Canal Flats will not be renaming itself; thank you to the village council and staff for giving us permission.

There will be no astronomical fees associated with the non-existant name change nor a provincial decree.

To our knowledge there has never been an iceberg spotted on Lake Windermere and it’s important to remember that only 10 per cent of an iceberg is visible above the waterline which would make our iceberg far too voluminous to navigate our shallow lakeshore.

The rules of golf have certainly changed this year but the summary provided, while based on the new rules, is less than accurate. Much less.

There will be no National Procrastination Day celebration and while all of us lost an hour due to daylight savings no one need look for it or return it on November 3rd.

Old Invermere community hall slated for demolition By lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Teardown of the old community hall in Invermere is expected to begin in the next couple weeks, with completion slated for June 20th.

The community hall – the Lake Windermere Memorial Community Hall as it’s formally called – was built as a memorial to those who lost their lives fighting overseas for Canada. But major structural issues, including a failing roof and floor, as well as an old boiler, led to the decision by the District of Invermere (DOI) in 2017 to tear down the decades-old structure.

A contract had been awarded for the hall teardown to Amiante Environmental Consulting, which began work in February 2018. However, that company was stopped three days into the project by WorkSafeBC. According to an inspection report by WorkSafeBC, the company had not fulfilled all the safety requirements, and further sampling would be required prior to demolition resuming.

After waiting for the issue to be resolved, the District finally decided to put the work out to tender again. The cheapest bid price was by Pacific Blasting & Demolition, for $379,685, plus tipping fees – almost twice the cost of the original contract, Mayor Al Miller confirms. He speculates the jump in prices was due to the asbestos abatement work that needs to be done on the site.

The DOI plans to discuss the tipping fees with the RDEK to see if there is any flexibility on rates.

They requested the work be done by June 20th, “so it wouldn’t be going into summer, with construction going on right in the middle of our town,” says Mayor Miller.

As for future plans for the site, nothing has been decided yet, confirms the mayor. Public consultation in June 2017 garnered a range of ideas. Mayor Miller says the central point that has come out of discussions so far is that people want to have it kept publicly-owned.

“The key piece that we have realized around any of our discussions so far is that they want us to retain that land,” says Mayor Miller. “I believe that’s a good thing that we retain that land, owned by the DOI, and then we can facilitate whatever happens there; we can help control and facilitate that.”

A multi-user group recreation facility has been bandied about since the Valley Fitness Centre, a nonprofit organization, is finding its current building to be too small for the number of users at its site. That is one of the many ideas that have come forward so far, says Mayor Miller.

“Because it is such a prime piece, we are going to be working really hard to come up with the very best use we can for that property. And the public is going to certainly have input into that,” he says. For the time being, he adds, the District will likely either seed or gravel the property.

• On Monday, March 25th, a ring was located in the parking lot of AG Valley Foods and turned into the Columbia Valley Detachment. If anyone is missing a ring which may have been lost at AG Valley Foods, please contact the Columbia Valley Detachment with a description of the ring and quote Columbia Valley file # 2019-619.

• On Monday, March 25th at 9 p.m., police received a report of several youth entering a vacant house in Canal Flats. Police attended and spoke to four youth who had been located in the house. In consultation with the property owner and parents of the youth, they were warned about their behaviour and reminded that, although the house was vacant, it was still private property and they were not permitted to be inside the house.

• On Monday, March 25th at 8:45 p.m., police were called to a disturbance on 10th Avenue in Invermere.

Two men were involved in a verbal confrontation which

escalated to an allegation of a physical assault.

There were no serious injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

• On Thursday, March 28th at 7:15 p.m., police responded to a disturbance at a residence on Kootenay Road # 3. An intoxicated male had been causing a disturbance at the residence. He was arrested for mischief and held in cells until he was sober.

• On Saturday, March 30th at 10 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a suspicious vehicle parked at the Kanata Hotel in Invermere. Police located the vehicle with three occupants. Police determined a female occupant in the vehicle had an outstanding warrant. The female was arrested and released to appear in court at a later date.

• On Sunday, March 31st at 7:30 p.m., police received a report of a possible impaired driver in a red Dodge Caliber. An officer located the vehicle travelling on 12th Street in Invermere and conducted a traffic stop.

A roadside screening test was administered which resulted in a fail. The driver was transported to the Columbia Valley Detachment where he provided additional breath tests which confirmed the driver’s blood/alcohol concentration was over the legal limit. The driver was served an administrative driving prohibition and released on a Promise to Appear in court at a later date.

The Columbia-Kootenay Zone Conservation Officer Service has received its first confirmed black bear sighting in the Valley. We are sending out this reminder message proactively in order to keep people, pets, property safe and keep our wildlife wild and alive.

The best and easiest way to keep our bears out of conflict is to ensure that all bear attractants are secured. Garbage is the obvious attractant that needs to be secured but items like birdseed, hummingbird feeders, food-soiled barbecues, fruit bushes, fruit trees, unmanaged compost, food and beverage recycling are commonly overlooked bear attractants.

These food sources, when accessed by bears, will condition the bears’ feeding behavior. They will look for built-up human habited areas as a food source.

Generally, if the bear feeds in areas where there are

people and are relatively undisturbed, they can become habituated to human presence. It is at this point, food conditioned and habituated, where we could see the bear’s behaviour become bolder as the bear looks for additional food sources within our homes, outbuildings and businesses.

We often hear “I don’t want to report the bear’s presence to the COs because it’s not bothering me” or “I don’t want the bear to be shot.” Unfortunately these mindsets can cause a bear’s behavior to escalate, due to lack of intervention, to a point where the animal can injure someone or have to be euthanized. When the Columbia-Kootenay’s Conservation Officers receive a human-wildlife complaint, they assess and determine the appropriate response needed. For example, if we get a complaint about a bear in a neighborhood we may pass it along to the WildSafeBC coordinators for them to post signs, or we may join WildSafeBC coordinators and conduct Continued on page 8 . . .

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Retired carpenter Doug Charlton is afraid to use his tablesaw lest any sawdust settle on the second-hand bikes he’s tuning up for another batch of riders.

His shiny dust-free bikes aren’t going to the highest bidder. Instead they are rolling out to would-be cyclists who can’t otherwise afford bikes of their own.

“I was not a bike mechanic two years ago,” he said, but you’d never be able to tell with the tires and tubes lining his walls, his collections of spare parts and his glee as he imagines handing his fixed-up bikes over to a new crop of recipients.

Gesturing to a gleaming pink children’s bike, he said: “Some little girl is just gonna go nuts.”

In the last two years he’s given 400 bikes new homes through his Bike It Forward program – which he said he hasn’t turned into a registered non-profit since he’d rather put all of his efforts into the bikes themselves.

When a couple from the Valley moved away and started The Polar Bike Project to take bikes to children in remote communities in Nunavut, Mr. Charlton made a donation and invited them to call if they needed help.

When they did, he turned his workshop into a bike garage.

“I’ve become a little obsessed,” he said. “Every bike is so interesting.”

Sometimes Mr. Charlton comes home to find donated bikes waiting for him.

“People have been so generous,” he said.

While he appreciates donations of cash and bikes, he finds the majority of his bikes at the landfill.

“I just became a fixture at the dump,” he said. “It’s almost all scrounged. I scrounge as much as I can.”

Mr. Charlton brings the bicycles home and rebuilds them. He disassembles the bikes that aren’t salvageable and uses them for parts.

“These are all throwaway bikes that I’m willing to put money and time in to fix,” he said. “This has given me my new little mission in life.”

He gets a great deal of satisfaction from presenting others with bikes and seeing their faces light up with joy.

His phone is filled with photos from trips he’s taken all the way up to Nunavut and over to Calgary to distribute bikes to refugees and to the disadvantaged. Ecstatic riders beam in photo after photo as they hold onto their new treasures.

One girl was so unfamiliar with bicycles that Mr. Charlton said he had to show her how to push it so she could take it with her. Now he imagines that she’s “riding it like crazy.”

Mr. Charlton distributes his bikes through a variety of groups that support those in need. Last year he began providing bikes to Family Dynamix for their clients and is especially interested in sharing bikes locally.

“I’ve biked forever, of course, like most fortunate people in Canada,” he said.

In his childhood, he began to associate biking with freedom and wants others to experience the same pedal-powered joy.

“As long as I can keep bikes coming in... I feel like I could do this forever,” he said. “It’s become a good retirement gig for me.”

Bike Swap returns on Saturday The Columbia Valley Cycling Society Bike Swap will take place at the Columbia Valley Centre on Saturday, April 6th.

Those with bikes to sell can drop them off from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. There is a 15 per cent consignment fee.

Proceeds will go to building and maintaining trails. The sale will run from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

If your bike doesn’t sell or if you pick up a new one and are ready to pass on your old one, Mr. Charlton is happy to take any Bike Swap leftovers and find them new homes.

The flavour of your Pioneer sandwich

The Columbia Valley Pioneer has a proud history of covering the big and small things that make this area unique. And each week, we strive to bring you a balanced newspaper that includes the news of the day, and the stories you want to read.

We attend municipal Council meetings, pay attention to political news, and listen as our politicians speak. We write about upcoming events, whether they are recurring events that everyone in the Valley knows about, or brand new endeavours for worthy causes. We find interesting people and tell their stories so you will know the people in our Valley neighbourhood a little better. We pepper the paper with sports victories, personal triumphs, and other celebratory moments found within the day-to-day lives of those who call this place home, sometimes even of those who once called this place home and still know the faces and foundations of this place.

Not all the news is rosy. Sometimes we tackle stories that show the challenges faced by people living here, and how they are working through those issues.

We call into question why things are the way they are, and write about the people looking to affect change.

And each Thursday, we flip through the Pioneer and ask whether we did the community proud again.

So this week, we want to ask you: how are we doing? What do you want to see in the Pioneer?

What do you eagerly read in the paper? What types of stories do you always turn past? Are there groups, events, or topics you want to see more of? Less of? We want to know!

We are limited by space in each week’s edition.

There is an endless array of stories we could write and a finite amount of room to put those stories in. But that is why it is so important to gauge what it is you want to see. There are some stories that will always appear here – the standard fillings found in the newspaper’s weekly sandwich. But there are many ideas that could add to the weekly flavour. Or perhaps the taste of some topics doesn’t satisfy your newspaper appetite. Depending on feedback, we can look to alter the mix we put in our weekly sandwich. Add more pineapples? Fewer radishes? Let us know!

Editor part of leftist agenda Dear Editor: Regarding Lorene Keitch’s op-ed of the firing of John Perks as the Kamloops Chamber of Commerce’s executive director (March 28th). This confirms that the dark leftist, progressive agenda, has made it all the way into small town papers and business.

Your editor references some non-contextualized and summarized social media posts of personal beliefs as the reason for Mr. Perks’ dismissal; beliefs that have nothing to do with the job he was hired to do, promote Kamloops business.

Denies climate change? Or does he question the progressive ideology of catastrophic manmade climate change? A theory that many climate scientists also question. Dr. Richard Lindzen for one: https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2q9BT2LIUA Called Justin Trudeau an idiot? May I remind the readers that MP Trudeau called MP Peter Kent a “piece of sh*t” in the House of Commons. He went on to become the prime minister.

Referred to addicts as junkies? This is very subjective and needs context. Many drug users hate the word addict and prefer junkie. Many people are un-

aware of the disease of addiction and its interaction with mental health and vice versa.

Migrant Caravan staged? Alternative media and citizen journalists who went to Mexico have raised serious doubts about the migrant caravan; people who were well fed, well dressed and had cellphones were trucked in at various points. Who paid for that?

Sounds staged to me.

This would not be complete without the label of Islamaphobe. Ms. Keitch does not disappoint. Islamaphobia is a nonword of the progressives. A phobia is an irrational fear. No one has an irrational fear of Islamists. I was surprised the white supremacist label wasn’t trotted out.

Why is this, and other news stories “outing” Mr. Perks, any different than Bill Whatcott‘s outing Morgane Oger? Morgane Oger’s sexual orientation was already in the public realm. The BCHRT levied a $55,000 fine to Mr. Whatcott. Was Mr. Perks privacy not violated in a similar way? My hope is that he avails himself of all legal remedies to stop this type of witch hunt from happening again.

I attended the pubic hearing on March 20th and would like to clarify a few points. The reporting in March 28th’s issue of the Pioneer says that “it’s anyone’s guess” what the land would be used for, but that is not entirely true. The District of Invermere (DOI) has clearly stated that the whole point of buying this land is to ensure public access to the lakefront and keeping the marina and boat launch in operation. The missing parts of the plan concern what will be done with the rest of the land, and what the public waterfront will look like. DOI has clearly stated that it intends to consult the town on their development planning. But why no plan before the purchase? Unfortunately, the seller has imposed conditions on the sale: DOI has only until July 1st to respond, . . . ‘Editor’ from 6 I do agree with Ms. Keitch on one statement – “This case reminds us of something every modern citizen should know”: if you have beliefs that don’t align with the leftist progressive and mainstream media narrative you will be crushed. Unless, we stand up and say “enough”. Members of the Kamloops Chamber, you should be ashamed. Columbia Valley Pioneer

and they will not split the land parcel so DOI needs to buy all the land not just the waterfront. Also, as discussed in the meeting, DOI has always intended to buy available lakefront to create areas for public waterfront access. DOI intended to buy lands adjacent to Kinsmen beach but lost this opportunity and now private homes effectively block the waterfront. So DOI does not want to miss their opportunity a second time, especially since this is the last large parcel of waterfront they are likely to ever get. So the reality is that we need to proceed with our decision based on DOI’s clearly stated intentions for this land, rather than an exact plan that would never be completed in time.

No tricking this reader Dear Editor: Nice try! Happy April Fools Day. In your paper of March 28th, in the Historical Lens photo, you showed a picture captioned, “Lake Windermere Iceberg”.

Everybody knows that 90% of an iceberg is located below the waterline. Well that iceberg was way too close to shore in shallow water to be a real photo. Nope, you took a photo of that iceberg floating out

in the middle of the lake where the water is much deeper and photoshopped it to a spot nearer the shore to make a more dramatic picture. Really!!?? Do you think that your readers are that gullible?

Interior Health Spring has arrived and people across the Interior Health region are spending more time outdoors. This can mean an increase in tick bites.

Ticks are small bugs, about the size of a sesame seed, which feed on the blood of humans and animals and, sometimes, transmit diseases.

Ticks are prevalent throughout the Interior and are typically found in tall grass and wooded areas. They are easiest to spot on a person or pet when they are actually sucking blood. Ticks burrow part way into the skin, bite, draw blood, and then drop off. The feeding tick’s mouth will be under the skin, but the back parts will be sticking out. When they are full of blood they are usually bluegrey in colour. This is called an engorged tick.

Tick species and symptoms General symptoms of tick-borne infections include fever, headache, muscle pain, and rash.

The species of ticks most commonly found through Interior Health are Wood Ticks (Dermacentor andersoni). These ticks do not carry the Lyme disease bacteria; however, they can carry other diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Ixodes ticks (Ixodes pacificus or Ixodes angustus) are the species that transmit Lyme disease. They are more common throughout coastal B.C. but may be present in some Interior Health areas. While less than one per cent of Ixodes in B.C. carry Lyme disease, it is important to recognize the symptoms. In addition to fever, headache, and muscle pain, people infected with Lyme disease will often develop a rash that looks like a “bull’s eye” target which expands from the site of the tick bite.

Certain ticks may release toxins that can cause temporary muscle weakness and paralysis if left attached for several days. Once the tick is removed, symptoms fade.

What to do It is important to remove ticks found on people and pets. To do so, wear gloves and use needle nose tweezers to gently grasp the tick close to the skin. Pull the tick straight out without squeezing it. After it is removed, clean the area with soap and water. If the tick is alive (live ticks can be tested for Lyme disease), you can save it in a sealed container with a cotton ball soaked in water.

Record the date of the bite on the container. If you have . . . ‘Bears’ from 4 an attractant audit in the area. Or perhaps we may use a non-lethal intervention option to move the bear along.

Attractant audits involve officers and/or WildSafeBC coordinators going door to door in the conflict areas to identify attractants and provide educational materials or advice. Conservation Officers could also issue: Dangerous Wildlife Protection

concerns or need assistance removing a tick, please contact your doctor or visit a walk-in medical clinic.

Although most tick bites are harmless, it is important to watch for signs of illness and see a doctor as soon as possible if you notice a bull’s eye rash or other symptoms.

If you saved the tick, bring it with you to your medical appointment.

Fortunately, a number of precautions can be taken to prevent tick bites and tick-related illnesses. For example, you should: • Walk on cleared trails when in tall grass or wooded areas.

• Cover up by wearing a hat, long sleeves, and pants.

• Wear light-coloured clothing to help spot ticks easily.

• Tuck pant legs into socks or boots.

• Apply insect repellent containing DEET on uncovered skin.

• Check clothing and scalp (covered or not) when leaving an area where ticks may live. Ask someone to help check hard-to-reach areas.

• Have a shower after returning from areas where ticks may live.

• Regularly check household pets for ticks.

To help keep ticks away from your home and yard, you can: • Keep your lawn short and remove any fallen leaves and weeds.

• Keep a buffer area such as a wood-chip or gravel border between your lawn and wooded areas or stone walls. Any play equipment or play zones should be kept away from wooded areas.

• Trim tree branches to allow more sunlight in your yard.

• Keep wood piles and bird feeders away from the house.

• Widen and maintain trails on your property.

RDEK establishes self-fill sandbag stations as snow melt continues Regional District of East Kootenay With the arrival of warmer temperatures, the low-elevation snow is quickly disappearing and the RDEK is encouraging residents in flood-prone areas to take steps now to be aware and prepare.

Residents who are concerned that they may be impacted by high water levels should take steps now to prepare themselves,” adds Mr. Balan. “At the emergency management level, we are working cooperatively with all the municipalities and First Nations in the East Kootenay and are ready to provide support should it be required as we head into the spring freshet.”

Determining the most appropriate beneficiary structure for one’s financial assets can be a daunting task. Here are the basics of beneficiary options within the most common investment accounts.

How many can I have?

From a legal standpoint, a person may name as many beneficiaries on their investment accounts as they like, as long as the total adds up to 100 per cent of the account in question. These rules may vary slightly between financial institutions due to computer system limitations or firm-specific policies, but the larger institutions in Canada have no pre-set maximum.

Beneficiary Types There are two main types of beneficiaries: named beneficiaries and successor holders.

The British Columbia Wills, Estates and Succession Act provides that: “A benefit payable to a designated beneficiary or to a trustee appointed under section 92 under a benefit plan on the death of a participant does not form part of the participant’s estate and is not subject to the claims of the participant’s creditors.” In other words, the assets in accounts with named beneficiaries will pass directly to the beneficiary, bypassing the deceased’s estate. A named beneficiary may be an individual or entity.

On the other hand, a successor can only be a spouse or common-law partner. Successors become the new account holder and acquire all rights the original account holder has. In the case of an annuity or a RRIF, a successor holder would be considered a successor annuitant.

Account types Each of the most common investment account types has specific nuances to consider when determining a beneficiary structure. A TFSA holder can name a spouse or

common-law partner as the successor holder. On the death of the holder, the spouse becomes the new holder, keeping the tax exempt status of the TFSA. This will not affect the TFSA contribution room of the spouse. If another beneficiary besides one’s spouse is desired on the TFSA, the account will no longer be a TFSA upon the original account holder’s passing.

RRSPs permit named beneficiaries. If designated as the beneficiary, an RRSP can be transferred tax-free to an RRSP in the name of the surviving spouse. To all other beneficiaries, including one’s estate, the RRSP is deemed to be disposed of upon the death of the plan holder, and becomes taxable income in that calendar year.

In the case of a RRIF, there may be a named beneficiary or a successor annuitant. With a successor annuitant, the RRIF will be moved in-kind, tax-free to a RRIF in the surviving spouse’s name, and the account would continue on as normal. Like an RRSP, if a spouse is the named beneficiary of a RRIF, it will pass to him or her tax-free. The main difference, however, is the RRIF payments would be recalculated based on the surviving spouse’s information, not the deceased spouse.

Non-registered investment accounts do not permit beneficiary designations. Therefore, a non-registered account is handled as part of one’s estate. A joint account with right of survivorship will pass to the survivor upon death, and will not form part of one’s estate.

Final thoughts It’s important to ensure your life savings will be distributed according to your wishes, however, it’s also important to consider the risk and complexity of the estate settlement when plan proceeds are split multiple ways. For very complex estates or those with many beneficiaries, it might make more sense to dispose of assets through one’s will. That way, beneficiary information can be changed easily if need be.

In addition to your lawyer, be sure to discuss your estate plan with your financial advisor to ensure your financial assets are directed according to your wishes, and will be dispersed optimally.

Painting lazy-cat mountains

The young painter is selling cards featuring the Whiteway with a portion of the profits going to support the Toby Creek Nordic Club.

Kate, 14 years old, has painted as a hobby for a number of years now. She says she likes painting because of the challenge and effort involved.

“One of the things I like is about how much it teaches me to continue working and not give up, even when it isn’t going the way I want it to,” she says.

Kate pauses when asked what her favourite work of art is she has painted, carefully deciding that it is probably one titled Winter Wonderland.

“I like that I finally figured out how to do the sky after like 17 times,” she explains.

She painted Whiteway by taking photos on the famous winter ski and skate track, then using the photos as inspiration for her painting.

“It took awhile to get pictures of everything I wantedsometimes the mountains had good light, sometimes the snow did,” she says.

She added Fort Point in when she decided the painting looked a “little flat,” and is happy with how the whole image turned out in the end. She figures her favourite part of the painting is how the mountains look.

“I think of mountains as lazy cats – majestic, but lazy at the same time. They kind of sprawl across the landscape,” she describes.

Ten per cent of the profits from sales of the Whiteway card are going to the Toby Creek Nordic Club, which operates the Whiteway. Kate is a member of the nordic club and spends a good deal of time skiing along the winter

PACs fundraise for accessible playground/ forest classroom

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Schools in the Windermere zone have a strong network of Parent Advisory Councils (PACs) working to fundraise for the ‘extras’ in each school. This week we share what two of the school PACs are working towards to help make life better for the students at those schools and the communities in which they live.

Martin Morigeau Elementary School Columbia Basin Trust recently donated $25,000 to Martin Morigeau Elementary School (MMES), helping the Valley school achieve their $160,000 goal of building an accessible playground. The playground will feature a rubberized surface for easy accessibility, and multiple levels of play spaces and slides accessed via ramps.

Maddi Taylor, MMES PAC chair, says it will be a great asset at the school.

“It is an awesome accessible playground,” she comments. “It has multiple levels so even children in wheelchairs can still play with some of the features.”

The Ministry of Education gave the project $105,000 last year. Past president Candy Afonso adds that the PAC has been fundraising for several years for this project. With the ministry’s grant that was tied to it being an accessible playground, PAC was motivated to keep the fundraising momentum up.

“An accessible playground would allow all the kids to play together, and also knowing we have some community members and some children in our community that could utilize the accessible playground would mean nobody is left behind,” Ms. Afonso says. “It will be a ‘wow’ factor

Windermere Elementary School Windermere Elementary School’s (WES) PAC has taken on the challenge of fundraising to build a forest classroom. Julia Buttle, PAC chair, says the plan is to develop an area that is down a slight embankment from the main playing field, running from the basketball court right to North Street. The outdoor classroom will include large trees, rocks and boulders, providing natural play spaces and outdoor learning classroom environment.

The current WES field is stark, with flat fields and no large trees. With the new outdoor classroom, there will be 20 mature coniferous and deciduous trees planted.

“There’s lots of research out there to support outdoor learning. But there are some boundaries to taking kids offsite all the time, so we wanted to have a place on site they could go to,” explains Ms. Buttle, adding PAC was also interested in bringing some nature landscape to the giant field at the same time.

The total project will be $30,000. The PAC has applied for some local and provincial grants and are hoping to have enough funding to get the project built for the start of the new school year this September. If you are interested in donating to this project, email PACWES6@gmail.com.

The WES PAC’s biggest annual fundraiser for the past two years has been the fall carnival. Ms. Buttle confirms the carnival will be happening again this September.

Help is here in times of grief

By Michèle Neider Executive Director Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley We tend to associate dying with old age.

While it may be logical to think that way, unfortunately it is not always the case. As the saying goes: We do not know our time and day. At 26 years of age, I received a call on August 11th, 1986 to tell me that my 19-year-old brother had passed away. How could this be possible? I was totally numb and in complete denial. My brother was full of life, he was smart, was studying physics in college, and had a whole future ahead of him. He was in Quebec, I was living in B.C. I packed my bags, flew across the country, and drove for another 5 hours to attend my brother’s funeral. It is only when I saw him laying in his coffin that the reality of his death hit me. I could no longer hold the pain inside and just exploded in the funeral parlour sobbing, wondering why it happened to my young, gentle, kind, and beautiful brother.

After returning to Vancouver I tried to share with a few friends, but they could not understand and quickly changed the conversation or stayed away. They had not gone through the experience of losing someone so young yet. They did not know how or did not want to deal with it.

In the end, I did what society expected me to do when dealing with loss and grief, that is: suck it up, be strong, don’t talk about it, move on, push it down, and put up a good front.

Move forward 35 years and today I see how the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley has supported community members for the past six years. I wish I would have had known at the time that such an organization existed. I know they would have received me and supported me in my grief. They would have explained to me that what I felt inside was normal and would have walked with me through my grieving process.

Thanks to better research, we now have a deeper understanding of the emotional effects that loss (any loss) has on human beings. Researchers now tell us what we have intrinsically known for hundred of years; that we are not meant to grieve alone. We need someone that will listen and will not judge how we feel. Be it anger, resentment, confusion, numbness, shame, or whatever feelings that may come. There is no bravery in ‘stuffing it down’ because people around expect us to move on. A society, a community, or a family is as healthy as it allows people to heal.

Therefore, if you or someone you know is dealing with a loss or is eminently expecting the loss of a loved one, do contact the Hospice Society for assistance. We have programs that help with end of life, bereavement, and one-on-one support. We provide free training to those wanting to volunteer and walk with individuals through their process.

For nearly two and a half decades, the Wings Over the Rockies Festival has facilitated discovery of the rich natural and cultural history of the Upper Columbia valley.

In 2019, from May 6th to 12th, over 100 events bring expert explorers, presenters, guides, scientists, and artists to share their discoveries and insights into the area’s wildlife and habitats. But every Wings participant will find their own experiences and meaning in these landscapes based on this year’s theme: “Go ahead…Explore!”

The Keynote speaker, internationally celebrated explorer Laval St. Germain, is the only Canadian to have climbed Mount Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen and the holder of the fastest ever crossing of the North Atlantic Ocean by solo ocean row boat from mainland North America to mainland Europe. At this year’s festival Gala event, hear and see what it takes to have the ability to step out way past normal, and shove off way past safe, but come back alive.

Game of Stones Submitted by the Invermere and District Curling Club The Invermere and District Curling club is very proud of some curlers who have taken the next step.

First we had the Jones team made up of Holly Jones, Stephanie Schroeder, Trish Phillips and Kindry Luyendyk who won the club playdowns for our area and represented us very well at the provincial playdowns at Abbotsford, placing third.

Hockey gold for Kiefer Jones

By Lorene Keitch Lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Kiefer Jones is going to have to get a larger trophy shelf after taking home yet another championship award, this time in the sport of hockey.

While Mr. Jones no longer lives in the Columbia Valley, he has strong Valley roots and is a well-known name around the area. Mr. Jones is a two-time world-champion golfer on the blind golf circuit, and wrapped up the last golf season with overall low gross at the ISPS Handa World Blind Golf Championships in October 2018.

But when the golf courses are shut down each season, Mr. Jones likes to lace up his skates and hit the ice. And he is pretty good at it too. He used to play in a league for sighted players but found it a challenge to track the puck even though

his skating was on par with fellow players. In blind hockey, the puck is four times larger than a standard puck, and rattles thanks to hollow steel shells inside filled with ball bearings.

Last year and this year, Mr. Jones has played in the Canadian Nationals Blind Hockey tournament. This year, the tournament added the United States into the mix. The Canadians were divided into two teams, roughly split between east and west, and the three teams played a double round robin series. Mr. Jones’ team, ‘Canada West’ cleaned house, taking home the gold medal; Canada West won the final game 5-1. The tournament was held in Toronto, March 22nd-24th.

Canada’s blind hockey community was established first and has had time to build up in comparison to the US, Mr. Jones reports.

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Arie, Dad, Opa, Frosty, Harry. Survived by family, near and far.

Arie’s wit and honest humor will be missed as he loved to joke and make others laugh. Arrangements by McPherson Funeral Services as per Arie’s wishes cremation has taken place. A private family celebration of life to take place at a later date, at the Canal Flats Cemetery. In loving memory.

S OBITUARY S Merrin, Elizabeth Gale (Bonnie) June 1, 1944 – March 21, 2019

Pasowisty, Mark Anthony

March 12, 1961 -March 20, 2019 It’s with heavy hearts that the family of Mark Pasowisty of Edgewater B.C. wish to announce his passing at age 58. Mark was born in Fernie as the youngest of 6 children to Adam and Louise Pasowisty and grew up in Edgewater.

He had worked in the pipeline industry in Alberta for many years untill he returned to the valley to work at the Radium mill.

Elizabeth Gale (Bonnie) Merrin, beloved wife of Donald, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the Victoria General Hospital on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at the age of 74 years.

Bonnie was born on June 1, 1944 in Vancouver. She was raised in West Vancouver and spent many childhood days at her family cabin at Halfmoon Bay. This is where she met the love of her life Don who she married on September 15,1967.

Shorty after they moved their tiny family to Alberta, settling in Calgary where they ran a family business.

Bonnie and Don were fortunate to retire early to Windermere B.C. in the mid-1990s. A passionate gardener, artist, crossword champion, Bonnie loved to travel and went on many great adventures with Don to Europe, Australia and Asia.

More recently they enjoyed winters in Cabo and Victoria and summers at their home in Windermere.

Mark was predeceased by his parents Adam and Louise and his older brother Frank. He is survived by his partner of 21 years (Jim) as well as 2 brothers (Adam and Nick) , 2 sisters (Barbara and Debbie) and a large extended family.

While Bonnie had many passions, her greatest joy was being a grandmother. Known as Grandma B to Presley, Carter, Elyse and Reese, Bonnie loved spending countless hours with them talking, doing crafts, playing and laughing.

Mark had many friends in B.C. and Alberta and will be remembered by his Union Brothers and Sisters and others at CANFOR.

Bonnie leaves behind her husband Don, son Rick (Tara); daughters Andrea (Matt) and Christina, her beloved grandchildren, sister Lynn Traunweiser (Al) of Victoria B.C, sister in law Barbara Schick (Jeffery) of Sherman Oaks, California and numerous nieces and nephews. She goes to be reunited with her parents John B.and J.Elaine Simpson of Halfmoon Bay B.C, and brother George B. Simpson of West Vancouver B.C.

The family wishes to thank all the first responders as well as Mark’s neighbour who provided assistance on the evening that he passed. We would also like to thank the management at CANFOR and all the wonderful people in the valley who have offered such warm support during this time.

A private memorial will be held at a later date.

Two “pioneers” passed away in the month of February. Each family attended the others “Celebration of Life” on March 29th and 30th of 2019.

My family was so touched with various speakers and especially Warren Newcomen (Henry’s oldest son) and master of ceremonies for his dad’s celebration. In typical Newcomen fashion grace and compassion was shown to my dad, Ed. Everyone knows they were great competitors on the curling rink and good friends off the rink. Both were “larger than life” that was exceeded only by the size of their hearts, sponsoring various sports teams and community events.

What many people don’t know is that in the early 1970s times were tough for the pub and Dad had to get a second job. Henry hired Dad as an employee. Henry must have been desperate for men, for Dad knew nothing about electricity!

Future generations can learn about respect, having fun, compassion and a sense of community from older generations.

If you really want all dog poop to biodegrade “naturally” please be considerate of others and make sure that all necessary biodegrading happens on your own yard. Over 350 years of service recognized at annual fire department banquet

Regional District of East Kootenay The Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Service (CVRFS) hosted its annual appreciation banquet Wednesday, March 27th and presented a number of service awards.

“It was a special evening, not only because we were able to honour and thank all of the men and women who give of their time to protect our communities, but also to recognize those members who have reached service milestones,” says CVRFS Fire Chief Jim Miller.

“When you add up the years of service just for those people receiving awards, it accounted for over 350 years of selflessness and volunteerism. That is a staggering number.”

Members were recognized for five, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of service to the Edgewater, Panorama, Windermere and Fairmont Fire Departments.

The longest-standing member to be recognized was Murray Kubian who received a standing ovation as he was presented with a special plaque in honour of his 36 years of service.

“Murray is retiring this year and we will certainly miss his experience and influence. He is an expert on our pumps and role model firefighter. From day one he has been a dependable, dedicated member and

It is important for them to know how grateful we are to them and it was great to be able to see so many of them join us for the banquet this year.”

The world of blind hockey is expanding, with growth in Canada and the US, as well as interest in Europe about starting up some national blind hockey programs, Mr. Jones reports.

With the hockey season behind him, Mr. Jones is looking forward to the Vision Cup this June, with the best in the world of blind golf converging in Dublin, Ireland for the prestigious event. Then Mr. Jones will be touring the East Kootenay, with the BC Open in Creston this July, followed by the Westerns in Kimberley at Bootleg Gap and the Canadian Open at St. Eugene Mission in Cranbrook.

Postpartum dads, why so blue?

Parenting is one of the most rewarding experiences life has to offer, but it does come with its own unique challenges and stress.

These are never more apparent than in the first 6 to 12 months after taking your new addition home. While the bulk of research has involved maternal postpartum care and interventions to support women, there is new literature looking at the significant impact we can have as men, on both our partners and our children.

Paternal postpartum depression (PPPD), paternal abandonment syndrome, and daddy blues, all refer to a significant problem for many men and families that goes under-diagnosed and under-treated. The incidence in the literature is estimated from 4-25% of new fathers suffer from this phenomena in the first 12 months of life.

The symptoms are similar to those experienced by women during this period. Weight loss or gain, fatigue, loss of energy, increased or decreased sleep, agitation, feeling of worthlessness or guilt, and decreased concentration.

More specific to men are those symptoms that involve abandonment of the family unit, increased aggression and substance use. If present, these often come at a time

There are many theories as to the cause of PPPD which include sleep deprivation, lack of social support, decreased intimacy, and even paternal anxiety or lack of knowledge when it comes to childcare. The latter which suggests the traditional skills of caring for a newborn have been shared more effectively between women, which results in many men feeling unequipped for the rigours of child care. This has resulted in the creation of websites such as newdadmanual.ca, and dadcentral.ca, to help us support our partners with the intense stress placed on women during the postpartum period.

To help reduce the incidence of PPPD I would encourage new fathers to reach out in the months prior to meeting your newborn. Ask questions of your family, friends, and health care practitioners, and have an open discussion with your partner regarding both of your expectations for the parenting roles. In 2019 we as men should encourage each other to be more involved in parenting activities, which in turn leads to healthier relationships with both our partners and our children.

The gift of presence in this Lent season

By Laura Hermakin Reverend Christ Church Trinity As we journey through the season of Lent within the Church, I find myself wondering about the ways we intentionally care for ourselves. In this season, as we prepare for the celebration of Easter, the season of joy and refreshment, we must seek ways to enjoy the new life that springs up around us as we delight also in the gift of the season of spring. And of course, one of the ways we can best experience joy and new life is by creating the space within our own souls and bodies.

For example, consider why we let the behaviour of others complicate our lives, cause hurt, alienate us from friends and family members, even destroy our inner peace. Why? And when we do let the behaviour of others do those things, what consequences come our way? Surely when we let the negative behaviour of others enter our thoughts, conversations and even our sleep to the point that we become unable to think about much else or get a full night’s sleep, our inner peace is destroyed. If we want to know and experience inner peace, we must make decisions about who we let into our thoughts, conversations, emails and social circles and not let the behaviour

of others destroy our inner peace.

As we practice gratitude for the gifts around us and take care of ourselves, we must consider these questions: What decisions do we make about who we let into our lives, minds, time, discussions, emails, and social circles?

And, are we taking care of ourselves and walking a path of inner peace? And when the busyness of life grabs us, or when we think we have no time, energy, creativity or passion for life, perhaps it is time to ask ourselves: Where’s the balance? Maybe we don’t allow ourselves to simply be and instead, focus on ourselves as humans doing rather than humans being.

Instead of doing things which drain us to the point that the passion to create or the desire to spend quality time with self, family or close friends is no longer important (or even existent) in our daily doings, maybe it’s time to give ourselves the gift of presence. Presence is a time when we nurture our spirit, are gentle with ourselves, breathe in calm, peace and healing, and breathe out anxiety, fear and pain. Maybe it’s time to recognize that we don’t have to do it all, that saying no or not right now is exercising wisdom. Acknowledging our vulnerability is not weakness, but strength in self-awareness.

Giving the gift of presence to ourselves can become the means for creating the space we need for the precious balance so necessary to a life where the spirit grows, personhood evolves and healing, health and wholeness can emerge. May we give ourselves the gift of presence as we rediscover ourselves and give in to the hope of Easter joy to come!
