An ammonia leak in Langley’s Gloucester industrial park on Oct. 24 resulted in a two-day evacuation of local businesses and multiple road closures.

The leak was determined to have been caused by a problem with a refrigeration unit at Canature Processing, a freezedried pet food company in the 5200 block of 272nd Street.

Postal workers hit picket line in Langley Job action affected more than a dozen B.C. cities Monday KATYA SLEPIAN Black Press

Canada Post workers in more than a dozen cities across B.C., including Langley, walked off the job on Monday morning, as part of the union’s rotating strikes that began last week.

In a series of posts on social media, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers announced strikes in Surrey, Squamish, Chilliwack and Maple Ridge early Monday morning.

As of noon, they were joined by postal workers in Langley, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam, Abbotsford, New Westminster, Mission, Aldergrove, Delta and Prince George.

There would be no mail delivery or pickup in the striking cities.

Striking Langley postal worker Jessica Friesen said health, safety, and pay equity are among the key issues.

“We’re overburdened,” Friesen said.

“We have more injuries than any other federal sector in Canada.”

About 80 to 100 Langley employees were on the picket line Monday, and they expected to stay off until 8 a.m. Tuesday.

no local retail outlets, delivery is the only way right now to get legal retail marijuana in the Lower Mainland.

Canada Post spokesperson Jon Hamilton said the company remains “committed to the bargaining process” and that a federally-appointed mediator is helping with negotiations.

Hamilton said the employer has made “significant” offers to the union, including better wages, benefits, and job security, without asking

for concessions.

The union has said workers are striking for job security, better health and safety measures, an end to forced overtime, and service expansion and equality for rural and suburban mail carriers.

In a statement to Black Press Media, the union said Canada Post’s offers “don’t address a single one” of their issues.

“The wage increases Canada Post so proudly talks about are well-be-

“Management even refuses to address the urgent health and safety issues that have left postal workers the most injured group of workers in the federal sector.”

Monday’s strikes come on top of the 3,400 postal workers who walked off the job last week in Vancouver, North Vancouver, Burnaby and Richmond, and have since returned.

Elections BC said that the strikes

have not changed the dates for the planned referendum.

Spokesperson Andrew Watson confirmed that all voters are still expected to receive their ballots by Nov. 2 and are asked to mail them in before Nov. 30.

“We are monitoring the situation closely and we have some contingency within our planned delivery dates,” Watson said.

“But the chief electoral officer could extend the dates [past Nov. 30].”

Watson said that Elections BC was receiving plenty of calls and social media comments about their voting packages, but urged voters to be patient.

He said voters who don’t receive a package by Nov. 2 should ask for one

by Nov. 23 by visiting the website, by calling 1-800-661-8683, visiting a Service BC centre or the soon-to-be opened referendum service centres in the Lower Mainland.

A voting package delivery schedule is available online.

B.C. residents who’ve ordered pot from the province’s online cannabis store shouldn’t feel the impact of the strikes.

In a statement, the branch said it was monitoring the strikes closely but said the job action “will have little impact” on cannabis deliveries.

“Postal workers are fighting for good jobs, which balance work and home life, equality for all our workers and safe working condition,” said union national president Mike Palecek in a statement.

“We are also bargaining for the future – future employees and everyone who relies on the postal service.

“It’s time to look at expanded public services like postal banking and senior check-ins.”

“Ammonia is a very hazardous product and it can be hazardous to your health.

tight controls on standard operating procedures. The gas alarm detects parts per million, an alarm went off, the building evacuated and emergency personnel were called in to take control of the business.

“There was no danger to staff.”

Approximately 40 staff were on-site at Canature when the alarm sounded.

On Oct. 25, Canature staff had a meeting to discuss the incident, and to move forward with product safety training.

“We’ve been working with our contractor that built the system to get us to where we are today, so we have an all-clear system. We’re back to going through the step-by-step procedure for us internally to re-certify the system so all alarms and gas-detection systems are calibrated.”

Milne said something good has come out of the situation.

“From my perspective, there’s a silver lining in all of this.

“For ourselves, as a continuous improvement (and) learning experience, it’s a test of our protocols and standard operating procedures.”

According to an inspection report by WorkSafe BC, the highest reading of ammonia in the air was at 27 ppm on the night of Oct. 24.

By Oct. 25, the air monitoring levels within and around the plant were reported to hover around 0-1 ppm.

WorkSafe BC’s Ammonia in Refrigeration Systems guidebook says the maximum allowable concentration of ammonia that a person can be exposed to in an eight-hour period is 25 ppm.

All businesses that were affected by the leak were able to reopen in the morning of Oct. 26.

On Thursday, Nov. 1, RCMP Sgt. Lorne Lecker and Sgt. Roland Pierschke will be at the McDonald’s restaurant at 20037 84 Ave., from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for the Coffee with a Traffic Cop event.

Celebration of life set for Joy Richardson

A Celebration of Life will be held for Joy Richardson, a tireless campaigner for Langley’s equestrian community and founder of the Spirit of the Horse Garden in Campbell Valley park.

The event organized by the sport horse community will take place Sunday, Nov. 4 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the High Point Equestrian Centre at 658 200 St. It is open to all.

Richardson, a long time Langley equestrienne, passed away in August at the age of 92.

Born Oct. 5, 1925, in Lincolnshire, England, Richardson emigrated to British Columbia in 1957, and in 1969 bought Heritage Stables in Aldergrove. She won many awards with her quarter horses, Hyline Gentry and Hyline Paladin.

Later, after returning to England for several years, she came back to Langley and

She started up a small boarding business while working to improve the equestrian offerings of Campbell Valley Park, including the creation of the Spirit of the Horse Garden on 208 Street.

The garden, at the official entrance to the park, features the names of over 300 horses and their owners on bronze plaques, resting on a four-foot brick wall.

That same year, she was presented with a certificate of appreciation for her work on behalf of the Township.

On Aug. 21, Richardson died peacefully in the presence of her son and close friends.

Disaster averted It could have been so much worse.

When the alarm sounded at Canature, a freezedried dog food manufacturer in Gloucester industrial park, last Wednesday morning, it was a signal to staff that something had gone wrong with the company’s refrigeration unit — that it was now leaking deadly ammonia.

The gas was contained in a vaccuum chamber, staff quickly evacuated the building, emergency services were called and roads around the business were closed to traffic.

Employees of nearby businesses were either evacuated or to told to shelter in place as firefighters ensured the gas was contained and began the slow and deliberate process of venting it safely away over the next 40 hours.

Everything worked just as it was supposed to and, happily, nobody was killed or injured.

But the threat was real, Township fire chief Russ Jenkins said Thursday “Ammonia is a very hazardous product and it can be hazardous to your health. Anytime when it’s contained in an area where it can’t vent naturally, there’s going to be high concentrations, which will be hazardous to anyone entering.”

That’s precisely what happened in Fernie, where three workers died one year ago this month.

An investigation into the October 2017 tragedy in the East Kootenays revealed that a small hole in the aging brine chilling machine at the community’s ice rink was what led to the disaster.

In the Langley incident, the worst result was that some area businesses had to close and lost nearly two full days of operation, with at least one company reopening shortly after midnight Friday and scrambling to catch up once they’d been given the all clear.

We take for granted that the systems put in place to protect us from the potential hazards of our industrial living environment will work, but that’s only part of the picture. It’s the human factor that is dependably unpredictable.

Whether we’re ignoring the check engine light on our car or the fire alarm in our apartment building that seems to be going off constantly, we can be our own worst enemies when it comes to safety.

For Canature CEO John Milne, last week’s incident had an unexpected bright side “From my perspective, there’s a silver lining in all of this,” he said, because it allowed the company a chance to test its procedures and protocols.

It’s far better to examine what went wrong when all the things that matter most went right. And at the end of the day, everyone got to go home.

Many parents felt that, because they were raised to respect the church, you were likely asking for it if some religious figure at your school felt the need to beat the devil out of you.

It was a trying time for many of us, and we couldn’t wait to get out the school door at 3 p.m. every day.

The only advantage I saw to nurturing this type of learning environment was that I always got good marks.

Heaven help you if you didn’t.

While there are some discipline issues in today’s school, I tend to think that educators made the right decision to step away from demeaning and actually physically hurting kids as punishment.

Most of the kids I meet these days actually like being in school and being educated, and they seem much more relaxed and adjusted than many of my classmates were at their age.

Any adult that raises his hand to hurt a child should be prosecuted.

I wish it was that way when I was a kid.

It has bothered me considerably, that his predecessor was prepared to accept LRT when the money could be found for the other cities in the Lower Mainland — Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, New Westminster, Coquitlam and part of Surrey, to have SkyTrain.

Our taxes contributed to SkyTrain in the those

cities and now our leaders are prepared to be pushed around and told Surrey/Langley cannot afford SkyTrain.

What are we, the poor cousins?

Remember, most of the mayors who voted for us to have LRT, have SkyTrain in their cities.

WHEN RAINWATER CAME DOWN the chimney during a storm and soaked the carpet around Anne’s fireplace,

her son was quick to pop by her Langley bungalow to fix the issue. To speed the drying process, he pulled up the carpet and left with a warning to tread carefully around the hazard.

“What did I do?” Anne asks rhetorically with a lilting Scottish laugh, “I fell right over it! And then I lay on the floor for three hours. I had Lifeline, but the thing was, it was in the drawer,” Anne tells the story with selfdeprecating humour. Her injuries weren’t serious, but the incident raised questions for Anne and her family about her safety around the house.

Seniors face many safety concerns day to day. There are physical challenges that come with ageing eyesight and slower reflexes. Increasingly there are also hazards that come from external sources: phone calls requesting credit card information, credible-looking emails asking for banking information, voicemails asserting you’re involved in a lawsuit.

“Safety for seniors is often about practical things: night lights in the hallway, grab bars in the bathroom, cell phones close by,” says Shannon Saunders, Manager of Sunridge Gardens in Murrayville. “But I’ve found the best safety practice for seniors is to be surrounded by a strong support system.”

The age-old adage, ‘there’s safety in numbers’ proves true as seniors navigate the realities of home and personal safety.

Screen-free entertainment for kids Luna Cheng, who grew up in Langley, is one of the creators of the ‘BoredBox’

A Vancouver mom with Langley roots is one of the minds behind a new screen-free toy for kids.

Luna Cheng, who moved from Taiwan to Langley when she was 13 years old, and graduated from the Langley Fundamental school, is working on a startup product called BoredBox with her business partner, Kate Isaac.

“It was about a year and a half ago when my business partner, Kate, had the idea and approached me. I thought it was a great idea because I desperately needed something like this as well.

“I figured if we both needed it, then there must be a need for it.”

BoredBox is a self-contained activity kit that includes materials for a range of activities, such as a chalkboard, markers, puzzles and colouring roll.

Since the BoredBox is still in its early stages, it can be pre-ordered online.

After receiving the BoredBox, parents can opt-in to a subscription service to receive activity refills to their homes on a regular basis.

Cheng has a three-year-old daughter and another baby on the way. She

said her daughter has enjoyed the BoredBox at home and on lengthy plane rides.

“We are hoping to provide a screenfree alternative for children.”

Cheng said she and Isaac ensured the BoredBox was made with environmental materials and a minimum of packaging because they “want to create a good example for our kids.

“We don’t want to be part of the problem, we want to be part of the solution.”

“The other thing we are passionate about is the reduction of plastic waste.

“What happens is, parents go to the dollar store to keep their kids entertained without a screen, but that creates a lot of plastic waste.

“With BoredBox, everything comes in a canister that’s printed on recycled paper.

“We are really conscious of reducing plastic waste.”

Cheng and Isaac created three prototypes of the project as they worked to perfect the final design.

The women have launched an Indiegogo campaign, which uses crowd funding to finance the project before its official launch.

Steady stream of hazardous waste flowed in on weekend

Two-day collection hosted by City, Township Clay Horan pulled up to the depot doors in his blue pickup, there to unload a few pails of unwanted old paint.

New to Langley from the Okanagan, Horan said he had participated in similar events in past in Kelowna, but just learned from his local newspaper that a drop-off event was being held here in town.

Horan is like many other residents who have items lurking in their basements or backyard sheds that are no longer needed. But many people are unsure of where to safely dispose of them, said Township of Langley solid waste coordinator Debbie Fleming.

That’s the motivation behind this 18th annual collection event, Fleming said, directing traffic through the yard Sunday. She took a second away from the lineups to note that Saturday was the busiest she’s ever seen, with vehicles lined up out the gates of the Township’s works yard, and

She noted lineups were a little shorter Sunday, but hundreds were still expected that day alone.

Last year, they collected more than 40 tonnes of hazardous materials — everything from bleach, and brake fluid to fire extinguishers, paints, antifreeze, and more.

Langley teen directs youth music society Fifteen-year-old Kitty Liu founded the West Coast Youth Music Society after she enjoyed performing for seniors.

A Langley teen keeps busy by doing ordinary teenage things—studying for class and practising her favourite instrument.

But Kitty Liu, a 15-year-old who attends R.E. Mountain Secondary, has taken on a bit more responsibility than the average high school student.

Liu is the founder and director of a non-profit organization called the West Coast Youth Music Society (WCYMS).

“I wanted to spread the joy of music to other people, so that’s why I started this organization,” said Liu. Liu founded the society in October 2017 after she first performed at a seniors centre.

“I still remember the joy that lit up on the seniors’ faces after hearing us play and that was when I realized how simple it was to bring happiness to others through music.”

The WCYMS is a non-profit group that is open to young musicians age six to 17 who want to perform at public facilities across the Lower Mainland.

Liu co-ordinates concert dates with various community organizations, such as seniors centres. Members of the WCYMS can sign up for the shows they are interested in performing.

The WCYMS has grown from 10 members in 2017, to approximately 80 performers today.

Liu is always looking for new musicians.

“We are constantly recruiting more people. Not only is this a good opportunity to spread music to other

people, but it’s also a good opportunity for the kids in the organization to have performance opportunities.

It aids their music learning when they are able to play for other people.”

Anyone who takes music lessons and wants to perform can join the WCYMS. Each concert usually consists of 15 performers, who are allotted one or

two pieces to play.

Liu started playing piano when she was eight years old. It took her only four years to finish the Royal Conservatory of Music’s highest level of exams.

“It became one of my favourite things ever. Even now, whenever I feel stressed or anxious, I always turn to music and it helps me a lot. I like

how you’re able to really express your emotions and connect to the audience through music. Music is a universal language so you can connect with so many people via performing and playing.”

Signing up for a performance is a good way to motive yourself to practise, according to Liu. “Whenever there’s a performance coming up, people are generally more motivated to practise because there’s the pressure of bringing your music to others and you want to let others enjoy your music more. Playing on stage and practising at home are different because once you’re on stage, more people are listening so you’re more mindful of each note and how you play it.”

And for those who may suffer stage fright, Liu offers some advice.

Kitty Liu “Treat this as a learning opportunity rather than something that’s really scary. Treat it as a chance to express your music and to learn.

“It’s OK if you make mistakes. Everyone has a first time and everyone makes mistakes once in a while. Just focus on your music instead of thinking how other people judge you.”

Arts council’s Incognito show ‘bigger than before’

Artists will be making sporadic reveals during the Incognito art show in the Township.

Incognito, the Langley Arts Council’s annual fundraising exhibition, will showcase work by local artists from Oct. 24 to Jan. 7.

The twist to the show is that each artist remains anonymous until their work is purchased.

Langley Arts Council office manager Amy Dyck said this year’s show is bigger than it’s ever been before.

“We have food and wine. It’s a great chance

for people to get cheaper work before Christmas for gifts.”

Both the artists and the Langley Arts Council benefit from the art show, as each piece is sold for $100 and proceeds are divided equally between the artist and the council.

All the pieces are 10”x 10”.

Money raised for the arts council through the event goes to support artists in Langley, by allowing the council to put on programs, shows and concerts.

Arty Party on tap in Fort An ‘Arty Party’ comes to Fort Langley this weekend, as the Fort Gallery’s primary fundraising event.

Proceeds from ticket sales for the Saturday, event will go to help support the Fort Gallery’s artist activities throughout the year, explained gallery artist and member Edith Krause.

“It’s an artist run gallery. The mandate of the gallery is to provide a venue for contemporary art. It’s not a commercial gallery. Occasionally we sell things, but that’s not our primary objective,” she said.

The Arty Party features a live jazz performance by the Lava Lights, dancing, an appetizer and dessert buffet, arty adventures and a silent auction of original art.

The Fort Gallery is important to Langley because the community lacks an established art centre, Krause said.

“Langley really doesn’t have much. We don’t really have an arts centre.”

At the Fort Gallery, Krause said contemporary artists are given the space to initiate ‘conversation’ about their artwork.

“The thing that sets contemporary art apart from decorative art is that the objective is to get conversations going about something, to raise issues, to get people to see something in a new way, to think about things in a new way,” said Krause.

Krause said her favourite aspect of contemporary art is that it ‘engages people in conversation.’

“The great thing about art is that because it’s not words, it tends to be much more open-ended so there’s a lot more left to the viewer in terms of interpretation and they might see things in a new light. Sometimes those conversations that come out of hearing other peoples’ perspective can be very enlightening and broaden our perspective.”

The Arty Party is on Nov. 3 at the Fort Langley Community Hall, 9167 Glover Rd., and runs from 7 to 11 p.m.

Businesses and non-profits lauded at 22nd annual Chamber of Commerce awards

Otter Coop is a $223-million cooperative that has been in Langley coming up on a hundred years, and the business was among 11 specifically recognized last night for its outstanding contribution to this community.

The company was crowned Langley’s best large business of the year Thursday night before a crowd of 300 who gathered at the Cascades Casino to be part of the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce 22nd annual Business Excellence Awards.

There were 95 nominees in the 11 different categories this year, explained chamber executive director Colleen Clark.

Otter Co-op was among them with 18-year staffer Mike Wills accepting the award on the company’s behalf.

“We’re truly humbled and honoured to accept this

And although Otter Co-op has been operating in Langley for 96 years, co-emcee and JRfm radio morning host Karen Daniels couldn’t resist a dig at Nicholson, saying that he only looks 95 years old. She also put a call out – verging on plea – for the co-op to expand into Vancouver.

Forty years ago, Nick Nuraney and his family ventured out to rural Langley to check out the popular A&W drive-in as a possible business opportunity, little did Nick know that all these years later he’d own nine restaurants in the Lower Mainland – six in Langley – and be recognized by the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce as the community’s outstanding business person of the year.

“It feels a little overwhelming,” Nuraney told Black Press just moments after being presented the award during the chamber’s 22nd annual Business Excellence celebrations.

“I think my heart is beating like crazy.

“It was an honour to be nominated and then when I won, I just couldn’t believe that I won.”

The chamber has been recognizing an outstanding local business person for 29 years (since 1989), “when it was first presented to George Preston of Preston Chev Olds Cadillac in the backseat of a Chevy Cav-

alier in the WalMart parking lot. I made up that last part,” said the event’s other co-emcee and JRfm morning host Clay St. Thomas – explaining some history of the award.

“George truly was the epitome of a community leader, contributor and successful business operator.

“So in the honour of the spirit of George Preston, and the example he set for new business people, his dedication to the community, and his outstanding business ethics, the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce named the award in his memory.”

Langley player makes Whitecaps debut Simon Colyn is the second-youngest player to make an MLS appearance for the club DAN FERGUSON Times Reporter

Langley’s Simon Colyn became the second-youngest player ever to make a Major League Soccer (MLS) appearance for Whitecaps FC on Sunday.

The 16-year-old’s debut came at the same time that superstar Alphonso Davies, another player who started young, made his final appearance.

Davies, who is the youngest player to play first-team for the ’Caps, bid Vancouver goodbye in style, scoring twice in his farewell match as Whitecaps FC defeated Portland Timbers 2-1 in their 2018 MLS regular season finale.

When Davies came off the BC Place pitch in the 86th minute, he was replaced by Colyn, who was making his first-team debut.

Colyn’s parents and one of his brothers were there to see his debut.

“It was exciting to get out there,” Colyn said during a post-game video interview posted to the Whitecaps website.

Going in, he said he thought he was going to be on the bench, but

A forward/midfielder, Colyn previously played with Surrey United SC in the EA SPORTS BC Soccer Premier League before joining Whitecaps FC Residency in August 2016.

Colyn was 14 when he made his Canadian youth program debut in 2017 at the U-15 identification camp under coach Rob Gale.

Colyn joined the first team in April 2018, becoming then the 15th youngest player in league history to sign an MLS contract.

Kyle Clarot named B.C.’s top defensive back Kyle Clarot of the Langley Rams is one of the British Columbia Football Conference 2018 Major Award Winners (BCFC).

Clarot was named top defensive back after he recorded 36 tackles, one sack, four interceptions and nine passes batted down.

In his first season with the Langley Rams, Clarot earned defensive all-star honours, the lone member of the Rams selected.

He also won BC Junior Football Conference’s rookie of the year award last year.

At the time, Rams interim head coach Jeff Alamolhoda described Clarot as “a leader for our defence.”

When the Rams recruited Clarot from the Langley Stampeders midget football team, they knew he could be a difference maker.

“His intangibles surprised us — his work ethic, his toughness, his physicality — and he imposed those right away,” Alamolhoda said.

Alamolhoda mentioned a defensive meeting when the coaching staff asked each player why they played the game.

“Kyle’s reason stood out a little bit, it was different,” Alamolhoda explained.

“He said the game of football gave him a rush and it was exciting and exhilarating for him.

“And he plays like that, with that energy and

that effort.”

Clarot played soccer, basketball and ball hockey as well, growing up, but loved the physicality of football.

When the Rams recruited Clarot, they envisioned him specifically for the halfback position.

He had primarily played corner before that.

“He is a prototypical Canadian defensive

back,” Alamolhoda said.

“If he continues to build on his off-season training and development as an athlete … he has the ability in my opinion to play at any level in Canada.”

For his part, Clarot would love to play professionally down the road.

He knows that he needs to work on his strength — he is six-foot-two and 165 pounds — but what he may lack in that department, he more than makes up for with his cerebral understanding on the field.

“For Kyle, the sky is the limit,” Alamolhoda said.

Langley’s Jouen Chang takes junior girls title at B.C. Championships Trinity Western University’s Jouen Chang won the junior girls title at the BC Championships at Clearbrook Park in Abbotsford Saturday afternoon (Oct. 27).

With her win, the Langley runner will now have a chance to represent B.C. at the Canadian Championships Nov. 24.

Chang finished the six-km circuit in 20:26 to top the field, while teammate Kayla Weltzin, also from Langley, was sixth in the junior race, finishing in 24:16.

“I think we had some positive results today,” said David Jackson, TWU assistant coach, cross country and middle distance.

“It was great to see Jouen win the junior girls championship. I think everyone is looking forward to this next two weeks to ease off and get ready for the U SPORTS championships.”

Among the Spartans senior women’s runners, Jennifer Shannon was TWU’s top finisher in 28:17 over eight kilometres. Joanna Williams was only 11 seconds behind Shannon, crossing in 28:28 for a 26th-place finish.

It turned out to be enough time to create a gold medal-winning performance that saw the 15-year-old Japanese exchange student, who attends Brookswood Secondary, take first out of 25 skaters in

Woodely said it was possible because Okura arrived at the club with impressive skills, and choreographer Karen Deslauriers was able to create a routine that showcased the skater’s “smooth,” graceful style.

People can get very attached to their pets and sometimes even come to treat them as part of the family. this emotional attachment can make things difficult if, say, a couple splits up and each partner wants to keep their beloved dog or cat. A recent case offers an interesting twist on the way courts normally deal with such a dispute.

Alexa walked starlight a few times after the split, and in 2016 got her landlord’s permission to keep pets. she then went to court asking for possession of 3-year old starlight or, alternatively, for a week-on/week-off sharing arrangement. Failing that, her least preferred option was to get her half of starlight’s price, $475, from Brett. Brett wanted to keep starlight and said the $2,500 he’d paid Alexa covered starlight’s cost.

While living together, they arranged through a friend to adopt a south Korean rescue dog, starlight, for $950. they both looked after starlight and shared her expenses while living together. When their relationship ended in 2015, Alexa moved into an apartment that prohibited pets and Brett kept starlight. He also paid Alexa $2,500 to settle some matters between them.

How can I Vote?

Like other courts, the BC Provincial Court acknowledged that the emotional bond human owners form with their pets can make them think of Fido and Fluffy almost like children.

But legally, animals are personal property and won’t be treated the

same way as children, said the court.

For married or common-law couples who separate, the rules dealing with the division of assets apply to pets, rather than those involving children. so the court won’t typically entertain or order joint ownership or custody arrangements for pets. rather, the issue boils down to – who has the better property claim? For example, was the pet a gift to one partner, did one partner own and bring the pet into the relationship, who paid for or mostly looked after the pet and other relevant factors. in this case though, Alexa and Brett weren’t married or common-law partners. so their adoption of starlight was legally a bit like the two of them undertaking a joint venture or partnership. But dividing starlight in two when the venture ended wasn’t practical of course, and the law doesn’t support joint ownership or possession of pets post-split. Quite apart from that, any such sharing arrangement wouldn’t be good for starlight anyway, said the court.

By the time of the court hearing in the spring of 2017, Alexa hadn’t seen starlight since at least June, 2016, and starlight had formed a strong bond with Brett. the court decided Brett should keep starlight. But Brett had to pay Alexa $475, as it wasn’t clear that his $2,500 payment to Alexa included her share of starlight’s initial purchase price.

Hint: to avoid disappointment, you might want to agree on a sharing arrangement for your pet when working out your separation details.

She was predeceased by her husband George, son-in-law Ron, and brothers George and Harry. She is survived by daughter Darlene and son Steve (Elaine), 5 grandchildren Charlene (Scott), Jamie (Serena), Jesse (Kirsten), Ryan, Brent (Leighla), 6 great-grandchildren Riley, Brooklyn, Tyler, Kali, Ethan and Summer. Her sister Blanche, brother Barry and sister-in-law Laura and many nieces and nephews.

Sis lived a very social and active life she was an avid golfer and bowler and loved spending time with family and friends. She will be sadly missed and forever in our hearts.
