The numbers are City, Steelworkers talks reach standstill in; and they are big City’s infrastructure deficit sits at $73 million C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
The City of Kimberley has recently undergone an Asset Management Assessment from Urban Systems. The Assessment looked at all city assets, water systems, road networks, build-
ings and equipment, parks and recreation facilities and more. It gave each asset a replacement value, years of remaining life before replacement, infrastructure deficit (how much is operating beyond its service life), the total amount needed to pay for replacement over the next 20 years, and how much the City should be contributing each year to keep that piece of infrastructure sustainable. City asks for mediator; Steelworkers to seek strike vote from City of Kimberley union employees C AROLYN GR ANT Bulletin Editor
The City of Kimberley put out a brief press release Wednesday afternoon stating that they and
the United Steelworkers Local I-405 have now completed 10 days of bargaining and have reached a standstill in the negotiation process. The City has applied to the Labour Relations Board for the assistance of a Board appointed Mediator and are hopeful of reaching a settlement that supports the City of Kimberley’s sustainability goals, the release says. Jeff Bromley, lead negotiator for the United Steelworkers, says this leaves the USW Bargaining
Committee with no choice but to seek a mandate in the form of a Strike Vote from the unionized workforce. “We will be beginning that process over the next week,” Bromley said. Bromley says that bargaining broke off due to the employer’s insistence that the unionized workforce accept concessions as part of any negotiated settlement. See TALKS, page 3
