An unusual sight could be seen on Lake Windermere recently. Alex Weller tells the Pioneer he was walking on the lake December 31st and discovered these snow rolls, apparently a fairly rare meterological phenomena. To form, there needs to be a thin layer of “sticky” snow that’s close to melting point, and under that there needs to be a layer of powdery snow so the top layer doesn’t stick to it. Finally the wind has to be strong enough to blow the snow into rolls, but not so strong that it blows them apart. These snow rolls were up to 30 cm high, Mr. Weller estimates.

Whiteway Report Recently, we’ve been receiving many questions asking if the Whiteway is open. Unfortunately, the Whiteway is not open. Twelve inches of ice on the lake is the minimum needed for us to be able to plow the track.

We need at least 8 to set tracks for cross country skiing.

Lake Windermere, while thick enough in many places to skate, is not thick enough for us to plow; we need about another 4-6 inches of ice for that to happen.

Lake Lillian is in a similar condition: there is not enough snow or ice for us to set tracks.

There is some good news, however. The Nipika-Toby Creek Nordic Loppet is coming up on Janu-

ary 26 - 27th! This is our annual cross country ski race event. We are looking for both volunteers and participants. If you would prefer to volunteer, there are many positions that need to be filled. What to do(e) with deer urbanites

By Lorene Keitch Lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com Urban deer. Whether you love them or hate them, they are a reality in the Columbia Valley and many other communities across B.C. Towns that consider deer a danger or a nuisance have sought numerous ways to remove the hoofed mammals, including culling and hazing. But researchers are looking at another possibility for municipalities to add to the toolbox: translocation. And so far, the results are showing potential.

Translocation Trial: Translocation means moving deer from an undesirable location (urban areas) to a preferred location (wild mule deer habitat).

It has been nearly three years since a translocation trial began in the East Kootenay.

Citing a desire to find a non-lethal option to reduce urban deer populations, the trial was a cooperative undertaking that included Invermere, Kimberley, Cranbrook, Elkford, the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations, and a team of volunteers, with the project lead taken by biologist Ian Adams through Cranbrook-based VAST Resource Solutions.

In March 2017, an additional 25 deer were translocated from Kimberley and Cranbrook, all to an area 28 kilometres up the Kootenay River Forest Service Road northeast of Canal Flats. Then in March 2018, another 50 were removed from Kimberley.

Mr. Adams says going into the study, there were some big questions that needed answering. One was whether they could

improve on a previous high mortality rate in capturing and moving deer out of communities. Due to a newer drug combination targeted specifically for ungulates, this trial has had great success in relocating the animals during the initial capture and release (only one mortality was recorded during the actual capture and release).

“One of the main successes is we can capture a lot of deer efficiently and safely,” says Mr. Adams.

The other two questions were what happened to the translocated deer after they

were moved, and how their movements compare to non-urban deer populations.

That answer has proved more challenging to summarize due to highly individualized results from the trial.

Forty-seven of the 85 deer translocated in 2016 and 2017 were fitted with radio collars, providing researchers a stream of data on the animals’ movements. Ninety-five non-urban deer were also collared for comparison, fitted between December 2014 and April 2017.

Of the radio-collared urban deer, 40 survived more than 60 days. The trial report states 12 of 40 collared deer (30%) moved to and stayed in a community; seven of those 12 generated formal complaints. Fifteen deer were never located in a community or rural area. Six deer resided primarily around rural properties, but deer in rural areas generated only one complaint.

If you notice a radio-collared deer in Invermere, that is because there are actually a couple that come in and out of Invermere that were part of the translocation trial.

Bloom or bust: Public to weigh in on proposed pot shop

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Upcoming public hearing Olivier Hogue and Shawn Wernig have been waiting since September to find out if they will get to open their proposed retail cannabis store, Blooming World Cannabis. With a series of governmental approvals in place, the Invermere-based entrepreneurs are now hoping to build support from residents as the public hearing that will largely determine the fate of their shop draws near.

The public hearing – which will take place at the District of Invermere’s council chambers at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15th – is an opportunity for residents to share their support or voice their opposition for the proposed business as council takes note.

“People supporting it will just support it in their heads,” Mr. Hogue said. “We

encourage anyone for it to come out and support.”

Following the hearing, council will weigh the comments and decide whether to recommend that the provincial Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch approve the application. If council is not in favour, the process comes to an end. If council approves, the province will have one last look before making its final ruling.

As the public hearing approaches, Blooming World Cannabis is holding a series of open houses to share their hopes and to listen to any concerns residents may have.

“We’re taking every step we can to inform people and make it fair for everyone,” Mr. Hogue said.

At an open house on Thursday, January 3rd, one attendee said: “This is kind of exciting... It’s nice to see other businesses try new things and bring innovation to Invermere.”

The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to.

• On Monday, December 31st at 12 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report that a male was lying down on the front step of a vacant house on Upper Lakeview Road in Invermere. Officers attended and located an intoxicated male who said he was just resting in the sunshine. The male was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and provided a warm cell for the evening.

• On Tuesday, January 1st at 2:40 a.m., a 21-yearold male was involved in an altercation with three men after being kicked out of the Ullr Bar in Invermere. The 21-year-old-male was taken to the hospital to be assessed.

Those who have made the trek from the Athalmer bridge up to the Crossroads after dark know to pack a flashlight. But if the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) succeeds with its Columbia Basin Trust grant application, two new solar lights will be installed off Athalmer Road to brighten the walk.

Kevin Paterson, RDEK’s environmental services manager, said: “It’s dark and it’s difficult to see... on the darkest stretches adjacent to the road.”

He said the lights would be added on the steepest sections along Athalmer Road. The solar lights would cost $8,000 to shine some light on the pathway for anyone inclined to hike the trail at night.

Officers located the male inside the residence which was a breach of his conditions. The male was arrested for breaching his conditions and was held for court.

• On Thursday, January 3rd at 1:30 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report that a male, wearing an orange and blue striped toque, gloves, a black jacket and jeans, was trying vehicle doors in the 800 block of 10th Avenue in Invermere. Officers patrolled the area but were not able to locate the male.

• On Sunday, January 6th, police were advised someone had thrown a rock through the window of the Red Apple store in Invermere sometime during the night.

An officer examined the scene and determined there was no entry into the business. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP.

“Using the trail can get pretty sketchy,” because it’s steep and can be slippery in the winter, he said. He hopes to add solar lights to make the path safer and to “help people enjoy the trail more.”

According to RDEK’s application, the trail is popular year round and is used so shoppers can access the stores, restaurants and businesses located along the path. The RDEK is asking the Trust to provide $6,000 for the project and is prepared to provide $2,000 in assistance.

If the funding is approved, RDEK anticipates having the lights shining by the end of August.

Getting the urban out of the deer

Urban wildlife is a touchy subject, and one in which most people seem to have an opinion. City-loving deer in Invermere have raised the ire of more than one letter writer over the years, with complaints of menacing behaviour, chomping of flower beds, trampling of gardens and the like. On the flipside, many remark how much they enjoy to see the deer meander through town, serenely and slowly searching for sustenance.

The Pioneer interviewed Holger Bohm, fish and wildlife section head for the Kootenay Boundary region, as part of our look into an ongoing translocation trial for urban deer (see story page 3). Mr. Bohm called the East Kootenays “pioneers” in the study of translocation. Given the urban deer issues across B.C., we asked Mr. Bohm how our region came to be the first to do a comprehensive study of the subject. He speculated in part it could be because we do have higher numbers of urban deer than in many other parts of B.C. But also, he said, “We mostly have been the target of the criticism around culling.”

Indeed. When Invermere conducted a referendum in 2013, in which 729 voted in favour of a cull and 259 opposed, it made national headlines. The spotlight shone on Invermere once again when the then-mayor and head of a deer protection group faced each other in court over accusations stemming from urban deer activities.

Regardless of whether you see urban ungulates as an issue or not, it is fascinating to look at the investigation of the deer dilemna underway right now. The highly individualized results from the ongoing translocation study must make it a nightmare for scientists to draw conclusions, but it makes for a curious read. For example, most Invermere translocated deer fared quite well ‘out in the wilds’, while Kimberley’s deer seemed to make beelines back to urban areas. Why are some deer suitable for translocation, while others seem destined to repeat their past mistakes? That is one area researchers say they want to investigate, to figure out which does may be better suited for translocation. As project lead Ian Adams said to the Pioneer during an interview, “You can take the deer out of the urban, but it’s hard to take the urban out of the deer.”

More education on any issue is always welcome.

Whether translocation turns into a well-used tool for communities, or a failed experiment, is yet to be determined. But knowledge defeats ignorance, and it can help communities make more informed choices moving forward.

In the meantime, there is always room for us to do better. Last weekend, I saw a deer wandering down 8th Ave. The doe plucked a mandarin orange off the street and popped it in her mouth. I wonder why anyone, ungulates included, would ever leave, when we make it so comfortable for them to stay in town?

Chance to retrain the wild turkeys Dear Editor: The wild turkey: what a fascinating story. Wild turkeys arrived over 11 million years ago, evolving into the 6 sub-species we have today. Ancient civilizations, the Aztecs and the Mayans, revered the wild turkey. Twice a year the Aztecs held festivals in their honour and the Mayans did similar. Turkeys were most important to the Navajo and other indigenous tribes.

By 1940 they were all but extinct. Indiscriminate hunting and habitat loss left us with just a few thousand. Heroic conservation efforts by the U.S. and Canada saved them. The few pockets of wild turkeys in B.C.’s southeast were introduced as part of that effort. After a miracle comeback, wild turkeys are once again on the decline.

Benjamin Franklin called them “birds of courage.” Intelligent, turkeys are a curious animal, gregarious and extremely social, even with people—

that’s what gets them in trouble. With little effort this bird can be “re-habituated” somewhere out of town for the few winter months that they present a problem. Let’s not miss this glorious opportunity to attract wildlife watchers to the most interesting and entertaining animal we have out here.

Don’t go to government. Turkeys are designated an “alien species,” not native—although sightings go back to 1910—they have no provincial status. With no status government can hire a contractor to get them exterminated. That’s where it appears to be heading—thanks to a propaganda blitz by local government. Why is it politicians want to kill everything they can’t understand or outsmart? What a crime that would be against this noble bird with such a proud history.

Fun with fatbikes The third annual fatbike ride was held at the end of December, with happy riders hitting the Westside Legacy Trail. The event, organized by the Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance and the trail team, saw about a dozen riders roll out.

Locals ski for a toonie next Saturday at Fairmont

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Fairmont Hot Springs Resort is welcoming locals from Canal Flats to Brisco for an annual party on the slopes where they can ski and swim for a toonie.

“We try to get as many people out as possible,” said Peter Harding, who manages the resort’s ski area.

“It’s our way of showing our appreciation to the local market that’s sup-

ported the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort over the years through buying swim passes, season passes, golfing, using our food and beverage facilities, (and generally) supporting our company.”

A DJ will be cranking the tunes, while locals enjoy s’mores and cotton candy and while children participate in special activities. For an extra toonie, locals will also get to try out the tube park for an hour.

“A lot of people have a lot of fun,” Mr. Harding said. “It ends up just being

a big social for the day.”

Mr. Harding wants all locals to have the opportunity to enjoy the resort’s amenities no matter their financial situation and said that Toonie Day makes skiing an option for those on tight budgets.

“A lot of people can’t afford a season pass for the year... so it’s an opportunity for them to come up,” he said.

Mr. Harding expects to see 300 to 400 locals come out for Toonie Day and is looking forward to seeing all the fa-

miliar Valley faces.

“It’s fun to see all the locals out,” he said. “We’ve had people come up who had to blow the dust off their skis because they hadn’t skied in years.”

Toonie Day will take place on Saturday, January 19th. The hill will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. as residents trade their toonies for a day of fun. Locals will need to bring ID that shows their address.

Blooming World Cannabis will offer two more open houses on Friday, January 11th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday, January 12th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Mr. Hogue said the open houses are an opportunity to clear up any misunderstandings, to address issues that could be of concern and “to know how we can improve.”

Generally he and Marjorie Fournier – the manager-to-be – said they find that most people are either indifferent or support their plans.

In some cases they’ve found that conversations where they have the opportunity to correct any misunderstandings bring the skeptics onto their side.

For instance Ms. Fournier said some people have been worried about the smell.

Since their products will come pre-packed and will not be consumed on site, she said: “There won’t be any smell at all.”

When the issue of smell came up at their open house, Mr. Wernig passed around samples of the packaging that will encase their products. Joints will be sealed in plastic and packed in boxes. Other items will come in plastic bottles like aspirin containers.

The owners have also heard from people who have concerns about security, but Mr. Hogue said the shop would be “one of the most secure on the whole strip.”

While he said the government is “really strict” about security requirements for retail cannabis shops, he and Ms. Fournier said Blooming World Cannabis will go beyond the requirements with extra cameras, extra lighting, a motion sensor, a glass sensor and more.

Just like with a liquor store, no one will be allowed to consume the products in the shop, he said, addressing another issue they’ve been asked about. Due to a bylaw Invermere established prior to le-

galization, smokers are also not permitted to light up in parks or on trails or pathways in Invermere.

“Just like beer, you do it at home when you’re safe and you want to relax and enjoy it with your friends,” he said.

Although he freely admits there are drawbacks to cannabis, Mr. Hogue has personal experience with its benefits. He said he has always had trouble with his back. When he worked in construction and on the oil rigs, he was taking so many over-the-counter pain killers that he suffered from heartburn and was developing ulcers. After a motorbike accident in June, Mr. Hogue’s doctor recommended that he try cannabis instead.

“It really helped me to relax all my muscles and helped me to sleep,” he said.

Mr. Hogue hopes that Blooming World Cannabis will be approved so he can provide information, help others find relief and offer those who are already in the market for cannabis the opportunity to purchase safe and regulated products.

“There’s a lot of people using, or wanting to,” he said. “If people got a clean way to do it, they will do it.”

After checking out other retail cannabis locations in Kimberley, Ms. Fournier said: “It’s surprising how (customers are) people of any age.”

Mr. Hogue agreed and said customers belong to all professions too.

“This is our little baby. Hopefully it’s going to come together,” he said.

Dust off your clubs: the 18th annual Kinsmen Snow Golf tournament is this Saturday, January 12th. This event always draws out an enthusiastic group of golfers, ready to have an icy blast golfing on Lake Windermere.

Chairman Steve Kuffler says they average about 20 teams each year, though there is room for more. Funds raised go to help within the community where it is needed. While it is for a good cause, it doesn’t mean teams can’t have fun doing it. Some teams bring quads or snowmobiles, hook up trailers and haul around barbecues or even chesterfields onto the course.

“It’s the guaranteed best round of golf of the year,” Mr. Kuffler assures.

“It’s so much fun out there; people have a blast.”

Shotgun start is at 12 p.m for the scramble format event. The course is set up right on the white expanse of the lake, so coloured balls are recommended. Mr. Kuffler says they are staying positive that the ice, which has taken an unusually long time to thicken this year, will be ready for Saturday.

YOUR MONEY Weaknesses of Index Funds and ETFs Submitted by Sara Worley and Brendan Donahue Investment Advisors, Manulife Securities Incorporated Much has been said about the inability of active managers to beat the stock markets. While this is sometimes true, it’s not always the case. In fact, passive management can easily expose people to undesirable investments, without realizing or intending to do so.

Passive Investing Overview There are two broad categories of investment management: active and passive. Active management is the practice of trading carefully selected investments based on relevant information. Passive investing is mirroring the components of a market index and is usually done through an index mutual fund or an exchange-traded fund (ETF). For example, the iShares Canada S&P/TSX 60 Index ETF (symbol XIU on the Toronto Stock Exchange) is invested in the 60 stocks of the S&P/TSX 60 index on a market capitalization basis.

If an investor feels bullish on large Canadian equities, owning an ETF such as XIU is a good choice. After all, how worrisome is it to own Royal Bank, CN Rail, Canadian Natural Resources or Manulife Financial stock?

The issue Where ETFs or index funds can become problematic is when they are used to gain access to smaller or more volatile sectors of the economy. Along with the potential upside of an index comes 100 per cent of the index’s risk.

That risk becomes more emphasized as the scope of the ETF narrows. Additionally, the assets of an index fund or ETF must remain invested in a manner that replicates its underlying index, no matter what happens in the financial markets.

For example, during the financial crisis of 20082009, index funds had no choice but to continue holding the underlying indexes. The above-mentioned ETF, XIU, fell almost 50 per cent in less than a year, taking their investors along for the ride. Due to strategic trading, most actively managed Canadian equity mutual funds did not experience such declines.

Company risk Another huge risk to index funds and ETFs is company risk, particularly in smaller, more popular areas of the economy. Demand for investments in these sectors can make it far too easy for bad companies to raise capital.

For example, consider the income trust sector during 2001-2008. Historically only used by the petroleum and real estate companies, corporations of all kinds, bolstered by extremely favorable tax rules and yield-hungry investors, began converting their common shares to income trust units. By 2005 the income trust sector in Canada was worth $160 billion, and income trusts were added to Canadian indexes.

Due to the prospect of easy money, the income trust sector attracted a lot of very poor companies. The quality of the sector began to fall. Because index funds and ETFs hold everything in their sector, they had no choice but to buy income trusts, regardless of quality. With an active investment strategy, a fund manager can pick and choose what to hold.

Company risk can also take the form of a company behaving in a certain way in order to meet the criteria of a particular index. For example, a poor-quality company may raise their dividend each year to an increasingly unsustainable level in order to continue being included in certain indexes. While a professional manager would be able to look beyond a dividend to discern the true health of a company, an index would simply include the company without further analysis.

Who should be wary?

Everyone who indexes should be cautious. After all, they are buying a specific sector of the economy in an unmanaged fashion. If that sector experiences high volatility or contains a lot of poor-quality companies, so will the investor’s portfolio.

Because there is no decision making involved, index funds and ETFs tend to have lower costs than actively managed funds. This can be a selling feature but should not be viewed as the most important factor of investment selection. People should always look beyond costs to understand why they are actually investing in, and consult with a financial advisor for further information.

#20inthesky forever Printed here are excerts from a speech given during a special ceremony last Saturday, January 5th. The ceremony honoured former Rockies player Jayden Jefferson, who passed away as a result of injuries in a car crash last October: Tonight we would like to honour the life of our fallen teammate taken too soon, Jayden Bryan Jefferson.

Born and raised in Invermere, Jayden grew up playing minor hockey. From the age of three Jayden’s dream was to play for the Columbia Valley Rockies Junior B Hockey Team which he achieved playing with the team from 2014 to 2017.

Jayden played 4 games during the 2013-2014 season as an affiliate with team.

In all Jayden played 117 games for the Columbia Valley Rockies.

Jayden played his last game as a Rockie on November 4th, 2017 right here at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena against the Grand Forks Border Bruins. He had his last point as a Rockie in that game with an assist in the second period.

Grand Forks and Jayden always seemed to cross paths. Jayden’s girlfriend Morgan is from Grand Forks. The last goal Jayden scored in Junior B hockey was October 28th. Again it was in the second period against the Grand Forks Border Bruins.

This time the game was played in Grand Forks.

Tonight, to honour Jayden, when the Rockies score a goal we will play Chelsea Dagger which was the goal song when Jayden last scored.

Jayden as a hockey player was big, strong and a great skater. He had a good shot and great understanding for the game.

Jayden was a good teammate and was always there for the other players. He was the type of person that was first to the rink and early for every practice or team event.

Jayden was coachable and had the mentality that he was going to get better everyday whether it was at a workout or on the ice.

He was the type of kid you could count on to get the job done whatever the task.

Jayden was a pillar of the community and always represented our team and his dream the Rockies with dignity and pride. It was always obvious that young minor hockey players, teammates, friends and members of the community looked toward him with enormous respect and admiration.

The Columbia Valley Rockies will honour Jayden by retiring his playing number 20. In addition the Rockies will place a jersey in the foyer where future Rockies will always remember.

Thank you. Jayden you will be forever missed and we will always remember you. #20 in the sky.

Two Invermere locals on a Tuk Tuk chase Submitted Two brothers from the Columbia Valley are part of a team on a journey of a lifetime right now. And Lawson and Daniel Eberhard, who still have parents and extended family in the area, are part of a team racing by Tuk Tuk in India to raise money for education to underprivildged women in India and a chairty that focuses on environmental initiatives.

They are part of a team of five friends who have embarked on a Tuk Tuk charity race through India.

Tuk Tuks are three-seater-three-wheeled and notoriously unstable and slow. The team has no set route, aside from where they begin and end, and no back up support or accommodation planned. They are simply relying on their ingenuity and teamwork. Todd Teigland, Lawson Eberhard, and Darren Smith, who

met in Kelowna, started working in film and TV together, and eventually applied to join the same film technician crew all at the same time. Aside from the pure adventure involved in the trip, these big-hearted guys are raising money for two non-profits; IImpact, which helps provide an education to underprivileged women in India, and Cool Earth, a charity that works alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation and climate change. According to Mr. Eberhard, right about the time this week’s Pioneer is printed, the team should be about halfway through their adventure. However, they are still collecting donations. You can donate by going to www.gofundme. com and search for ‘Tuk Tuk Goose’. As of Tuesday’s press time, the team had raised $9,455, more than $3,000 above their $6,000 goal.

The team is currently on their grand adventure, riding Tuk Tuks through India for a fundraiser.

Bonspiel on the Lake just around the corner

By Lorene Keitch lorene@columbiavalleypioneer.com There are several uncertainties when it comes to the annual Bonspiel on the Lake. Will the conditions be suitable for ice building? Will the weather cooperate?

And just how many years has this event run for anyway (various sources peg the event somewhere on the 35 year mark, give or take a few). What is certain, however, is the volume of fun to be had at the most unique curling event of the season.

Everyone, from the amateur to the pro and from young to old, can be seen grinning from ear to ear as they lead, sweep and shout their way through the three-day event.

The 35th’ish Bonspiel on the Lake takes place January 18-20. If you have never wandered down to the shores of Kinsmen Beach to watch, you are missing out on a spectacle. Teams often suit up in matching outfits or funny costumes. The nearby cook shack supplies fresh hot hamburgers, the smell tantalizing tastebuds over the ice. As dusk turns to nightfall, strings of lights provide a canopy of magic. And the sense of camaraderie and mirth sprinkles the atmosphere as players revel in the joy of the game.

Curling club president Rick Lyuendyk says while some teams approach the bonspiel with a competitive spirit, others come just for fun. One of the great features of this bonspiel is it brings the pros and less-than-pros together.

“It evens the playing field,” he says.

“It takes awhile to figure out what a sheet of ice is doing.”

Judy Dow, one of the organizers, agrees.

“The lake is a really great equalizer,” she says. “You could be a top notch curler and not figure out the ice. It humbles anyone, and anyone can win.”

There are 64 teams registered (the max number), coming from local curlers, across B.C. and Alberta, and even from as far away as Seattle. Ms. Dow says many of the same teams come back year after year, and there is always a waiting list.

“It’s like a homecoming,” she describes.

While there are many who come just for fun, there is incentive to take it seriously, with beautiful handcrafted Bavin glass curling rock prizes for the top team in each division, and prizes for the top 16. Each team is guaranteed four curling games, and entry fee includes a dinner and dance Saturday, January 19th at the Columbia Valley Centre. There are still some tickets available for the dinner and dance; call the curling centre to purchase.

File photo Making the ice Perry Horning is Mr. Ice Master. For 33 years, he has poured his energy into creating the playing surface for the annual event.

“It’s 100 per cent weather dependent.

The ice condition, snow, rain – all those kinds of things – come into play,” he explains. “Even if it’s too cold we can’t make ice because we can’t flood it.”

Ideal temperatures to build the ice are between 0 and -10 degrees. And even after the ice is made, they have to monitor it. If it snows, it needs to be shovelled off quickly so it doesn’t mess up the ice. If it’s too warm, puddles cause problems such as during last year’s ice prep. They cut pockets in the low ice and used sump pumps to pump the water out, which worked like a charm, Mr. Horning reports.

“You get a bunch of minds together and everyone works together as a team and we get quite creative at times,” he reports.

Mr. Horning, a B.C. wildfire fighter by trade, says there are actually a lot of similarities between fighting fires and building the curling surface on Lake Windermere.

“Everything is constantly changing, and you have to be able to respond,” he comments.

Mr. Horning is not too worried yet about the warmer than average temperatures, choosing to remain optimistic that the ice will be solid enough by bonspiel weekend. If it isn’t, they have a contingency plan (moving the bonspiel indoors).

He estimates somewhere in the range of 500 total volunteer hours are required to put on the annual event, including building the rink, putting up the boards, setting up the cook shack and coordinating the teams.

Mr. Horning says he is more than happy to let someone else take the lead on ice making any time now, and can show him or her all the techniques and tricks he’s learned over the last three decades of ice making. But, at the end of the day, he is glad the job is getting done so the tournament – the curling club’s biggest annual fundraiser- can continue.

“The thing I get out of it is watching everyone have so much fun. It’s a lot of sportsmanship, and everyone has a good time. That’s enough payment for me.”

“The deer have really not harmed anyone,” Ms. Brass says.

Ms. Brass feels a special connection to deer after several memorable encounters, including when her father was dying of cancer and seven deer came out of the forest, up the footpath to her parent’s door, and stood there for more than 10 minutes in silence. It made her father smile, and Ms. Brass feels the deer were paying their respects to her father with their gesture.

She says communities should use other methods to discourage deer from becoming a nuisance, or simply re-translocate the deer if they migrate to an urban area.

But Mr. Adams says the problem with relocating an already translocated deer is it does not change that deer’s behaviour.

“We have tried moving deer a second time and that simply ended up with the habituated deer again wandering

until she found another community where she continued her behaviour and eventually had to be put down because of aggressive encounters.”

When the Pioneer interviewed Kimberley CAO Scott Sommerville in December, the city of Kimberley was in the process of getting the contract order in place to tranquilize the deer in Canal Flats.

Deer are a pressing issue in Kimberley, with urban deer leading to run-ins in the community, especially with dogs, Mr. Sommerville reports.

“You can’t throw a snowball without hitting one,” Mr. Sommerville describes.

The city has tried other methods including hazing [using shepherd dogs to push urban deer out], but the deer just return. Kimberley pays for an educator to go into classrooms and teach students how to avoid deer conflict,

and they are watching with interest the study of birth control for urban deer. The District of Invermere’s choice to do selective culls is not really something the Kimberley council “has an appetite” for, Mr. Sommerville says.

The CAO in Kimberley points out while urban wildlife has been placed in the lap of municipalities, the responsibility should not fall to individual communities.

“Cities are not geared to deal with this. We don’t have jurisdiction over wildlife. We have to ask for permission to deal with the province’s deer because they won’t, and we feel obligated to protect public safety, so we willingly accept responsibility, and paying for it with taxpayer money,” he says. “We don’t have conservation officers, we’re not biologists. But we do it because the province isn’t and we’re worried about the safety of our residents and our pets.”

The permit states Kimberley has up to one year to remove the deer and any offspring that move into an urban area.

“Whether we do remove deer born to translocated does will depend on our ability to be 100% certain that they belong to the translocated doe. That is not always possible,” explains Mr. Adams. “For example, on a recent visual check of Canal Flats, we saw 3 does, including one translocated in March, 2018. There were 5 fawns with those 3 does - there was no way to tell which fawn belonged to whom.”

But aside from the translocated deer in Canal Flats, the majority from the 2018 trial have not caused conflict.

“The vast majority of deer translocated in 2018 have remained out of the communities,” Mr. Adams comments.

“It is unfortunate that any face lethal removal, but if the alternative is either culling or allowing urban populations to increase unchecked in places like Kimberley, Invermere and elsewhere, then this seems a reasonable outcome. Yes, a compromise. Translocation gives deer a chance.”

Urban deer translocation as a whole is still quite new in the province, reports Holger Bohm, fish and wildlife section head for the Kootenay Boundary region.

“We are the pioneers on this,” Mr. Bohm says. “There are other cities that have thought about this (translocation), but this has been trialed, to my knowledge, only here.”

He says the requirement to mandate the originating community to deal with the persistently-urban deer is to make sure the problem is not simply moved around communities.

“If everybody translocates and they show up in neighbouring communities, then nobody wins,” says Mr. Bohm.

“In the bigger picture, if this is to be working in the future for all communities, we have to make sure the communities know they are responsible for those animals even beyond translocation.”

With the trial still underway, Mr. Bohm says they are hoping after this winter to have enough data to conclude the trial. They are still working through some questions, including how many animals can be put into backcountry areas suitable for the deer, and whether urban deer carry any diseases that wild deer don’t and if there could be contamination concerns.

“It’s still a trial. We still have to figure out some of the kinks, and we hope we can tie it in a package that will make it operational and make everyone happy,” he says.

Mayor Al Miller confirms the cull is still operational in the District.

“It’s a management tool that has been recommended by the government,” he says, but adds that the District has not had to do much culling in the last couple of years other than for several problematic deer.

Mr. Miller says while it is not a top priority for him right now, he would like to have a discussion around urban deer again at some point.

“The ultimate goal is to give communities that are dealing with urban deer multiple options of dealing with them,” says Mr. Bohm.

And the trial has answered definitively the question of whether urban deer would have higher rates of death by predator. Mr. Adams says some opponents of translocation have said in the past that sending urban deer in the wild would be akin to sending lambs to the slaughter. However, the results proved similar rates of predation for urban and non-urban deer. But, the translocated deer did have higher rates of mortality from other causes, including starvation.

and staff, just to see how the program is going,” he says.

The District tracks the culled numbers annually. From December 2016 to March 2017, 17 deer were removed, with meat provided to the Columbia Valley Food Bank. District of Invermere CAO Chris Prosser reported in December that from November 2017 to March 2018, zero deer were removed from Invermere.

“Last year we made the decision not to cull as our numbers were below 100 deer when the annual deer count was completed and we only had one complaint of an aggressive deer in the summer of 2017,” Mr. Prosser says. “This year’s count is slightly above 100 deer in the community, but we have had 19 complaints of aggressive deer. We are currently waiting for approval of our permit, but will be discussing ways to resolve the aggressive deer issues with the Conservation Officers, provided we get our permit approved.”

MINOR HOCKEY WEEK 2019 Submitted by Windermere Minor Hockey Society The Senior Girls team had an action packed couple days to start 2019, beginning Thursday January 3rd with 2 re-scheduled back to back games against the Rockyview Rockies. The girls came off their break and picked up where they left off with 2 victories 8-2 & 6-3. They then hit the road to Siksika on Saturday January 5th where puck and player movement was unbelievable and pulled out a victory 13-1. The following day they finished their opening weekend to the 2nd half of the season 4-0 beating Innisfail 12-3. There was no single outstanding effort on the team, they all played very well, although Taya Anderson, a defence player who moved to forward has come out of the weekend with 7 goals and recorded her first hat trick in Innisfail.

The Bantam team hosted a tournament on the weekend finishing 3rd in a well matched tournament. The local team played Friday night against Sylvan Lake, and led for much of the game, but lost in the third period. They played again at 6:45 a.m. and found out that they aren’t an early morning team, losing to Red Deer. In the afternoon game they then beat Cochrane. The final game on Sunday was again against Red Deer, and they beat them 6-4 giving them 3rd place in the tournament.

Zack Smith and Kyle Brunner both had 3 goals during the weekend.

The defence came through with goals from Ryan Neal, Braxton Gulliford, Jake Bradley, Ayden Taylor, and Paddy Donahue (2). Others scoring were Carson Jefferson, Ryder Shmigelsky, Brayden Mastroianni (2), Luke Schaal (2), Leif Dubreuil and Lukas Pfisterer. The team travels to Creston for a tournament next weekend.

The Peewee B team travelled to Marysville where they lost to a strong Kimberley team.

P IONEER C LASSIFIEDS S OBITUARY S Gagatek, Christine May 30, 1933 – December 21, 2018

It is with great sadness that the family of Christine Gagatek announces her passing on December 21, in Invermere BC. Christine was born in St. Paul, Karnten Austria. She lived and worked in Austria, Italy and Switzerland in the hospitality industry before moving to Invermere, BC at the age of 19. In this new country, she married Mike Gagatek, learned how to speak English and worked with him to build a life for them here.

Her passions were cooking, entertaining and tending her large garden, which fed her family year-round. She had many friends with whom to share a drink and a meal, and because of her caring, loving and generous personality, and her amazing food, people would gather in her kitchen.

Christine will be remembered by her sons, Walter (Kim), Arnie (Barb) and Norman (Kimberley); her grandchildren, Jessica, Natalie (Will), Ben, Lauren (Breanne), Braeden, and Quinn; her great-granddaughter Claire; and all her family in Europe.

S OBITUARY S WALLACE, Philip George Philip George Wallace passed away in Sundre, Alberta, doing what he loved best – exploring the outdoors, surrounded by loved ones, on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at the age of 76 years. A Memorial Service was held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery), on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 2 p.m.

The family wishes to thank the COHO and Hospital staff as well as Dr. Schaffer for the outstanding care they provided Christine during her stay.

Beavis, Leonard Charles 1926 – 2018

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Leonard Beavis announces his passing on Thursday, December 27, 2018 in Invermere, BC at 92 years of age.

Leonard was born on December 2, 1926 in Winnipeg, MB. He worked for Eaton’s in Winnipeg for 30 years and then at the mill in Invermere until his retirement. Len was a gentleman, always kind and friendly and pleasant to talk to.

He prided himself at retesting himself twice a year for his driver’s license. Len was always tinkering, loved woodworking and doing small engine repairs. He would never pass you by without extending a helping hand. Len loved to fish, hunt, travel and go back country hiking.

Len is survived by his sons Larry (Dorothy), Alfred (Gail) and Patrick (Jo-Anne), his daughters Kim (Glenn) and Miriam (Colin), many grandchildren and great-grandchildren across BC, AB and MB. Len was predeceased by Rita Beavis of Winnipeg and Maxime of Invermere.

Many thanks from our family to the close friends and neighbours who watched out for Len in his later years.

A service for Len will be held in Winnipeg at a later date. He will be interred with his mother and father. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Len may do so to the Red Cross or your charity of choice.

Bavin, Bonnie 1950-2019

Bonnie Bavin (nee Lepage) was born in Rossland, BC to parents Joyce and Albert on August 7, 1950.

Bonnie grew up in this mountain town where she developed her love for the outdoors and her early talent and passion for skiing at Red Mountain. Here, she met her future husband, Pat, in 1970 on the slopes of “Red” as members of the Selkirk College ski team. Bonnie went on to UBC, studying math and physical education before marrying in 1973 and relocating to Windermere, BC where they welcomed their first son, Ryan, a year later and youngest son, Marc, in 1977.

Bonnie was the great outdoor mom, living the Kootenay lifestyle always with family and friends on the lake, in the mountains, on the slopes or trails. She was known for her big smile, her equally big hair and positive yet competitive spirit, all of which were present whether skiing, windsurfing or battling a friend in squash. Bonnie’s many talents led her to work in various local jobs at the Valley Fitness Centre, Radium and Panorama Resorts, and was everything from trail builder, excavator, ski instructor, and realtor. Bonnie was a designer and artist and her entrepreneurial drive was instrumental to family operations such as KRS, the Courtyard Café and Bavin Glassworks. She volunteered her time as a Beaver Leader, to the Nancy Greene League, as a Panorama Foundation board member and more. Bonnie enjoyed a life rich with travel, adventure, nature, and the love of family and great friends.

Bonnie is survived by husband Pat, sons Ryan (Tina) and Marc (Carrie) and the Lepage family of Holly, Albert (Janet), Gordy (Lynn), Terry (Lori) and Cheri (Dave) and all of their children.

An outdoor gathering will take place at the Windermere Public Beach at noon on Saturday, January 12th followed by an informal reception at Winderberry Nursery starting around 1:30 pm. Please dress warmly, wear sturdy footwear and carpool. In lieu of flowers please consider donations to Ovarian Cancer Canada.

Tony Von Niessen was born on April 20, 1927, in Herbert, Saskatchewan, and passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 11, 2018 in Comox Valley Hospital.

Tony was predeceased by his parents Peter and Mary and his brothers Fred and Terry. He is survived by his wife Pauline (nee Dowling), his love for 60 years.

Tony and Pauline have four children: Mary Lou (Dave), Patti (Bob), Chris (Lorna), and Philip. He loved his six grandchildre: Peter (Evy), Robyn, Thomas (Danielle), Cameron, C.J. (Cassandra), and Matthew.

He lived long enough to enjoy seven great-grandchildren: Avery, Kamille, Hollis, Lincoln, Cohen, Isaac, and Elianna.

Tony and Pauline built their home in Athalmer, BC, in the Columbia River Valley.

Tony was a well-respected resident. He was known to be an honest and fair businessman, barber, and later used bookstore dealer. He was an active member of the Invermere Volunteer Fire Department and especially enjoyed the Fireman’s Ball.

Tony was an accomplished finishing woodworker, spending many hours constructing jewelry boxes, medicine cabinets and children toys; a lot of which are still used today.

Tony was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking. The family table was often set with bounty from his hunting and fishing trips and from family outings for wild mushrooms or berry picking expeditions.

Tony was a very sociable man and was often seen wearing colorful Hawaiian shirts or sweaters.

Tony’s greatest love was his family. His dedication as a husband and father was his greatest accomplishment. He loved and was loved by us all…a true sign of a good father and husband.

A celebration of his life will be held in the spring on Vancouver Island.

Many of us were taught that death is a part of life, but not many of us have been taught how to handle the grieving that naturally follows the death of a loved one. In a society that advocates moving fast and immediate results, we tend not to value the purpose and importance of slow-moving processes such as grief. We think that grief is an event that needs to be “gotten over” or that “closure” is necessary; the truth is grief is a process that deliberately and necessarily slows us down.

The symptoms of grief are varied, and often we misread the cues. We push through the pain, burying and carrying our grief instead of supporting ourselves and each other in moving through it. The unfortunate result of buried and carried grief is that the joy of life diminishes over time.

We feel tired and listless; slowly the spark that makes life worth living dwindles.

The good news is it need not be like this. We can learn how to move through grief in healthy and mindful ways. If we have been burying and carrying our grief, we can do catch-up mourning. As we slow down, follow our inner guidance, and learn how to convert our grief to mourn-

ing, we can move through the grief process in gentle ways. The symptoms of grief become our pathway to healing. If you know someone who is having a hard time working through their grief, if you are grieving, or dealing with buried and carried grief, the key is to trust the process, follow where it leads, and ask for help if you need it; you are not alone.

Duties: The Safe Homes support worker is part of a team of casual staff that agrees to carry a cellular phone and serve scheduled on-call duty for the Safe Homes Program. Support workers are on-call on week days and evenings, weekends and statutory holidays. When called out, the support worker provides a confidential emergency service for the provision of temporary, safe and supportive accommodation for women and their children who have experienced or who are at risk of abuse, threats or violence. Support workers will provide transportation, information, support and, when appropriate, follow-up support for women.

Qualifications: A Grade 12 diploma, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills, and some knowledge of women’s issues with a feminist perspective. A valid B.C. driver’s license is essential, as is the time and willingness to receive some training in program-specific work, as required, prior to the onset of employment.

Functional Responsibilities: Provide receptionist, clerical and secretarial support to the Executive Director and staff of Family Dynamix.

Qualifications: Grade 12 diploma, plus two (2) years experience in general office work. Must be able to work in a team environment. Able to demonstrate good computer and office skills, the ability to multitask in a busy office environment, and work well with the public. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Publisher software required. The ability to work in Microsoft Access would be an asset.

Life Skills Worker - Youth Continuing Part-time Position

Hours: up to 10 hours per week Shift schedule: Days, evenings and weekends are required Start date: February 15, 2019 (target) Duties: Provides direct goal-oriented assistance to youth between 13 and 18 years of age who have a developmental disability. This assistance can include the development of appropriate social, life or other particular skills by the youth and/or the development of child management or other parenting skills to families.

A little help along the way

By Pastor Murray Wittke Valley Christian Assembly Recently I laughed, cried, pondered and savored my way through two books

by Anne Lamott. She’s a San Francisco writer who has embraced a progressive, northern California brand of Christianity. She’s a very different bird from a very different flock than those I generally fly with.

In “Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith” she tells the story of her haphazard and chaotic spiritual journey. She’s amazingly transparent as she describes each faltering step toward faith in God. You walk with her through decades of drug addiction, alcoholism, and bulimia and then the fears, joys, and tribulations of living as a single mother. She gives thanks for an eclectic mix of spiritual friends who helped her along the way including Jesuits, Buddhists,

Jews, Catholics, and a Christian Scientist. But she’s the most grateful for a tiny multi-ethnic Presbyterian congregation in a ramshackle building in the bad part of town that welcomed her at her worst and who've become her spiritual family. In “Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith” she continues her story but now as the single mother of a teenager. Her language can be coarse but in both books she grants you an intimate look into her life.

As I listened to her heart and looked at life through her eyes I caught a glimpse of the confusion, fear, disappointment, and hope common to all of our spiritual journeys.

I discovered a woman who loves people, grieves their losses, and aches for their suffering. She’s helped me see we’re all much more alike than we are different. It’s just that we seldom pause long enough to listen to one another.

It’s easy to avoid those with different opinions, traditions, values, or lifestyles. It’s even easier to huddle with people like ourselves, affirming and reinforcing what we hold in common, and regard those who are different with suspicion and fear. I know all about this. Like Anne Lamott I’m also on a spiritual journey. Her books have helped me to respect those who are different. In this way I’m becoming a little more like Jesus. For this I am grateful.
