Birdy dinosaurs

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com “Are dinosaurs extinct?” asked Dr. Lisa Buckley, a scientist who studies dinosaurs by studying modern birds.

While the “non-birdy dinosaurs” are extinct, she said birds are “not just descendants of dinosaurs, but they are in fact a different type of fancy, fluffy dinosaurs.”

Hummingbirds, chickadees, robins and ravens might look different than their ancient ancestors, but they’re still meat-eating dinosaurs, she said.

“Hummingbirds are dinosaurs. I mean they’re kind of on a sugar rush but they’re still dinosaurs. The DNA of tyrannosaurus rex is in there somewhere. If you’ve ever seen hummingbirds fight at a feeder...” Dr. Buckley trailed off in a laugh. “Theropods are still alive and kicking and cranky sometimes.”

Dr. Buckley will be in the Valley for Wings Over The Rockies to teach bird and dinosaur enthusiasts what scientists can learn about extinct creatures by studying modern birds.

“I look at present-day birds and I see what sort of information I can get from the present-day bird footprints and then see how I can apply that,” she said over the phone as gulls squawked behind her.

Dr. Buckley collects plaster samples of bird footprints to take back to the lab to study and compare against other birds across history. Because birds have such fragile skeletons and each only leave one behind, she said it’s easier to study them based on the “tons and tons and tons of footprints” left on the ground.

During her walk, she will take guests into habitats in hopes of seeing shorebirds, identifying them and demonstrating how to collect plaster samples of their footprints.

“Our modern birds provide a living laboratory,” she said. “It’s always worth taking a look at what the modern critters are doing because animals haven’t really changed all that much in their behaviour... Extinct animals still have the same needs and drives that our present-day animals do: so feeding, staying alive, mating, nesting.”

She pointed to a study she was involved in where modern bird behaviour offered an explanation of ancient dinosaur markings.

“These very interesting scrape marks were left in the sandstone and we knew that they were made by a large meat-eating dinosaur,” she said.

But scientists didn’t know why the dinosaurs left those marks until Dr. Buckley and her collaborators realized the scrapes were similar to those male plover birds

She said male plovers make ceremonial nest scrapes as if to tell prospective partners: ‘Look at this wonderful nest that I could build for you.’ After assessing how well the nest was made, the lady bird decides whether to mate with her suitor.

The bird scrapes looked like miniature versions of those left by meat-eating dinosaurs. Without studying modern birds, she said the connection may have been missed.

“Extinct animals weren’t weird. They weren’t strange.

They weren’t out of the ordinary,” she said. “They really weren’t different from the animals that we see nowadays.

It helps people connect with the past a bit more and learn that we’re part of a much-larger story than the one we’re just experiencing now, which is a tiny, tiny little blip in the entire existence of the planet so it’s good to understand that entire story.”

Invermere expenses increasing in 2019 budget

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com The District of Invermere is poised to bump up your taxes, and has approved raising your water and garbage collection rates.

The proposed tax increases are for taxes to rise by $50 for the average single-family home and by $125 for the average business.

The water flat rate will go up by $50 and the consumption fee by 10 cents per cubic metre. The residential garbage collection fee will go up by $32.

This means the set costs for the average single-family home would go up $132 a year. Adding in the costs for the Athalmer land purchase, living in Invermere could cost an extra $236 annually if the tax increase earns Council’s support.

“Those costs are all going up as they are in a lot of other communities,” said Mayor Al Miller. “We are trying to keep that part as competitive as possible but at the same time looking after the necessary items such as infrastructure and such properly.”

Some items – such as a new trail and a sidewalk on the east side of the Columbia Valley Centre – that are included as recommendations in the financial plan came

from residents.

“We were listening. We went out to the coffee meetings. We went out to the general public,” said Mayor Miller. “We tried to bring (their concerns) back and incorporate those into our plan. And if it wasn’t something that was already in our works budget or capital plan or whatever, like newer ideas, then they were set up as recommendations.”

One of the recommendations was to hire a leisure-services manager in part to have more recreational opportunities at the Columbia Valley Centre. Cortney Pitts, the events coordinator, will be taking on both roles and moving into a permanent position.

This past week, April 15th through April 21st, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 57 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, April 15th, an Invermere resident called police to report an intoxicated friend was yelling and breaking things in their house. An officer attended and arrested the male for mischief in order to prevent the situation from escalating. The male was held in cells until he was sober.

• On Tuesday, April 16th, a resident near Greenwood Road and 62 Mile Road in Edgewater reported someone had driven through his seeded pasture, causing substantial damage. Police continue to investigate this mischief.

• On Thursday, April 18th at about 3:30 a.m., the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta called police to report he had been involved in a motor vehicle incident and had gone to the Invermere hospital to be checked over. The driver lost control of his vehicle on Highway 93/95 near Canal Flats and went into the ditch. The driver sustained minor injuries.

• On Thursday, April 18th at approximately 10:30 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were advised of a hunting accident on Hawke Road between Invermere and Fairmont Hot Springs. Two men were hunting together when . . . ‘Invermere’ from 3

“It’s the last piece of waterfront property... available to the town to purchase,” Mayor Miller said, adding that there was “overwhelming support” to proceed.

The DOI received 111 responses to oppose the purchase in an alternate approval process. It would have required 239 objectors to stop the sale or force Council to hold a referendum.

Trail connection The DOI is going through an engineering process and working with the provincial Ministry of Transportation to connect the Invermere trail system with

an accidental discharge of a rifle occurred, striking one of the men in the shoulder. The injured man was transported to the hospital for his injury. Police continue to investigate the incident.

• On Thursday, April 18th, a resident from Canal Flats called police to report a theft of fuel from his vehicle. The owner noticed fuel leaking from his tank and, upon closer inspection, he found a hole in his tank and suspected someone may have drilled the hole. No other reports of this nature have been received in the area.

• On Friday, April 19th at 5:30 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a break and enter at the Red Apple store in Invermere. The suspect(s) gained entry to the business by throwing a rock through the front door window. Items were seized from the business for forensic examination. Anyone with any information about this break and enter is asked to the contact the Columbia Valley RCMP. • On Saturday, April 20th at 5 p.m., police received a report of quads being driving erratically on the streets in Edgewater. Police conducted patrols but were not able to locate the individuals on the quads. The following day police returned to Edgewater to conduct further patrols and located tire marks which appeared to be from an ATV doing donuts on the public roadway. Parked in the driveway of the nearby residence were two ATV’s. The resident of the property was spoken to about safe operation of ATV’s. the Markin-MacPhail Westside Legacy Trail.

“We have a couple obstacles there,” Mayor Miller said, adding that the entrance to CastleRock is so close to Westside Road that the DOI may need to shift the road to the east to allow for safe access on the west side.

“It’s going to happen. We’re going to move forward with it, but we’re just working first on the engineering,” he said.

He is hoping the trail connection will be completed this summer and will come in around $400,000.

“We want to be a part of that connection and get it joined in with the rest of our trail system,” he said.

That is probably the most important part of the whole thing is that when youth come to the youth centre, it’s a safe place. A place where they can be themselves and not judged.”

Ms. Doerr is very hopeful that many of the participants over the past 25 years will come to the May 4th celebration.

“I really hope that we can get some of our former people behind us and we can get a very good response to our event,” she said.

Summer brown bags The Summit Youth Centre, in collaboration with the Columbia Valley Food Bank, is launching a summer brown bag lunch program. Youth will be collecting snacks through snack drives from now until the end of June. Youth will deliver to food-insecure households from Brisco to Canal Flats through the summer. This outreach campaign by the youth will include collecting, sorting, and delivering snacks at a central drop point in each community. Phone or email Summit if you want to help. Ms. Prichard, who also works at the food bank, says there are currently 269 children and youth (aged 0-18) registered with the local food bank.

The Project Take Flight Wildlife Rehabilitation Society – which became a registered non-profit group earlier this year after 25 years of service– is collecting snacks for Jack, who devours around three beadyeyed meals a day. The hungry owl has already tossed back around 600 mice while he’s been in care.

“We do prefer dead,” said mouse-collector Dana Strachan, adding that the special presents cats leave for their humans and mice caught in traps are welcome, traps and all.

“We’re more than willing to take them out of the traps,” Ms. Strachan said. “We’ll take pretty much any size or anything.”

By Leah Scheitel Special to the Pioneer The Summit Youth Centre, an organization dedicated to helping youth in the Columbia Valley, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this May. Started in 1994, the group is hoping that former youth participants, workers and board members will help in the celebration of its silver anniversary.

The fundraising party is set for Saturday, May 4th, where they will host their annual “Local Celebrity” evening dinner. This year the guest of honour is Debra Fisher. Sherry Doerr, chair of the board for the Summit Youth Centre, comments she is a very worthy guest of honour.

“Twenty years she has spent as an Aboriginal youth worker with the high school in collaboration. On top of that, she was often a foster parent before, with 35 kids and I know hundreds more who she has counselled,” said Ms. Doerr. “She is extraordinary.”

The Youth Centre has also invited Tom Jackson to come and speak at the event and help in the celebrations.

For the past quarter of a century, the Summit Youth Centre has kept its focus on local youth, a goal they will carry with them into the future. Kelsey Prichard, centre director, says they offer multiple resources and programs for the kids, including music lessons, cooking classes, meal preparation, budgeting, job search help, interview preparation, and even drone racing. They also have social awareness programs, such as Box City, to teach the youth about homelessness. Along with planning programming that will be beneficial for the youth, they also try to listen to what the youth would like to learn about and what they feel they need at the moment.

“Some of the youth are recognizing the importance of mental health and want to learn a little bit more of that so that is what we are moving into and what we are focusing on for the end of this school year and for the rest of next school year,” explained Ms. Prichard, saying the training will cover healthy sleeping habits, Naloxone training for emergency intervention and overall mental health and wellness.

As board chair, Sherry Doerr said listening to the youth has always been one of the goals for the organization, at least since she has been involved since November 2010.

“We maintain our focus on the youth and what we think they need. Sometimes it’s what we think they need and other times they come to us and tell us what they need instead and that is what is most important – listening to what their needs are,” she said. “The youth

Get vaccinated

Get vaccinated.

The Government of British Columbia has launched a Measles Immunization Catch-Up Program in the wake of measles outbreaks occuring around the globe, including 27 confirmed cases as of April 16th in B.C. Eight per cent of British Columbians who responded to a recent poll still believe there is a connection between vaccines and autism. Twenty per cent believe vaccinations are encouraged because it is a way for pharmaceutical companies to make money, and 14 per cent believe vaccines prevent people from building up their own natural defenses to disease.

According to a press release from Insights West, which conducted the poll, “. . . a sizeable number (23%) of B.C. residents feel doubtful towards vaccines. A small but significant portion of British Columbians (9%) could be considered to be true anti-vaxxers, as 3% of B.C. residents feel that they have significant doubts or issues with vaccinations, and choose not to vaccinate themselves or their children (or would not if they were to have children), and a further 6% state they have doubts or issues with vaccinations and are selective on whether they choose to vaccinate or not. Just over 1-in-10 (14%) of British Columbians believe in vaccinations overall and decide to vaccinate themselves and their families to be on the safe side, but still have doubts about them.”

When John Enders and colleagues developed the measles vaccine in 1963, I doubt any of them thought that 55 years later, people would still need to be convinced to take something that protects from and prevents the spread of illness. There are some individuals who, for various medical reasons, cannot get vaccinated. If you choose to not vaccinate, you not only put yourself at risk, you increase the odds of someone getting deathly ill who cannot make the choice to get vaccinated. The fake science that anti-vaxxers glug down is hogwash. Yet people continue to drink the swill that vaccines cause autism, or vaccines are a big pharma scam, or other such nonsense.

The aburd list goes on and on but is not worth the time to list.

April 24-30th is World Immunization Week. If you chose not to vaccinate yourself or your own children, please reconsider. Interior Health has made the process simple: catch-up program includes offering the vaccine through school-based immunization clinics, drop-in clinics at public health centres, and through community pharmacists. And if you choose not to vaccinate, I’ll just leave you with this list offered by Interior Health on the delights of getting measles: “Measles is a serious illness that is caused by a virus. It is highly contagious and spreads easily through the air. Complications from measles can include pneumonia, inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), convulsions (seizures), deafness, brain damage, and death.”

Play safe this season Dear Editor: Accidents can happen in a split second. As the weather warms up and kids spend more time outside, I encourage parents, teachers and community group leaders to help pass on The War Amps PLAYSAFE message.

I grew up in The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program and have met kids who have lost limbs in accidents. As a leg amputee, I also know what it is like to live without a limb.

Members of CHAMP are warning kids to spot the danger before they play in a new video, PLAYSAFE: Don’t Let It Happen to You. They share their stories about how they lost their limbs in accidents and stress the importance of staying away from “mean machines” like lawnmowers, boats, cars and farm equipment.

Concerns on Columbia Lake Dear Editor: The ice went off Columbia Lake recently, revealing the beautiful and complex ecosystem that we rely on for many things including; drinking water, recreation and wildlife habitat. The ecosystem isn’t the only complex thing about the lake, so are the jurisdictional issues. Local, First Nation, Provincial and Federal governments share dominion, and compliance questions can be difficult to navigate.

Although the regulations regarding the placement of docks and buoys on the lake are clear, when it comes to enforcing those regulations, things can get confusing.

In the last few years, private docks and buoys have begun to increase on the western shoreline of Columbia Lake. While it may seem as though these structures have little to no impact on the wellbeing of the waterbody, they do in fact leave a mark.

Buoys, when not weighted correctly, or when not removed during the winter, can drag across the bottom of the lake and cause damage to habitat. Docks can similarly disrupt habitat as they are placed on the foreshore - an area that many species call home. When abandoned, the materials used to build docks wash up on land and congest the shoreline. Debris from these docks include: Styrofoam; wood, some of which is treated or creosote soaked; tires; ropes; barrels; and more.

To maintain the health of Columbia Lake it is important that the necessary provincial and federal approvals/permits are obtained, local zoning bylaws are followed and the established construction guidelines (including using environmentally friendly materials) for docks and buoys are followed. To minimize negative impact, dock and buoys should be removed for the winter, and when no longer in use, they should be removed and prop-

erly disposed of, rather than just left along the shoreline.

We all can ask for implementation of the rules and regulations that do exist for the foreshore and open waters of our lakes. The Columbia Lake Stewardship Society (CLSS) has spoken to the Regional Distrcit of East Kootenay (RDEK) and the Provincial Government, even filing a complaint through Front Counter BC. No enforcement action was taken. The reasons cited were: uncertainty over what power different levels of government have, low priority issue, not enough enforcement personnel, and insufficient budget.

CLSS also expressed our concerns to our RDEK regional director, our local MLA, and our MP. They all expressed support for the health of the lake but were unable to provide help as to how to enforce existing regulations.

Last spring, the CLSS devoted 50 volunteer hours and removed two trailer loads of litter from only 1 km of shoreline.

We estimate that it will take another 200 volunteer hours to clear the remainder of western shoreline. Another clean-up is scheduled for Sunday, April 28th. Find the details on our website at ColumbiaLakeSS.ca and come pitch in!

We realize that this is a complex issue and will require multi-level government cooperation to resolve. We can do our part by abiding by the regulations, helping with clean-up initiatives and asking our government leaders for enforcement. The health of our lakes requires us to work together, ensuring our impact is a positive one.

What started off as a redneck party has turned into a major annual event in Canal Flats.

The third annual Mowers and Music event takes place at the Flats RV and Campground each spring. It has been a remarkable growth for the event in a couple short years. The first year, coordinator Kelly Kask said, they had no idea what to expect. They hoped a handful of people would come out for a party in the Flats that included a lawnmower race, mud bog, and chili cook-off. They ended up with approximately 250 people descending on the campground for an afternoon of entertainment in 2017. Last year, it jumped to 500 people. This year, they are hoping to hit 750 redneck enthusiasts.

New this year, and sure to be an entertaining event, is belt sander racing. Wooden tracks (floor joists actually) will provide the race course for belt sanders. Contestants are free to alter and decorate them for the delight of viewers. Other belt sander races show sanders that have been made to look like trucks, disco balls and clowns.

The chili cook-off includes simmering pots of tame tastes right to knock-your-teeth-out strength stews. This year, Mr. Kask says, a contestant is planning to enter the first ever vegan chili in the cook-off. The chef has thrown the ladle down, betting on her meatless chili for this year’s tasty winner.

“She says she will win the competition, and has no problem competing against the meat,” Mr. Kask said.

Other chili offerings, he confirmed, have always been ‘meat-o-plenty’.

The lawnmower race is what started this whole event.

Last year in the adult competition, Mr. Kask said someone even installed a motorcycle engine in one of the lawnmowers.

“It was a hoot,” he recalled, describing how the driver made it into the finals but blew a turn and crashed into the tulips.

In 2018 they added a kid’s competition, with a lawnmower donated by BID Group. While the lawnmower burnt in a fire on the site of the Columbia Lake Technology Centre, Mr. Kask confirms they have just bought

another one in time for the race. Kids, aged 9-16, need to pre-register for the race. All the safety equipment and the mower will be provided.

Bring your appetite to the party. Steve the Weinerman will be handing out free hot dogs and J-2 beef sliders from 12-3 p.m., thanks to funding from the Columbia Basin Trust. The party continues with food trucks on site right through the afternoon and evening. Food trucks confirmed so far include a burger truck, a donut truck, and even a pierogy truck.

Two bands: Boots and Hoots, and The Rhinestones, are scheduled to perform in the evening on the outdoor gazebo stage. The Rhinestones, described Mr. Kask, “play the accordion and can sing like the devil,” while the Boots and Hoots are a “honky-tonk, super fun band.”

Len Bond Organizers are strategizing on the best way to pay tribute to Len Bond at this year’s Mowers and Music. Mr. Bond was a Canal Flats local who passed away recently, and helped to make the Mowers and Music event what it is today. Mr. Kask says it was Mr. Bond’s enthusiastic response to the event, including building some soupedup lawnmowers in secret, that helped build anticipation and excitement for the first event in 2017. Mr. Bond had even invited some guys from the bathtub races in Nanaimo up for the race, “and then they (Len Bond and friends) spanked all those guys from Nanaimo,” Mr. Kask quipped.

Mr. Bond was the first one to get his lawnmower through the mud bog last year, a feat unclaimed by anyone else so far.

The third annual Mowers and Music event happens Saturday, May 4th. The chili cook-off starts at noon, with belt sander racing underway at 12:30 p.m. Youth mower race takes place at 1:30 and adult races begin at 3 p.m.

Mud bog challenge happens at 5:30 p.m. after all the lawn mower races have wrapped up. Bands hit the stage at 7 p.m., with everything wrapping up by 10 p.m.

There are limited camping spots available, so Mr. Kask urges anyone interested in parking overnight for the event to book now. To book your spot, or to register for the lawnmower race, email info@theflatsrv.com.

Students at J. A. Laird enjoyed their photography course so much that they forgot they were learning.

“It wasn’t actually school... It was fun,” said brand-new photographer Jack, who is pictured with a paper umbrella on the opposite page.

“That’s me and it was my idea and I edited it and Elliot took the photo and like collaboration,” he said, adding that another student had taken a similar photo that inspired his vision.

The students collaborated so freely that Alexandra and Keely didn’t know which of them had taken the photo of their friend Ocea, which graces page 9. Regardless of who composed the shot, they are both impressed with how well it turned out.

Asked about their favourite part of their photography lessons, the girls spoke together, sharing their reply like they shared their camera: “(It was) probably just getting to go outside and taking pictures and learning more about photography and Photoshop. That was pretty cool.”

Rebecca also appreciated learning how to take interesting photos. She and a friend were hopping the fence on their way to take pictures at the skate park when Rebecca paused to snap the sunny shot that’s in the bottom left corner of the following page.

“It’s fun learning how to take new pictures in different ways,” she said.

“Usually (the students) talk non-stop,” said teacher Tarah Armitage, but her crowded classroom was silent and filled with wide eyes as renowned local photographer Pat Morrow offered a photo-editing lesson, the last session in a four-part photography course.

“Every person sees the world a little bit differently,” Mr. Morrow told the students, encouraging them to use their cameras to show their unique perspectives on the world around them.

Elizebeth Ellen (Beth) Shymko Elizebeth Ellen (Beth) Shymko died in Kamloops on April 4 after losing a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Invermere hospital on June 6, 1953, the youngest child of Stephen and Margaret (Stoddart) Shymko.

She graduated with honours from the local high school and after moving to Kamloops worked for the Hudson’s Bay store where she was responsible for its unionization within the Steelworkers’ Union and went on to hold executive positions within the Union.

She was predeaceased by her parents and longtime partner Rocky Morrisette but leaves to grieve her son, Dan Reuters and his two children, siblings Dianna (Tritscher), David and Stan Shymko, several nieces and nephews, aunt Bernice (Stoddart) Hathaway as well as special friend/caregiver Reg Seymour.

A celebration of her life is planned for June 15 in Kamloops.

If desired, a gift in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the S.P.C.A., Kamloops branch.

CHEERS to all the caring people of the Columbia Valley who are dropping off mice and other rodents for our owls, hawks, falcons and eagles at the Invermere Veterinary Hospital.

The StrongStart facilitator will be responsible for the day to day operation of the StrongStart Program at Martin Morigeau Elementary school. This position is 4.5 hours/week.

Growing Together and StrongStart are both family programs that focus on healthy early childhood development, family engagement and school readiness for children birth to school age.

QUALIFICATIONS

✓ Be a qualified ECE with License to Practice or be registered in a recognized ECE program working towards licensing. ✓ Have experience with or an understanding of family-based program delivery. ✓ Driver’s license and a reliable vehicle. ✓ Knowledge of community services in the Windermere Valley. ✓ Personal qualities include excellent interpersonal and communication skills, the ability to work as part of a team, and to be culturally sensitive, creative and resourceful. ✓ Basic computer skills.

Aquathlon is on at Lake Windermere

By R. Lorin Inglis Lake Windermere Aquathlon If you look up the word aquathlon online, you will likely come across two very distinct definitions of the sport. One refers to an underwater wrestling event created in the former USSR in the 1980s. Outfitted with fins, mask and ankle ribbons, two daring opponents who are comfortable holding their breath underwater descend to the bottom of a pool and grapple for 30 seconds. Aside from the speedo swimwear, this does not conjure up the images of aquathlon most readers are used to. The other, and more commonly known, definition sees aquathlon as an endurance multisport event involving swimming and running. Aquathlon combines the Latin word “aqua” meaning water, to the Greek word “athlon” for a contest. So which definition is correct? With the root words taken to mean “water-contest,” it seems they both are. You can breathe easily Aquathlon wrestling has not gained much popularity outside of Europe, so no need to double check your event details if you have added an aquathlon to your summer race itinerary. The binding thread of both uses of the word aquathlon is that it conveys the notion of a struggle in the water. Endurance sports are a challenge – and that is perhaps the reason many of us take part in them.

Challenging yourself can come in many different forms. So why register for an aquathlon? Why not stick generally to sports which have names that are easier to pronounce? On a side note, just to clarify, “aquathlon” can be pronounced with or without the “l”. So, if you are announcing to your non-endurance racing friends, who undoubtedly think you are a tad bit strange for wanting to do this type of thing in the first place, that you are doing an aquathlon – rest assured, although it is awkward, you are saying it correctly!

The first compelling reason to compete in aquathlon is the beautiful simplicity of it. Purists of sport love this aspect because it eliminates the need for mechanical assistance and is all about unaided human propulsion. All swimming and running require are a pair of goggles, shoes and a strong heart. This simplicity opens the door for many athletes who may have considered triathlon but were hesitant or unable to commit to purchasing a bicycle. Cycling is a fantastic low impact sport, however, the price tag on some new triathlon bikes has the potential to raise an eyebrow on even the most seasoned enthusiast. Sticking to basics makes aquathlon a great entry point for newcomers to the sport of triathlon.

The joy of participation is not limited to the challenge. Sensation pays a huge part in endurance sports. Arguably no other activity provides more direct access to a transcendent experience than swimming and running. They are without doubt two of the most intense cardiovascular workouts available; whether induced through the body’s chemical processes, or by the psychological rewards generated by the mastery of the will, aquathlon has the potential to exhilarate the senses and reduce stress. Endorphins released by the body’s natural processes will have you feeling fantastic and ready to take on some of life’s other challenges.

Open water is perhaps one of the most challenging areas of outdoor multi-sport.

Aquathlon as an endurance sport was born from the lifeguarding competitions of the 1960s. Competitors would dash to the water from the beach and back out again in the format run, swim, run. This was a way to roll fitness and skills development into a fun and exciting afternoon at the beach. This is all great, but aside from the lifeguarding community not all of us are innately comfortable in water where the conditions are variable and, well... open! Stepping into new waters can be intimidating. Depth, currents, temperature, waves and aquatic life can all add to the anxiety of leaving the shore. You may have known a swimming instructor who, upon the mention of open water, shuddered at the thought lest a lake weed should meet with his or her toes. Name a body of water and likely someone has swum in it; from the English Channel to the Southern Ocean in the Antarctic. Although impressive, these are not really great starting out waters! Heading to a calm, relatively warm lake with little or no current and bringing along a well thought out plan is a better place to begin. Overcoming potential

Events which include open water are challenging - but it’s important to remember the environment is somewhat controlled. Race directors, when choosing swim locations, consider all the above and have done some of the homework for you. Experienced open water swimmers know that any swim begins with knowledge of the conditions they will encounter such as temperature, currents... (or icebergs, in the case of Antarctic swimmers like Lewis Pugh!) Having a plan, swimming with others and a having the company of an aid boat is all best practices of those who venture into lakes and oceans. Another way to boost confidence is to join a masters swim club or attend an open water swimming clinic in your area.

Assuming you have now put to rest a seemingly lackluster fear of lake weeds touching the feet, you might be thinking this whole swimming in open water thing is a good idea. You are correct. Swimming in open water can be a wonderful experience! In aquathlon, your open water swim is going to be followed by running rather than biking and depending on the format, you may have already run a portion of the race prior to your swim.

The transition from swimming directly to running is a little different than from swim to bike. Cycling does not tax the cardiovascular system as hard as running does.

When you exit the water in an aquathlon, it is important to find the pace that works for you and one you can maintain. It’s tempting to want to push at the beginning of the run, as the thrill of the transition can exhilarate you. But it is important to hold back a little bit and find the pace and rhythm which will allow you to have a strong finish and avoid producing too much lactate for your body to deal with. This scenario makes for a very uncomfortable run, so if you’re competitive, sometimes maintaining pace even when being passed by other runners is the mark of mental tenacity. Sticking to what you have trained for is good practice. Of course, there is value in training for adaptability as well.

If you show up to a race expecting to wear a wetsuit and the water temperature doesn’t allow for it, the ability to change the plan and have a good swim with or without a suit is an asset. Likewise, when running, having trained in a diversity of conditions, such as elevation, temperature and wind are going to prepare you for whatever happens on the big day. Taking an open approach to training will produce a more well-rounded athlete!

If you are at the point in the year where you are looking around and thinking about the races you might like to take part in, adding an aquathlon onto the roster is a great idea. Triathletes starting out with their first race will find value in this easily accessible yet challenging format. Old pros with years of starts will appreciate the new challenge and opportunity for diversified competition.

Aquathlon as an endurance sport, rather than underwater wrestling, is widely known today in its various adaptations of distance, format, and venue. There is something for everyone.

This year is an exciting time to be involved with aquathlon. The Lake Windermere Aquathlon Society will be hosting a unique event this year, combining open water swimming in one of B.C.’s most pristine lakes, with a trail run through the wooded hills of the Columbia Valley. This unique event also offers a trail-run-only option, kids race and relay. In addition, this event will be offering one male and one female qualifying spot (aquathlon long course only), in each age group, to represent Canada at the 2020 ITU World Multisport Championships. Early bird pricing for this event lasts until April 30th!

Aquathlon is one of the most challenging sports in the world and great a measure of cardiovascular health. Getting out into open water, enjoying the road, trails, sun, and fresh air make this a great choice for anyone looking to connect with nature.

Put your sword away

By Pastor Murray Wittke Valley Christian Assembly It was midnight. Jesus had been praying alone. A group of soldiers led by Judas arrives. There’s a brief conversation, a hurried kiss and Jesus is arrested. In the confusion and semi-darkness Peter swings his sword wildly and someone falls to the ground screaming.

Blood spurts from where their ear had been. The soldiers draw their swords ready to kill. But before things get out of hand, Jesus touches the man’s ear healing it instantly.

Everything about this story makes perfect sense. Peter did what we all tend to do when we feel threatened.

He thought “It’s time to fight” and grabbing a sword he struck out hitting and hurting. Fighting comes so naturally. Hit back! Get even! Make someone pay! But our an-

ger and God’s righteousness generally move in opposite directions. The clenched fists and angry voices of Jesus’ followers do not produce the righteousness God desires.

In fighting to make things better, Peter made them worse.

Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword away! For all who draw the sword will die by the sword.” He’s saying violence begets violence, trust in God. Brute force doesn’t advance Christ’s kingdom. Love does. Sometimes when you follow Jesus, you have to lose in order to win. Jesus would save the world not by shedding the blood of his enemies, but by allowing his own to be shed. Jesus said “Don’t you realize I could ask my Father for twelve legions of angels and he’d send them instantly?” He had the power at his disposal to crush his enemies but refrained from using it. Instead he used it to heal those hurt by his followers. He still does today.

Peter was ready to fight. But Jesus says “Put your sword away” and heads into the night. There would be no bloody revolution. No violent resistance. Instead Jesus went to the cross, forgave his enemies and died. But as he goes, one man rubs the side of his head and remembers the healing touch of Jesus. Opposition is best met with a compassionate helping hand. Put your sword away!

Living Lakes Canada to celebrate many milestones at world wetlands conference Submitted by Living Lakes Canada Living Lakes Canada is heading to Valencia, Spain for the 15th International Living Lakes Conference on May 7-9, 2019.

The conference, titled the “World Congress for Wetland and Lake Restoration”, will mark two other milestones: the 20th anniversary of the international Living Lakes network, and 15 years since an International Living Lakes Conference was held in Fairmont Hot Springs, B.C., which led to the formation of Living Lakes Canada in 2010.

“We’re very excited to be participating in this international wetlands event.

We are able to do so thanks to the interest of Kicking Horse Coffee, which was a sponsor and participant in the Fairmont conference 15 years ago and has provided support for increased stewardship for our local wetlands,” said Living Lakes Canada Executive Director Kat Hartwig.

The 2004 International Living Lakes Conference in Fairmont showcased the Columbia River headwaters and Columbia Wetlands, a RAMSAR-designated Wetland of International Importance. The CEO of Kicking Horse Coffee, Elana Rosenfeld, addressed the conference theme of engaged corporate and social responsibility for the environment. The CEOs of Mountain Equipment Coop and Unilever Canada also spoke about the significance of the Columbia River headwaters and wetlands on a global scale.

“It feels like we have come full circle in a way,” said Heather Leschied, Operations Director for Living Lakes Canada, “so it is quite meaningful that Living Lakes Canada will be travelling to Spain, not only to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the International Living Lakes network, but 15 years since the International Living Lakes Conference was held in Canada and was the inspiration for all of our Living Lakes Canada water stewardship work. These conferences support engaged, passionate people to share how their contributions to the health of watersheds are making a

difference, and are incredibly motivating and impactful.”

Five of Living Lakes Canada’s team members will be attending the Valencia conference and highlights will include visiting local wetland restoration sites and connecting with Living Lakes International partners to share best community-based water stewardship practices.

Living Lakes Canada will reciprocate by presenting on some of the exciting work currently underway in the Columbia Basin and across Canada: • The national stream health assessment protocol, the Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network (CABIN), and testing new eDNA technology developed by the University of Guelph.

• Groundwater monitoring and aquifer mapping in the Columbia Basin.

• Projects that collaborate or are in partnership with First Nations, academia, community members and all levels of government to restore and establish wetlands in the headwaters of the Columbia Basin, in Canada.

• How the transboundary Columbia Basin water monitoring collaborative will make water monitoring information open, accessible and available for engagement, education and management decisions in support of watershed stewardship.

Several of the Living Lakes Canada team members will be staying after the conference to join Living Lakes International on a trip to Sierra de Mariola and the ecological cellar as well as a trip to Marjal dels Moros Coastal Wetland. The team hopes to bring back lessons from this experience and integrate it into the work they are doing in Canada.

“Having the opportunity to showcase our work to international partners is invaluable. Our team works so hard and is so passionate about the change we are making through our projects,” said Living Lakes Canada Program Coordinator Avery Deboer-Smith. “We are also looking forward to learning from our international partners and creating new relationships that will advance Living Lakes Canada.”
