Boaters had difficulty launching their boats at Big Rock Boat Launch during last Fridayâs low tide. Here a boat is marooned inside the breakwater because the outlet channel is too shallow. Meanwhile, boats can be seen in Discovery Passage waiting for the rising tide.
Boat launch improvements canât come soon enough for some MIKE DAVIES CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The low tides last weekend made getting boats in and out of Discovery Passage even more difficult than usual for boaters trying to enjoy one of the first nice weekends of spring. This prompted yet another call from boaters for the state of the boat launches â specifically Big
Rock Boat Launch â to be addressed sooner rather than later. Allison Galloway and her husband David say they launched from the Big Rock ramp about 9:30 a.m. last Friday morning (April 8) to go prawning, and were coming back a few hours later in an attempt to beat low tide â which was expected about 12:30 p.m. Unfortunately for the Galloways, the tide was already

After high levels of lead were found in the drinking water of 48 per cent of locations in the Prince Rupert School District this past February, school districts around the province have been testing their own drinking water for contaminants to find out if they, too, needed to take steps to mitigate this possible health issue. Deputy Minister of Education Dave Byng sent a letter to all school districts in the province after the Prince Rupert situation came to light in the media, saying, âAt the request of the Provincial Health Officer, I am writing to remind all school districts of the importance of ensuring water quality within all schools complies with Water Management Best Practices and the Drinking Water Protection Act.â Secretary-Treasurer of the Campbell River School District (SD72) Kevin Patrick revealed to the board of education at this weekâs public meeting that testing has been completed across our district and all but two locations came back, âwell within compliance and safety levels.â
