Mural honours athletes from Ktunaxa community at new rec centre

By Katie Watt intern@columbiavalleypioneer.com In the Columbia Valley Recreation Centre, the walls have come to life.

A kaleidoscope of painted faces and intricate designs create a flowing mural across all four walls of the main entrance foyer. The project, designed by a team of three, was created to recognize the athletic achievements of the Ktunaxa community.

Lillian Rose, project curator; Jason Botkin, muralist; and Dawn Saunders-Dahl, arts administrator, are the members of the three person design team behind the project.

“This wall is a tribute to the generations of Ktunaxa and Akisqnuk people who have been involved in athletic pursuits,” says Ms. Rose.

The mural honours athletic achievement in a unique way through visual storytelling. The faces of approximately 60 athletes spanning six generations from the Ktunaxa community are being painted on the wall.

The project aims to “honour the athletes of the past by supporting the ones of today and tomorrow,” says Bryan Armstrong, head coordinator of the recreation centre.

Each face in the mural will have a name attributed to it, and it will “invite a lot of careful reading,” says Mr. Botkin.

To make the mural come to fruition, the team had to first collect images of the athletes within the community. These images would then be used as a reference for the portraits painted in the mural. This hunt for photos was one of the most challenging yet most rewarding aspects of the project.

“You just assume that everyone has photos and that it’s something to be easily collated, but that hasn’t been the case in this community,” says Mr. Botkin.

“We’re finding that people are very humble. We have people who have been scouted by the NHL, and when you go their house and ask them what they’ve done they tell you that nothing comes to mind,” says Ms. Rose.

Another issue that arose was that some of the athletes in the community don’t have high quality photos of themselves. To solve this problem, however, local photographers, Lisa and

Robert Ede from Redneck Hippy Studios, helped grow the project’s image library by taking photos of the athletes.

With the help of the photographer pair, the team has managed to gather a strong collection of images that feature Ktunaxa athletes from the 1880’s to present day.

Ms. Rose’s positive mentality has allowed her to step around the project’s hurdles.

“I’m part of the community here, they’re my family, and I’m their biggest fan. Part of being Ktunaxa is that you don’t lift yourself up over anybody else, but the best part of my job is that I get to do that for them,” she says.

While the project honours athletic achievement, the team of three sees it as symbolizing much more than that.

“What I find really unique about the project is that it’s open to the whole community. It’s not only here for the Nation. It’s fantastic, and it’s another way to bridge that gap between communities, and between art and sports,” says Ms. Saunders-Dahl. “There’s also a lot of potential for it to be used as an educational tool as well.”

Mr. Botkin put a considerable amount of thought and work into the design of the mural itself. Every aspect of the artwork has meaning behind it. At the centre of the mural is the face of a past Ktunaxa chief, Louis Arbel, whose face is set in the trunk of a large tree. From there, the branches and roots spread from the tree and encompass the walls of the room like a bird’s nest. The faces of the athletes are positioned between the branches, with the members from the oldest generation being placed closest to the trunk. The mural also contains many images from the Ktunaxa’s creation story, and has references to residential schools as well.

The piece will be open to public viewing when the Columbia Lake Recreation Centre opens Thursday, April 18th.

“When people see it, it’s like there’s an instant bond between what’s happening on the wall and themselves,” says Ms. Saunders-Dahl.

“A taste of Italy made in Invermere”

• On Monday, April 1st, a resident on Rivercrest Road in Radium Hot Springs reported his Landrover had been stolen from his residence overnight. The vehicle was recovered later in the day in Fort Steele. Police continue to investigate.

• On Monday, April 1st at 5:50 p.m., a hit and run occurred in the parking lot of a business on Laurier Street in Invermere. A witness reported seeing a black hatchback hit a Toyota then drive away. After viewing surveillance video footage police were able to identify the driver of the suspect vehicle. The driver of the black hatchback was served a violation ticket for failing to remain at the scene of an accident and driving without due care.

• On Tuesday, April 2nd at 4 p.m., Columbia Valley

RCMP received a report of a transport truck passing vehicles unsafely and forcing traffic in both directions to pull to the side of the road. An officer located and stopped the suspect transport truck on Highway 93/95 near Invermere. The driver of the transport truck was served a violation ticket for passing unsafely, passing when meeting an oncoming vehicle and driving without due care.

• On Thursday, April 4th at about 4:30 p.m., police received a report of a possible impaired driver in a red Pontiac Grand Prix near Edgewater. An officer located the suspect vehicle in Edgewater and, while speaking to the driver, the officer observed signs of alcohol impairment.

The driver submitted to a breath demand which resulted in a fail. As a result, the driver was served a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his vehicle was impounded for thirty days.

• On Saturday, April 6th at 8:40 a.m., a single vehicle collision was reported on Highway 93 near Simpson River in Kootenay National Park. The driver of a red Honda Civic had lost control of her vehicle and gone into the ditch. The driver was not injured.

New recruits with the Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Service got more than they bargained for during their training session Saturday, April 6th as a fire broke out during their practice.

“We were in the middle of training when the call came in, so the new recruits were able to head out into the field and watch our crew go through an actual response. It gave them a really great example of the principles they’ve been learning about and see those principles in action,” says Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Chief Jim Miller.

The fire broke out in a large single detached garage on Ridge Crescent in the Timber Ridge 1 subdivision. Ten firefighters from the Windermere Fire An unattended campfire was one of three callouts for area Department and two engines responded to the call fire crews over the last two weeks.

Market parks in new spot

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Invermere Farmers and Artists Market will sprout up in a new location this year.

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 71 Windermere District, which has run the Invermere Farmers and Artists Market since council handed over the authority in 2015, was turned down last month when they asked Council for permission to move the market.

At the following Council meeting on Wednesday, April 3rd, Ken Carlow, the Legion’s finance officer who helps run the market, said: “We’re requesting reconsideration.”

With 81 per cent of those surveyed in favour of moving from 6th Avenue into the Lakeview Parking Lot behind the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena and with advantages such as taking up fewer parking stalls and freeing up 6th Avenue for emergency access, he said: “We believe there is a good reason to support the move.”

Mr. Carlow also said the popular market needs more breathing room for shoppers to mingle and see all of the booths.

One vendor agreed, saying, “when it congests too much, people aren’t shopping at your booth.”

Two vendors who opposed the move at the previous council meeting continued to voice their disapproval.

One called the Legion’s ethics into question, leading both the gallery and Mayor Al Miller to interrupt and insist that views be shared respectfully. . . . ‘Multipe’ from 4 just after 2:30 p.m.

“The crew did an amazing job today,” adds Chief Miller. “Not only were they able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures, they were able to save the garage and possibly some of the valuable contents inside.”

A boat being stored within the garage sustained significant damage after its tarp caught fire.

While a more detailed investigation will be completed over the next few days, the fire is not suspicious in nature and is believed to be caused by an electrical issue.

Scott Flowitt of RFE Alarms called in the fire after an alarm in the garage was triggered. As his company holds a key for the unit, he went in to see why the motion sensor that had gone off.

“I was the one on-site that went to investigate,” says Mr. Flowitt, adding he borrowed a garden hose from a neighbouring house and sprayed down the

“A lot of people don’t like change. I get that every time I change a department at my store (Home Hardware),” he said, adding that Invermere has “a tremendous farmers’ market” and he only sees it getting better under the Legion’s continued direction.

“I’m very enthused that they’re still running it and still going strong,” he said.

With councillor Kayja Becker excusing herself from the vote as she is connected to a vendor booth and councillor Ute Juras changing her vote in light of the degree of vendor support, Council unanimously decided to allow the move to proceed.

After the meeting, Mr. Carlow said: “We’ll work hard to make sure (the market) continues to be successful.” outside while he waited for the fire crew to arrive onscene.

On Tuesday, April 2nd, Fairmont Fire responded to an out of control grass fire near Columbia Ridge.

“The fire appears to have been lit and left before escaping. When we arrived neighbours were working on the fire with garden hoses and rakes and did a good job of containing it,” says Chief Jim Miller. “There is no excuse for leaving a fire or for lighting a fire without taking the proper safety precautions,” stresses Chief Miller.

He commended the fast action of neighbours and quick crew response to conain what could have been a “much more serious situation.”

Later that same evening, Windermere firefighters responded when an abandoned campfire spread on the Akiqnuk reserve. The fire was spotted by a passerby who stayed on scene until Windermere firefighters arrived and doused the flames.

of Watermain Flushing The municipality will be flushing its community water system for the next 6 weeks. This program, carried out twice yearly, is necessary to maintain the quality of our water supply. There may be some short interruptions in the water service and temporary discoloration of water as a result of the sediment and organic materials that are being flushed from the water mains. By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com We have a large contingent of dedicated young athletes in the Columbia Valley, striving in their chosen sports to every day do better, push harder, and reach new goals.

Three gymnasts from local club Glacier Peaks Gymnastics are headed off to provincials today (see story, page 12). The coach told the Pioneer this is the first time ever for the club to have a team off to provincials - a significant feat in itself, and we wish them all the best.

In curling, Invermere’s Tyler Powell and his team played strong games all week at the U18 nationals, taking home a silver on Sunday, April 7th from the high-level competition (see story, page 8). What an achievement!

The Windermere Valley Minor Hockey Association held their awards night last week, recognizing the teamwork, dedication, and sportsmanship demonstrated by minor hockey players throughout the season.

In March, our minor hockey Rockies brought their hometown spirit and grit to provincial championships.

The Bantam team won the first B.C. Provincials win for the Columbia Vally in 22 years. The Midget team packed home a banner too for their provincial win against Creston. The Bantams also brought home the Fair Play trophy, awarded to the team that displayed the best sportsmanship on and off the ice throughout the tournament.

As great as it is to have the Rockies win first place, it is even better knowing that their conduct did the Valley proud.

Well done athletes, on not only achieving your dreams, but on doing your community a good service by representing the Columbia Valley well when you go out and compete on behalf of your hometown.

Appreciating volunteers this month Dear Editor: April is Volunteer Appreciation month in Canada.

On behalf of the individuals living within the Columbia Garden Village Ivy House, we would like to offer thanks and appreciation to all those who honour us with their time.

Volunteers come to us at all ages: from the tiniest toddler to seniors living in the Garden Village to retired caregivers looking to give time and comfort in their communities.

Animal companions offer joy and quiet comfort to persons in need.

Our intergenerational children’s groups through local schools and the Little Badger’s Montessori Daycare offer joy and happiness to each senior.

Youth and experienced musicians offer their talents of playing musical instruments and singing to offer an hour of joy and happiness to those listening.

Volunteers in our communities offer their time to ride bikes for Cycling Without Age; to walk with an individual in their wheelchairs around the community to enjoy the beautiful gardens and sunshine; and to accompany people for outings.

Wonderful luncheons are offered once a month on a Thursday and a Friday for senior community inclusion and companionship from our local Legion and

Ladies Auxiliary (Edgewater, Brisco, and Radium).

Knitted cozies, warm mitts, and shoulder afghans are provided with love and dedication of time and commitment from our Happy Hands knitting group.

Other caring supplies are created and given to the hospital and seniors homes from various people in our communities who take time and patience to provide much needed items to those in need.

Spiritual faith and service are offered by many Christian organizations throughout the Columbia Valley to provide spiritual comfort, familiar hymns, and messages for the individuals in our village.

Seasonal and holiday events bring gifts of trees, plants, and the season’s greetings from various businesses and volunteers throughout our valley, providing a beautifully decorated home for our residents to enjoy.

The youth and their Jr Volunteer Supervisor who offer their time and dedication once each month to provide an afternoon of recreating and physical fitness, each one of you are valued and appreciated.

From all the folks who live in the Columbia Garden Village, their loved ones, and the staff.

Dear Editor:

New food bank building dreams closer to realization

The Columbia Valley Food Bank’s (CVFB) dream of getting a new building is coming closer to fruition. Our hope is that in the next two months we will be able to start construction of a new 1,500 square foot facility to replace our current 700 square foot home. The proposed location is adjacent to the current one, in the basement of the old library/RCMP building, across from the museum. We still need: approval from the District of Invermere (DOI) as it will be located on DOI propert;, to get permits and easements resolved; to talk with the neighbours about our plans; and to complete our financial planning.

The building will be named after Albert Cooper, who provided the Food Bank with a bequest of over $750,000 in 2014. Our hope is to spend no more than $200,000 of this amount as the investment of and return from these funds has been a major supplemental source of income for the CVFB, and is what has, during times of growing numbers of clients and increased cost for food, kept us financially sound and viable. The balance of the approximate $400,000 cost for the building we hope to have covered by grants and donations, and are very thankful to the Columbia Basin Trust which has already committed $200,000 and the Columbia Valley Community Foundation for their $5,000 grant. Other interested donors are welcome to contact us.

We would be remiss to not offer thanks to the many individuals who have helped and guided us over the past year, including Chris, Kim and Rory and the Council at the DOI, Al Miller, Chris and staff at Home Hardware for providing plans and drawings, Ken Willimont our project manager for taking us under his wing, Lawanda for providing the initial audit and plans, and the Facility Committee of Ron, Jim, Diane and Elaine. Many of our proposed contractors have offered us beneficial rates.

Besides the extra space available for shelving and storage, the new facility will have washroom facilities for staff, volunteers and clients (which are not available presently), be handicapped accessible, feature a less cramped reception area and coordinator’s office, and allow for easier assembly of the food hampers. With the additional refrigeration planned, we may be able to undertake food gleaning activities with the local grocery stores and restaurants in order to reduce food waste.

Needless to say, we are very excited about the possibilities forthcoming.

Currently, the long term plan for the building is that after completion it will be turned over to the District and they will assume the operational costs while renting it back to us at a nominal fee. Such an arrangement should ensure that the CVFB will be a viable and sustainable organization for as long the need to support individuals and families in the Valley by providing them with access to healthy food exists.

Invermere’s Tyler Powell and Team Colwell brought home the silver medal from the U18 national curling championships.

Tyler (lead), alongside Erik Colwell (skip), and Ben Morin (second) of Vernon, and Mitchell Kopytko (third) from Kamloops, won five games and only lost one in the seven-team round-robin pool leading up to the final against Ontario on Sunday, April 7th.

“Obviously losing the final was a little bit disappointing but we had a pretty good week regardless,” says Tyler. “Our goal was to make it to the playoffs. And, we thought we could win if we played really well.”

The U18 championships were held in Sherwood Park, Alberta April 2nd-7th. Tyler says it was really fun playing in a packed arena with a ton of people watching.

Team Colwell spent the season playing against great teams. While the level of play was high at the national

championships, Tyler says, “I definitely felt prepared.”

He says what he takes away from the championships is the experience of playing at such a high level.

Tyler is done now for the season, with plans to head to Calgary for university in the fall where he hopes to make it into the Canadian Juniors U21 Championships.

An era of exploration

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Dr. Rod Martin – a retired Canadian history professor who lives in Invermere a few doors down from where explorer David Thompson once set up camp – is eager to share his knowledge about Canada’s past.

He is offering a presentation on early explorers and the fur trade at Pynelogs Cultural Centre on Monday, May 6th at 7 p.m. as part of the Wings Over The Rockies festival. Dr. Martin said his area of expertise is a great fit as the theme for this year’s festival is: Go ahead... Explore.

“I like to think that I’m an explorer in the fact that I find individuals back in that early frontier era who really weren’t recognized,” he said. “My focus will be to identify and tell the audience about how these early explorers representing their countries – whether it was England or France – penetrated from the early New France area into the western territories...

Along the way they went ahead and explored and discovered.”

These historic travellers impressed him with their fortitude and perseverance as they fought against nature just to survive.

“They lived by their wits. They lived off the land. It’s not like they packed their groceries with them,” he said. “The animal

population was pretty scarce in those days but they did manage to hunt down some animals... In some cases they ended up eating their dogs because of the starvation factor.”

In other cases, the local First Nations people helped the explorers by showing them how to fish and by sharing their teachings.

As David Thompson settled in the area, he “worked and learned the culture and established the trust of the Indians and Native peoples of the area that we live in to the effect that they acted as guides for him. They knew since time immemorial what river flowed where, what lands were available,” he said.

Wilderness survival skills are for the most part lacking in modern society, he said, adding that current generations can learn a great deal from the early explorers and fur traders.

“Today do we go off the beaten path on a trail and bushwhack?” he asked. “If you were to be placed out there in the middle of nowhere – say you got lost in the bush – how would you survive?... We (can) learn from their perseverance and their ability and their wit to survive off the land.”

Three local athletes will be representing Invermere in the B.C. Gymnastics Championships this week.

Head coach Alyssa Chaykowski is proud of her team that has worked so hard to get to this goal. The three gymnasts will be competing at the Jr. Olympic Level 6 (JO6) provincials. To qualify, they needed a score of 32 out of a possible 40 points, earned at competitions in Nelson this past January and Cranbrook in March.

This is the first time at a provincial competition for Emilie Cartier, Maren Gillies, and Autumn Beaulieu as provincial competitions begin at JO6. Coach Chaykowski says the team members have been training at the gym for three hours, four times per week since September, as well as participating in a two-week summer training camp.

“To be at this level especially, you have to have the motivation, the drive, the passion for the sport,” says Coach Chaykoski.

She fosters a supportive, family atmosphere at Glacier Peaks, with gymnasts working as a team even though they compete alone.

Emilie has been in gymnastics for about nine years now and reports that she loves the challenge of the sport.

“You’ve got to get stronger and condition, and you’ve also got to go face mental blocks when you’re scared to do something,” she says.

For example, she worked on doing a back handspring on the beam for about two years, finally achieving it after a lot of hard work. It was “really cool” to finally be able to do it, she comments.

Fellow gymnast Autumn agrees, saying she likes getting new skills and overcoming fears.

Provincials happen in Port Coquitlam starting today, Thursday, April 11th. Maren says she was really happy when she found out she qualified for provincials, but is also nervous about competing against a lot of people.

About two weeks ago, I experienced the amazing opportunity of attending a five-day ski event called the CADS (Canadian Adaptive Snow Sports) fest, at Kimberly Alpine Resort (www.CADS.ski). CADS is a Canadian, nonprofit, volunteer society, providing opportunities for people with diverseabilities to experience the joy of participating, and/or competing in adaptive snow sports. For many people with diverseabilities, CADS makes a significant impact in their lives. I know for a fact that it does in mine.

In grade 7, my classmates skied each week at our magnificent local Panorama ski hill. I had always wondered “what fun thing would I do instead?” My mom’s motto is “everything always works out”, and it rings true in so much of my life.

All the grade 7’s were going skiing. The day before they started, I was told a certified sit ski instructor was willing and eager to come to Panorama with me. It was unbelievable how fast it all came together.

After I finished my first trip down the mountain, I had my found my new favourite sport. I remember thinking how cool it was that I was on common ground with my classmates, not on the sidelines, rather skiing with them.

The best part of my ski journey is the people I share it with. It started with an amazing family: Catrien Dainard, Gee, Willam and Nick De Ruyter; a strong and big-hearted group who will do anything for anybody.

Those Panorama ski trips were among the most exciting times on snow I’ve ever experienced.

The next year, my team began developing a local adaptive ski program called PASS (Panorama Adaptive Snow Sports) for people with diverseabilities to come to Panorama to ski every Sunday. Each spring, we said goodbye to previous athletes and volunteers, and welcomed in new ones with open arms. The equipment keeps building as well. The PASS program includes everybody with a diverseability. PASS is fun, inclusive, and in competition with no one. Our athletes are so excited to ski; they can hardly stay seated in their wheelchairs.

ing to skiing whilst holding onto one pole with the help of my determined instructors, the Wrajez’s, to the amazing CADS fest. I see continuous progress with my skiing, and it’s all thanks to the Dainard (De Ruyter) family, and the rest of the committed volunteers who come every Sunday. They are as excited about their students’ progress as we, the skiers, are.

The March week-long CADS fest was a perfect way to celebrate my ski journey: a social week full of fun in the snow and sun. I had three kind-hearted, super fun instructors to ski with, and after my lessons, I got to hang out and enjoy the quaint little town of Kimberley with my mom.

At the end of it all, I was surprised by being awarded the national CADS award for adaptive skier of year.

Wow! I was so thrilled and honoured! What a way to end the week, especially being able to celebrate it with my family and ski team.

I am so fortunate to have had this amazing ski journey. None of it could have happened without the support of Panorama ski hill and the all the dedicated PASS volunteers. I cannot thank you enough. It was a fantastic season, and I can’t wait for what’s in store on the slopes for everyone next year.

“The minute you think you know everything, you shouldn’t be doing it anymore. There’s new technology every day, so keeping up with that is huge,” he said.

Walker’s Repair Centre has been doing a great deal of reflashing work in newer vehicles with computer systems. As Mr. Bidinger put it, “Basically you download updated software. It’s like an update on your iPhone. It corrects certain issues using better operating speed.”

“When your check-engine light or something like that comes on, a lot of times it’s a software issue, like a problem with the way that they’ve programmed it initially, so they come up with an update to correct that condition. Just replacing a part isn’t always going to solve the problem. A lot of times it can be just as simple as a computer reflash,” he said.

While he’s seen many preventable issues from drivers who didn’t get their vehicles checked out before their grand adventures, he said that in most cases a little pre-planning now is all it would take to avoid a tricky situation later on.

“Have (your vehicle) looked over before it causes you an issue and a hotel stay or a tow,” he said.

While spring maintenance and roadtrip checkups can be an afterthought, there are “a lot of those stories” where drivers run into trouble that routine maintenance could have prevented.

For example, one of his customers had an issue with her brake pads that needed to be addressed while she was travelling. In addition to Calgary hotel costs and stress, she ended up with a repair bill that was $2,000 – ten times more than it would have cost had she brought

her car to Mr. Kinsey before she hit the road.

It’s an issue he sees again and again.

“If they were to have it looked over before they go, it would have been a fraction of the cost. Sometimes it’s thousands of dollars of difference,” he said.

It’s particularly unfortunate when road-trip complications occur while customers are out of cell service.

“Basically any time you travel outside the Valley there’s limited service and huge tow bills,” he said, adding that sometimes those who are stranded have to hitchhike to get back into cell range. “It becomes a whole other issue, and we do it all the time without even a blink of an eye.”

Before heading out for spring and summer adventures, he recommends bringing vehicles in for checkups. He also advises monitoring fluid levels, making sure there are no leaks and adjusting tire pressure to summer levels.

“The biggest thing is peace of mind,” he said. “When you know that everything is in good running order, it makes it a lot easier to take off on your trips.”

Family ties bind team at OK Tire Sponsored content by Lorene Keitch Wayne Shaw has always been a car guy. For the past 45 years, his head has been under the hood of a vehicle, getting trusted customer’s cars back on the road.

Mr. Shaw grew up surrounded by wide open spaces along Westside Road. As a kid, he and his friends would build go-carts and race them along the quiet backcountry roads, learning through trial and error what it takes to build and maintain a good machine.

His dad was not a mechanic by trade, but was a tinkerer at heart and their big property was littered with vehicles, lawnmowers and such.

“Dad always had something in his shop . . . and I was always out there trying to give him a hand. So we (Wayne and his brothers) learned at a pretty young age,” says Mr. Shaw.

His first car was a ‘59 Volkswagen bug. It was a good training ground for being a mechanic as he ended up doing lots of work on it. When he was 17, Mr. Shaw and his buddies were goofing off when one of his friends crashed into the bug. He managed to get it home and do an early-morning autobody repair on the car before his parents woke up, he recalls with a chuckle.

Mr. Shaw spent 20 years at Lake Auto, followed by a few more over at Walkers. The plan, he says, was to retire. But OK Tire reached out to him to consider starting his own franchise in Invermere. From the get-go, OK Tire was a family business. Wayne and Kathi’s son Brandon had worked with his dad at Walkers as an apprentice, and had also spent time at Lake Auto. When OK Tire was up and running, Brandon came to work alongside his dad. Brandon’s wife Sandra keeps the office running, manning the front counter and keeping track of all the files.

The legacy continues with Brandon and Sandra’s son Kade. Sandra says when he was just a little kid, Brandon had shown Kade how to change a tire.

“We went out into the garage and he had a wrench on the quad tire,” Sandra laughs. They suggested everyone check their car tires before driving off that day!

Both Wayne and Brandon Shaw are ticketed automotive service technicians. The senior Shaw has been a local mechanic for so long, there are now second and third-generation of families coming to the shop. He has even had clients follow him from one shop to the next, trusting their vehicles to his expertise.

“Most of our customers have been with us for years,” comments Sandra. Regular customers don’t tend to have a lot of major issues, as regular maintenance at the shop keeps their vehicles in prime shape, she adds.

Meanwhile, commercial business operators in the area began requesting servicing for cars and boats, as well as friends of Mr. Hubman asking him to clean their cars after they saw how good his car looked thanks to Odyssey’s specialized cleaning equipment. It all organically built up the detailing business until Mr. Hubman formally launched Detailing Utopia about seven years ago.

“The equipment that we use for restoration and cleaning also works for detailing cars, boats and RVs,”

says Mr. Hubman. “Going from Odyssey to Detailing Utopia just made sense.”

Detailing Utopia and Odyssey offer two state of the art truck mounted hot water extraction units that also contain a large vacuum system with recovery tanks on board, Mr. Hubman explains, noting he has invested in the best tools so he can to give customers great results.

“Any fabric and hard surface areas that need to be cleaned, one of the best results I have found in my years of experience is just by using hot water, pressure and extraction, along with a mild cleaning solution. Doing chemical warfare when it comes to cleaning does not give the best results. You should rely on proper equipment and knowledge,” he says.

Detailing Utopia treats car exteriors from a thorough washing and cleaning to a power polish or regular wax. Inside, they do a deep, thorough clean. “We’ve invested in the equipment to make sure we can clean the fabric as much as we can,” he says. “Our end result gets you a cleaner, healthier vehicle.”

With the diversification from emergency response work, to carpet and upholstery cleaning and into car detailing, Mr. Hubbman offers a range of services that help to keep his business sustainable. He has even added a content cleaning machine – essentially a large, specialized washing machine – that can clean everything from life jackets, car covers or boat tops, to hockey equipment.

Mr. Hubman started in the first-responder disaster relief business back in 1992 on the coast before moving his operation to the Columbia Valley. He had been coming to the Valley for years and knew this is where he wanted to end up. He moved his business here, eventually opening up a second location in Cranbrook too.

He recently sold that operation so he can focus solely on Valley customers.

Mr. Hubman is proud of what he has accomplished here.

“I feel I’ve done my best to make sure people get back into their house. I do my best to try to help people,” Mr. Hubman says.

John Ronacher (Afi) passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family on April 5, 2019. John was born in Salzburg, Austria and moved to Windermere with his parents Catherine and Simon in 1927.

John was a lifelong fixture in the valley, having owned and operated the sawmill in Athalmer, the Coronation Hotel and numerous bush camps. It was his work in the back country where John was happiest, and he logged thousands of kilometers over the years exploring the area.

John lived a long life in good health, and his greatest joy was time spent with his family. He married his sweetheart Laura Palmason on July 7, 1945, and they spent 70 beautiful years together before her passing in 2016. In his later years, John loved spending time adventuring with his great-grandchildren, building a strong and lasting relationship with all of them and passing on his love of exploration and the Columbia Valley. His legacy to his family is tremendously valued - John always had a positive attitude and a smile to share.

Bearham, Harry January 3, 1948 – April 1, 2019

Harry Bearham, beloved husband of Audrey Bearham (nee Nixon) of Calgary, passed away on Monday, April 1, 2019 at the age of 71 years.

Harry was born on January 3, 1948 in Cranbrook, BC, to Harold and Yvonne Bearham. He met the love of his life Audrey at the age of sixteen and after marrying in 1969 they built a life filled with love and dedication to each other. They welcomed their daughter, Elizabeth in 1974. His family was completed with the addition of his son-in-law, Kevin Fennell in 2000 and the arrival of his grandson, Declan in 2009 and granddaughter, Hadley in 2013.

Harry enjoyed many years in the Columbia Valley and East Kootenay regions of British Columbia before settling in Calgary to enjoy being a full time Papa.

Harry spent his career working in the forestry industry enjoying forty years working for Crestbrook/Tembec in Canal Flats, Elko and Cranbrook divisions in various roles.

Harry loved fishing, coin collecting, prospecting and being outdoors. More recently he loved spending time with his friends and family. His integrity, honesty, strength and kindness will be missed by so many.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Legion in Invermere, BC on April 27, 2019 from 2-4 pm.

S OBITUARY S Loewen, Kenneth Brian March 14, 1954 – March 26, 2019 It is with a deep sense of loss that we announce the passing of Ken Loewen, on March 26th, 2019, at age 65.

Born March 14th, 1954, in Altona, Manitoba, Ken worked construction across the prairies before arriving in the Windermere Valley where he met his wife, Alison. They married in 1982 and raised their two children, Charlie and Jenny, in Edgewater, Pinantan, and Groundbirch, B.C. A lover of animals and life outdoors, Ken especially enjoyed time hunting and fishing in the mountains and on the ranch in Groundbirch. He had a quick wit and kind heart. He liked to help others and will be remembered for his generosity to neighbours and strangers alike. Ken was a hard worker and skilled carpenter who handcrafted many beautiful buildings, including his family’s home in Edgewater. He also spent time as a trained medic in the north and meeting fellow hunters and sportsmen across the valley while building and operating Radium Archery Ltd. Ken loved his family and he will be missed. He leaves behind Alison, Charlie, and Jenny, his siblings Lori, Rita, and Gary, his dog, Big Guy, and many extended family and friends.

Following his wishes, a private service was held on April 4, 2019. We thank those who have supported us, and those who were with Ken in the final chapter of his life. We take comfort in knowing his struggle is over, and that he is at peace.

In lieu of flowers, we encourage those who knew and cared about Ken to offer their generosity to someone in need.

S OBITUARY S Smith, Donald

November 22nd, 1927 – April 5th, 2019 It’s with great sadness that the family of Donald Ward Smith of Dry Gulch, B.C. wish to announce his passing at the age of 91.

Don was born in Armstrong, B.C., into a family of 8 children, 5 boys and 3 girls. He met his wife Patricia Anne Cox from Vernon, B.C., They married in Golden, B.C. in 1960 and moved to the Columbia Valley soon afterwards.

Don worked in several different industries but worked mostly in the sawmill industry. Don and Pat lived all down the valley but settled in Edgewater, B.C., where they raised their family of six children. They were a caring, loving couple who would do anything for their family and friends.

Don is survived by his children Sue, Ken, Jean, Ron and Bruce. He was predeceased by his wife Patricia Anne (Cox) Smith and son, Donald Richard Smith.

There will be no funeral services but a celebration of life tea will be held at the Edgewater Legion, Saturday, April 20th from 1 to 3 p.m.

God’s plan and purpose is perfect

By Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian Fellowship Church Jeremiah 29:11-12 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.”

A good part of my prayer time is spent praying for my family. On April 1st it was my granddaughter Reneah’s 9th birthday. We were at their place a couple of days later for coffee and cake, and as she was getting ready to go to bed she came over and gave me a big hug and a kiss. For me at that moment the world stopped; for just a second I was at the center of her life, and she was showing me how much she loves her grandpa. I have a love for my family that can not be expressed in words. However, as great as my love is for them, it is only a mirror image of the great love our God in heaven has for us. In a

week, Easter time, we will remember how great that love is, when we celebrate the death and resurrection of God the Son, our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. As John says in 1 John 4:7-12, “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us.”

God has a purpose and a plan for each of us. God doesn’t make mistakes. His wish is that all would come to repentance, and our part is to help those around us grow and experience the love of God and the joy of having faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

I know that God has a purpose and a plan for my life, and part of that plan is to be around to help Reneah, and of course her big brother Jesse to grow and experience the joy of knowing Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Golfer hits her stride in senior years

By Katie Watt intern@columbiavalleypioneer.com Sometimes all you need is time to make things better.

Ruth Gordon, a 55+ BC Summer Games bronze medalist golfer, knows this lesson well. Ms. Gordon first tried to get into golf in her twenties.

“I got clubs and I took lessons,” she says. But things didn’t go as she had hoped. “The first time I tried golf it went horribley.”

Golf is a sport that requires time and focus, neither of which she had much to spare in her twenties with four children, she says.

After giving the sport a try and deciding that maybe it wasn’t for her, Ms. Gordon set the clubs aside for awhile. In the meantime, she worked as a graphic artist after going to school at the Alberta College of Art and Design, keeping her busy alongside raising a family.

Twenty years later, after her children had grown up and she’d retired, Ms. Gordon and her husband moved to the Valley full time. During that time, Ms. Gordon dusted off her old golf clubs and made her way back to the course. She didn’t know it at the time, but that was a de-

cision that would ultimately lead her to winning bronze for low gross in the 55+ BC Summer Games.

Ms. Gordon did the same as she had done in her twenties when she returned to the course: she got clubs and she got lessons. This time, however, things went much smoother.

“I’m not sure what changed,” says Ms. Gordon. “It was less stress, I guess. Life gets in the way when you’re young, and golf is a time-consuming sport.”

Eventually, she found herself playing about four times a week on the Windermere and Radium golf courses. Her newfound skills did not go unnoticed. At a tournament she played in last summer, a friend of hers approached her with a recommendation.

“I think I probably played pretty well because my friend said ‘you ought to try out for the senior games.’”

Zone tryouts for the games were held in Cranbrook, and the Games were held in Kimberley. Tryouts went easier than expected for Ms. Gordon. She had been placed in the 80+ category, and she had no competitors in her zone; it was an immediate in to the Games.

When she arrived in Kimberley, however, she found herself competing against 12 other skilled players from

Invitation to Comment CertainTeed Gypsum Canada Inc. (CertainTeed) is proposing to amend the Environmental Assessment Certificate for the Kootenay West Mine which is located 12 km northeast of the Village of Canal Flats. The amendment would involve the relocation of a 4 km portion of the Kootenay Forest Service Road.

Submitted photo different zones across the province. It was certainly a challenge, but it depended on your temperament whether or not you took things competitively, says Ms. Gordon.

To her, she found it to be “a relaxed atmosphere.

Things are much calmer when you’re 80 and shooting 100 compared to when you’re 30 and shooting 75.”

Ms. Gordon took home bronze in low gross.

The Games are being hosted in Kelowna this year, and Ms. Gordon plans to return to them after another summer of hitting the greens.

“They’re close, and I met a lot of people that I’d like to see again,” she says.

Each winter Ms. Gordon vacations in Palm Desert, California so she’s able to practice golf year round. Perhaps spending enough time under the golden sun will help her to take home a gold of her own in the next 55+ BC Summer Games.
