Red Deer Public and Catholic school jurisdictions say pronouns like he or she are not banned at their schools as part of efforts to provide inclusive environments when it comes sexual orientation and gender identity. Some parents made the claim and spoke out against it at a meeting led by Education Minister David Eggen at Father Henri Voisin School on Tuesday night, a meeting meant to gather input on curriculum redesign.

EDMONTON — Premier Rachel Notley says Alberta will roll out specifics this fall of its plan to phase out coal-fired electricity and promote renewable energy. Notley, in a state-of-the-province speech Wednesday, said the plan will include financial help to coal emitters closing their plants and transitioning to cleaner forms of power. There will also be details on how proponents will be able to bid to replace coal generation in the Alberta market. “And we will set out more detail on how we will promote the construction of clean, renewable energy — wind, solar, thermal and hydropower — efficiently, economically and without undue subsidy,” Notley said. Notley’s government has promised to end coal-fired electricity generation by 2030.

A jury has convicted a Pine Lake man of attempted murder. Cory Lavallee was convicted of shooting and wounding Donald Bernie Brown, then 31, at a rural residence in the Pine Lake area on June 2, 2014. Brown was hit in the face by a round from a .22-calibre rifle that dropped him to the ground. Lavallee shot him again in the face as he lay on the ground. Despite his wounds, Brown fled to a neighbouring residence for help. Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Terrance Clackson will sentence Lavallee on Jan. 30. The maximum sentence for attempted murder is life in prison. The four-woman, eight-man jury deliberated for about four hours before reaching a verdict on Wednesday.
