of plastics being used along with new standards for managing the final use.

Kayla Marie started at sea level. She was born on the West Coast, then her path took her to Grand Prairie, Alberta. After years of living under open skies, she was determined to be a B.C. girl again. Finally, she climbed her way into the Valley. That 830 metre elevation gain from the Pacific to peaks, she says, was the best thing to ever happen to her.

Mrs. Marie moved here almost exactly two years ago now. Since she moved, she’s enjoyed all the physical activities the Columbia Valley has to offer such as exploring its backcountry, or paddling on its numerous lakes and rivers. After a year of living here, she decided that she wanted to share her passion for the outdoors with other women as well.

Recently, Mrs. Marie began a Facebook group called “Women Who Wander”.

“I’ve noticed a big demand from women who want to get out into the mountains and explore, but they just don’t know how to, or they don’t have the resources. This group is for like-minded women who want to get together to conquer mountains and their fears of climbing them,” says Mrs. Marie.

If this newly formed group were a mountain trail, Mrs. Marie would be standing near the beginning, and her future plans for the group would indicate an ambitious climb ahead.

Since it began, Mrs. Marie says the group has grown exponentially, especially in the last few months. Currently, the Facebook group has 150 members, each with hiking skills that range from beginner to advanced.

“It’s really rewarding to see,” she says. “I don’t go out and recruit people. Everybody who has joined the group has joined because they’re interested and want to get out and explore.”

So far, Mrs. Marie has organized and executed several events for the group such as an evening paddle in early April, followed by weekend hikes along whatever trails were snow-free at the time.

But those events were just the beginning; next to

Submitted photo come is the real climb, and, spoiler alert, there might be some ropes involved.

Mrs. Marie has a list of events planned. These events will include an overnight hike to Diana Lake Lodge, a Mt. Swansea hike, a nature BINGO game for group members with young children, and a meet and greet campfire that she will be hosting at her house.

In the future, Mrs. Marie wants to organize an introduction to mountain biking and an introduction to outdoor climbing class as well. She would also like to make the group and membership to it more official.

“I really want to create a sense of value in this group,”she says. To do this, she’s hoping to introduce a small annual membership fee that will help pay for group activities, as well as host monthly meetings to have input from members.

On top of working a full time job and taking care of her 3 year old, Mrs. Marie currently devotes a few hours a week to managing the group. “But it’s worth it. There’s just something about having women together that’s so inspiring,” she says.

New map highlights Valley projects

By Katie Watt intern@columbiavalleypioneer.com Earlier this week the Forest Enhancement Society of British Columbia (FESBC) announced the launch of a new virtual project map which provides the public with information on the locations and types of projects the society is funding — including some right here in the Columbia Valley.

Currently in the Columbia Valley, $534, 360 has

been given by FESBC to support three different projects, which all share the same purpose of reducing the risk of wildfire, and are taking place in Rushmere, Dry Gulch, and near the Akisqnuk First Nations reserve.

The Dry Gulch forest management project is the largest of the three and has received $498, 360. Work in Dry Gulch began earlier this week, and is being carried out by local company Wildlands Eco-Forestry Inc. Continued on page 10. . .

By Katie Watt intern@columbiavalleypioneer.com United Dance Studio in Invermere does much more than just dance the night away. In fact, sometimes they dance the whole week away, with the dancers spending more than 8 hours a week practicing their routines.

Their hard work and commitment to the sport recently paid off, as earlier this April they returned from various dance competitions across Alberta carrying 13 trophies home with them.

“We’re just like a big family,” says Michelle Jensen, one of the head instructors at United Dance. Ms. Jensen is a former dancer herself, and instructs at United along with Melyssa Hecher.

“At competitions, it’s so great to see the senior dancers cheering on the juniors, and the juniors running to the seniors after a performance.”

While in Alberta, they competed in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and Calgary against 285 other groups. On top of taking home 13 trophies, the team also managed to qualify at two of the three competitive dance offs, and managed to take home two third place trophies.

United Dance studio has both competitive and recreational dancers. In the recreational category, the dancers’ ages range from 4-13, while in the competitive category they range from 7-17.

“It’s so rewarding to teach them, and to see them fall in love with dance as much as we did,” says Mrs. Hecher.

The dancers and coaches have been working together to perfect their routines since March. These routines include a variety of dance styles such as hip-hop, ballet, acrobatics, jazz, and more.

To showcase their hard work to the community, United Dance will be holding year-end shows in Invermere and Cranbrook in May and June.

“We’re very excited to show Invermere what the dancers have been working on,” says Mrs. Hecher. “They’ve improved so much, and we’re so proud and excited for them.”

The Invermere showing will serve as a “teaser” for the Cranbrook event, and will be held on May 21st at the Columbia Valley Centre. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the dancing will begin at 6 p.m. Viewers can expect to see . . . ‘New’ from page 8 This project will encompass 120 hectares of land,” said Wildlands owner Brad Munroe. The Columbia Valley’s United Dance Studio has had a stellar season so far and is gearing up for its year end show.

REACH Art Show Returns

Is it a room filled with paintings worth thousands of dollars, but with such simple designs on them that you think hey, my 8 year old could do that! If so, then it’s understandable why you may not be so interested in attending one.

But those are adult art shows, and teen art shows, assures Robyn Oliver, are much different.

Mrs. Oliver is one of the organizers of this year’s annual REACH Art Show, and is also an art teacher at the local high school, David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS).

REACH is an art show that features the artwork of the Valley’s high school students. This year, the show’s opening is on May 31st at Pynelogs Art Gallery, and it will stay up for public viewing until June 15th.

“This is a great opportunity for family and friends of the young artists to see what they’ve been working on,” says Mrs. Oliver, adding that “and even if you’re neither of those, it’s still nice to see what the youth of the community are working on. The pieces can be quite inspiring.”

from paintings that depict the students’ emotions, to a series of dinosaur drawings.

This is the 15th year of the REACH Art Show. This year, the event will open at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a popcorn fundraiser. On the opening night, $5 will get you a handmade bowl (made by either Mrs. Oliver herself or one of her many students) and bottomless popcorn for the evening. At 7 p.m., winners of the creative contest, an annual contest held at DTSS where participants are asked to create artwork around a chosen theme, will be announced. Shortly thereafter, Pynelogs’ “Fresh Fridays” Open Mic night will begin, and will be hosted by local musician, Oso Simple.

At this year’s show, nearly 250 unique pieces of artwork from 150 artists will be featured. According to Mrs. Oliver, the difference between artwork made by teenagers and artwork made by adults is that “teens are willing to experiment a lot more. They’re trying a lot of different media, and because their focus isn’t on making money, they’re also a lot more willing to see what works and what doesn’t.”

A tradition of the REACH Show is that one piece of student artwork is chosen to go on the poster for the event. This year, a painting by grade 12 student, Maddy Wells, was chosen. Her painting depicts the outline of a buck, with a burning scene of last summer’s forest fires within the silhouette.

Ms. Wells has been making art ever since she could pick up a pencil, and her first art show was in grade 4. “I like that everybody has their own style in art,” says Ms. Wells.

But due to shyness, says Mrs. Oliver, it’s not always the case that students are willing to share that style. “For every few pieces that do go in, there’s at least one that I wish went in.”

The antidote to shyness is exposure, and that’s what the REACH Art Show aims to do, says Mrs. Oliver. “I think it’s important to give the students an opportunity to see their art in a different setting. You can’t create art in a bubble. Talking about art and sharing it is a big part of the process of actually making it.”

If an emergency should happen in your community, it could take emergency workers some time to get to you. By simply planning ahead, you will be better prepared to face a range of emergencies whenever and wherever they may arise.

It is vital to know and understand the risks that are present in our region.

In the East Kootenay our top three risks are wildfire, flood and hazardous materials incidents such as industrial or transportation accidents. We also have other natural events like landslides, wind storms and ice storms.

There are some basic supplies that you will need in order to be selfsufficient through 72 hours. It is important that your kit is easy to carry and its location is known by all members of the household. Keep the kit in a backpack, duffel bag or roller suitcase stored in an easy to reach location near one of your home’s exits.

It is imperative for every household to have a unique emergency plan that helps each member of the home know what to do in case of an emergency. Make sure to discuss what steps you would take in different situations, as you may not all be together when an emergency occurs.

WATER – a minimum of two litres per person per day, store in small/easy to carry bottles FOOD – healthy, shelf stable food (make sure to replace annually) CAN OPENER FLASHLIGHT – wind-up or battery-powered (extra batteries) RADIO – wind-up or batterypowered (extra batteries)

Myles is still in need of care and may have to spend another two or three months in the hospital. He has a lung disease that could take five years to heal.

Ms. Chinchar didn’t escape her pregnancy unscathed either. While she isn’t a patient anymore, her kidneys were damaged.

But mother and baby are both on the mend.

“It’s a complete miracle that my baby is alive. And he’s doing as well as can be expected,” she said.

The pair were transferred from Edmonton to Red Deer, but Ms. Chinchar is hoping for another transfer to get closer to home and so Mr. Tegart doesn’t have to travel so far to see his little family.

Ms. Chinchar is awed by how kind the Valley has been in the time following Myles’ early arrival. She offers “a giant thank you” to everyone who is helping out, checking up on her and donating to her family. Finances are tight, she said, so any little bit helps cover gas so Mr. Tegart can visit. “The whole Valley has been there for us the entire time,” she said. “It’s really comforting knowing that there’s so many people supporting us... (and) so many people waiting to see me and meet my baby.”

Wayne Hanson

August 25th, 1942 – April 13th, 2019 On the afternoon of Saturday, April 13, 2019, “Peter” Wayne Morris Hanson passed away peacefully with his family at his side, along with his love, Edna Green-MacLean.

Wayne was born on August 25, 1942 in Victoria B.C. Wayne leaves to mourn his passing his first, last, and forever love, Edna Green-MacLean; his daughter Tara (Chris Morh); his granddaughter Savannah. As well, he leaves behind his siblings Mervin, Mary, Johnny and Ann; Numerous nieces and nephews; His sister-in-law Gladys Hanson; the Clowers Family – Bob (Bonnie) Don, David, Burdell Tom, Meloney and Pam and many other extended family and friends.

Wayne retired after 25 years with the B.C. Ambulance Service.

He liked playing golf and enjoyed watching it on TV. He also enjoyed watching hockey and baseball with the Toronto Maple Leafs being his favourite hockey team and the Blue Jays for baseball.

In his high school days it was fun to see American visitors scream when they saw Wayne saying Elvis is in town. He loved country music and watching the History Channel on TV. Wayne was always there to help others. I loved him for that and for the dinners with Lemon Pie. We would like to thank everyone that had a hand in Wayne’s care over the past few years. Special thanks goes to Dr. Johnson, Dr. Brown, Kendall, Melissa, Melinda ,Thelma and The B.C. Ambulance Service.

At Wayne’s request there will be no funeral. If friends wish to do something in his memory, I know Wayne would like you to pay it forward by helping someone in need.

“I heard a doctor say ‘that was the strangest thing I’d ever seen’.”

They sent her to Cranbrook for a CT scan where they uncovered the source of her incredible discomfort.

“Hardest thing in life was to be given a box of tissues and told you have cancer,” she recalled.

It was osteosarcoma cancer (cancer of the bone). She underwent multiple surgeries. This past January, Ms. Kowalowka was finally in remission, and was ready to live a normal life again. But then in March, she got very sick. She went to the hospital, where she was given anti-nausea medication and sent home. After being home from work for a week and still not well, she knew she needed to seek out further help.

“I knew something was wrong. I went back and demanded help,” she said. “They put me in an ambulance to Cranbrook.”

In Cranbrook, they found that she was in the early stages of liver failure. And her gall bladder was inflamed. And it appeared her stomach was not digesting properly. After a CT scan, the puzzle was solved. Her heart was failing, and that was leading to her other organs shutting down. Her heart is now functioning at only 20 per cent of normal.

“I was dying,” she said. “There was nothing more Cranbrook could do to save my life.”

She was airlifted by STARS to Foothills Hospital in Calgary, where she spent two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit fighting for her life.

“I almost didn’t make it,” she shared.

But she made it out of ICU and spent two more weeks in the hospital before she was released.

However, she is unable to return to Invermere because she is quite sick and needs to stay near the specialists in Calgary. To add to the trauma, Ms. Kowalowka is unable to be on the heart transplant list until she is five years cancer-free. Doctors have told her heart failures never get better, they only ever get worse. But Ms. Kowalowka chooses to cling to hope.

“I believe in miracles,” she said.

She has faith, because she has faced hard things before and made it out the other side. When she was 17, she met a guy. Jon was her first love, her first boyfriend, her first everything. They got pregnant, and she contemplated getting an abortion.

Then on September 19th, 2013, the unexpected happened.

“He woke me up and said ‘I’m going to work’.

One hour later – an hour after he walked out the door – he died in a car accident.”

She decided to keep the baby. Her daughter Daniela is now almost five years old, and Ms. Kowalowka says through all of this, it is love that keeps her going.

“Love for my daughter, love for my family, love for my friends,” Ms. Kowalowka summed up.

Her daughter is living with her grandmother in Calgary right now, and Ms. Kowalowka is bouncing between living with a few relatives and friends. She was on disability funding in B.C. because of her cancer. However, since she has now been out of the province for more than 30 days, that funding has been cut off. Because she is not an Alberta resident, that province will not support her financially either. Her sister has started a GoFundMe to help her through this time. We came, we mowed, we kicked grass!

The third annual Mowers and Music festival took place on Saturday, May 4th at the Canal Flats RV Campground. Event organizer Kelly Kask estimated that 800 redneck-loving fans (his term) took in the entertainment which included lawnmower and belt sander races, a chili cookoff and live music. The event may span two days next year and include prizes for anyone with a full set of tooth.

Hello, springtime beauty

By Laura Hermakin Reverend Windermere Valley Shared Ministry Hello, springtime beauty. Thank you for reminding me that possibilities abound. Winter has passed and spring is in the air. In my church world, we are celebrating the season of Easter, 50 days of looking with fresh eyes for renewal and hope around us as we reflect on the resurrection of the Christ and the promise of God of unconditional love and abundant life. And for a season, I am especially aware of the connectedness of all Creation.

Many people, regardless of their faith perspective, delight in the traditions and symbols of the Easter Season: Easter eggs, rabbits, colourful flowers, hatching chicks, dragonflies, butterflies, and other reminders that the season of Easter is a time of new life, re-birth and starting fresh. When we choose to make everything new, regardless of the time of the year or a particular date on the calendar, we live as Easter people – people of joy and life.

Perhaps starting fresh and choosing new life involves the consideration of a more minimalist lifestyle (what

things can we donate, give away, or get rid of?) Perhaps it involves spring cleaning, downsizing or choosing a new way of approaching life through exercise, food choices, relationships and habits. Whatever our faith approach, Easter can be lived, enjoyed and celebrated any time.

Perhaps you are anticipating summer goals, beginning to plan summer activities and vacations, or taking time to nourish your body, spirit and soul. Spring always brings a sense of renewal and change. It is a time to reflect on all that has passed and to consider what may come. I am embracing spring as that opportunity for self reflection, to be followed by action as I look towards the future with a sense of renewed hope and peace. As I wonder what will happen in the world, in our country, in each of us – today – tomorrow – the next day – or next week, I am aware of the part I play in it.

I know that the world doesn’t need hatred, violence, intolerance, fear, name-calling or people seeking power for personal control or gain. What happens around us depends on us. When we choose to speak truthfully, practice self-control, be kind, live gently, be patient, exude hope, be compassionate, share our time, finances, energy and prayers, express gratitude and take risks, those things are created in the world. As we enjoy springtime possibilities, I pray that we may explore those actions, consider our choices and be bearers of good, hope-filled and healing promise for ourselves, families, communities and world. May you find and be blessing this Easter season.

Mrs. Fisher was born and raised in the Valley. She is a proud Metis woman, and an even prouder mother and wife. Mrs. Fisher was honoured in recognition of her work with youth in the Valley last Saturday.

“Children are our future,” she says. “Every kid deserves a happy and healthy life, but some of them don’t get that, and those are the ones I gravitate towards.”

Mrs. Fisher has three children of her own, but more than 35 youth have lived with her and her husband at some point, through both traditional and non-traditional foster care. As a career, she devoted her time to working with youth. She began as a special education teacher, and then served as an Aboriginal support worker for 20 years. Mrs. Fisher often helps youth by connecting them with their culture.

“Sometimes, she supports chil-

dren who don’t even know that they need help,” says Sherry Doerr, a representative from Summit Youth Centre. “Each youth she helps in a unique way. For example, if a youth feels lost on their path, she’ll help them make moccasins to guide them.”

While a leader among many, Mrs. Fisher says that she wouldn’t have been there without the support of her children and husband. “I feel like they should be right beside me (being honoured).”

I read All My Puny Sorrows a few years ago—it is a beautiful, heartbreaking story, one that I definitely recommend (find it in our collection).

As a lifetime library lover, I think about this quote a lot, and how it perfectly captures what it is that makes libraries so incredible and important. Libraries function on the basis of trust and promise, and in a world full of distrust and empty promises, we need libraries more than ever.

With the recent library budget cuts in Ontario, now is the time to stand up for libraries, for that good faith to stay in our communities.

Where else are you able to spend time for free, no need to buy a coffee or food (and with free wifi)? Where else do you have access to resources that can help you build a shed, play guitar, cope with grief, or that lead you to your new favourite book?

Where else can you join free programs and clubs, for all ages, to meet new people and

learn new things? What other institution operates in such good faith?

In today’s world, people are quick to dismiss the importance of libraries, often with the argument that everything is online now. But a library is so much more than books (even if the books are the best part).

We have public access computers, because not everybody has the resources for one. We have everything from a fax machine to a 3D printer, we offer tech assistance, we can help you do your taxes, we offer database services such as access to B.C. Building Codes or Ancestry.com.

Libraries are more than capable of keeping up with the modern world, if civilization continues to keep their promise to come back, so that governments can see the absolute necessity of libraries in our communities.

I love that our library is now in the Community Centre; it places that good faith right in the heart of the community, where anybody can come use our resources, read a book, or simply have a safe space to spend time without discrimination.

Libraries are the greatest, possibly most important, institutions civilization has come up with. Let us continue to keep our promise to you, to continue to operate in such good faith— we just need your promise to visit the library and to come back.
