By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Panorama Mountain Resort has extended their ski season thanks to Mother Nature continuing to grace the mountain with ample fresh, white snow.

The slopes will be open until Sunday, April 21st, a full additional week. The total snowfall is already approaching the annual average with 442 cm as of February 28th, compared to 402 cm in 2018, and forecasts continue to look promising.

Steve Paccagnan, president and CEO, says the decision to open longer comes after requests from skiers and riders in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba.

“Prairie guests have made a tradition of spending Easter on the warm side of the Rockies. As an independent resort, we can make decisions quickly and we want to give everyone the chance to make the most of the incredible snow on the mountain,” says Mr. Paccagnan.

Mr. Paccagnan sat down with the Pioneer to talk about the season and some of the exciting things going on at the local hill. He says he is pleased with how the resort is moving forward on a strategic vision set over the past five years. More than $1,000,000 was invested in snowmaking and slope grooming technology heading into this winter.

“There’s been a significant effort focused on our core product,” Mr. Paccagnan says. “At the end of the day, it’s all about the skiing and riding and snow quality, and everything that leads up to it.”

From before the first snowflake touches the mountain, Panorama is working on trail grooming. They used to do summer grooming by hand to remove brush along trails; last summer they broke in a new, low impact summer grooming machine that’s working like a charm.

Then come November, crews were ready to start making snow with new equipment that is not only more efficient but also makes better snow too, reports Mr. Paccagnan. What used to take almost a whole day to get up and running is now activated and ready to make snow in 15 minutes.

“The snow is drier, it’s easier to groom, plus we’ve also invested in new grooming technology,” he says.

The investment is paying off, with Mr. Paccagnan describing this season as a tipping point for international markets for the preseason race training schedule. Thanks to the higher quality early snow, Panorama attracted race teams from Switzerland, Austria, South Korea, and even Russia, starting in early November.

Expansions into more expert-level terrain, with easier access thanks to the MonsterX, a custom-built 13 passenger Snowcat that moves skiers and riders from Outback Ridge to the top of Goldie Plateau, has continued to attract riders seeking big turns and fresh powder. Panorama

has always been known as a great resort, with its great vertical and acreage, Mr. Paccagnan poses, but figures it has gotten more notoriety thanks to these expansions.

Skiers and snowboarders continue to come to the resort from around the world, notably from Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Germany, as well as from eastern Canada and, regionally. Locally, the resort has fostered some great partnerships with the school district, bringing kids to the hill to learn the basics in a fun and safe learning environment. Panorama also has a great partnership with the Shuswap Indian Band, as well as the three ski clubs that call Panorama home. And Mr. Paccagnan praises his dedicated core team for making the resort the growing success it is today.

World Championships 2022 Panorama was announced the successful bid for the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships for March 2022. Hundreds of top international athletes will descend on the Columbia Valley for the prestigious alpine event for athletes between 16 and 20 years of age. Anywhere from 50 to 60 countries will be represented, with likely 300 to 400 athletes attending.

Mr. Paccagnan is hoping to have the event televised to showcase Invermere and the Columbia Valley to the globe. After this ski season ends, Panorama will begin strategizing in earnest for the World championships, and will be reaching out to community partners to help achieve a successful event.

Rescued hiker urges for Search And Rescue funding renewal

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com In her first interview after spending three days lost on Jumbo Pass with her poodle Maverick, Louise Baxter praised the throngs of BC Search and Rescue volunteers who dropped everything in their personal and professional lives last August to find her and return her safely to her family.

“I was by myself not understanding all that was going on for me,” she said, adding that she remains awed by the scale of the search effort and the number of people who raced to help.

The mission involved more than 35 volunteers from eight search teams, three RCMP detachments, three helicopters, four search dogs and a drone.

The search to find Ms. Baxter occurred while BC’s Search and Rescue teams were funded through a threeyear arrangement with the provincial government that provided the Columbia Valley Search and Rescue (CVSAR) with $80,000 annually. CVSAR search man-

ager Steve Talsma said the provincial funding is running out, with the tap shutting off at the end of March.

He said the Valley’s Search and Rescue operation is “in an OK position to get through this year” but he is concerned about the future. A typical call takes CVSAR a few hours and runs from $3,000 to $5,000, but longer and more complex missions can run up to $100,000, he said. CVSAR also has costs to train volunteers and maintain equipment to allow volunteers to be effective in their roles.

“We’ve had a good three-year run, and now we’re going to have some work ahead of us,” he said.

Both he and Ms. Baxter hope to see the provincial funding resuscitated.

“How do I feel about it?” Ms. Baxter asked. “At any moment it could be someone that you know that needs (to be rescued), especially in the kind of area that we live.”

Ms. Baxter knows how quickly fates can shift for those out enjoying the mountains.

She had only intended to leave her hiking group briefly to take Maverick to a lookout point. Then the

weather changed, obscuring the path she had travelled.

“I was convinced I knew how to get back to the cabin, and so I was trying to find my way back there. But I was already totally lost. I was on the wrong side, the opposite side, of the mountain on the West Kootenay side, which I had no idea,” she said. “At first it was like ‘I can’t believe I got myself lost’ and then it was terrifying.”

To calm down, she prayed and repeated a mantra she learned in her yoga class as the days turned into nights and the nights turned back into days.

Hope also came from above when helicopters circled overhead, when she ended up on a road and when a vehicle rumbling in the distance drew close before the occupants welcomed her inside.

Ms. Baxter travelled from Cranbrook to share her appreciation in person at the Columbia Valley Search and Rescue annual general meeting on Wednesday, February 27th.

“I just wanted to really thank everyone for what you do,” she told the volunteers, adding that she is deeply grateful to everyone who gave up three days of their lives to help her keep hers.

New housing development proposed for Invermere’s 10th Ave.

“It’s all you hear in town that there is no affordable housing,” she said. “For the last nine years I’ve been sort of listening to the same message over and over and over again.”

As the managing partner with Generation Homes in Invermere, Ms. Scott-Nyuli is hoping to build “an adorable little community” of 30 units on the vacant property at 606 10th Avenue. The strata units will be around 900 square feet. The basement units will be walkout suites and can be made to be wheelchair friendly. Some of the units will be held as long-term rentals.

Ms. Scott-Nyuli wants to provide homes for sale

under $300,000 both for those who are downsizing and for those who are looking to get into the housing market for the first time.

“Very shortly we’re going to have a lot of people who are not ready for Columbia House or Ivy House but who are not able to maintain a large family home,” she said. “It’s perfect for the aging market because it’s right next to the hospital, it’s right next to the pharmacy. If you can’t drive anymore... you can walk to grocery stores, you can walk to all the amenities.”

She also sees the units as a step forward for firsttime buyers and single mothers.

“It’s very expensive to get started here so this becomes the stepping stone to home ownership,” she said. “If you can start somewhere, even if it’s smaller than maybe you wanted or it doesn’t have all the amenities you want, you get to start somewhere and then start building your equity, building your life back up...

While Invermere council was initially lukewarm about Generation Homes’ rezoning application, they’ve warmed to the idea now that they’ve received more information.

“I was fairly impressed with them when they stopped in,” Councillor Greg Anderson said, adding that he thinks the development could be a good opportunity for the community.

Mayor Al Miller said the proposal from Generation Homes is “going to change the landscape there” and that he looks forward to hearing what residents think about the proposed development.

“At least half of (the units) are going to be quite accessible friendly. I certainly appreciate seeing that,” he said.

There will be a public hearing about Ms. Scott-Nyuli’s plans for Generation Homes at the District of Invermere council chambers on March 19th at 7 p.m.

By Katie Watt intern@columbiavalleypioneer.com On Sunday March 10th, you can get stoked about mountain slopes by visiting a film fundraiser for the Mountain of Hope Society. This fundraiser, organized by Panorama ski patrol, will feature the film This Mountain Life.

This Mountain Life is an award winning film that features the story of two women, Martina Halik and her mother Tania Halik, who conquered a “2300-kilometre ski trek from Canada to Alaska through the treacherous Coast Mountains; a journey that has been completed only once before, and never by a female duo.” The film is captivating enough on its own, but what makes it even more interesting is that the story begins right here in Invermere where the mother-daughter pair call home.

“This event is going to be great because so many people here know them; they used to be on ski patrol at Panorama,” says Fiona Pickett, one of the event organizers.

Film night supports Mountain of Hope

• On Tuesday, February 26th at 11:40 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP and East Kootenay Traffic Services responded to single vehicle collision on Highway 93 just north of Kootenay Crossing. A loaded logging truck was southbound on Highway 93 when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and struck a concrete barrier which resulted in the driver losing part of his load and coming to rest in a ditch. Traffic was stopped for a period of time while crews removed the truck and trailer. The driver was not injured in this incident.

• On Wednesday, February 27th, a 20-year-old male was arrested on outstanding warrants for failing to report to Probation and for theft under $5,000.

The male was remanded in custody until March 11th.

• On Monday, February 25th, a blue 2011 Honda Civic was stolen from a residence on Timberidge Road in Windermere sometime over the previous night. The vehicle was recovered later the same evening in Canmore. Residents are reminded to not leave their keys in their vehicles and to lock their doors to prevent crimes of opportunity.

I mentioned this to the Panorama ski patrol manager, who is also on the board for the Mountain of Hope Society, and he totally agreed.”

The film will be shown at the Columbia Valley Centre and all proceeds will go to the Mountain of Hope Society. Doors will open at 6:30 pm, and the film will begin at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the event are available for purchase at Ullr Bar and Syndicate Board Shop in Invermere, or at the Panorama Ski Patrol Clinic. Pre-purchased tickets are $10 each, and door price tickets are $12.

DOI raises idea of lowered voting age at Council meeting

BC Green Party leader Andrew Weaver has been advocating for lowering the provincial voting age to 16 and has brought his bill forward for consideration multiple times, including in March 2018. At that time Premier John Horgan indicated that he was open to the idea of letting 16-year-olds vote.

Councillor Ute Juras said that if the provincial voting age is lowered, “maybe those 16-year-olds can prove they’re old enough not only to vote but also to run for office.”

The District of Invermere (DOI) is asking members of the Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Government (AKBLG) – the group that represents municipalities and electoral areas at the regional level – to support lowering the voting age for municipal, provincial and federal elections from 18 to 16.

After much discussion at their meeting on Tuesday, February 26th, Mayor Al Miller opposed the motion while all four DOI councillors supported it.

Time to change the voting age

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Invermere Council is advocating for the voting age to be lowered to 16 for municipal, provincial, and federal elections (see story page 5). The head of politics at Cambridge University, Professor David Runciman, discussed this topic recently. He made the argument that lowering the voting age to 16 is not even radical enough. In an episode on his podcast Talking Politics (December 5th 2018) Professor Runciman pointed out that there is a cap at the younger end of voters, but not at the older end, leading to a natural imbalance in voting.

“You can carry on voting until the day you die and there is no test. You could be frankly demented and still get to vote, which is as it should be. So young people are the losers here,” he said.

I read this week’s op-ed (February 28th) by Ms. Ditson and was struck by a couple of things. First, the concern she has for a perceived threat to PM Trudeau.

Hmmm, a mighty long way from a protest poster to a credible threat on someone’s life, but kudos for following up and asking the RCMP. I would think that Sgt. Kakuno’s response was correct. Secondly, regarding Michael Wernick’s testimony to the House of Commons justice committee. Ms. Ditson focused on Mr. Wernick’s opening remarks about his worries of a future assassination. Mr. Wernick was there to testify about whether or not our Attorney General had been pressured by the Prime Minister, his staff, the Privy Council staff and the Finance Minister’s staff.

What Mr. Wernick did was the oldest trick in the book for a magician. Divert the audience’s attention before doing your sleight of hand. Obviously, in Ms Ditson’s case, it worked. Rather than reporting on a “non-partisan” public servants’ revelation that he was part of an attempt by the PM to avoid prosecuting one of the Liberal Party’s best friends and donors, she

took the bait and has now done what he expected.

The very fact that the highest public servant in Canada is taking a political side because of some Quebec jobs and, at that time, two upcoming elections, should have been the story. What are all other public servants to take from this? Is it now OK to boost the party you like and throw roadblocks in front of the ones you don’t?

And finally, after the testimony on Wednesday of Jody Wilson Raybould about the unrelenting pressure put on her by the PM, his staff, privy council staff and the Finance Minister’s staff, all of which were trying to undermine the Attorney General’s decision to not interfere with the “Independent Public Prosecutor’s” decision to prosecute SNC Lavalin, will Ms. Ditson perhaps write another op-ed this coming week to set the record straight? I have to wonder if she took all of Ms. Wilson Raybould’s testimony to Sgt. Kakuno if he might give her an opinion on whether or not the PM and all his minions should be investigated for attempted obstruction of justice?

I read with a chuckle the piece on snowplows by Penny MacNeil (letter to the editor February 28th). I have a similar story. One evening about 11:15 p.m., I heard a snowplow drive by my house. I thought that to be

strange as there was not a flake of snow on the ground. Within the next 15 minutes that same truck went by three more times. I do not know what he was plowing but it was good for a laugh.

It has been 12 years since the Valley GoGo Sisters held their first St. Patrick’s Day Tea and Bake Sale. Every year since 2007, the money raised has been donated to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s (SLF) Grandmothers Campaign.

The Stephen Lewis Foundation launched the Grandmothers Campaign in March 2006, in response to the emerging crisis faced by African grandmothers as they struggled to care for millions of children orphaned by the AIDS pandemic. Without hesitation or complaint, Africa’s grandmothers have stepped in to care for them.

Currently it is estimated that there are almost 11 million AIDS orphans under the age of 15 in sub-Saharan Africa.

The SLF Grandmothers Campaign are equal partners with grassroots organizations of African grandmothers, who in turn strive to nurture, feed and educate their grandchildren. They work to generate income, teach their

According to Statistics Canada, household debt is currently around 177.5 per cent of disposable income. This means that the average Canadian owes about $1.78 for every $1 earned in income.

With interest rates still near historical lows, many people wonder how harmful debt really is. The answer lies in a simple debt analysis, which will be described in this article.

Good and bad debt It’s widely reported that about 70 per cent of Canadians carry some form of debt; however, not all debt is created equal. Mortgages, business loans and investment loans are often referred to as good debt, because of their potential to earn income and/or capital gains.

Consumer debt is less productive, and therefore, generally considered to be “bad” debt. This would be defined as consumables and many heavily depreciable assets that don’t earn income, or help a person earn income, such as clothing, restaurants, hot tubs and vehicles. Currently, the average Canadian owes about $23,271 in consumer debt.

The true cost The cost of debt can be thought of as two components. The first and most obvious are interest and other costs associated with carrying debt. With interest rates as high as 30 per cent for some retail credit cards, it doesn’t take long for the numbers to add up.

The second component is likely even more significant: the opportunity cost. Simply put, the money used to pay off debt could have been invested instead.

For example, consider a 30-year-old with credit card debt. He decides to pay it off in one year, which would cost him $500 per month, including interest. When his credit card is paid off, he decides to contribute the $500 per

month into a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP).

The RRSP grows at a rate of 6 per cent annually until he is 60 and decides to retire. His RRSP is worth $456,071.

Now consider this 30-year-old didn’t have any credit card debt and therefore, started investing one year earlier.

If he had, his RRSP would be worth $489,628. In other words, the cost of his debt was only $6,000 but the opportunity cost was $33,557.

How to reduce debt There are a few ways to reduce debt. The first and most obvious is to pay it down as fast as possible. This is a good option for smaller amounts, or people with high cash flow.

The second is to consolidate higher-cost debts at a lower rate, either with a personal loan or line of credit. It may even be possible to consolidate personal debts with one’s mortgage, but this should not be done habitually.

The third point is pre-emptive: reduce spending or work more to ensure there is enough money to avoid consumer debt and save for the future. This may be easier said than done, and every situation is different, but may be necessary to keep debt from escalating.

Final thoughts Generally, a household’s income is enough to provide for the basic necessities of life, plus some for saving and discretionary spending. It’s not magic; the developed world is set up this way. The balance lies in figuring out what is reasonable and what is excessive.

Investment opportunity costs may be pricey, but the alternative is worse. With a few exceptions, debt generally costs more than guaranteed investments like GICs will return, so always pay off high-interest debt first.

NOTICE TO ELECTORS OF AN ALTERNATIVE APPROVAL PROCESS This notice is the first of two notices to advise electors in the District of Invermere of the intention to adopt “Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 1557, 2019”. The purpose of the bylaw is to borrow an amount not to exceed $5,000,000 to finance the purchase of the Lake Windermere Resort lands that will be repaid over a period not to exceed 25 years. It is estimated that the borrowing will result in a tax increase for the average residential property of $103.84 per year. A copy of Bylaw 1557, 2019 and background information are available from the local government’s offices during each business day of the week between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The Council proposes to borrow the money and undertake the land purchase unless, by 4:30 p.m. (local time) on April 15th, 2019, at least 10 percent of the electors in the municipality sign an elector response form opposing the implementation of the proposal.

The number of elector responses required to prevent the local government from proceeding unless a vote is held is estimated to be 239. A report respecting the basis on which this determination was made and is available upon request from the local government.

Elector responses are required to be submitted to the local government on forms that can be obtained during regular business hours from the District of Invermere offices. The form can also be downloaded from the District of Invermere’s website at: www.invermere.net. The only elector response forms that will be accepted by the local government are the ones provided by the District of Invermere, or an accurate copy of the form.

Only electors of the District of Invermere are eligible to sign the elector response forms. There are two types of electors – resident electors and non-resident property electors.

Resident Elector: When signing an elector response form during an AAP, a resident elector must: be 18 years of age or older; be a Canadian citizen; have lived in British Columbia for at least six months; have lived in the jurisdiction for at least 30 days; live in the area defined for the AAP; and, not be disqualified under the Local Government Act, or any other enactment from voting in a local election, or be otherwise disqualified by law.

Non-resident Property Elector: When signing an elector response form during an AAP, a non-resident property elector must: be at least 18 years of age; be a Canadian citizen; have lived in British Columbia for at least six months; have owned property in the jurisdiction for at least 30 days; own property in the area defined for the AAP; and, not be disqualified under the Local Government Act, or any other enactment from voting in a local election, or be otherwise disqualified by law.

Note: Only one non-resident property elector may sign an elector response form per property, regardless of how many people own the property; and, that owner must have the written consent of a majority of the other property owner(s) to sign the response form on their behalf.

Property owned in whole or in part by a corporation does not qualify under the non-resident property elector provisions.

Resident electors signing the elector response form must provide their name and address.

Non-resident property electors must provide their name and the address of the property in relation to which they are entitled to register as a non-resident property elector. The local government will not share the information on the form with anyone other than the Corporate Officer, or other person designated by the Corporate Officer. All forms being submitted must show proof of residency in the form of a drivers licence, a health service card, or a BC ID. Music of the mountains

Friday’s shows will include a musical feast by Ken Lavigne served with dinner and wine at Restaurant elevenFIFTY, followed by performances from The Frontiers and Derina Harvey Band.

On Saturday evening, guests at the Great Hall will hear from Tiger Moon, Diyet & The Love Soldiers and The Jerry Cans.

Diyet & The Love Soldiers Diyet, of Diyet & The Love Soldiers, was born in a tent and grew up in the wild expanse of the Yukon, where children are “really treasured and prized.” She was raised not only by her family but by the collective in the indigenous Kluane community.

“You don’t really ever feel lonely,” Diyet said, but in her teens she couldn’t wait to leave the land of her childhood in search of freedom and adventure.

She spent many years in Vancouver and lived in the Netherlands, but was nostalgic for the mountains of her youth.

“The freedom I actually craved was the freedom I had as a child,” she said. “It’s a real pull to come back to my community and to be involved in that lifestyle. The life and the tradition and the culture is so strong. It’s not something that is forgotten, and when you don’t have it you long for it.”

She moved back home to the country’s tallest mountain range and settled on the shores of a glacial lake, where she is immersing her two children in their culture and where she said daily life revolves “around landscape and land.”

It’s no surprise then that nature plays heavily into the music Diyet & The Love Soldiers perform. The theme is so pervasive that one fan told her their show “has many peaks and valleys.”

“You have to be really cautious out there. And there’s stories of people who have fallen through the ice, and especially when they take dog teams out because the dogs are ahead so they can’t really see what’s underneath them,” she said. “No matter how humans try to control everything, we have no control over Mother Nature, absolutely none. And it’s sort of the one thing in our human existence that, try as we might, we can’t defeat that or overcome that or control how it’s going to unfold.”

While their show reflects the Kluane region, she said she expects the music to resonate strongly with their audience at Panorama Mountain Resort as locals will also be intimately familiar with mountain settings and the joys and perils rugged nature has to offer.

“They will understand what it’s like to be sort of in the middle of nowhere and sort of be surrounded by these peaks, be surrounded by snow or, in the summer, be wrapped up in the sort of green velvet that covers everything,” she said, adding that she hopes to “perhaps maybe inspire (Valley residents) to fall in love with where they live again.”

Diyet is eagerly anticipating her first visit to Panorama, going skiing and seeing the other performers at High Notes Music Festival.

“It’s wonderful to get to connect with fellow musicians,” she said.

She toured with Ken Lavigne previously, and called him “quite the showman.”

About her friends in The Gerry Cans, who are also from the North, she said: “Every once in a while you just connect with these bright lights.”

S OBITUARY S Gibb, Margie 1945 - 2019

Margie Gibb passed away peacefully at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook on Monday, February 25, 2019. She was 73.

Margie was born Margaret Esther Greenlaw on March 22nd, 1945 in Kaslo, BC. She lived most of her life in the Windermere Valley working as an elementary teacher in Invermere, Windermere and Canal Flats over her 26 year career. She was highly regarded by both colleagues and students. She loved life, enjoying many activities gardening, skiing, windsurfing to name a few and was an avid reader. Her most passionate pastimes were golf and painting. Family and friends were very important to Margie and she was quick to let others know how special they were.

Margie is survived by her husband of 50 years Jim; children Malcolm (Katharine) and Myrna (Jeff); grandchildren Mackenzie and Eleanor; brothers Jack and Larry (Coriene); nephews Ron (Marlene), Kip (Theresa) and Ken (Kristen) and nieces Dolores and Kristine (Shawn). Margie was predeceased by her father Malcolm, stepfather John and mother Florence “Mae”.

A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Christ Church Trinity in Invermere at 3 pm.

S OBITUARY S Steel, Edward February 17, 1939 February 27 -2019

Ed Steel was born in Irricana, Alberta to Matt and Madge Steel and passed away peacefully in Invermere, BC. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Elaine Ramsay.

Ed was survived by his wife, Suzanne of 58 years, and his sons Kenny (Susan), Brian (Carmela) and daughter Shelley (Steve). Ed was very proud of his family and his 8 grandchildren.

Surveying brought Ed to the Windermere Valley in 1958 where he met his future wife Suzanne. They were married 2 years later and enjoyed raising their family in Invermere.

Ed enjoyed every season in Invermere. Gardening in the spring, fishing, camping, baseball and golf in the summer, hunting in the fall and curling in the winter. Ed owned and operated 3 pubs, The Coronation Hotel, The Lakeside Inn (one of the first “trial” pubs allowed in BC) and finally The Station Pub. He loved providing a place everyone could gather to share good times.

Ed was a proud member of the community for almost 60 years, creating many life long friends along the way. Over the years he enjoyed coaching little league and curling. He sponsored many sports teams and events, proceeds of which went back to the community. In his later years he enjoyed donating his garden to the local elementary school students.

The family would like thank the care givers in Invermere and Cranbrook. We are especially grateful for the wonderful care he received at Ivy House.

There will be a Celebration of Ed’s Life at The Station Pub on Friday, March 29th (2-4). Please join the family and share some “Ed” stories.

Invermere skier takes home three golds from Special Olympics BC Submitted by Special Olympics Invermere

IT’S YOUR CALL Let’s talk about protecting nature and reducing pollution

On behalf of Special Olympics Invermere, we would like to send a huge Congratulations to Marlow Feldmann on her amazing performance at the 2019 Special Olympics BC (SOBC) Winter Games. This year’s event was held in Vernon, B.C. from February 21-23rd. It attracted over 600 athletes from across the province, making this the largest SOBC provincial games to date!

Ms. Feldmann competed in Alpine Skiing. She raced in the ladies Novice division, where she took home three gold medals: 1st place in Giant Slalom, Super G, and Slalom. This was Ms. Feldmann’s third time competing in the BC Winter games and she certainly doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Although Ms. Feldmann did well on the slopes, she said her favourite part of the games was dancing and being with her friends. She would also like to thank all the local businesses and members of the community that supported her on her journey to Provincials.

Ms. Feldmann has been skiing with Special Olympics Invermere for over 15 years now, training on Sunday afternoons at Panorama Mountain Resort with her fellow athletes and volunteers. If you know Ms. Feldmann, you already know that she is one of the friendliest people you will meet, even making it quite difficult to ski at times because she loves to introduce herself and socialize with everyone on the mountain!

We are so proud of Ms. Feldmann for representing our community with such great pride! If you see her on

Today, God is First

By Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian Fellowship Church As I sat back and reflected this week and thought about what the Lord would have me to share, what kept coming back to my mind was how incredibly faithful God has been to me. Even when I blow it, even when I make mistakes, He is always there for me. He has proven Himself over and over.

Sometimes the drama of life, the business of life, has a tendency to cloud our vision as to everything God truly has done for us, is doing for us, and is going to do for us.

It is a very busy life, and the closer I come to “retirement” the busier it seems to get.

One of the great truths found in God’s Word is in Psalms 91 verses 1-2. All Psalms 91 is great but the first two verses, if we live by them, can take away a lot of the pressure of life, a lot of the stress of life.

“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High / Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.”

I know that I have to change, I know that I have to put more trust in God, and less trust in what I can do.

And when I reach that point I will be able to truly say as David said: “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God,

in Him I will trust.”

And when we learn to trust God, as we learn to love God, as we learn to accept God for who He is, He will say to us, as He said to David in the last three verses of Psalms 91, 14-16: “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name. He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation.”

These verses would baffle even the most intellectual mind if they didn’t know Christ. But for those of us who do know Him, those of us who have a day to day relationship with Him, we’ve come to understand it as, His unmerited favour and grace that He extends towards us.

Even though we’ve done nothing to deserve it, He makes it continually available to us! Even before we ever loved Him, He loved us, and has been gently guiding us towards that wonderful life He has already prepared for us!

I want to put my total trust in the Lord, I want to rest in the shadow of the Almighty. How about you?

Psalm 73:25-26: “Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You. My flesh and my heart fail; But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

The Peewee A team hosted their Banner tournament last weekend, competing against Fernie and Elk Valley. They won both round robin games setting up a final against Elk Valley with whom they have had close games with all year. In the Championship final, Elk Valley went ahead 2-0 early but the locals were able to claw back to a 3-3 tie after one period. The second period was back and forth again with the Rockies holding a 6-5 lead after two periods. Elk Valley came out strong in the third period taking the lead back with back to back goals. Brayden Roe tied it up with his second goal of the game and soon after Tyler Collis gave the Rockies the lead completing a hat trick. Elk Valley wasn’t finished though and capitalized on the power play tying the game with 1:35 remaining.

With overtime 19 seconds away, Caden Williams pounced on a loose puck and scored with a bardown for his second goal of the game sealing the championships for the Rockies, winning in a 9-8 game. A special congratulations to the Peewee A team on a hard earned victory. A big thanks to all the parents, coaches, and other volunteers for their support of this team. A good way to end the season.

The Bantam team travelled to Kimberly for their Banner Tournament. They lost their first game to the Tier 3 Cranbrook

team 5-1 with Zack Smith scoring the lone goal, and then met Fernie in the second game. They won the second game with Brayden Mastroianni and Paddy Donahue both scoring shorthanded goals to take the lead. Then Carson Jefferson scored on a tip in from Paddy, and Luke Schaal scored the winning goal. With the Fernie goalie on the bench, Ryan Neal scored into the empty net ensuring the win. The next game was a thriller against Creston, and the locals lost 3-2, with Zach Smith and Luke Schaal scoring the goals. Cranbrook went on to win the Banner. The Bantams next travel to Prince Rupert to compete for the Provincial Championship at the Tier 4 level.

The Novice team easily won the Cranbrook tournament this past weekend.

The Senior girls entered the second round of their playoffs up against the Prairie Thunder from Brooks, Alberta. Friday night and Sunday afternoon saw the Sr. female Rockies finish their season after losing both games 7-3 and 7-5. This team has come a long way from their first tiering game back in November against Olds.

All the coaching staff and volunteers want to say that it has been a great season all around. There are many stories to tell about resilience of a majority Bantam age team of players, playing in a Midget league based in Alberta, most of whom have played together for only this year. Great season ladies…. thanks for the memories!
