Langley Memorial Hospital’s emergency department saw about 47,500 patients in 2017 and more than 46,000 people the year before.

And the numbers will only continue to grow as the population of the community grows.

A year ago the B.C. Liberal government announced an ER expansion, and despite the change of government to NDP control, the expansion is going ahead with construction expected to start this fall.

“The redeveloped site will mean even better patient-centred care for all those who visit Langley Memorial Hospital,” said Tasleem Juma, the Fraser Health spokesperson.

The $30-million project will see the number of treatment spaces rise from the current 31 to 49. There will be a separate children’s waiting area.

Separate entrances will be created for walk-in patients and ambulance arrivals, and the number of trauma bays will increase from one to two.

Designs have been created for the Langley Memorial Hospital emergency department expansion.

A secure and separate treatment area will be added for people with mental health and substance use issues so they can be treated in private.

The B.C. government is funding $20.06 million of the project while the remaining $10 million will come from the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation.

The foundation has been working to line up significant donations, and will launch a campaign once the majority of the funds are pledged – a typical format for fundraising on major projects.

The foundation’s campaign will be aimed at making it through the home stretch of its funding commitment. That’s likely going to be around the time of the groundbreaking and construction start.

The foundation has been involved in the planning process with Fraser Health, and there are concept drawings of the ER based on finding the most efficient design and layout.

“The clinical planning team went to Surrey. They went to Nanaimo, and they went to Lions Gate, and a couple of other sites and really looked at what kind of care delivery model was working and what would work in our emergency,” said Kate Ludlam, donor relations coordinator for the foundation.

They visited facilities that have had emergency department changes in recent years.

“I think that what you are going to see is a department that looks very different,” she noted.

When shovels hit the ground

and the heavy equipment moves in, Langley Memorial will still be where people can go for health care.

“The emergency department will remain fully operational during construction, and plans are in place to ensure the safety and well-being of patients and staff,” Juma noted.

The construction alone is expected to generate approximately 113 direct jobs and 69 jobs in supplier industries for a total of 182 jobs.

Fraser Health hasn’t said what the staffing implications will be for the expanded emergency department.

“As part of our planning for the expansion project, we will be looking at staffing requirements and ensuring appropriate staff is available,” Juma said.

DRIVING

Brief gas price war had drivers sitting in lines in Langley

The cheapest gas in Metro Vancouver was in Langley for a few days.

Super Save Gas, at 56th Avenue and the Langley Bypass, had cars lined up around the corner and backing up onto the bypass last Thursday to buy gas at

$1.19 a litre.

Several other gas stations within a kilometre lowered their prices as well, with some stations on the bypass and Fraser Highway selling gas for about $1.23 per litre.

Langley than in lower-taxed Abbotsford.

As of Wednesday, March 7, some gas prices were still as low as $1.35 around Langley – but other stations had raised their prices all the way up to $1.50 per litre.

Langley residents and police are teaming up to help create local safe spaces for LGBTQ residents.

Local parents Stacey Wakelin and Brad Dirks are pushing for the Safe Place program to be implemented in Langley, and they’re already finding a receptive audience with local RCMP. If widely adopted, Safe Place would mean local businesses and civic facilities could put up a rainbow decal on their doors or windows.

Any LGBTQ person would know that building is a safe location if they are feeling threatened, harassed, or bullied.

hey say March comes in like a lion, and goes out like a lamb.

The weather here is certainly living up to the “lion” part of the equation so far.

The other day, I headed out for an early dinner with family.

It was lightly raining as we pulled out of the driveway, began sleeting within two minutes, which turned to heavy hail that turned the road into a slushy river.

The sun was out again by the time we got to the restaurant.

On the other hand, whether March actually goes out like a lamb is debatable. Maybe it’s more of an ornery billy goat that’s decided to give us a good kicking.

here is a great deal of confusion in society right now about how to deal with the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements.

International Women’s Day, which is today (March 8) seems a good time to look at where things stand.

Allegations are swirling around many prominent and not-so-prominent men.

People have lost their jobs or social standing.

Some are being investigated for criminal activity related to victims’ revelations.

There will be countless criminal and civil court cases by victims empower by #MeToo and #TimesUp. In short, this is about women and hopefully men who care about respect and dignity, standing up and saying they disagree with a whole lot of things that have just been considered part of everyday life in the past.

They are objecting to a spectrum of behaviours that range in severity from verbal abuse right up to sexual assault and murder.

These behaviours all come down to an attempt to diminish a person based on gender.

Not sure how to act in this new era?

There’s an easy litmus test.

Think of the person you respect most in the world – be it a loved one or celebrity.

If that person was in the room with you, would you still make that same sexist comment or vulgar gesture or social media posting or unwanted sexual advance?

As for those who resent having to change their language or actions so that other around them are not made uncomfortable or humiliated, buck up, snowflake.

You’ll get used to it.

Women have a head start by several thousand years. Ask them how.

Township writer envies City vibe

Dear Editor, Wow, what a contrast between Langley City council meetings and Township of Langley council meetings.

Last night (March 5) my wife and I attended a Langley City council meeting, instead of our area’s council meeting just to change things up.

The City meeting sure was a breath of fresh air.

The mayor and councillors came into the chambers all smiles, upbeat, and in good moods. They acknowledged the people in the chambers with eye contact, smiles, and a friendly head nod.

The meeting had three issues on the agenda open for a public hearing, short presentations on the issues were followed by a couple of comments and generally everyone seemed okay with the new condos about to be built.

Mayor Ted Schaffer kept the room in good spirits with words of praise for the de-

veloper, and small tasteful humour for the 20 or so in attendance.

Three public hearings, roughly three or four presentations by staff and others, and bam, the meeting was over in less than an hour and a half.

It was a nice, tasteful council meeting that left us with positive thoughts about how Langley City seems to be doing things right in a meeting.

Now rewind to the dark and gloomy, often downright-mean-and-negative council meetings that take place in the Township of Langley (TOL) chambers led

by Mayor [Jack] Froese.

The TOL meetings often have a lot of arguing between our elected officials, and most of the time an air of bullying can be felt coming from a good majority of people situated in on council.

I have often seen and heard councillors scowl, groan, talk

down, and talk over other people on council who are just trying to do the job the people elected them for.

It is my opinion that a handful of people on council even get together before a meeting and discuss how a vote will go one way or another.

The TOL meetings make people feel that something else is really going on, it makes people wonder where the transparency, trust, and ethics have gone.

I feel watching a TOL meeting just depresses a lot of people because they feel what they say mostly falls on deaf ears.

I am also a believer that both the City and the TOL should have their meetings on opposite Mondays, that way the great people of Langley can witness the contrast between the two, and see the good, the bad, in the case of the TOL, the ugly.

Dear Editor, I am so tired of listening to the ramblings from our volunteers, politicians and religious groups when it comes to the introduction of MAiD [medical assistance in dying] into hospice, etc.

They all present their own selfish points of view.

“Not in my backyard!”

I have not seen the part where they say I am here for the patient and their “quality of life.”

If they think they are helping those people that are suffering unnecessarily, that choose to request assistance in shortening their lifespan that will offer both “quality of life and dignity in death,” they are terribly wrong.

If the hospice’s mandate does not include MAiD, then it is time for the boards to sit down and revise their mandate.

I do not see how anyone, workers or volunteers can sit back and watch a person near end of life that is suffering and is constant pain that chooses to end their life earlier, can suggest they are helping by making these people suffer needlessly.

You have no right to impose your own personal views.

Personally, I can think of no better place than hospice to accommodate MAiD, now and into the future.

Artists rally to help homeless students An Alberta painter returns home for an art event benefiting struggling youth.

Langley artist Brian Croft is added a new, third sale to the already popular West Fine Art Show events. This one rusn Friday to Sunday at Yorkson Creek Elementary.

An artist who grew up here, has shown his paintings in the Louvre, as well as in Cannes, Rio de Janario, Florence, New York City, and Monaco is now back in Langley and adding his talents to the new West Fine Art Show happening this weekend in aid of homeless youth.

Brian Croft, organizer of a trilogy of West Fine Art Shows, was proud to share the news that Jim Pescott has been added as an unexpected but welcome 23rd artist in the show’s line up.

“He’s setting up right now in BMO Centre in Calgary for a show…”

Croft told the Langley Advance.

“But he is pretty pumped that he is coming home to show his work, and so am I,” Croft added just ahead of this weekend’s art show, happening Friday through Sunday, March

9 to 11, at Yorkson Creek Middle School.

While the West Fine Art Show has been around for many years – initially started by Langley artist Murray Phillips – Croft took over the reigns last year.

And last fall, Croft first divulged his intent to add a third annual art show to the repertoire. He’s making that a reality this weekend – with some help from his new friends at the Langley School District Foundation.

“Up to now we have always done two annual shows; I felt we could do one more,” Croft said.

“At all our shows, a portion of all art sales are directed to the partnered charity, in this case the Langley School District

Foundation,” he elaborated.

After considering a range of school foundation initiatives, the art show society asked that the funds raised from the upcoming show be directed “to helping with youth homelessness, as we felt this was a pressing need within our community,” Croft said.

This new partnership has the foundation’s executive director Susan Cairns pretty excited.

This is the first time the foundation has partnered with the arts community on a major fundraiser, and Cairns is optimistic it can become an annual affair.

The cause, she said, is significant. There are at least 170 students in the

school district who are identified as homeless.

Working closely with Encompass and a few other community resources, Cairns said they’re hoping to guide several students in need through the new shelter and resource hub set to open on 203rd Street in the middle of this month.

Depending on how many pieces of art sell, Cairns has been told this inaugural show and sale could raise as much as $10,000 for the cause.

The charity art show kicks off at Yorkson, 20686 84th Ave., on Friday, from 7 to 9 p.m., continues Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission and parking are free.

Horse bazaar growing into popular family event The serious horse rider, the weekend novice, the uninterested sibling of riders, the person with no connection to horses at all – they can all find fun at the Horseman’s Bazaar and Country Fair this Sunday.

Organized by Lower Mainland Quarter Horse Association, the bazaar has grown to feature pretty much everything the equestrian needs or could want, plus activities for all ages.

In addition to the used tack sale, there’s specialty clinics with experts, horse and dog demonstra-

tions throughout the day, community groups and vendors on site, a kids zone including Elsa and Ariel, magicians, entertainers and dancers, farm animals, and more.

Admission is $5 per person and free for children five and younger.

The hunt is on again for exceptional youth in Langley.

This search shouldn’t be too difficult, according to George Bryce, a key organizers for this year’s SASSY Awards.

Nominations close at midnight this coming Friday, March 9. And while there are only eight applications received so far, Bryce said it’s not a worry. By the deadline, he expects that number to jump significantly.

“We know from the last two years that there will be a flood this coming week,” Bryce told the Langley Advance, one of the co-sponsors of the annual Service Above Self Student Youth (SASSY) Awards.

“Last year we received 42 nominations, and we’re optimistic that we will receive more than 60 this year.”

For the third year running, Langley Rotary Clubs are joining forces to host the SASSYs, and recognize youth who exemplify leadership in seven different categories:

The final awards presentation night, this year on May 17, typically includes entertainment by local youth. sports leadership, youth leadership, community service, leadership in arts and culture, international service, environmental leadership, and leadership beyond adversity.

In addition to receiving a stylish glass SASSY Award, each award winner in past has received a $1,000 bursary towards post-secondary education and a $500 donation to the charity of their choice, on their behalf.

This year, Rotary is upping the ante.

New this year, the two runners up in each category will

also receive $500 bursaries.

“We are excited about this, as we get to support 14 more Langley youth as they move forward,” Bryce said. “That’s 21 Langley youth to receive $14,000.”

Following Friday’s deadline, applications will be reviewed and the judging session will be held Saturday, April 28.

Then, the awards ceremony happens on Thursday, May 17, again at Chief Sepass Theatre in Fort Langley.

Transplants bring new flavour to the Fort Langley village

What’s In Store

The newest eatery in the village of Fort Langley is set to open late this week, and its owners promise it will be something a little unique and different – by local standards.

The Rustic Gourmet, which I mentioned a few weeks back, is a new bistro opening on the corner of Mavis Avenue and River Road by a pair of recent Fort Langley transplants.

Travellers at heart, Rustic owners Simone Hurwitz and Enrico (Kiko) Campani, opted to put down roots in Fort Langley 18 months back, and now they’re bringing their passion for food and European culture to the table at this new restaurant.

“It’s not going to be the place you go to get some burgers and fries,” Hurwitz explained.

It’s going to be more European-style eatery, she noted.

“We’re never going to have a very long Roxanne Hooper menu,” she said, noting that there will be a small variety of different fresh seasonal dishes based on what is available from the local farmers.

The pair operated Rustic Gourmet in White Rock for nine years as a catering company and coffee shop at the local curling club.

After months of extensive renovations on the new site – and several months of working out of a rental commercial kitchen – it’s all done. They’re ready to throw open the doors once the Township gives approval. Hurwitz is hopefully that will be later this week.

Asked repeatedly what kind of food they will serve, she replies “It’s Mediterranean food… it touches on all the places we’ve lived and visited.”

They’ll start off by serving simple lunches, coffee, and all kinds of pastries. Soon, Hurwitz hopes to expand to offering brunches and tappas. Then, as they get settled, they’ll move into dinners.

James Hill Elementary students donned baking mitts to open pill bottles, altered goggles to try and pour a glass of water, and strained to push themselves in wheelchairs.

The lesson of the day was to see a bit of what it’s like to live with a disability. The school played host to an interactive display called Try On A Disability (TOAD).

“You should think that everyone is normal even if they have a disability,” student Heena Rai summed up what the experience taught her.

About 250 students took part in the session which capped off Diversity and Inclusivity Week in the Langley School District.

“We were looking at different forms of diversity,” explained principal Chris Wejr.

by Langley Pos-Abilities Society, and while the program has been offered in past at local community events, Friday was the first time

the program was taken into a local school.

“James Hill Elementary is the first school who has invited us, and we hope that it will be the first of many,” founder Zosia Ettenberg said.

The program lets kids try on disabilities, including various forms of sight impairment, arthritis, and stroke.

“To do it everyday for the rest of your life, it would be a real chal-

lenge,” commented student Abigayle Dalgliesh.

They also had to manoeuvre a wheelchair to position themselves to try and shoot a basketball. Ettenberg explained to the students that although she required a wheelchair, she’s still active. She can be found each week at the Langley Curling Club, on the ice, playing the sport.

“We believe that if

you can understand the challenges that people face living with a disability, you can accept and include them in your circle of friends. If you start when you are young it will gradually change our community,” she said.

Pos-Abilitites is a non-profit organization started in town eight years ago to help Langley residents change disabilities into possibilities, she explained.

It’s intentions are to help local people living with disabilities by providing quality assistive devices for those who could not otherwise afford them, serve as a liaison with other organizations and programs that can help people further their independence, and focus on public education.

“We are so excited because we are hoping to be visiting all the schools in Langley with this program, as well as businesses, to work with their staff,” she said.

Big Brother rallies friends, family to bowl for kids One final charity bowl-a-thon is set for this Friday and Saturday, but more bowlers are welcome.

As a Vietnamese refugee, Tri Pham has always been grateful for the life he and his family found when coming to Canada almost four decades ago.

When he started as a Big Brother a few years back, he hoped it would be a way to give back and to show his appreciation.

“I just wanted to help out,” the Willoughby resident said, anxious to pitch in to keep kids out of gangs and on the “right track.”

“I think, if I can help just one kid, it’s worth it,” Pham said, noting he and his wife always taught their two children from a young age – now adults – that it’s everyone’s duty to give back.

But reflecting on his past three years as a Big, the 62-year-old electrical engineer admits his motivation has become more selfish.

It turns out he “loves it,” and Pham said he gets much more out of being involved as a Big and participating in the agency’s annu-

“Honestly, I do it for myself,” he said.

Pham has been a Big Brother to 13-yearold Joe Hao for three years now, getting together at least once a week to share some time and partake in their similar interests of sports, electronics, and circuitry.

He describes Joe as shy, and said it took almost a year to “break the ice” with the boy, but now they classify each other as more than just Big and Little. They are friends.

They’ve spend time playing badminton and basketball, and Pham has introduced

him to baseball and golf, ironically the pair have never bowled together.

However, Pham loves to bowl – not as much for the sport itself, but more for what bowling makes possible.

He’s referring to the Bowl for Kids Sake bowl-a-thon happening this weekend in Langley, which serves as one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for Big Brothers Big Sisters Langley.

“It’s a great cause,” said Pham, who was the event’s top individual fundraiser last year and typically raised about $2,000 annually in pledges and sponsorships.

Next Saturday, Pham will be at Willowbrook Lanes with at least 20 of his friends and family bowling and raising money for this cause that has grown dear to his heart.

Pham is fielding one of the 15 teams (of four to six people) already registered for this year’s Bowl For Kids Sake.

There’s still time to partake in the western-themed event, with the cut off for registration is today (Thursday, March 8).

The bowl-a-thon takes place Friday and Saturday. Each player must reach a minimum of $50 in pledges and register by calling 604-530-5055 or emailing admin. langley@bigbrothersbigsisters.ca.

Companion kittens needed for terminally ill grandpa cat A Langley-based feline rescue group wants to immerse Mason’s last weeks in kitten love.

An old grandfatherly cat needs kittens.

Sounds odd, indeed, but the Langley-based rescue organization Tiny Kittens has put out a plea for help.

“This is going to sound weird at first,” Tiny Kitten founder Shelly Roche said, acknowledging it’s a strange but “important” request.

She hopes someone knows of a cat owner in the area willing “to give us two or more kittens for Grandpa to love?” She even went as far as to put out a plea through social media and CraigsList more than a week ago.

Grandpa Mason is an ancient, battle-scarred feral cat with terminal kidney disease, who is in need of kittens, Roche explained.

He was rescued in 2016 by Tiny Kittens, and instead of euthanasia, they hoped to make him comfortable and free of pain in what they call his “sunset months.”

What happened next completely melted hearts.

He’s adjusted remarkably well to life indoors, although he’s still is not a big fan of humans.

Grandpa Mason is a feral cat rescued in 2016. The terminally ill cat loves kittens, so rescue organizers are hunting for kittens in need of love. They want to make him happy for the final weeks or months of his life.

Mason has raised several litters now, and is “happiest when he is covered in a pile of purring kittens.”

His story has been told on social media, and one of his transformation videos has received in excess of five million views.

Lilo Lilo is a 6.5 year old Japanese Chin who came to us after her owner had passed away. While she can be nervous around new people, this sweet girl is beginning to make friends with all the staff and volunteers and show how sweet and loving she really is! Lilo looks like she could potentially live with a respectful dog or cat but really young kids might be overwhelming for her.

His last litter of kittens was adopted out in January, and Tiny Kittens has been unable to find replacements for him since then.

“It is not currently kitten season here, which is actually a good thing,” Roche said. “But we just want Grandpa to live out his final months surrounded by as much love and joy as possible, so we are looking for kittens now.”

They are specific in asking that the kittens not be ill.

“Because Grandpa is old and has kidney disease, we have to be careful not to expose him to kittens who are sick, so we are looking for at least two kittens who

When Roche was listening to the video of Bean Bunny in her new home, her meows awoke Mason and he began searching the house for his ‘little babe’.

That’s when Roche realized he needed some more kittens – and sooner rather than later.

“Kittens are just starting to come into our local shelters, but they are not yet overflowing to the point where they would benefit from sending them to Grandpa,” Roche shared with the Langley Advance.

“We had offers from the southern United States, and were looking into transport options, but I know in a few weeks, we will all be flooded with kittens up here.”

Fearful, however, that a few weeks might be all Mason has, she didn’t want to wait and so put out the call for some kittens.

Star Vancouver Giants player Ty Ronning has signed a threeyear entry level contract with the NHL’s New York Rangers.

Ronning has spent the last five seasons with the Giants, racking up 121 goals and 90 assists for the Langley-based team.

But this season has been his best.

Ronning potted his 55th goal of the season against Kamloops on Friday night.

The previous record for a Giants player was 48, a high water mark set by Evander Kane in his NHL draft season in 2008/09.

The Giants are currently headed for the WHL playoffs, having clinched their spot Saturday with a home win against Kamloops.

They have five regular season games remaining, the majority of them road games.

It’s not surprising that Ty Ronning is headed to the NHL, given his family’s history.

Ty’s father Cliff Ronning is being inducted into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame later this spring.

The elder Ronning was raised in Burnaby and was a key member of the Vancouver Canucks in the early 1990s, helping the team to the 1994 Stanley Cup finals.

Ronning also played for the St. Louis Blues, the Phoenix Coyotes, Nashville Predators, LA Kings, and New York Islanders.

A total of 64 teams in four divisions converge on Langley.

Walnut Grove Secondary qualified in the 4A tourney and is 10th seed.

In 3A action, there’s the number 7 seed squad from Clayton Heights.

Eleventh seed Langley Christian is in the 2A tournament.

The 1A tournament includes number 1 seed Credo Christian.

It’s been a big week for the Vancouver Giants – the team has clinched a playoff spot, and top scorer Ty Ronning has been signed by an NHL team – but that’s no reason to rest on their laurels.

“It’s a good feeling,” said head coach Jason McKee, of the 5-4 win over the Kamloops Blazers that put the team into the WHL playoffs. “We haven’t been there in a while.”

But the team has worked hard this year, and it’s paid off with a winning record. And once they get into the playoffs, anyone can win, said McKee. That’s why they won’t be letting up – the teams that will face them over the next week will not see the Giants slacking.

“We want to be playing playoff hockey before the playoffs start,” said McKee. He’s got a list of four areas he wants his team to work on during the next string of games: offensive, defensive, and neutral zone play, and special teams.

The fact that most of the string of games will be road games doesn’t bother McKee in the slightest.

“You’ve got to be able to win on the road if you’re going to win championships,” he said.

As for worrying about injuries, that’s something that McKee feels is entirely out of his control. He can’t think about it as the regular season winds down.

“We want our guys playing hard, and playing the right way,” McKee said.

That tough play has payed off in spades for one Vancouver Giant.

Ty Ronning, son of former Canuck Cliff Ronning, is headed for the NHL after signing a three-year entry level contract with the New York Rangers.

“It’s exciting for everyone,” said McKee. “Ty’s worked real hard here for the last few years.”

New real estate numbers show condo and townhouse demand remained high in Langley during the month of February.

The price of housing in Langley continued to climb last month, with townhouses seeing the largest percentage increase month over month.

There were 82 houses, 71 townhouses, and 72 condo apartments sold in the Langleys in February, according to statistics from the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB).

The price for a typical house in Langley continues to hover above $1 million, with the average $1.113 million, and the benchmark price – the price for a “typical” home at $1.028 million. The price of an average detached home is up 28.8 per cent from a year ago.

Townhouse prices are up to $616,000 for an average home, with the benchmark price at $508,500. Average prices have increased 24.6 per cent in the last year, and jumped 8.1 per cent

month-over-month from January.

Condo prices have seen the largest annual increase in value, with a benchmark condo now selling for $424,300 and the average price at $390,574. The average price has risen 31 per cent year over year, and is up 3.3 per cent in the last month.

The number of homes listed for sale continues to be lower than in recent years, and lack of supply is affecting the local market, according to FVREB president John Barbisan.

“Attached apartment inventory in particular has struggled to keep up with the shift in demand we saw prominently throughout last year,” said Barbisan. “Without sufficient supply, it has become increasingly challenging for buyers looking to enter the market at that level.”

A building boom of condos and townhouses in Langley has not satisfied demand.

“Sold Out” signs have been appearing at construction sites in Langley long before condo projects are finished.

Langley Township clamps down on green waste contaminants Residents asked to be picky about what goes in the containers.

It only takes a bit of time and a little knowledge to properly sort organic waste into green carts, a habit that has a great impact on our health and the environment.

But when green carts are contaminated with items that don’t belong, the results are costly, said Township of Langley’s solid waste coordinator Christopher Combe.

To avoid the added expense, residents are asked to review what goes in their green bins, and to better understand what doesn’t belong.

“Green carts are only to be used for food scraps, yard trimmings, and food-soiled paper products such as napkins, paper towels, and pizza boxes,” he said.

More common contaminants are items such as plastic bags and wrap, even those sold as compostable or bio-degradable, and items like dirt, plastic containers, and other recyclables.

Garden rakes and lawnmower parts are some of the more unique contaminants that have been discovered, he shared.

“These objects certainly do not belong in green carts, which are for organic waste only,” Combe added, noting a full list of what can and can’t be placed in green bins

Sustainability meeting set The Township of Langley’s public meeting on what social sustainability will look like locally is Thursday, March 15.

And council wants public input into the Social Sustainability Strategy it is creating.

Exploring issues like housing, food security, public safety, health and wellness, arts and culture, and lifelong learning, this strategy will provide the groundwork for the Township’s actions on social issues over the next decade.

Panelists will share insights on what it takes to create a vibrant and inclusive community.

The meeting runs 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Langley Events Centre banquet room, 7888 200th St. can be found at tol.ca/ greencart.

Residents can use their blue boxes to recycle material like

plastic containers, and bring styrofoam and plastic bags to local recycling depots.

“By placing organics in green carts we help save space in landfills and reduce the effects of harmful greenhouse gasses that are produced when organics rot in a landfill,” Combe explained.

Organics have been banned from transfer stations, and Township residents are required by a municipal bylaw to separate them from their garbage.

When collecting green cart waste, crews check for visible contamination and will tag carts and leave unacceptable loads behind for residents to remove contaminants.

However, they only get a snapshot of what is in the carts, and even tiny objects such as stickers from fruits and vegetables are a form of contamination.

Not only is contamination harmful to the environment, it hits Township residents in the pocketbook, as the composting facility charges the municipality a higher rate when it must remove unacceptable material from the organics.
