Selkirk grads Devin Fikis and Erin McCullough would like you to save your recycling for the Grad Bottle Drive on Sunday, May 29. Grads will be all over town from 10:30 to 5 p.m. raising funds for Dry Grad activities. If they don’t hit your house, you can drop your bottles at the Civic Centre that day or to the bottle depot in Lower Blarchmont, where they will accept grad donations all spring.
Unlicensed and prohibited drivers
Check stop near Forest Crowne scoops up unlicensed, prohibited and impaired drivers BULLE TIN STAFF
A police officer never knows
what might turn up at a roadside checkstop. Kimberley RCMP Cpl. Chris Newel reports that on the evening of May 18, Kimberley RCMP dealt with a number of drivers who either did not possess a valid driver’s license, were prohibited from driving or were served a driving prohibition as a result of alcohol.

Last fall, when the Cranbrook Kimberley Development Initiative was just in its infancy, Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick stated that the goal was to get 50 businesses on board, each contributing $5,000. That would create a bank account of $250,000, with the hope that matching funds could be leveraged through the Columbia Basin Trust. The funds will be used for targeted sales and marketing activities that promote the advantages of doing business in the Cranbrook Kimberley area. That goal has almost been reached, with 47 Cranbrook Kimberley area businesses having committed $5,000. McCormick is confident that the last three businesses will be found. “We had a meeting of all the stake holders last week,” McCormick said. “Everyone got an update of where we’re at and a board of directors was

elected.” The board of eight, has two Kimberley members, Joanne Kitt of Caldwell Agencies and Ted Funston from the Kimberley Alpine Resort. There are six Cranbrook members, Hans Mehrle - Selkirk Signs; Bill Sanderman - Applied Compression Systems; Rick Jensen - New Dawn Developments; Marko Maryniak Rockies Law; Jody Burke - East Kootenay Credit Union; Ken Bridge Bridge Interiors. Now that everything is in place, it’s time to get to work, McCormick says. “We’ve already had a half dozen leads between Kimberley and Cranbrook and we are about to invest in a marketing campaign in the Lower Mainland,” McCormick said. “We’re pretty excited about it.” One of the advantages that CKDI stresses is the combination of the lower cost of doing business and the great lifestyle the area has to offer.
