Feeling like 3.5 million bucks

Search continues

By Kathy O’Reilly-Taylor Editor Retirement just got a whole lot more golden for Alert Bay’s George Speck. Speck, 64, is the winner of a $3.5-million prize from the March 19 Lotto 6/49 draw. Speck travelled to the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) office in Vancouver last Tuesday to claim his prize. In an interview via telephone from Vancouver, Speck said he bought the winning ticket from the Alert Bay Drug Store “on a whim”. He explained he is not a regular ticket buyer, nor does he have sets of numbers he plays. “I just play quick pick, and I’m notorious for having these things sit in my wallet,” he said. “I didn’t even check my tickets until the following Wednesday,” he said. Speck was in bed, on Facebook “to see what my friends are up to” and an old friend was asking her brother if he had checked his ticket, because someone in Alert Bay had won the lottery.”

By Kathy O’ReillyTaylor Editor RCMP continue to search the remote wilderness area near O’Connell Lake near Port Alice for 62-year-old Marc Regimbal, who was reported missing at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. Neucel to remain closed for 2016 By Tyson Whitney Reporter Neucel Specialty Cellulose’s Chief Executive Officer Wanli Zhao sent out an update on March 29 regarding the pulp mill’s current state of curtailment, and it wasn’t good news. Zhao wrote that Neucel “has been in a marketdriven production curtailment since the beginning of 2015. The forecast at that time was that conditions would improve to the point where we would be able to resume operations in 2016. Regrettably,

this is not the case.” Zhao cites the global dissolving pulp market and other economic factors as the reason for not resuming operations at this time. However, Zhao said the shareholders “remain committed to the mill in Port Alice and will work towards the operational reliability of the mill with the intention to restart production when the market improves and other conditions are suitable. This is a difficult time for all stakeholders and we continue to ask for your patience and support.” Port Alice Mayor Jan Allen said the news

wasn’t surprising. “The market remains weak, and when the market is weak, they can’t start the mill up,” Allen said, adding that while Neucel may still be in curtailment, it hasn’t stopped the Port Alice community from continuing on. “The houses and stratas (in Port Alice) have been selling, it’s really incredible,” said Allen. “The Village of Port Alice is moving forward with or without the mill. The best kept secret is out, Port Alice is the most incredible municipality to live in or visit.”
