The 2017 Business Excellence Awards were celebrated in style on January 19 as Mission’s business community gathered together at The Clarke Theatre to honour their own. Presented by the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce, the awards celebrate high achievement in a variety of categories.

President’s Award Winner 2017 GORDON RULEY

The Board of Directors of the Mission Regional Chamber are proud to present this award to Gordon Ruley, a true champion of the Mission Business Community. Gordon Ruley was raised in Mission, and prior to attaining his university education, was a realtor with Block Bros. Realty, in Mission, for three years. Ruley then attended Simon Fraser University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in 1980, and the law faculty at the University of British Columbia, obtaining his law degree in 1982. Ruley has been a partner of Taylor Tait Ruley and Company since 1983, specializing in Real Estate, Land Development, Corporate and Business Law, Wills, Estates and Estate Planning. Aside from his professional duties and experience, Ruley has volunteered his services in the community, serving in such capacities as: • Chairman of the Expo 86 Committee • Founding Member of the Mission Foundation • Director, Mission Chamber of Commerce • Chairman, Mission Home and Leisure Show Committee • Honourary Member, Mission Rotary Club • Chairman, Mission Rotary Fund Raising Committee for 17 years • Team sponsor and coach, Mission Minor Softball Association Gordon Ruley was instrumental in the launch of the annual Rockin’ River Music Festival in Mission.

He had a major role in the Canadian Cancer Society’s Poinsettia Fundraiser in Mission to help Cancer Research and also provide funding to support the Mission Driver’s Program for getting patients to and from the cancer clinic for treatment. Ruley was a committee member and major fundraiser for the 2014 Mission Hospice Gala fundraiser event. He tirelessly got sponsorships, provided auction items, sold tickets, and rolled up his sleeves to help the executive director, the committee and the hospice staff volunteers with doing what was needed to help make this worthwhile cause a great success. The event raised over $50,000. Ruley was a committee member, key adviser and major fundraiser for the Mission Association for Community Living Summer Fundraising Gala on June 14, 2014 here in Mission. MACL supports children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities. The organization offers life skills development, residential care, employment preparation and care to children up to the age of 19 who require extra support. He participated and contributed to helping serve meals to the homeless with fellow Rotarians. Gordon was the legal services chair for the 2014 BC Winter Games in Mission. He is the father of six children and a proud grandfather of eight grandchildren. He has been active in minor sports and with seniors groups throughout his career. As a Rotarian, Ruley epitomizes the Rotary Test of Service Before Self.
