First-degree murder charge laid in 2017 shooting death Thursday, the day after police search Country Woods Drive
Manhunt for ‘extremely violent’ suspect Alex Browne Staff reporter
The RCMP Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has confirmed that police activity in the 2700-block of Country Woods Drive last week was part of an ongoing IHIT investigation. The following afternoon, IHIT issued a plea for public assistance in locating Brandon Teixeira and arresting murder suspect Brandon Nathan Teixeira, 27, who they said is public warning “believed to be extremely violent and
poses a significant risk to public safety.” IHIT spokesperson Cpl. Frank Jang described last Wednesday’s incident as a “very fast-paced, dynamic situation that involved quite a few officers.” “We were trying to make an arrest, but it was unsuccessful. We are still out trying to apprehend Mr. Teixeira, and we’re hoping that the public can help us.” Residents reported the heavy police presence to media Wednesday evening, and described K9 officers searching
properties. Surrey RCMP originally told Global News that the police activity was likely police dog training, but retracted that information the following day. Jang told Peace Arch News Monday that at no time was Teixeira in police custody. Teixeira was charged Thursday with first-degree murder in the death of Nicholas Khabra as a result of a shooting on Crescent Road last October. Teixeira is described as Caucasian, fivefoot-10 and weighing 161 pounds. He
has brown hair and brown eyes, a snake tattoo on the left side of his chest and a sleeve tattoo on his left arm. Jang warned the public not to approach him, but to call 911 immediately after any sighting. The shooting of Khabra took place in the early morning hours of Oct. 23, 2017. Surrey RCMP responded to a report of shots fired in the 14300-block of Crescent Road at 2:10 a.m. Continued on A4
‘Outraged’ residents rally
‘Astonishing that some bonehead with a saw can cut down eagle nest’ Aaron Hinks Staff reporter
About 50 ‘eagles’ flocked to the corner of Croydon Drive and 20 Avenue Sunday to demonstrate “outrage” after an eagle tree was vandalized in July. Organized by the Hancock Wildlife Foundation, attendees wore paper eagle masks as local biologist David Hancock gave a presentation then led a tour to the nest. The cottonwood, which is approximately 60 years old, had to be removed by city contractors after someone partially cut through the tree this summer. “Enough is enough,” Hancock said to the crowd, adding that he’s watched more than 50 eagle trees cut down in the last number of years. “There is a law, it is the British Columbia Wildlife Act. And it says Continued on A4 Residents gathered near Croydon Drive and 20 Avenue Sunday to draw attention to an eagle’s nest that was destroyed when a tree was unlawfully cut.
