Parade Entertainment - Best line up ever By Leah Blain CONTRIBUTOR
This year, in honor of Canada 150 and the Fair’s 120th anniversary, the Salmon Arm Fair will be offering the best line up of entertainment yet. “We are really showcasing great BC talent,” says Lori Risling. “We have the most variety we’ve ever had and we’re showcasing the most award-winning artists we’ve ever had.” New to the Main Stage is Dirt Road Opera. This incredible trio consists of Barry Mathers, Rachel Mat-
kin and Jim Ryan, all highly talented musicians. Mathers and Ryan, as members of the Cruzeros, enjoyed Canadian and international success, touring BC, Mexico and Europe. They have received several BC Country Music Association Awards. Rachel Matkin started her career singing in her family band. At the age of 14 she won the BCCMA Junior Vocalist competition. She went on to have a successful solo career in Canada and her album, Living Beyond Our Dreams, was voted
Fairgrounds
Album of the Year at the BCCMA’s. “These three talents have a unique style of folk-roots music,” says Risling. “You will love their eclectic mix of music and wonderful harmonies.” And Salmon Arm’s Jesse Mast will be playing Friday night. He was a Shuswap Idol first place winner, as well as the People’s Choice winner when he was 15 years old. Now he is signed by Sony Music Canada and he has toured with Gord Bamford. Always a favorite at the Salmon Arm Fair is Adam Fitzpatrick with his tribute to Elvis Presley. Fitzpatrick is an international, multiaward winning Elvis Presley Tribute Artist. Fitzpatrick portrays Elvis with his high energy moves of the 50’s as well as his dynamic intensity (and black leather suit!) of the 60’s. This will be capped with the famous jumpsuit and Elvis’ charisma of the 70’s! “Adam is in high demand and his shows constantly sell out so Salmon Arm is extremely fortunate to have him perform at our fair once again,” says Risling. Another returning act and longtime favorite is Dale Seaman and Highway 97. Seaman

was the winner of the Okanagan Star Search in 2005 and has performed at the Merritt Mountain Music Festival. His vocal versatility will have you enjoying a great variety of country music. Joining Seaman is Betty Anne Northup and Lawrence Bourgeois. Northup’s solid vocals and keyboard playing and Bourgeois’ vocals and superb instrumentation on guitar and fiddle are sure to get people clapping, and dancing. In addition to these acts, the Salmon Arm Fair will feature regular favorites such as dance troupes Just For Kicks and Shuswap Dance Centre. Returning for a second year is the talented musical duo of Blu & Kelly Hopkins. They draw fans in with their brand of acoustic folk and bluegrass music as well as their engaging humor and charisma. Also at the fair to
entertain are local favorites Barn Cats and Seal Scull Hammer. Interspersed throughout the weekend will be performances by previous Shuswap Idol contestants, in a segment titled ‘Shuswap Shines’.

ATTRACTIONS Definitely something to crow about! By Leah Blain CONTRIBUTOR
This year the Salmon Arm Fair is celebrating its 120th anniversary. That’s definitely ‘Something to crow about’ and that is this year’s theme. “This is a such special year with the fair being 120 and Canada 150,” says Fair Administrator Ronnalee McMahon, “It’s also the year of the rooster in the Chinese calendar.” In honor of these benchmarks, there are a few new ‘heritage’ and ‘red and white’ classes
in the various divisions as well as special Canadian-themed displays throughout the exhibits. Organizers have also added a few special events to mark this special year. “We’ve added a sip and savour tasting experience,” says McMahon. She says in the customer feedback forms from last year, this was a popular request. ‘Sip & Savour Tasting Passports’ are available at the Hideaway Liquor Store and at the Salmon Arm Fair office. A passport gets you into the special lounge area
to sample various local beer, wines, cheese, and other foods. There is only a limited supply available and once they’re gone, they’re gone. “The lounge will have a bird’s eye view of the main stage. It’s a great way for friends to get together and a way to meet new friends.” Another fun new attraction is the Rona Young Naturalists birdhouse worksop. “It’s free. You have to register, they take 15 each day for three days. It will be a great souvenir for Canada
150.” McMahon says they are excited to be bringing the Laughing Lumberjacks here on the Saturday and Sunday. “They do three hilarious performances. They will be climbing poles and demonstrating what lumberjacks do.” The SuperDogs show also promises to be a crowd favorite. “With this being such a special year - watch our new attractions,” says McMahon. “I think we should celebrate the collaborative spirit that lies at the
core of the fair, the commitment of our volunteers and sponsors.” The great entertainment, the midway, and games draw the crowds, but the heart of the fair is showcasing local food producers, the farmers who provide food that goes on our tables. “It puts the local food chain into perspective, it gets consumers interested in local food production. It promotes and celebrates our local agricultural producers and the fair has a part to play in showing their significance.”
SuperDogs are coming to the fair By Leah Blain CONTRIBUTOR
The SuperDogs having been entertaining crowds at the PNE in Vancouver and now they’re coming to the Salmon Arm Fair. “We made the decision to bring them because they will appeal to a diverse audience,” says Salmon Arm Fair Administrator Ronnalee McMahon. “It’s a unique experience. This is the only place in the interior to experience them.” Watch as they show off their crazy inventions in their own version of Dragon’s Den called The Dog House. And then it’s time for a little history lesson. Laugh and
learn as they present a Canadian Heritage Minute starring the SuperDogs live and in person. And what Canadian show would be complete without a little hockey? See them compete in a race against time for the honor of their favorite NHL teams. Cheer on your favorite team by routing for its canine fan. “They will do three 30-minute shows a day, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,” says McMahon. “It’s the most fun on four legs - that’s their words.” After the show stop at their Pat N’ Chat where you can meet the stars. “In our survey last year people said they
wanted more hands-on experience at the fair and something new. This is a way they can engage and participate - at the pat and chat.” For the past four decades the SuperDogs have entertained millions live and on television with their hugely popular, family-friendly shows. From their heartwarming feature film Daniel and the SuperDogs to their fun-packed television shows like ESPN’s SuperDogs! SuperJocks! and TSN’s Horse & SuperDog Challenge, the SuperDogs continue to break new ground and reach new heights. This is a show for the whole family. It’s fast paced, interactive,
heart warming, and hilarious. Catch them celebrating their home
and native land in this brand new show, CanaDogs.
