Working with Clients

Every Step of the Way Angela Evennett loves the diversity of a wide range of Buyers and Sellers, she’s even added a special designation to work with seniors. It takes a lot of work to change homes. Angela is wonderful. She understands very much the situation and needs of her clients and works alongside them. She provides helpful advice from her strong knowledge base but does not push the client in any direction that they don’t want to go. Our experience with her was excellent!

Contributing to a Healthy, Growing Langley

The Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation advances health in the community through the generous support of those who care. Everyone in Langley has an expectation of receiving the best possible health care when needed. They receive that care locally, at Langley Memorial Hospital (LMH), but advancements in health care would struggle to keep pace with residents needs without the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation.

have and explore new ones. If we can build a bridge between those who wish to give and those who need health care, we will.”

Vivian Smith, Executive Director of the Foundation, would put it another way. She would say the ever-improving health care offered at LMH wouldn’t be possible without the many ardent supporters of the Foundation.

Those bridges are built Vivian believes the donors of Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation are with the help of many in the lifeblood of the hospital our community. “We ask and ask and ask and they The Foundation must deal with the constant continue to give,” she says of her gratitude for the changes in health care. For example, some methods ongoing support from the community. of surgery have been gradually replaced with newer, less-invasive technologies like endoscopic surgeries. While some donors give year after year, there is always a group of new supporters ready to join those Even the approach to health care has changed, with more emphasis placed on wellness and preventative who give so abundantly and freely. Donors include measures than ever before. individuals, businesses, service clubs

“The pioneers of Langley played a significant role in the development of the Hospital in 1948, and their spirit continues today,” she says. “The philanthropic culture of Langley helping Langley is alive and well today.” Vivian explains that the Foundation is much more than Galas and Golf Tournaments. Donors each have their own unique, and often private, reasons to give and the Foundation offers various opportunities for them to do so. Programs such as Legacy Giving, In Memoriam or Tribute Giving, Monthly Giving and Grateful Patient Giving are just a few examples of the ways donors can support the Foundation.

The quality of care and the dedication of the health care team is here – it’s our role to ensure they have the best equipment to do their jobs.” – Vivian Smith

“We build connections,” she notes. “We are called on to strengthen and deepen relationships we

and other organizations.

The giving goes beyond financial gifts; many volunteer in a variety of ways. Not only do volunteers assist with special events and clerical tasks, but the Board of Directors and Legacy Giving Advisory committee are completely volunteer-run. “The hospital family contributes as well: the physicians, nurses, administration and hospital staff, they give us time, knowledge and understanding,” Vivian explains.

All of this means advancements in equipment, changes to systems and a need for new tools that cost money to bring the most-advanced health care to the community. “We want to be part of a balanced system that provides patient-centred care for people right where they live,” says Vivian. “We’re taking the same perspective now as our pioneers did in that we aren’t just looking at health care needs for today, but also those of the future.” Community support for health care in Langley benefits everyone. Better local diagnosis and treatment means shorter hospital stays, better health outcomes and a healthier community.

A Diverse Love of Fords

At Dams Ford Lincoln, two team members share their love of cars in their work and personal lives. A couple of cars were in the Dams Ford Lincoln showroom not long ago. These “babies” weren’t for sale, but were definitely being admired by customers and employees alike. Partsman Rick Backaway and salesperson Josh Pickard brought their own cars in to share the love of their unique Ford vehicles. Rick’s 2015 performance Mustang GT isn’t a stock car but is definitely ready for action. He’s participated in a number of car shows and events and has the hardware to prove his car – affectionately known as the “garage queen” – can take on the competition. “I’m like any other car guy, if anyone asks me a question, I can’t shut up about it,” says Rick. “My dad was a Ford partsman before me. He worked for Ford for 40 years. I used to work on cars with my dad, ever since I was a kid.”

Rick has now beat his dad’s tenure with Ford, having been 40 years with Ford - 30 of those as a partsman. Rick and Josh have worked together at Dams for close to 15 of those 40 years. While Rick loves his Mustang, there’s room in his garage for something else and he plans to add something older to the mix. Perhaps something along the lines of what Josh and his dad worked on or a Model T – which just happens to be next in line on Josh’s project list. Josh adds that for hot rods, Fords tend to be the most desirable. “It’s not just a job,” notes Rick. “It’s

Call on the Experts

for Your Paint Project Good paint and great service keeps customers of Benjamin Moore Langley Decorating Centre coming back to this family-run business. Earle Lee started his career with paint back in the early 80s when he spent a couple of years working for a local paint store. While he wanted to stay in the business, he knew there was more he could do. “I decided I wanted to have my own business and sell high-quality paint,” Earle said. “I like being a people person. I really like the retail aspect of talking to people, working with them and getting to know their projects – which ultimately is getting to know them.”

“When you treat people well and supply them with great paint, they will come back forever,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what the project is, it’s about giving customers the service they deserve and treating them the way we’d like to be treated.”

Staff: April, Cierra and Michele are happy to answer all your paint and decorating questions.

Earle owns the business with daughter Jaymie and son Sheldon; they also have the expertise of four other team members, each with their own knowledge of different aspects of colour, paint and paint products. “We also have designers working here,” noted Earle.

Sometimes that means a trip to Langley Decorating Centre will take a little longer than a trip to a big box store. Why? Because the team will answer all of your questions and ensure you have what you need. In fact, everything you need for your project is in the store. Earle and the family pride themselves on This is what having an excellent selection of paint service looks like. sundries.

Sheldon and Earle are experts with the industrial and commercial side of things including epoxies, coatings, indoor and outdoor applications and more. The rest of the team offers expertise in residential applications to round out the mix. “We also have wall coverings from a range of suppliers, window film, chalk paint, blinds and other window coverings,” he said. “This is what service looks like. We want to give you the best service, not just sell you a gallon of paint.” Service also includes involvement in the community. Because Earle and his family have been part of Langley for decades, they are regular supporters of the CKNW Orphans’ Fund, the Ride to Conquer Cancer and Critter Care Wildlife Society. If you need paint and want the advice that comes from people who care, Benjamin Moore – Langley Decorating Centre is the place to get it.

Reducing the Stress

of Day-to-Day Living Molly Maid of Langley makes your life better by eliminating that big “to-do” item on your list every two weeks. While growing up, Shauna Browne saw how a clean home can make life easier and less stressful – especially when a professional team takes care of the cleaning. Her parents owned Molly Maid of Langley for 30 years until she bought it and took the franchise over from her mom in 2012. Although she hasn’t been at the helm of the business as long as her mom, she certainly has the experience of working in the business throughout her life. She has witnessed the relief and joy on customers’ faces when they realized their home was in safe hands and would be clean at the end of their long day. “I went off and tried other jobs, but the values of Molly Maid brought me back,” she says. “I watched the pride my mom and dad had in serving their clients and that is the same pride I have, knowing our team does a great job in simplifying someone else’s life.”

The values Shauna emulates in her business have carried down from her parents. They start with what her team of 16 does and what she is able to give them in return: she finds fulfillment in her ability to provide a regular, stable income for those who work for her Molly Maid franchise.

Another value Shauna and her team share is the sense of gratification knowing they give

Molly Maid ensures the job is done right the first time and every time whether it’s a light cleaning of bathrooms and high-traffic areas or all the way up to a full spring-cleaning. Shauna strives to deliver a premium service to her clients where the quality of the work is obvious.

“We send a team of two uniformed cleaners to each job in a branded car,” she says. “You know who we are when we arrive and our supervisor, Amanda, regularly checks the cleaning job to ensure it is up to Molly Maid standards which means going into corners and under furniture .

“We all have to do our part to keep the environment healthy,” she notes. Every team member is bonded and insured then trained in-house before they become the third member of a two-member cleaning team doing onsite training. They each learn what Shauna refers to as the cleaning routine of top to bottom and left to right. She ensures her team is focused on quality first and foremost. Setting the Bar in Eyecare

Now in a new location, LensRUs raises the bar on how optical stores should be. For those who wear them, glasses are far more than an accessory. They are a statement of the person as much as a tool that enables them to see the world clearly. Fashion-Forward Livable Furniture

ScanDesigns and Muse & Merchant are ready to turn you on to a wide range of stylish, fashionable, longlasting furniture. From modern, contemporary, stylish to traditional, industrial, comfort, ScanDesigns and Muse & Merchant have the furniture for your home. About 40 years ago, Owner Gert Knudsen had been working in the furniture industry when he realized he could do just as good a job, or better, on his own. ScanDesigns was born in 1976 in 3,000 square feet of retail space. As the company grew, a new store came to Langley in 2000 with 23,000 square feet of retail space. It’s quite a change from Gert’s earlier days. There are now six Scan Design locations, four Muse & Merchant stores and a distribution centre to keep the furniture customers want accessible. While the styles, fabrics and trends of the furniture have changed from the first location, Gert’s philosophy hasn’t. “We’re proud when our customers purchase something they love. We know they will have it for a long time,” he says. “They are unique products that are different from anywhere else and we offer them at great prices.” ScanDesigns and Muse & Merchant offer pieces for just about every room in your home. Couches, tables, stools, beds, even accessory pieces to tie it all in together. Those looking for an entire house full of furniture can assemble the mix that fits them best by exploring the showroom. If an item is the right fit, but the wrong fabric or colour, chances are what you’re looking for will be available at the distribution

Gert developed ScanDesigns to be a source for high-quality, stylish furniture at affordable

prices. “With many years of experience, we’ve come to know what some of our customers will want,” Gert says. “But it can be challenging to know which items will move the quickest.”

Products in Muse & Merchant seem to be riding that fast-selling wave. Even those who may regularly shop in ScanDesigns pop into Muse & Merchant and pick up a piece here or there. Seeing those customers come back makes Gert feel proud.

Langley’s hands-on MLA Having served Langley for more than 20 years, Rich Coleman continues to add significant successes to the community. In his office at the Langley Events Centre, Rich Coleman, MLA Fort Langley – Aldergrove talks about the things he loves about Langley and how proud he is to have served his community for more than 20 years. He has an excellent record of listening to constituent needs and guiding government to take action – most recently in the area of education. “We continue to stay focused on what needs to be done,” Rich says. “LSS stays. I’m pretty proud of the work that got done there.” LSS, of course, is Langley Secondary School which was slated for closure. Following extensive public consultation, $20 million was requested by School District 35 and approved by the Province for seismic upgrades to the school.

Adding new schools is a big accomplishment, but it might be the less public achievements that Rich takes the most pride in. “Probably the most rewarding is when I’ve been able to help an individual on a personal level,” he says.

Innovative housing solutions have seen individuals thank Rich for what he’s been able to do as the Minister responsible for Housing. Anyone familiar with rising housing costs is also aware of rising rents and how hard it can be to make ends meet. With Provincial assistance tenants are able to live in units that aren’t “marked” as subsidized, which creates a higher amount of pride in the individual.

Between 2012 and 2014, one middle and two elementary schools have opened with 1,650 student seats, in the growing areas of the community. Lynn Fripps Elementary opened in 2012, Richard Bulpitt Elementary in 2013 and Yorkson Creek Middle in 2014. The need for a new secondary school Probably the most also took the forefront in 2014 which has recently seen the Provincial rewarding is when Government commit $55.2 million to I’ve been able to help get Willoughby Secondary School’s an individual on a additional 1,500 seats underway.

personal level.” – Rich Coleman

“Because of the growth in the community, Mary [Polak, MLA Langley] and I stay pretty focused on meeting with the school board regularly,” notes Rich. “David Green was a constant at the school board and really helped pull things together.”

Rich as proudly served Langley for more than 20 years and loves that he and his family call Langley home

“One single mom told me the subsidy was life-changing for her and her son,” says Rich. “She said to get that help improved the family’s nutrition and their life on so many levels.” Since 2001, the B.C. government has invested $4.4 billion to provide affordable housing for low income individuals, seniors and families.

Since 2001, the Province has added more than 24,750 new units of affordable housing. “We have to stay focused on the needs of people,” he says. “It’s not about buildings, it’s about keeping people integrated. Langley will see some announcements coming soon.” Additionally, there will be some changes to Highway #1 from 202 Ave. east to improve the flow of people and goods through Langley and into the Fraser Valley. Rich feels Langley has been a wonderful place to represent for more than two decades. He got into politics because he was concerned his kids would look outside of B.C. for their careers and lives and now, it’s about his grandkids’ having a future and opportunities here. He’s helping other families feel just as optimistic as his family is.

More than 102,500 B.C. households benefit from a diverse range of provincial housing programs and services.

RICH COLEMAN, M.L.A. Fort Langley - Aldergrove

BUDGET 2016: Four in a row! In February 2016, Finance Minister Michael DeJong tabled the 4th consecutive balanced budget in British Columbia. British Columbia is not in this position by accident. We have the opportunity to eliminate the operating debt in just 4 years, paving the path towards a debt free B.C. - for the first time since 1975!

In addition to more investment,

BALANCED BUDGET 2016 MEANS: • $3.2 billion more in Health Care Services over the next 3 years (compared to 2015/16) • Changes to MSP premiums; 335,000 people will have their MSP premiums reduced, 45,000 people will no longer pay MSP and children become exempt • Savings up to $13,000 in Property Transfer Tax on new homes valued up to $750,000 • The single largest investment in affordable housing in BC history; $355M over 5 years to support the construction of more than 2,000 affordable housing units in communities across B.C. • Lowest provincial personal income taxes (including consumption tax, health care premiums and payroll tax) for individuals earning up to $122,000 (2016)

Whether you are a two-income family of four, a single individual earning $80,000 or a senior couple, British Columbians have one of the lowest overall tax burdens in Canada… B.C.’s low taxes, stable and well-regulated financial system and fiscally responsible government are helping drive Canada’s overall economy.” ~ The Honorable Richard Neufeld, Senate of Canada (February 2016)

Coming in 2017…

As of May 28, 2016, I will have served as MLA in Fort Langley/Aldergrove for 20 years! I continue to be very proud of the vibrant community I represent, characterized most by uniquely supportive individuals and hard working families. I’m blessed to have the opportunity to provide assistance and support to such a great group of British Columbians!”

Constituency staff are available to assist throughout the community by appointment. Should you require assistance with any Provincial service or agency, it is always our pleasure to help!

The Commission has proposed to move the western boundary from 232 Street to 216 Street to accommodate Langley’s growing population. In addition, the new proposed “Langley East” electoral district would contain the rest of the Township of Langley, west of 248 Street south of Highway 1, and west of 264 Street north of Highway 1. The Commission’s report can be viewed here, reports/BC-EBC_Final_Report-Sept_24,_2015.pdf. A commercialdedicated team While B&W insurance has a number of locations, there’s one specific location for the expertise needed by commercial clients. Commercial insurance is completely different from personal insurance. It requires specialization in various industries and a focus on details to ensure the right coverage. Purchasing commercial insurance from those who aren’t experts in the field is a bit like asking a dentist to fix a broken leg. Jan Stamnes, Managing Partner of B&W Insurance had all the commercial expertise in his team, but those specialists were spread among a number of his traditional insurance offices. He saw an opportunity to do something different and unique for the industry – something to better serve the needs of commercial clients. “We went from a commercial person or two in each office to an office dedicated to serving our commercial clients,” Jan says. “No other brokerage had an office like that. We looked at the future of the industry and could see this was a need.”

The team at B&W also knows that commercial policies should never be just a reprint and renewal. Businesses change constantly and that means coverage may need to change as well.

The team at B&W Insurance’s commercial office has hundreds of years of experience taking care of commercial client needs

“It’s not just about looking at the policy and comparing,” Jan says. “It’s about making sure the coverage is right.” The proper coverage may cost a little more, but when the outcomes are considered, the price is more than worth it.

“We’ve had customers who, before working with us, had inadequate coverage,” Jan explains. “We’ve gone in and helped to correct that. In one case, when disaster hit, having the right coverage ensured that business survived instead of folding. Not having the right coverage is like Not having the right gambling and it’s really not worth the coverage is like risk.”

The benefits to commercial clients of a dedicated office are numerous. Not only are there hundreds of years of combined experience in one office, but that experience also ensures customers get the best price, best company and best gambling and it’s Another benefit of bringing all the coverage for their unique business really not worth commercial specialists together is needs. “Cyber-coverage is a new thing,” says Jan. “It’s to protect a business in case they get hacked. That can apply to many industries, so our entire team is up-tospeed on how that works.” He adds that the brokers regularly have education sessions where someone will come into the office and teach everyone about new coverages, programs or details. B&W team members can discuss insurance on-site at a client’s location or invite them into the office, conveniently located in the centre of Langley. With the expertise of the brokers and their support group, getting the right policy in place is a relatively quick process. Perhaps the most important benefit B&W Insurance provides (after the right coverage is in place) is the in-house claims department. Anyone who has gone through an insurance claim knows how difficult and exhausting it can be. With B&W’s help, you’ll have an advocate with you every step of the way. Classic butcher with great taste

A true family tradition, Bonetti Meats has the old-world meat cuts and prepared products you’ve been looking for. When was the last time you cooked bacon and didn’t have to drain a ridiculous amount of fat from the pan? Never? An Endless Love of Nature

Langley artist Barbara Boldt continues to bring art to others by portraying nature and realistically applying it to the canvas. Looking out her window, artist Barbara Boldt watches the birds springing around the feeders she’s placed on the railings for them. She gets up, grabs a cup of seed and sprinkles it along the empty wooden rail, then returns to watch the chickadees dine on their expected meal. “They are like my children,” she says of the birds. “I call to them and they come.” Her home is surrounded by natural beauty and it’s no coincidence that she’s chosen to live here. The 86-year-young painter has been in love with nature her whole life, but only began portraying nature realistically for others onto canvas when she was in her 40s. She’d been in front of an outdoor art show and saw the small sign advertising art lessons. She went forward with skill and determination and since 1980 has been making her living creating oneof-a-kind, original art. “I’m fortunate that I can support myself doing what I love,” she says. “I have never reproduced an image, I’ve never done prints.”

“I am working on oil painting number 910, I’ve done 500 plus soft pastels and more than 300 watercolours using my own photographs or sketches,” notes Barbara. “I have stacks of drawings, I don’t even count those. People come and look and I enjoy having them. I don’t expect them to buy something every time they come.”

Barbara has kept albums of her shows and paintings to retain a timeline of her work since the 1970s

Despite not having picked up a brush until she was in her 40s, Barbara’s talents run through the family. She’s traced it back to 1591 – a male relative on her father’s side was a painter. Her grandmother painted teacups and china. Her mother could draw.

In addition to creating original art, Barbara taught classes at the Centennial Museum for 18 years, from 1992 to 2010. When she established one of her galleries There is no – Barbara Boldt Original Art – that competition in art. was a prime criteria when she selected the location. It’s always been about nature for Barbara. While she has done a few portraits, nature is the key. She says it’s because there is never a lack of things for her to paint. She creates her pieces from both photos and what she sees outside. “I see something totally different when I look out the window in May than when I look out the window in June,” she says. She’s done a number of series depicting different angles and points of view of the nature found at places she’s been. One series was of the sandstone formations on Galiano Island. She went there in 1988 and the trip inspired her special Earth Patterns series. The biggest compliment Barbara receives is when someone looks at a piece of art and says, “Oh that looks like a Barbara Boldt.” If people have seen her art and remember it, she takes a great amount of pleasure in that. For truly original art, contact Barbara Boldt to explore her interpretation of nature on canvas.

A Helping Hand During

Challenging Times Providing 30+ years of compassionate support, the Langley Hospice Society has helped countless individuals and their families by providing palliative and bereavement care and support. Saying goodbye to a loved one, is not an easy task. The end of life journey is an incredibly personal one, but that doesn’t mean it must be done alone. The Langley Hospice Society is a community-based charitable organization that is committed to providing support to those living with a terminal illness, their family and friends throughout the last stage of illness, at the time of death and during bereavement. “The Langley Hospice Society offers a wide range of programs and services free of charge to the community we serve,” according to Communications and Funds Development Manager, Shannon Todd Booth. “In addition to palliative care and support, we provide individual and group grief support programs, summer and day camps for grieving children and teens, outreach and volunteer training programs, and a resource library,” Shannon said. While some people are familiar with work done through the hospice residence, they are often surprised to learn the extent of the other programs offered.

“Our volunteers logged more than 38,000 hours last year,” Shannon added. “Volunteers touch everything we do.”

With a recent offer of Fraser Health land to build a new, 15-bed, free-standing hospice, the Langley Hospice Society is excited to be working in partnership with Fraser Health’s Palliative Care Team, to make the new hospice residence a reality. This project would see Langley increase its much needed bed count to 15 private rooms – an increase of 5 from the 10 semi-private rooms currently available in the interim residence located in the old Maple Hill Residential Care Complex. Architectural planning is well underway, and the Society’s hope is to secure full funding and break ground in 2017, which could see the new residence accepting patients in the winter of 2018.

“Hospice is more than just a building or residence,” Shannon noted. “It’s a philosophy of care.”

As a non-profit charitable organization, the Langley Hospice Society has diverse but limited funding sources, and they fundraise annually to be able to continue to offer quality palliative and bereavement programming, and to ensure that these offerings remain free of charge for those who need them.
