MLA working on health care access

Doug Clovechok, MLA for Columbia River-Revelstoke, is committed to helping British Columbians have equal access to health care, no matter how complex the issue is.

Mr. Clovechok jokes with the Pioneer that he knows more about the health care system now than he ever has in his life after spending the last 18 months studying the issue, talking to people involved in the system, and hearing story after story from constituents facing a variety of health-related challenges in the Columbia Valley and across the riding.

He and fellow MLA Tom Shypitka, as well as some other border-region MLAs in B.C., have banded together in light of what appears to be a growing barrier between British Columbians and access to health care in Alberta.

“Tom and I picked up the sword on this and are working hard on it,” Mr. Clovechok told the Pioneer.

Dr. Maria Dibb, an Invermere doctor, sent a letter to the editor last week (Pioneer, February 14th) discussing this very problem. In Dr. Dibb’s letter, she writes that she has been blocked from sending patients to Alberta, requiring alternate locations for care such as Kelowna. That shift may create other challenges for patients including transportation and lack of support systems nearby.

“Historically, patients have been treated across this border, regardless of their provincial health care card. I know as I have been doing this job for 30 years. In the last few years the wall has slowly emerged. We are advised we must try to transfer our patients to a centre in B.C. that can provide whatever medical service is needed,” cites Dr. Dibbs in the letter. “We are exhausted trying to manage transfers against such adversity.”

Mr. Clovechok says they have heard reports that all the border communities are being affected by this challenge. There is a rumour that B.C. is being shut out because we are not paying Alberta Health Services (AHS) bills in a timely fashion. However, Mr. Clovechok has had several conversations with the executive vice president for AHS, and she has assured him that rumour is just not true. The vice president also told Mr. Clovechok that around 200 beds per day in Alberta are being used by out-of-province patients.

The good news right now is that in ‘Code Red’ high emergency patients, there are no issues with cross-border transfers, confirms Mr. Clovechok. In other words, if your life is at immediate risk, you can still be sent to a hospital in Calgary.

“If you are a patient with a cardiac event, and you are ‘Code Red’ – you’re going to the nearest hospital, which is likely by STARS (Air Ambulance) to Calgary,” Mr. Clovechok says.

There are still issues there, however, writes Dr. Dibbs in her letter. She says the Alberta criteria for’Code Red’ is so high, patients are being downgraded and forced to wait longer to get desperately needed care. She cites the example of a patient downgraded from critical when she had a heart attack. While waiting for a transfer to Kelowna, she had a cardiac arrest.

“Thank God the staff at our little rural hospital were able to resuscitate her,” Dr. Dibbs writes in the letter.

It is those ‘Code Yellows’, the next level down, where things get a little “dicy,” Mr. Clovechok explains.

“We’ve got great hospitals,” physicians, and specialists, across the riding, Mr. Clovechok says. But accessing the health care needed in a quick and timely fashion is certainly a problem, especially as Alberta rejects B.C. patient after B.C. patient into their system.

Aside from the Alberta wall rising, Mr. Clovechok has had many other health-related files comes across his desk that he is working to help solve.

He and Mr. Shypitka had a meeting with the minister of health to talk about some of the rural health issues they have heard and suggested changes, including possible increased compensation or a tax relief for people who need to travel to access health care. Mr. Clovechok has seen the increasing pressure on the catchment area, and would like to see more capacity at our regional hospitals. He is also advocating for increased telemedicine options. One of the biggest complaints he has heard from people is that they are sent to a doctor in Kelowna, who requires them to drive all that way just for a 15-minute consultation.

That is absolutely insane,” Mr. Clovechok comments.

On a local front, Mr. Clovechok is addressing transportation to our regional health centre of Cranbrook. BC Transit currently offers a bus from Golden to Cranbrook and back on Mondays and Fridays. The Health Connections route is run in partnership with the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District, Regional District of East Kootenay, and BC Transit. Mr. Clovechok is working to see if he can get that bus increased to three days a week. Mr. Clovechok has another meeting with the minister of health coming up, where he intends to lay out all they have learned since their last meeting in November 2018 to hopefully affect change in the region.

“We’re throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks,” he quips of the ways they are trying to help solve local health care issues.

A proliferation of Columbia Valley pot shops

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com The Regional District of East Kootenay voted in favour of allowing Ryan Haynes to open his proposed retail cannabis shop at 4884 Athalmer Road near the Invermere Liquor Store, which he also operates.

“Because we’d had the public hearing and there were no letters objecting, there wasn’t a lot of discussion,” Area F Director Susan Clovechok said. “All feedback suggested that the community was in support.”

Before recreational cannabis was legalized in October, Ms. Clovechok pre-

dicted a noticeable increase in “that skunk smell” but has since been pleasantly surprised by humanity.

“I think people are being are being really respectful of kind of the where and when to consume,” she said.

Following the RDEK approval, Mr. Haynes’ shop needs to secure a final nod from the provincial Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch before he can get his proposed joint rolling.

Less than three kilometres from Mr. Haynes’ intended location, Blooming World Cannabis is preparing to open its doors soon.

• On Monday, February 11th police responded to a single vehicle rollover on Highway 95 just north of Radium Hot Springs. The driver of a Toyota Yaris lost control of her vehicle and rolled down an embankment. The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was transported to the hospital by ambulance paramedics with minor injuries.

• On Thursday, February 14th at 7:30 p.m., police responded to a disturbance at a residence on Subdivision Road in Windermere. Police spoke to a male and female

on scene and learned a verbal argument had escalated into a physical altercation. An adult female was arrested for assault and released on conditions to appear in court at a later date.

• On Saturday, February 16th at 8:30 a.m., an officer was conducting patrols on Highway 93/95 near Invermere when she came upon a single-vehicle motor vehicle incident. The driver of a silver Ford F150 lost control of her vehicle in a corner and went down an embankment. The driver was uninjured.

• On Sunday, February 17th shortly after midnight, police were called to a disturbance at a rental suite on Forsters Landing Road in Radium Hot Springs. When police arrived they were told an intoxicated male, who was part of a larger group that rented the property, was causing problems and damaging property so they locked him out of the room. Police located the male in the vicinity and arrested him for mischief. The man was released

Columbia Valley RCMP searching for missing person from Invermere

By Trevor Crawley Cranbrook Townsman Police in the Columbia Valley are asking for public help in finding Elizabeth Stewart, who has not been in contact with family and friends since mid-January.

Ms. Stewart was formally reported missing Monday, February 11th, but it is not uncommon for her to be out of contact with friends and family for extended periods of time, according to RCMP. However, there has been no activity on her banking or social media accounts, and her vehicle has not moved for several weeks, which concerns those close to her, added police.

Ms. Stewart parked her vehicle at a residence in Invermere on Monday, January 14th, and was captured on a video camera walking away from it. There have been no known sightings of her since then.

Ms. Stewart is described as: • Caucasian woman • 76-years-old • 5 feet, seven inches tall • 160 pounds • Blonde hair • Green eyes She was last seen wearing a two-tone grey jacket and black pants.

RCMP have followed up on a number of investigative avenues, however, Ms. Stewart remains missing.

Invermere’s borderless doctor returns from Iraq

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com During her time working at a hospital in Iraq, Dr. Stefanie Falz passed the remains of a different hospital – a fancy new one that hadn’t even opened its doors or served its first patient before being bombed to rubble.

“It was heartbreaking to see that,” she said. “A brandnew hospital in ruins.”

Also devastatingly incomprehensible was the site she passed where mass graves had been uncovered.

“When you first arrive, all you see is the damage,” she said, comparing the destruction she witnessed to the stark remnants left behind at the end of the Second World War. In October the Invermere-based physician went on a three-month mission with Doctors Without Borders/

Médecins Sans Frontières to support the newly-reopened Sinuni General Hospital in a rural Iraqi community near the Syrian border. The hospital had been closed during the ISIS conflict that left terrified civilians fleeing into the mountains where they pitched their tents and where many still live.

Instead of a no-smoking sign, Sinuni General Hospital has a no-guns sign affixed to the gate. Even soldiers have to leave their guns outside to be allowed access, she said.

Dr. Falz spent three months running the seven-bed emergency room, which saw around 30 patients a day, and training young local doctors.

“Their education seemed theory-heavy,” she said. “I had to teach them how to suture, drain an abscess, put on a cast.”

By BC Conservation Officer Sgt. Drew Milne A non-resident from the United States on a guided hunt learned the hard way about the wildlife laws in British Columbia. Acting on a public tip that a mountain goat had been harvested on September 24th, 2017 and no meat had been taken from this animal, the Invermere Conservation Officer Service responded and subsequently inspected a Guide-Outfitter Camp late morning of September 25th. Conservation Officers discovered the guide outfitter working on a goat hide and preparing it for taxidermy. The guide and hunter were congratulated on their successful hunt and asked to see the meat for inspection purposes. The response given by the pair was that all the meat was left on the mountain as the hunter could not pack any weight down due previous injury, adding the guide’s pack was full after securing only the ‘trophy’ parts. And of course the pair stated that they had full intention of hiking back

up the mountain to get the meat after the CO’s visit with them. Further investigation revealed that the goat meat had been left on the ground, on an open slope and no effort was made by these individuals to preserve it.

It is a legal requirement for all hunters in B.C. “to make every reasonable effort to remove the edible portions of the carcass of game to the person’s dwelling place or to a meat cutter.” This includes the meat of the four quarters, loins, neck and ribs. In this case the goat meat was deemed no longer edible as it was not properly cooled to prevent spoiling from bacteria or protected from being scavenged. A harvested animal’s meat must be a hunter’s first priority to recover and all other parts collected once the meat has been taken care of.

The US resident hunter had his mountain goat trophy head and hide seized from him in which he paid several thousand dollars for this hunting privilege. Both hunters were issued fines under the Wildlife Act for “fail to remove the edible portions of wildlife.”

Health care across the border

Health care is always a hot topic. Anytime someone in the community faces a health care challenge, it’s fodder for discussion. Lately, that discussion has been centred on our eastern border as more and more Valley residents are finding a disconnect between Canada’s Health Act and the reality of accessing services.

There are countless benefits to living in the Columbia Valley. We have stunning views every which way we turn; minimal traffic; the feeling of wellness when we run into people we know; the strong sense of community; the plethora of planned activities and those created by Mother Nature. We also have an incredible team of health care professionals in the Valley providing the very best in patient care, a small-town hospital that is second-to-none, and accesss to many medical services and supports.

But. There are tradeoffs to living here.

One such tradeoff is we cannot simply walk out of our homes and into the offices of many specialists.

Nor can our hospital handle the full spectrum of emergencies that swing through the emergency room doors.

That means Valley residents are often forced to travel elsewhere for care. It is a tradeoff most people willingly accept in exchange for the benefits of Valley life.

While we forego access up the street to the gamut of health care services we may need, most people anticipate a relatively short drive to Calgary if the need arises.

The issue now appears to be that Alberta has shut down its borders to Valley residents in need of non-emergency medical services. Patients are often diverted to Kelowna, a challenging six hour drive.

The Canada Health Act states, “It is hereby declared that the primary objective of Canadian health care policy is to protect, promote and restore the physical and mental well-being of residents of Canada and to facilitate reasonable access to health services without financial or other barriers.”

If the Canada Health Act ensures all Canadians are to be provided health care without barriers, this inter-provincial battle appears to be in contravention to the Act. Likely there is far more to this story than you or I will ever know, but one thing is for certain. This hot topic will not be moving off the burner until someone can definitively answer why Canadians from one province are being sent to far, far less convenient locations because of an arbitrary line on a map depicting provincial boundaries.

Lake of the Hanging Glacier

Dear Editor:

THE DEFINITION OF AWESOME...is TheLake-of-the-Hanging-Glacier (LHG), jewel of the Purcells. My interest in the LHG began long ago.

Most recently it was a magazine colour photo showing the Jumbo Glacier calving into that gorgeous body of water. An easy partial day hike, the trailhead is at the beginning of the Horsethief Creek drainage.

The trail and the lake’s spillway share a wide open slope. Geographically it is immediately to the north of the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort Municipality that would be the size of Nelson. We know the resort proponents, Oberto and Tomasio Oberti, have big plans for teahouses and all-season trails with lift lines on the adjacent lands - all intended to be an amusement park for the wealthy. This father and son development team, urban dwellers, care nothing about those who live there in the wild Jumbo environs and call those wild environs home. In addition to the massive forest busy sequestering carbon dioxide, there is a large variety of four-leggeds and those who fly and swim, among which are several provincial and federal species of special concern, including a number of grizzly bears. None of the above want to share their habitat with two-leggeds. Recently my government contact person in the Resorts Development Branch told me the Environmental Assessment Office has not received a new resort proposal from the proponents.

And the judicial review that the Obertos requested, ruled in their favour saying they had jumped through all the required hoops. But they didn’t as they did not make the required substantial start. That was last June 2018. Now the province has an appeal specific

Health act violated Dear Editor: Thanks to Dr. Maria Dibb for raising this very serious issue (‘Patient Wall’ February 14th). Critically ill patients from our community are being denied access to the nearest Canadian care services in Alberta because of a political game being played out between the two NDP premiers of Alberta and B.C. over oil and gas.

This should be enough to make the late Tommy Douglas, the father of Canadian Medicare and the founder of the NDP, roll over in his grave. His crusade to introduce Medicare in this country was all about reasonable access to medical care for all Canadian citizens.

The Canada Health Act sets out the

primary objective of Canadian health care policy, which is “to protect, promote and restore the physical and mental well-being of residents of Canada and to facilitate reasonable access to health services without financial or other barriers.”

What Dr. Dibb has described violates the intent of the Canada Health Act. Using our most vulnerable patients as political pawns in this dispute is probably illegal, definitely despicable and clearly violates the NDP’s own Statement of Principles (1983) preamble statement “We seek a compassionate and caring society, servicing the needs of all.”

Questions to ask on Athalmer purchase Dear Editor: In regards to the proposed purchase of the Athalmer waterfront property: Let’s not justify this land purchase just because we made mistakes in the past by not doing so with other available properties.

More importantly, let’s really look at what we are purchasing. It is partial river frontage, not lake frontage. Is the former Lakeside Inn property included? Is it for sale and at what price?

How will we repay the loan to purchase the property? What is the cost of the loan? What is the business case? What portions might be kept for park and what portions for development? What kind of development?

How will these decisions be made?

Will development repay the loan?

If the current developer did not

think they had good reasons to move forward with development, then why do we think we know better?

Is $5,000,000 the right amount of money to be spending on this property? What will the cost be to us for development after the purchase is made?

Is this the greatest priority for public expenditure in Invermere right now?

Or is there something more important like the former community hall site?

Is there an option to perhaps taking over James Chabot Park from the province for a lot less money?

At the end of the day it will be the majority who will decide and we will all live with this decision. I’m just saying let’s do it with eyes wide open and be fully informed before casting our votes.

There was no way to send the girl to a better-equipped hospital to determine what was wrong since the road was impassible, but the doctors made a breakthrough when the teen’s husband reported that he had been feeling sick too. From there, they learned that the couple had been running a generator in their tent on the mountain. That information, combined with the couple’s symptoms, gave the medical team reason to suspect carbon-monoxide poising.

“Trying to sort that out without having all the tools was pretty tricky,” Dr. Falz said.

Communication was another challenge to address.

Dr. Falz learned enough Kurdish to say: ‘Where does it hurt?’ and ‘Take a deep breath.’ Fortunately the local doctors spoke English and would translate for their patients.

“There would be the odd gunshot wound,” she said,

but the majority of her patients had long-term chronic conditions that had gone untreated since strife in the area escalated in 2014.

“There was one stretch where we had a heart attack pretty much every day,” she said.

Dr. Falz, who is originally from Germany, has lived in the Valley for a year and plans to make Invermere her permanent home. She started a position with Chisel Peak Medical Clinic in February and intends to continue helping with Doctors Without Borders as she is able.

“It gives you perspective,” she said. “People are so resilient... People just move on. They laugh and they live life.”

Her resumé also includes work in a Cranbrook emergency room as well as stints in the Arctic, in rural B.C. and on another Doctors Without Borders project in a refugee camp in south Sudan, where the children were “literally starving to death.”

Doctors Without Borders is entirely funded by small donors, she said. Not accepting government funding means they are not beholden to political agendas and can focus on healing the world’s most urgent wounds as they arise.

“We go in during or after a crisis,” she said, adding that Doctors Without Borders’ objectives are to re-establish healthcare, train staff and “get everything up and running” before transitioning the medical roles back to the local community.

Fat bike fun at Nipika

By Katie Watt intern@columbiavalleypioneer.com Not all fats are unhealthy, especially when they come in the form of a bike. On Saturday, February 23rd, you can get your daily dose of fat biking at the Cross River Ripper Race held by Nipika Mountain Resort.

This event will include fat bike races for youth, adults, and seniors alike; for youth there is a $20 registration fee, and for adults and seniors it is $30. Participants will be able to race certain distances depending on their age category. Distance categories include 5, 10, and 20 kilometres, but no matter where you ride you’ll be racing past mountains and rivers.

“The terrain isn’t flat, but the trail is amazingly groomed,” says Steve

O’Shaughnessy who will be attending the Cross river Ripper for the second year in a row. “It’s definitely hard, but it’s as tough as you want to make it.”

After the race you can leave the bike behind and get some real fat at the family barbecue and awards ceremony. Barbecue tickets are included with race registration, but additional tickets can be purchased onsite.

This is the second year in a row Nipika has held this event. Last year, the event had 51 participants.

“It’s a super positive vibe that they have up there,” says Mr. O’Shaughnessy.

“There’s just a big mix of kids and family.”

Trauma and recovery cracked Wide Open in memoir

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Wide Open is a memoir that tackles one woman’s journey through sexual assault and recovery from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Local author and Pioneer reporter D.M. Ditson shared a little about her journey, her book, and what she hopes to achieve through the telling of her story. Wide Open is a raw and emotional account of how she became vulnerable to assault, the depths to which she fell, and of her excruciating recovery from post-traumatic stress disorder.

During her darkest days, Ms. Ditson searched for stories of people who had gone through something similar and made it out the other side. She found memoirs of survivors who wrote about what happened, but not how they found normalcy and healing in their life again.

“I wanted to see somebody else’s map of how they got better so I could know that I could get better too.

And that’s what I ended up writing,” she says.

The story chronicles her journey to recovery. Once Ms. Ditson started to work on getting better, she felt she had no choice but to push through.

“I was in dreadful, dreadful shape,” she recalls. When she began to focus on healing her mental state, her body reacted in strange and disruptive ways, such as uncontrollable shaking legs every single day for more than three years.

“There were some nights where it lasted forever, where I don’t even know if I even slept at all,” she recalls.

Ms. Ditson ended up quitting her job and spent 14 months doing nothing but focusing on her recovery.

“I remember going to my therapist and asking, ‘why aren’t I better yet? Why is this taking so long? Why is all this weird stuff happening to me’?,” Ms. Ditson recounts.

“She told me there’s no timeline on how long it takes. It just takes as long as it takes.”

She found meditation helpful, as well as writing. She wrote the book while she was in the process of healing.

Earlier on, before Ms. Ditson worked out her recovery, she would write about the assaults, then destroy the pages. One time, she tried flushing her diary entries into the toilet. Another time, she burned and buried them in the backyard.

“It was all these secrets I was trying to keep even from myself. And the more I kept them from myself, the more it made me unwell,” she explains.

Part of her healing process was taking these secrets and letting them out. She shared with a few people and found in their response a compassion and empathy she had not expected. That was a pivotal moment for Ms. Ditson as she worked to heal.

“I thought, ‘OK, I’m going to sit down and I’m go-

Ms. Ditson wrote the book to document her own recovery, and to hopefully help others. She wants survivors, loved ones of survivors, and anyone struggling with mental health to read it and see there is hope.

“It’s so difficult to get better. I just wanted to show that ‘yes, you can’,” she explains. “I hope it helps people see each other with more empathy.”

After the sexual assaults, trauma, and lengthy recovery process, Ms. Ditson has come out the other side. She feels whole, healed, and happy now, adding it is important that people know that full recovery is possible.

“People who haven’t gone through this kind of upheaval don’t necessarily live their life specifically by design. And in having exploded my previous life, I got to choose exactly what I wanted in my new one,” she says.

Ms. Ditson shares a story of the moment she realized she was healed, when this chapter of her life could close.

It was a year and a half ago. She was staying in Fernie and desperately wanted to climb a mountain. The first time she tried, she was turned back by a park ranger who said the trail was decommissioned. She tried again, this time urged to turn back by another person who said the trail ahead was too hard. Finally on the third attempt, she got three quarters of the way up before encountering a young man coming down the mountain. He told her it was so treacherous, he turned back just shy of the summit.

But she kept climbing. She had to reach the peak of the mountain this time.

“It was steep, and super hard. By the end I started rock climbing,” she says. But, she finally reached the top.

“It felt then like I was on the other side (of my recovery),” she said. She surveyed the view: stretched out before her was a picture of spring – everything was new and fresh, a totally separate season than the summery mountain behind her. And she knew then. She was healed.

S OBITUARY S Scheffer, Toni (Antonia) January 15, 1932 to February 8, 2019 – 87 years old Our mom passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at the Invermere hospital. She is now reunited with the love of her life, Casey.

She was born in Rotterdam Holland in 1932. When she was just nineteen when she made the journey to Canada to work for a year. This is something we always admired about her, her strength, independence and sense of adventure to travel across the world in 1950, by herself.

Mom was an independent woman with an adventurous soul.

Having lived through the Second World War in Holland, she was brave, smart and ready for anything. Her plans to return to Holland were thwarted by the charisma of a handsome Dutchman while she visited friends in Kimberley on her way back to Halifax to board a ship back to Europe. She didn’t stand a chance with Casey’s charm and he couldn’t ignore mom’s beauty and smile. Mom & dad married in 1953, bought the Kimberley City Bakery in 1960 and raised three sons and a daughter. They spent part of their retired years at Wasa Lake, Cranbrook and then moved to Invermere in 2003 to be closer to their family.

As the matriarch of our family, with a great sense of style, love of life and great hostess skills, their home was always open to all.

When she entered a room, the party started. Their strong faith and family values were steadfast and unwavering. Mom and dad loved their family more than anything. The six of us created many memories and had many happy years at the Wasa Lake cabin, the place where we could relax and play as a family. And we played a lot. Mom often said she had five kids!

Rockies hit the road and split the weekend tilts

Submited by Columbia Valley Rockies The Rockies opened at Castlegar on Friday, February 15th against the Rebels.

They were determined to come out fast and did just that.

Erik Lloyd opened the scoring early on with help from Jesse Carr and Cooper Kraus. Less than two minutes later Dace Prymak on the power play – with help from Kale Hawryluk and Gavin Fleck – had the Rockies up by two, silencing the crowd in Castlegar.

The Rockies jumped up one more as Dylan Fontaine – from Jesse Carr and Dace Prymak – had the Rockies advantaged by three. However the Rebels managed to score, and the period ended 3 to 1 in favour of the Rockies.

The second period was all Rockies as Kale Hawryluk – from Gavin Fleck and Zachary Giacobbo – opened the period by scoring at 15:06. This was followed less than five minutes later with a hard-working short-handed goal by Fraser McMann on the dish from Chase Hawkins and Kale

The Rebels battled back in the third also scoring two short-handed goals and an even-strength one. The Rockies notched one on the power play by Kyler Shmigelsky with help from Dylan Fontaine. The game ended 6 to 4 in favour of the Rockies as they picked up a huge two points and moved back into third place in the Eddie Mountain Division.

Saturday, February 16th saw the Rockies travelling up the road to Fruitvale to take on the Beaver Valley Nighthawks.

The Rockies never seemed to get things going and found themselves down by three at the end of the second.

In the third the team came out flat and paid the price by trading goals with

Connor Davison scoring with help from Joshua Antunes and Connor Woodworth.

Although the team pulled the goalie it did not help as the home team scored an open net goal. The Rockies went down 5 to 1 on the night’s play.

The Rockies are now in third place by one point and have two huge games coming up this weekend. They will be on the road on Friday, February 22nd in Fernie where they will look to secure third place with a win and then back at home in the Eddie Mountain Arena on Saturday, February 23rd to play against Fernie in their final home game of the season.

“The team needs a huge crowd on Saturday as they get ready for the playoffs,” said coach Wade Dubielewicz. “Come on out and support the team!”

Take the 22% challenge

By Pastor Daren Wride transitional lead pastor Lake Windermere Alliance Church Some of the most generous people I know are Christians. One of my friends, a financial planner who was not at the time a follower of Christ, once commented to me how blown away he was by the generosity of some of the people he worked with who were followers of Jesus Christ.

At the same time, some of the cheapest (and I don’t mean this is the positive sense of “wise frugality”) people I’ve encountered would consider themselves Christians. I knew a guy who when he went out to a restaurant would leave a piece of paper that looked like money sticking out from under a plate. But when picked up by the server it

was revealed to be a little flyer sharing the Good News.

In this case the good news was preceded by the Bad News that you weren’t getting a tip.

Being fairly new to the Columbia Valley, I’m not sure what kind of relationship church goers have with servers at restaurants on Sundays, but I’ve lived in places where Sunday lunch was the most dreaded shift: A mob of demanding people who tip poorly.

So here’s the challenge. It’s for all who claim to follow Jesus, who have received the eternal generosity of their Creator, including total forgiveness and the gift of eternal life: Whether it’s Sunday or Monday or any day, if you go to a restaurant or coffee shop where tips are an option, tip generously. And if the server is having a bad day and not serving you well, tip even more generously.

I’d suggest a minimum of 20%, but it’s actually easier to push 2-2 than 2-0 so let’s just settle on 22%. We claim to follow and serve a most generous Saviour. Let’s represent him well.

Trailer stolen from Rockies lot found The trailer that was stolen from the Columbia Valley Rockies woodlot has been recovered. However, RCMP report the hockey rink boards that were on the trailer are still missing, and the license plate was removed from the trailer. The Rockies club was storing one set of boards for an outdoor hockey rink, valued at approximately $2,000, on the trailer in the Athalmer woodlot. If you have any further information regarding this crime, contact RCMP at 250-342-9292.

The Initiation team held their home tournament on the weekend. There were teams from Banff, Kimberley, Creston and Golden in attendance. There were two games going on all day and all the players had loads of ice time and scored many goals. Scores are not kept, but the local team scored lots of goals and enjoyed the day.

The PeeWee B team travelled to Creston where they lost, but improved on their other Creston games. Goals were scored by Kyle Obranovic, Andrew Dehart, and Cameron Charette. Banner is in three weeks.

The Atom team travelled to Elkford where they played Fernie and Elkford, losing both games. Jake Gramlich scored two goals, and Tobin Donahue scored, with an excellent pass from Jake. Alyssa Shaw then had a perfect pass over to Chayton Martin, who scored. Toby Creek Nordic represents well at Western Canadian championships

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Seven members of the Toby Creek Nordic Club brought the Toby Creek spirit to the Western Canadian Championships recently.

Vanya Sokolowski, communications director for the club, says the team of Toby Creek kids all worked hard at the weekend event, which allowed them to compete against a wide range of nordic skiers from other clubs.

“They have a better idea of where they stand in the province,” following a weekend such as this, explains Ms. Sokolowski.

Friday, February 8th, skiers competed in the 400 metre sprint. Saturday was the classics mass start races, while Sunday was a relay race with teammates mixed into mixed-club relay teams. All the girls contributed to the team’s weekend success, Ms. Sokolowski emphasizes.

“The spirit they have together is pretty awesome.”

Toby Creek’s team brought home five medals from the weekend event.

“We did really well overall,” says Ms. Sokolowski. “Toby Creek is one of the smallest clubs in B.C. But our red jackets are starting to get well-known!”

The Western Canadian Championships were held February 8-10th. More than 500 cross-country skiers, coaches, and supporters from across western Canada and Washington gathered in West Kelowna for the competition.
