GSW Project under budget Upper level paving almost complete C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Paving is taking place on the upper part of Gerry Sorensen Way as the $4.5 million rebuilding project nears completion. In fact, the bottom portion of the road opened this week. Mayor Don McCormick says the second layer of pavement on the upper stretch of the road was being completed this week, then it’s just the gutters to finish. “The weather is causing a little grief, he said. “But the plan is to be done by the end of the month. At City Hall this week, Council was pleased to learn that so far, numbers indicate that the project will come in under budget. “It’s awesome to be
under budget for a project this size, McCormick said. McCormick also said it was encouraging to hear that the Kimberley Underground Mining Railway finished their season in the black despite the problems Gerry Sorensen construction created with access to the downtown station. “We also want to thank Norton Avenue residents for their incredible patience with the extreme traffic volume this summer. The City received a $4.5 million grant — or 100 per cent of costs, whichever is lesser — for the Gerry Sorensen Way Reconstruction project under the Gas Tax Strategic Priorities Fund. There will be no cost to the taxpayers of Kimberley unless the budget does exceed $4.5 million, which looks unlikely at this time.

Nordic Club, Soccer Ass’n seek City support C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
Kimberley Council heard from two different Kimberley sports groups at their regular meeting
Tuesday night this week; the Kimberley Soccer Association and the Kimberley Nordic Club. Both were looking for Council support for club projects.
The Kimberley Nordic Club, whose racers have been seeing some great success in recent years, is looking to bring international races to Kimberley.
The club believes Kimberley is ideally situated to host larger events such as the Western Canadian Championships and the NorAm races that also attract athletes
from the USA. These events could bring between 400 to 700 athletes and support people to Kimberley for 3-5 days, which would have a significant beneficial
economic impact. In order to bring the Nordic Trails up to FIS standards for races, a process called homologation takes place. This involves visits from CCC
