Cottonwood group still wants to buy rest of logging property BILL METCALFE Nelson Star

After several months of negotiations the Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) board has approved the purchase of 21.6 hectares of private land around Cottonwood Lake that was slated for logging by Nelson Land Corporation.

The purchase price is $450,000 for the purchase of timber on the property, plus closing costs, and the issuance of a tax receipt for the value of the land (without timber). A $200,000 grant from Columbia Basin Trust will contribute to the purchase.

The RDCK currently owns Cottonwood Lake Regional Park (0.8 hectares) and operates the Nelson Salmo Great Northern Rail Trail (48 kilometres), both adjacent to the purchased area.

The acquisition will expand Cottonwood Lake Regional Park to 22.4 hectares.

The purchase was negotiated by the Nelson, Salmo, E, F and G Regional Parks Commission, an RDCK body.

Areas E, F, and G refer to the three electoral areas of the RDCK in the immediate vicinity, represented by Ramona Faust, Tom Newell, and Hans Cunningham respectively.

“The commission and my colleagues on the board have received hundreds of letters, emails and phone calls from residents and visitors who wished to express their concern for this issue,” said Ramona Faust, chair of the parks commission.

At a public meeting in December almost 300 attendees voiced their concerns, heard from experts, and shared possible solutions.

In January, the Cottonwood Lake Preservation Society was formed. Since then the group has raised more than $50,000 intended as seed money to apply for grants to purchase the land.

surrounding Cottonwood Lake. But the purchased land is only one-third of the area slated for logging, he said.

“The RDCK …. has purchased land on the west shore of the lake, the entrance to the park, and alongside the Great Northern Rail Trail.

So the larger portion of land above Cottonwood Lake is still privately owned and very much under threat.

There is no zoning for this area and private land logging is still unregulated.”

McBurney said his group will keep fundraising to preserve all the land around the lake as well as the forest above the Apex ski area.

“We’ll take the good news of today’s announcement and keep looking for ways to save the remaining land.

The RDCK purchase agreement will close July 31, and the board voted further to give non-financial support to the preservation society in its attempt to obtain more land.

“This is the minimum purchase that we feel maintained the visual quality of the park,” said the RDCK’s Joe Chirico. “We are not saying that now all the values are protected. It is still up to the preservation society to do that.”

The RDCK will continue fundraising between now and the July 31 closing date, Chirico said, to try to reduce the amount it has to borrow. He said the commission has many options when it comes to the term of the loan, which could be as few as two or as many as 30 years.

McBurney said the preservation society is planning a public meeting at the Rod and Gun Club on April 3 at 6 p.m. to hear community feedback on the RDCK’s purchase and discuss how the group can best use its funds to secure more land.

“I have heard people say, ‘Yeah, I look at it and the sign says it is full and there is a waiting list for permits, but I can see that it is not full.’

“I have heard of people who are not really using their monthly permits but they are afraid to let go of them. Because of the waiting list, they might never get one again. So there are people not using it even for an entire season.”

Thumm said this would require a discussion between the city, the Regional District of Central Kootenay, and Ministry of Transportation, and that the strong support for a park-and-ride in the survey responses will likely prompt such a discussion.

Councillor Brittny Anderson pointed out the current park-and-ride just west of town is used just as much for people leaving town as for people entering it, so this current use might not decrease downtown traffic much.

“For example, to free up parking spaces we have to get cars off the road, so this means more work on active transportation, more work on transit.”

Telus will spend $20 million to bring fibre optic network to 90 per cent of homes and businesses in Nelson within the next year, a company executive announced Thursday.

“This will get Nelson ready for future wireless technologies such as 5G,” said Telus’s Ben Bajaj.

“We have been working closely with communities to make the West Kootenay one of the most connected regions in North America,” he said, adding that “Nelson could become BC’s own version of Silicon Valley.”

In attendance at the press conference in Nelson were Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall, provincial Minister Citizens’ Services Jinny Sims, a number of local local tech and economic luminaries, and four Nelson city councillors.

Nelson’s cable will not be restricted to the city but will extend to Taghum and up the North Shore to Willow Point, Bajaj said.

Most residents of the Slocan Valley are going to have high-speed internet service within the year, because of a new initiative by the provincial government.

The Columbia Basin Broadband Corporation plans to lay 125 kilometres of fibre-optic cable from north of Nakusp to the Playmor Junction, bringing fast internet service to more than 20 communities and the rural areas between.

It’s one of two areas in the Kootenays to be early recipients of a $50 million initiative announced Friday

by Minister of Citizens’ Services Jinny Sims.

Columbia Basin Trust CEO Johnny Strilaeff opened the press conference in Castlegar with a reminder of the

not-too-distant past— the sound of a circa-1990s modem ring.

“I see some younger faces, likely that’s not something you’ve had to experience,” said Strilaeff.

While the modem may be gone, slow and intermittent internet access remains a problem for thousands of people living up the valley, he said.

“Residents have told us that increasing high-speed internet connectivity throughout the region is important to them,” said Strilaeff.

“Our partnership with the Province and local governments will expand affordable broadband availability in the Slocan Valley and South Country area.”

The Columbia Basin Trust’s broadband service arm, the Columbia Basin Broadband Corporation, will receive $4.8 million in provincial funds for the two projects (the South Country project is in the East Kootenay).

Dave Lampron, the chief operating officer of the CBBC, says they’ll now begin working with communities to move planning forward from the conceptual stage.

“We’re planning on using virtually ever method conceivable to deploy the fibre,” he said. “We’re going to be putting it up on poles, using waterways where we can, and trenching fibre in Crown land corridors — keeping the environmental and archaeological concerns in the forefront.”

Lampron says the roll-out will be linear — moving from one end of the Slocan valley to the other — though they haven’t decided which end they’ll start from. However, once begun, it won’t take long to complete.

“They’ll be moving about as fast as they can lay the fibre out,” he said.

“The province would like to see a March 31, 2020 completion date. It’s an aggressive timeline, but we’re going

to do everything we can to meet those timelines.”

The Slocan Valley project is estimated to cost $7.2 million in total.

The rest of the money for the project will be coming from the Trust, municipal and regional governments.

Lampron says the CBBC will work with existing local service providers to help them augment their service to the west side of the Slocan Valley and small communities like Vallican.

Local politicians praised the province for the initiative, saying they’ve been hearing complaints for years about the poor internet service up the valley.

Not only will the installation of fibre-optic line bring faster and more reliable internet service to the valley, officials say it will also lower the barrier for cellular service providers to enter the area. Most of the Slocan Valley has no cellphone service.

Cheetahs will not prosper in Crawford Bay The Canadian Press

The owners of two cheetahs will not be allowed to return the large African cats to the East Shore of Kootenay Lake to use them as ambassador animals promoting conservation of the endangered species.

The Environmental Appeal Board, which considers issues raised under B.C.’s Wildlife Act, has refused to overturn a 2017 ruling denying a permit to move the cheetahs to Crawford Bay. A team member with Cheetah Outreach in South Africa told the hearing that cheetahs are the most docile of the large cats and that Robin is blind but both he and Annie, “are well

socialized and suitable as ambassador animals.”

Linda Rosenlöf said she worked with the two felines in South Africa in the year after they were born and before they were shipped to Pfeifer and Plato in Ontario in 2013.

She testified there is no formal study program to become a cheetah trainer but the panel referred to a textbook co-written by cheetah biologist and handler Laurie Marker, who testified on behalf of B.C.’s director of wildlife.

“Cheetahs are not pets; they are wild animals and should be treated as such,” says the textbook Cheetahs: Biology and Conserva-

tion.

“Working with cheetahs requires extensive previous experience with animal training and handling. There are both courses and books that teach training practices that use positive reinforcement.

“The appellant, in short, has demonstrated a disregard for the B.C. laws and regulations regarding (species such as cheetahs,) and for safety procedures and protocols of his own design, and of others,” she writes.

“In conclusion, the panel cannot conceive of any additional ‘special circumstances’ that support this particular applicant receiving a possession permit for these particular prohibited species.”

Harrop II launched on Kootenay Lake Nelson Star Staff

The new Harrop cable ferry is now in service on Kootenay Lake.

The former ferry service held a maximum of 48 passengers and 21 vehicles. The new ferry, which plies between Harrop and Longbeach, can take 98 passengers and up to 24 vehicles.

The Harrop II is the third vessel to be delivered under a contract with Waterbridge Steel of Nakusp. In 2016, the company was awarded a $27.9-million contract to design and build four new cable ferries to serve the provinces inland routes. The final vessel, the Arrow Park III, is scheduled to be in service by the end of 2019. The Glade II was added to the fleet in 2018 and the Adams Lake II went into service in spring 2017.

Selkirk College to pitch new student housing on campus JOHN BOIVIN Castlegar News

Selkirk College is making a pitch to the provincial government for more student housing in Castlegar and Nelson.

College president Angus Graeme told Castlegar city council last week it’s applied for support for a $25 million construction project that would see up to 150 new beds for students.

“We have made a case we think is quite powerful, that affordable student housing in Castlegar and Nelson is in short supply,” Graeme told the Castlegar News. “And we are growing as an institution. So the existing facilities are full, and no longer able to keep up with demand.”

The project would see a 110-unit building in Castlegar, and 40-bed unit at the Silver King campus in Nelson. For flexibility, the college has also submitted a scaled-back version of the project, with just 75 beds in Castlegar and 25 in Nelson.

Graeme says housing is becoming a bottleneck to the institution’s growth.

He says the college has made its initial applications to the province, and is hoping to hear from Victoria sometime in the summer.

Once that piece is known, they can move on to design and further development of the idea.

“I honestly think we have a very good proposal, because the Kootenay-Boundary region is growing,” he says. “Our institution is growing. We have low unemployment right now in the region, and some great things happening, so housing becomes a real crunch.”

While it’s the start of a multi-year project, Graeme doesn’t see the need going away anytime soon.

“We don’t see Selkirk College shrinking in the future. It’s going to continue to grow, and successful institutions always have at least fairly robust on-campus student housing plans in place,” he says. “It’s only so far you can go with local rental markets.”

S

now may be lingering in the valleys longer than usual, but the Nelson Star’s recent story about snowfall levels being at 90 per cent of normal in our region is a reminder that the eye can deceive us. Length of winter and severity of cold do not equal a deep snowpack. Snow levels matter a lot to our ecosystem, and to the formation of hydropower.

Every two weeks, a report on reservoir conditions produced by BC Hydro lands in my inbox.

BC Hydro monitors snowfall accumulations across the Canadian portion of

the Columbia Basin, and works with U.S. counterparts to develop a river volume prediction for the spring melt across the entire system, so that they have a general idea of how much room will be needed in the reservoirs.

This year, they predict outflow to the Pacific at 88 per cent of normal, just a few percentage points off the B.C. River Forecast Centre’s snowfall measurement.

Some readers might be sick enough of snow to have stopped reading at this point. But snow is an essential part of the Columbia River’s power, and of the treaty. The Columbia has long been classi-

fied as a “snow-charged” system, with high spring flows, especially from our mountainous upper watershed, a gush that hydro engineers wanted to capture, hence the 1961 Columbia River Treaty, and our region’s largescale reservoirs.

Climate change projections for the international basin through to 2080 highlight the white wealth in our mountains. While most portions of the trans-boundary basin are predicted to grow warmer and drier in the coming decades, the Canadian portion will shift to longer shoulder seasons (more rain), but continue to accumulate snow, especial-

ly up high. Canada will provide lots of melting snow to the system. This is important.

At the time the treaty was signed, Canada’s contribution of water by volume was about 35 per cent. As the climate has warmed and snow accumulations have decreased south of the border, Canada’s share has climbed to an average of 40 per cent. In years of severe drought, it hits 50 per cent. Said another way: only 15 per cent of the entire watershed can provide half of the international river’s volume in today’s world.

between the U.S. and Canada were completed at the end of February.

These negotiations are private, with very little detailed information about the discussions reaching the general public. It’s a complex system, government representatives have explained. It’s going to take some time. The inner circle is made up of hydropower and flood control representatives (BC Hydro; U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Bonneville Power Administration); government representatives; diplomats; and hydropower technicians.

We have no way of knowing what’s actually going on behind those doors, though we can make educated guesses.

In my own study of the system over the past decade, and with my ear to the ground at conferences and public meetings, it seems like Canada holds some high value cards.

It appears the NDP government has straightened out the hydropower industry by eliminating the unfair incentives for the IPP projects. My study of treaty history has taught me a lot about corporate use of water. While I would like to believe that Mungall and others have worked out a way for “all of us [to] benefit from our public utility and our natural resources,” her comment rushes right past a remaining unfairness in the corporate water system.

This unfairness may continue if Site C goes ahead.

It could also be addressed with changes to the treaty, and with new policies for IPPS that support local accountability.

While this region where we live produces 50 per cent of power consumed in the province, we receive next to nothing back, i.e.,

a direct, annual share of the profits from hydropower that could repair some of the damage. The next-to-nothing we receive here does not make up for the permanent losses from dam construction, forced displacement of farmers and ranchers, and a starved aquatic ecosystem.

IPPs implemented with the preservation of local people and landscapes at the forefront of policy can keep water and its economic advantages close to home. I hope the government will find a different way to support IPPs with that in mind.

One thing for certain: the value of water has certainly not decreased over time.

A cultural cornerstone at the heart of Nelson’s performing arts scene, the Capitol Theatre is already Nelson’s premiere destination and facility choice for theatre-goers and renters alike. But what if they could do more?

The Capitol Theatre Restoration Society is seeking input into the need/desire for expansion of its current venue to include a multi-purpose black box theatre performance space.

A black box theatre (or experimental theatre) is a simple performance space that varies in size, usually with black walls and a flat floor and no raised stage area. Black box theatre spaces are typically designed to provide flexibility in the configuration of the stage and the audience seating.

A vibrant and growing interest in the performing arts and entertainment sector in Nelson has spurred the question of whether a gap exists for rental space that a black box theatre could fulfill.

As community interest is the first step, the Capitol has embarked on a feasibility study to evaluate whether there is a need or desire for such a space. Focus groups and interviews with existing renters and other stakeholders have revealed an exciting array of projected use for an additional theatre space.

And now, the Capitol is asking the public to weigh in. An online survey has been launched to seek input from our patrons.

News of the deadly attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand seemed surreal to Ilkay Cakirogullari, a student at Selkirk College.

“I have been to New Zealand, and I visited one of those mosques,” he said. He said his experience with that community was one of welcoming and sharing.

“They didn’t even know I was a Muslim, I just went into the mosque and they invited me in for tea. I spent a few days with them and they invited me to their homes.

“I can remember going through the mosques’ doors, you could just go in. This [shooter] was 28, like me, and he just walked through those doors too.

“It is so horrible, that community was so open to me.”

The attack killed 50 people, and was explicitly planned to fan the flames of racial hatred. It prompted condemnation around the world.

That’s why Cakirogullari joined nearly 100 others for a vigil Thursday at the Mir Peace Centre at the college.

She said the vigil was held for many reasons.

“It is expressing condolences, our shock and horror of the event, but also wanting to support all those who feel threatened by the rise of the alt-right, the white nationalist movement,” she says. “And thirdly, to reaffirm for ourselves there are things we can do and we are going to do them.”

Barron says one thing she would like to see is more dialogue and interaction between people from different cultures.

“We have a pretty diverse mix at the college, but that doesn’t always ensure people interact,” she says.

“So we have to create spaces, and opportunities. We have to create forums for dialogue and building friendship.”

One of those opportunities will be on Friday, when the college’s peace and justice studies students are holding a “community conversation” on embracing the city’s changing cultural and social landscape.

The meeting is from 4 to 6 p.m. at St. Rita’s Church in Castlegar.

A Nelson city councillor has started a national organization of municipal government elected officials to advance climate action in Canada.

Rik Logtenberg started the Climate Leadership Caucus (CLC) in January and says it has grown to 57 members from munic-

ipalities and regional governments across the country.

“Most of the action to deal with climate change has to happen at the municipal level,” Logtenberg told the Star. “This means hardening our infrastructure: we have to set the building standards to make buildings more efficient, set the traffic patterns that encourage people

to walk or bike, and develop the emergency management plan.”

But much of the funding to do these kinds of things has to come from the provincial or federal governments, so the caucus will serve as a lobby group, he said, and well as a networking body.

“We can network together and know what is working and

not working and get ideas from each other, make it quicker and more efficient.”

Mayor Lisa Helps of Victoria, one of seven mayors in the CLC, told the Star that 70 per cent of global emissions come from cities, and within cities, 50 per cent of emissions come from buildings, 40 per cent from transportation, and 10 per cent from

waste.

Buildings, transportation and waste are all under the jurisdiction of cities, she said, but she echoes Logtenberg in saying that cities don’t have the funding to deal properly with them.

There are other areas where cities’ jurisdiction is not so clear-cut, Helps said, and she hopes the caucus can help clarify this.

Nelson and Area Learning in Retirement is celebrating its 10th year. Since the first meeting in September 2009 at Selkirk College, Learning in Retirement, in partnership with the college and community, has been serving the needs of active, motivated retirees with weekly educational presentations, semester-long courses, field trips, physical activities, and social events. Its membership is now 437 strong.

The 10th anniversary was commemorated Saturday with a celebratory luncheon at Selkirk College’s Mary Hall. The luncheon acknowledged honorary members Birthe Achtner, Ida Hansen, and Susanne Raschdorf, 2018 Elder Care scholarship recipient (a Selkirk College health care assistant student) Avairy Myer; past and present Selkirk College community education coordinators Carol Zubick, Anni Holtby, and Christine Schmidt, and all members who have volunteered many hours of commitment, caring, and work to make Learning in Retirement a

successful adventure.

Angus Paton gave a toast of respect to all members. Margaret Hornby, Gloria Currie, Doug Sutherland and Jack Harrison spoke of the importance of Learning in Retirement to them. Norm Watts, Kamala Moore and Valerie Amies read heartfelt poems they created while part of the poetry interest group called the Kootenay Musers.

Birthe Achtner, one of the founders of Learning in Retirement and its first chair said, “It is truly wonderful to see and hear how Learning in Retirement has grown during these last 10 years. This success is due to all the work and ideas of the members; without their hard work it would have remained just an idea of a few people.” Following a showing of photos of the variety of Learning in Retirement activities, Mary Audia and Paul Prappas led the diners in a rousing chorus of songs.

A special 10th anniversary edition of the LiR Journal will be published in May and will feature historical information, memories, writing, and poetry of members, and many photos.

Nelson Leafs captain Jack Karran was named the team’s most valuable player and most popular player as voted by his teammates during the team’s annual end-of-season banquet.

The banquet is held to honour the players and coaching staff and thank the many volunteers who give tirelessly to make the Leafs’ hockey season a success.

The winning season saw the Leafs awarded the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League banner as the top team in the Neil Murdoch Division. Despite their regular season success, the Leafs bowed out in the second round of the playoffs when many players suffered late-season illness and veterans Michael LeNoury, Logan Wullum, and David Sanchez were all sidelined due to season ending injury.

Karran, from Grande Prairie, Alta., was also the team’s leading scorer and his leadership abilities continued into the playoffs and earned him the trophy as most valuable player in the playoffs.

Sanchez was recognized as the season’s most improved player.

Wullum was recognized as the most spirited player for the second year in a row.

LeNoury earned three awards. He was the winner of the citizenship award

for service to the community and the president’s award, as selected by the coaching staff. The president’s award is presented to the player who exemplifies integrity both on and off the ice, exhibits character as a player and is an example to his teammates for how the game should be played.

LeNoury, along with rookie Keenan Crossman, were jointly recognized with the award for dedication to both hockey and education.

Alternate captain and Nelson native Kaleb Comishin was recognized as the team’s best defenceman.

Castlegar native Sean Campbell was identified as the team’s unsung hero.

The trophy for the most sportsmanlikeplayer was given to Leafs rookie Emery Neilson.

Rookie of the year honours went to Kalem Hanlon.

In addition to the award winners selected by the coaching staff, two awards are bestowed by the board of directors. The title as the most dedicated volunteer was conferred this year on Nick Toner. Generally the first to arrive and the last to leave, Toner helps with the setup and take down on game days and never misses a chance to cheer on his Leafs.

With the 2018-19 season the board instituted a new honour. The board felt it necessary to honour an individual whose contributions have gone unnoticed in the past. By whatever

measure is used Nelson has a long and storied hockey history. The board is very aware that a real drawback with this type of citation is that in the many decades the team has been in operation, numerous people could be chosen for this honour. Sadly, the past contributions of some have long gone unnoticed and others may have been lost to time.

The distinguished service award will be given annually to an individual “for long-time dedication, service to and Support of the Nelson Leafs.” The inaugural winner of this accolade is Linda Lussier. For many years Lussier volunteered countless hours toward the operation of the hockey club. The club thanks her as well as the many others before her for their dedication to help make the Leafs what they are today.

Aside from these individual awards, recognition from the KIJHL was previously bestowed on goalie Caiden Kreitz as the top goalie for having the best save percentage in the league.

Head coach Mario DiBella was recognized by the KIJHL as the coach of the year in the Neil Murdoch Division.

This is a particularly significant award as the selection is made by all of the division coaches.

The Leafs who age out of the junior hockey ranks this year are Karran, LeNoury, Wullum and Kreitz. The Leafs wish these fine young men all the best in their future endeavours.

Vancouver choir with Nelson roots ‘will fill your heart’ SUBMITTED Nelson Star

The newest member of the Gracenote Vancouver choir organization will be performing in Kaslo on Friday and Nelson on Saturday.

“Kôr is a mixedvoice, a cappella choir bringing you lively and moving music,” says Laura Metcalfe, one of the group’s founders.

“Our shows are bright and dynamic,

introspective and delicate. And fun, always fun. Kôr’s songs will fill your heart and inspire you to join that choir you’ve been meaning to join for years, or at the very least sing louder in the shower.”

After spending their Nelson youth singing in Allison Girvan’s youth choir Corazón, Metcalfe, along with her friends Malaika Horswill and Gillian Lippert, founded Gra-

cenote in Vancouver in 2015.

It began as a group of 10 singers (including nine Corazón alumni) rehearsing in a cozy East Vancouver living room. Their first performance took place in a yoga studio where the 35 audience

members took off their shoes and sat on the floor.

Since then, the organization has outgrown the living room, toured throughout B.C., showcased at the Canadian Rocky Mountain Festival and, most recently, doubled in

size with the creation of Kôr, its second choir.

Gracenote visited Nelson twice in 2017 and 2018 with sold out shows at the United Church each time.

The Monashee Trio performs at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., presented by the Nelson Overture Concerts Society.

The Monashee Trio brings together three musicians from both sides of the Monashee Mountains. Nicola Everton, clarinet, has made the Kootenays home after a career spanning over 20 years as a member of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Chamber music has long a been a passion for Everton and since moving to the Kootenays, she has been involved as artistic director of the Kootenay Gallery concert series is a founding member of Selkirk Pro-Musica in Nelson, and is the coordinator for the Kootenay Chapter of the Health Arts Society, a professional concerts series for seniors in care.

Karmen Doucette is principal bassoonist with the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra. Doucette holds degrees in bassoon performance from the University of Calgary and Baylor University has served two terms as an artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre, and has also attained an artist diploma from the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto.

Akane Inoue Setiawan, oboe, is originally from Kyoto, Japan. She came to the United States to study at the Boston Conservatory of Music, the New England Conservatory and the Longy School of Music. Setiawan moved to Canada in 2013. She lives in Vernon and has performed with Vancouver Symphony, Okanagan Symphony, and Kamloops Symphony.

Together they highlight the distinctly warm sounds of a woodwind reed trio. The three musicians regularly meet while performing together with the Okanagan Symphony.

Tickets are available from the Capitol Theatre.

Admission is free for students 18 and under.

Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

Known for its abundant, graceful and feathery flowers, Astilbes are beautiful, long lived perennials when planted in the proper conditions.

The best spots in the garden are where the soil is consistently moist but not wet, slightly acidic, light and full of organic material, and where there is light sun to dappled shade. Astilbes can grow in deep shade but will not flowers as much, on the other hand full sun will bring out the blooms but by mid- summer the edges of the leaves will turn crispy and brown. They will grow in containers on the deck or patio, but make sure to use a

well drained soil mix to get an excellent supply of oxygen down to the roots. Astilbes love to be planted with ferns, hostas, lobelia and other shade and moisture loving plants! Astilbes like almost all other plants in the nursery come in a very wide range bloom times and colours, from the taller Astilbe x arendsii with colours ranging from lilac-purple, dark pink, and a beautiful carmine-rose. After arriving in Calgary, he heard about a cook job in Nelson with the Prestige Inn Lakeside Resort and took the Greyhound to the West Kootenay where he started his new life in 2012 as a training cook cutting potatoes and cleaning tables.

Ciraj and Martina grew up a block away from each other in their south India town. They were married just prior to coming to Canada and despite Martina working on her PhD in physics, she followed her love to a new home and started a family.

Ciraj started his career as a chef in India with the Sheraton hotel group and eventually moved on to work for Carnival Cruise Lines where he became the head chef overseeing 137 cooks who prepared three meals a day for up to 6,400 guests.

After eight years with the cruise line, Ciraj wanted a less stressful pace and sought a new start.

He chose Canada.

“Canada is a peaceful country,” he says.

Business Though Ciraj’s talents in the kitchen quickly propelled him to becoming a business partner in West Coast Grill where he traveled to the five different locations around the province, the couple started their own venture on Anderson Street in Nelson when they opened the Kootenay Tamil Kitchen in 2017.

With a delicious menu that leaves you feeling healthier after a meal than when you arrived, they quickly found a supportive following. Earlier this year, they moved to 660 Baker St. because they wanted a bigger kitchen and more seating capacity.

“We don’t feel like this is a business, we feel like we are feeding our friends and family,” says Martina. “We take full responsibility for their experience once they come into the restaurant. We are proud of this and we work hard to make sure that happens.”

Earlier this month, Ciraj took another step in his new Canadian life when he became the owner-operator of the West Coast Grill in the Prestige Inn Lakeside Resort.

With two young children, Martina is now the main force behind the food and service on Baker Street where the Tamil culture of kindness, calmness

and sharing shines through.

“I came to Nelson because of my love for him and I wanted to raise a family here,” says Martina. “Nelson is God’s gift for both of us… it’s the perfect place for us.”

Earlier this month at the Vancouver Convention Centre, Patkau Architects received the Wood Innovation Award for the project’s complex, curvilinear geometry, and the diversity and flexibility of using wood.

Since its inception, Rotary has evolved with the overall goal of peace in the world. Peace and Conflict Resolution/Prevention is more than just the stoppage of war or the absence of violence.

Peace is ensuring there is justice for all.

Rotarians have refused to accept the idea of conflict as a way of life. At the Havana, Cuba Rotary Convention in 1940, “Rotarians adopted the resolution calling for ‘freedom, justice, truth, sanctity of the pledged word, and respect for human rights”. That resolution became the frame work for the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Almost all RI and Rotary Foundation programs have a pathway to promote understanding between people of different countries and cultures and within our own communities.

The resulting projects that develop provide in-country assistance and training, provides those communities with improved socioeconomical status and can foster international understanding. Through these service projects, at times planned and implemented under difficult situations, our members are taking action to address these underlying factors. A reduction in International and civil conflict, poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of Chris Chart, a member of the rotary Club of nelson, access to education, and unequal distribution of building a house in guatemala. resources are important steps towards positive peace outcomes.

Peace and Conflict Resolution/Prevention solutions are being expressed by Rotarians through desire, personal and financial commitment and actions. Club, District and Global Grants Projects provide the funding backbone for change. Through actions, Rotarians are paving the highway to peace around the world. A Rotarian’s water project in Africa is also an offer of peace and friendship. A Peace Scholar in Cambodia working towards peace and justice in Asia will make inroads towards peaceful solutions. Rotary Youth Exchanges takes our future leaders to foreign countries where they discover more than what is in their backyard. Many other Rotary initiatives have a direct impact on understanding between people and countries.

student in Germany Exchange in Germany has been a wonderful experience up to this point, and it doesn’t appear that it will be getting any less exciting any time in the near future. Despite the expected difficulties in adjusting to life in a completely different country, meeting new people, going to a new school, and having to learn a new language, I haven’t found myself unhappy or bored for even a moment.

Even though I’ve only been here 6 months, I feel that I’ve already done more than I ever have in a full year beforehand. I spent a week in Berlin, seeing the monuments, architecture, and too many museums to count. I went and stayed in a cabin in the far south of Bavaria, and hiked through the alps. I’ve gone skiing and snowshoeing in Austria. And I explored Munich and as many of the towns around it with my closest friends from the other exchange students.

School here is about as fun as any school is, but I try to make the most of it by speaking with my friends, and trying to get as much as I can out of the sometimes confusing lessons. The time in my day to day life that I don’t spend in school I normally spend with my host family, or with my friends, going to town or doing whatever activities the weather is suitable for.

In the near future I thankfully won’t be having much downtime, with at least three large trips coming up in the next months, including a week in Austria, skiing, a trip to the Rotary International Conference in Hamburg, and a tour of all of Germany that will take up the entirety of April. I am really loving being on exchange so far and I expect it will only be getting better.

My name is Jackie Nedelec and I am in need of help and I do not have a lot of time. Due to accelerated renovations at our current location we have until March 29 to locate a space to continue with Nelson’s 8th Annual April Shoe Drive. Our charity assists people in need first in our community and locally. Then British Columbia, expanding to include Canada, and then abroad. We feel strongly that “No one in Canada should want for a decent pair of shoes”.

This huge need for footwear is what we strive to support.

The operating and storage space we are searching for could be the size of a two-car garage. Heat is not of importance.

What is suitable is a walk-in basement, warehouse, or any vacant location with lighting, air, and a door to the outside where a delivery truck could pick up our boxes of footwear.

The donations we collect are delivered off and on year ‘round to the Women’s Centre, Kid Sports, Stepping Stones, and the Club House to name a few. As well we support the Committee on Homelessness on Connect Day at which last year we distributed over 300 pairs of winter boots to those in need.

If you can, please suggest a possible space to assist us to continue these heart-felt events by helping us and this Charity so we may continue serving others. We carry insurance to cover our events. Please give some thought to this request and call 250-229-5265 if you think of a place that might stop this event from coming to an end.

RDCK issues advisory for South Slocan water system SUBMITTED Special to the Nelson Star

The Regional District of Central Kootenay has issued a water quality advisory for users on the South Slocan water system. Recent testing shows that current water quality is now fair due to increasing turbidity (cloudiness) as a

result of snow melt.

While health risks are considered low, the RDCK and Interior Health recommend that young children, the elderly, people with weakened immune systems, and anyone seeking additional protection drink boiled water or a safe alternative until further notice. For

these at-risk populations, water intended for drinking, washing fruits or vegetables, making beverages or ice, or brushing teeth should be boiled for one minute.

The system has about 50 active connections.

It draws water from Watts’ Brook and Smokey Creek as a secondary source.

I bought a Mini Split A/c system on the internet. Will you install it for me?

o. But I will tell you how to do it with a few simple tools. First, make sure you have a licenced electrician for the hookup and to run the wires.

Then purchase the tools and supplies you will need. Start with a vacuum pump, A/C gauge set, vacuum gauge calibrated to 500 microns, nitrogen and the regulator to use it, an acetylene torch, silfos, the adaptors for the gauges that fit with the unit you bought, a stem removal tool is handy, stuff to drill a 2” hole, a level, and the normal hand tool stuff.

Pick a spot for the condenser where it is above the ground (for condensate ice build up in the wintertime), not pointing at your neighbour’s bedroom window, not where icicles will damage it in the wintertime, or the ice produced won’t cover a walkway.

Consider a spot where you can grow a green noise barrier around the condenser. Wires and line sets should not “bridge” high to the building. Use Fortress ducting and a level. Don’t forget, condensate removal is a prime concern on the inside units.

We can do it as well, but for warranty issues, supply chain issues, and material quality issues we need to supply the units.

What are closing cost’s?

o satisfy a closing cost condition from a lender when you are applying for a mortgage you typically have to demonstrate your ability to pay an additional 1.5% of the purchase price, this is on top of your down payment. The 1.5% is simply a benchmark amount and can be a little more or less given each individual application.

But not everyone knows what closing costs entail. TD recently released an interesting survey that touches on this. It found that 13% of first-time buyers “overlooked some of the one-time fees associated with buying a home, such as inspection fees and land transfer costs, and 6% didn’t budget for anything beyond the down payment and monthly mortgage payment.”

That’s partly a failing of the mortgage advisers counselling those borrowers.

Closing cost’s can include: Inspection fee’s, land transfer cost’s, property taxes, lawyer fee’s, appraisal fee’s and utility hook ups.

Nelson wins first round of Strong Towns competition SUBMITTED Special to the Nelson Star

Nelson won out over last week’s rival, Amesville, Ohio, in the Strongest Town in America contest, and moves on to the next round.

This week the city is competing against Guthrie, Okla.

Nelson is one of 16 finalists in the online contest, a monthlong, bracket-based competition designed to spotlight communities from around the world that are building enduring financial resilience at the local level and actively embodying the Strong Towns approach to economic growth and development.

Towns that make the cut will be announced on Friday. In the weeks that follow, towns that make each successive round will be asked to take part in a series of interactive challenges designed to highlight how financially strong they really are.

The other second round contests are: Delray Beach, Fla. vs.

Pensacola, Fla.; Erwin, Tenn., vs. Safety Harbor, Fla.; and New Rochelle, NY, vs. Portsmouth, NH. Past winners of the Strongest Town competition have included Muskegon, Mich., Traverse City, Mich., and Carlisle, Penn.

The winner of the Strongest Town 2019 contest will receive

a commemorative plaque and a visit and interactive community presentation with Charles Marohn, Strong Towns founder, president and author of the forthcoming Strong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to Rebuild American Prosperity.

In the first round,with eight pairs of towns competing, there

were 8,000 votes cast overall, and in the voting between Nelson and Amesville, Nelson got 80 per cent of the votes.

Nelson was nominated by Tammy Everts, John Palozzi, city councillors Rik Logtenberg and Keith Page, and former councillors Anna Purcell and Paula Kiss.

A Prayer to the Earth in the sacred dance tradition of the east, there is a simple movement which happens at the beginning and end of a prayer dance. it is called Bhumi Pranam – an expression of gratitude to Mother earth for letting us dance on Her. it is an invitation to remember what is sacred in whatever way is meaningful for us.

For me, this prayer movement has many layers of meaning. it is about remembering and acknowledging my relationship with the earth. it reminds me about the importance of caring and consideration of others— and that everyday i have the opportunity to practice this.

The movements and prayer

bring me into the present moment, reminding me that the practice of Yoga is about awareness – awareness of what’s happening in both my inner and outer environments. awareness of the consequences of my actions. awareness that each of us is an example for others—our friends, families, communities— and the tremendous responsibility that comes with this.

There are times when i get busy and caught up in the dance of life and forget about my intentions to bring awareness into my choices. a simple practice like Bhumi pranam or breath or standing still in tadasana, (the Mountain) brings me into the present moment and

John and Stacy DeVries are excited to bring the 2018 Banff Mountain Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award winning documentary, The Bikes of Wrath, to the Front Room in Nelson on April 5 and 6.

All proceeds go to the couple’s Get Schooled project to raise money for 54 orphans in Uganda to get off the streets and into school.

This heart-warming film highlights five Australian friends as they seek to gain a better understanding of the Dust Bowl through an

attempt to cycle from Oklahoma to California in honour of the westward migration undertaken by the Joad family from John Steinbeck’s novel The Grapes of Wrath.

With no support vehicle, no training and “no real idea,” they set off on a 30-day cycling adventure, challenging themselves to survive on $420 (the modern-day equivalent of the Joads’ $18 in the 1930s) and whatever their busking might yield.

Both screenings begin at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at get-schooled.org. There will be door prizes and refreshments by donation as well as some merchandise for sale.

Betty Pozniko passed away peacefully on March 18, 2019 at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson with he family by her side.

She is survived by her brother Mike Kooznetso, her children George, Marcy & Gord Koochin, Allen and Paul.

5 Grandchildren, 7 Great grandchildren and many Nieces and Nephews.

She will be deeply missed and we will love her forever forever.

Stanley John Zdebiak January 19, 1946 - March 5, 2019 It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Stanley John Zdebiak on March 5, 2019, at the Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, BC. Born in January 1946 in Willingdon, Alberta and later moving to Vernon, BC where he spent his childhood. In 1963 he travelled with friends to Prince George where he met a shy little waitress. Four years later they were married. Stan and Lois moved to Nelson, BC in 1973 to the small community of Blewett where they raised their three children. After becoming empty nesters, they retired and moved to the community of Shoreacres, built a home by the water, and hosted coee every morning while watching the birds and wildlife from their windows.

A man of integrity and strength, generous and always willing to lend a helping hand and share his knowledge. Stan created community and lasting friendships wherever he went. Stan loved the outdoors, hunting, ďŹ shing and camping with his friends and family, always with his favourite and faithful companion “Dizzyâ€? by his side. We all fondly remember his quick wit and his detailed telling of the many stories of his life. He will be missed by Cody, his young friend and hunting partner who was a very important part of his life, and Ryan who he treated as one of his own. To those who knew him, he formed a special place in our hearts.

He worked for many years throughout the Kootenays as an electrician with the IBEW. Volunteering many hours as acting IBEW president and mentoring many. He was known by his fellow members for his hard work and humour.

Stan will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Lois and his children, Rene Esovolo (Lance), Rachel Zdebiak, and Geri Eisner (Brent), and his grandchildren, Ashley Zdebiak (Curtis), Craig Mcknight (Olivia), Cynthia Zdebiak (Kirk), Hailey Eisner and Brandon Eisner, and Great grandchild Sighlas Ashmead. We will enjoy sharing your life stories with our children as well as the two new great-grandchildren Baz, and Jaxton who are expected in June. We will miss you Grumpy Grandpa.

He will remain an imprint in each of us and will live on by inuencing the way we move forward in life. FulďŹ lled, loved, strong and teaching the next generation what he instilled in each of us. He will always be remembered as a kind and hardworking man who loved his family and made his friends feel comfortable and welcome.

Special thanks to the wonderful nurses and sta at Kootenay Lake Hospital and for Dr. Milde for your wonderful bedside manner and endless support.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Doug left this world peacefully on March 21, 2019, in Nelson, BC after a courageous battle with cancer.

Doug was born in Tisdale, Saskatchewan and moved to Nelson in 1949.

In 1958, Doug started an apprenticeship at the Nelson Daily News. Doug married the love of his life Shirley Sommerville in 1963, and in 1964 received his journeyman pressman certification and moved to Seattle, Washington to take a job at the Seattle Times.

Doug and Shirley moved back to Nelson in 1970 with three children in tow. Upon returning to Nelson, Doug drove semi trucks for both Kelly Douglas and Malkins before starting work in 1977 with the Ministry of Highways, where he remained until retiring in 1997. In his retirement, Doug enjoyed the freedom of spending time with family and friends. He spent most mornings dialing in his investments and exchanging emails with his pals, and could often be found keeping up with his sports on tv, and having a couple “socials� at “the club�.

Doug was a man of integrity who led by example. He was honest, thoughtful, dependable, and had a great sense of humour. He worked hard and played hard, and was a mentor, advisor, and treasured friend to many. Doug and Shirley’s love and respect for each other was beautiful and inspirational. They spent 60 years together and truly cherished each other to the very end. Doug lived a full and meaningful life with no regrets, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Doug is survived by his best friend and loving wife Shirley, his three children; Gerry (Shelly) Tennant, Jim (Karyn) Tennant, Anita (Pete) Johnson, and seven grandchildren; Ryan, Megan, Tyson, Macy, Brendan, Courtney, Mikaela. Also surviving him are his brother Bob (Donna) Tennant, sisters Donna (Ray) Charest, Judy (Brian) Austin, Kathy (Roger) Derasp, brothersin-law Harry (Janet) Sommerville, George Heer, sisters-in-law Erma (Les) Sommerville, Pat (Bryan) Sommerville, Sandy (Greg) Munch, and many nieces and nephews.

Doug was predeceased by his father and mother Thomas and Betty Tennant, sister Jean Beasley, nieces Sharalee Schneider and Rhonda Frederiksen, brother John and sister-in-law Doreen, mother-in-law and father-in-law James and Lillian Sommerville, sister-in-law Kathleen Heer, and nephew Darren Heer.

The family would like to thank Dr. Lee MacKay for his compassionate and respectful care of “Dougie�.

A memorial service for Doug will take place on April 6, 2019, at 1PM at the Bethel Christian Centre, 623 Gordon Rd. Nelson BC.

f you suffer from insomnia, an annual report can be just the thing to summon those fence-jumping sheep.

When it comes to the Nelson Public Library’s annual report to the community, however, there’s nothing soporific or sheep-like about it. That’s because we’re not followers; we’re leaders.

The report is fresh off the photocopier, engagingly designed, and spritely in content.

Be still, your beating heart! I’m going to unpack it for you, now.

The library has three key strategic priorities, beginning with Community Needs. This year we furthered that goal in two ways: through our ever-expanding Library of Things, which includes radon detectors, pedometers, kill-a-watt devices, exploration backpacks and, now, ukuleles (10 of them,

We also added an online training service — Gale Courses — offering free, instructor-led learning in technology, writing, management, languages, and dozens more. This is definitely one to check out.

In addressing our priority Spaces to Connect, we

changed the layout of the main floor for better light and ease of movement; we added more public computers (and they are always in use!), and we created more comfortable seating spaces and more work areas.

Our efforts to meet our goal of Sustainability is perhaps less obvious than a pink ukulele. These include advocacy for public libraries, building strong intergovernmental relationships, and finding innovative partnerships and funding opportunities, as well as our program-targeted grant applications, working with partners to help us deliver great services and programs.

The report offers 2018 highlights of our key departments.

Here’s what we said: We held 26 programs for adults, including author readings, informational evenings, technology workshops, and book discussions with our partners, Amnesty international and the Kootenay Co-op.

We broke down barriers with our Human Library, offering folks access to life-changing conversations with people in our community.

Thanks to a partnership with Columbia Basin Trust and Telus, we launched a Teen Tech workshop series on photo editing, DJing, HTML and more. We found great ways to bring people together through a mother-daughter book club, Granny Goose at Lakeview Village, and our New to Nelson potluck. The library is all about connection.

The Summer Reading Club for kids isn’t new — it just gets better every year. Attendance at the programs totaled more than 750. And twice as many students participated in the Reading Link Challenge, a quiz-type competition for Grade 4 and 5 students, as the previous year — nearly 100!

We supported digital literacy in our community, helping members get online, use social media, and download eBooks and eAudiobooks, and we offered one-on-one sessions to help with all kinds of technology questions with the help of staff and community volunteers. It is not always easy to keep up with the demand, but we do our best to be responsive to community needs as tech-

nology evolves.

So what about the numbers?

Here are just a few to keep your sheep at bay.

Our 11,332 members, as well as visitors, made 146,500 library visits last year. There were 205,760 items borrowed and 24,486 eBook and eAudiobook downloads. Our public computer logins totaled 22,402; online training sessions and database access totaled nearly 35,000. And our 250 programs for folks aged 0 to 99 attracted 6,752 participants.

There’s no moss on the Friends of the Library either: our volunteer fundraising group clearly never slept, raising $18,856 through book sales, grants, and donations.

If sleep is elusive, our annual report — available online or in hard copy at the library — won’t be your ticket to lala-land. But we might have a book or two that can help you out. At press time, there were no plans to begin lending woolly ungulates.
